don't take if you are looking for an easy class. lots of math! problems on every test. introduction to astronomy is very misleading. he thinks you're going to be an astronomer and teaches like it. take someone else.
no offense, he's japanese, so i couldn't understand a word he said. i had to teach myself. take quizzes online every week. doesn't teach well enough
This class was so boring I wanted to shoot myself. I mean there was some funny moments but other than thatif you have to take this class just teach yourself and do the quizzes and read the book and dont even come to lecture cause its not worth it.
Very difficult to understand and very boring!! If you're not REALLY into Astronomy, it's not worth it.
I couldn't understand a word he was saying. That would have been ok if it was an easier class, but he is very demanding. I had to drop the class because there was no way I would be able to pass when I had no idea what half of the lecture was about.
The class and tests were so easy, I did not have to turn in the planetarium paper and still made an A. Class was very interesting, too.
do NOT ever take him for general physics I. Explains material like you have already had it before, doesn't explain anything and on top of that you CAN NOT understand a word he says. I WARN YOU DON'T EVER TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!
Horrible teacher, very smart, but don't ever take him.
I thought Dr. Konno was a great professor. I had him for physics 1 lab. He was very helpful when I asked him questions and even though you wouldn't guess it he has a very good sense of humor if you get to know him.
Extremely intelligent man, but he cannot teach and not everyone is in love w/ physics.
The worst teacher ever. He does not explain the concepts clearly, very disorganized, and very scatter-brain He does not go over the homework, even though students ask him for help. This guy doesn't care about any student's learning at all! Stay far away!
I do not understand how UTSA allowed him to become a senior lecturer, or maybe they were desperate.
really confusing, hard to understand. great guy, but dont take this class if you arent good in math/physics already. took his astronomy course in the same semester and it was hard!
I was excited when i started this semester i was looking forwatd to astronomy especially. but after a few weeks of going i lost interest. he is hard to understand and his notes were not in the order of the book. i am retaking this class but with a different teacher. good class difficult teacher.
but how are his test, format wise and any extra-credit offered?
Teacher is hard to understand, a lot of ppl never showed up. Study the book and online quizzes a lot in order to make a good grade. The class is very difficult --- I needed several hours of study time to get an A in this class. Avoid it if you can!
Sure his lectures are a little boring and he has an accent, but his tests are straight from the book and he doesn't take role. At the end of the semester he added like 3 points to everyone's semester grade.
Very hard to understand, boring lectures. If SI sessions are available, I'd advise going to them. Homework is somewhat difficult. Going to online astronomy website was VERY HELPFUL, most times more helpful than going to lectures.
He tries to confuse me.
Not very clear in lecture. Don't bother going to class. Just read the book to make an easy A. Half the questions on the tests are WORD FOR WORD from online quizzes, so make sure to take them. Tests are easy if you read the book. Gives homework that is a little tough sometimes, but overall easy class
I thought he was hilarious and he's pretty slack and easy going. I don't think I'd want him for a lecture but he's pretty good for the lab portion of the class.
Took his class thinking it was going to be alright..I wish I had looked at this site first. He is very boring, and very hard to understand. Like some of the other reviews have stated you can do well on the tests just by taking the online quizzes that come with the textbook required for the cource.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! All the exams' class averages have been below 60. I failed 2 out of 3 exams! He's ridiculous! >_<!!
Ok, this class is way hard, it goes into detail about everything you really don't want to know if you're disinterested. I don't recommend this class to anyone who wants a blow off class. If you are really worried about your grade, you can ask him and he will make you happy.
he's really boring, don't worry about going to class cuz test are over the online quizzes, but careful cuz homework is hard and this subject is ultimately boring with a boring teacher teaching it. I am barely passing and I do the quizzes don't take it if you don't have too or if your looking for a A
One of the reasons people do so bad in this class is because NOBODY GOES TO HIS CLASS. Only a quarter of the auditorium is filled on a GOOD day. He can be boring and hard to understand sometimes, but his tests aren't really difficult. They just cover a lot of material. Online textbook really helps!
Very hard teacher. Dont take this class if you are concerned about your gpa. He is not willing to work with you and gives no extra credit. His test averages are all below 60 and he does not give a curve. I have a 3.8 and i amd failing this class. He does not help with test content or give reviews.
This professor was very unclear on material that was important. I didn't learn a single thing in this class
heavy accent. most people think the class is hard because they don't attend. key to getting a b or a is to go to class!!!! know the formulas. make sure you remember basic physics and algebra. read the textbook. gives you an opportunity to do better than just the tests you have 20pts of credit of tutorials. they help alot. not bad class at al
See thats the problem with UTSA...they dont understand how to use the talent properly. Physics is his thing (not AST).He gives make up exams, great reviews, explains the material well, is quite concerned about progress. I am surprised he hasnt taught physics lecture before. He should do it more often. I think he enjoys it more.
I had him for physics 2 lecture and lab as well as Astronomy. I loved his class. His office is always open if you have questions, he answers emails the same day. The finals were not comprehensive so that was GREAT! Gave extra credit pts. for attendance. A 62 was a C. So, if you dont pass his classes its kinda your own fault (in my opinion)!
He is good for people who don't know much about physics. If actually understand physics you will find out that most of the time he doesn't know what he is doing. But since he doesn't know what he's doing, he makes things easier for the studnets...
Just go to lab and take the quizes. He is actually a very good teacher and will help you if you have any questions
Enthusiastic, hilarious, fun teaching style
He's mediocre. It's hard to understand him, both from his thick accent and somewhat unclear lectures, however, he won't pull any tricks - what he goes over in class and what homework he assigns is what is on exams, and exams are pretty easy. You will learn about maganet fieodes in addition to pawaleow lines.
Has a good sense of humor for people being silly in class. He uses the iClicker randomly in class to see how many people understand what he's talking about, and if not enough people do he'll reiterate it. He's a little hard to understand when it comes to words with an L. Tests are EASY IF YOU DID THE HOMEWORK
I had him for egr phys 2. He gives random quizzes, so you have to go to class and you have to do the homework.
Keeps students involved in subject
He's a great teacher, and he doesn't try to trick students on his exams. If you do the homework and understand it, you will do well on tests. He also has really good reviews.
This was a Summer class. Prof went way to fast which made it even more difficult. Prof gives one formula, the book has another and the SI offers another method. Very confusing!! Don't miss a class and ask questions when you have too! Still a good Prof and is willing to help.
all in all an average teacher, not the best, not the worst, if i had to give a scale itd be just under average.
Accent is hard to understand at first, but I got used to it. He is funny so that keeps class halfway interesting. I'm not sure if I had a hard time because of the subject or because of the teacher, but I probably wouldn't take this professor again. Took during 5-week summer term--wouldn't recommend it unless youu know basic physics already.
Great summer class. I learned a lot. You have to do all homework online, but you can get a B easily without buying the book. Makes class interesting and obviously loves the subject. We even went star gazing on the roof!
He was great. I took him for a summer class and he really cares about his students and wants you to well.
This guy is great! funny too. no tricks just study his notes you'll do fine.
Hmmm, don't know why Dr. Konno has gotten such a low rating. I thought he was pretty good. He does have an accent, but it's not that bad. I understood him just fine. Look, I HATE physics and got an A. I have Dr. Konno to thank for that. He won't trick you on the exams. All you have to do is study your notes and re-work the examples.
His office hours are useless especially if you're female. I had a few friends complain he really has a hard time speaking with ladies. I do not recommend him as a Physics professor. Do yourself a favor and find someone else.
He was a really good teacher, yes he has an accent but you get used to get if you go to class. his lectures are really helpful and he posts them all online<which can be hard to rd if you skip class cuz his hand writing is horrible. he is a really good instructor and if you go to class and pay attention you shuld get an A
Cheater beware or even if you look like you might be cheating he makes a huge production out of it. I felt sorry for the guy who went to the restroom before the quiz. He is a cold scientist type if you got personal issues dont make the mistake of trying to get any sympathy from this guy. Ok teacher can't read notes, and confusing lectures.
This prof is a total waste product and should be fired. He tests on subjects that he does not cover and is no help at office hours. Stay away..you have been warned.
He is a great teacher, I wish he gave us some extra points for exams or curve the final grades by 5 points. :(
Konno is a great teacher to take if you want to learn physics, not just pass it with an easy A. He gives out homework that is due but his tests are almost exactly what is on the homeworks problems or in his lecture notes. He has iClicker quizzes, but those are so easy it's like giving away free points. Final is not comprehensive. And he's funny :)
I liked how he posted the notes online, but knowing all of the equations was the hard part. He never let us use an equation sheet and there were a lot of equations to know about each concept
Not an easy A for sure, you will learn but you have to work hard. Homework and quizzes are important for your grade. Tests are very challenging. Average fora each test in class was around 68-72% but you can do better if you dedicate the time and effort. Gives useless curves
These review must be from the same idiots in my class who didnt study and expected an easy A. Dr. Konno is actually a very good teacher, and his accent is not bad. He works out alot of examples, and his test ? are just like his examples from class. the ppl who got below a B were either really stupid or never studied.
Dr.Konno was a very good physics professor. I HATE physics(never took it in high school), and I got an A in his class. His exam questions are exactly like the ones he does in class. No formula sheet, which in my opinion forced you to learn the concepts and the meaning behind the formulas. Id take him again for sure
He makes the topics we learn very interesting and he condenses the material into understandable examples. I really enjoy that class and his quizzes allows us to test ourselves and learn the topics during class time. He is also pretty quirky and funny which makes class enjoyable and fun!
Professor Konno is very clear about his topics and uses different methods to keep you up to date. i clicker quizzes really help. He is also willing to adjust to the class if he sees they are struggling. Hard A but VERY good professor.
took Dr. Konno for Astronomy. He goes the speed of the class but seems to stay on track. Attendance is not mandatory but he does give a quiz after every class. The homework took time to complete but easy. Do the homework and you will do fine on the exams. If you do not do good in the class it is because you are lazy.
I just completed the AST 1013 course with Dr. Konno, if you put forth the effort it is an easy A, if you just attend class, pay attention easy B, I'm sure you get the just of it. Dr. Konno was always willing to help you if you needed it, and a lot of people needed it, he even helped the lazy ones. Thanks Dr. Konno, good class!
Protip: Write down everything from his notes. His examples make the material easier to understand and are fairly easy to learn, and if you study and master his notes you should have no problem on his exams. His examples and exams questions are easier than the textbook questions. He has a good sense of humor too.
Physics is so easy he teaches it to his cat! Konno is very hilarious, though not everyone may get his humor. He is very clear on what he wants you to know for his exams. Attend class and not only will you be there for each quiz, but the examples he gives are exactly what will be on the tests. Be sure to do the homework as well. Loved this class!
My impression is that Konno does not enjoy teaching anymore. He assigned so much homework (9+ hours a week, besides reading and class time) that I had to forgo a lot of the reading. He knows his stuff but seems to be unable to empathize with those who do not find physics concepts very intuitive. I felt like an annoyance anytime i visited his office
Good professor, had a lot of fun in his class. Be interested in his class and he will make it interesting, he's a funny and very likeable guy and will answer questions for you if you have them. DON'T cheat in his class or he will go on a witch hunt for you. Be engaged and make the class more fun and you will enjoy it but it'll still be difficult.
Although He is a good teacher, his test is like IMPOSSIBLY HARD. I am not joking. I had to struggle in his class to get a B. Quizzes are even worse. Thank god I survived in his class
I took this class in a 5 week summer session so we went through the material very fast. Class is not especially hard but you have to come to class (daily quiz) and pay attention. Exams are difficult, but professor is very aware of class average and will make adjustments as needed. We even got a ten point curve on one exam. Great Professor overall!
Hilarious teacher. Most of the exam questions come straight from the notes. Easy A if you take notes.
He gave a huge amount of homework, and lectures were often useless. He put a lot of trick questions on the tests, and in his reviews he often gave wrong info about what material would be covered. Several chapters of difficult information was covered in just a few days at the end of semester, and this information made up nearly half the final exam.
IMPOSSIBLY HARD TESTS, half the class failed, he "curves" his test by giving a quiz. Not easily approachable. His notes kind of reflect his tests, but he likes to trick you. When I tried to approach him, he just stands there and says "OK". NOT A RECOMMENDED TEACHER
He is pretty tough but you will just need to put in a little more work. my first test grade was a 37, 2nd: 70 and 3rd: 95. he takes best 10 out of 10+ clicker quizzes. and the web assign has been pretty do-able. physics isn't easy in general and he teaches it alright, you need to go over all the examples after class, i will probably end up with a B
Class went by very fast. Almost daily quizes. Super easy if you actually read the book though. I enjoyed it because of the topics we were learning about. Gave some extra credit for stargazing and sunspotting. Overall, great class and good teacher.
Good teacher. The exams were fair. Honestly his exams are probably the most forgiving of the other profs'. I got an A and I only studied the examples in class & the quizzes. Notes posted online. Quizzes are a bit annoying because you have to attend class to get credit for them. Don't bother buying the book.
worst teacher ever. not clear + really hard tests. I don't recommend him.
Overall good professor. All his exams cover the examples he does during lectures while explaining them in great detail, so if you understand how to do the examples, the exams are pretty easy. Homework and quizzes can be annoying, usually harder than tests. If you fail the class you're stupid; all you have to do is memorize examples.
He was a little hard to understand but as long as you go to class and make sure to do the homework, you'll be fine. The homework is a pain though. There is no pattern as to when it is due and is easy to miss. You can do it a few days late though.
Dr. Konno is a very good professor that works very hard--as long as you actually apply yourself, you can pass his class. Eng. Physics 2 is tough, but he gives you all of the tools that you need, it's up to you to learn how to use them.
He is pretty laid back, but the class is no breeze. If you understand the material presented in the lectures and know how to do the problems that are done in class and online then the tests are pretty easy.
Like some other students have mentions, he has a problem talking one on one with female students in his office hours. Really awkward. He is weird so if you are a fairly attractive female sit in the back and even that might not help so good luck.
Konno is a very rude professor and also reported my friend for cheating even though he had the same test averages from the beginning claiming that his test solutions are not right and even though he did all his problems and showed his work. Avoid this professor and he is so rude.
Horrible Professor!! Infested with typos on his test and always moody when you ask him questions or want to work homework problems. Anytime your late he will always give you looks and start harrasing you.
This a very straight-forward class. Dr. Konno goes into great detail in class, so I highly recommend going (in addition to getting clicker quiz points). All you need to do is study the examples given in class and you will do well on his exams. Great class over-all.
The class is super easy. Do the homework on mastering astronomy and the study the review you ll get an A in the class. Gives a lot of extra credit on the homework and on the clicker quizzes.
Professor Konno is Horrible and my friends do not listen I tell them not to take him but they still do. Yeah physics II many people take it two to three times to pass but the professor will make where you can fail it three times if you continue to have him. Horrible tests and horrible grades. So rude too and avoid him
Very dry and boring lectures, attendance isn't mandatory to pass, although there are in class iclicker quizzes. You will learn most of the information you need through online homework. Test bank answers word for word on his tests. Power points online, study those and do your homework and you will make an easy A.
My physics 1 professor was awful at teaching and it was very obvious that she was only interested in research and I rather take her again. He only had 2 exams and they extremly hard he told us our class was the worst class he ever taught as our class exam average was 35 he even gave us a retest and no one did better on the retest.
He does do pop quizzes with I-clickers, so come to class often. He puts his notes online, but if you really want to know whats going on, go to class. Make sure you get all the examples he puts on his notes because those are your free-response questions on your test. His lectures are boring but they are worth going if you want to pass.
Super easy course. Honestly didnt learn much but basically an easy A
Run for your life! Except you are a really smart kid and you really dont have any other serious class you're taking. His tests are always difficult. They are mostly from previous exams tho which you have to find yourself. His TA graded our exams and he graded it again saying the TA gave too many free points. DONT TAKE HIM!
Dr. Konno is a excellent instructor who can teach to all levels, but will still offer a challenge to the more advanced students. He will give you very clear physics picture, and exactly how to approach the problem. His tests are very fair and are largely similar to the review and examples solved in class. He is very fair, go to office hours!
I love astronomy but I would have loved the course a lot more if the professor was more enthusiastic. The class was really boring so make sure to tape your eyelids open. You'll learn a lot about space though. STUDY.
This professor is pretty hard. He doesn't do any extra credit or curving. His test are half multiple choice half free response. He grades the free response portion super strict! You for sure have to go to class, he gives examples of what the test will look like and a lot of the multiple choice come from his iclicker pop quizzes.
Konno is quiet and has a thick accent. Will call on you in class, and won't take "I'm not sure" as an answer. Tests are unlike homework, does not make reviews. His equation sheets for test are very unclear. Pages of notes everyday. Class was extremely difficult, and he doesn't care much for the students. No leaving early, and Iclickers everyday.
Prof Konno is among the most reasonable at UTSA. His lectures are given at a good pace allowing time for discussion and questions. Class notes are posted on bb soon after lecture. The tests/quizzes(not pop) are within your ability if you read and finish your problem sets. You will earn your grade. Plenty of office hours. Incredibly hilarious.
dont be a fool because he will put you on blast in front of class. take the course serious. focus on hw early, go to office hours, do examples that he suggest. is possible to earn an A but you need to put in the work
Gotta be the worst professor at UTSA. Please avoid this professor for University Physics. Has the worst attitude ever. Has no mercy for the student and doesn't care about the student's performance. Will embarrass you if you do not know the answer to the question. His tests are near impossible without the old versions. AVOID I'm probably gonna fail.
Physics all together has never been really clear to me. The webassign homework is so hard, and it doesn't go with the lectures. There's a 2-3 question iclicker quiz everyday, or attendance points. He goes pretty fast, the grade is definitely not handed to you and studying on your own is essential to pass. I wouldn't recommend taking him.
The class isnt easy but physics isnt easy. The tests are like his notes and the review. So if you look through those youll do just fine. Overall he is a good professor and tries to help you pass.
konno is not that great at teaching, all he does is example problems without explaining how to do them or what they are about so lecture is super confusing. the book was a waste of money. even though the examples are confusing, if you study them before the tests youll do fine. he tells you the free response problems in class
If you don't mind studying/teaching yourself the material then take him. He's a fine professor but honestly, the class on its own is difficult. He puts the work he is required to do and nothing more. About 10 multiple choice questions and 5 open-ended questions, daily quizzes. Sounds much worse than it is, if you're responsible you'll be fine.
Great guy, Terrible Professor. I was one of the few who didnt take physics in high school, so I was behind to begin the course, but then several times he skipped over some information because he found it trivial or thought we should know it. He is soft spoken and hard to understand, and does no explaining, he leaves it at face level.
Was not very much help outside of class and made exams extremely difficult for no reason.
The tests are based directly on the in class problems and reviews. The textbook is easy to understand and helpful if you don't understand. There are daily quizzes that are based on the material learned the previous day, but you can work with others so they are pretty easy. Just study the in class notes and you'll do fine.
Konno is a solid physics professor but you should expect to read the textbook often and before lectures. If you don't it is very easy to fall behind. I had him for Physics II (Cal based) and he was average. He does iClicker questions every class as an attendance/grade. 3 Midterms(15% each), 1 Final(20%), and iClickerQuizzes(10%).
Good person but horrible lecturer. He explains the how, but not the why. PhysII is hard as it is, and he's not good at teaching. The test are the majority of your grade, and they're easy to fail. The test review is 20 percent of what actually on his tests. Homework is on masteringphysics which is useless, and expensive. A real TEACHYOURSELF CLASS.
Dr. Konno is a very difficult professor to have. His teaching method is, chug a problem during lecture, and make the students feel stupid for asking questions. He fails to teach you the basics and just assumes you have a PHD in physics. I would strongly recommend not taking him.
Dr. Konno is a very intelligent and passionate individual about physics. He does review a lot of examples and they often do appear on the exams. It can be easy to fall behind because he teaches very quickly and explains things at a level that he understands but can be hard to understand if you have not read the chapter before the lecture.
I am a physics major and Konno is so far the worst professor in our department. For Modern, half of each Exam are questions not covered in class nor assigned HW. You wont know your grade until finals week. Quiz questions are unclear and I had to consult the chair multiple times. He does not explain a topics, like none at all. Avoid him at all costs
Classical Mechanics with Konno was alright but he still sucks. After taking this course I am able to do specific problems but am unable to apply anything I learned to systems that differ from the narrow scope covered. Exams worth 15%. Quizzes 10%. Homework 10%. Final 25%. Classical is hard in general so Konno is an alright choice. Exams are fair.
Requires weekly attendance but the posted asynchronous lectures teach more than the ones that require attendance. Doesn't do a good job explaining concepts either. Sometimes says some insensitive/rude things (one time asked if "COVID affected our brains"), but sometimes reasonable. He is also pretty lenient on due dates for assignments.
You will learn everything yourself if you take his class. His lectures seem like he's just winging it and he finds random things offline to just read for an hour and not teach. Rude as well.
QM1 with Dr. Konno is below average. Lectures are disorganized and just a reiteration of his mathematical notes from years prior. Exams are rarely finished in allotted time. Grading is as follows; 10% attendance, 30% per exam (3 total exams - no final). Textbook: Quantum Mechanics, David H. McIntyre, Pearson Publishing. ISBN-13: 978-0-321-76579-6
Just plain out terrible. Safe yourself while you still can.
The course itself is not challenging, but I have taken another professor that makes Physics 2 easier to understand and learn. Dr. Konno is a nice professor willing to help you during his office hours. If you take Physics 2, make sure you are not taking other difficult courses because it may be challenging to balance.
Worst teacher ever, he is rude and disrespectful to all of his students.
I would've liked to give Konno a better rating however I don't think I've every had to endure someone as horrible as him. On one of my homework assignments, I failed only to see that he graded like we were in kindergarten.
I didn't have much of a problem with Konno until I got into an accident and had to miss some of his lectures, I asked if I would be able to attend online or if I could get an email involving all of the things we would be doing. To this he told me that he shouldn't be making his life harder for me to be able to understand materials I should know.
Objectively, I've benefitted from the way this course was taught. I've been told consistently that graduate school requires a student is able to understand the material before taking a lecture. Understanding material isn't simply copying a solution that is in a video or a previous lecture. Those who go above and beyond are rewarded. I value this.
Professor Konno is the worst professor ever. He lost part of our final and made us redo it after the term was over. He was constantly making major mistakes like not posting rubrics, misleading us on how things would be graded, incorrectly grading/ imputing scores wrong, etc. I rarely move around my schedule to avoid a professor but you should.
The first few lectures, I hated this guy. After that, he opened up and started smiling a little more. Make sure to write everything down - almost every example that you see in class will be on an exam. He makes it pretty obvious what the free response problems on the next exam will cover. As long as you have a pen and paper, you can pass this class
The man tells you what is going to be on the test while he is doing his lectures. The homework is only 1 assignment a week. If you pay attention, take good notes and engage you will do fine. My only complaint is that I felt like a burden at his office hours.
This guy has very uninspiring lectures. He mumbles the material, which is sometimes pre-written. Between that, trying to read his handwriting, and trying to hear him, it was hard to grasp concepts. He gave out 20 in class quizzes, so attendance isn't mandatory if you don't mind zeros on those. A lot of people in the class dropped, and are retaking.
Didn't understand him 50% of the time, homeworks are relatively easy, test reviews prepare you well for exams, lectures are alright. Wouldn't recommend, but if necessary, be prepared to learn a good bit by yourself.
He's very quiet and something that UTSA decided to do this year is put him in a even bigger lecture hall, his handwriting is bad, so its hard to understand or follow him given both. This is my second time taking this class since he the only professor to do this class, if you can avoid him I would, otherwise be prepared to learn physics on your own.
Physics 2 was the worst class ever. The professor focuses on memorization rather than concepts. His notes are unreadable, and recorded lectures are unhelpful. The workload is overwhelming with long assignments, daily attendance, and iClicker. Exams are harder than practice, focusing heavily on multiple-choice, misaligned with reviews. Do not take.
Failed me by 0.5 points away from a C- , now I have to retake the whole class and was not caring for students at alllll, literally 0.5 points away from a C- DO NOT TAKE HIM AND DELAY YOUR GRADUATION
