he was a good prof, kinda monotone but he knows what he's talking about
Top prof. REALLY Good temper.Discuss assignment on moodle and often make jokes with student.Reply EVERY e-mail. Got beautiful eyes^.^..Talk fast and have a quick mind, better read prior to class. Easy assignment, average test, know your stuff and you'll be fine. Just go and enjoy. p.s.*We Love Weather* ^.^
AWESOME teacher really really helpful and will go out of his way to help you. You would be lucky to have him as a teacher!
I love this teacher he's probably one of the nicest teachers you can ever meet. He's really helpful and goes out of his way to help you. He responds to every single e-mail right away and gives you an outline of what to expect on exams (no surprises). As long as you study you should get a high mark.
Very good prof, he is a very nice, humble, dedicated person. Good course as it is pretty interesting.
Best prof ever!!!! Keep up the good work!!
Ian was a great professor, and extremely helpful. His lectures (and notes) were posted online and very clear, concise and interesting. He also made it very easy to get in touch with anyone and everyone in the course including himself. Thanks Ian.
NATS 1780 (online section) is THE most disorganized class i have ever been enrolled in. There are way too many files/powerpoints etc uploaded on moodle and it is nearly impossible to find what you're looking for. A clear schedule of due dates and test dates is not provided. Also virtually no help is had for any of the math required to do this course
Good prof you can defiantly he loves helping his students, and really easy
His weather class is really easy. All previous quiz, assignments, and exams he will post through moodle which helps a lot! I honestly skipped all lectures and I got an A in that class. Highly recommended prof.
Do not take Nats 1780 'Weather and Climate' with this proff! The professor is disorganized, he puts up lectures on moodle but uploads way to many files. The TA's take forever to mark assignments, I didn't know my mark going into the final exam because papers had not been graded. Terrible, Terrible class! you have been warned.
he's truly passionate about what he teaches , you will never look at clouds the same ! Exams were very fair , but his slides are very unorganised and hard to understand . I highly recommend him !
A truly, amazing professor. The amount of time he pours into the course, and the effort he takes to answer students' questions makes up for his mediocre presentation skills. Course requires a mix of reading and PowerPoint, but his PowerPoints were so compact that it was all you needed for exams.
He is not helpful at all and very very dis organized person. His class always has a really high drop-off rate as he is not a great person to teach
i really love this proffessor and i never missed class. he is helpfully and very nice person and answear your quasion as much as he can. i dont know why there are many people think his ppt is bad organized casuse i believe if you listen to the class carfully, you definitely know the logic in ppt.make me realy know the diffirent cloud. good class!

Easy class, just EXTREMELY boring. Terrible timing, a 3 hour lecture on a Monday morning made worse by uncomfortable seats and a terribly boring professor dont add up very well. Very monotone. Tries very hard, very nice and approachable guy. Tries to make it as interesting and relatable as possible, its just the content thats unbelievable boring.
Generally a nice guy with a passion for the subject. Wish he had the same passion for teaching cuz he is EXTREMELY unorganized &lazy. No timely feedback, slides are ALL over the place. The content is mostly straightforward but marks are not easy due to vaguely worded questions & tedious assignments. He explains concepts well, overall he's alright.
Tries very hard to make the course interseting, very nice and approachable professor. exam is very easy but the online quizz is a little hard. assingment is hard but help you to understand the real world of weather. I learn a lot fome this course and really recommend you to take this course. sometimes a little boring, but really helpfull.
Great professor! All material he covers is included in the power point on moodle. Quizzes and Assignments are fair! Exams are very similar to the past ones that he also provides on moodle. He is very interested in helping students and answers all the questions. Tutorials are easy and TAs are very nice! All in all, Ian Lumb is an amazing professor!
People giving this guy a good review are crazy. Extremely disorganized, monotone voice, ridiculously difficult assignments/tests, all around horrible. Avoid this class if you want to spare your GPA and your sanity.
Workload was insane for the first 2 months, you have labs & journals due every week, quizzes every other week and Assignment every month. Tones of work & each worth so little. (eg. 5%/assignment, 5%/quiz, 1%/lab) He's willing to postpone deadlines and give out tips on labs & assignment via moodle discussion. u can't screw it up if u do the work.
Pretty easy course overall. He was really helpful and the exam was very fair. Just study off his slides and previous exams, easy A.
After taking this course, Hell doesn't seem like that bad of a place. This guy is out of his mind, and the course is the most painful thing I've ever experienced. Weekly readings are over 100 pages, quizzes have 9 options, labs include having to ride a roller coaster at Wonderland. If you're a fan of masochism, this course is for you! Worst prof!!!
This class is horrible especially online, disorganized, boring lectures, answers on quiz are so specific, do not take
extreme boring lecture and tough tests, if you can not fall asleep, I recommend you go to his lecture.
This is a tough course. However, you can learn a lot and Professor Lumb is a good teacher. He is very understanding and helpful when need be.
VERY HARD EXAMS LECTURES ARE LONG AND BORING
Ian Lumb is always nice to students and helpful
he is nice and anwer all the question
He is so nice. Easy 4.0
EASY assignments
The best teacher I've ever had
This is an easy class for students. Exams are easy, assignments are easy. Definitely choose this class and this professor!
Ian Lumb is nice and patient to all the students especially international student. However this class is not easy you need to see lecture record and do all the assignments to pass the course. His lecture is interesting as well.
Assignments and quiz got half of total gradethis course is not hardu even can pass without buying a textbook. Teacher is good and always answer students question within one day through email.
best class I ever had
Nats1780 was the worst class I have EVER taken. If you are not strong in the math or science aspect then do not take this class!! So much to memorize, like SO MUCH. All the answers on quizzes are VERY specific, plus assignments are worth like 2% so dumb. Lecture is long and boring. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS PLEASE ITS CAUSED ME SO MUCH ANXIETY!
He's so boring. Took a class with him and end up regretting it. Exams are so tough. Assignments are not worth it!
Prof Lumb is a great prof and trys to make lectures interesting despite the heavy course content. He is even nice enough to tell you what areas to focus on for the exam AND essay topics. He also has a good sense of humour. However, course content can be quite challenging. Textbook is a must as well as attending class, if you want to do well.
Prof Ian Lumb is an amazing prof. His lecture are well put together. Theres a lot of assignments in this course but be is willing to help or answer any questions students may have. I wish he was teaching more courses because I really enjoy his lectures.
lumb is a good prof. very friendly.
Ian Lumb's a phenomenal professor with extensive knowledge on the course subject. He's accessible, straight forward, and worth listening to. Very strict towards disruptive students, so if you are one, watch out! If there's one thing I feel he lacks however, it's his participation questions that weren't necessarily answered in previous slides.
He's a bully. I showed up to every class but 1, yet scored a 65% on participation. The majority of those questions weren't answered until later slides, yet he has the nerve to blame the students? Fall midterm was also out of the realm of what we studied; most questions were derived from previous midterms. Easy A, but unbearable professor.
Ian is accessible outside of class so if you have questions he will definitely reply. The quizzes were easy if you studied the lecture notes well and understand the concepts. The labs and assignments were easy because he posts tutorials online. I only disliked the take home midterm and final exams because he didnt give enough time to finish it.
Ian Lumb is by far the best prof I've had in University. He is engaging, cracks jokes, and explains concepts in a way that anyone can understand. He is always available for extra help. It is seen that he truly cares about his profession and even more so his students. Overall, he has made my experience in university better. 10/10 would recommend.
Lumb is a good professor, his assignments are extremely tough and take FOREVERRR to complete, BUT he is very accommodating in regards to extensions etc. if you express a concern, he does everything he can to help. he cares about the material, he's very engaging. Although he has VERY long lectures
he is an okay professor does his job. he is at times rude and straight with you - if you can handle that then go for his class. assignments and exams are solely based on lecture items and sometimes random things he adds. personally did better in fall term than winter term as his material was just previous years material - not worth my money
Overall, he's a great prof but the course load was heavy imo. Quizzes after every chapter, labs, assignments, midterms and exams. Its difficult to balance if you're a ft student. If you're up for a challenge then this is the course, otherwise, I would just probably find a different NATS course
worst case I have ever taken did not receive any grades for the first 4 months in the class. be prepared to do 5 pager assignments for only 5%. None of the lecture were current the ranged from 2018-2020 with the oldest lecture being from 2016. the whole class felt like a waste of money has none of the lectures where current -200/10 teach is so bad
He's quite enthusiastic to teach the material and is quite familiar with the material. Great lecturer and his assignments, quizzes, and exams are not very hard.
always answering questions on eclass great reminders and keeping up to date really flexible and understanding puts in a lot of effort to make course material understandable for all learning types
Cares about the course a lot, almost too much. It was a challenging course and made you work for the marks, but it was enjoyable and interesting. He is kind of slow at replying to emails and questions.
If you take his courses, expect him to never respond to your emails and be very inaccessible. Also look forward to having beyond excessive amounts of lectures being posted on a weekly basis. His average was 5-6 hours of lecture content weekly. One week he posted just under EIGHT HOURS of lecture content to study! (NATS 1750) Avoid his courses!
For the lab, he should understand that students are all over the world not all of them have access to google docs and certain apps. you have to be highly inclined Computer wise to even indulge. most students are non science majors so he should consider. He's flying through the class like everyone is a native speaker or has background in science
If you think this class will be easy to understand you are mistaken. the instructor is not good at making things clear at all. he isn't accommodating and fails to understand that not everybody has a science background. he teaches like you're supposed to automatically know what he's talking about. the class is just horrible and very frustrating.
Horrible teacher. Very Very Very horrible
I am so glad I never have to be in this man's class in my life again
This class is a lot of work but it is interesting and prof is reasonable, allows extensions when needed. He cares a lot about the subject and is very knowledgeable and respectful. If this is not your area of interested be prepared to adapt.
Ian lumb made this class fun and engaging and was overall such a nice guy. He was always welcoming to give extra time for assignments with no problems unlike other profs. I did not understand the course content fully but Ian lumb made it engaging to learn and helped me along the way. Would take a class of his again.
Ian is a nice instructor, however his lectures felt random with no flow between topics. It was hard to understand because of how sporadic his teaching was. Not a great teacher but never knowledge person. I wouldn't recommend the course unless you are very passionate about the course topic, otherwise you will be lost on the first day.
He was super nice + accommodating. Open to giving extensions for assignments and reexplaining topics. But, he wasn't good at giving lectures. Often jumped from one topic to another and sounded like he wasn't familiar with what he was teaching. He was a substitute for our original prof, so that could explain it, but he made simple concepts unclear.
He took over for Dr. Domenikos when she left for maternity leave. I ended up being 15 minutes late for the midterm because of traffic, and he was very accommodating and even offered me to stay 15 minutes later if I needed to. In general, very nice and understanding. Not as strict with late assignments as Dr. Domenikos was.
Nice guy, not a very good teacher. Most of his slides are stream of consciousness, very ill organized in both lecture and assignment instructions. its almost impossible to get any clear information on assignment criteria or upcoming deadlines. Also an incredibly slow grader and doesn't answer emails. Be prepared to teach yourself.
Cons: -Talks in slow motion, very boring -Material irrelevance and inconsistency -Unclear instructions -Many mistakes in quizzes, lectures, exams, instructions, etc... -Messy structure to lectures and course in general -Imbalanced workload -Instructed to buy online textbook that we did not need. Pros: -Very nice and easy grader (in general).
NATS 1516! Attendance is not mandatory but you have to attend and answer the iClicker questions. Lectures are interesting. If you can, take 1516 with Prof. Lumb!
Prof Ian is easily one of the best profs here at York. This class turned out to be something different than what I anticipated, in a good way. He was accommodating and resourceful during the course and considered the student's opinions almost always. His lectures were always insightful. He grades pretty well, given that you put in your effort!
This professor was awful. Talks in slow motion and manages to make 3 hour lectures seem like 8 hours. He is very unprofessional when it comes to answering emails, very vague and passive aggressive. Would definitely not take this professor again since I didn't even receive a mark after 3 months into the course and I barely knew my grade.
his tests are ridiculous and made them even harder for my semester than for the previous term's students. Took 1516 course with Dr. domenikos (original prof, lumb is filling in for her) and she never made tests so difficult and complicated. if you're not good with chemistry then don't bother, also lectures are very slow. but accomodating w/ assignm
took this as someone who's more interested in biology type of NATS.. if you don't like chemistry then don't take this. lectures are very boring, if he didn't finish the lecture in class he'll post a recording to follow up. but very accommodating with test and assignment deadlines which is nice. returns marks pretty slow. passive aggressive tho..
This was one of the most difficult courses I've taken. The 3-hour lectures were heavy and hard to follow, making it nearly impossible to understand the material. The midterms felt disconnected from the lectures, leaving me feeling unprepared despite attending. I regret not dropping this course earlier and would not recommend it to others.
Everything about this class is easy except the midterms worth 20 percent each. For the first midterm I created 6 pages of study sheets based on the lecture notes to bring as it was open book but when I wrote the test it felt like I was in the wrong class. 2nd one was confusing too. I also haven't gotten homework back I submitted over 2 months ago.
He just makes the course way more difficult than it should be. 2 midterms worth 20% each, but then they get split into parts A/B, 1 online, 1 in person, both which ask different kinds of questions and different types of testing? 5 total case studies, 3 assignments...and only 1 each back and the course is already done. Incredibly passive agressive!
Still taking the course, but Ian is genuinely passionate about what he does and you can tell through the way he teaches. Good humor, but he can be passive-aggressive. Lectures are long and can be difficult to sit through, but you have access to them after. Definitely not a bird course either, but he marks relatively fairly imo to make up for that.
Ian is a pretty good professor. He gives constant extensions, he's nice, gives open book tests / exams. and very accommodating. My issue is not with Ian specifically, but the course itself. The class felt all over the place to me and I really did not feel like I was learning too much about artificial intelligence. I have taken 3 courses with Ian!
Lectures hard to follow. Course structure is very disorganized.
The course is all over the place and the amount of content we are being taught for a first year course is crazy! The exam is open book but I doubt that will even help. Not to sure what to expect on the final and definitely scared and too late to drop the course as well :(
Ian's lectures were quite monotone and boring, and they were quite hard to follow. But he did use iClicker for participation during the lecture, so there was some engagement at least. He's very kind and understanding in terms of accommodations and deadlines, and he let us use Zoom to attend the 8:30am class, so we didn't have to attend in person.
He's fine. But tends to be very hot and cold with students (Has been passive aggressive pretty regularly over minor inconveniences) Lenient with deadlines and extensions. Lots of labs and assignments none of which are particularly difficult but rather tedious. Mandatory AI usage for some assignments if that matters to you. Tests are confusing.
Honestly sooo much work for a 3 credit course, felt like a 9 credit score. Also very difficult for a first year course I was so suprised. The exam is open book but it makes sense because otherwise we all would be miserably failing as the content is way to advance and doesn't match the course title
Extremely unprofessional. While the coursework was not particularly heavy - aside from ridiculously tedious and poorly worded Labs/Assignments that you aren't guarantee to get back on time, or feedback from. Ian? Incredibly unprofessional and hard too take seriously. Had petty outbursts that disrupted class time and overall experience.
At first, I liked him; he was really nice, but his mood changed, and he started targeting specific classmates. He was extremely disruptive towards our final and was on the phone and loudly speaking with the TAs. He would threaten to report/ kick students out of school for minor issues. He took over 3 months to grade our assignments.
I thought he was a really good professor at first. He's actually a disrespectful and selfish person. Our classes were 3 hours long each week and out of the countless hours we were in that class 45 minutes of it was spent being interrupted by some people. Instead of talking directly to those students he decided to punish a class of nearly 200 people
Ian Lumb was a great prof for Weather and Climate. It was extremely disapointing the amount of disruptions which plagued the class both online and in-person. This changed how he delivered content due to the unseriousness. The course its self is a lot of content however as long as you understand the assignments and pay attention you will be fine.
Incredibly difficult professor to follow within lectures - content is typically not applicable to the course or is misleading from what was originally projected. A lot of filler content. Course work is heavy for the course that it is, expect multiple assignments and the use of Kritik to mark other students assignments.
Great professor who truly cares about his students' success. He's very amicable and approachable. If you get to know him, and participate, you will have an amazing time in class and in office hours. He is quite accessible and will make adjustments in grading when necessary. You're graded by many things, so there are a lot of low-stakes assessments.
This NATS class is not beginner friendly! Lots of complex lecture and terms that are difficult to understand as a beginner. Taking his class online is a pain, he uses too much different websites for assignments which gets confusing (Kritik, IClicker, Notebook LM). This class is way too complicated. Professor seems nice, but the class is difficult.
NATS1780 online is the hardest class I have ever taken!! Beware, not an easy course. Its supposed to be for non major students and for beginners. As a beginner who knows nothing about science, this is not a beginner friendly course. SAVE YOURSELF NOW
Ian was a pretty chill guy in his (optional) lectures. 2 day GP for assignments was cool. Organization doesn't seem to be his forte, where the course project details were only released ~2 weeks to the end. 3 part final. A is online AFTER IRL, no idea when thats happening. B&C happening irl. Final overview not done & 48 hrs til the in person exam.
The most unorganized professor and course that I have taken, his outline, grading components, and final project were all "work in progress" until the last week. Both the course and the exam are too long, not cohesive, and include too many random topics that he forces in. Why is the exam 4hrs and why did I have to learn more about tornadoes than AI?
He's a caring dude, but damn the course super disorganized. Also the final exam was difficult for no reason.
Like other reviews have stated, Dr. Lumb is actually a pretty nice guy. He's firm, but understanding in how he directs the class. However, the complete lack of organization was brutal. The assignments were unnecessarily difficult with vague instructions and concepts not covered in-class, and completing them was a major headache.
He is extremely bad at responding to emails and does not give enough information for assignments and ESPECIALLY the exams. He doesn't allow unmuting, and doesn't read the chat and also rarely ever responds to emails. when he does, it's short and not helpful. There is practically no way to ask questions or get answers. he seems nice, organization bad
super disorganized and never checks email already hard course but he makes it even more harder
