Dr. Winfield is a great professor and will try to help as much as possible!
Very nice lady. Lots of reading in the course. Tricky multiple choice on tests. Gives lots of extra credit, which helps pull even this worst grades up. I Got C's on all tests and still managed to pull an A with the extra credit.
A fun and interesting class even for an elective. Prof Winfield was always upbeat and funny. Will get "bull****" stamp on essays if you're not careful!
aviod her like the plague.
a required class for socy majors, but i'd avoid her if possible. grade based on 3 papers and about 10 homework assignments each of these will take you over 4 hours to complete, unless you are a speed reading whiz. I repeat, avoid her if you can
The class isn't challenging. No major tests, just quizzes, so there isn't much incentive to pay attention to lectures or work hard. Her lecture on Marx was so convoluted the class understood worse after hearing it (she did clarify later when asked)
Since she is the only one teaching 260 there isnt much hope of taking someone else, but have a positive attitude. She is nice but she is veru demanding. TONS of reading and she is extremely picky when she grades. I hated that class.
This class was terrible!! She is nice, but her work is ridiculous. Too much reading and quizes were pointless. She is very critical of your writing so be careful! Avoid if you can!
Gender and Society sounded like an interesting class, but she made it miserable. DO NOT take her for a once a week, three hour class. You will be in there for three and a half hours with a five minute break. It made me HATE Wednesdays.
Her lectures are basically word for word from her power points,(which she makes accessable to you for printing out). However she expects you in every class and takes off points for absences. She is a very demanding teacher and an extremecritical grader.
She is a great teacher, however, very difficult and demanding. She also does not give any leeway on grades she is an interesting person and she is nice. Talk in class and do the work and don't skip class. She appreciates hard work and effort
she grades according to whether or not she likes you, i made sure i never had her again, she loves the internet and computer and gives pointless assignments on them, try to find someone else teaching the class you need, only take her as last resort, lots of out of class assignments
Yes she is hard but the best teacher i've had here. she demands alot of you because she knows her students are capable of alot. I got an Aand felt great knowing i deserved it.
Basically, if you are taking any other hours, dont take this class. You will do so much work, its ridiculous.
Very demanding but a great teacher. Dr. Idee knows what her students are capable of and pushes them to work their hardest. If you don't like this class then you are merely a slacker. I recommend her to anyone willing to learn b/c she is interesting and assignments make you apply the ideas.
I have had up to 6 statistical classes and I still was very confused because her teaching method was not sufficent for a graduate level class. She did not treat her students with any dignty that is expected for a graduate program of this caliber.
She is such a bit@$....The last day of class she "found" someone cheating and threatened to fail the whole class. Her lectures are boring, she makes the class harder than it has to be, and she is very tempermental. If she is upset expect a lot sarcastic quips. Avoid at all costs!!!!!!
she's demeaning, moody, and is severely put upon because she hasn't become a feminist icon. this arrogant woman makes classes a nightmare. beware!
I have to say, the most unfair and disrespectful professor I have ever had. She gives an unreasonable amout of work, and when you do complete it all on time, somehow she loses it and you are counted off severely. UNFAIR!!! Truthfully I would consider her an anti-feminist.
Prof. Winfield must be the worst person I have ever met, let alone a teacher. She picks favorites and if you even challenge her authority, even just playing devils advocat, she will hate you forever. I suggest avoiding her at all costs, especially in a classroom. She is an anti-feminist, controlling, Bi#@h and I am pretty sure she thinks she is god!!
Dr Idee is really hard, but this is the only teacher I've had at the College so far that demands you to actually use your brain. If you don't want to do that, take another professor. If you're willing to take on a challege with a really dedicated and interesting teacher, take her. You won't be sorry!
DO NOT take this class if Dr. Winfield is teaching it. She knows her stuff, but she makes the class ridiculously hard. She assigns so many papers and it's so time consuming! She makes this class WAY more difficult than it has to be. All soc. majors: BE WARE of this woman!!!
Avoid her at all cost. All the bad things said about her are true. She picks favorites and those would be the only people talking good about her. She also acts like she is teaching high school and has no respect for her students. She also messes up grades a lot. BEWARE!!
Prof Winfield is way too hard. Only take this class of you have to and take it at a time that you do not have alot of work to do in other classes. You have an assignment due for each class, have to view videos and write a final film paper that she grades quite unfairly. Her powerpoint slides are helpful but are not what is on the test. Donottake
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES! She makes a simple class too complex by making you do DETAILED outlines of each chapter of the book and write 2 short and 1 long paper on movies that you watch. She has her favorites and you better not challenge a point she makes or she will humiliate you. Her powerpoints are useful; however, they aren't on the test!
Dr. Winfield is EXTREMELY hard! She expects TONS of work from her students and thinks that her class is the only important one you are taking. Takes lots and lots of your time and effort to make at least a C in her class. Missing more than one class is detrimental because of all the information you will miss. She's nice but must be on her good side
don't take her. she sucks. i've had her twice and disliked her both times.her grading is irratic;you could get an A on one thing one day and a D on the same thing another, there is no rhyme or reason to it much of the time.an attendence nazi, tons of boring busywork.she def is eager to help and will meet you after class if you need.
omg she is horrible. ive had her twice, too. it isn't that the material is hard (it is actually very easy), it is that you have to have exactly what she wants, word for word what she said in class to get a good grade. the busywork is ridiculous, total waste of time.i wish someone else had taught this class.
Awful. Monotonous. Boring. Likes to talk. Very repetitive. Have to take notes. Asks stupid questions. Lots of reading, lots of homework, hard tests. She is an unfair teacher, hard grading scale. Avoid if possible, take Hope or Bacanic or Rigney, but not Winfield.
Desperately needs a text book. She is all over the place with the material.
The worst professor in my entire college career. Shows favoritism to certain students. Grading is unpredictable. She believes that nothing else exists besides sociology. Its too bad she can't be fired. :(
Ive earned As in both classes that Ive taken with her. The information is interesting but in order to do well one must participate in their learning process. Yes, there is lots of work, and often times when writing a paper you'll feel like you're doing it wrong, but by the end of the course most people feel accomplished and proud of their work.
She is a horrible woman, a horrible teacher, and completely unreasonable! She feels that her class is your only and doesn't even let you turn in work early! If you like feeling good about your work and grades don't take her, she makes you feel horrible!
Lot of work but learned a lot
There is a lot of work in the course but I walked out with having learned more than in many other courses. You have to do the work and come to class to do well.
Research is not my favorite subject but if you put the work into the course its not that hard. She makes you keep up with the work by collecting homework. There's group work and I like that
this lady is tricky. At first you think she is cool and she acts like she is really fair....until she grades your exam! she expects you to know stuff that she doesnt explain in class and she thinks that her class is the only class you should worry about. she sucks
Professor is the worst professor I have had at the College of Charleston. She is evil!
She is extremely smart, but talks around the subject a lot. Can ask a simple question and receive a lot more information than you bargained for. This is a hard course so you have to attend class and put in the work, but it's not impossible. She's willing to help so ask questions and go see her for office hours. Likeable professor.
Don't. Just....don't.
Dr. Winfield gives back to you what you present to her. If you are trying to bs your way thru one of her classes it is not going to work. She is demanding but she is fair. I think she is one of the best professor's in the Soc. department. But keep in mind she is not going to hold your hand but then again neither will your future boss!
The buzz on Rate My Professor about Dr. Winfield for the most part I do not agree with. Yeah, I found her class hard (got a B) but I also learned more in this class then in most of my classes taken here. She treated me with respect & supported my efforts. Tests were done with team partners as was the major project. I would recommend her class.
Hmm not sure what to think in the beginning because sounds all good with group test an participation points but sometimes hard to grasp the response shes looking for on tests/homework. Otherwise nice lady! Read! Read! Read!
I have Idee for Sociology of Food. What she teaches is interesting, but it's hard to take notes on what she says. Occasionally she'll put an outline on the board or draws a diagram, but most of what is on the test is stuff that she talks about. Going in, I thought the class would be about food, not sociology. Bad assumption.
Terrible teacher. Avoid Sociology of Food at ALL COSTS.
Dr. Winfield is the very helpful but she can be forgetful when it comes to updating slides for class but she is always available during office hours and makes additional hours after test to discuss any problems. You have the option to take test in a group or alone. The mutiple choice comes from lecture examples. You must attend to get a good grade.
I had Dr. Idee for Sociology of Foods. I thought it would be a fun, discussion-style class. I was completely wrong. The material was interesting but she wasn't very helpful or clear on a lot of things. I wish I hadn't taken this class and do NOT recommend taking the class.
Tests are impossible. Assigned a 10 page paper 10 font single spaced over spring break. Unavailable for emails. Class lecture is completely irrelevant to text and tests. Do not take. GPA Destroyer.
Never ever ever ever ever
I thought this class was going to be interesting, but she was not only unreasonable, but completely inaccessible. She was gone from class for like 3 weeks. Her test questions came out of no where and would never admit any mistakes or confusion in her assignments. She was so condescending to the class and everyday I left in a bad mood.
so miserable to sit through her class. she talks SO loud and there is ZERO discussion. attendence is mandatory and pointless. make sure you have some ear plugs and a crossword puzzle or you will want to die within the first 20 minutes.
Took Sociology of Food, expecting a fun easy, freshman class. Incorrect. The class is extremely difficult due to the unclear assignments, using awkward and long formatting for what seem to be short papers. On top of everything there are a plethora of repetitive readings, which if not done, eventually lead to very specific reading quizes. Don't take
Idee wasn't bad. Study examples of the material and you will do well. You have to study though. I got an A and I do not have the best grades overall so anyone can do it.
An obstacle course. Students are treated as if they were recruits. Ego and emotion are on parade. Don't try to take on the drill sergeant. The less you say and the less you know, the better off you'll be.
Gender thru film ST online summer class. A lot of work including a paper and a test. Maybe bc of summer or maybe her normal work load. The way she talks and explains stuff is sometimes confusing thouht she should be a graduaTe professor. I got an A so if you do the work you can do well. Shouldnt take her if your a lower leveL.
Winfield refuses to answer questions. Even if you go to her office. Absolutely everyone in our class is lost, and we have no one to lead us. I'm sure she is a nice person, but she does not realize how impossible she is being.
I took this first year seminar expecting an easy A and thinking the class would be somewhat interesting. Instead it ended up consisting of pointless papers, quizzes not pertaining to what we were learning in class, and projects she assigned for busy work. You have 2 absences all semester you miss any more your grade WILL drop. DO NOT TAKE
This teacher will ruin any positive feelings you have towards this class. She is nearly impossible to communicate with (will NOT respond to emails; very selective). If you enjoy long and pointless lectures, 50 page plus readings paired with cheap shot quizzes then this teacher is for you.
Will not answer questions (if you have the guts to ask them) and defends questions as if they were a personal attack on her. No class discussion all lecture. Very unclear. Rude. Not helpful. AVOID SOC OF FOOD AT ALL COSTS
Don't do it. She is way to tough of a teacher for a sociology of food class. Tough grading on ridiculously long papers.
Very unclear when teaching- she only touches upon topics that are tested on heavily. Lots of reading but no textbook use. HARD grader. Not an easy A. Would not recommend the class.
Probably one of the rudest teachers that I have ever encountered. Always looking for the next excuse to put a student down and make herself seem more superior. Incredibly boring lectures.
This woman does not want to see her students succeed. She is not helpful and grades extremely hard. I took a first year seminar class as a FRESHMAN and was completely blown away by no matter how hard I tried she just would never give me credit. She is absolutely awful and I would NEVER EVER EVERRRRRR recommend her to anyone!
Worse teacher I have ever had. Does not want her students to do well. Horrible lesson plan and all around educator. Ruined any initial interest i had going into this subject.
She is a horrible teacher. I had her for my FYE and almost failed the class. She gives really hard multiple choice exams and then gives you awful grades on the written part of the exam. She is also kind of annoying when she talks. Don't take her!
Freshman : Do not take this class. Please heed my warning and take any other learning community or FYE. No matter what you do, she will not award you a good grade. I am a sophomore and this was the worst teacher I have ever had. Avoid her classes even if you have a slight interest, she will take it away from you.
NOT a good professor- overly demanding and doesn't grade fairly. I took this 100 level class as an elective and it was a bad decision. I would never take this class or any of her classes again.
HORRIBLE teacher!! Does lectures online then you go to class and take a quiz, which most of the time has nothing to do with what you are learning, the group projects are an every class thing and are difficult and she gives you no time to complete them. her tests are impossible! She's horrible at explaining things and doesn't help the class pass
AVOID THE CLASS! It should be easy but she makes it more difficult than it needs to be. The class has nothing to do with sociology. She lectures all semester and is very hard to listen to. Not much homework, but she is a very tough grader and can be very rude as well.
She is unclear about the lecture material, delegates the most ridiculous papers/assignments. So rude to students and doesn't actually answer questions but rather talks around the point. Class was always boring or superfluously confusing. Do not take her. And, if you must, good luck.
Writes directions poorly, and then penalizes you for getting results from her unclear directions, and actively tries to not acknowledge the unclearness of her directions when you bring it up. Tough grader on written section of test with a lot of other students, I only did well because I went into extreme detail and even that wasn't enough for 100%
All test are online and multiple choice. Many group projects. Lectures are confusing but are on oaks.
IMPOSSIBLE CLASS! i have taken her twice and hate going to class. All test are online but are multiple choice and short answer. She is a hard grader and her lectures are confusing. She does not like athletes. She bags on them all the time. AVOID this class as much as possible.
Do not take her if you can help it. She made what should have been a fairly straightforward class very difficult and graded so hard. She also was always super sassy and rude to me and made me feel stupid. Just DO NOT take her if you have another option.
I took this class thinking it would be fun and interesting, needless to say, I was very wrong. As an FYE, it is VERY difficult. She makes everything soconfusing because she lectures too much abou the topic. This could be a good thing, but its not. Trust me. it's a super boring class. Also, rips apart essays, literally. I would never take her again.
I took this class because I thought it would be interesting and a fun class but its not. She treats everyone like there are 5, very condescending. She gets mad if someone asks a simple question and she acts like she knows everything. I would not recommend taking her unless you wanted to be treated like you are a child.
DO NOT take this professor, you'll regret it. This was an FYE class, mandatory for freshman to take so there was no option for withdrawal. She takes the course WAY too seriously and it's not interesting what so ever. Does not answer questions, makes you refer to the syllabus. Her lectures suck. Just don't take her.
Worst professor I have ever had! Hard grader even though the class was an FYE. Grades are unfair & makes the class way to difficult. Class is lecture only & makes everything extremely boring & uninteresting. Project is basically graded on if she likes you or not. Find every small detail wrong & takes off points & wants essays on exams a certain way
By far the worst professor I have ever had in my life. So many reasons I don't feel like typing them all.
Dr. Idee is one of the most difficult professors I've ever taken, especially considering that this was a freshman starter class. Her grading is exceptionally tough and specific and she holds very high expectations which is unfair considering her explanations of assignments and projects are extremely unclear and confusing. Would not recommend.
You have 4 opportunities of grades, one being a group project. What is on the test, well surpasses what is talked about in class. The hardest grader I have ever had and her feedback on graded assignments is about things she never mentioned having to do. I was excited for this class but it ended up being my worst class. I wish I had never taken it.
She is definitely the hardest professor I've ever had. Her assignments don't reflect what she teaches, and she grades so harshly it's unbelievable. Definitely try to avoid this professor if you can!
Is Dr. Idee a tough grader? Yes. But, if you actually pay attention and read your assignments, you'll make it. Dr. Idee also encourages you to see her during office hours all the time. I only wish that there were more assignments, because the few that you have are major. Dr. Idee believes in tough love, because college only gets harder...
