He is cute and smart.
He decides on the 1st class if you are a B,C or A and gives you those grades
He's such a sweetie... hot...intelligent.... and kind. Best Teacher at York!
Just because they think he's hot, dosen't mean he's a good teacher, he's not!
If you are worth it in Ian's view, he will do his best for you; and if not....
he picks favourites. you can tell who are his favs from the comments
likes to joke around... makes lectures fun. but course is hard.
bright guy, tries hard, but needs to grow up
Excellent prof, keeps you laughing, and attentive in class
No one else thinks he's hot...? He provides interesting lectures, and tries hard to be entertaining, succeeding about half the time. He seems a little disorganized some days. Acts like an introvert-turned-extrovert, possessing qualities of each.
Definitely hot! Interesting stories which keeps you attentive in class. Work hard and you can do well.

His tests are difficult and a bit obscure in some cases, but he loves his course, and this field, and he does a good job presenting material.
Disorganized; doesn't explain material well (hello! powerpoint); He wastes time talking about himself and his neuroses, girlfriend, parents, friends, sister, etc., when the time could have been spent explaining the complicated studies he's testing us on.
hot guy, keeps his lectures interesting, funny and organized. everyone i know who has ever taken his class ABSOLUTELY LOVES him.
This is the class I look forward to the most every week! He's cute, funny, friendly, and always goes over everything until the whole class is clear. I like the fact that he incorporates his personal life into discussion, it's a good way to explain!
Terrific professor; warm, passionate, and tries hard (and succeeds) in making his lectures interesting.
tries to hard to be funny, and his exams were too damn hard (50 ques from 5 chapters). he is cocky and arrogant, thinks he is so good looking and funny that he is more worried about how he looks than how he teaches.
He is very creative, humoruous, and enthusiastic in his teaching, incorporates his own experiences into the lectures successfully. He is inspirational with his passion to the research. One of my most interesting and enjoyable courses at York. Good job!
funny and witty. Has conducted really interesting research
He teaches the subject in a very enthusiastic manner, like a stand up routine. He answers questions and tries hard to motivate interest in the subject. Very interesting class. He crams a lot of information into the tests. The hand-outs are helpful.
Puts a lot of effort into his lectures. lectures on relevent up-to-date studies. Does not focus on material already covered in the text making it worth while to attend classes.
Tries to make lectures different from the ho hum of standing and speaking for three hours. Uses different teaching techniques, and adds a personal element to the class by sharing some of himself. Tests are tough though.
Awesome prof. Up beat and energetic, passionate about what he lectures about, loves to help students, and is a very funny guy. Shame he isn't teaching other courses.
Great man. Loved taking his course..the most fascinating second year course. He puts a lot of heart into his lectures.
Very good prof!!! His lectures are interesting and informative. His tests are pretty easy too.
Great prof! Good sense of humour and didnt regurgitate textbook which made attending lectures worthwile. Also very very good looking!!
I am in my 3rd year and have taken MANY psych. courses, this is the best PSYCH PROF I have had. EXCELLENT lectures (fun, interesting, informative), incorporated w/ research studies, questionaires and fun activities, fair tests. He is very helpful.
amazing prof... reminds me of a younger Letterman (he looks like him and he's as funny as him) Do yourself a favour and take him
Do your eyes and mind a favour and take this course with McGregor.. his lectures are fascinating, and he himself is quite the treat to look at for three hours. Great textbook, too.
THUMBS UP!!!
Great professor. His lectures are entertaining, he's a funny guy! He explains the material with examples quite well. Tests are easy, just need to read the book, and focus on the parts of lecture where he talks about his own experiments and research.
all i have to say is that he doesn't live up to the hype.

i really loved this course! u really have to read the text tho...exams weren't hard altho u do have to study...i really liked this course (material) so maybe that influences my opinion about teh prof

great class. He's very funny which makes it a whole lot easier to sit for 3 hours. many personal antidotes that connect the material to real life. exams were easy because he made learing fun.

not my kind of course.
Great lecturer, engaging style. Never a bore or confusing. May like Frued a bit too much - but watching this cutie eat a banana while covering psychodynamic theory is very... tolerable.
uhhh...okay.
Wonderful! McGregor devoted his time to making the material come alive, using a great variety of teaching aides. He was the most passionate professor I've had, and this was one of the most interesting courses I've had. I strongly recommend this course.
i luved his class, hez funny n he knowz wat hez talking bout. material was great n so was he.
finally someone is speaking truthfully! honestly, like it's so obvious that the same person keeps posting high ratings in order to up his score!
stay away from this class...
If you know what's good for you, STAY AWAY. RUN FAR AND FAST IF YOU HAVE HIM DOWN AS A PROF! RUN LIKE YOU'VE NEVER RUN BEFORE! *he is kinda cute though* :D
the greatest psy teacher I have, and he makes the course very interesting.
A nice person overall but totally all over the place. Your notes will be a mess if you can take any!
need to go to every single class and write down everything he say in the class. Otherwise, even A is impossible.
forget what he looks like, which is pretty dorky, really. he is so unstructured, includes personal details about his life on exams, and confuses the heck out of his students. also, he is obsessed with rate my prof. he actually checks it often to see what people say. sorry, ian.
i'm really suprised by these ratings! i think he's an amazing professor--he made every lecture really interesting and fun, the text was an easy read and his exams were totally fair. in fact i'd rank him one of the best psych profs at york along with mongrain, rutherford & haltrecht!
I have to agree with the last rating (9/30/05). I think he's a really good prof. I totally enjoyed his class. And he is SO NOT dorky looking! You people are too cruel.
I like to spend my time in the BS Building and stare at the photo of him on the 2nd floor. So hot! Well... more so in real life at least! Replace that photo, sir, it's so bad! Having that said, he's a pretty good prof. Average.
the class is really boring, but he's really cute, so it's ok. :-D. exams are easy, material is dull but he tries to make it interesting, which makes it easier to remember
he does a great job keeping class interesting. If you like a prof who puts effort into his lectures then u will like him. Being a hottie also helps. Didnt need to buy a text so that saved me lotsa moolas. His tests are fair, as long as you attend class and take lotsa notes (no power point).
Very good professor...had a lot of fun in his class
He's absolutely amazing! I've never had a prof who totally loved what he was teaching and made it evident to the class. His lectures were interesting and very entertaining. He's a great lecturer so it's not difficult to take and keep up with notes in that class PLUS he posts all the notes on the internet too! No textbook also = more money for me
Such a great example of good teaching and course material. Highly recommended! Simple quizzes every 2 weeks reducing pressure from a final test, which was during class and not the exam period by the way. Definitely take this class with Dr. McGregor, he's helpful, funny, interesting and engaging. Also helps not having to buy a text book!
I love you, IAN! Really great prof, entertaining, made class really compelling.
He's a great prof. I definitely recommend his class-- his lectures are great, his exams aren't too bad, and he sure is a looker. ;)
He is a awesome prof, he tires his best to help his student learn and really understand the pressure of being a student. He has quzzies in this course to lessen the pressure of exams. I highly recommand he to everyone! He is just that great.
One of the best proffesors I've had so far. Incredibly intresting, and he's not trying to purposely kill you on exams, if you study hard you get an A. Also, his theories on idenity consolidation are incredibly interesting.
He's a good professor. I wouldn't call him great but he did a good job in presenting his material. Considering the material is very simple to begin with, it's an easy course to ace.
he is super
BEST PROF I HAVE HAD DURING THESE 3 YEARS AT YORK UNIVERSITY. PROF. MCGREGOR ROCKS!!!
Ian makes the class incredibly interesting. If you're going to take the class (and if you're in psych you probably should) he's the man to do it with. There was no textbook for the class, but the online readings were pretty interesting to read. The tests are fair if you actually do the readings and come to class.
I was extremelly dissapointed with this class. His lecture style is a mess. He has a lot to say but he has no structure in it, talks full three hours. You have to take notes constantly. The reading are interesting but then his lectures contain different material than the readings and I think it is too much. He talks for 3 hours but never finishes
but never finishes what he started. It is very irritating. If he cannot finish maybe he should cut down a bit and not owerhelm students with so many information at once, even though it might be interessting. His quizes are not bad, if you study you do well. It's just that after his lectures I was so tired I told people not to talk to me:) (Really)
He said he wants to make it easier for students by giving them little quizzes instead of tests to take the pressure off. And then he gives you 40% cumulative final! How does that take pressure off in the final exam time? You have to read so many pgs and then he rarely even uses the readings in the test, its all about his lectures
I think he has great thinks to say and very interesting. If he would manage the class time little better I think people would enjoy the class even better. But otherwise very enthusiastic, nice guy.:)

I thought he was a bit disorganized. Though the material wasn't hard, it's hard for me to see how Buddhism relates to Personality and why 4 readings are dedicated to Freud. Overall, the material he chose wasn't related to Personality, with a few exceptions and I wouldn't advise taking the course with him. His notes were incomprehensible. Tests ok.
He is the best professor I ever have. He is very organized and comes prepared for his class. He likes to give 15% worth exams, which is perfect to get use to the final exam. If you are a good student and read your readings before lectures and attend his lectures, you’ll get good marks. He also puts his lectures and readings on line, which is gre
He is a good teacher but his exams are horrible. the exams focus on insignificant detail which most students do not pay attention to when studying. many of the questions seem hardly related to the course. very unfair method.
most awsome psych prof ever. before this class i decided to change my major from psych to something else, but he gave me back my fate. very interesting and fresh view on the field in general, integrative, multidisciplinarian, but to the point. all readings are as short as possible and no craming needed. approachable, positive and dedicated
He is a nice guy, but his teaching is awful. I had hard time relating different topics that he was covering. The final exam had essay questions which was given to us prior to the exam, it was very ambiguous and lots of people did poorly. I don’t recommend taking this course.
He's an intelligent man, lots of interesting theories and thoughts. But the way Prof McGregor teaches Personality--it may as well as belong in the philosophy dept, but not the psych dept. Thus, expect a philosophy course when you sign up for Personality with him. Exams and readings are fair.
He's completely backwards. You have any more "psychologists" like him around, and we'll be pushed back to the age when psychology was "mental philosophy." Buddha and sexy Greek gods belongs in religion and philosophy. Religion may be relevant to psychology--in the "psychology of religion"! Tests are ok. And he's nice.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!! Take his class! He's so enthusiastic and animative! The work is fair. All you have to do is study and you'll do well!
makes the lectures interesting, he is very funny, not too much or too little amount of reading...cant say anything negative about him...
I've had good and bad profs at York, but Ian is BY FAR the worst one I have ever had.Not too difficult to ace the exams, but listening to him for 3 hrs is a torture.you must attend lectures cuz exams are highly based on lectures. if u want to completely lose interest in psyc, this prof is highly recommended, otherwise, do urself a favour and stick
Interesting class, prof is very engaging.
i get the feeling he was using us as guinea pigs in regard to that online, free textbook thing. i would have preferred a PROPER textbook, even if it cost a 100$. exams are not easy, but not impossible either. he talks for too long. there's a lot of religion, philosophy in his course. altho he *tries* to link it all... it really didn't work.
Great prof! He is very engaging, funny and knowledgeable. Nice guy. I looked forward coming to this class. Free textbook online which is concise and interesting. Tests are fair, not easy. I highly recommend taking this course.
He is a nice guy, funny but his teaching is terrible. He tends to be all over the place, his lectures don?t go well with his readings and there doesn?t seem to be much structure to his class. attenting his lecture hasnt helped me. After this class I am never taking a psychology course again. I feel bad writing this because the guy is really nice
he is a fantastic professor. His lectures are extremely interesting. The exams are quite difficult but if you study very hard from your notes and the text he provides you with, you'll be fine.He also has a wonderful sense of humor. HE'S THE BEST ONE EVER!!!!
His quizzes/midterm exam are simple. His final included two questions worth 15%. The questions were so broad and nondirectional. This wouldn't have been a problem, until the TA (Liliana) told us to make it "short&sweet" because she will be "overwhelmed." Geez, they should've considered making the ques more specific then. The textbook also sucks.
Engaging, enthusiastic, funny, interesting. I loved coming to lectures, they were very cool+interesting.Way more than I expected them to be.I am very pleased to have taken this course.Criticism:Ian still needs to polish up on his delivery of the material; lectures missed some flow, seemed disjointed. But he tries hard and I give him an A for effort!
funny guy, energy. His lectures and readings don't go together. He is disorganized. He presents info, doesn't care if students understand it or not. His m/c are easy/hard no medium. his long answer questions are marked hard. I recommend taking this course with another prof.
Personality. An interesting coruse design linking Ian's interests in theology, social psyc and personality research including his own. Not an easy course & although we were assured that all the components would come clear by the end, we were actually left to make the links ourselves on the 2 essay q's. Great prof, tries hard but crams too much in
Very enthusiastic & funny. Tried to tie in religion & philosophy-->didnt work too well. Must attend lectures to understand material & do well. If u study then u should be fine. Dont expect easy marks tho & he won't bump up individual grades @end even if 0.3% off (note on his site). Study HARD for the final. TA(Liliana)was the worst-rude & unhelpful
he was funny, and kept you amused but the tests were NOT EASY...and the reading were very very WEIRD as he had photocopies of long boring articles. i found it hard to relate the course material to his tests and lectures
Amazing Professor!!!Simply beyond amazing. But in order to enjoy the course content it is neccasay for one to be at a certain level of maturity and have a certain interest in abstract/psychological knowledge. If you arent mature or take least interest in philosophy etc you may not enjoy the course, you'll do bad.Not easy but very very helpful in life.
Very interesting course, lectures were hillarious aswell as full of knowledge! The course is designed in a versatile fashion. It has bits and peices of philosophy and religion and how their linked to psychology.the online text needs to be read carefully and atleast two times. One needs to be immersed in this course to enjoy it.Not a casual psych course
The prof is funny, lecture are sometimes ok, sometimes boring. The philosophy stuffs okay because it really connects with personality. But still, I perfer the using textbook. I feel like we have missed some important personal psyc theories.
liked the small 19% quizzes, gave u time to get adjusted...was very philosophical..not a bad thing...useful for 'meaning in life'...but if ur looking to get into depth about borderline persona, or depressed persona, etc...not really the class for it...abormal psych was more indepth...BUT ur not gonna hate the class, just not what you expect
good guy, nice, class very interesting, but lectures are boring. still, recommended class for sure. do the readings and you'll be okay. marking scheme the most far I had in university.
He is incredibly dynamic, and makes the class soooo much fun! you wont go 10 minutes without laughing. 5 tests, 20% each. Easy, easy A. No textbook.
He's good at teaching. His Personality course is a little more philosophy, but its about 5 tests worth 19% each I believe. He knows how to keep the student's attention. The readings are online, and his lectures are important for the tests.
No textbook! No exam - 5 mini-tests. Lectures are fantastic but part of the tests are written questions that are a bit vague and its really tough to do well. No papers to write which I excel at so its up to multiple choice and writing like a fiend to do well!!
I found this class really easy, i got an A. NO TEXTBOOK, but he does give you readings that he has typed up himself. I found the course interesting, but some of his lectures did get boring. 5 tests (one every 2 weeks)- helps you get a good grade b/c you dont need to know alot of info for each exam. Overall i reccommend this class with this prof
THE BEST PROF! Personality theory is heavily based on primary theories like Freud and Jung so obviously they are included (how could they not be?!)...people complain it's not "personality" but it IS if you conceptually understand the material and the evolution of thinking about personality & abnormality.Awesome guy, take this course!
A good prof who tries to explain complex ideas in simple ways which help those who struggle with doing so on their own. The material was very interesting seeing how he took a completely unique look at personalities. However his way of teaching is definitely not for everyone. I learned a lot in that class and enjoyed it just as much.
He's really cool, awesome, and kinda cute! His way of teaching is super interesting and his powerpoint notes are really good too. There are five tests, each is worth 19% and the rest 5% is for the studies that you'll have to participate in. As long as you do the reading and study in DETAILS his lecture notes, you're good.
His lectures are very entertaining but he is not really covering the material that is on the quizzes. There are 5 quizzes, with multiple choice and 2 written answers which can be quite difficult. You might want to ask what exactly you need to write in the answer. It is suppose to be 1 page per question but I found that there was lots more to write.
Take this course. The way u think will be changed. He doesn't just shove info down ur throat. He makes u think. This is what a university level education should do.
Really good prof. Funny, entertaining, and informative. He made 7pm classes worthwhile. Only downside would be the 5 tests within a semester, but otherwise I'd say it's worth a shot.
Ian McGregor is the Man. Without a doubt he was the best professor that I've ever had. He makes the material come alive and easy to digest. He is also easy to approach.
Great Prof. I highly recommend this class. He was funny, approachable, and his lectures were great he keeps you engaged for the whole lecture, even though it was at seven at night.
Absolutely awesome.
He is very clear. Relates everything he teaches to everyday life situations. I highly recommend him.
An extremely relevant course no matter what your major is. Highly thought provoking and introspective. His ability to relate class material to everyday life is masterful. Take his course, you will not be disappointed.
bEST Prof eVER!!!
He is the BEST prof I have ever had and he is the reason I fell in love with psychology. you have to attend the class and study during the semester. you can get an A+.
I took this course with another prof and failed, took it with this prof and got an A. Excellent course and excellent prof.
He is the best prof I have ever had! His lectures are very interesting and he relates the material to everyday life so it is easy for you to understand. If you attend the lectures and read the material you cam get an A
Awesome prof! He's super nice, interesting, and funny. You could tell he's passionate which makes his lectures more interesting. Best part, we don't need to buy textbooks, he writes up his own summaries and uploads them to moodle. Quizzes/assignments are easy!
Professor MacGregor is very funny and very interesting to listen to. He's a really nice guy :) BUT, I thought his lectures were vague and did not really cover the material on the quizzes (there are 5 quizzes) and the quiz questions were too broad for the multiple choice format. His lectures are worth waking up early for, though! :)
I thought his tests were confusing. Beaware when your taking his classes he likes to post his tests on the overhead and is generally a big distraction. He makes tests confusing and I think he writes his own material for students to read and gives pdfs not books. Overall hard class and alot of reading, memorizing and understanding.
He is honestly an amazing prof. He not only makes the material clear and relatively simple, he also makes it extremely interesting by relating it to your own life. The self-reflection involved in the course is very rewarding. His class was worth coming to at 8:30, he's always enthusiastic and super nice. Definitely would take another class with him
Amazing! he has his own spin on his class with his own personal outlook on the class and the material so he DOES NOT USE A TEXTBOOK he posts all his readings that he wrote on moodle, usually 20-30p. really clear. NO EXAM. class is made up of on line responses, bi-weekly quizzes and 1 final essay (not hard) worth 17%. TAKE THIS CLASS ! (:
Amazing experience! Very interesting material. No final exam, just final essay worth 17%. 8 best quizzes/essays out of 10. Easy course if you like to think!
Personality, with Dr. McGregor, was one of the most interesting and enjoyable courses I have ever taken. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is seriously considering getting into the field of psychology.
This course was amazing, very interesting professor and content, he gives you his book for free in pdf, attend lecture and get good mark, 5 quizzes and 5 mini essays, he takes your top 8 marks, as well as a final essay 17% and research lab participation 3%. He is one of the BEST professors AT YORK!
I would recommend this class to everyone! It was very interesting and fairly easy as long as you keep up with the readings, that he writes himself (much easier to understand and follow along). If you don't want to read them, you just have to attend his class where he presents them. The quizzes/short answer questions were easy! I loved the class!
No textbook! Alternates every week with either a quiz or a short written assignment due online (each worth 10%) based on readings that aren't cumulative for next quiz/assignment. Fun, informative lectures. Final essay is "what did you learn". Breakdown: Best 8/10 quizzes or assignments (80%), final essay (17%), research participation (3%)
UH-MAZ-ING. charming professor who engages the entire class with his lectures. It was such an interesting class I learned so much!! definitely would retake it and recommend it. Easy small quizzes and small reflections. LOVED LOVED LOVED
Great prof, the fact that you can drop some of your marks if they're too low makes this class great. course tests are divided so you have a better chance of getting god grades. every week there is either an essay due or you have a quiz. easy A if you attend the lectures and do the readings. the essays are short and easy so are the test. Fun prof.
Probably the most unusual course I've taken at York, and agonizing to say the least. The 8:30 AM class was a miscalculation on my part, I would rather suffer through 2 midterms and a final, than multiple papers & 8:30 AM anxiety laden quizzes. However, you learn a lot about personality. No text book, but online readings and the prof is animated.
Awesome professor. He seriously has a passion for what he's teaching. His classes are captivating and informative. A great introductory personality course!
AMAZING!!! He is by far my favorite prof at York so far. Psych majors, you will love the syllabus! He is very passionate about the course. Waking up for his 8:30 lecture is very worth it, and I am not a morning person!
A good Prof. who loves teaching and is very understanding towards students. Very engaging in lectures, definitely passionate about the subject. Be prepared to put in the work since there's either a quiz or assignment due every week. Quizes are all easy MC, assignments look easy but the TA marks hard even when you follow the provided instructions.
My experience was that his classes were shallow overviews of the material. Talked a lot about his own research, which was not very original or insightful. He's not that bad--it's very possible to do well in his class. But, there are many other good profs in the department, I wouldn't waste my time and money in his class.
Can't complain. This guy was amazing! Great lecturer and quizzes were easy if you did the readings. You will have a quiz and assignment every other week (it alternates) along with a final essay. 5 quizzes and 5 small assignments and he chooses I think the best 8. For us it was 6/9 because of the strike. Oh and there's no textbook he made readings
It is the most tough I have ever had at Waterloo! FIVE quizzes and FIVE 600 words assignments! plus a midterm and a final. plus a 2400 words final assign. Class average is around 60. No books, unorganized slides. the readings he gave us is not even logical. I can get 90+ in biology and other psych courses, but for this? No comments
This course is a lot of work, there is a quiz or assignment every week. I think he means well but doesn't realize how much work this requires. Overall I did learn a lot from the course.
Quite possibly the worst prof I've had in university. He's enthusiastic but has no idea how much time it takes to do assignments. The lectures are disorganized and he doesn't post lectures and readings until 3-4 days after the lecture, despite assignments/quizzes due weekly. Most of course is focused on his own research.
One of the worst psych courses i have ever taken. He's a good guy but there is so much work for this course and so little payoff (as in grades). Lecture notes are boring and confusing. Assignments are tedious and time-consuming. Would not take again. 5 assignments, 1 final assignment, 5 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final. enough said, would not take again
Content isn't hard - if you've done readings. What irks me is that, in total, there are 17 assessments! Something due each week. Late penalties for one day 30%! It also feels as if it's the first year it's being offered - disorganized! Bottom line: this course takes more than it gives back. If you can keep up, you'll do well. Ian's nice but flaky
Difficult course, but I absolutely loved it! I don't understand why people think he didn't care about his students: he wrote notes to follow + the textbook. He also stayed after class to talk to students for up to an hour. I think he's a genuinely a nice person and if you're into self-improvement, you should take this course. GO TO THE LECTURES!
The course was not difficult if you read the course notes. He provided these which saves students some money. Overall though, I don't feel that he does a good job being a 'teacher' - he doesn't follow through with inquiries about content, doesn't have office hours -you have to wait to speak to him after class as other students do. Lacks direction.
Not an easy fly-through class, but I found the class incredibly interesting. Professor is clearly passionate about his work and I personally learned a lot from the class. Recommended.
Would not recommend. The lecture notes were provided so that was helpful, but the cost was reading a poorly written textbook on the topic. The course itself is all over the place with minor assignments that are meant to pull your mark down rather than give you a chance to show how much you know. Save your money - take another course!
After taking his course, my perspective on success and life changed. Every lecture, I learned something eye-opening and could easily apply the material to my life. They were interesting, informative, and inspirational. If you want to improve yourself and take a course that serves you, look no further.
