adds an entertaining dry sense of humour to a boring subject

Sometimes he goes too fast, other times he says nothing. Like him though,

One of the funniest profs I've ver had
Should have some sort of visual aids as we cover the material at light speed.
Study for the final! Beware of being vocal, he will pick on you!

not at all sexy. dry class, he's good at teaching it. don't wear a cap to class!

Tough but fun. Kind of a funnier Ben Stein
He's the greatest professor I've ever had
Practical experience is good, but not when its a 2nd floor firm on Broadway.
this guy's in love with himself. take it in the summer, talk lots, 4 sure A+
Get the course notes, but make sure to go to class as well.
Great professor, funny, friendly, dictates notes too fast.
Funny, makes class interesting, don't need the book, just get the notes
funny stories. Odd sense of humour...could be mistaken for egotistical. Lots of material so get the notes!

goes through lectures super fast, so GET THE PRINTED NOTES!!, and dont need to buy the book, pretty useless, just study off the notes.
Everybody says get the notes! get the notes! ...and I agree, get the notes! But I feel it is my duty to tell you DON'T LET HIM SEE YOU WITH THE NOTES!!!!!!
Gives lectures you can pay attention to. Very smart, funny, and egotistical (in an endearing sort of way). Talks too fast when dictating from the book, but otherwise the class isn't overwhelming.
where do you get his notes?
Great sense of humour. It's fun listening to his story but you'll suffer when exam comes.
get the notes and you don't have to attend his class anymore.
WHERE DO YOU GET THE NOTES..... I HATE THIS GUY....
This was one of the most enjoyable classes I have ever taken. The exam was easy as long as you prepped and knew the key stuff he identified in class. The best class I have ever taken at the UofM!
WOW, A First for the B.Comm. Program at the U of M - a great Professor/Instructor that has humour, intelligence, and a passion to teach and help his students!!! Keep up the great work you do, Professor/Councillor Restall
Intimidating prof. Expects you to know so much history and will pick on students in class. Makes you look stupid if you don't know the answer. Straight foreward exam though. GET NOTES!
THINKS TOO MUCH OF OXFORD , GONE TO HIS HEAD. LET THE BEST GIRLS GO BY. COULD BE HOT IF INTERESTED IN HISTORY. ALWAYS THINKING OF THE RIVERWALK. A BIT SNEAKY WEARS THE CUFFLINKS FOR SHOW.
Teaching style from the 1930's. Expects us to read the textbook in its entirety and memorize everything, without providing anything but personal rhetoric. Having his office hours downtown is a big conflict of interest, and reflects poorly on the faculty. I'd try Harrison, apparently he's better
Take this class with Harrison! I hated going to class cause Restall always picks on students. He doesn't explain things clearly and never speaks in a straight foreward converstational manner (He went to Oxford and lets you know it). Hardest exam i've ever written at U of M, and by far the longest!
Simply one of the best professors I had while taking my degree. Ian is more than willing to help out anyone who is willing to ask.
I heard if you ignore all the questions on the final exam, and instead write five pages on what a God Ian Restall is, you'll get an A+ and a scholarship to Oxford (or "OX-ford," as he'd say it). Seriously, a 100% final? Thay can't get anyone unlazy enough to do some marking DURING the semester?
Very nice person once you get to know him out of class.
Excellent prof. One of the very few profs in commerce that are smart and can also teach. You're missing out if you go into his class with a bad attitude. P.S. - I'm giving Ian hotness points because he puts so much effort into his appearance. The cufflinks alone deserve an honorable mention.
Ian is HOT, smart, funny, Goooood Loookin' and best of all an Oxford man. Love the scarf and the cuff-links!
It was a challenging topic and he made it interesting. The only class that was actually worth waking up at 8:30am to go to. The only Prof at UofM that I sincerely enjoyed listening to. He is Fabulous and a swanky dresser, especially coming from the North End (jk) But seriously, HE TELLS YOU WHAT IS ON THE EXAM! Pay attention and learn something!
Too focused on himself, much less on students.
Amazing professor. I would totally recommend taking Comm Law 2 with him, if you don't mind the 100% final. I took Comm Law 1 with Harrison and found Restall's lectures to be more interesting. Very nice guy too.
The best prof I've ever had!!
The 100% final isn't justified....just have 4 25% tests or something. I just dont get the point of a 100% final. Also, he talks way too fast!! Needs power point or something. Nice guy but not a very good teacher.
He needs to either slow down for note taking or else get power point. Yes we know he is well educated and likes using big words but isn't it obvious when he has to stop the lecture to explain what a word means, perhaps a more layman's term would be beneficial to everyone?

Seriously behind the times and proud of it. He has no slides or handouts; the expectation is that you sit there and copy down copious amounts of verbal spew that comes from him. The class does not change; even from MBA to undergrad so notes are flying around that everyone uses from year to year. He adds absolutely NO VALUE. Skip class w/o penalty.
Mr. MBA is not telling the truth about stuff not changing...true...he probably uses the same notes for the MBA students...but they are so pompous yet usually stupid...imagine...it is only a two year degree, no thesis, and they get a "masters" what a joke...but a well though out venture by the business schools to get big bucks...But Restall A+
A prof who delights in makings others feel below him, get into the 21st century buddy, there are girls here now, and some are smarter than you.

I wish he had slides or just made us read the book because he talks WAY too fast to write anything down. But he is a nice guy and I thought he was a good professor. Yeah, he is a hot shot but he is not rude or anything. I enjoyed the one-on-one conversations we had together. Someone who will be there 10 yrs down the line to help u.Give him a chance
Restall is very friendly and helpful if you give him a chance. The course material is boring and you are flooded with information, but I don't think that is necessarily his fault. The final isn't curved as much as you could hope, so study hard!
Powerpoint would ruin this guy! Tip for anyone taking his class, be prepared to learn about Oxford, the North End and Tony Bennett... it is even better if you can use "tony-isms" when conversing with him. He's funny, cute and interesting. Great Prof.
The only thing I learned in this class was to "Get a pre- nup." Be sure to keep up with the course...its hard to not slack especially since there no midterm but the final is hard BE PREPARED. Other than that the text is useless just go to class and you'll be fine.
WORST PROF EVER! He repeats himself constantly (to facilitate note taking I suppose) which disrupts the flow of his lecture greatly. He doesn't explain things... he recites quotes for an hour. As if it matters what the exact wording was. Absolutely brutal prof. I nearly pull my hair out in frustration every class with his lecture style.
talks really fast its hard to follow along when taking notes, also be ready for the exam some questions come out of nowhere
Ian is an excellent Prof, he's passionate about what he does and an eloquent speaker. Most people have the printed notes that are passed around, so if you have a hard time taking notes quickly, ask a classmate for them. Either way, Ian makes the class interesting, and its refreshing to see a classic gentleman these days(and great sense of humour).
The reason for a 100% final is to test how much of the material you know at the end of the course, which some people don't seem to understand. Nice guy. Helpful. Makes the best of the material he is required to teach I suppose. I think he must have been quite the ladies man back in the day! haha
Restall is dull and a bit phony - I found myself bored in class and frustrated with his side stories. I skipped half the classes and crammed before the final. I got a B. Never even opened the textbook or the notes packs he told us to buy.
He talks so fast n never emphasizes any point which coule be very helpful for students to prepare for the exams. This course is used to be a 100% final exam, but this term they just changed the rule to make a 30% mid-term n a 70% final. This does not benefit us at all cuz he still made a cumulative final which is so hard!!!!!
This is extremely an unfair final exam. just a 2 hrs exam with 25 short answers+4 long answers,no way gonna finish it in 2 hrs.So brutal!!!! Harrison, that guy gave his students 3 hrs to do a non cumulative final which is much easier. Not fair at all!!!!!!!!!!
I took this course in the fall, when there was still 100% final. If you study Restall's notes and go over the definitions and the questions from the previous exams, you'll do just fine. The textbook was useless, so I wouldn't bother buying it.
This guy may seem like like a pompous lawyer type but once you get to know him hes hilarious. Prepare to write and memorize. You will learn a lot in this class.
This class is not easy. There's a lot of things to learn, and if you attempt to memorize instead of understand, you'll get burned on the exams for sure. Although his notes circulate, and they're pretty much word for word to his speech, to truly understand the material the text is a must. Restall's an awesome prof though, funny too. FYI tony bennett
Restall is a great prof. He charges $400 an hour, you get 21 hours with him for the same price haha. You will learn a lot of valuable info in this class. Memorize the 120 pages and you will be golden for the essay exam questions!
This guy adds zero value to the course. all lectures consist of him monotonously reading off his 20year old printed notes. The printed notes are available only to people who can find them from other people, he refuses to distribute ANY materials at all even though he EXPECTS you to have them! Refuses to give more that 70% on exams.USELESS!!!!!!!!!
Only take this class if you plan to work hard. Restall is probably the smartest prof in Asper (former rhodes scholar), and his course demands more than the mere minimum from his students. The midterm is easy, the final is brutal. Those who are able to memorize a lot of information and apply the learned concepts will do well.
He's a quick speaker so taking notes is hard. His notes are also very technical which can slow down studying. You're going to be looking up defns half the time. Also doesn't point out things that you should study for the exam so you have to know everything. He's a nice guy though and not as intimidating outside of class.
Very interesting class and great professor. Do not buy textbooks. Also, get his printed notes from a friend otherwise it would be impossible to take notes. Lots of memorization but I got an A+ so it is possible. Study with flash cards!
Awesome prof. Razor sharp wit and he cares about his students. He's willing to help anyone who makes an effort and asks him for it.
Brilliant man & great course. In my 10+ years of university, I would say this is the best course I've ever taken. There is a lot of reading, which I suggest you do, but the text books add a lot of value. Mr. Restall's sarcasm and wit combined with his unbelievable intellect make him one of the best profs. Subject matter was very interesting too.
Do not take his class if you can avoid!I am so regret that i didn't change my class. There are two prof teaching Commercial Law, just take the other one would do the best of your university life. His marking was so harsh and not to mention 70% on Final. You need to type really fast to take his notes.
Love this prof! Although the course content is tricky to memorize, Restall is hilarious. Students who understand his dry wit will really appreciate this class. Show up, work hard and you should do just fine in his class.
Very smart man, you can tell by the way he talks that he is extremely intelligent. Old School professor. Get the notes before hand (they float around everywhere). Material is very technical,a although not hard. Students get scared by the amount you have to study (100 pages of typed notes or so). Great man, very funny. Put the work in.
Restall is definitely a smart guy who knows his stuff. He makes this class pretty hard. Get the notes from someone or you'll never be able to keep up with him. Go to class as he will also talk about thing not in the notes that will be tested on. This class requires a lot of work and a huge final that you should budget a lot of time for.
Absolute worst. I went in with an open mind, and left hating law, hating him, but most especially hating the way he taught and the way he tested. Everyone told me to study the notes and memorize answers, I did that, and there were questions I've never once seen or recalled him talking about. I heard Harrison's is not cumulative - take it with him!
you will feel so bad when you are in the exam because Ian just need you to remember the whole note. And the other class is laughing because they throw away their notes before mid term. If you have a chance to go into Harrison class, just go and if you don't, wait until you do. I want to give negative on easiness but there is no way to do it.
Everyone complains about this class and I agree, it sucks. However, I got an A+ without the notes that are circulating. I simply attended class and took additional notes from the textbook. All you need to do is put in a lot of work and you'll do fine. Also, questions on the exams are sometimes topics only covered in lectures so attend class.
Really funny guy, makes classes more fun considering the boring subject, could be way worse without the laughs and many breaks. He keeps the mood light and friendly. Take home test is easy. Make sure you take notes because there are no powerpoints. Only downside is no that he doesnt use email if you have questions, but he calls back quickly.
Although I found the class very interesting, and him as a professor quite interesting as well, the way he grades the exams is tough to say the least. Walking out of the midterm I felt good about my answers, and thought I could achieve an A... turns out I got a D! He doesn't give any feedback, no examples to study. Just memorize everything!!!
greatttttttttttttttt teech
one of the best profs at university of manitoba. clear grading criteria, clear lectures and fair tests. try to get a copy of his notes if you can, they are worth their weight in gold. he will literally read directly from the notes students have circulating around. they are essential to the course. textbook is useless.
Top three profs I've had the UofM. If you're smart and want to be challenged intellectually, do your best to engage with and learn from this man. If you're not smart, might get lost.
Love this proff! He is the best.
Ian teaches a course that you probably won't be very interested in unless you want to get into law. The pre-midterm material is important but boring. He lectures and tells you what you need to know, but you won't be able to keep up with note taking, so MAKE SURE YOU GET THE NOTES PACKAGE. Ask anyone you know in Asper for it.
Ian is a very good pro. Even though I don't have any interest in law I still found his class useful and funny. Just one thing, what he covered in class was too much and you can't get good mark unless you work very hard and go through everything he mentioned in class.
I enjoy law. So during the first lecture when I answered a question correctly I got laughed at and was told "I'm glad you can read" and had no idea why. Turns out there is a notes package that contains the answers. He treated me like an idiot after this. Will never forget his face when he saw my A+ on the mid-term. Get the notes package.
Professor Restall was overall a good professor who had a great connection with students. Lectures were always entertaining and he used lots of humour and examples, only thing is LOTS of material. Seems like an easy class most of the semester, but come exams you're studying your butt off. Get the notes package, study hard, you'll do well
very smart. knows what he's talking about. I cant stress this enough, you need his notes if you want to do well. There is simply too much material to get down during class. I bet someone in your class probably has his notes, so go make some friends! Didn't really read the text, his essay, or the constitution book he made us buy. STUDY HIS NOTES!
Toughest com law prof apparently. Get the online notes from someone (good one has 146 pages), lectures will literally be word for word from those notes. Study the practice questions that should be sent with the notes package. If you don't have any friends with it, go to the CSA Office 144 Drake and someone will. It's all memorization.
Initially didn't like this prof. Lectures were hard to follow and notes were extremely hard to copy down. Course slowly got better as it progressed and I found a new appreciation for this prof when I needed his assistance with a personal matter and he was there for me. Make sure to get the summarized textbook notes. They're a must.
Overall a great professor. He seems intimidating at first, but after getting to know him he is very caring and an interesting guy. If you study a week before the final (70%) and midterm (30%) + go to class it will be easy. Make sure you get his note package from a friend.
Great guy, awesome professor. A ton of content in the course, so make sure you stay on top of it. The notes package is a must, as the lectures center around it. If you have the notes, don't buy any textbooks. Overall, Restall is a very smart guy with a lot of insight to share. Added benefit if you wish to go into law-- he is great for advice.
Intelligent guy, engaging lectures, and makes law seem incredibly interesting. He expects you to know a lot, but is also very reasonable. Notes package is a must
Ian is a very interesting and bold personality. I wasen't a huge fan of his teaching method but others didn't seem to mind. No powerpoints or visuals, Ian stands there quickly and orally going tru his teaching material. The course has lots of content and without guidance, I often struggled identifying what I should prioritize studying.
Ian Restall is by far one of the most interesting professors I've taken in Asper. You only have a midterm and final which is intimidating at first, but they are extremely fair. Get the note package and you'll be fine.
Ian Restall was an awesome prof that I learned a lot form. At first the class seems intimidating with no visual aids during class, and a heavily weighted final, but in the end he is a very fair professor. He is also extremely funny and every class would have a good amount of jokes to tell. Overall an awesome professor.
He is a great prof if you are prepared to work very hard. If you are looking for a free ride look elsewhere. He does not want to see you fail, I remember when he gave us back our midterms he said for those who may not be back he wished them all really well and to be successful. Definitely never happy to see a student go and warns of difficulty!
Commercial Law is a course that should seem a tad intimidating to most students. Restall certainly doesn't discourage that expectation. He challenges his students in class but if you prove to be attentive he demonstrates his appreciation. Use the materials he has on reserve in the library for the exams, as well as the widely dispersed online notes.
Ian was a decent prof. I'm not that interested in law so the lectures were bland and studying the material was boring. He doesn't post notes or write on the board so get the notes package and you won't need to go to class, he almost reads right word for word off of it.
Ian prepared me for law school better than any-thing/one I have come across. The pedagogy Ian employs is superior to what you will find in (most) any Canadian law school. Focus on the notes circulating among Comm3300 students, develop your own battle CAN's (condensed annotated notes) you will do well. You are lucky to have access to him as a prof.
Overall disappointing, lectures consists of him reading the course package word for word and then has exams based off information not in the course package. Don't listen to his "hints" of what will be in the exam because they're incredibly misleading. Ian is a smart, funny guy, but at Asper grades are important, and you won't help you with that.
One of the absolute best professors that I had the pleasure of having during my degree. His knowledge of the law is immaculate, and he answers any questions willingly and thoroughly. Make sure you get the notes circulating for his class, as they certainly help. I am in Law School now, and can truly say that Ian's course was incredible prep.
I found the material in the course quite interesting and I myself am not a law student. Ian is a funny guy; he adds stories and some humour when he explains concepts. He also picks people to participate so be ready to be called out. You want visual aid? No visual aid for you. I suggest following the notes package and make your notes from it
Like others said, get the notes! It's dense material, and it's tough to memorize it in-depth for exams. Don't procrastinate, and stay on top of it. But Ian is funny and makes his lectures interesting! Super respectable man, would recommend
Restall clearly knows his stuff and how to teach it. I would however recommend being fairly caffeinated before his lectures as he has a tendency to speak very fast and rush through the topics, as well as cold call on people. However he is always willing to further discuss the content and gives you a pretty good idea of what the exam(s) entail.
Get the note-package and you will do fine! Give yourself lots of time to study, lectures not mandatory because they are literally word for word what he says in class! Exams are medium difficulty, easy if you know your stuff though.
Ian knows his stuff, but for those that say you do not need to attend lecutures are mistaken, exam questions are sometimes based around what he says in his classes and not the notepackage. Also the note packages is outdated, so unless you current year notes do not rely on them. I recommend taking this coure in person, online was more difficult.
Really good guy. Lectures are what you'd expect listening to a lawyer every day. Get a notes package, attend class, add your own notes, and just try to understand. Don't need to know details, focus on application. The "other book" he refers to is not necessary; but I was able to find a copy and it was very interesting if law is your future.
If you have to take this class, take it online. He's not the worst prof but his teaching style was not for me. He just reads off his notes, no visuals, nothing. All you have is the textbook and his lectures. Go to class and take good notes because some topics are based on what he says rather than the textbook. He's ok.
A good portion of his lectures consists of him reading straight from his notes package or quotes out of the textbook. No visual aids in his class either. The questions on the exams are generally fair but can be vague or based on topics lightly covered in class. He also isn't great at responding to emails in my experience. Wouldn't recommend him.
The professor does not use course materials very much, and it needs students to take notes by theirself. As long as you remember the key points of each part, you can easily get a good score in the exam. I just recommend to attend every class.
Only midterm and take home final. No visual aid. Exams are based on notes package and textbook for more in depth answers. Took a while to get grades back.
Ian taught me more than CommLaw he gave me more perspective into business and how contracts work in Canada. Excellent course to learn even more about Canadian politics and how government works.
There are no slides, given notes, or test prep material, but that being said as long as you listen, pay attention, and take good notes you should be ok. Despite being only graded on the two tests, he marks really fair, gives decent feedback on the midterm, and will give a hefty curve if needed.
An honest review - get the notes package, study everything highlighted or bolded. 30% Midterm 70% Final, all hand written. Knows his stuff, reads word for word out of the notes package so majority of people just show up to test date. No work in the class until you have to memorize 40 pages of notes for midterm and 60 for Final. A grind of a class.
Took GMGT 3300 with him. The class is easy since there is no homework until you have to study for the midterm and final. 100% of your grade is based on how you perform on the exams. There is no clear grading rubric but major themes on the exams are identified in class by the prof. My only issue is that he does not have slides and talks a bit fast.
Professor Ian's lectures can move quickly, but staying engaged and taking detailed notes is key. The exams are fair, though the grading rubric is unclear. unstuck study was a lifesaver for exam prep - worth looking into alongside the textbook.
He is good, people hate him cause he dont post lecture notes, just find the notes package lol, but still come to class you will enjoy his lectures!! he genuinely cares about his students and if u ask questions he will answer!! oh reading the notes package will help but i recommend doing more like reading textbooks if u are having a hard time
No notes, no slides. Just lectures. An outdated way to teach. Makes easy concepts hard to score well on simply because you may have missed it in class. You should NOT need to buy a third party notes to succeed in a class. Who knows what he is looking for to give full marks on exam questions, I'm not even sure he does. Overall, he is not great.
Does not post slides or even show slides in class, simply reads off his notes for the lectures. Lots of note taking required which is tough because he talks very quick. Would recommend trying to get ahold of the notes package as it makes life way easier. Only a midterm and final, exams are relatively fair short/long answer essay type Questions.
