Excellent Life Lessons! Made Computing Fun!
Totally kickass prof. He has a unique sense of humour that you can't help but love. He shows a great interest in the furthering of a students education. He provides some great life lessons, and is an all around great prof. If he taught any other classes, I would take them just to have him as a prof.
A good prof. He teaches well and manages to grab the students attention. His tests are fairly easy, since there aren't many application questions. He lacks when it comes to organization. My beef: he'll say one thing, but it won't hold true (eg when marks are to be posted in class, quiz date).
Dr. Sumrain's class is very interesting. Not because the material is interesting (sorry!), but because he makes it fun and entertaining.
Dr. Sumrain is the man! Anyone that can make CMPT 157 as interesting as he does should be given a massive bonus!
awesome teacher, the course is boring and dry as hell but he makes it interesting with his stories and jokes, extremly extremly personable and understanding and wont think twice about helping his students with questions or conflicts, highly recommended also tests are straightforward and he post not
he a pretty cool guy made computers seem plausible to a computer idiot like myself
Was a pleasure to have, most teachers really dont care about you. He did. Thanks!
Couldn't have asked for a better professor. Knew the material and made coming to class fun and interesting. Very enthusiastic, honest and fair. Truly my pleasure to take this class.
An excellent professor, made class interesting and showed a genuine interest with regard to students about more than just the classroom material. A fair professor who treated all students with respect and courtesy. Would like to cross paths again during my studies.
kinda overrated, granted the course itself is boring, but he's pretty long-winded himself with his pointless stories and such
Lots of usefull information, cool accent
sometimes funny, sometimes boring, sometimes thought-provoking. maybe he's more in his element teaching advanced classes; as an intro to computing though, no real expertise is required.
Great Guy, wonderful tacher but kinda unhelpful (especially when it comes to knowing where my lab final is, urgh!!!!)
Very friendly and knowledgeable. He is easy to approach.
He's the only prof that teaches 157, so yo have no choice here. Friendly guy. Midterm was kind of hard. Boring class. He spews a lot of useless info. You can get away with skipping a few classes.
Somewhat interesting and likes those who speak out in class, otherwise he'll go on about talking to a wall.
Very helpful with labs. Gives interesting lectures. Class attendence is not mandatory, but he will randomly hand out assignments and quizzes for marks to encourage attendence. Don't read all the chapters in the book because about 2 weeks before the final, he'll tell you only 6 chapters are actually on the final.
Speak out in class and he loves you. Cool accent. Hard final. Overall good class. Easy class to raise your GPA
Excellent prof, fun personality, interesting stories, love the accent. For a class with such boring material he brings some fun and interest to it which is always good.
very very nice guy good teacher. its a dry couse not his fault tries to make it interesting. good gpa booster. Good to take it helps so much for BUSN 201 and MGTS301
An excellent teacher, very helpful, awesome accent, and really knows the material. Highly recommended.
He's an awesome teacher, fun class. I would recommend his class to anyone.
The best cmp teacher ever, makes computer science excually interesting.
Sumrains lectures were pretty boring and didn't seem that important. The lab however was so helpful. Learning about microsoft office is something you wont really get in other classes and it is soo helpful to have!
He was a really nice guy and didn't mind giving extra help, but I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you can help it. The lectures are extremely painful and long. Attendance isn't required except for quiz days because he doesn't do notes on the material. His final is strictly on the textbook. Labs were useful
Lectures are useless, he teaches for the first week, after which he spends lecture time telling random stories or ranting about unrelated material. Only attend class for quizzes. Don't take him as your lab TA, he never posts marks. Tests from textbook, despite what he says. Really nice guy, very easy, kinda boring though, easy A.
Sumrain was a decent teacher but the course itself was too dry and he really needs to get quizzes/dates together. Also, leaving to Saudi Arabia halfway through the year doesn't help either. Overall an average professor who's always willing to help.
He taught a class about education technology. Class was very boring but he tried to make it interesting. All tests and exams were straight out of the textbook. He took any comments or questions very seriously but got stuck teaching an outdated class. He loved it whenever a kid made a joke about him. Great teacher, boring material.
Great prof. He cares very deeply about his students doing well and is interesting to listen to. He is very handy and actually listens to any concerns he is given. His class is at 8AM and I actually want to get up to go, he is also very, very fair in his marking (on the side of easy) would take any class with him again in a heart beat.
He really does care about his students. There is lots of class discussion, and opportunities to get involved like doing presentations for extra marks. He is very understanding about late assignments and sometimes flexible about due dates. Very reasonable.
He is very passionate about this course and all the students succeeding. I had this class at 8 and it was a struggle to get up and go because it was very boring and it felt like we didn't cover a whole lot in the hour so occasionally I wouldn't go. It was VERY easy to get good marks and he gave out practice quizzes for the exams which were useful.
Ibrahim tries his best to make the course exciting and interesting, his tests are very fair. He posts most of his in class notes online. His tests based off both the textbook and the notes. He is EXTREMELY willing to help you out if you are struggling. Most caring teacher I have ever had :)
He is one of the most caring professors, and I recommend him to anyone who is going into EDPY. He made class so interesting, and he is full of wisdom and really neat stories. Very awesome prof!
Amazing Prof. He knows the art of EDPY inside and out and practices the art of teaching within his classroom. He ensures the information is meaningful, provides an environment conducive to discourse and is always able to see and present the value of teaching (and existence). I have such admiration for this professor and highly recommend the class.
Professor Sumrain is wonderful, and I can't imagine anyone not enjoying his class. He knew my name by the end of the first day, and a year after taking his class he still smiles and waves at me when I see him in the hallway.
He is honestly one of the nicest most genuine men i've ever met. I felt like what made me do well in his class is that i felt guilty when i missed class or didnt complete assignments because he is so nice. He's almost like a father figure.
I have had this professor for two different classes now: EDIT 202 & EDPY 200. He is extremely student centered. I switched my entire schedule around just to be sure I had him for this semester. I recommend his classes to anyone. He makes an extremely boring class interesting and VERY easy!
Best prof ive had at macewan, awesome guy
Great prof. Makes class very interesting. Makes terrible exams. Gives you many chapters the exam will be on but does not clarify what the key points of the text will be on the exam. Also his power points dont have any useful info for exams. Overall I felt lost not knowing what to study. And he has not practice questions or anything for exams.
READ THE TEXTBOOK! If you do that, the course is a breeze. Sumrain is a very nice guy, even if the course content in the lesson isn't reflected in the exam. He has a great sense of humour, and is very nice if you talk to him during office hours.
Great teacher, Great guy. One of the best profs I've ever had!! Very caring and engaging. He legitimately wants the best for you.
Ibrahim is by far the most caring, engaging and sweet professor I ever had, definitely recommend his class
excellent prof, very caring guy, nicest guy ever met.
He's a nice guy, but not a very good prof. If you read the assigned textbook, you don't need to attend his classes because he basically just tells you what was in each chapter. Talks all class, usually about things that aren't related to the course. Isn't super helpful outside of class time
He's a nice guy, but he spends too much class time telling stories that are only moderately related to Psychology. We would rarely finish the chapters and he would just tell is to read the rest at home. Would not recommend.
Dr. Sumrain is an amazing prof! He is funny and tells lots of stories which are both interesting but sometimes actually have to do with the course material. He is very intelligent and very helpful if you are struggling. He wants everyone to pass and it shows. Highly Recommend!
He is a really nice guy and tries to give students second chances when he can. Attendance is not mandatory because all his tests are based on the textbook. He also encourages group work.
This was a great class and he is really nice and will try to help as much as he can. his knowledge on the subject was limited but he had help from another professor most of the time. most of his lectures were hard to understand but he made a point of posting materials and giving you every learning aid he could!
He's so hard to understand, and he rants forever about pointless stuff. You really need to read the textbook or you won't understand a thing. (Of course, I didn't read the textbook until I was studying for the exams) DO THE EXTRA CREDIT PROJECT! It's so easy!
He gives great lectures and makes it fun to come to class
He talks way to much about things that aren't even related to psychology. way to many stories. Its very hard to follow him because he doesn't post his lectures till the day hes done which makes it hard to take notes about what hes talking about. I would not take his class again and if you have other options look into them!!
It is really easy to get a good grade because he offers a lot of opportunities for extra credit and his tests are really straight forward. His lectures can get kinda dry but the mark you get in the end makes it worth it.
Classes are boring but he takes attendance .... I just read the book instead of paying attention in class it was too boring ( and I actually like psychology) .. He's such a good person tho and really enthusiastic
Make sure you attend his classes,he does attendance. He increases your final grade if your attendance is good. So make sure you attend. He really cares for his students and is very understanding.
I'm not sure how someone with a PhD in computing science is qualified to teach psychology, but he was very enthusiastic about the material. However, he consistently had grammatical errors in his notes and tests. Now, this may seem picky, but I often felt exam questions were ambiguous, leaving me to guess what he was actually asking.
I took this class when it was changed to EDUC 210 for the first time. Interesting lectures, cares about his students, he makes the course easy!
Really nice guy but lectures can be dry, though this is more do to the course itself. Exams are reasonable and reflect information taught in class and of the lecture notes.
Professor Sumrain is a good guy, very kind and cares deeply about his students; However, he is hard to understand, his lectures are long and uninteresting and his tests... well he takes them directly from online sources instead of basing them off the textbook material as he claims they are and answers that are correct tend to be marked wrong.
Professor Sumrain is a great guy, very kind and cares deeply about his students; However, he is hard to understand, his lectures are long and uninteresting and his tests... well he takes them directly from online sources instead of basing them off the textbook material as he claims they are and answers that are correct tend to be marked wrong.
His lectures were extremely long and dry and it was hard to tell what was relevant from the slides. He doesn't upload them anyway so if you miss class just read the textbook and you will be fine. The quizzes and tests have a lot of errors in them but were easy marks, same with the lab. I did not study too hard for the final and got an A-.
Professor Sumrain is a great professor. He gives 5% of your mark for attending two specified classes (each worth 2.5%) and participating in the activity. His tests are straight from the textbook, so the textbook is mandatory.
Dr. Sumrain was an absolute sweetheart. I looked forward to attending all of my classes and he made the classes fly by and really quite enjoyable. I will say though, I went into the midterm attempting to kill it and had quite the reality check. The majority of the multiple choice on his exams are application questions and can be tough.
Overall really nice prof. His lectures are extremely long and he has about 1000 words per slide on a PowerPoint of 90 slides (per chapter).. so get ready to read and spend hours on hours of studying. Reads right from PowerPoint slides. Tests were fairly easy.
Power point slides go on forever. You're better off just reading the textbook and reviewing the notes you take from class (if you take them). He spends about 5 minutes of every class telling the students not to write the whole presentation in your notes. He talks a lot and then shows the slide or skips it. It didn't suit my learning style. Oh well.
Certainly very helpful and truly cares for students. However his online quizzes and midterms are taken from an existing testbank which has MANY ambiguous questions. I had to see him repeatedly to argue for marks. Overall a very good professor, however his tests are a bit unfair due to the nature of the testbank used.
He spends about a quarter of the class talking about random things that has nothing to do with the course. Then he goes over class time. Slides are long and filled with grammatical errors. Says the exams are based on lecture notes which is a lie. Questions aren't clear and are taken from elsewhere. Get ready to read the textbook to teach yourself.
I think he is a great guy. However, as a teacher he wasn't a good fit for me. His powerpoints were long & disorganized. The online quizzes had many vague and ambiguous questions, many were taken from online sources. Has two classes where attendance matters, you get 2.5% per class. My advice would be to type your notes, he flies through the notes.
He is SO all over the place, his lectures are scattered, his assignment instructions are vague and confusing. He doesn't give out a clear rubric. Half way through the course he decided to start taking attendance, and if you didn't show up he would drop you from the group presentation and you lose the 15%.
Nice and provides good feedback.
Ibrahim is very passionate and encourages the same from his students. You wont actually learn much from class because that time is taken up mostly by presentations but attendance was mandatory for our class. For the remaining parts of class, he tends to lecture us on things that are less relevant but it's always interesting and funny.
You need to read the textbook and all his lecture notes for the exams. He adds on so many bonus marks for the online quizzes and in-class discussions. If you find a question on the quizzes or exams that doesn't make sense, he will take it off.
One of the worst profs I have had. 30% of the class failed the course entirely. The exam questions are nothing like the lectures or textbook (read both). As said by others, his questions are pulled from online banks. He reads slides every class (something you could do yourself) but his slides are confusing and poorly organized.
I'm surprised to see so many negative reviews for this guy. I thought he was great, very nice and always happy. If you read his notes AND the textbook, the tests will be extremely easy. The final was a breeze and brought my mark up 2 letter grades. For a class like this, it's expected that material will be from the textbook as well, so read it.
He is the best of the best!! This prof has inspired me with his kindness and his ability to give everyone a chance to succeed!
Sumrain has inspired me in so many ways. He is an extremely positive and cheerful guy, and very understanding. He is also super passionate as a prof, and always made class very interesting. The class itself was very easy going and not stressful. He is very wise man and who I aspire to be. I never missed my 8am class with him.
Dr. Sumrain as a person is a great guy. Very positive and funny. However with him teaching a Technology in education class, he was not prepared well enough due to the fact that he had issues with his technology every class. We on average have 20 minutes of actual class time due to poor time management.
Dr. Sumrain is an extremely passionate man. You can tell he cares about education and inspires his students. He lectures on and on and you can tell students lose interest quickly. We had over 60 students in class and 20 would show up. Online quizzes are easy and final straight from the textbook. 5% participation (you can only miss 3 classes)
While Dr. Sumrain is very kind and genuine, his lectures are absolutely pointless. The entire semester is his 7for7 presentation, which make you lose all your motivation to show up to class (especially at 9 am). He then spends 10-15 minutes ranting about education - topics that don't necessarily have anything to do with what shows up on the final.
Dr. Sumrain is very concerned about his students learning; however, his exams are not fair. There are always a number of questions that were not covered in class. Even if you know all the content, his multiple choice questions require a high level of application and discretion. Other psych classes i have taken were more cut and dry facts.
He's a really entertaining guy, sometimes a little bit hard to understand but always try's to keep everyone in class engaged and interacting. Don't miss lectures since the he literally gives you some mid term short answer questions in class! Overall a really kind man and would definitely recommend!
If you take a difficult class taught by a strict teacher, you can appreciate his positivity. He gives opportunities to improve your grade. Focus on studying the textbook when it comes to the online quizzes; a lot of questions are direct quotes. He doesn't post his notes, so attendance is useful. Tests are a combination of textbook and class notes.
Awesome guy. Very inspirational and has one of the best attitudes towards life I have ever seen. Did not particularly enjoy his semi-constant preaching about phones ruining us young people and weed warping our brains HOWEVER he really has a passion for the happiness of others and that's admirable. His notes are a bit scrambled and mostly from book.
He is a very good man and love his enthusiam. Did not like that he would lecture to us about not lecturing. Told us to use different techniques as teachers that arent lecturing yet all he did was lecture. Also the 7for7 presentations would take up half of our block. Overall boring course.
Nice dude, and really funny, but not a good teacher. Rambled on about his life, and stuff that had nothing to do with his class. Not organized or time efficient at all. I did not know what I was supposed to study for the final because we did not do anything. If you like structure in a class, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES!
Ibrahim is a super kind, funny and caring prof. The course was overall rather boring because he mostly lectured. The 7 for 7 presentations also took up atleast half the class each day which was a bit annoying. He was a decent prof overall.
Sumrain is a great teacher! He's very intelligent and funny! He really wants his students to succeed. He gives optional bonus assignments to boost up your grade! He doesn't post his notes online though so you have to come to class. He also takes questions from the textbook for exams, so you'll have to do a little reading. Tests are easy though!
Dr. Sumrain has a very positive and unique outlook on life and I loved the fact that he shared his view with us. I always came out of his class feeling like I could conquer the wolrd. His tests are easy and definitely fair. Like any other class, studying and attendance is required to get a good grade.
Ibrahim is a really good speaker, his lectures are inspirational and always have you paying attention to what he is saying. If you show up to class, read the textbook this is an easy A course. Would easily take again
Nice guy and enthusiastic about the program, but probably one of the worst profs I've ever had. Super disorganized and if a prof is going to teach Educational technology, they should probably be able to use technology...
Awful prof. He would test on things that were specifically textbook and were not in the main bulk of text, rather the small blurbs on the side. He also would talk about how awful technology is, yet has his degree in computer science. To top it off, he would go to great lengths to tell us how to write power points down in the most condescending way.
This professor is not able to use modern technology, let alone to teach others to use it. A lot of time wasting in the class on conversations not connected with the topic.
I really enjoyed hearing his life story and perspective. He is a lot more engaging than the average professor.
Kind guy but not the greatest teacher. Lectures on about stories from his life that are irrelevant to the topic and the 7 for 7 presentations wasted half the class time.
This is the second class I've taken with Dr. Sumrain and I would take more classes with him if I could. He is a very kind man and wants to see his students succeed. The tests are all very easy and he gives some things for extra credit.
Very passionate, tells stories from experience to emphasize points. Largely an anecdotal professor. His teacher style is very student centered. He asked our class what exam format we wanted, even letting people individually choose the format they're most comfortable with.
Dr. Sumrain was one of the sweetest profs I have ever had, many complained about his story-telling but I thought it made him more interesting, and just showed how caring he is! His lectures are dry, but the class is easy to pass, and Dr. Sumrain wants to help in anyway possible for his students to do well! Lectures are dry,but overall an easy class
I really like and respect Dr. Sumrain, as a person. He is very kind, genuine, and a very funny person (w/ great stories). His lectures, however, were pointless. For the entire semester, the first 25-30mins of class were spent on student presentations. All the lecture notes were online so you would learn more spending an hour at home reading them.
I had a great time in this class, there was a reading assignment due each week but he understood students had other classes and even pushed back some deadlines so we were able to do the assignments to the best of our abilities. Final was on lecture notes completely, if you missed classes you would not pass the final.
I had Ibrahim as a prof for 311 and he was pretty good and easy to get a hold of outside of class. Though we didn't have too many in-class lectures due to covid, I found his lectures engaging. Ibrahim is retired so he doesn't teach too often but if you're ever in his class during a term where he is teaching, I'd recommend actually going to class.
He's a fantastic teacher. Very dedicated to his field and loves giving his lectures. The textbook is mandatory as all the course content comes from there with weekly quizzes and written responses based on the chapters. Uses lecture time to enhance the textbook content and extra points not covered. I recommend if you're looking for an optional.
