There are five essays to write, one oral presentation. Not difficult. I wanted to learn more from the instructor. We had peer reviews, but I needed the instructor to review the essay in detail so that I would know how to modify my writing.
There are a lot of papers due throughout the semester. However, we peer review each one and the teacher goes over it which helps a lot come time for the portfolio. Don't miss class. He counts absences. Good teacher but wouldn't entirely recommend him.
I had him for eng 111. Was not that difficult as long as you do not get behind and do things at the last min. Has five essays and one oral. Would recommend this teacher to anybody!!!!
Don't take his class! He wants you to fail. The class consists of nothing but paper after paper and he is an extremely harsh grader. If you miss more than 2 classes your grade gets deducted. Oh and you have to write 25 full pages worth of journals
I would NOT recommend this professor to anyone wanting to take English 111. His syllabus was no less than 5 pages; which we had a quiz on. He loves to give tricky quizzes!! You will have 5 papers to write as well. He also grades too harshly, imo. If he doesn't like your topic...you're screwed. Don't take him!!
i didnt like the way he talked to me. we had alot of class discustions and when i said anything he just stared and nodded his head and gave no feed back. he made me feel stupid and did not help me.
He is pretty odd. Most of my class liked him, but i just thought i learned more in my junior and senior years of high school.
Do not take his class. I thought he was funny at first but he isn't. His seven page paper assignments are one right after another. Unless you wear a size 1 and have a spanish accent, your hard work is going to be a C at best!
Very good teacher, i will take him for eng 112 also=) if you decide to take his class be sure to do everything on time and not to miss lectures. Prepare to write a lot as well!
English is very hard (not my primary language) but i love Springer-woods class. I took him in Eng111 and Ive learned a lot from him. I'm new in the US when i took him but i never regret taking his class. He is extremely helpful and fair to all. There is only 3 things he expected from a student:Always be on time,Student's papers must be on time and,b

If anything, this professor lacks clarity. You have to ask 10 million times what he expects from his students before getting a halfway decent answer. He uses gaming lingo, which is entirely confusing for one who plays no video games. He's kinda funny, but I'd trade his humor for clarity. other than that he's ok. but try to find a better professor.
this is a horrible professor. stay away. i am a straight A student and still obtained a perfect score, and yet i would never take his class again. he is so incompetent as far as communication. he doesn't respond to ur emails when u need them. he is not so kind. he makes u perform activities that should be for psychology class, not eng. don't take.
i have only one way to describe this professor: EW
Do not take, try's to use a grading system based off mario, which is creative, but very difficult to keep track of actual grade. Not helpful after you have missed a class, and most assignments missed are zeros and not able to do.
Very confusing with all the gaming lingo, not a lot of work, write essays and show up. Gives a chance to correct assignments. Don't take him if you are intgerested in learning a lot or eng major. easy A
he's ok, very animated which works for a night class. It's college so if you think it's too hard, GET A TUTOR. It's not Jr High anymore, the professors aren't here to hold your hand they want you to figure it out. And yes he could be clearer
I liked him as an Eng teacher. He clearly stated what you needed to get an A on the first day. He gives enough chances that if you work hard and show up to class you too will get an A. I would take again....and the gaming lingo was kinda cool!!
He could be clearer.... I never understand what I'm supposed to do or anything. He doesn't e-mail you back. I don't understand the gaming lingo either.. Definitely should work on that.
I had him for a summer semester & we had 3 essays(Bosses)& 2 bonus bosses if you fail an essay but gives you 2 chances for each essay. He uses gamer language but just think of it as a way to make things different. You use your book quite a bit so make sure you buy it.otherwise no real complaints.By the way i took him my second semester there
Sarcastic. Corny. You can tell he grew up watching Star Wars and Star Trek. If the class is scheduled to end at 2:00, then you get out exactly at that time. We never take breaks. Gives busy work, but its easy work. He gives you a chance to redo the work, if it has mistakes. He’s not a harsh grader too. NEVER MISS A CLASS!
Was excited to take Ian for second semester, but I was highly dissapointed. I was a staight A student until this class. Got a C because I couldnt site my sources the right way. But never clear help with this issue. I was a great writer acoording to teach, but that doesnt matter...FIGURE IT OUT ON YOUR OWN>
Took his class for English 111 have never made any bad grades in my life until his class he never explains things he just makes u continuously keep guessing how to fix your mistakes he is forever comparing and referring to world of war craft worst teacher I have ever had didn't matter if you were there or not you learn nothing from him !!!!!
I absolutely loved Ian! He's a fantastic teacher and very understanding. If you communicate with him, he WILL work with you. He's not strict and gives you several chances to fix mistakes. Yes, he's a nerd, but its funny and lightens the mood. He's a very smart man and he wants you to get an "A." You just have to communicate with him. It's not hard. His assignments are easy if English is your thing. If its not, you get several chances to fix it and again, he'll work with you to get you that "A."
I took Ian for ENG 111 and at first I wasn't sure of his teaching technique, but you become accustomed to it. He lets you redo your papers telling you exactly what he wants fixed, so there isn't anyway you shouldn't get an "A." He does NOT give quizzes/tests and you don't have to read entire chapters. I wish he taught 112, I miss him.
This teacher is tough, but teaches you to think outside of the box and teaches differently from others. He does his best to get everyone's attention with his teaching style. GET READY TO WRITE AND TYPE. He will have to writing A LOT. If you have questions he will explain until you understand. Turn things on time. He'll let you revise it.
this class was so boring . he made the whole class into a video game and every thing we did had a video game reference. no test or quizzes just 3 essays and 1 bonus essay. this class was a waste of 2hours .
Do not ask questions!!!! He makes you feel stupid and wrong every time. Other than that you must be really good at writing before you take his class, because once you get lost in the subject, your practically lost forever. It can be a tad difficult if you've missed just one class. The essays you have to write are boring and he uses them every year
Gives a good feedback on papers and gives you more time to correct it. As long as you not lazy to take time and go back and fix your own mistakes, it's an A. Yes, he has a little different teaching techniques but if you can go with it, he's a better teacher than some I met earlier! Show up, do your work and he'll help you up.
Good teacher.
Prof. Springer-Woods is awesome! He constantly makes references to sci-fi, which makes it more fun. He loathes tests and only provides one for bonus points. Get a handle on MLA citation, attend class, and be willing to put the necessary effort into your papers, and you will get an A. Textbooks are necessary for hw, and don't forget a pen and paper!
Horrible teacher. Took him for the summer semester worst teacher I have ever had. Expect plenty of homework and reading. Asking him for help is not helpful at all. He just confuses you even more.
He is funny and good at making the assignment objectives very clear. He has us do a few essays throughout the semester as well as some homework assignments but they are very simple. Essays are very critical to your grade but he gives ample time and beneficial feedback to ensure you get the best grade possible.
The gaming references get old... must be present to every class or you will fail. he's okay... not really sure if I Would take again due to the work load.
The material is fairly easy, but difficult to stay interested in what he talks about. He is different from most teachers. The class is easy to pass, but be prepared for snarky comments for revision.
attendance is mandatory. do all the work and you'll pass. very strict about citing sources
Ian springer, had no intention on working with or helping students in my classroom. His grading is harsh and unfair. Would never ever take a class with him again, and my friends told me I should drop it right when iTold them who my teacher was.
He gives a good grading system and he does peer reviewing on your rough draft papers. He will even correct your rough draft for you and give it back. So you have multiple times to get a good grade on your paper. There's no reason to fail if you go to class and do the work.
Being in class is very important. Classes introduce and explain concepts that coincide with the current assigned essay. He has a sense of humor. Likes to have students work in groups a lot. He tells you exactly what he wants fixed on an essay and gives you a week to correct before turning it back in.
Prior to this class, I have never gotten anything below a B. I passed this class by skin of my teeth. There is no doubt that the way he grades things is unique, and can often hurt you in the long run when compared to a traditional grading scale. He clearly knows the subject, but don't expect any help from him outside of class. Would not recommend.
His directions were never clear.
Took this professor for both English 111 and 112. You will not like this class if you do not like to think. Gained valuable critical thinking skills, noticed a dramatic improvement in my writing capabilities and in the long run gained a lot of confidence in myself and my ideas thanks to this class. Dig deep, don't expect him to hold your hand.
Great professor! Really makes you think and work for your grade. You do use the text books, and there a lot of in class assignments. Also be aware that he does a lot of groups assignments in class as well, and you have to share your essays with your group.
Mr. Springer is alright, the criteria for papers can be annoying. He gives endless MLA practice and doesn't do a good job pointing out the mistakes. He makes a lot of video game references so don't be surprised. However, as long as you put in effort you'll be fine. He does offer a second chance on your essay and good extra credit oppurtunities
Not a hard class if you speak and write English properly. If you use urban dialect you will struggle. Prof is quirky. Lectures are thought-provoking but approach him one-on-one after class and he clams up and becomes very impersonal. Seems to be annoyed with talking one-on-one. Do not take if you struggle with English.
This is a typical Comp II class. The professor is easy to talk to, very patient, and encourages thought provoking discussions. Homework is a little heavy, and you will write a lot of papers... but it's a Comp II class. What'd you expect?
Comp II, prepare to do a lot of homework. You will be writing a lot of papers in this class, but it's Comp II, what'd you expect? The professor is well-mannered, approachable, and attentive. He encourages thought provoking discussion during class. I would take him again.
I took him for Eng 111, and I had a great experience. I've always hated English class in high school, and was dreading going to an English class after over a dozen years of being out of school. Class is exercise based. He lectures for a few minutes, then you do an exercise, or activity. I'm blown away that I'm getting an A, but I did have to work.
I really enjoyed this class and ended up enjoying writing more than I thought I did. You do have to write essays but he gives you plenty of time to them and is very clear on what they are supposed to be on. I also liked how he gave you a chance to make your paper better after turning it in. Very good professor.
I know my comment is late bUT I had him over the summer. He is an amazing professor. He makes you think outside your comfort zone when it comes to writing papers but taking his class has made me a better writer. I highly recommend taking his class!!
He gives good feedback and gives you the opportunity to recieve good critique on your essays before you submit for a final grade. I've seen many complain about his grading system but I think it's fun and cute. He has you earn "gold" and defeat "bosses" (essays) like a video game and he will regularly update you on your grades.
Took his class a while back. If you disagree with him or he just doesn't like your topic, you will be punished for it academically. Uses his position to punish anyone who disagrees and give an easier time to those who agree. Lenient on late work, to his credit, regardless of who it is. Evidence doesn't count unless he agrees with it.
Prof Springer is definitely a good teacher and a nice person. His class is definitely pretty easy. My only complaint is that his grading system is absolutely ridiculous and he doesn't post grades online. The points are set up like a video game (he's a nerd but he's a fun nerd) so it is extremely confusing and you only get your grades at the end.
I took Ian Springer for both College Comp 1 & 2 a little bit ago (Sorry for the late review). I remember that there are Assignments due each week, as well as you need to turn in your daily lecture activity notes. Multiple essays for the class, but he allows you to do corrections afterward. He works with students, which is awesome. Very nice guy
The professor doesnt give clear description for assignment. When you speak with him one on one for clear instructions on the assignment he seems to be very annoyed and continues not to explain the assignment very well.
Hes a very nice guy but when it comes to not understanding the material he seems to get a bit agitated.
This professor asks you as your first real assignment to write an introspective/memoir style piece and does not warn you that it will be read out loud to the class, and then forces you to read it out loud. Super disrespectful and made me very uncomfortable. But now I know. He's chill and nice but I won't be digging deep again.
The worstttttttttttttttttttttttttt. Just the worstttttttttttttttttt. Literally the worst!!!!
Grading scale is wack.
He made me dread English class.
I took this class as a prerequisite for ENG. This was relatively an easy class. Professor woods is a good professor. He really wants you to do good outside of his class. I believe everything comes from a good place from him. Take his feedback as good criticism because he wants you to do better. He makes you work for your grade its not given to you
I think what people may not like about Professor Woods is he actually makes you put in work for your grades. He has a game grading criteria for your grades. The essays are your Boss credits which go up to an A. Your overall work is the Gold points which also go up to an A. I actually liked it. You have to build your grade for an A, its not given.
I have never had trouble with english before, but this teacher only grades based off of wether he agrees with your opinion or not. He does not agree with anything other than what he thinks. He is rude and offers no help, just criticism. Would not recommend his class to anyone, especially for an argument essay writing class.
Every English class I've ever taken I've loved- but by God, this is the first professor I've ever had that's made me dread English class. He's rude and super critical, seriously don't even expect a "good job!" from him. If you're struggling, just drop his class. He won't help you, not even if you spend your first semester of college in a pandemic.
I think his 3/5 (as of 2/22/21) isn't entirely fair, in highschool I hated english class entirely because of writing, so I came into this class expecting to have a tough time, and expecting to fail, which wasn't the case, it wasn't that bad, you gotta participate, especially in the workshops, and you gotta pay attention. be ready for group work.
Im not a student in his class however my partner is via Zoom. I have a degree and let me tell you, this class is hard for me to understand. He has his own made up grading system, constantly comes into class with an attitude, and his expectations are contradictory and inconsistent with what he says vs what he wants. Its hard to do assignments.
Took this class at the start of the pandemic. This was a Saturday only class and he did not properly adjusting his course accordingly to the online shift. He created deadlines outside of our meeting times and went on to add a couple of extra assignments. Many of my classmates could not keep up even though we only had a month left. Finial grade: B
He really does make you work in and out of class. You learn a lot about writing if you choose to listen. He has his own strange grading system which makes things complicated sometimes, but also makes it relatively easy to get an A if you understand it. He is definitely willing to help you if you let him.
it is not worth!!!
His method of grading is unique and can be hard to understand
This Professor uses a grading scale that is hard to understand, He rushes though class and explains things with little regard for if you understand or not, Grading is harsh when it comes to essays, and the topics picked for essays are rough to understand what exactly he wants you to write about, I would recommend looking elsewhere for a class.
This guy HATES logic and is extremely biased and political anything he doesn't like is wrong so.... I didn't check before my first year of college made a mistake he is one of the weirdest guys I've met LOL Dont do it TRUST
. he doesn't give you a lead way to make your grade higher he just tells you to do the class work knowing they won't really have an effect on your grade. doesn't show what grade you get on your assignment(s) just essays which complicates things his class is confusing with "bonus boss" "bonus levels" "gold points" etc.
I just finished my 7 week course and I loved it. It is a lot of work, but there are many opportunities to help your grade if you miss a few assignments. He is a fair grader and a great person, always willing to explain something if you need help. His grading system is different, but not difficult to understand. Loved the course
although he seems interested in helping us learn, the way he tries to teach is ineffective. he is condescending, to students when they get things wrong and often leaves behind vague criticisms on essays. he also has a confusing grading system that left a good portion of my classmates confused.
He asks questions difficultly.
I think he is a smart professor who tries extremely hard to get his students to comprehend assignments. Class participation is a must. The disrespect I have seen when no one answers except half the class is sad. Utilize the chance to find the answers. It's not him who is the problem show up & participate. Grading is easier than you think.
do not taKE THIS CLASS
DONT TAKE!!! His grading system is so confusing and you cant view your overall grade until the class is over. Essay topics are super confusing and hes a very harsh/passive aggressive grader. After each essay he posts bad grammar he caught in the essays and makes the class fix them and makes sure to point out that they are from peoples essays.
If you like a challenge definitely have him as your professor. His grading is confusing, his boss points makes no sense, he responds to emails pretty fast but his critiques can sometimes come off as too harsh, rude or doesn't make sense. Overall it is a confusing class but if you like a challenge do it. If you're like me just don't take this class
I think he is very passionate about writing...however he is EXTREMELY challenging. He is very blunt and seems to enjoy demolishing your assignments. He "attempts" to offer you advice or changes but often comes across as condescending, and usually types his replies in all CAPS which annoyed me. Also 10+ assignments a week and pretty repetitive.
Passive aggressive for whatever reason. Forgot to actually teach. Too many outdated video game references. Had random assignments that had no purpose. Didn't explain that the pages for the physical textbook didn't line up with the online textbook despite suggesting the online over the physical. Didn't have pages numbers for the online text book.
With as much objectivity as possible, Professor Springer-Woods is an okay teacher. However, his personality can be pretty difficult to work with. Definitely passive-aggressive. Always a terrifying moment to see what comments he's written down on your assignments. If you want a passing grade, DO YOUR WORK!
Despite doing well, I wouldn't recommend this professor. The workload was overwhelming (summer semester), with no way to get ahead and assignments locked 2 days before the due date. Grading systems didn't align with Canvas. Very critical, passive aggressive, and dismissive of extenuating circumstances. Well-written work may be flagged as A.I.
Grading rubric is difficult to understand, passive aggressive in his comments, very peculiar when it comes to grading essays. Very.
enjoyed this professor. The grading system is unorthodox but the assignments themselves are quite easy. Was flexible about due dates & always gave chances to resubmit essays & xtra cred essays. Comes off a bit cold, but the critiques he gave did nothing but help me. Classwork was never boring. A lot of partner/group work. Just turn in assignments.
Every major paper you write goes through an initial critique and grading, and then another phase where you are able to utilize his comments to edit your paper and get more points, thereby increasing your grade. Combined with 3 extra credit projects, he sets you up for success. There is a lot of homework so pay attention to the due dates.
This teacher rambles a lot. I never understood anything he told me to do. He explained things, but nothing made any sense. his grading style was confusing. He gave at least 10 assignments a week that were due 3 times a week MON, WED, FRI. His critiques were not clear. Very aggressive with his critiques. I would not recommend.
I do like him as a teacher because you can *feel* yourself getting better. But my god is he passive aggressive. Maybe his teaching would be better in person but if you take his online course be prepared to be criticized heavily on your papers. He goes too crazy over citations even if you try your best to follow the textbook. Very strange grading.
DO NOT TAKE !!! literally taking this class so i can receive credit
He suck if you want to learn, do not take this class
Peak millennial cringe, but it works for him. I can only personally speak about his online classes. I would not take another of his classes online. Assignments were due Monday and Friday and unlocked a few days before they were due. There were many. If you are a full time employee and student or busy, just go in person or w/ someone else.
His grading scale on the syllabus is confusing it takes time to get use to. By showing up in class and doing your class assignments as well homework those assignments are fairly easy. There was a total of 3 essays he had us write Boss 1, Boss 2, & Boss 3. I do like the fact he provided good feedback & allowed redo's. extra credit. Passive agressive
