Very nice guy. Enthiastic about the material. Willing to help. Class is fairly easy if you study and do your work.
I have never had a best teacher like him, he is the greatest of all, i gave him a check plus plus, take him if you wanna get an A++++++,,,,however, one must study in order to get this,,,,,
Great Teacher, knows his stuff and loves talking about it, and makes everything interesting. If you go to class and take notes, you don;t need to study.
an excellent professor
he explains everything clearly, its nice watching him in class, funny, he's hot
hes the best geog prof. in the whole dept. his exams are okay, but the project is very easy! he's a nice guy.
Awesome guy, study for tests and will be fine. He's really hot. Funny, friendly, approachable. Dont really have to read that much just go over notes to study for tests.

amazing professor. he really knows his geography. sometimes he can like to listen to himself talk, but he can be interesting at the same time. show up to class, take notes, and you'll be fine!
awesome teacher, knows his stuff. does a lot of research, tries to make the class fun. really corny, but hilarious when he tries to explain his corniness!! does an awesome project instead of any papers. test reviews are exactly whats on the test.
If you show up to class and read the book you'll do just fine.
He tries really hard to get students to recognize the important role that geography plays in our lives. He goes "the extra mile" when preparing for class. I must say, I was surprised by his lack of approachability. He seemed threatend when confronted with questions. Strange!
TONS OF NOTES, at least 3 pgs a lecture. If you show up for class you will do well, takes his class very seriously, really loves his work. Good overall teacher, very prepared, kinda dorky.
Great teacher. He really knows his stuff and that makes his class really informative and interesting. Really good looking too, so that doesn't hurt as incentive to get to class.
Prof. Ward is very passionate about his work. He is very engaging and pleasant. He was always well prepared for class.
He's AWESOME! Passionate, helpful, fun at times, but will get on ya if you dont do the readings, alot of notes, Interesting project. The kinda class you look forward to.
Awesome prof. really loves geography, show up to class, take good notes (they're alot of them, I used my laptop) and you'll do fine. Start the project early too, it's harder then it looks. Highly reccomend
The class is informative and very useful for any sort of discussion. It's a bit time consuming though in terms of reading. Be prepared to take lots of notes. I advise you to use a laptop. I really did enjoy being in his class even though it consists of taking lots of notes.
THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD...literally. Professor Ward is so helpful and informative. I strongly urge GEO 101 to be taken with Ward, he is the best. You have a project, 3 exams, map quiz, and a project. You will learn alot about geography and its aspects.
Loved, Loved, Loved, this professor. I even thought about failing his class so I could take it again! I highly recommond him! He even inspired my to minor in GIS! Love, love, love!!!!
Ian Ward is an AMAZING teacher and I would always look forward to going to his class. 3 tests (drops the lowest one), map quiz, and one project (which is fun and interestin to do). No doubt in my mind, I would take this class again if I could.
EXCELLENT TEACHER! I would take any class he teaches! You learn a lot about different countries and some history with them. It felt like his class was a travel class, he shows you places hes been. You learn a lot. Very fair teacher, 3 tests, map quiz, and an easy project that helps your grade if its low. Study your notes! Trust me, TAKE HIM!
Excelent Professor. A must for Latin America Concentration. I totally recommend him.
got an A-, exams can b tough, but not that difficult. work hard on the final project, dont leave out any details, and you'll do fine. make a pretty map too!
Very clear and easy to understand. His tests are easy enough if you study your notes and the book. Very interesting class because he makes it so interesting. I always love going to his class. Not to mention, he's pretty hot!
Ian is such an excellent professor and is very passionate about geography. He's excellent at lecturing and knows how to present class material in a clear manner. He's very helpful and he uses a variety of tools to teach (powerpoint presentations, videos, student presentations, etc). Oh yeah, this guy is some great eye candy too. Very cute!
Amazing teacher!!! You can really tell that he loves his field of work and is passionate about it. Makes the material very interesting and i am never bored for a single moment in this class. the exams cover a lot of material so make sure you study a little bit each day to make it easier. Very resonable guy and very willing to help you out!
basically all you do in class is take notes, and the tests are kind of hard but he is a nice guy
Attendance is required since all notes are via powerpoint. He actually knows what he's talking about so it's not as boring as you'd think. He tries to make geography applicable to daily life.

Ward is passionate, and that shows. Attendance is mandatory...all notes are powerpoint and he won't give them to you if you're absent. Tests were surprisingly a tad bit difficult. Regular studying is a must, but overall, an insightful 100-level class. Lots of knowledge to digest.
INCREDIBLE teacher. He's warm, friendly, cares for each student. You have to study and take a lot of notes, but he makes it so interesting and applicable to life that you find yourself looking forward to the class. Discussion is lively and interesting. TAKE GEOG FROM PROFESSOR WARD!!!
AWESOME!!! nice guy, tests are hard unless you study the material well
I LOOOOVE PROFESSOR WARD! <3
Ian Ward was an AWESOME professor. He cares and it shows. Go to class, study the notes, ask him questions if you don't understand and you will do GREAT not to mention you will learn a lot of interesting stuff. TAKE HIM!
professor ward was super nice, friendly and helpful. class was very interesting and relatively easy. expected an A but got like a B or B+ or something. definitely take him! peaked my interest in geography for sure
LOVE prof ward. very interesting, obviously loves what he is teaching. hard class, absolutely must show up to classes. even if you get notes from a friend its less confusing if you hear it right from him. write down everything, it WILL show up on the test. dont take if you miss a lot of classes, you'll never survive.
Ward made the class very interesting and was probably one of my favorite classes to go to this semester. HOWEVER there is A LOT of information to take note of and attendance is MANDATORY to pass this class. great class, but quite a bit of work. study a lil'bit everyday and you'll be str8. holler
Don't let the good reviews fool you. This guy spends most of class talking about his own personal vacations, which makes purchasing the textbook useless. He's a harsh grader, he practically stalks you to make sure you come to class, and he has a rather irritating attitude. Don't let him remember your name, or he'll call you out all semester.
Excellent course. knowledgeable on Latin American studies, great attitude. Shared vacation pictures to show Geography of the region. seems some students need to read the def. of Geography. NOT a stalker, expects you to go to class and not disrespect him by leaving. You do good work, you get a good grade. Textbook use, go back to elem. school
If a professor remembers your name consider yourself privileged, not stalked! The fact that he even bothers to talk to you about missing class means that he cares about your grade and how much you learn. Therefore attend the class that u actually paid for! He is passionate about this subject so u will not be bored + exams reflect class lecture.
He's a decent teacher. Just make sure you go to class b/c he recognizes faces and begins to know who you are. He will randomly call on you in class if he asks a question.
he is a decent professor, but god forbid if you leave class early, he would get pretty mad, other than that he is pretty nice, only thing is he loves to talk about his trip to south america, how is that relevent to Geography???
He really changed my mind about him throughout the semester. In the end I found that he was very helpful and really did care about my grade. You dont need the textbook that much besides map exercises, other than that, study the notes and you're good. Class is not hard nor is it easy, it is challenging tho
Class is interesting learning about Latin America. Tests are are extremely hard due to the map part. Asked the teacher about my grade and he got pissed at me and started ranting about how he couldn't force people to study for tests.
Best Geography teacher ever!!!! Take his class!
interesting class and pretty easy. just show up and listen and take notes and you'll do fine. don't need any prior knowledge of latin america or geography
Class is challenging but fun. He's big on courtesies (showing up for class on time, raising your hand, etc.).
Great teacher. Test are hard if you don't study, but he makesd the class as interesting as he can. He loves what he's teaching
Professor Ward's is an EXCELLENT teacher! He is very articulate and extremely helpful. He wants to see his students do well and he makes class fun with videos, journals, and map exercises etc...not just all lectures. Take good notes during lectures, pay attention, read the book, and you're SET! Oh yeah...Prof. Ward is a cutie too.
The exams are pretty hard. Teacher is very well informed, enthusiatic about teaching the subject, and has a lot of experience. Good class to take, just STUDY hard!! I got a B, so its possible to pass.
His class is pretty hard but he is very helpful and is willing to work with you. The great thing about him is that he really cares about each student. He really should teach small classes.
UGH. Too much work for a 100 level class. You have to take notes, buy the useless book and go to every class, or you'll do horrible on exams. Don't take him. I wish Sheers was still teaching =/
He either likes you or he doesn't, and if he doesn't he'll pick on you for stupid things. His notes have nothing to do with his exams. He doesn't understand this it's a 100 level class which people are taking for their gen-ed or an easy elective. Don't take him!
dont ever take this guy. i dont care what other people say, if you want an easy a, take another teacher. his notes are useless during the exams
he is a great teacher. he loves what he does and he wants everyone to love it as much as him. take good notes (he provides it for you, all you have to do is copy them) and study hard before the exams and you should be fine.
Great Professor, I can safely say that He has the most knowledge about his subject and course than any of my other professors, If you go to class and copy notes you will get an A, He really cares about how YOU do. He has so much compassion about Geography that teaching GGS 101 at Mason is his second job.
He loves teaching and really knows his stuff and tries to get everyone involved. His tests seem like they'll be hard because each one has so much info to study for, but the class isn't too bad if you study. No attendance but he doesn't use BB so you need to go for the notes. Grade made up of 3 or 4 tests and 2 map packets, which u need the book for
He doesn't want you to memorize facts in his notes and instead wants people to "see trends" and "understand regions and why they are" blah blah blah. Thus, his notes are useless and so is the book. Unless you dedicate days to each exam you'll do poorly. Definitely don't take him unless you have a genuine interest in Geog.
Fantastic professor. For everyone who says that the notes are "useless" in studying for the test, you're WRONG! If you memorize the notes and attend class, then you should be fine.
overall not a bad professor but he is pretty hard because of the test are not in the material he gives, well most of it. So i dont know where he gets these random questions, but he does try hard to make the class interesting
this is one of the best professors ive had, people do have a hard time in this class but he makes it interesting, I would look forward to this class all week. Take notes, come to class and study before the test and you will do well.
Tests are fairly difficult and cover a lot of information. The Professor is really engaging though and it is clear that he loves Geography so class is interesting.
Professor's lectures are very interesting. You can tell he loves what he's doing. Mostly used the notes taken in class which he does not provide online (power point). Barely used the book. Tests cover a lot of material so make sure to read your notes after class. Map exercises are take home and not hard at all.
For a 100 level class his tests are pretty hard (I'm a senior and have taken higher level classes that are less in depth). You HAVE to go to class because he doesn't put the notes online, but you can tell he really loves what he does and he makes the lectures interesting. Read the book and show up and you should be fine.
Professor Ward is very professional and extremely efficient. All tests were handed back graded the following class period. He was very accessible and is eager to have his students succeed - if they EARN it. His expectations are clear. Work hard (you're paying for it) or not. Either way, you'll get the grade you deserve. I loved this class.
One of the best professors I have taken at GMU. He knows his stuff and loves the subject. Because of this, the lectures are engaging and don't seem like a waste of time. Tests cover a wide range of material. I recommend downloading a program called Anki and using it to study throughout the semester.
You actually have to study in this class. You have to go to class because he does not post his power points. He is very organized, but his tests are hard. You have to study the notes and the book. This is NOT an easy A.
You can definitely tell that he genuinely loves his subject and wants his students to learn. You have to take notes every day, read the book, and his tests are very hard (although multiple choice, and the lowest grade will be dropped). He's adorable and energetic. It's impossible to hate this class.
You need to attend class and take notes. You need to read the two books he assigns. As long as you do that you will be find. Ward is very passionate and interesting. He is also very forgiving. I recommend this class to anyone studying Latin America or Geography.
He is really passionate about this class. But his exams are HARD. You have to read from the book, and the readings are pretty long
Great Professor! He has traveled the world and has a lot of knowledge about geography and worldly events. Be prepared, exams are tough. Know the material inside out. Map exercises are easy A's.
Professor Ward is a great teacher. He is extremely enthusiastic about his lectures and loves to see you there, and interested. He drops your lowest test grade and also gives study guides for them. Map exercises were time consuming but an easy A. Highly recommend this teacher. Awesome experience
His class is so FREAKING Hard. There are three exams and all of them are so hard. You MUST attend his class because he doesn't post the notes on the blackboard and the notes are really required for the tests and you MUST read every words in the books. But it's so hard class. I didn't like it at all.
Mr. Ward is the best professor Mason has. He starts off class with a slideshow & music of the region he'll be teaching. How cool is that!? It makes you WANT to go to class. His tests are NOT hard if you study all his notes & read the book. GO to his office hours, he is extremely helpful & truly cares. You will learn A LOT! Besides smart, he is hot!
Prof. Ward is one of the best professors I've ever had. Yes, his class requires you to attend in order to understand the content, and the test are somewhat challenging because it's a lot to memorize, but he make the content very interesting, and he's very helpful and kind. And he's easy on the eyes as well, which is a plus, of course.
I'm not a history person, so the class was kind of hard for me. I went to him to receive help and he was very understanding, helpful and kind. The class is interesting though, I would recommend him.
He's a good professor who's always willing to help. This is a difficult class because there's so much information to cover, but if you study you will do well
My favorite professor at Mason. Took geography as a gen-ed with no real interest in the subject. However, Prof. Ward is an excellent teacher. His slideshows are very interesting, although attendance is mandatory because he doesn't put them online. Definitely show up for the last day, he shares some of his experiences traveling- it's very inspiring.
Ok so he is a nice guy and all but everytime i'd go to office hours he would never have time for me even if i emailed him prior to going and showed up early. He would always be waiting for a meeting or something and it would always be with another student who like just showed up no emails or anything. His tests are hard and his reviews suck
Ok, I don't know what this person's talking about, but his class is NOT hard, unless you are a failure... Come to class, pay attention, study notes and you'll do well! I thought it would be tough as I didn't know much about geography, but he was helpful through emails and in office meetings, very accomodating and nice guy.
It was a great class. He was extremely enthusiatic about teaching. Great thing about the class is that it required almost no work at all. No homework or anything. Just 3 exams and a take home exam. I just studied on the bus before an exam and I still got an A or high B. Overall, good gen ed class
Ian Ward was one of the best teachers I took at Mason; he is super passionate about the subject he teaches. He honestly really wants you to be involved and he cares for his students. Not a whole lot of work in his class, just a few tests and small projects. It can be an easy A if you stay on top of your work for him! SUCH AN AWESOME PROFESSOR!
Not gonna sugar coat it, this class requires a lot of work& studying, especially if you're like me and hate history/ geography. But Prof. Ward makes it worth it- if you have to take a geography for gen-ed anyway, take it with him! He is very passionate about his subject, and knows A LOT of information. Plus, he's always willing to help. TAKE HIM :)
This class made me change my major to geography. Professor Ward is extremely enthusiastic about the subject, and it's a little contagious. He was very open and easy to talk to if you caught him after class. He's a little hard to catch sometimes other than that, he isn't on campus a lot. Tests are difficult and will require studying.
The most passionate professor I've ever had. Ward loves teaching and his lectures are amazing. If you go over the powerpoint notes, then you should get easy A on the tests. There are 3 regular tests and he drops your worst one, and then there's a final. I would recommend Ward.
His grading is very straight forward on a points system: 3 exams (drops the lowest) + 2 map exercises + cumulative final. Class is interesting but a lot of information. The exams were tricky and hard. Requires lots of reading & studying to pass this class. Stated "class average is a C" the first day and now I know why- NOT AN EASY A or B at all!
Professor Ward's awesome! Lecture is fun to go to and you really learn a lot. Wish there were more professors like him.
Definitely go to his office hours. If you're struggling, just ask him and he'll help you big time. You will have to spend a lot of time studying for his tests though. But if he sees you working hard, trying to improve every test, going to his office hours, he's really kind in grading... Just don't miss a class for notes (expect A LOT of them)
Professor Ward class is interesting and never boring while exploring the world. I may had some disagreements when we talked about Israel and Palestine conflict but he keeps the class engaging. Must pay attention or else he will put you on the spot in front of everyone. The tests can be tricky but if you read everyday you should be fine.
I really enjoyed his class. Professor Ward was a very good professor who knew his stuff and encouraged the class to do their best! Geography has always been an interest of mine and this class helped it grow! Highly recommend!
Prof. Ward is highly intellectual but expects his students to be on the same level. Teaches a basic course as though it was for a grad student. Grading relies solely on 3 exams and if you need help, he is somewhat helpful if not confusing. Lectures may be long, tedious, and confusing but he does not post notes so be ready to attend every class.
Prof Ward is very knowledgeable about what he teaches. However, I feel like he goes way too in depth for a 100 level class. His tests are hard and lectures are boring. You do have to come to class because there are no notes online. DO NOT bring your phone or laptop to his class. This isn't an easy class but If you study, you'll succeed.
Make sure you write down everything in his powerpoints because anything he talked about in class is fair game for the exam. You can tell that he's passionate about what he teaches and he's more than willing to help you if you need it.
If you go to class and pay attention to what he says and write down everything he has on the powerpoint, you'll get an easy A. He stresses to read the book, but honestly that isn't necessary. He's passionate about what he does and through that makes the class extremely enjoyable to be in. I would HIGHLY recommend to take his class.
Such a sweetheart!! Taking this class helped me find out how much I love geography, it's my major now :) Professor Ward is a really nice guy who is so committed to making people love and understand the material he teaches. He is a really well-spoken professor and if you go to class and take down good notes it's very hard to get less than a B!
After the first lecture I was really impressed. He is great at engaging his students and encouraging interest. He has been all over so he has many stories and pictures from the countries that we were learning about. Really piqued my interest in the subject. His exams are straight forward and follow the study guides pretty closely. Good notes A
His enthusiasm is highly respected, but his lectures were long and difficult. If you didn't read before the class, you won't be able to understand his lecture. He promised us that there won't be a tricky questions, but there were so many. There were so many questions that you had to think twice. Everyone was getting worse after the first exam.
Professor Ward is without a doubt the most passionate professor at GMU. He loves this subject and it shows through his lectures. You really cant skip class but the material is interesting and ward does an amazing job and making you want to listen. Literally take good notes and you will get at least a B. Gives study guides, no HW, & average tests
Great guy! One of the most interesting professors at mason. If he sees you put effort into the class he'll help you out. Exams are pretty straightforward. Must attend every class since lectures are not posted on blackboard. Expect to take a lot of notes. Overall this class is pretty interesting and professor ward was a great teacher!
Really cool guy. His lectures are very engaging; however, he oftentimes calls randomly on students throughout to ask them questions and it can be annoying since some kids just don't know or are trying to absorb the material. I never showed up to class and took it as a joke so I failed but hes one of the most interesting professors I've encountered.
Lectures are interesting, and I manage to stay awake even though the class is three hours long and at night. The tests are pretty difficult for most, although if you are good at memorizing things or study hard you shouldn't have a problem passing. He doesn't take attendance, but if you aren't there for the lectures you will fail the tests.
What a cool guy! I went into this class expecting to find nothing interesting and only wanted the credit. I later found myself looking forward to his lectures because they were so interesting. Professor Ward's enthusiasm about the content made the class much more engaging. He is definitely one of my favorite professors that I have had here at GMU.
Prof. Ward is by far the best Geography lecturer- knowledgable, enthusiastic and just plain nice. He values participation, and doesn't tolerate electronics OF ANY KIND! Great insights, personal stories, picture slideshows etc. Tests are not easy, but if you paid attention and took notes you are fine. Wish I could take more of his classes!
Honestly one of the best professors ever. Pay attention and you'll get more than you paid for.
He is a GREAT professor, but his class is NOT easy. There's 3 exams and he drops the lowest (final not included). His tests are SUPER difficult. There is SO much information that is covered in this class, it's absolutely super overwhelming. I studied hard, and really did try. If you're taking his class just to get the credit like I did, BAD IDEA!
Great class! I was never good at geography, but he made the class so interesting!! As long as you show up to class and do the review sheets for the test , it should be an easy A.
Professor Ward is an amazing professor who cares deeply about geography. Show up to class because notes are not posted online. Class consists of two map exercises, three exams (lowest one dropped), and a mandatory final. He's pretty accessible outside of class. Majority of information on tests comes from notes taken in class. Great class overall.
Professor Ward is a really cool guy! His loud and upbeat personality will capture your attention during lectures. There is a lot of work and most of them are easy assignments. However, his exams are difficult. Great professor but too much work. I regret using my elective credit on this class.
Get ready to learn details, specifics, and nitty gritty facts for the tests. This isn't the kind of class where you can do well by getting the big idea. Generally a frustrating class that goes in to too much detail and takes the fun out of geography. Slides are not posted and the required reading is extremely dated. Take a different regional class.
Professor Ward is a really nice guy, however he expects too much from students for 100 -level course. Each chapter in the textbook averages around 90 pages and he does not post powerpoints to blackboard. Neither does he allow the use of laptops in class, so you have to write out every single slide word for word. Though, the exams are not bad.
Professor Ward is so passionate about geography, and you can see it in everything he does. He puts a lot of effort into his lectures, and wants everyone to succeed. He does not post powerpoints online, so make sure you go to class! Pay attention, take notes, and study them. His class is challenging, but I'm adding a geography minor because of him!
He expects WAY too much for a 101 class. He doesnt post slides on BB so going to class is a must. He may post some slides, but when he wants to. He does not post grades in BB either & exam questions are VERY specific. Class consists of him reading slides & getting mad when no one in class answers ?s cause were all jotting down the slides. STAY AWAY
Ian Ward is a great professor but if you are lazy don't take him. There are three major exams and the final. He drops your lowest exam grade which helps out. But you need to study! His tests are multiple choice but they are hard. He does give a study guides but take good notes! He uses powerpoints so copy the notes don't be lazy about note taking
Mr. Ward is a very good professor and a really nice guy. He is passionate about teaching his students more about geography and wants everyone to do well in class. Also don't just look at the review sheets he posts on blackboard, do some readings and outside research as well if you really wanna get an A.
The greatest life changing professor!!!! He is so inspiring and being in his class is a present!. He loves his job and he is probably the only professor who send students email to do well on their test.
He is an amazing professor and his class is very interesting because he's funny and tells good stories. I was very impressed by the amount of work he puts into helping his students. The key to doing well in his class is to attend his lectures and pay attention. He gives you all the information that is needed for the tests during his lectures.
He acts as if his students are Geography majors & this is our only class. Exam questions are so specific as to "What is the population of this tiny city in Iran?" He told us the only way we will do good is to see him in office hours. He does not post any grades on BB, it was blank the entire semester. Attendance is mandatory to get the slides.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Prof Ward's lectures are amazing and you can tell he's very passionate about what he teaches! It's inspiring. Definitely go to EVERY class and participate or else you won't do as well. He's very responsive to emails and super helpful in office hours. I'd take him again in a heart beat!
Most of the people complaning about his class and how he's a really tough grader on here are those who themselves don't wanna learn and work hard. He's a really nice guy and a respected teacher. He is probably one of the best teachers out there. Although he just teaches one class, he puts in all his effort to deliver his thoughts and helps everyone
Professor Ward is an amazing professor who really cares. Showing up to office hours and asking/answering questions in class goes a long way! He even does review sessions before the final which I highly recommend going to. Wish I would have the chance to have him as a professor again!
Professor Ward was by far one of the best professors I've ever had. He was always willing to help and work with you. Just be prepared to go to every class as there is no outside instruction. He really had some amazing knowledge and personal experience to share with the class. Awesome!
Best teacher that I've had at Mason. He is inspiring and really cares about the subject. Class is REALLY interesting and will keep your attention. Class is not as difficult as everyone is saying, actually quite easy. You will not regret taking!
Good teacher and has good lectures. So much material in the class. Don't buy a textbook, just go to class. I had to put a lot of effort for an intro class.
He's a great professor. Go to his office hours, and it will definitely pay off. Don't bother if you don't want to put in the work, because it is definitely a lot of material - he is very detailed in his exams (and they are long exams that do take a lot of studying). But overall a great and caring professor.
Prof Ward really cares about geography and it shows in his lectures. Though they are long they are still pretty interesting and he tries to get the class involved by asking questions. As long as you show up and take notes, the test and activities should be a breeze.
Professor Ward had an engaging classroom with a lot of content to cover, but was (almost) consistently patient and open minded to his students' struggles. He kept a class median of grades on tests and made it apparent to everyone how they could improve, sometimes throwing out questions that a large majority got wrong to improve grades. Good guy!
Purely lecture where you hand write all the notes. He talks the whole time, but tries to instigate discussion. Skip one day and you'll miss a lot. Exams (4 total, drops the lowest of the first 3) are multiple choice and not hard, but its got A LOT of information. He really knows his stuff and is extremely passionate about the subject.
Professor Ward is very caring for his students and although his lectures are in a big classroom, you can still be able to connect to him. He tries, successfully, to make his lectures as much fun as he can so students can actually enjoy learning, and it works.
Best professor ever. Honestly, he cares so much about his students and puts a lot of effort into delivering the information. He makes is as much as possible so students would want to learn. Youd be lucky to have him
Professor Ward is very caring for his students and works harder than youd know. Yes, it is lecture heavy but its very interesting and you wont regret showing up to class. He is also always available for office hours and very willing to help out in any way.
Very interactive with students. Awesome professor
You wont regret taking this class. The lectures are fun and the material is interesting. The professor is 100% there if you need to reach him and he would be more than willing to help and talk about other topics. Great professor and great lectures!
To be honest, he is very enthusiastic about what he is doing. He's willing to help as long as you reach for help during office hours. He really wants you to pass. However, this is a difficult class. You gotta have to have a basic knowledge and STUDY A LOT!! His exams are not easy. Again, STUDY A LOT! But he's great overall.
10/10 Amazing professor! He's passionate about his job and wants everyone in the class to succeed. Super nice, although he doesn't post the lecture PowerPoints on Blackboard, he's always welcoming to discuss the material during office hours. You will not regret taking his class.
Lecture heavy, can't talk in class, no phones or computers allowed. Tests were multiple choice. Must read the textbook, otherwise you can't pass his tests. Tries to be funny, but no one laughs. PPX in class, must take notes as he says sneaks in things that are not in the PPX's. Berates students for not traveling outside of the US to other countries
A very down to earth person. The class does require you to read the textbook and take down good notes from the slides in order to ace the exams. He has valuable experience to share from his trips and is very caring. The class is not hard at all if you study. If you really love Geography take it with Professor Ward. You won't regret it. Great guy!
been 3 semesters since I took him and still by far my favorite professor. super passionate about what he's teaching and makes lectures enjoyable to attend. exams are multiple-choice and you should get an easy A in the class if you attend most lectures and make sure you study the material. mostly memorizing terms and places. easily accessible too.
In my time at GMU, Prof. Ward has been my favorite professor. His passion for the subject is so clear and the way that he talks about it makes you want to do exactly what he does. The class itself is not difficult as long as you put the work in, which isn't a lot - and it's actually fun if you're in the right mindset. Great class, great professor.
Took him during the Fall 2020 Semester. His class was extremely lecture oriented with periodic readings from the course textbook. The class was tolerable except for when he took moments to drill concepts into unsuspecting people who clearly had little to no background in geography.
Professor Ward is really passionate about geography and traveling, very enthusiastic and knows his stuff. Exams are difficult, but if you show up to lectures and do the textbook reading they are a lot easier. I really enjoyed his passion for the subject and learned a lot. Hes always available to help, so reach out!
He is very passionate about geography which is nice and makes u interested in the class BUT he has a v irritated attitude lik he expects someone w/ little geo background to kind of know everything n makes u feel kind of dumb? He expects too much for an intro class , he is nice but can also work on being aware that not every1 is a geography major
He is passionate about the subject but he does not understand that not everyone is as passionate as him. This is a 100 level course and he could have reduced the amount of content you have to learn to make things more manageable. If you don't mind putting in extra work for the class, you will be fine.
he is super into geography and it makes the class less boring , his study guides for the exams are useless , his office hours aren't helpful either he honestly mansplains a lot and makes u feel stupid for not being into geography lik he is , good teacher with lots of info just a hard class and not the most helpful for an INTRO class
Very very passionate about geography. Honestly course has a lot of content but everything is gone over in lecture so paying attention matters. A lot for an intro course but professor Ward makes it very interesting with his passion and enthusiasm!
I got a good grade but only because I had to dedicate alot of my time to this class because of how unhelpful the exam reviews were compared to the notes. This class isnt even related to my major at all but he makes it like his is the only class you will have. I can see why people like him but also dont like him. Keep an open mind when deciding.
Prof Ward is very passionate about geography. He does not allow technology in class and will call you out if he catches you. There are 3 tests which are a little hard, and 2 map exercises which are easy and fun. To do okay on the tests you do not need the textbook-only lecture notes. To do great you would need the textbook. Just needed the class.
Ian Ward genuinely cares about students and wants their full attention by not using distracting technology devices during class time. He sets his expectations on the first day of class, which its not hard to follow. The exams are not difficult, everything on the exams is information from class/lecture printable notes, and he provides study guides.
Avoid him if u can. He made us buy expensive but useless textbooks. Doesn't allow use of electronics at all. U need to take notes of every single slide yet he goes through them so fast. There's a lot of material to work through and a lot of things to memorize, you'll really have to work for this class.
Professor Ward is very friendly, but class is quite difficult. The entire grade is based on 4 difficult exams. The study guides don't reflect well on them, and there are a bunch of questions that you wouldn't think to write down during a lecture. He doesn't post his lectures. He is extremely helpful, though, if you decide to go to his office hours.
Professor Ward is amazing. He has been my favorite professor at GMU. I didn't know anything about Geography and I got C on the first exam. Fortunately, he drops the lowest exam grade. He makes a lecture very interesting. I even thought about majoring in Geography. If you don't skip classes, you will be fine. All multiple choices.
Prof. Ward is my favorite GMU professor by far. He is really passionate about geography and very entertaining to listen to. Only remark would be that he gets agitated if he feels he is being disrespected (ex: not answering a question, not sitting up in class) NO TECHNOLOGY. 3 exams, worst grade dropped, 2 map exercises (easy), helpful study guides
Professor Ward was okay. I found this class extremely difficult and usually had no idea what material was going to be covered on the tests. I found that the tests and the information covered in class did not match up well. I really struggled and would not recommend unless you have a great memory.
Very straight forward class. Almost no homework except for studying. There are two map quizzes a semester (which are take home and easy), three "mid-term" exams (pretty straight forward and you can drop your lowest one), and one final exam. Professor Ward is super knowledgeable and fun to learn from. I definitely recommend.
The only real downside is that he doesn't allow students to take notes on tablets. If you take notes from class, you don't have to read the textbook to get an A. He gives a few extra credit problems with every exam, which is a nice. Overall he was a nice guy and had very easy exams.
I found this class difficult and usually had no idea what material was going to be covered on the tests. Be aware that he does not share or post his PowerPoint in blackboard. He can be sarcastic sometimes and in some cases intimate some students. During Spring 2023 at least 5 students dropped the class.
Professor Ward was good overall. He is not very accessible outside of class but is always willing to stay after class to answer questions. The class is graded by only 4 exams so make sure to come to lectures.
Nice teacher.
(There is a character count which sucks) he is sarcastic, too strict, makes you feel dumb, unhelpful study guides, doesn't post powerpoint on blackboard, he yaps, makes me sleepy, calls you out. Hes passionate about geography and expects us to be as well. No helpful resources. His only resources are his videos and the textbook. Dont take the class.
I have no CLUE how this guy has such high ratings. Very rude. Snapped in a girl's face. Based entirely on lectures. Some exam questions are based on stuff he mentions for two minutes. It's like ur being held hostage while your dad's friend tells you about his travels and you have to pretend to care. Asked for all students personal phone numbers??
Professor Ward's class is a challenge, but engaging if you put in the work. Lectures are fast-paced, so using unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helps stay on top of the material. Overall, a rewarding experience.
Does not post notes, gives no assignments, can't take notes on devices, can't record lectures. Tests look easy but there's no preps for exams. The study guides are very useless. I suggest typing all notes and studying 3-4 hours for exams. It's the only way you will pass. He is passionate about his job and expects u to know info. Don't take him.
Try to go every class unless you have friends or acquaintance you can get notes from, bc notes are not posted online, a summary with key words is but it can still be confusing. 3 exams, only counts the 2 you do best on and your final. Map activities give you the other points. If you're not good at geo and can't study on your own, take a diff prof.
He doesn't post the lectures online and goes through the slides way too quickly. He makes you feel like you are dumb if you do not pick up fast. No electronics allowed at all and he will call you out for using it. The tests are very challenging, due to the fact that the study guides us unhelpful. Overall, one of my worst experiences here.
U CAN NOT HAVE THE PHONE OUT not even if your mom is calling or texting. I just had an air pod that U have to hide if you want to listen to music. DO NOT SKIP CLASS each class time is important for the test. Be prepared for the 3 exams one of which was 3 weeks apart and on the last week before the final. He will reach out if u are not ok with test.
READ THIS- if u wanna pass do not take this class. I am literally warning u. As an All A and B student, this professor attempts to make you fail. I am fighting for my life right now. but bro do not take this class. he doesn't post slides and makes it hard for you to study at home. TRUST ME. U cant even take notes in class OR take pictures of slides
2 books (you can rent both) there are about 5 assignments he grades on (he drops lowest exam) No tech in class He is honestly one of my favorite professors he has a good reason for everything and explains the whole class really well for pre recorded lectures watch them i. 1.5 but do watch them He will treat a 50+ class as one on one - he cares
Prof. Ward was an amazing lecturer and I can say that I learned a lot a lot in this course. He is extremely well-traveled, interesting, and engaging. It is extremely important to come to lectures because most of your grade depends on the exams. Although he posts a study guide, it does not cover everything that will be on the exams.
stinkus dookus class. no technology allowed, only notes that can be taken are handwritten. save yourself and that small part of your soul that believes in the good and that your professors want you to succeed for this fellow does not.
my grandma died a few weeks into the semester (i told him this) and when i asked if he could share with me what i missed bc i was at her funeral (he doesn't post slides) he told me to "next time get the notes from someone else". sorry i didn't deal with her death in the way you wanted me to. i'll make sure to do that next time she dies man.
Overall, an unpleasant experience. Don't get me wrong, he did reach out to all of his students towards each test to see if you needed help. Hes gonna be there if you need help. But he also had a condescending attitude and treated some students rudely. I'm not paying money to be judged and looked down upon. Please do not take him
Prof. Ward is amazing! His class was easy because his resources are great.
If you have the option, take this class online with a different professor, as the amount of studying required for this basic 101 course isn't justified. If you must take this class with him, be aware that he does not allow the use of electronics, and he will call you out if you're caught taking pictures of the slides, which he does not post online.
very passionate
I skipped class quite often and still managed to get a B which I honestly regret cause all it would've taken to get an A was attend a few more classes. He doesn't post slides so all the info comes from lecture and recordings so attend every class, take notes, review notes maybe once or twice and you got yourself an A.
Great teacher. You can tell he cares about the students. The only criticism is you have to know so much material so well or you cannot pass the exams.
His lectures are very good and he is very knowledgable in what he teaches but your only grades are the 4 exams and 3 map excercises which is only passable if you know the material VERY well. Overall, for a beginners course, it is extremely hard...
Most difficult introductory class I've ever taken. Our study guides didn't cover everything on the exam, and neither did his lectures. PLEASE read the textbooks, and read them thoroughly. The map exercises are free points if you do.
There are almost no assignments. Only grades are your exams which do not follow the study guides given at all. Professor can be very rude and in your face if you're not paying close attention.
Everyone complains because they don't study appropriately. He gives you ALL the information in the lectures for what the exam is on. People cram one day before because it's a 101 class. He is so knowledgeable and even gives extra credit questions to see if you paid attention. Go to class, write notes, study a week before exam, easy A.
Professor is kind and caring of his students. Very hard introductory class. Only graded by exams. Need to know material like the back of your hand if you want to pass. If you looking to have a good grade at the end of the semester, this ain't the one bby.
can not use electronic devices can't record
