He is a really nice guy. Very understanding (you can turn in a paper lat and still get a good grade) You do have to read a lot and write 2 questions for each class but overall its not a bad class.
I didnt enjoy this class, but maybe if i was interested in it in the first place it would of been better! You have to write 2 papers, and they are kinda difficult to write, he does let you send him the rough draft and he will look it over. Exams are kinda difficult!
Has power point notes. Easy to understand. Just topic is sometimes boring. He is a nice guy and loves rugby because he is from New Zealnd.
Lectures are powerpoint and very easy to understand. The discussion sessions help as well. Quite a bit of reading, 2 tests, 3 papers. Overall not a bad class though. He also like rugby and tries to tie it into everything.
Easy to follow, explains what he is expecting, goes over everything he is going to test on. Discussion sessions do help.
I love Ian! He is one of my favorite proffs!
hes awesome, i LOVE HIM AND he really likes rugby. we take a lot of notes, but its not so bad.
This class lectures are boring and sometimes the quizzes are sometimes hard but hes a good guy and class...just keep up with the reading for teh papers
Ian is awesome. Definitely my favorite proff!!! His class isn't too hard, but his papers are tough. Stick with though - it's definitely worth it!
Very good teacher, one of my favorites...his accent is awesome! hes one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet! such a cutie! his papers do require a lot of work , and the course requires a lot of reading...but overall i would definatly recommend him!
Ian is a great guy and willing to help. However, if you don't like to read, don't take this class. There are about 70 pages of reading a week and the weekly quizzes come straight from the reading even though we don't talk about them in class. Papers are long but an easy way to boost your quiz grades.
I totally enjoy this class, mostly because Ian is super cool. He is so intelligent and silly and really really nice. He is very understanding, but does demand you to do the work, not an easy A but definitely a great class.
Ian is very boring in his lectures... you pretty much have to take the notes he gives you on his overhead and them study from them yourself in order to understand... I guess i would recommend him just because he's easy and You're almost guaranteed an A if you go to class and take the quizzes in your discussion group... However, hes not very lenient
No Comments
easy if you go to class and pay attention... cool accent.. very nice.. fun guy.. if you have to take the class.. take it with him.. you get to watch rugby!!
Ian is the goofiest guy I have ever seen. But he is sweet. You get to watch Rugby and other videos a lot. Be sure to watch as he bounces down the stairs everyday. It's so funny. He explains everything well and the tests are simple if you go to class and study a little bit. The one TA freaked me out a bit though.
this class was easy and simple if you go to class and study for exams. you have to have a clear and good understanding of the material to do well on exams & papers. if interested in the subject class is easier, however Ian is clear on the information and doesn't tell you things you do not need to know.
ian is one of the best professors i have had yet.. he explains your assignments and his powerpoints in detail.. you only have 3 papers due and a quiz each friday (that stunk). overall he tries to make learning fun.. definitely take this class with ian!!! hes got a new zealand accent too haha
I loved Ian!! I would take a class with him again in a heartbeat. First of all, I loved listening to him because of his cute New Zealand accent. He also made the material very interesting and easy to understand. We had to write 3 papers, which were kind of difficult, but overall I liked the class. Take Ian!
Great guy! Easy class. He is always willing to help. Class is slightly boring, but worth it for the easiness. You do have to read-he gives very short pop quizzes every once and a while. Readings are very short though, normally just 5-10 pages. Take the class--it's pretty stress-free
Very well-organized power points covering 20-40 pages of required(Won't pass if you don't read) reading per week. Insanely fun to listen to and often opens lecture with a video clip (Monty Python, Flight of the Conchords, Rugby) Philo is a subject that requires you to think about issues from both sides and Dr Young does a good job showing how.
By far the worst class I have ever taken. The structure of the class is terrible. Your grade depends on the random TA you get and how that TA grades. Assigns papers due the day after breaks, exam questions are worded terrible. Grading system does not make sense. Final exam covers the least amount of material and is worth the most points by far
I enjoyed this class quite a bit. It was nothing like I have ever taken before and it made you think outside of the box. And he had a sweet accent and loved talking about rugby.
Pretty cool guy. Class isn't mandatory for lectures, but you should definitely go otherwise you'll be lost. You really don't need to read the book if you go to class. He uses powerpoints that review what you read for that day. Quizzes every friday. Not too bad. Read over notes before taking the quizzes to get good grades. Recommend to help GPA
HE IS A WONDERFUL, HELPFUL MAN. WE ONLY HAD TWO TEST IN HIS CLASS. JUST STUDY AND YOU'LL DO GREAT.ITS REALLY NOT THAT HARD IF YOU STUDY. THE MATERIAL IS INTERESTING. WE DID HAVE 3 PAPERS THAT ARE PRETTY TOUGH.BUT JUST ASK YOUR TA FOR HELP, AND YOU'LL DO FINE. IT GETS BORING SOMETIMES AND THERES A LOT OF NOTES!!! BUT OVERALL, EASY A!
I love him! He's funny, he seems guinely interested in what he's talking about, and he has an adorable accent! Lecture is kinda boring, but it's overall an easy class and i highly recommend it!
AWESOME CLASS! Dr Young is clear and leads discussion well and will revise your papers if you turn them in early. Definetly take this class. Even if your not into politics the class is great.
Ian is great! He is such a kind person and is really passionate about Philosophy. He is very willing to help, especially by revising your papers before you turn them in. He takes the class very seriously, but cracks jokes and has fun at the same time. Just do your work and participate in class and you'll do great!
I really enjoyed this class!
Nice teacher that tries to make jokes and get the class involved. Doesn't really work though. Exams aren't too bad, but there are quizzes every single Friday in recitation. Your grade basically is determined by your group discussion leader because they grade everything. There are 3 paper that are required. Overall alright class.
He is the man!
He is pretty awesome. He tries to be humorous and runs nice and scheduled lectures. He is very kind and will help whenever you need it.
This class is incredibly easy. It is not necessary to purchase the book as long as you pay attention in class and take notes. Very easy A
He is difficult to understand but the class is pretty easy. Your grade is based on your TA not the professor. The class is extremely boring.
This class was amazing! Professor Ian was great, funny, and made everything easy to understand. As long as you go to the lectures, you really dont need to read the section for that day, but go anyway, because he always shows videos and talks about New Zealand. You have to write 3 papers in the semester and take quizzes every recitation class.
Honestly, he's a nice sweet guy but the class was just too boring. All he does is talk, there's no excitement in the class, goes off the power-point and hard to follow at times. 3 Writing assignments which are usually due after or before breaks and are quiet confusing, 1 project at the end of the year & a weekly question every Friday. Good Luck
He's a great person and a great instructor. Very nice and loves talking with students. He is very knowledgeable and uses many examples. Always has a power point that helps take notes. All the info is in the book but he covers all the reasing during lectures. Quiz taken with a TA once a week on the week's lecture. Tests and assignments are tough tho
Great teacher, easy class. If you pass all the Friday quizzes then you should be good.
This class is somewhat interesting, the only thing you need the books for are the 4 papers you have to write, which aren't too bad. Only downside is he makes the exams a little harder, compared to the easy material you learn.
Ian is very clear when describing the material. He is a very sweet person that is very personable and silly. He likes to have fun with the material that we're learning. Ian is also very good at taking and answering questions.
The quizzes throughout the course were based off of 3-4 days of lecture notes, which wasn't too bad. On the other hand there was only 10 questions on the quizzes (sometimes less) so you literally had to read every single word of your notes to try and figure out what the questions on the quiz would be. But the lectures weren't too bad just real long
Dr. Young is probably the nicest guy around, but this class was very difficult. There was a quiz given once a week over 3-4 days of lecture, short answer so if you missed even a day of class they could get very difficult. No notes online and roughly 15-20 pages of reading/night. Quizzes were based on lectures not reading, so go to class
Boring Class, Boring "lectures", Assignments are tedious, Grading is ridiculously picky (IE took off significant points for something not being typed, when he neglected to mention it had to be). Reading Questions are pointless, and do nothing to help with the material. Makes the class be. Don't take unless mandatory.
Decent teacher. He makes you feel dumb if you answer a question wrong. Not approachable at all and is a bit condescending.
Says um and uh a lot like 4 times a minute, tries to be funny and isn't, lectures are long and dull. The class isn't that hard, go to class or have someone else go and take notes because he doesn't put them online. Gives decent extra credit. Grading toughness depends solely on your ta, not hard if you show up semi regularly and pay decent attention
Overall good professor. He's funny, and makes his lectures pretty interesting. He lectures by going off of slides, which he takes time to explain. The course is kind of difficult, but if you read your textbook you shouldn't have too many problems.
If you participate in class you'll do better on EVERYTHING (exams and papers). He is very open to discussion based lectures which makes them so long and boring. He's really nice and will look at your paper early if you ask before you turn it in to grade. He's from New Zealand so his accent is entertaining and his perspective on things is unique.
Ian young is an amazing instructor! If you attend most lectures and the majority of resitations you will do fine. Ian is always open to give extra help and support. I enjoyed attending his classes, his nerdy humor and little quirks made my day. Whenever you see him around campus you are greeted with one of his adorable quirky smiles.
Lectures are long and seem clear in class, but are not at all boring. There is a quiz at the end of each week which you take in your recitation class. Papers are tough and require a lot of thinking but they are nothing impossible. Grading on your papers and quizzes depends on your recitation leader. Lecture notes are not available online.
As long as you attend lectures and take notes there's no reason to buy the textbooks. I passed the class without opening the textbook once.
Philosophy was a course I was scared to take, but now looking back, one of my favorite courses I have completed at BG. Ian is very funny, and makes lectures interesting and not boring. You actually learn the material instead of straight memorization. Pay attention to the essays he assigns, they are worth many points. Just go to class!
Do not take this class. At first you just start off with the boring lectures, which are fine, but starting after midterms, attendance is taken every Thursday for group projects when he only gives 5 minutes for it. The midterm & final are RIDICULOUSLY hard & papers are graded even harder. The class also went beyond the time you're supposed to leave.
If you are someone who participates and end with a cusp grade, he will always bump you up. Lectures can be pretty boring but he lays out the readings very well and that is what the midterm short answers are based on. So long as you're a good writer and thoughtful in discussion you will have an easy time with this class.
Dr Young is a great professor. He ties in current events, pop culture, and lots and lots of rugby (He's from New Zealand) into his lectures to make them interesting. His TAs are very well picked. Dr. Young is very accessible and is the type to ask you how you are doing if he sees you outside of class and actually mean it. Highly recommend.
I love Ian young hes adorable
Classes are very boring and very lecture heavy. Even with this, the class if a pretty easy A as long as you go to class and take lots of notes. Would take again, but just know its not going to be entertaining.
I actually take this professor for a POLY SCI course and I find him remarkable. A little hard to listen to because he seems unsure of himself, but he's a lenient grader who understands the various perspectives in all issues. An easy guy to get along with, and a good sense of humor. He makes high level courses a breeze to experience.
Definitely Lecture heavy. NEED to do the reading! Doctor Young is a very caring and friendly professor but definitely makes you work for your grades.
I loved Dr. Young's class. He is a very nice guy and I would recommend him to everyone. Lectures are all notes from powerpoints, but study the notes and you will be fine. I would take a class with him again.
Lectures are important and you take a quiz every week in recitation so you attendance isn't for credit, but you have to go to do well on the quizzes.
Ian was an amazing professor! Attendance is not mandatory, but he did not post the lecture notes online. However, it would be wise to go to class to get the notes since there are short 20 point quizzes every week. Other than the quizzes and a few papers, the class was easy and a lot of fun!
Quizzes every week, but if you read over your notes you'll be fine. Drops the lowest quiz grade as well. Exams are not too difficult, and papers were very straight forward. This guy's love for rugby is great!
He graded papers very hard and did not give back any feedback whatsoever. He waited until a full week after the semester was over to not only grade our final but also our last two papers that we had turned in many weeks before. So when we all got our grades back it was too late to ask what went wrong or change what we messed up for the next paper.
Attendance isnt mandatory but if you miss you miss all the notes and he doesnt post online. Takes him forever to grade everything. Exams are memorization about the philosophers and their views from lectures. There are 3 large papers and they are the only thing you need the book for in my opinion. Go to the library and use the one there for quotes.
Ian is one of the kindest professors on campus. He's a bit slow with grading but we all have things to do. Try your best, attend class, and ask him if you need any help at all! Attendance isn't mandatory but it is hard to get the lectures if you skip.
If you are interested in taking this course, I would highly recommend Dr. Young. He does an excellent job explaining in lectures. The weekly quizzes are not very hard as long as you pay attention and there are only three major papers. The amount of work is not great and the only tests are the mid-term and final. I would highly recommend this course
Dr. Young is a good professor. He's knowledgable and clearly cares about his students learning. His class was just mostly lectures (that got pretty repetitive) though and we had lots of papers. So if you are willing to write and read a lot you should be fine in his class.
Supposed to have three remote lectures a week. Not once did he even have one. Weekly quizzes were easy and straight to the point. Discussion posts were simple. Papers were cryptically graded and were my only missed points. Lots of grade drops at end. Book was free online (PDF). Take this course if you need an easy 3000 level course!
I wouldn't suggest this professor. He's nice, but so so boring. Was supposed to be an in person class but we are never in person. The midterm and papers are pretty difficult with very little feedback. The only time I ever read out of the TWO books we had to buy was when I had to site them in my paper. Very boring and unexciting class.
If you have to take this critical thinking class, choose a different professor. It is very obvious he is unprepared, all he does is read off the slides and show videos and it's obvious he doesn't want to be there. Papers and exams are so hard for no reason. He grades harshly, and doesn't explain why. Steer clear from this professor for HNRS2020
Young read off a PowerPoint every single day of the semester and the class was so boring. Nothing exciting ever happened and the content was just spewed at us to retain for our essays, mid-term, and final. He provides very little feedback on his grades on the assignments you spend hours writing. I wouldn't recommend this HNRS2020 section for anyone
Ian Young is a wonderful human being, and he is very passionate about what he teaches. His lectures can be somewhat boring sometimes. He also does not give much feedback throughout the semester.
He can be a little boring at times but I think what he teaches is very interesting. He uses a lot of examples and really tries to make it easy to learn. I love this teacher and will try to take a class of his every semester for as long as I can.
Ian is a very old-fashioned professor as his lectures are just reading from a slide for an hour, so it gets boring after a while. He talks about New Zealand A LOT. The recitation is taught by TAs and they will give you weekly discussion posts and short quizzes but they are very easy as long as you go to most classes or get all the notes.
Hes dope
Classes are always lectures, but the powerpoints from the lectures are always posted on canvas so attendance isn't mandatory. There's weekly short quizzes and discussions on canvas, but those are fairly easy as long as you have the lecture notes. TAs run the recitation classes and grade the only two papers written throughout the semester.
Ian is very passionate about the topics discussed and encourages deep discussion on the things we talked about. He also gave good feedback and was very nice. I would definitely take a class with him again!
Ian is a good professor, but the lectures can get a bit boring. There is a quiz and discussion post due each week and a few writing assignments that aren't too difficult. I would take him again because he made this course easier to understand.
Dr. Young is a very simple guy, he's kinda and very well knowledgable in ethics. The lectures can get boring but if you like thinking deep into ethics, he'll get you into some deep thought. Recitation was discussion based (with a grad student instructor) but the lecture was mostly just the professor talking.
He's a really nice guy and never gets mad or upset. You can typically always expect the same thing every class, which is always a lecture. It can be boring, but you won't stress over it too much. He loves New Zealand!
He is a super nice guy. My only issue was it was really just him reading off slides that were from the text book. It was still interesting though, the book covers many topics. Everything is based off the slides and the book. He does not post the slides so either get the book or go to class. No other way to get the notes.
Dr. Young is an amazing philosophy teacher. He doesn't post his lecture slides so attendance is highly recommended. He is great with using modern-day examples for his class. He is very lecture-heavy, but the class isn't that awful. Just take notes from the lecture and you will do fine on the quizzes.
Dr.Young is a really nice guy. His lectures do tend to drag and get pretty boring but he tries to be more interactive by including videos while lecturing. He does not post his slides so come to class if you want the slides, DB weekly, quiz weekly, 2 papers, midterm, and final. No attendance taken, he drops the worst 3 quizzes and worst 3 DB.
Very nice and soft-spoken, don't worry about any negative attitude. Class is VERY lecture-heavy and is quite boring. Make you attend the class, as lecture slides are not uploaded to canvas and the quizzes rely heavily on the content from the slides.
It can be easy to get sidetracked in his class. He usually has 15/20 minute videos that takes up some time. You can only get the slides in class so you have to go to get notes but attendance is not graded. Every week there is a quiz (answers in slides) and a discussion post.
Dr. Young is a very nice professor. He cares about his students and always has a smile on his face. The lecture does not have grades, everything is graded by the recitation instructors. The essays are pretty easy and the 2 exams were easy as well. I would definitely recommend him.
Professor Young taught almost directly from the assigned book and presented the material in a somewhat boring manner. Though, he did seem interested in the material and always encouraged classroom participation. While attendance isn't mandatory, he didn't post the lecture slides online, so if you didn't come, you didn't get the notes. Average class
Dr. Young is pretty fun as he plays rugby clips & gives interesting references. There are 3 essays, weekly quizzes (easy), weekly discussions (also easy), a midterm, & a final, overall relatively easy to handle between lectures & the books. He doesn't post the notes which can be annoying at times, definitely make a buddy.
For a 2000 class we wrote about 6 papers. Every quiz and exam had extensive writing sections which were impossible to complete in the time frame. He constantly showed up late and would spend the first 15 minutes talking about rugby, then fly through lecture to make up for time. No study material was posted either.
Great professor! Very important that you take notes over his slides in class.
His lectures are really valuable he doesnt just read off the slides but genuinely helps explain concepts from the readings and uses really good examples. Im biased because im really interested in philosophy already but very good professor and seems like a chill guy
He's a good professor it's just hard to understand him sometimes due to his accent. You need to sit close to the front to hear him. And he's kinda corny and he likes telling dad jokes.
Highly recommend prof. Young. Attendance isn't mandatory but he will make sure you show up because his notes aren't accessible online and you can only get them from attending lectures or through a friend. Free weekly points on discussion posts; write 50 words and respond to 2 others with 30 minimum words. Recitation every Friday with small group.
Jesus Christ this class was awful. Look, the lectures are boring, their is weekly online quizzes and homework which is not a big deal. But my god his essays and exams were the worst. His essays were not explained well, so it was just a lot of revisions, and his exams were outrageous. The final literally has a take home portion, and worth 200 points
Dr. Young is a fine professor, but his lectures were very boring and we would often sit for 10+ minutes watching rugby matches. Weekly discussion + reading quizzes and the few essays were poorly explained. The final exam had a take home portion that was due prior to the exam and was worth 200 points.
Professor Young is a good professor, but his lectures are often very boring. He is a big rugby guy and will play clips during the lecture. Only grades are discussion boards (1 post, 2 replies) and a 5 question quiz due every week, with 3 4-page essays, as well as exams. Exams have written responses and essays in them, and essay grading is tough.
The class wasn't hard but if you do miss a day make sure you have a friend in the class because he does not post the notes after the lectures. Otherwise it's not a hard course you just have to show up and pay attention.
Ian was a pretty good professor. The lectures tended to be a little boring at times, but as long as you go to class, take notes, pay attention, and submit your work on time its an easy A. For assignments there are discussion boards and 5 question quizzes every week, but they are not bad at all. The midterm and final exams were pretty easy too.
The lectures were boring and notes weren't accessible online so attendance is mandatory. The homework was easy it was a small discussion board post and a 5 question quiz, but the essay that we had to do were awful, not explained well. The final included a take home portion, 10 short response, an essay, and was worth 200 points.
The professor was a very nice guy, however I was not a fan of the TA that I had. You had to attend because the lessons weren't online and the essays were hard and they were graded even harder. Only B I got that semester, so I was upset with the class and my TA.
Dr Young was a super nice professor. His lectures could feel a little bland, and you need to show up since he gives in class writing assignments. He offers really good feedback for writing assignements and he is always willing to help
Professor Young is really nice, but his exams are structured weirdly. The exams brought my grade down even though I did well on assignments, which was really discouraging. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he always assigns writing assignments. I actually don't even know what I got on his final because he didn't even put the grade in.
