You will work hard. She holds the bar very high but her curve is generous. If you don't keep up, you will fail. She tries to learn the names of all students... very impressive. Can be intimidating, though.

Less than friendly and the material is tough, but a C is easy while you have to earn an A.
She really knows her stuff and makes sure by the end you do too. If you want an A you'll have to log the time, but it's possible. Everyone in the class gets called on once to answer a question out loud.
You have to keep up with the work because there are quizzes every Friday. Good curve but harder tests, but in the time and you should be ok.
You will have to put in the hours, but she presents the material well and makes things easy to understand. Quiz every Friday can be a pain, but ultimately is good for keeping you up to date.
Quizes are good practice
If you want to got to Medical School and you want to really know your stuff in organic chemistry and be challenge you should take her. Butif don't it will mess up your gpa unless you are very good on organic chemistry. Exams are hard. There is a quiz ever
No help from TAs at all. Expects you to know so much after giving one example. Book just as bad.
Chemistry is awesome; Reich is not. TA's are good at handing off microphone but not much else. I hope they're not getting paid.
Ohh god... this is the worst class. If you don't have a lot of time its practically impossible. This isn't fun learning. Reich has a distorted idea of reality.
She doesn't really teach organic as much as she makes you learn it yourself. The book is pointless. You would be better of buying a different OCHEM book and teaching yourself. It will save you tuition.
wow, hard, but if you study, its not that hard
Reich runs the class at the speed of the very best students. It could be a fun course if you have a lot of time to pour in. It may take over 10 hours a week to be on top of everything. Its not really a fair class if you're taking a lot of credits. Quizzes are a good chance to lose ten points.
challenging class
Difficult, many people stuggle with this class. She prepares you well for exams by having quizes and practice problems every week, though you often haven't learned how to do the practice problems yet. If you do the work you will do alright, usually a generous curve on exams.
Tough material if you don't put in the time, if you do work a little its tough to do bad because the curve is so generous :)
Reich is passionate about what she does. She explains things really well and forces you to keep up and learn the things she teaches because of the difficulty of her course, perfect for those who need to learn ochem for mcats and such
She's very strange, and the class is difficult, but she generally explains things well in lecture. It takes a lot of work to keep up, but the quizzes are fair if you don't fall behind. Exams are hard, but the curve is usually generous.
Listen, if you want to learn organic and really understand the mechanisms then take reich. She is a good teacher that will help you. I havent had to work that hard for my grade, but a lot of people do. If you just want the A and dont give a dam about understanding the material take Zimmerman.
I love how her Friday quizzes cover material from the following Monday. The entire class is like that. The only reason people say they learn in this class is because lecture is so poorly done that you're forced to read the book.
It's hard to say whether to avoid Reich--while her class teaches you more for the mcats, the benefit there is cancelled out by her screwing your g.p.a. Definitely don't take if you're schedule is heavy at the end of the week because she quizzes every friday.
Didn't require too much work or lecture attendance. Ochem is a class that you either get or you dont... Reich is a good professor, take her if you actually want to learn the material.
Hard but you will learn a lot
She's a tough grader, but you learn more in her class than any of the other 343 professors, so if you're planning on continuing with Chem, I would recommend her.
She is an awful lecturer, the book is 100 times better than her. as people say she quizzes on stuff you havent covered yet. Her first midterm average was a 52% and she had the balls to say she was disappointed and that we didnt study enough. avoid at all costs
One tough cookie. Organic is hard to begin with, and she expects a lot from the student. YOU WILL LEARN YOUR STUFF. She is no joke, so if you want to do well in future chem, take her. If you dont care, then I wouldnt. I think that she is pretty good--she did win the UW chem prof. of the year, so it must mean something
Taught me the material very well. She is also very helpful during office hours. The averages may be low on the tests, but the curve makes up for it. Take her if at all possible, youll be happy you did when you know so much more than your friends with other professors
A nice woman and good lecturer. Take her if you want to learn, and not for the grade; haha, I just wanted to say that her shirts she wears looks like bathroom wallpaper.
Intelligent, articulate & knows material well. Will definately know more about ochem than other students taking other professors. However, she can be rather cold, condescending, and intimidating during office hours. A for ability to teach, D for making students feel uncomfortable in approaching her.
You have to learn your stuff. This class is no joke, but she is one of the better chem professors. Quizzes every Friday.
She is an very hard prof. but you learn a ton. I recommend taking her if you are going into med/vet school, or taking chem in the future at all. You will know your stuff when you are finished with her.
Won Chem prof of the year award a few weeks back. 60% seems to be avg for tests and quizzes, the curve has been generous enough to be fair. Friday quizzes make you keep up with the material. She's tough if you don't keep up, but if you're not putting in the effort, do you really expect less for this class?
Awesome instructor. Learns virtually all 400+ student names. Weekly friday quizes are hard enough to make you study, but not demoralizing. Get quizes and tests back next class. You better like stereochemistry, because you are going to be an expert on it after Dr. Riech gets through with you! Can't recommend her highly enough.
I can't imagine other OChem professors could be more difficult than Reich. While Reich is open to helping students, her tests are neither straightforward nor similar to previous years' tests. You can feel well prepared coming into a test and then be blown away by the material on it--you will have never seen it.
She rocks!
Orgo with evil Ieva is a NIGHTMARE. Honestly, if you can get ANYONE else, do so! People say that she is the best teacher of org. chem., but regardless, you still end up doing very poorly because she makes exceptionally difficult tests. Additionally, she is a mean old hag; if you go into her office hours, she is rude and condescending!
Incredibly difficult. Curve is always huge and tests are not very representative of what is taught. She can be very awkward in lecture as well. I don't know what it is about her but I really hated her.
Awesome teacher. Knows what she is talking about and willing to help you out as much as you need. Curve is awesome. Just know mechanisms early and youll do fine. She teaches everything you need to know in class, no need to read the book.
Awesome. Tests are hard but fair, and the curve is generous. She is clear about teaching and answers questions willingly, and sincerely cares about her students and her teaching ability.
Class isn't as bad as some people will tell you. You will learn the most from this professor, especially for what you will need on the MCATs. Be prepared to study every thursday though as friday quizzes are pretty difficult.
you people are stupid thinking this course would help you on the mcats. next time why dont you take a few practice tests so you can actually see that basically all of the ochem you need to know is from chem 343.
Most difficult of ochem professors, but will learn the underlying concepts the most. Speaks very fluidly & makes things easy to understand, even if hard. Students of other profs struggle in her 2nd semester class but her 1st semester students do super well. Friday quizzes can be hard, exams are challening, lots of hard synthesis and mechanisms.
Memorization will not help you get a good grade with her. Understanding concepts really do matter. Exams are never similar to old exams, so don't expect to be surprised if the new exam/quizzes are harder than the old ones. Best way to get a good grade is to actually understand everything, since exams and quizzes change quickly and dramatically.
Very difficult class, but you will actually understand organic chemistry after taking it with Ieva. She truly cares about teaching and goes the extra mile to connect with the students. Somehow she memorizes the names and faces of all 400 of her students.
Organic Chem under Prof Reich was one of the best experiences I had. It was challenging at times, but hard work usually will get you good marks. And her exam papers are not that hard. Seriously, I scored better in 345 than 343. She really encourages critical thinking, and gets you to understand the basic concepts of o chem thoroughly.
Take Reich if you're into masochism...worst teacher I have ever had in my college career. Plan on reading the entire worthless textbook cover to cover and teaching yourself all the material. Doesn't explain ANYTHING!! The TA's were pretty worthless as well. If you have to take her, you're SCREWED!!!
This class is a nightmare. If you have a fairly good self-esteem don't take her as your professor, you will lose it within days. I'll be regretting this decision when I apply to med school.
You really need to put time into understanding the problems in addition to memorizing. She is very willing to meet with students and does a good job at explaining things to you. If you really want to learn ochem take her... you'll learn more if you take her over other professors.
Her exams are extremely challenging and you really have to master the material to do well. Hard work definitely pays off and I'm sure I'll be glad I took her class when it comes to the MCATs. Don't let the poor reviews scare you off.
She gets you to learn the material pretty well. At least if you want to pass. Her tests are ridiculously hard, medians usually hover around the low 60s. Be ready to put in the effort to get a decent grade.
She is extremely intimidating and challenging--but almost in a good way. She can be very sassy when you ask questions in class so don't let her get to you--I think it might be her way of getting you to work really hard. Basically she's really scary but a good prof and you'll learn your stuff if you study
She is kind of intimidating, but I enjoyed class, office hours are EXTREMELY helpful, and don't just study off of old exams, definitely made that mistake for one of them :-/ it was bad.. but anyways, I LOVE her
She is a really tough but amazing professor! If you don't put in the work you will be killed, but if you put in the effort you can almost be guranteed a B because her curves are very generous :)
She is very hard and exams are very challenging. Weekly quizzes require that you study all the time. If you actually put in the effort to do well, you will. She is very down to earth and if you take her lecture and actually try you will master O-Chem.
One of the few profs on this campus that actually TEACHES. takes a lot of work but you learn a lot and do well if you put in the time.
Reich is a really cool and knowledgeable professor! I am really impressed by how she applies her knowledge and brings her enthusiasm for organic chemistry into her class every lecture! She does the discussions every week herself! One thing is, she sets really brain-wrecking papers. But its worth the pain in exchange for the fantastic teaching.
Professor Reich is SO GREAT. She really cares about your learning of organic chemistry and recognizes your achievements if you put in the effort. She gains your respect by proving that she knows EVERYTHING about Organic Chemistry and really challenges you on the exams.A lot of problem solving is required, but curve is generous.I highly recommend her
Professor Reich is an excellent teacher- she really makes you learn your stuff! This is a difficult class, but if you put in the time and effort into reading the book and understanding the material, you will be rewarded- curves are generous. She can be intimidating, but I highly recommend her!
Exams and quizzes are discouraging even if the curves are generous. As an average student, she is very intimidating to approach. If you take Reich don't be shocked to get a B or BC if you're an A student.
She is one tough cookie. The class is hard, but she taught well. She really wants the students to succeed and cares about the students. She also tries to learn the students names. The textbook was useful, and so is making notecards for all the reactions. It is very rewarding to get a good grade because everything is so tough.
The material is extremely difficult, and while she does a great job at teaching it, there is no way to make this stuff interesting or easy to understand. She will blow you away with her ability to remember names.
pretty good
Class is a pain in the ass. She claims you don't have to memorize however, you do...and I mean a lot! Getting an A is extremely difficult considering there is a good third of the class who don't seem to have a job, life, or any other class above the 100 level besides o-chem.
O-chem is difficult no matter who your professor is, even if you are an A student be happy to get out of this class with a B. Reich sometimes moved too quickly, and it was difficult not having discussion sections. She does have a passion for the subject and her students. Text book was pretty much useless.
Ieva is amazing. She LOVES ochem and it shows during lecture. Although her class is hard, she's willing to help anyone who asks. Office hours and discussions are super helpful. If you put in the work and study time this class is NOT that bad. You have not truly learned ochem till you've had Prof. Reich.
Prof. Reich is an incredible professor. If you have a chance to take her for O-chem, TAKE IT. Yes, the material is difficult and her exams can be beastly. But if you attend lecture and put a lot of work in outside of class, you will be guaranteed to learn the material. She shows O-chem is not about memorization, it's about grasping the concepts.
hard! don't take 345 if you didn't have her for 343. quiz EVERY friday. good lecturer, well organized but difficult quizzes and exams. tests you on what she taught, but makes you think. GO TO TA OFFICE HOURS. big curves---an A is definitely possible if you try.
Difficult class, but if you stay on top of things it's very possible to do well. If you keep up with the material enough to do well on the weekly friday quizes, you most likely will also do on the exams. She knows what she's talking about -- but seems a little hard to approach at times.
Reich is AWESOME. Highly recommended if you want to actually learn Ochem. Make sure your Thursday nights are open to study for Friday quizzes. Quizzes keep you on top of the material--don't blow them off. Overall, put in the time necessary and you'll do fine. Don't be afraid to ask her for help. GREAT PROFESSOR!
Awful Prof! Obviously lives & breathes chemistry & is incredibly intelligent. But she DOESN'T teach! You will have to teach yourself. She calls on people at random & makes you present & is condescending ALL THE TIME. Quiz EVERY Friday. Tests are VERY hard & nothing like the practices! She assumes you know more than you do. Will hurt your GPA.
Great professor who does a good job of clearly explaining difficult concepts, reactions, mechanisms, etc. She holds optional discussions every Thursday evening in preparation for the weekly Friday quizzes. Average score for the quizes are about 62%, but that just allows for a more lenient curve at the end of the course.
Very intimidating, but once you get past that, she teaches fairly well. As long as you understand the concepts (i.e. MECHANISMS), you will do very well in her class. Her class is so difficult that you must constantly study and keep up to pass with a good grade, and therefore, you learn a lot on your own. Requires lots of time to get a good grade.
Overall, I think she teaches well, BUT you will not get good grades!! It will totally hurt your GPA.
She's definitly a hard professor
Tests were very tough. Going through the parcatice problems in discussion and the practice exams aren't enough. I did all of those and read the chapters all the way through and I think I'm headed for a B. Don't blow off the Friday quizes. They are an easy way to boost your grade with a little bit of studying.
Very good teacher- you'll learn a lot but your GPA will be hurting unless you're a chem genius
Ieva is the best. She is very difficult but if you seek help during her office hours, study daily, and do problems after problems, an A is possible.
You have to teach yourself the material, pretty hard class if you take it with her but you learn alot
She was really hard. I bombed the first exam and then spent all waking hours the weekend prior to the second exam in the library and ended up average between the two exams. I learned so much from her though and thought she was a really great prof. She looks like a T-rex though.
Ieva is a great professor, but she's tough. You'll have to do your fair share of work, but if you stay on top of your stuff and DO ALL THE PROBLEM SETS/GO TO DISCUSSION you'll be fine. The book is not really necessary. Don't rely on the practice tests because they are often misleading. Get stereochemistry down because she really hammers it home.
Use her lecture notes
Hardest class I've taken in college. Best professor for understanding/learning the material the best, but you'll work your butt off to get there. Hands out microphones in class to the names she calls- Graded on response (3 pts). Exams are tough but the class is curved. DO NOT CRAM for any exam THE NIGHT BEFORE or you're screwed.
ieva makes ochem sexy
Dude, I love Ieva. I worked my tail off, and still didn't get a very good grade, but man... she's so smart! And she's not condescending when you ask questions (like a lot of chem profs are). HARD class. Helpful Professor.
I really enjoyed Ieva. She through a few random questions on the exams, but if you listened/attended class then it wasn't a big deal. Go to lecture, do some of the practice problems in the book and use her old quizzes. Overall, the class is not as bad as what other people have written.
Avoid. At. All. Costs. Extremely hard. Be ready to dedicate your life if you want a decent grade. Extremely generous curve no idea how I got a C.
By far the hardest class I've ever taken. She is extrmely smart, but expects you to know everything about ochem. If youre a chem major id say take her class as youll learn a lot. If youre not, go with a differnet prof, all ieva will do is lower youre GPA and make you feel bad
She is a very good teacher. Very easy to understand and she explains herself very well. At times she comes off as abrasive, but she has good intentions. She makes you feel like you need to know the stuff to make her happy, so you want to learn it and you're ashamed if you can't make her happy. I think that actually helps her teaching ability.
I had her for Oraganic Chem 343 and 345. Very hard/work-intensive course, but Ieva was very helpful and I think she's a great professor, albeit a bit intimidating. Managed to get a B in both semesters, pretty generous curve.
ieva is the best teacher i've ever had at UW hands down in teaching ability. If you want to do well, you can do well.
Had her for both 343 and 345. i felt that she is easier in 345. had both A's. her classes aren't easy, but if you prepare for friday's weekly quizzes, you don't need to put in much effort for exams and can still do well, thanks to the curve. don't choose other profs just because you get intimidated by her. after all, you will learn a lot from her!
What a wonderful woman! Take Ieva if you really want to understand OChem, not just memorize. You'll be astounded at how much you learn at the end of the semester. Don't listen to these other bad reviews. Ieva is an incredible teacher. You don't even have to touch your textbook. Everything you have to know is taught in lecture! Take her!
ANGRY, CAlls you out... but you know your**** afterwards and thats what you want right? gives out the least amount of D's and F's
Extremely intimidating and fairly rude to students during lecture, but almost always available to students outside of class for assistance if needed. Be prepared to get called on in class!
Had Reich for 345 spring 2010. Hard class that I spent A LOT of time studying for. It eventually paid off when I got an A. You actually LEARN ochem instead of wasting your time memorizing it and will be amazed by how much you learn by the end of the semester. Quizzes every Friday (avg was 61%). Exam averages: 59 to 69%. DO NOT CRAM FOR EXAMS.
Tough class, but if you put in the time it will probably pay off. Very intimidating until you get used to her teaching style. Class quiz and exams averages are typically low, so there is a large curve. I worked my butt off but learned a lot and ended up with an AB.
This is by far the HARDEST class I have ever taken. I thought 343 was hard, but 345 with Reich is 1000x harder. Amazing professor though - she really knows her stuff and makes you THINK about things instead of just memorizing. HIGHLY recommend her!!! (worked my butt off and got a B)
Very intimidating, but with weekly quizzes forces you to keep up with the material which actually helps a ton. Curve is very forgiving. Office hours are extremely helpful- just have to get used to Ieva's temperament. A tough course, but probably the best professor to take for 345- you walk out of the class knowing the material well.
I had a low B in Gellman's 343 class, struggling and studying all the time. At the end of 345, I got a personal letter from Ieva Reich ranking me 13 out of 328 students. This shows what a difference a good professor can make.
This is a really tough class. Very hard quizzes once a week, and lots of studying. Her lectures are okay, but she gives lots of information. Hated that she asks each person to answer a question in front of the lecture hall of like, 200 people, microphone and all. If you don't get it right, she's rude about it.
Ieva expects are students to know a lot of material and is very challenging. However, she is a fantastic teacher and I would highly recommend her, although she can be quite intimidating!
An excellent professor! She makes you work really hard, but it's very rewarding. Weekly quizzes are tough at times, but really prepare you for the exams. Don't be intimidated by her asking students to answer questions. It keeps the class interesting, and she helps you answer the question. Overall, she makes sure students understand O chem as a whole
Not a very good professor. Very unusual teaching style that takes a while to get used to. She is a very intimidating teacher. She goes over material fairly quickly without fully explaining everything. Weekly quizzes and group problems take away a lot of lecturing time compared to other professors. I would avoid her at all costs if possible.
RUN AWAY! she doesnt teach as much as she rambles on about chemical reactions, doesnt teach conceptually at all. everything is memorization (which is great if you dont like chem) but seriously, if you even see her on the street, turn the other direction and run.
It was definitely a tough class but if you work hard, keep up with the reading, do as many end of the chapter problems/practice quizzes/etc, you CAN get an A. Office hours are crucial too. Very time consuming, but in the end, it's worth it.
This teacher is incredibly lucid, very helpful, and the weekly quizzes are irksome but necessary for your mastery of the material. Her intensity stems from a passion for the material, and it's infectious. You will learn. Take orgo with Reich if you want to learn Organic Chemistry.
Disredard those people that say she doesn't explain the reactions, they're just bitter that they didn't try hard enough to understand the ochem language. Her methods of teaching are for a reason, THEY HELP YOU. Do everything she asks, practice all book problems, and you should do just fine. She is quirky and passionate. TAKE HER!
I took both 343 and 345 with Reich. She is a fantastic teacher. I was told going into O-chem that Reich will "keep me on my toes" and it is definitely true. Her exams and weekly quizzes are very fair to material covered in lecture. She calls on people in class, so pay attention! She is a great professor, TAKE HER!
She truly wants everyone to do as well as they can. Thursday review sessions are helpful, so attend if you can. She's sassy, which is amusing, but be prepared to be talked-down to if you ask a question. That said, she explains everything very clearly and will walk you through to an answer.
I had her both semesters and hated it at first. But you learn to like her. Her examples are very clear and she goes through mechanisms very well. Weekly quiz questions can be impossible sometimes, but really do help you understand material. She can talk down to you, but she does try to help. Overal good prof, and always encourages office hours.
Taking Reich for ochem (both semesters), has been the greatest decision I made in college. She is so helpful and nice, I almost wish I can take her class all over again.
lectures aren't terribly interesting but take all the notes and go to office hours and the class is pretty simple
Dr. Reich was an interesting professor. At first she was very bossy and sassy. However, she truly wants everyone to do well. She is a good teacher and her lectures are very representative of her tests. The people complaining about her personality obviously didn't try hard or get a good grade. Put in the effort and you will do just fine.
Ieva is interested, plain and simple. She cares about the success of her students and the integrity of the material she presents which show up in her teaching style and her availability out of the lecture hall. Her exams, while hard, are representative of lecture material. The book was necessary to cement themes approached in lecture.
Ieva has been the best professor I've had at madison. She's extremely clear and her lecture notes are easy to follow. You will work harder for her than any of your other professors to get an A (or even a B)but you will end up knowing your stuff. She was also pretty clear about which parts of the book she wants you to disregard
I took Ieva for both Chem 343 and 345. Her tests were hard, but fair, and she tells you what you need to know. You will leave knowing OChem so if you plan to continue with chemistry I would suggest taking her class.
she is awesome!
I took Ieva for 343 and 345. I loved her. She told you everything you need to know for exams and you only need to use the book for clarification. You really understand the material with her. O-chem ended up being my favorite class. Love her!
Hard at first but she is generous when giving grade. Study hard and possible to get an A!
I took her class Spring 2010. At the time, I felt that her demeanor was degrading and rude, but in all reality it was her way of motivating us to learn the material. This morning I took the OAT(optometry) & BOMBED physics, scored okay in biology/genchem, but was in the 94th percentile in OChem w/o much preparation. I have Ieva to thank! TAKE HER!
