Mr. Nice Guy
No Comments
A great guy with lots of personality. Cheers!
excellent teacher
Great prof, great sense of humor too!
he's an awesome teacher making his 7pm lectures more enjoyable than normal..he's anti-establishment: no tie for this guy...very insightful and funny...and the workload is manageable and flexible!!
Ian(as he insists on being called) is a terrific professor with personality and enthusiasm that breathes life into material that would be brutally dull in lesser hands. Never condescending, always ready to lend a helping hand, and quote, "knows [his]
Great prof.!
Wow ! He definetely gives the material life and breathes it in to his students ! A great prof! A class I enjoyed taking thanks to him.
amazing prof. very understanding and flexible. he knows his stuff.
Entertaining, smart and he's passionate about the huge amout of knowledge that he manages thoroughly!!! GREAT PROF!!
I'm a second year student but my first year course with slater was one of the best experiences i've had of learning. He is knowledgable and intelligent and explained all concepts throughly i left that course with an A. He is an amazing teacher if anyone can get into one of his course do it!!!
Had him in my first year and haven't found any better as i am now in my thrid
Even though I'm still taking the course, he's a really warm and reasonable teacher who should be hired full time by the university. He knows his stuff and wants his students to know it too and will bend over backwards almost completely to do it. I wish I had him for other courses in prev. years.
He is the best prof. I have ever met. I enjoyed and learned a ton. He is extremely helpful and have a good sense of humour. Prof. like him are rare specially when you have studied at York U's ITEC depart which got one of the worst profs.
Everyone has said what I'd say already here.
He's a nice guy but don't take NATS 1760, it is just a boring course. Science, Technology and Society seems okay but the way he teaches it it is more of an economic history of science so unless that interests you, don't take it. However he does go through lectures really quickly and post his lecture notes on the course website which is very helpfu
although the content is not the most interesting.. ian makes it somewhat interesting. He is an amazing prof, a great marker, very helpful, approachable and flexible.
Great Prof all-round. Only problem is he talks a little too fast but will always clarify, just ask. Precaution: Talk to him a lot to get participation marks even if you don't have questions. I breezed by but my mark dropped from an A to a B because I didn't need help so I didn't "participate".
One of the nicest and funniest professors you will ever meet. He made environmental science fun (that's hard to accomplish). Kudos, Prof. Slater.
What a guy. Extremely helpful. His class is 1 3hr lect/week but usually finishes up in 1 hr/week....for 6 credits. Really likes his work. Don't even waste the $100 on the text, bec his lecture notes are posted beforehand and cover everything. Extremely approachable for help after class.
Prof Slater is an awesome prof! I highly recommend him to anyone who wants an A in NATS. The 3 hour lectures usually do not surpass an hour, and he is very lenient on late assignments. You don't need to read the readings, he posts full summaries online! All in all, amazing prof! :)
By far one of the best profs at York. Extremely clear and easy going. Encourages group discussion and participation. 3 hour lectures are rarely more than an hour and a half. Had a lot of fun with him. Highly recommended.
although I absolutely hated the class material, he was a very nice, lenient prof. who is extremely enthusiastic about his subject. u are allowed 3 skips before he deducts participation..i didnt rly participate, just emailed him, studied all notes *intensely* nite before the exam and miraculously got an A!!!! he's very clear, and funny too.
Very insightful, and passionate about what he teaches! A man of wisdom and intelligence. Prof. Slater does what he does BEST! Very approachable and easy going. If you're one of those students who dislike science and just need a nats credit but enjoys writing you will do well ! guaranteed! A+
Prof. Slater is a genuinely nice person. He remembers what it is like to be a student and is extremely understanding of a variety of circumstances that can arise. He is super approachable and helpful. Also, adorable. I love this guy and wish he taught ALL COURSES. York could use more of his type. :)
I would have to say hes the G.O.A.T of York never had a prof like him..after every class or break he would answer ALL questions no matter how many people needed help..the man is intelligent a true Dr. unlike some of these paper doctors who are on a ego trip at york..He also makes the material that much better if your not into NATS
Great Prof!! There is absolutely no negative comment anyone could leave about him. Very straight-forward, very helpful, and funny too!! He knows how to make a boring topic interesting and help you get good grades in his class. The BEST!!
Best Prof ever!! He's so easy going, he doesn't care when you hand in the assignment, as long as you let him know ahead. He's just an amazing prof, enjoyed his classes. Funny and Smart! You won't regret taking his class, it's worth it! He just knows what he's talking about and his marking is veryyy reasonable!
Everything you could want from a prof. Lectures dont usually exceed 1.5hrs. Very lenient with marking, attendance, extensions. Makes you want to come to class and ace your essay just so its easy for him to mark and to show him you were paying attention. Looks like Dwight Schrute and Off. Slater from superbad. Laughs like Eddie Murphy. Brilliant A++
Honestly, I sit there in class and I just marvel at what a big heart he has. Possibly the best prof I have had yet, and always makes us laugh, even at 8:30 am. I HATE science... but this guy is just a joy to listen to. He is very sympathetic and understanding. Amazing guy in general, let alone teacher!
Clear, easy to approach and very helpful. His material and objectives are tangible and attainable. He likes to socialize and get to know his students to better engage. And he's hot to boot!
Cool professor - classes don't exceed 1.5 hours - knows his stuff - replies to e-mails very fast - funny and definitely laid back - there's not much textbook use - more of reading articles and chapters taken from books - just a cool guy in general - Best professor in the NATS department - take this course if you're looking for a Gen. Ed. credit.
He is one of the best profs I've come across so far. He is creative, flexible in his teachings and there are no due dates in his class, he has no problem with giving extensions as long as you hand it in within a reasonable amount of time. I would recommend him to anyone.
He is the best for NATS. Nice course to learn and to get a good grade. All you have to do, is to go to his lecture regularly and take notes, do the readings (Not All, the most you can)you have to think in the exam which 1 to answer, because you know most of the things. Nice Prof!!
He is honestly the BEST professor I have had at York. Such a laid back, understanding yet thorough and knowledgable professor. He is funny, witty and brings an interest to science for those who would not usually find it interesting. Excellent Professor. I would recommend him to anyone and I would recommend to him to teach other courses too.
He is extremely hot. I loved his course. Even though I got a C+ in his course, I really enjoyed being in his class.
This guy is the best teacher anyone can ever ask for. He is cool, calm, easy to understand and overall THE BEST teacher i have ever had in my university career. Well done Dr Slater...This Class rocks (if hes teaching it) wooohoo
Had him for 2 years, absolute great prof. Probably the best at YorkU. Very helpful if you're not shy ask questions, has a passion for what he teaches. Go to class, understand what he says, and add notes to his. Reading is not necessary, do not buy the books!
AMAZING. He's honestly the nicest, friendliest and easiest prof at York!! If he's teaching your class, TAKE IT!
The nicest professor I've had. A lot of people told me that getting the NATS course over with was difficult. I'm happy I took a course that I enjoyed and was easy to understand. Prof. Slater was helpful and fun to listen to. I actually attended all classes for the semester which says a lot for someone like me who sometimes loses interest mid sem.
Super friendly, willing to help, TAs do marking which were reasonable but he is willing to look over if you are unhappy w/ a mark, very flexible w/ deadlines, 2 essays and a 40% exam, reasonable exam, marks for attendance, passionate about subject, funny, knowledgable, tries to make classes interesting, classes were not full length, one of the best!
Down-to-earth, funny, and most importantly - he's passionate about what he teaches. He's so personable and easy to talk to with coursework it's ridiculous. Very flexible with deadlines, and the exam is non-linear. If I ever teach university students I'm using his method as my base: carrots work better than sticks.
Simply love him.
Great Guy, highly compassionate, hard on those he thinks want to take advantage though. I had no interest whatsoever in this course, but ended up really enjoying it, you learn so much without even knowing.Lots of assignments though, but they aren't bad overall. We love you Dr Slater.
Is VERY flexible on deadlines. Simply put, he gives back what you give him. He will do everything he can to make sure you do well. TA's mark the assignments but if your unhappy with the mark he will remark your assignment. There is absolutely no way you can do poorly if you come in and put in the work. free marks for attendance. Really nice guy.
Awesome guy. Super helpful and understanding. Makes the content interesting and teaches with enthusiasm. Always available to chat/help. The best teacher I've ever had honestly.
Awesome prof! His flexibility with deadlines really makes it easier on students. He is also awesome at explaining concepts and is more than willing to explain things again. He is very approachable and is willing to help. The assignments were straight forward and he is willing to regrade yours if you ask him to. I highly recommend any class with him
This is a class where you actually learn the material, rather than memorize and forget afterwards. The way he lectures, you genuinely absorb the material. His understanding and flexibility with assignments enables you to do your best work, instead of just trying to meet arbitrary deadlines. Every teacher/prof could learn a thing or two form him.
Honestly, one of the best profs Ive ever had! He's amazing, he cares about his students and wants them all to do well. He is very passionate about what he teaches which makes lectures interesting. I have NEVER been bored in his class. He is very helpful and nice. Enjoyed this class a lot! I would recommend you take it with Ian :)
Dr.Slater is a great prof! He keeps you engaged during lecture and you'll never get bored. When it comes to the assignments he is really helpful. He'll look over any drafts you bring him before the due date and will give you feedback. Also, he is willing to re-grade your assignments if you ask. Take a class with Dr Slater, you will not regret it!!
He is an anwesome prof. you actually enjoy sitting in his class. easy A.
Prof. Ian Slater is very clear in his lectures, fair (even easy) with his term and final exams, and is willing to help any student who approaches him. He gives students a chance to appeal grades on assignments and tests if they are unhappy with the grade or feel that they deserved better. He also grades attendance (10%). An easy A.
Prof Slater is one of the best profs I've had at YorkU. Very easy to approach and seems genuinely interested in his students. Very flexible with deadlines for assignments as well as easy to contact. Best class I've taken in my 4 years at York.
He's a great teacher. I'm not a science lover so his class was great! Easy exams (multiple choice), easy assignments, easy going and understanding prof. You can interrupt his lecture anytime to ask questions and his exam questions are taken right from the lecture summaries he provides in class. Course kit was about $70.
Slater was the best professor I've had at York so far. I reccomend that if you NEED to take a NATS course you take his. He's an amazing professor his lectors are nice, and if you just go to class and do the readings (which there isn't a lot of) You'll do great in his class!
Surprised that I didn't get an A+..lol I came the 3rd among 200 students and felt good on my final as well. He even hintme the answer of a question on the final.Amazing prof though
Kept course very interesting and his lectures are fun to attend. His test aren't hard if you actually did your readings.
Awesome prof! so helpful and makes things so clear. He is always willing to help students during office hours and in class. Funny and interesting prof! Course was so interesting too!
Professor Slater is great! His lectures are fun and interesting. He makes your learning experience fun of laughter and easy to understand. You will do well!Down to earth practical professor.
Slater was by far the best professor I have ever had. The material wasn't that interesting but he made it interesting. Tests were a piece of cake, so flexible with deadlines and so approachable! Take this course.
Amazing Prof. Slater actually teaches well and cares about his students. Very flexible with deadlines and marks fairly. He also explains material fully and concisely without going on useless tangents.
An easygoing and very approachable prof, I even asked a question during a lecture for the first time because he's so nice. Lectures are interesting, useful, short and straightforward. He's also willing to offer help and extend due dates if you ever ask, definitely recommend taking this class if you need a NATS course.
he is the best prof ever, he can give a 3 hour lecture in 1 hour and not miss a thing he is very easy to understand and is a very reasonable man. he is funny, quick, reasonable, helpful and awesome
He is simply the best professor! Recommend him to everyone! I would love to take another course with him!
THE BEST! Entertaining, understanding, passionate about the field, and content was straight forward (no tricks, not trying to make you fail). IMO, lectures are essential to course success, especially for quizzes. But his sense of humour was the greatest incentive to attend a night class in winter. Great choice to fulfill your NATS requirement!
The best prof @ york. So passionate & easy to understand. Lectures are great because he summarizes everything you need to study in his lecture notes. He is such a fair prof and he will never set u up to fail. SO UNDERSTANDING! I LOVE SLATER!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't believe all the good reviews. Ended with an A and I believed it. Class doesn't exceed 1.5 hours. Final exam is hard though and worth 30%. Course kit required and readings must for quizzes and test.
Slater is the man! He managed to make a summer school course bearable with his humor. Teaches the content well, and offers general good advice that can be applied outside the course as well.
Awesome Prof, especially during summer classes. He genuinely wants everyone to do well. Show up to every class, make notes on everything he says and you are guaranteed an A. He's easy to approach and you can ask him anything. I never got bored in his class, and he lectures a 3 hour class in half the time. I highly recommend him.
Great class, great prof.
He's funny, SUPER flexible (you can hand in stuff on the last day of class with NO excuse needed, NO penalty & same with deferred exam) His 3 hour lectures are 45 minutes long. He's very interesting, and down to earth. Very easy to follow. I'm so upset I'm done with his class. Best prof I've ever had. If I could marry him, I would. Seriously.
Great guy, love the short lectures, love the flexibility he gives on the quizzes and exams but the two things that irritated me the most about him were his lack of communication via email and the time it took to get the grades back. He said if we handed in assignments on time we would get feed back within 2 weeks. Its been nearly 2 months now
Best prof. I ever had at York just amazing so helpful and nice. York should have way more profs like him then I'd actually enjoy going to York.
Very flexable, lectures are only an hour
Great Prof. Great course. Slater was my TA as well and he made the tutorials amazing
He is simply the best professor at York University. You cannot go wrong with enrolling in any course he teaches.
this guy is a beauty! Pretty easy class, great prof would recommend. Lectures are short everything you need to know in on the lecture slides. Didn't do a single reading passed with flying colours.
Great prof, funny lectures, gets straight to the point and puts all the readings online! Would definitely recommend anyone taking this course to take it with him. He even makes his lectures last 1 hour. Perfect prof if you ask me.
One of the best teachers (not just profs) I've ever had. His lectures are to the point, short and sweet, interesting, engaging and worth sitting through. He's a very understanding guy when it comes to assignment due dates, although he does take a while to mark them. Overall, I have utmost respect and would definitely take another course with him.
He is a great professor, the lectures are to the point and interesting. Very student friendly, If you need help he is more than willing to provide it and he is very fair. I would recommend taking this course with Dr. Slater.
Easy easy A!
Ian Slater is the best professor. He honestly cares so much about his students. He wants all his students to do their best and is always willing to help. Also a great guy to talk to! Very approachable and always smiling. Nothing but good things to say about this professor. Try to get him as your TA, it will make the course a lot better!
I love you Ian Slater. I hope that one day you see this. You give my life purpose and our intimate time on tuesdays and thursdays (overseen by 203 students) keeps me going. Thank you for everything. I will never forget you. (I'm of age, pls marry) ((Guys, this is how great of a prof he is. He is seriously the best thing York has to offer))
Lectures are interesting and short, there's no textbook required but there are required readings every week. I only skimmed the readings briefly but showed up to the lectures and did very well.
This guy is the real deal. He knows how to teach the course in a way to make the students understand the material. He also knows how to connect with the younger students which I feel is very important in a prof. Assignments were great and although the exams cover a lot of material, if you studied ALL of the material, exams are straightforward.
140 characters is not enough to rave about Ian Slater. He is the best teacher I have had in my life/the best prof York has on their campus'. He is straight forward. The best lecturer in how comprehendible the material becomes once he explains it. The discussion period is worth staying for; he offers great advice for the course, about uni, and life
Lecture from 7-10 but he ended at around 8! He is a great lecturer and the MC exams are not tough if you do the readings. I went to about 50% of class and he is always simple and engaging. Be sure to put in work for the essay because all the written assignments are graded by the TAs. No costly textbook required! He linked all material on moodle
Very good prof. Lectures are short and sweet, and material was much more interesting than I was expecting. Good sense of humor and I think it's adorable he rides his bike to class and shows up all sweaty and disheveled lol. Only complaint is that he takes FOREVER to answer emails.
Great guy. Best prof ive had at York so far. Super funny as well. If you show up and pay attention/take notes in his lectures, you will do well!
Amazing and a funny dude! i'm not going to say this is a bird course but if you do all your reading and stay focused in class you'll get B+ Lots of reading!!!
He is amazing and a very caring and understanding prof. His lectures are very interesting and entertaining, and they only last a maximum of 45 minutes instead of the full 3 hours, which is amazing. He is very clear during lectures and will answer any questions if needed.
Ian was a great prof. He does have office hours, and if you show up, he is very helpful . He is very kind and funny, and adds humour to the lectures once in awhile to keep the class engaged. He posts lecture summaries online at the beginning of the course! Since I do not have a science background, the class was difficult to push through.
Although I dislike the sciences, Ian was a good professor. He is very flexible and understanding in regards to assignments. He also posts all his lecture summaries online which is helpful in case you miss a class. His 3 hour lectures end up usually being up to 1 hour. He uses the remaining time for questions. He is nice too! Very approachable!
Ian Slater is an amazing prof. He is funny and engaging, and explains the material very well. The best part is that he only lectures for an hour, and that there is no textbook (readings are all online). Easy A if you attend lecture and take decent notes!
Just take his course and you will thank me at the end.
This guy has to be the best Prof at York! literally the easiest going guy, and genuinely wants his students to do well. Only downfall is he will probably not respond to your emails for 2 months, but if you go talk to him in person it should be fine. Slater nation!!!
Ian was the first class I took at York and I still find myself looking for classes that he teaches. He is truly the best. He is super laid back when it comes to a lot of things. He makes it clear that he is not there to fail anyone. He allows you to hand in assignments a week late with no penalty. HE IS THE BEST!
Ian is the best professor at York. I had never taken a NATS course and he made it so easy to understand the main ideas of each topic. I attended every class, the way he presents the information is very memorable. He always gives examples that are easy to understand. If you have a chance to take a class with him TAKE IT. CAN I RATE HIM 100???
amazing prof
best prof!!! if you're in first year take nats 1840 with him! it's such an easy class and you don't have to do a lot of work. there's no deadline for anything but if you want feedback asap than its better to hand it in on time he's so chill and really wants his students to succeed.
Really enjoyed listening to his lectures as he can make anything interesting. Very knowledgable and Id take any class that he teaches.
he is really caring and understands your situation. grading is good
Awesome prof. Just show up to the lecture (don't bother with the reading) and you'll be set for the test and exam. Assignments can be submitted late without penalty.
He is an amazing professor. I loved his class and the material was very interesting that it made it easy to pay attention. He really cares for his students and does everything he can for every student. He makes his class stress-free which really helps. Take this class with him!!
Really nice professor, gives good lectures, easy going and very straight forward.
great prof, no due dates for assignments. East A
Honestly one of the greatest professors Ive ever had. Had him in first year and he made the transition from highschool to uni so much easier. Explained slides throughly, always sent the slides in case you werent in class, and always informed us what to study (no tricks). Also allowed us to hand in our work a week after our final exam. Greatest !
outstanding
Interesting lectures. He lets you submit assignments late with no penalty.
best prof ever!!! this guy is amazing! very understanding and easy going. i took his summer class and had to get some stuff deferred cause of some things that happened and he was super patient, understanding and just amazing. hes flexible with due dates which is awesome. seriously just take the class, the course is interesting and the prof awesome
Ian Slater has to be the best prof/teacher I have ever had. Take my word, it was a privilege being a student in this class. He changed my perspective towards the environment in a good way, never had late penalties, always adressed student's concerns in a professional and inspirational manner. Take this course and thank me later, thats all I can say
Best professor of my YorkU experience so far. Genuinely caring person. Amazing lectures which makes you want to listen to him and care more about the environment. Solid class and I highly recommend anyone to take a class with Ian Slater. You will love it.
Most down to Earth prof on York's campus. Very flexible marking scheme. He will literally mark your assignment in 10 mins in front of you if you are in a rush and ask him. He really pushes the boundaries of what education is . Single most memorable course i've taken in my 5 years of york. Nicest man on campus, will not regret taking the course!
Truly the best prof at york. He gives no late marks as long as you communicate with him. if you are in a rush he will grade your paper in like 10 mins. basically tells you what to write for your essays if you ask for advice.
The best!! He's a very thorough and interesting lecturer so I never found myself bored. The subject matter was engaging and it was evident he was excited to be teaching it. Tests are fair, and I always felt well prepared. He was also very open to hearing student's concerns which made the learning environment even better. Highly recommend!
Best Professor I have ever had.
TAKE HIS CLASSES! The material that he teaches is pretty interesting (especially for a NATS course if you're not in that field), and everything was clear and challenging in a good way!
The man's a king
Hes amazing!!
Very understandable
what I would give to have this guy as my prof for each class! this guy is easily one of the best profs ever, if you ever have a chance to take his class, do it! each lecture is so inspiring and is extremely eye opening. no late penalties, no exams (covid), he is so understanding, and is always open to talk! lectures are nothing less than amazing!!
Ian Slater is a great and understanding professor, but more importantly he is a great human being.
He is the best professor !!!! No late penalty. Interesting class. Patient and kind.
take this class if you can!! its an easy a/a+ and Slater opens your eyes to world issues! he is so understanding and there are no harsh deadlines in the class - just submit everything by the last day of class and youre good! fantastic class and prof, I hope to take more classes of his at my time at york! <3
I only attended 2 classes, didnt do a single reading, didnt study at all, and failed the final exam, still ended up with a C+. As long as you do fine on the assignments youll pass no problem with a decent grade. If you actually try in this class, youll get an A .
Today was my first day in his class and he says there won't be any late penalties! Like he is the only professor I have who doesn't;t give late penalties. Like that's amazing. We also don't have to buy and use textbooks and he is just a very nice, caring, and respectful professor. I'm looking forward to this semester!
This professor is very kind, respectful, hilarious, and caring. He is the only professor I have this semester who doesn't give late penalties and will still accept and mark late assignments. I am so looking forward to this semester!
Ian Slater is a legend. There's no late penalties, lectures are interesting, & content is pretty easy. 3 assignments worth 20%, 20%, and 30% & one final exam: 30%. You can tell he truly cares about his students. He is definitely my favourite professor ever. I think every prof should take notes on how he runs his class.
Terrific professor. He's kind and funny, and clearly passionate about helping students do well. No late penalties sounds like an amazing thing but oh boy if you're a procrastinator, not so great anymore. But even so, he's super understanding and gives extensions. He's an interesting prof but this course was so boring (sorry prof).
Honestly, you don't have to be super smart to pass the exam. To me, prof. Slater is very good at explaining the theories. His lectures are always full of students while the attendance is not mandatory. He is very inspirational and friendly and he truly cares about the environment by the way he ride his bicycle to the lecture hall. Best prof overall
He is one of the few inspirational profs that I have ever had. I wish I had more classes with him. He makes learning so easy and he is clearly so passionate about environmental issues, so the entire class ends up being interested as well. I wish I had more classes with him. 100% recommend.
Prof. Slater is amazing! There are no penalties for late submissions which lets you work at your own pace. I recommend speaking to him for feedback on papers because he is willing to help you achieve your goal grade. If you do the readings, attend lectures, study for the exam, and dont leave all the work to the last minute, you will do great!
This professor is amazing with teaching during lectures and allows students to submit assignments late with no penalty! Great professor!
I chose this course purely based on the professor-Prof Slater is in fact very understanding and PATIENT! I can't tell you how many times students ask about the same things in each class although he's given us the answer for the 100th time! Although there are no late penalties, just submit things on time if you want your grades in on time as well.
Great professor, his lectures are really interesting. There are no late penalties for submitting assignments late, so you can take your time in completing them. Final exam wasn't too difficult too.
Cery good
Needed to enrol in a NATS for my degree requirement and I was worried that I would have trouble since I had not taken any biology, chemistry or physics past grade 11, almost 4 years ago. I kept hearing great things about Ian Slater, and so far, he completely lives up to what everyone says about him. Ian Slater is one of, if not, the best prof.
His lectures are very interesting to listen to. He has an example for every piece of content, making it easy to remember. No late penalties in this class! He is clear on what he wants and how he wants it on assignments and exams. By far one of the most interesting classes I have taken at York.
Best Professor at YorkU
Super understanding and caring professor. Assignments are clear and achievable. Ian's lectures are funny and engaging. Wish all the courses I had to take were instructed by him.
Strongly recommended! He provided recordings. No mandatory attendance. Grading is fair and clear.
Amazing prof. Amazing human being. His course is actually pretty interesting too, so you will learn a lot of things that are applicable to every day life by the end of it. Want my advice? TAKE IT!
Only 3 assignments (no mandatory due dates) and an exam at the end, attendance is not taken, lecture are posted online, too much reading. Easy to do well in this class.
Outstanding prof. Lectures are interesting, assignments are doable. Very caring and understanding. Had to rewrite my rating as the old one disappeared. Thanks Ian if you are reading this.
He really does care for his students. The TA's mark harshly for a first year NATS course, but he can sort of help you get the grade u want because he is always open to reading drafts for your assignments after his lectures, which are 3 hours but he uses only 1.5 hrs. He is difficult to access outside of class though, and isn't great with emails.
Ian Slater is the funniest and most enjoyable professor I had . Lectures are fun and conversational and slides are pretty good. He is very fair and is open to help. I didn't do any of the book readings(just learned off the slides) and was able to do great in the course. Beware there is an 8-10pg essay assignment and the exam is 2 mini essays.
I will take any course where Dr. Slater is the professor. What an amazing human being.
Good prof overall. His slides can look boring and is easy to get lost, but he uploads recorded lectures so its easy if u just follow through with that. Usually takes sometime to get to replying to emails, but he will eventually. Had no late penalty for this course, meaning u can submit work any time, which was great.
Professor Slater is a good guy, but I felt like there wasn't much critical engagement with course material (except the essay). Also doesn't provide feedback, and did not receive grades for the final exam and essay.
Engaging lectures and no late penalties make this a solid NATS course. Definitely utilize Unstuck AI and the free textbook to ace the assignments and final exam. Professor Slater is super approachable - just make sure to stay on top of things.
Professor Ian Slater is one of the greatest profs in the history of York University. I regard him as the Superman of Professors who embodies hope, kindness, greatness, peace, love and happiness. He is a professor that wants academic success for his students. If you're looking to take an STS course in the future, Take it with the Great Ian Slater.
Such an incredibly chill prof and just overall seems very caring towards his students. This course has a lot of reading and writing too, but there are no late penalties which means you can take your sweet time. The final was also very fair imo, lots of writing but very fair.
Ian is a legend. The best prof I have ever had. Take his course you wont regret it.
great prof
Prof Slater is super kind and fun. All the lecture slides and recordings are posted online, there are only 3 assignments you can turn in any time with no penalty. Attendance does count for 5% of ur mark The only downside was that the lectures did feel a little rushed, he only uses 1/3 of the scheduled lecture time, its hard to keep up sometimes
This course is a great GPA booster. We had just three assignments, all due at the end of the term, so there was no stress throughout. The final exam consisted of 100 multiple-choice questions based on 10 lectures, all directly from the notes. If you read through the notes once, you'll be prepared.

This class felt way too easy. The lectures were supposed to be 3 hours, but they were only 1 hour, and were often short and rushed. I didn't learn as much as I wanted to. On the plus side: Ian is quite kind and caring, and he gives good instructions for assignments. He's also quite passionate about the material and explains concepts quite well.
The gates of love ain't budged an inch and I can't say much has happened since
Easy to follow and engaging lectures which he went through quickly. Attendance was marked but worth it for the extra credit. The readings he provides are interesting if you have time, but knowing the slides well that he provides with detailed notes is fine for the final. Gives feedback for the assignments. Overall nice guy and is passionate
This course is easy to do well in if you are willing to put in the work. Prof is amazing and will hold your hand through this course. His TA's are questionable in quality and don't mark consistently, but he can review the marks if you ask. Multiple choice tests and no deadline for assignments.
Essay test/multiple choice midterm along with papers. Professor is great but TAs find reasons to dock you marks. If you come to class or watch the posted lectures you'll do fine. Pay extra attention to the written assignments and get them checked over by prof aswell.
Very accommodating and very fair with assignments and exams.
Hes WONDERFUL. He has no strict deadlines because he believes that doesnt always help students. Will say the midterm was 100MCQ so make sure you know your stuff but it is all lecture-based. Hes super chill and really wants his students to succeed. If you need ANY help hes always there to help and if you want to rewrite to get a better mark you can
Super nice, super understanding, and patient with all of our students. The midterm is extremely easy, there are only a couple quizzes here and there. He really wants his students to succeed and will literally try his best to make your load as light as possible.
The lecture slides are bit disorderly with some spelling mistakes, too so its hard to follow along to understand the material properly and thoroughly. They seem a bit old so I feel that they should be refreshed, but overall the teacher is nice.
