He thinks his students are still in Jr. High making them move to the front if they are simply wispering a question to their neighbor, he threatens to drop you if you don't take notes, talk, or if your cell phone goes off by accident. He is a RUDE teacher.
Rude, crude, mean, mean man. Run fast away, run very fast. There are so many good math teachers out there steer clear of this guy unless you like being treated like an idiot.
He is very unclear in lecture and doesn't know how to truely help his students. He offers plenty of office hours, but he won't help you understand the material.
HE is the worst teacher I have ever had he makes you feel like an idiot and seems to enjoy it. His office hours are a joke and waste of time he blames you of not trying if don't understand his muddled lecture... He is a very mean unhappy man !! don't take him !!! you'll be sorry
I withdrawled this class because he was such a horrible teacher. He hates teaching and you can completely tell by the way he teaches. He has a thick accent which you cant understand half of what hes saying. He moves way to fast and for people like me that are horrible at math, you get extremely lost
That man can't crack a smile! I don't understand how SBCC allows this man to teach math!
In Mr. Alarcon's defense, I found him to be a very nice and helpful teacher, much easier than my Math 107 teacher, especially in regards to tests. He would automatically add 10% to a test if we corrected it afterwards, thus making a B into an A easily. I highly recommend him.
terrible class, so freaking hard. hes so terrible.
i couldnt understand what he said! will not answer a question that has been asked before!

He's so quite i'm in the front row of the class and I still have difficulty hearing him. the class is so freaking easy but its so boring which makes it a nag
it's true. he was the worst math teacher i have ever had. and everyone in the class was a complete ass to him. but if you've ever talked to him outside of class then you'll see he is a very very nice man. I really did not deserve to pass that class but he passed me. And I think it's just because I was nice to him whenever I saw him around campus.
Extremely easy professor. Does not collect homework assignments. Take if you know the material already! Some don't like him because you can't understand him and he moves a little fast sometimes but class is very easy and he tends to let his classes out early a lot
ass. very quite, skips steps, not clear and very difficult to understand. why is he a teacher?

I don't think he's that personable of a guy. Everytime I try to talk to him, negative comments come out of his mouth, but he teaches math pretty well. It's a pretty easy class so far.
Mr. Alarcon has a great method for teaching the subject. Everything is laid out for you..he tells you the concepts in class very clearly and gives some exercises that show you the material that is exaclty on the test. A class is only boring if you make it boring. compaerd to my current math professor, Alarcon was the best teacher ever.
the class is easy if you are good at math. you basically have to teach it to yourself because he can NOT teach. there are quizzes every class and they are like 5 questions and it is so nice that you can do test corrections. he doesnt make an exciting learning atmosphere. if you ask him a question hes not good at answering it.
This man is a horrible teacher! He doesnt answer any questions,he doesnt give helpful notes(shows no work),and he has a monotone voice. He keeps his back towards the class the entire time,so he is hard to listen to.You have to teach yourself by doing worksheets all hr.He will not keep you updated on your grade status in class, and overall is HORRIBLE!
If this man is any indication of the quality of other instructors at SBCC then I am transferring out!
Horrible teacher!! If you need things explained to you do not take his class. He also is not a very nice guy, and very hard to understand. He also doesn’t care if you pass his class or not so he is not going to put the effort in to help you.
Pretty easy to see how students who have reviewed this man did in his class....He is a VERY kind, gentle man. He WILL help you when you need it. He encourages office visits. DO NOT BE AFRAID to take a math class from this Professor. He is a good teacher. He is also a good person.

if this site allowed negative ratings i would give this teacher negative infinity.
i should have known there was a reason at the beginning of the semester why all other classes were filled and his had room. AVOID this guy!
this teach was horrible!! its a good thing i had taken this class in high school other wise i would have been lost the hole class.. He doesnt speak clearly and he isnt willing to help you out... sure you can go to his office but why when you should use class time to ask questions... but he doesnt give you a chance
Guys, please! If I had paid attention to the comments on this site, I would have not taken this class with Mr. Alarcon. He is definitely not looking for approval, but he is a fine teacher, who is always prepared. I definately recommend him.
Horrible teacher very hard to communicate with and he is not approachable at all does not want to take time into helping you and uses ALEKS so if i were you i would stay far away from this class
Totally unhelpful...and really really boring
Very easy teacher. I was unsure about his class from what I read on ratemyprofessor, but if you follow the examples in class, do the handouts and questions assigned in the book (which you don't turn in) you'll do fine. Easy A. If you have quest. go to office hrs.
Hese really not bad at all, nice guy, doesnt require you to turn in any HW. He is kind of bad at explaining things and is a little on the boring side but if you put a little effort into studying yourself you will do fine. HE GIVES YOU TEST CORRECTIONS I MEAN WHO ELSE DOES THAT???? In other words its impossible to fail his tests as long as you got a
Total jerk. Doesn't communicate well. Sucks at teaching, can't explain anything so you can understand. Stands in front of what he writes on the board and goes too fast. HORRIBLE TEACHER SHOULD BE WORKING in a CUBICLE!!!! Don't take unless you want to be completely frusterated!
I was forced to take him for 107. I read this thing and thought Oh Sh*t. cuz i am not a good math student. Turns out he was a great teacher. Not the most sociable guy, but very smart. He doesnt just tell you how it works he shows you. No HW. Extra Cred if you dont do well on tests. Wants students to succeed. He needed some love. Finished with an A
****!!!!!!!!such a joke
I took this class with a lot of apprehension. I started getting more confident during the class, because Prof. Alarcon makes you feel like you can do this! I never thought I could get an A in math, and now I will sign for Math 107 with him, for sure.
I had taken Math 1 twice before I finally passed this time. Mr. Alarcon can be cranky at times, but he helps you very much...
Does not encourage questions, or promotes exercising. Clases are boring. He teaches to the blackboard. Further explanations are mostly just repetitions. Easy to obtain good grade without learning much.

I took him online in 2002.We never used the book which cost over $100 and couldn't be returned even as used. Didn't answer emails I had to report him to the head of the department.
Mr. Alarcon is extremely boring. He can be helpful at times, but then again, at times not really. He doesn't collect homework, but assigns quizzes every class, so don't miss it. If you want to be bored out of your mind, I suggest you take this class. UGH
I have taken Mr. ALarcon twice. I took math 100 with him in the fall and got an A for the first time in my life. I made a point of taking math 111 with him, and I got an A again. Mr. Alarcon is always in his office if you need help.
I have finally passed math 1. I took maht 1 two times before, but I failed. Mr. Alarcon gives opportunities to make up tests that you failed. He says that he doesn't want to catch you doing something wrong, but something right. I hope my math 4 teacher is like this.
Overall not personable.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! I have never had a teacher less elpful in my life. hes on a power trip. oh if you do take hi class dont do any bodily functions he'll flip his top. he never helps! hes rude. we had a sub for him once we learned more from the sub in one day then we ever did with him. dont tourcher yourself...dont take this class!!!!
He is not the most entertaining teacher, thats for sure! But as long as you do some of the homework and dont get behind, you will get at least a C!
Great teacher. Very helpful if you go to office hours. I wish he would teach calculus too.
OH MY GOD. k so if you want to wake up in the morning and get to school just to go to sleep again, this guy is the ONE. i've never been so bored in my entire effin LIFE. he's really easy if you already understand the subject, but other than that he's absolutely useless
I felt like I didn't learn much in his class. I spent most of my time in the math lab getting help from my old math teacher. The book sucks in general, but a lot of his teaching differed from the book. He's a nice guy, but I couldn't learn from his methods. Didn't explain the why's and how's and would skip steps or concepts in general
extremely unhelpful. makes you copy 200 word word problems word for word or no credit. i did a 15 question assignment that took me 3hrs and 6pgs of words no even part of the work. for a non transfer class he needs to chill and be more positive about helping. boring and just doesnt seem like he enjoys what he does.
Not helpful. rude. not happy being a teacher needs to consider another profession
this teachers horrribblee! everyones either asleeep because he talks low, to himself, and back to the class, with a strong accent, and the other half is trying to keep up with what he's trying to say about the lesson. He makes countless errors when hes teaching and never realizes it until the one awake person does, DONT TAKE HIM, if ya wanna pass
OMG. He seemed to hate being in class as much as his students. The only good thing to say about him is he almost always let us out early.
take him!
Professor Alarcon is a one of the very few math teachers that lets you make up bad exams and gives extra credit. He is a good teacher and if you come 2 class and try you will atleast pass. I recommend that if you do not understand math very much that you take him. This was the second time taking 107 but this time I finished with a B.
Do not take his class! It was like I had no teacher. I got an A in two previous math classes and dropped this one because it was like I didn't have a teacher. Found out a friend QUIT school years ago because of him (has since been accepted to UCSB) but the experience was that bad of one. Find someone else, really.
SBCC is supposed to have a reputation of being one of the best CC's in the country. I don't know how that is possible with teachers like this in front of the classroom. Avoid him at all costs!
I'm having a hard time with this class. Sometimes Dr. A skips steps when he is showing how to solve something. That can be very confusing. He is also pretty brisk! The class has a lot of quizes, homework, and an online program. One upside is that if a lot of the class score poorly he does a makeup exam. I wouldn't take one of his classes again.
I passed this class, but that was because I used the math lab alot and hired a tutor. The teacher was useless. I couldn't tell if he hated the students or just hated teaching and took it out on us. Take anybody else. Avoid him.
Horrible teacher!! He is extremely mean and rude. Do not recommend taking this class!!
Ignacio is a horrible teacher, he doesn't teach at all, he goes over things on the board but doesnt explain them. I would never take a class with him again. I dont know if he hates his students or hates teaching or is just miserable but do not take this class especially if math is not your strong suit
In all my years of schooling (and that's lots) never before have I encountered a teacher that seems to care less (if at all) about student comprehension or success.
On top of being absolutely terrible at teaching he is also not a nice, and I could never find him at his posted office hours. He seems unhappy and unenthusiastic about teaching. On the plus side he let us out early alot.
I think that the people who find this teacher complicated and "mean" and the class difficult are simply retarded. There is no other explanation. He is straightforward, the class is incredibly easy. It is not the teacher's fault that you are stupid and make no effort in the class - it is yours.
Great teacher. Kind of boring at times, but if you stick it out, you will pass.
do all of your homework or you will not be able to even do the quiz. books aren't allowed in class, so copy what he tells you word for word pretty much. Alarcon doesn't seem like he likes his job..
I always wanted to leave. He has a soft voice that makes you want to fall asleep. Doesnt really pay attention when you have a question and doesn't make sense when he does answer your Q's. Do your homework, quizzes are based on that. And he does leave during class and he does let u out early. overall he is easy.
Good teacher, doesn't go above and beyond, just expects you to do your work. He has no personality, but no math teacher I've ever had, has. He's a nice guy, just stick it out, you'll pass.
very boring, but if you go to class and takes notes off the board then youll be fine. attendance is mandatory because he has quizzes almost every class. pay attention and study the quizzes before tests
Like pulling teeth. He seems like he just shows up because he has to. His voice makes you fall asleep within 2 minutes of lecture. When people asked questions about anything he just repeated himself and didnt make it much easier. Had to drop the class for the sake of my grade. Do not recommend.
He's a great teacher in my opinion. Very clear and doesn't put harder-than-taught-in-class questions on the exam like most math teachers at CC. I'd highly recommend. Don't know why there's so many bad ratings for him, you just have to put some effort into it.
Ignacio is great! I wish he would teach math 150 sometime. He's not the most entertaining teacher, but he's great at teaching math. i'd recommend him.
Ignacio is a great teacher. Very helpful and is always willing to answer questions. If your not lazy then you will do just fine. I don't understand all the bad ratings. Great guy with a PHD.
good guy.

He's awful and lacks interest in teaching and seems to thrive himself on failing his students. He gives short answers and has the ability to make students feel stupid. You ask him for help and he'll reply, "Aleks will teach you", when it WON'T. Attendance is mandatory because he gives a 10 point quiz at the end of every class.
Great teacher.
Such a bad teacher! Decided to take this as an online class and emailed him when ever i had questions but never got responses yet the only emails he sent me were telling me I'm failing his class? seriously? He will not help you at all and if u have numeral dyslexia like me you be best to find a teacher who is willing to work with you.
This is unfortunately the worst teacher I have ever had. Im scared to ask him questions because he makes me feel like a complete idiot. I need to pass his class and have not received below a b while at sbcc and think i might actually fail his class. He seriously sucks.
If you spent your entire life searching the entire galaxy you would not find a worse teacher than this. Avoid at all costs.
If you had a time machine to take you to any time in the past or future you also would most likely not find a worse teacher. Highly recommended if you want the unique experience of observing the worst teacher anywhere.
I see all these negative comments coming from lower division students. He is a good teacher, do the homework and your good.
His method of teaching is ok. His class is simple, just do the HW, and show up. If you study and put effort into it you will be fine. Although he dropped me because he claimed I wasn't in class, and yet I had taken all of his handouts, notes and quizzes. When I tried to bring them out he got upset and just re added me because I did well on the exam
He is an honest quiet guy that has a very well structured class. Attendance is important, he lets you know what is required from day one. The people with the negative reviews from lower-level classes are probably just lazy and don't do the work. Really straightforward. Do the homework, study for the quizzes and tests and you arer golden!
Homework is not collected however it can be used on the quizzes. You get a cheat sheet for every test. Not a good teacher if you are not already gifted at math.
If you can get past his social awkwardness, he really is a great teacher. Always makes an effort to answer homework questions thoroughly & wont start lecture until everyone understands the previous days lecture.
Do the homework,Quiz everyday based on that! If you fall behind you will get lost. He provides every opportunity for you to succeed. No reason not to pass the class if you stay on top of your work. He may skip a few steps but if asked he will explain it. If homework is done this class should not pose a problem.
Attendance is a must if you want to pass If your looking for a student friendly teacher look elsewhere because he easily gets upset or has the tendency to shine people off when help is needed if your not very good at math dont have him as a teacher but if you know what your doing and don't need a lot of help he's perfect
This teacher demands punctuality, respect and a desire to succeed. Do your work - each and every day. Do not fall behind. He will not tolerate laziness. A genteel man with a kind heart - do not abuse that fact. His style of instruction is not for everyone - but if you are willing to work - then be prepared to be challenged.
Teaches the material well enough, and is really straightforward on the quizzes and exams. Attendance is a must for this class or you could be dropped. He really is a friendly guy and is easy to approach. Just do the homework and and the worksheets in class and you're good.
Show up and do your work. Online went a little fast.
He is a hard grader, and a tough teacher. BUT he is a kind person (if you get to know him), and makes you learn. I don't recommend someone taking this class unless you are prepared to work hard. but thats what college is about. Though it was one of the hardest classes I have taken I am glad I took it.
Take it! The students who commented below that said his class is hard probably didn't study much at all. He gives enough notes for you to do well in his class. For stats, if you still don't understand the section, read the book. It's much clearer than his way of teaching. If you're taking this class through ESP so you will also be set with a tutor.
honestly, i didn't do well because I have a hard time learning when there is little interaction. He doesn't smile...He made me not want to go to class and would be rude to me in front of everyone which is not professional. If you're looking to work really hard and already have a gift for math then go for it, if not i suggest you look elsewhere.
This is a very strong and eager to help professor. We got notes on a white board, worksheets to practice on, homework WE CAN USE DURING quizes, and we even (gasp)get to use our notes on exams! Plus he totally makes us get it. It was a hard class but if you're committed Alarcon is there to help you.
I had Ignacio for a mid semester start math 107 course. I had actually already taken the course in HS so I knew the material without doing homework, but anytime anyone needed help he was there. English isn't his native language but he was still able to explain things in a very clear way. One of the better math teachers I've had. HW wasn't mandatory
Horrible teacher. Blows thru material like it's the end of the world. Doesn't slow down no matter how many students ask him to. Almost any question you ask is met with a reaction that says, "that's the stupidest question I've ever heard" (happened to a lot of students in our class, not just me). You practically have to beg for help.
I'm sitting in his 138 summer class right now. He's so bad. I would never recommend that anyone take his class. He goes so fast that people have to take pictures of everything he writes on the board. During class I've also seen a guy on Khan academy while Ignacio is teaching. He's somewhat rude to students at time and totally unclear. Don't take.
To the best of my knowledge, Prof. Alarcón has, in every (yes, every) instance that I can remember, been: patient and willing to answer all students' questions, kind in every way of communicating (feedback, verbal and non-verbal), punctual for his lectures, methodical when lecturing, and interested in teaching. He even uses an open source textbook!
If you attend everyday, take good notes & do a lot of studying on your own, you have a good chance at passing. However, it will most likely not be an enjoyable experience for you. Be a very fast note taker or have a good camera on your phone because he goes so fast and erases even faster. He is also unclear, unapproachable, and condescending.
Wouldn't recommend him. His teaching style is unclear and incomprehensible. He simply starts lecturing and writing notes without any context as to what you're meant to be learning. Prepare to be excruciatingly bored. Ended up having to teach myself the material in my own time. His grading criterion are clear, but he doesn't give out any B+ or A-'s.
Guy gets a bad rep. Took him for the summer session, although the lectures do get boring, as with any sort of long lecture. Alarcon is always willing to explain and answer your questions in detail.
condescending at times. Talks softly so he can be hard to hear, especially if sitting in back or the door is open. He doesn't specify that attendance is mandatory but you will probably be dropped if you miss class. I learned almost everything through khan academy or the textbook. Lectures were long, boring, and pretty much useless.
I do not recommend him at all. Its routine: answers hw questions, lectures, hands out worksheet, quiz. He's super quiet, speeds through the lecture w/out stopping and gives no helpful clarification on anything ever! Quizzes every class beware. ONLY 4 TESTS WORTH 300POINTS EACH. The book is more helpful than him because you're always confused!
Professor Alarcon lectures the whole class, rarely stops to take a breath. Others had issues keeping up. His lack of expression and deep voice make him SEEM unapproachable or rude. He is actually very helpful. Homework was not graded, so only quizzes and tests matter. Tests are reasonable. And he uses an open source ( free online ) textbook.
My experience with Mr. Alarcon is much different than many of the other people leaving reviews. My previous class was math 100 and this course was basically a review of that class. Homework is not collected it just helps for the quizzes every class so if you skip class you skip a quiz, so in a way attendance is mandatory. I had a great experience
Lectures get a little boring but he doesn't give you anything he hasn't previously taught. I've gone up to him multiple times with a question and he always clarifies. He can be a little quiet but ultimately he has been my favorite math teacher and the only teacher who's reasoning I understand. Also the only math classes I've ever gotten an A in.
Too soft spoken
Don't take this teacher, especially over the summer. He does not explain anything, goes extremely fast, and makes everything 20x more complicated than it needs to be. Expects you to figure everything out for yourself with worksheets he gives out every class. Never been more confused in math before, and its not the difficulty of the class.
Moves pretty quick through material so I was in the math lab everyday after class which helped a lot. Best part is that he is EXTREMELY organized. Half of lecture was learning material & the other half was doing worksheets which he helps you with. Quiz everyday at the end of class. He also calls you out if you leave class. HW is optional.
professor alarcon is amazing. His class won't be easy if you are not good at math. But if you know basic stuff of math, this class is pretty chill. Good for international students that are good at math. He is super helpfull.
gotta attend every class he gives quizzes at the end of each class he doesn't grade homework so u don't have to do any but the quizzes are based off the homework. he lets u use notes on each exam and on final. take a lot of notes and pay attention and you'll do fine.
He's lethargic, soft spoken, and rude. Not an easy environment to learn in, especially if you struggle with math. Don't take this professor.
Great class, got much better as course went on. Simply creates notes on whiteboard during class and leaves time to work on class work, and then a quiz is given over the previous days' material each day. Homework not graded, but helps for quizzes. Textbook is online. If you need a lot of individual help, probably not best teacher, but he will help.
At the beginning I have to be honest I didn't like him at all. Quiet but straight to the point. The class was lecture then worksheet. The lecture is straight to the point and direct, which is the best in my opinion. Everyday there is a quiz from the previous lecture. Hint! Take good notes, go to class, go to the in class tutor, and don't skip.
Great teacher took him for math 120 as well. Everything he teaches and quizzes his students on is exactly whats on the tests.
Find a good app it will help you a lot, if you have some difficulties it helps to understand. Also, he allows to use notes during tests. Even if you are extremely bad at math, you can still pass it with A if you make good notes. People think he is rude, but he is not. Show him that you care about this class, respect him and it is going to be fine
horrible teacher, better off learning from the math book.
The good thing about in this class is that he doesnot collect homework but he gave homeworks just for practice and his teaching skills is not that bad but if you have any question or do not understand from the problem he will go over it and explain it again until you'll understand how to do it. Plus he lets you use a 1 page note for the exam!!!!
hes so big he overs the board when im tryna write stuff down lmao, take him if u want an easy A, but dont if u havent had experience with algebra 2. unless ur a risk taker ;)
Professor Alarcon was a nightmare to work with. He was inaccessible and cold, and would condescend constantly to the class and individual students. This man should not be a teacher. He also implied that he found accommodating my disability cumbersome and unnecessary. Said my being blind wasn't a valid disability! I pity anyone in his classes.
I did not enjoy Ignacio's class. He is a very tough grader and doesn't explain very well the material. Remember, quiz every lecture! But, some of them are take-home quizzes. Some of his quizzes include things he has never taught, which is quite troublesome for most people in my class. I have to admit that the math lab taught me better than he did!
Attendance is mandatory. Lectures too quickly and isn't good at explaining himself and is little to no help , doesn't really "connect" with students. The class is often left teaching itself so connect with people around you, they'll be your best source for help. on a brighter note you get a cheat sheet for test and he lets out class early.
If you're trying to get an A, take Ignis. This guy is the man. Very straight forward class, just be prepared by reading the textbook before hand so you are able to follow what he goes over in class. He lectures for the first half hour to an hour, passes out a worksheet that preps you 100% for the test and quizzes, then last part of class has a quiz
Great class. lectures a little boring but very short and concise. Class would consist of about an hour of lecture, an in-class worksheet where he helps anyone if they have questions, then a quiz at the end of every class on the previous lectures material.
Great all around teacher. What I like about him is that he trims the fat of material and gets straight to the essential points. Some people don't like his style but usually, it's because they are slacking.
Their will be quizzes you have to take every class about what you learned in the last session. The teacher mumbles and faces the board while lecturing. As he writes the problems he blocks what he's writing with his body then erases it. Bad Explanations. Homework is optional. The most useful activity was the work packet. He falls asleep in class.
He's good at math, and very smart, and as respectfully as I can say it he has no talent as a teacher. He wasn't good at answering questions or explaining ways of understanding it, he knows how to do it and that is that. And finally, he has a habit of completely covering the board as he explains what he's doing... which makes it hard to understand.
Gets flustered if you ask him questions, not accessible out of class, and barely talks. Its difficult to catch up if you skip class. Does not use Canvas. Overall, I dont respect him and am confused as to how he is allowed to teach, because he does not encourage struggling students who want to do well.
worst professor ever! Does not teach at all. He seems to have zero interest in teaching and should definitely not be a professor! you also cant even hear him half of the time and runs through the material so quickly.
Ignacio is such a great professor. I have always struggled in math but he made the class really easy. Hes very straightforward and makes math easy to understand. I really enjoyed how his class was lecture, class work, and the a daily quiz.
Really good at math and is always willing to help. Class is structured well. All that being said, his lectures usually suck, so you may have to teach your self some things.
Every class he lectures for about an hour or more and its very hard to keep up because hes very quiet and gets flustered over questions and wont slow down for anything. Then he gives you a blue packet and youre allowed to work with people. He goes over the packet then you take a quiz on the HW worth 10 points. Use the blue paper on quiz! And hw
Ignacio knows a lot about math but he expect students to know everything. He doesn't really care if you understand and you will have a quizzicality to every single class. Does not want to help if you ask for extra credit or if you can not come to class. I do not recommend.
Taught myself a lot of the material, had to buy a textbook but then ended up using the online one instead. Lots of homework (isn't graded) but you can use the next day on the quizzes (which are daily). Notecards allowed on tests. Go to class and know what you're doing and be able to actually hear him (very soft-spoken w/ accent)
Talks really quietly facing the board and does not explain at all. I had to teach myself most of the material using the internet.
Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had. I understand that not all teachers were prepared to teach classes through an online interface- but he couldn't even do the basics. The grade was completely based on four tests, NONE of which I was ever handed back. There wasn't a single lecture- all notes. Trust me: go with someone else.
He offers a daily Zoom Q&A session. He rarely understood my questions, and he got defensive when I asked him follow up questions. He answered most of my emails successfully, but not my classmates'. He grades on four midterms. I got all 100%s. Most classmates got Bs in the class. If you don't stay away from him, the textbook will save you.
He was rude and does not like answering questions. He is boring and and slow when teaching. He does not like going in detail and seems to not care if his students need his help.
Ignacio is seriously the worst teacher. In his lectures when he writes you can't even tell what he is writing so you basically have to teach yourself through the textbook. He never responds to my emails when I need help. Please avoid taking classes with him.
hes old and sweet, hes still figuring out zoom technology so it is hard sometimes. expect quizzes everyday after class and dont ask him to slow down or go back a slide bc he wont. He does respond to emails and leaves you notes on how to solve the problem on the quiz.
worst teacher ever!! I took him online, he expects his students to know everything and assumes that we understand what he is teaching us. doesn't like to answer questions. he wants you to turn in the quizzes and exams a certain way but doesn't explain how to do that. it seems like he is just not interested in teaching and shouldn't be a profess
He gives a quiz every class unless theres a test. His lectures consist of him literally just talking to the board and mumbling. You can get a decent grade in the class if you put in the work outside of class but its difficult
Had average lectures with a quiz after each one, but you're given 24 hrs to take the quizzes and exams on paper, so take that as you will.
You get the quiz/test at noon and have to do it in 24 hours, open note. Quizzes almost everyday and 3 tests plus a final that will replace your entire quiz scores or 1 test score. I never watched the lectures. You can just look at his worksheets for examples. You have to send everything through email so won't know grades. He's very rude but prompt.
Only 3 weeks in and can already tell you hes a tough prof. Quizzes after every class but not due until the next day at noon meaning its open note. Also every class is the same thing, take notes on 2 sections without stopping and with no questions then take a quiz. I only recommend Prof. Alarcon if its your last resort.
He's not rude or anything, but he is the worst teacher I've had. He doesn't actually teach at all, and what is in the lecture is unrelated to the subsequent quiz. He doesn't make any effort to make the subject matter clear or understood. He expects you to know everything already. For 210 don't worry about getting the book even though he says to
This professor expects you to know the material and his lectures are very unclear, and he doesn't answer questions. I emailed him very professionally and nice (as you should to your professors) and was met with three worded emails that did not answer my questions at all. Honestly recommend that if you take this class you attend math lab.
He doesn't use canvas when grading and knowing your grade throughout the class is very hard. You have to solve the questions only his way unless you're not getting any points.
As an instructor, Alarcon is terrible. He provides the worst feedback and grades very harshly. HOWEVER, his exams and quizzes are open for 24 hours untimed and open book so the amount of work you put into these is directly the grade you get. Exams are extremely time consuming and brutal. If you put in the work, an A is absolutely achievable.
I would only recommend taking this professor online. The exams are 24 hour windows and un-proctored but that is only because he cant figure out how to use canvas. He is very in-flexible. if you are willing to spend 12 hours on his exams you can get an A. However, his grade is final even if HE makes the mistake while grading.
His lectures are okay, a lot of self-learning is involved. The exams and quizzes have a 24-hour window to be submitted, so essentially the amount of work you put in will determine your grade. Was not an easy A, sometimes worked on exams for 8 hours. He responds to emails fast but do not try to argue with him, because that won't get you anywhere.
You're going to have to teach yourself but his class is really straightforward which I liked since it was a summer course. The textbook is great, he drops your two lowest quizzes, and your final can replace one of the three exams or the cumulative quiz score. If you read the textbook and do the exercises he recommends from the textbook you're set.
Worst teacher I've ever had, does not respond to emails and grades incredibly harsh. Don't expect to be taught anything by him, if you can teach yourself then you can succeed.
He is awful. Not understanding to emergencies . Concise and blunt emails . I would NOT take him if you have other options . Self teaching is a MUST , and expect tests every day of the week . 10/10 would not recommend.
Besides barely being able to understand him or his lectures, being online made this class a breeze, yes it is still calculus but using his recorded lectures and material notes on top of really understanding the material by just finding videos online made this class pretty easy.
The only thing he does as a teacher is give lectures, he does not help you in the class and if you ask questions about the lecture he is condescending and expects us to already know all the material. This class is incredibly difficult because the grade depends on your test scores, which you have to teach yourself because of his terrible teaching.
Professor Alarcon doesn't really do anything aside from posting recycled content on canvas and grading daily quizzes. No interaction, unforgiving grader. If you aren't comfortable self-teaching, avoid this class.
Avoid at all costs. If you have no other choice but to sign up for his class then good luck.
Do not take this professor. He is not clear, hard to understand, and does not provide much help. I am now in Calculus and both my Trigonometry and Calculus classes are easier than taking Alarcon's class. Very difficult. Please avoid.
literally didn't learn anything.
Tbh a very chill class. Was expecting a lot worse reading the other reviews but was pleasantly surprised. The professor mainly just lectures for around 2 hours or so without interruption and then gives you worksheets to work on for the rest of class. Quizzes every day, but they're short and pretty easy (nothing unexpected).
He is very direct and to the point. As long as you attend every class and complete all the homework, you will pass the course.
RUN. He mumbles to the board and is not willing to explain anything further. Cant understand anything that he is saying
I wish this class was more of a human interaction based, rather than a professor and K numbers. Professor is not willing to communicate with his students, dry and grades harshly, also not willing to understand personal matters concerning a student's absence and could easily fail you. Do not sign up for his class no matter the circumstances. 0/10
This class requires a lot of self-study. The professor is not very engaging, but the open-book, 24-hour exams make it manageable if you put in the work. unstuck study was a huge help for exam prep.
professor is not fit to teach it's almost as if he has never cared for the thought of it or seems to even enjoy teaching whatsoever. Zero enthusiasm about the topic looks more dreaded to be here than most of the students, constantly blocks the board and doesn't know how to move and erases the material immediately after he's finished. Bad, avoid!
terrible, seemed to have zero care for teaching the least enthusiastic person in the room, seems more dreadful than the students, blocks the board then erases it immediately not giving anyone a chance to copy it down, terrible teacher doesn't explain anything just puts it on the board and expects understanding doesn't give homework quiz every class
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Unless you are completely fine with having to teach yourself calc. His lectures are terrible, it's just him mumbling to the board and blocking everything he's writing. You will have a quiz everyday, and you're only graded on those and exams. The only good thing about out his class is he allows you ONE page of notes for exams.
If you care about your grade, do not take his class. You're only graded on quizzes and exams, and you are left in the dark about your grade until he passes back exams. The problems on the exams are made much more difficult than need be. His lectures are good for nothing. I genuinely do not understand how people are passing his class.
This prof does not care about his students. If you don't solve a problem the way he "taught", he will mark it wrong. If you ask him a question, he just looks at you like he has no clue what you asked, or gives a very dry response that doesn't even help you in the slightest. Does not engage with the class at all, honestly don't waste your time.
Horrible. Students were walking out on the first day. He doesn't know how to teach and speaks in a monotone voice. He also covers the board while writing and then erases the work 30 seconds later. If you get stuck with this teacher just take the class at a different school.
He had the worst lectures. This old man doesn't know how to teach.
Worst teacher I ever had. Doesn't teach you anything, just solves problems on the board without explaining or teaching you how to do it, blocks what he's writing with his body and then erases it while you are trying to copy it down. Quiz every class and a few exams. Doesn't use canvas. You will be teaching yourself 100% of calc. DO NOT TAKE IT!!
Worst teacher I've ever had. Gave no explanations for functions/equations in class, expected students to understand everything, practically refused to answer questions, literally just stood with his back to the class the whole 2 hour lecture writing on the board barely speaking. Quizzes every class. Take literally any other teacher than him.
He doesn't teach anything
The lectures are not the best. Quiz at the end of every lecture. I just studied during lecture and then caught up later with the material. He erases the board really quickly . No homework required, 3 exams and a final. Final was worth 200 points. He is generous with partial credit. Lets you use a ti84 for exams and a notesheet. Not too bad tbh
Lecture consists of tons of examples, so there's no surprises on tests and quizzes. He allows some notes and calculators for tests. And most impressively he returns all work with feedback and a grade the very next day. Honestly one of my favorite classes and I feel way more confident with math after taking his class.
He blocks the board when writing but it's not too bad and it's still easy to take notes. There's no homework but there are quizzes every day besides the days after exams which are pretty easy. His lectures are quite long and he gives out worksheets. The material itself isn't too hard and he teaches pretty straightforward.
Ok yes his teaching style is pretty bad if your not a note taking person and also he uses the whiteboard a lot which he also covers a lot. However his grading is really easy and simple. Also you won't know your grade until each exam you take so if you stress about your grade throughout the semester just know that. Overall easiest math class ever.
He's not good at explaining
