Take Benofy if possible.
Smart professor, but can't break down material and teach it to students. He will belittle you and make fun of you in class for asking questions.
Allowed us to take open-note tests and the class average was STILL less than 50% (before his curve that is). Has called some of my classmates stupid when they have sought help from him in office hours.
your phucked... drop your major if you get him cause it is impossible...once gave a take home test and on the top is said " to be completed in 168 hours" game over
his hair cure even looks like devil's horns
I learned nothing from this extraordinarly difficult professor. The tests, all but impossible, are from the notes and not the book, and he cannot break down the material for the student to understand. *NOTE: doesn't change tests much from year to year..
Had him in Fall 94 for Calc I and over 1/2 class dropped because we were failing. Doesn't sound like he's changed in 10 yrs. Finally get to say my piece...he will always suck!!! The man should do research and NOT teach!!!!!!
I really dislike this guy. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! He can't teach to save his life
This guy sucks!! His tests are impossible and he's a mean person too. Avoid at all costs!!
the worst professor I have ever had. Do not take his class!!!! I learned nothing and he was incredibly mean. I think he takes joy out of watching students fail. The saving grace is the final. I heard he was fired- I hope it's true!
drop this class now
I am a 4.0 pre-med student. I studied 90 hours for his first test and got a D with the curve.I did ok in the class only b/c of the final. He made everyone in the class feel worthless. Once said: "You will not see hw on the test. I will not give hw answers b/c they ARE A CRUTCH." He cant teach at all
DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS TEACHER. Whether you study or not, do the homework or not, this guy will break you. Few pass his class, and he is responsible for many leaving any Engineering major. Not recommended for any class.
Do not take! Whatever the cost!
This guy is nuts, impossibly hard but if you ace the final, you can escape with an A. Take someone else and you will learn more
This guy is not real. He is a Robot.
The guy is a complete genius. I learned so much from his class it is unbelievable.
I'm a 3.9 GPA pre-med student and I'd rather shoot myself in the face than take his class again. Worst professor I've ever had. The tests are impossible and have nothing to do with the material taught in class or in the book.
So hard. I would aviod him!! He acts like we are taking this class for a phd level
If I could give him a negative score for easiness, I would. Notes barely coincide with the book (so don't bother doing the problems), and tests have little to do with the notes and the book. The class is more about who you know and how much they know (take-home midterm and final). He is very organized..maybe I learned something from the class??

I remember taking him for a required Weather class and wishing the whole time that I had taken Abell for it instead. I don't know if he still teaches it but I remember him being a pretty bad teacher.
hard teacher-does NOT go by book-can use notes on tests, but don't help @ all-class is more solving problems than plugging in #s & solving for stuff-tells too many stories that don't help w/ explaining material-50 students to 'bout 20 by end of sem-sounds like narrator for science special on discovery channel--good luck-def. gonna need it
Absolutely ridiculously difficult. Yeah, you get to use your notes on the test, and yeah there's a take-home Midterm, yeah there's a curve, but it doesn't matter. None of that is useful unless you are already GREAT at Physics. He teaches like it's a 400 level class, and the problems on the tests, and especially Midterm/Final are designed as such.
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY WHOLE LIFE!!!! Went to class every day, studied for tests and still ended up failing class and i've never gotten lower than a C my life in a class...teaches like we already now what his dorky-ass is talking about when we have no idea...very WEIRD...DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
very difficult, teaches about 2 semesters ahead of where students are in terms of math, very dry sense of humor, class is very well organized, and if your mind is on a phd level you will really appreciate his lectures, tests are unbelievably hard but the curve is fair, and if your not obsessed about getting an A i highly recommend experiencing ian
Didn't seem too bad. His lectures could get monotonous, but the tests were open-note. YOU MUST TAKE GOOD NOTES! People did pretty consistently poorly on the tests, but they aren't that hard if you take very thorough notes (20 questions multiple choice). The book was expensive and unnecessary.
Some of the things said here are true, he is definitely one tough cookie. But, he is absolutely brilliant and makes going to class worthwhile. By the sound of it, he's gotten better. He changed the structure to all take-home tests because we did better on those, but it's still tough to get an A. He's a little quirky, but can be pretty funny.
Most of the comments are accurate. His new policy with take home tests was a joke. The take home test where so ridiculously difficult we spent many hours trying to complete. His grading on these tests was tough; he took points off for everything. If you decide to take Physics with Redmount GOOD LUCK, You will need it
Very great class as long as you TAKE GOOD NOTES. All tests were 20 questions, multiple choice, open note. Topics can get boring, but he really tries to keep it interesting. Super easy to get an A
I'm the same person as the above rating and just want to mention his grading scale is about the only nice thing about him, nothing else. Thats the only way I passed was based on his grading scale. curves really good. Good Luck! Take it at UMSL if you can.
Excellent lecturer. He made a very technical subject interesting with witty, dry humor and short historical stories. The tests were difficult and very conceptual, forget about doing a bunch of calculations to study. I struggled with the first couple of tests, but was able to figure out his style eventually and redeem my grade on the final.
I do not reccomend taking this class. The tests do not follow the book and the book only folows some of the class notes. He does not ever clearly state any answers to the questions he puts on the tests. All answers have to be deduced. There are rarely any examples and the class average on his tests were around an 8 out of 15 each time.
Unless you have already majored in physics, there is no possible way to understand anything this poindexter says. There are 3 exams, final, and weekly online homework assn. Don't bother studying any of the book problems after the first test, they won't do you any good. In conclusion, this guy is a disgrace to his profession and very uncoordinated
Lectures are interesting, and HW problems, while challenging, are reasonable if you read the textbook. However, the material on tests almost seems like it comes from a completely different course. Everyone does consistently poor on his exams even after the curve is applied. Avoid Dr. Redmount.
Redmount is a terrible, terrible teacher. He never follows the book, nor are his tests a fair evaluation of your understanding in the class. I was straight A student until his class. I took physics in high school, yet coming out of this class I feel like I knew less. AWFUL TEACHER. Over half of the class failed with a C- or below.
Extremely unique class indeed. The exams rely solely on pure critical thinking and problem solving. Preparation, in the traditional sense, won't generally get you far. Difficult, but highly thought provoking. Each test is essentially a Mensa society entrance exam.
Dr. Redmount is extremely intelligent; however, I've never taken physics before, and his lectures were difficult to follow. I hated the book, too, because it focused on examples and doesn't really teach you the concepts. His tests are 15 questions and all conceptual. Would not recommend to someone who's never had a physics class before.
Redmount is the most intelligent professor I've ever had. To all the pre-med Bio majors who hated this class - grow up. You may not have gotten the grade you wanted (I didn't), and you might have needed to look up a few things in a math book, but SLU students are lucky to have a professor as smart as Redmount.
Do not take this course unless you are going to be an engineer. He is very intelligent and interesting, but the pre-req is calc I and he uses calc III material. To all chem/biochem/premed students: take regular physics because there is no reason to take engineering unless you want to risk your GPA.
Redmount is an absolutely brilliant professor, and anyone who gets to have him for Physics knows that. He has a wealth of knowledge that extends way beyond many professors, and has interesting lecture. ATTEND LECTURE, take GOOD notes, you will do FINE in this class. I don't have sympathy for people who don't go to class then complain
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. His lectures, the book, and his exams all focus on something different. If you decide to take Redmount, good luck.
Redmount is the worst professor I have ever had. I'm an A/B student who never skipped a class and I worked 10+ hours a week to scrape by with a C in his class. Take physics at UMSL over the summer. DO NOT TAKE REDMOUNT.
Teaches like a philosophy of science class, hw like a normal physics class and tests like its a engineering physics class. HW lectures and tests are all unrelated. Goes out of his way to not be helpful. Is demeaning to his students and is just kind of an ass. He is smart though, so there is that.
"Dr. Redmount is too intelligent to teach intro physics" is probably one of the most common things that students say. I disagree. Part of being truly intelligent is possessing the ability to communicate your ideas to others. To do this, you must understand your audience and adapt to their needs. Dr. Redmount cannot do this and thus is ineffective.
This is waste of tuition you pay not to mention precious morning hours. Plz consider taking physics elsewhere esp. if you are premed/pre-dent. He despises premed and pre-dents and gets kick out of making life miserable for them.
Redmount is one of those people that talks overly fast and extra loud in order to assert the fact that he thinks he is smarter than everyone else. The tests and lecture have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the lecture. There is essentially no point in going to class. The book we use is also written by him so there is no way to learn on your own.
I don't get why he gets so much hate... His tests are all multiple choice and based 100% off of the notes. I didn't even read the book, just memorized his notes. Tests are open note as well. Lecture is super interesting as well cause he talks about random awesome shiz. I'm doing bad in Physics 2 with a diff professor, but Physics I was easy.
Coming from an Engineer who has done average so far at SLU, I can say that Ian Redmount is the toughest professor I've ever taken. However, if you work hard, show up to class, and study you can certainly pass this class. He is very intelligent and knows the material well as if he founded it all. In that respect, his lectures are very inspiring.
Dr. Redmount is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He rambled off topic for ages in lecture, the tests were very difficult and the online homework did not help me understand the material. He was condescending and very intimidating. I would NEVER recommend him. I am pre-med and his class did nothing to help with the MCAT.
Lectures are filled with lots of one-liner style jokes, some are a little dad-jokey. Gives all take home tests, but with very difficult problems. I would for sure take him for another course. Made Engineering Physics 1 and 2 so much better than it could have been.
Very difficult. The book was not necessary at all. Homework was online and had little to do with the notes taken in class; many things had to be looked up online to complete it as well. Tests were take-home and could be worked on with partners; they had questions that required deep thinking and understanding of the material. Would not recommend.
Ian Redmount is the worst teacher I have ever had. He explains nothing in terms you can understand. I am an A student and his class made me want to cry! Get a group together for the take home tests, they are very difficult. Try to find a tutor that can help with the tests. Don't go to class, there's no point. Don't buy his book!
I took his class over the summer and quickly learned how difficult his class was. CHEGG WILL SAVE YOU!!! The homework isn't necessarily hard, just time consuming, and most of the answersformulas can be found on chegg. I failed the first test and got a chegg tutor for the second and got a 90. It's worth the money for a tutor if you want to pass!!
He is not a very helpful professor at all. All of his lectures are straight out of his book: jokes and all. His lectures are confusing and his tests are even harder. Do not take him if you value your GPA. That being said, it is possible to get an A. All of the tests are group tests, so make sure you prepare well fro them.
Literally makes the class harder than the calculus than my Calc 2 class for no reason. He literally just shows off his knowledge during class and is very pompous. Do not take this class because it is not physics 1.
Dr. Redmount has great lectures and awesome dad jokes, but his tests are extremely difficult. However, they're take home except for his final. The tests are going to be difficult because his lectures aren't similar to homework and tests that often.
Do not take Redmount. He tries to make physics as hard as possible to make himself seem smarter. I like physics and am good at it and was appalled by how he taught. He makes you get the book that he wrote, which I did not learn a single thing from. His lectures and tests are similar, but are not similar at all to the homework. Worst teach I've had.
The rest of the reviews are pretty accurate. He is very pompous and loves to show how smart he is. He does calc 3 and diff eq and the coreq is calc 2. For those of you who must take him, wait until the first test and when you have a solid group, all pitch in and buy one book, because you only need it for the tests. A on final means A in class.
Dr. Redmount is by far one of the worst professors at SLU and one of the worst teachers I have ever had in my lifetime. What goes on during lectures, homework, and tests are 3 completely different things. Get yourself a good group with people who already know physics, because you sure won't learn how to do the homework and test problems from him.
I took this class for the Gen physcis (Non-calculus based), knowing that he was a difficult professor for the calculus based courses. What I did not know was that he still expected a similar level of mathematical skill from us. His lectures, homework and tests were very different from each other so succeeding in his class is very difficult.
Gives team take home exams. Also if Final exam grade is better than cumulative grade in class he will replace it.
He's entertaining in class, but his lectures aren't always helpful. He does equations on the board but does not explain specific concepts. The lectures are sometimes related to the hw, but I rely on chegg to help me with hw. Tests are group take home, but very difficult. I have the textbook but I did not open it once.
Okay I learned nothing in this class and the lectures suck. The tests are take home but you don't know what you're doing even if you go to class and don't trust Chegg, it's almost always wrong. BUT... My highest test grade was an 83 but I ended with an A in the class because the final was so easy and it was exactly the "pre-test". Worth it, IMO.
Like others said, the take-home/group exams are a lifesaver. Otherwise passing the class would be hard b/c his exams are hard! He is friendly and entertaining but his lecture notes are almost too advanced for a physics 1 course. He is almost too smart to be teaching a somewhat beginner physics course. Just do the homework and find a smart group.
He's the reason I dropped engineering. Doesn't post slides, rushes through the slides very quickly, when contacting by email it can be very frustrating. Overall you can get through the courses, but your life will be a living nightmare.
Horrendous Teacher. Lectures in class dont often have anything to do with the homework. I learned nothing in this class. Everything he explains is way more complicated than a physics 1 course.
Dr. Redmount is a disgrace to academics and Saint Louis University. He refuses to teach his students concepts that are necessary to complete assigned homework and exams and demonstrates no example problems. He instead rambles about esoteric physics topics. Students pay to receive an education that they are clearly not receiving from Redmount.
Prof Redmount's course will be one of the hardest you will ever take. It will seem that you can not possibly retain everything, and the tests...well you just have to experience them for yourself. If you want to LEARN, I strongly recommend Prof Redmount. 26 years after taking his freshman Chemistry course, he is one of three teachers I remember.
Mr. Redmount was one of the worse professors I have had. His lectures on Physics 1 consisted of a word document with just equations; no visual aids. Redmount provided almost no explanation of what the equations do, instead would ramble about various things like history and local events. The class had no test only 14 HW assignments. Learned nothing.
He is a good professor and by good, I mean he is professor that has a heart for what he teaches and for the students, however, that does not mean his class isn't easy because it's not. You as a student would have to be willing to work hard and persevere whenever it may get tough. One thing I recommend is to listen to his lectures intuitively.
No tests--your entire grade is 14 homework assignments. Lectures are just him rambling about space and obscure science trivia for 50 minutes. Lectures were so bad that 70% of the class completely stopped attending about halfway through the semester. If you want to get an A and also learn absolutely nothing about physics take this class.
Doesn't teach in lectures, instead rambling about the lives of physicists. Claims this is because "it's not all equations" but the homework is just equations. Only grade is homework done on a buggy website you have to buy. Has calc 1 as a coreq but uses calc 3 concepts. He wrote the "affordable" textbook which is just the notes he already provides.
While he may be passionate about physics, his ability to teach is unacceptable for freshman-level physics. He is not helpful with students as he said at the beginning of the semester, "If you email me with questions on the homework, I will NOT help you". Students leave this class without learning or understanding essential concepts of physics.
without a doubt the worst professor i have ever had, if not in the entire world. it is better to take physics at another school and transfer it in than suffer this useless prof. refused to answer questions. grade is 100% homework based but the homeworks are impossible and you cannot get help; tutoring center will report cheating if you ask for help
This prof could not teach for his life of him, but to get an A is really easy. All his homework is online and can be found on Chegg or Brainly and you only have 10 questions every week. There are no exams, and attendance does not matter, doesn't matter if you go in or not you will not learn anything. This was the easiest class of my life at SLU.
Incredible professor
Hands down the worst instructor I've ever had. He makes things extremely overcomplicated and can't teach whatsoever. His examples are him skimming over complicated equations with little to no explanation. Don't bother asking questions bc you will just be made to feel stupid. The upside is that it is easy to get an A bc only HW counts for your grade
You're not going to learn anything but it's an easy A and good if you need to knock out a credit. If you have to go on to physics II I don't recommend taking his class because you'll be very unprepared. He is very nice, but it's just a big yap sesh.
NO EXAMS. Your grade depends on 14 homework assignments that are tricky and time consuming. Lectures don't matter at all just search up how to do the assignments on google and that's it. Don't buy his textbook.
You're not going to learn anything, but you will get an A. I don't recommend taking the class if you have to take another physics course in the future, but if it is just a knock out credit then I recommend.
He is a truly bad professor. You do not need to go to class which is nice and it is all homework and no exams. That is really nice but he is so bad. He doesn't teach and goes on random rants. He just reads of his textbook which he makes us buy. He literally does nothing for the class, he doesn't even grade the homework himself.
Had this guy for Physics 1—he'd lecture to an empty room. 109 students, maybe 10 showed up, and he was unphased. Grades only on homework. He's got some dry humor, but it's classic physicist stuff. You won't learn much or meet him outside class. If you know the material, great—you'll pass. If not, good luck.
Good luck if you ever run into any problems or become hospitalized. Does not check his email, does not care about students and does not accept any paperwork to make up assignments even if you have a valid excuse. The worst professor ever. Does not even teach well. He is the reason the physics department got uncredited.
This professor is not good at teaching. He likes to go off on tangents and random history things. He reads straight from the textbook. He makes rare jokes that are pretty dry. The only good thing is that he grades completely off homework. No exams. If you need to learn stuff, like for the MCAT, do not take him. You will pass, you will not learn.
There was no exam in this class, even final exam, grading was all based on homework due on every Sunday night, there will be 10 problems to answer, you will have 3 allow attempts, but only first time will get full credit, second time you will at least lost 3%. He won't explain anything about homework even you have question with it.
Dr. Redmount is an instructor who excels at teaching strong students: his teaching style is best for those who already have a substantial interest in the subject, as it is often left up to them to learn the finer details on their own. If you are just trying to get credits and don't care too much about the topic, you will have a hard time focusing.
Dr. Readmount clearly knows a lot about physics. The class is an easy A if you keep up with the homework assignments. If you are just trying to get the credit and know little about physics going in, you probably won't get much, if anything, out of the class.
