Do not, I repeat, NOT, take a class with this professor. He is the most disorganized person I've ever met. Going to lecture is pointless since nothing covered in class appears on tests. Test questions are really tricky. I am a studious student, and I never felt prepared for his tests. If are taking a class with him, may the heavens be with you.
Overall, Mr. Gomes's class was challenging and required some logical thinking skills in Biology. He often gives long lectures and after class you WILL need to read the chapters to pass the homework and test. As long as you read and review homework questions, the tests shouldn't be that bad. Some questions are tricky tho. I would take again.
He is the best professor I have encountered. Yes the class is more on the challenging side but he does try to help you out. Lectures are long but interesting. One of the most understanding teachers you will ever met. Stay on top of work and you should be fine. Ask questions he's always there to help clarify. For quizzes quizlet should be your bff.
Be prepared to find help outside class environment, and to take tests where the questions are neither based on homework, lecture, or even the book. He expects students to build on complex concepts that should not be expected from an intro bio class. Especially at HW where lab is required from most students regardless of intended major.
Professor Gomes tries very hard to make his very long lectures at least interesting, but does not give rapid feedback on work done on labs (big part of grade). His tests hard, where he likes to give more than one answer per question, but best answer needs to be chosen, and are based on nothing seen in hw or lectures.
Although he specifies that attendance is graded, it is a waste of time. The tests are not based on his lectures but on his judgement of what students show know. Every day attendance, reading through the chapters, and doing homework, will not necessarily help with tests. (Despite his opinion)
Classes are lecture heavy, but slow enough to take notes, he posts all lecture slides. All of his study guides are noted to general ideas you need for the tests. The class uses Masteringbiology that has many good tools to help study for tests. The only criticism that I have for this class is the lack of getting back grades for Lab.
Mr. Gomes is a very kind man, and easy to talk to. If you do not understand something he will go over whatever is confusing you till you understand, BUT YOU HAVE TO TELL HIM! He goes through the lectures pretty fast, so you have to be attentive at all times if you want to pass. DON'T be afraid to ask questions and participate, and DON'T skip class.
Mr. Gomes is a nice man. Although I have to say, you have to do your part in studying for course and do lots of extra work outside of class. Majority studying and understand the material comes from self-taught hours. If there is something you don't understand feel free to ask Mr. Gomes. Review everything according to study guide and slides.
Good teacher as long as you do your work & show up to class. The class is hard but not impossible, work together with your group and you will succeed.
As long as you put in the time and the work, you should be fine. The class is lecture heavy and the labs are easy. It helps to read the chapters and take notes on your own though. Professor Gomes is very nice and asks if anybody has questions so if you dont understand something, SPEAK UP. The exams are tough but they are not impossible.
For an INTRO Bio class, I found this class to be extremely difficult. Although Prof. Gomes is a nice individual and is very knowledgeable on the subject matter, he is not necessarily the best teacher for this course. Only medium he uses is powerpoint, study guides do not help, tests are extremely difficult. Had to teach myself a lot of the materia
Professor Gomes is approachable and willing to help students. He is clear about how you can succeed in the course. Use the text book and class notes for study material.
Professor Gomes is very great and knowledgeable person. However, his lectures are unclear and unorganized. The text book he uses for Bio 121 was very difficult and confusing. These what made the course the hardest.
Professor Gomes is a very good person and very knowledgeable about the subject. He's always there to help solve any problems or concerns about the course. He's very understanding. Bio 121 is a very intense course and yeah this class does required a lot of work. But if you're willing to put the work, everything will be good :)
A very smart teacher, but not good at conveying his knowledge to his class. Expects you to know most of the subject already and does not even use the book, just power point slides. Very disorganized, seemed like each class he was surprised about what we were going over and just taught us from memory. Did not get any labs graded till the end.
I'm so glad I am taking this challenging class with Prof. Gomes! He has been so kind and has made my first semester back to school after 17 years much easier than I anticipated. He is an intelligent professor and explains the material well. Although it's tough, I feel more prepared for the future. He truly cares and wants everyone to succeed.
Good professor, outside studying is a must. If you like a hands on teaching "bio for dummies" this is not the professor for you,he doesn't give out hand outs, he tries his best to explain and if you paying attention you'll do fine, exams are based on hw. Must do hw to do well on exams. not an easy class, have to put in effort to get a good grade
Gomes is a kind professor who is passionate about his work, he wants the best for his students but he will not let any cruise through the class. If you ask for study guides, take time to get extra help if you need it and take advantage of extra credit then you will do well.
His lectures are very long and not helpful. He is a kind person but a very tough professor. If you slack off, you will not pass the class. This is a class for people who are extremely hard working and focused.
I really enjoyed taking bio 121 with Professor Gomes he gave us the opportunity to improve with extra credit projects. I learned a grip and now feel confident to continue the rest of bio classes. Mr. Gomes is easy to talk too, respectful and understanding. Show up to class!
Lectures are very boring ,He teaches from his head and its hard for the students to grab the concept of his teaching.
He made the test extremely difficult and the homework very long. It is time consuming. But I showed up everyday and worked hard for my grade. But he is very caring. I've never had a professor care so much about my grade. He tested my strength in school. I recommend to read every chapter and do all the homework on time.
He is an average teacher.
Pay attention and make sure you are organizing your notes well throughout the semester. Professor Gomes will make you work for your grade. Read the chapter and do your homework as you go along throughout the week. Dont wait. His is concept driven. Dont miss labs! He is a great/thorough professor. Gracious only when you prove to work hard.
I enjoyed the class a great deal. Professor Gomes is considerate and fair. The class went at a comfortable pace. His lectures are a pretty good synopsis of the chapter, pay close attention so that you are exposed to the material before reading the chapter, it helps. This is not an easy class but there are many opportunities to excel.
Gomes is very transparent and outlines what needs to be done in order to pass his class. His class can be difficult but he is always accesible and offers tons of extra credit. Up to you if you cant to take advantage of it!! Reading is MANDATORY!
My first day of class I just knew that this man would change my thoughts on biology. He is an amazing teacher and he gives you all the tools you need to pass his class. Do not take it for granite. Listen to him and please read the material provided. He will work with you only if he sees that you are trying. He changed my life.
Long lectures, not the greatest at explaining directions. Homework will take you a while to complete. Often writes on the smart board with dry-erase markers and the white board with sharpie.
You will learn a lot about biology even if you dont like it.
I took BIO 114 over the summer , Prof. Gomez doesn't explain well but he grades fairly. He doesn't speak loud and has an accent so make sure to sit in the front. If you really want to learn bio he is not the best teacher, but at least he gives credit for doing the job, I get an A, He just need to improve his teaching method.
Nice guy. Horrible teacher. So unclear in his explanations. Doesn't follow text book. Says he purposely adds questions to tests that were not covered in class. Doesn't understand the questions that the class asks. Forgets what he has taught in which class. Always confused. Always disorganized. Simply not able to instruct a class successfully.
Professor Gomez will make you work for your grade so pay attention and make sure you are organizing your notes well throughout the semester Read before he lecture and do all your homework on time He is concept driven, make sure you do not miss any lab is an excellent and fair professor This was not an easy class but there are opportunities to Excel
I honestly love Prof. Gomes! He honestly cares about the students being able to understand the concepts. Personally, I thought his teaching methods were great! Lectures and explains concepts and if you participate you will be able to practice the material. This is a biology class so u have to know concepts and define words! Don't be lazy (everyone)
Prof. Ignatius is a really nice & chill teacher. The tests are easy as long as you do your HW! The majority of the questions on your HW are in the test, so I recommend you to study the HW. Mandatory to go on Lab days, fun & easy points! Long lectures are given in class. He does give you extra credit opportunities, they help boost up a grade letter!
This is not an easy class, but if you show that you care, so will Professor Gomes. You can tell that he cares about what he is teaching and his students. He wants us to do well and is usually available if you need help. For yall who want an easy A BIO probably isn't for you but if you want to learn properly - take this class.
Long lectures , but goes over the things that students dont understand.
Professor Gomes gives several extra credit options throughout the semester. If you care then he cares and will go out of his way to help you.
Recommend
He's one of the best professors at Harold, He's really caring and passionate about what he teaches, he offers extra credit and is always willing to help. I highly recommend him
He's honestly a sweet guy and very understanding. He goes over exams in order to clarify some important topics. Offers easy extra credit
Professor Gomes is very clear since the beginning of the semester regarding the expectations. He really makes you work for your grade, which is good because you actually learn the material. Pay attention, participate, do the homework, study it, and you'll pass.
My biggest issue was when he asked who works so he can be more accommodating, and then acted as if everyone was full time.
Professor Ignatius is super caring..... He just wants his students to understand the essence of biology. You will read which is usual, once you put great effort, you will bear good grades. lots of homework, which will be repeated in the exam. lots of extra credit exams and papers.
in my opinion he was pretty poor at his job. His grading scale made no sense, he didn't submit things on purpose till the last minute.
He's very kind and genuinely cares about his students. Study or you won't pass the class. Gives out extra credit but you definitely need to work for your grade.
Professor Gomes is a very good instructor. He makes sure to explain things if students don't understand, so don't be afraid to ask questions. No matter what Bio 121 is going to be hard, but I think that professor Gomes is always willing to help you. Reading the chapters and completing the HW is essential for this class if you want a passing grade.
Very good professor genuinely cares about his students. Be ready to study in order to pass.
Dr. Gomes is a smart and caring professor. He makes it clear at the beginning of the semester that you have to do the work in order to pass his class. However, he is very accommodating and willing to help his students! He also offers multiple extra credit opportunities throughout the year.
At the beginning of the class, he was extremely thorough on how he grades. He drops the lowest test, lab, and homework grade. I enjoyed biology very much so the material was easy enough for me to learn, but I would go home and youtube the material. He is all over the place during lectures and didn't give back ANY lab grades until after the final.
I used to don't like biology but thanks to the professor I have respect for it. He made it easy to understand and he was very helpful. extra credit generous!
doing good on your homework can really improve your grade! take advantage of all the Extra cedt he gives out even if you think you wont needit. if you study from your homework you will understand the exams. I would really recommed taking his class.
He is a good teacher and so helpful!
Professor Gomes, like any teacher, wants you to come to class and do the work. It's that simple. He was very understanding, but did not mess around. If you showed him you cared and you really want to pass he will help you. He was super chill, tests were in class, and all homework was through connect which was easy. Don't miss lab days! great prof!
Dr. Gomes really does try to engage his students in class so I applaud him in that matter but in the end it's really up to you as a student to want to learn and educate yourself. Dr. Gomes clearly lines out his grading criteria and allows you to know exactly what you need to do to pass the class. Some extra credit was given but exams are majority.
Professor Gomes is one of the BEST biology professor I have ever had. He is very caring about the students performance in class and also gives an extra credit paper to help bump your grade. There is a lot of reading and some homework but it is all understandable and easy to do if you know biology.
Professor Gomes is a wonderful caring teacher. His lectures are good and easy to follow if you do your part by reading a head of lecture and some outside reading and YouTube to really understand the material. He genuinely wants his students to pass so he tries to make sure everyone is keeping up. This was my favorite class!
I had a very good experience with Professor Gomes. I appreciated all advice and guidance that he gave to me.
If you pay attention and stay up to date in his lectures you will pass.
Professor Gomes is very nice and responsible for us.
Fun class. I enjoyed the professor more than I enjoyed my classmates. For context, all classes were forced to be online for summer 2020 and almost all of the students were camera and mic shy. Some could characterize the lectures as drawling or tangential, they often went to time, but that shouldn't be a problem for prepared and engaged students.
I took BIO109 at Harold Washington with Professor Gomes. It was a great class and I learned a lot. There were pop quizzes, but they weren't too bad if you did the reading ahead of time. The exams are doable and so are the homework assignments for each chapter. You can easily pass the class if you do the reading and ask questions when confused.
Absolutely awful with Zoom as Brightspace organization. Lectures are unbearably long and unhelpful as he just reads from the slides. He includes info that was not covered on online homework. He did not set up his class properly for the bookstore. Lots of confusion and frustratio with this class, I'd recommend choosing another professor if possible.
If you care about learning biology, take Dr. Gomes' class! He's an amazing teacher and a great person. His passion for science is inspirational & he is extremely knowledgeable! You have to read a lot, but it's college - that should be expected. Grading is fair. Lectures are great! He's very engaging & cares that his students learn. I highly rec!!
Maybe his in-person class is different, but his virtual class is tough. The lectures are 2.5 hours of reading off slides and it makes me want to smash my router. It is very hard to pay attention to. This was a fully self-taught class for me. Tests and quizzes are timed, he never gives more than 50 seconds for each question.
Prof. Gomes lectures are longgggg. The material is hard, and your book is your best friend during this class. He never answers his emails and is very hard to contact if you have questions or concerns. He is very knowledgeable, but you're better off teaching yourself the material. Also, do the extra credit, you'll need it.
Dr. Gomes is a wonderful teacher. His class is challenging, but never unfairly so. He cares about your education and respects you too much to let you slide by without proving effort. He is also very flexible and understanding provided that you meet him halfway and communicate effectively. Final grade is well balanced with some opportunities for XC.
Dr. Gomes is an awesome professor. He runs a little over during remote learning lectures but doesn't mind being interrupted to be told class is over. The entire semester he was cracking jokes but not to the point where we got to off course. There is plenty of XC opportunities. Attend class&study. I would definitely recommend/choose him again.
Dr. Gomes is a very knowledgeable professor. He does not respond to his emails in a timely manner, but if you mentioned that you emailed him during lectures, he will check them during the break. He gives quizzes before teaching the lesson; he asks that students at least look over the chapter before lecture. Tests and quizzes are timed.
This class was lecture heavy which can lead to being distracted since we're learning remotely. He gives 15 min breaks towards 3/4 of class, sometimes later. I'd appreciate a break towards the middle. Expect to read a chapter and take a short timed quiz before the lecture. The questions that are on chapter quizzes are heavily passed on the book.
Quizzes before the class on homework, he is fair only issue is the quiz time for remote class. IF you are an active parent not ideal to take quizzes during the day with active children. He will listen to your concern and question.
I took a hybrid course, so there was much more emphasis on independent study. As long as you are willing to read the course materials and do homework prior to class, it is not difficult to excel. Dont take this class if you arent ready to study. Pr. Gomes also offers many opportunities for extra credit, and he promotes participation in class.
Professor Gomez gives timed quizzes before lectures. Be prepared to read a lot on your own.
Professor Gomes sets clear expectations. As mentioned by others, he does give out homework but it is exactly what will be on the exams or quizzes he gives you.
Professor Gomes is a great professor. As long as you are engaged and take the time to read and prepare for the class you will do just fine. He is always willing to help the class learn more and achieve the best possible level of understanding. He offers various means of extra credit too.
Dr. Gomes is a great professor, but his lectures are heavy. You need to read your textbook before classes. All quizzes and exams are timed, so you need to prepare well. However, he will give you a lot of extra credits, and participation matters. Be prepare when you take any BIO classes!
Professor Gomes is a great professor. There is a lot of independent work that should be done on your own time and group work that is done during class. One important thing to note is that it is very easy to fall behind and very hard to catch back up, so be sure to do your best to stay on top of the work in a timely fashion. I learned the hard way.
This was a asynchronous summer course. Homework, reading, and group participation are very important in order to pass the course. Professor was helpful and gives thorough lectures and notes.
The content was very demanding, but Professor Gomes was of big help. I always enjoy when professors acuatlly want their students to learn, and professor Gomes is one of them. Do your assigments on time and participate during class and you'll be fine. An improvement for the class would to give a little bit more guidence for the labs.
Professor Gomes is an awesome professor! He has a great way of teaching class and explaining everything. He also gives out extra credit which I think is great. Always willing to help if there is something we do not understand and giving us the opportunity to get our homework done. I recommend professor Gomes to whomever needs to take BIO121. :)
Retook Bio 114 in 2021 in person, I was finally able to understand Bio and pass. Reading and homework were simple through Pearson. Do the Homework and study it and you'll do fine on exams and quizzes. Try to not miss on lab days. Mind/Matter. Always willing to help you if you do not understand. Great professor.
Bio 121 is crazy as it has loads of information coming at you quickly. Prof. Gomes teaches by Socratic lectures, which I think is great because he gets you to really think like a scientist. The lab instructions are unclear sometimes, but he clarifies what you need. He is genuine and really cares about biology. I would take another course.
Professor Gomes is an amazing professor! He's always willing to help out if there's is any confusion. He's caring and gives good advice! The book is really helpful and always read the chapters before coming to class because he gives a quiz before starting the class. He gives extra credit which is helpful. I recommend taking his class! - A.K
Be ready to participate in class. The more you participate the more you will be able to learn. He waits for you to give an answer when he asks the class. He likes to write on the white board and likes to lecture and not read off of slides. Also uses a lot of examples, he also wants you to be prepared for class. He is a great professor.
Biology has you going through different chapters each week with an abundance of information, but Professor Gomes breaks it down and always offers to help. Participation will get you far, so you should be prepared before coming to class. He will ask simple questions at first to make the material slowly become more clear and eventually elaborate.
In my perspective, Mr. Gomes's teaching style is very informative and beneficial. He explains the concepts of the lessons very clearly and excellently. I personally do not have to spend much time on studying the lessons that he had just explained at class. Since I understand the lessons very well.
He is a good professor and works well with you. Attendance is mandatory. This class involves a lot of group work, presentations, and there's usually a 10 question test every class period based off the previous chapter.
Be prepared but also pay close attention to detail.
The professor is very respectable with how he tries to improve his class every year using experience from the previous year. He welcomes questions and discussions to try and help the class understand the material, but reading and especially homework are big parts of your grade. General knowledge of Biology is recommended for BIO114, as well.
Dr. Gomes is a professional, among the best teachers I have ever had, his lectures are outstanding... a standing ovation, and thankfulness to Dr. Gomes.
This prof is very patient and super respectful to his students; very lenient and supportive, too. Gives a lot of homework and quizzes and exams to prepare students to understand material as well as extra credit opportunity. You can tell he cares and is passionate about the subject. Great professor.
Given the opportunity, I would redo my past by prioritizing homework and studying more. Professor Gomes is a caring professor who supported me despite my mistakes and offered guidance rather than judgment, which brought me healing, hope, and optimism to my academic journey.
Professor Gomes acted as a substitute for my class and I must say that he was in exceptional. He will help you understand the topics very easily.
Very nice, caring professor
This was a hybrid class. If you can take this class in person, I would highly recommend it. Professor Gomes was highly engaging during our in-person class. I think the class may be less challenging during a regular semester because you have more time. Be prepared to take ownership of your own learning so that you understand the concepts.
Be prepared to read a lot and teach yourself the concepts. Class is for discussing what you learned from the text. The class is challenging, but put in the work and you will learn a lot. He makes it possible to get a grade that you're happy with. Opportunities for extra credit. I recommend taking the course during a full semester instead of summer
Professor Gomes is great. His interest in his students and his passion for science is inspiring. He comes off as an impersonal hard-ass, but he really does care about his students, and that they feel at least slightly more interested in Biology by the end of the semester. He's a sweet man.. trust his process. You'll be glad you took his class!
I think this teacher is great he teaches great and always helps us if we need help any vey fun and nice
Professor Gomes is extremely intelligent and you can tell he is very passionate about Biology and his field of study. He is overall nice, but some may not prefer his way of teaching. He prefers lectures, and his overall pace is slow. Most of the time I would take it upon myself to look at my notes or the textbook and teach myself the material.
Professor Gomes definitely cares about his craft, and seems genuinely interested in making sure that everyone understands the concepts. Some may not like it but I respect that he insists on understanding rather than just memorizing what we see in class.
If you dedicate sufficient time and effort, you will likely succeed. The course primarily consists of lectures, which can be quite extensive, but the labs are relatively straightforward. It is beneficial to independently study the chapters and jot down notes. Professor Gomes is friendly and encourages students to ask questions.
He is helpful throughout the class, quick to respond to emails. Everything is okay, nothing is special.
I loved this class. Due to the abbreviated time we had in the summer, we did not get to do as many labs as I would have liked. I was able to do very well with the lectures, reading on my own, and keeping up with the homework. I did not love the group presentation aspect so much, but I do feel it was beneficial for building our classroom culture.
During the summer was a little difficult but the class provided great work for students who want to pursue biology. The class provided projects that were good for preparing us for test scores and understanding.
The professor is entertaining, energetic, and passionate, making class enjoyable. He offers ways to raise grades and is accommodating. However, not following the schedule on the syllabus disrupts learning. The order of Quiz --> Exam --> Homework is confusing. Posting the final exam study guide late limited study time, affecting my performance.
This professor genuinely cares about students and wants them to understand the material. He makes it clear that he wants everyone to succeed in his class, frequently asking if the class understands after each lesson. However, despite his efforts, I found the class layout very confusing. I recommend taking this during a normal semester if you can.
I'm taking this class as a hybrid once a week . I wish I could've taken this class twice a week because it's a lot of information to be learned .
He is a great professor. You just have focus on understanding his course and work a lot on the homework. Stay engaged and listen to the lecture it is very important.
Had this professor 2 times will be taking him again in the Spring. Pay attention to homework and quizzes. Come to class. Participate in lectures. Ask questions.
His lectures can be heavy and may be hard to understand but he always makes sure that we understand before moving on. There is some extra credit you can do. His exams can be heavy but if you do the homework it shouldn't be too hard. HOMEWORK is very helpful especially during the exams and quizzes. Overall he is caring and very understanding.
CHEM 121: The professor was kind and accommodating, offering retakes and dropping lowest scores. Labs were fun, and communication was clear, but his teaching style was hard to follow and lecture-heavy. Board participation was mixed, and I disliked being asked to speak louder. Despite his support, I struggled with the format and failed the class.
Professor Gomes is an engaging lecturer who breaks down complex topics well. The class involves lectures, labs, and group work, which can be challenging but rewarding. Staying on top of the material and using resources like unstuck AI can help you succeed.
Prof. Gomes doesn't answer emails, then complains about how students don't put course code in the subject line. He also relies heavily on Pearson, and does not update Brightspace with due dates. If you cannot use another site on top of Brightspace to track your assignments skip his course. I don't doubt Prof. Gomes means well, but oh boy.
For exams and quizzes, he gives like 1 minute per question, so I would be difficult and you will feel the pressure in order to answer each question. If you're an independent and introvert person this class is not for you because the professor likes to assign groups. But if you talk to him, he'll understand.
Read the chapter beforehand to prepare for the lectures. The quizzes before the lecture may seem backward, but they have merit. His lectures are heavy with discussion and dialogue, which turns concepts that might seem foreign into those that are easier to understand. Asking questions complements the structure of his lectures.
I took his course in Spring 2024. Make sure you learn how to learn by using all the resources he gives you so that you can build a strong foundation in this class in case you want to take higher level biology courses, like Microbiology. The homework is essential to test your understanding before the actual tests.
Make sure to keep up with assignments. Don't take if you aren't majoring in bio to be honest. Very difficult if you aren't. If you do, read read read the textbook and do the homework! Very clear on deadlines.
READ EVERY CHAPTER!!! If you want to pass every exam please do your homework and read, lectures are very important and heavies, so do not miss a class, labs are easy and a good grade is guaranteed, hw and quizzes are online so are easy grades too.
The class is challenging, as it should be for preparing students for a 4-year college. I took it once a week, but if possible, take it twice a week for a better experience. Weekly quizzes (due the day before class) ensure you stay on top of the reading. Uses online quizzes, homework, and textbook—also in-person tests. TLDR: Good Professor
In my opinion, a good professor is just generally pleasant, willing to answer questions, and isn't rude to students. Prof Gomes had a sense of humor and was one of those professors with that likeable uncle/dad energy
Prof Gomes, is very lecture heavy be prepared to study most of the material on your own. He is a very kind proffesor and will give all required information needed for exams. A very fast paced class but, if you participate the class will go by smooth.
We use Pearson for Campbell Biology. The lectures don't cover everything, so you really need to read the online textbook. There are quite a few quizzes, group discussions, and homework assignments, but the professor is super helpful and open to questions.
Professor Mr. Ignatius Gomes for BIO 226 of Sciences. As his student in BIO 226 at the Wilbur Wright City of Chicago , I'm surely confident in his expertise . I have had the pleasure of working with Gomes for the past Fall 2025 semester and have witnessed his academic lectures, dedication, and intellectual curiosity firsthand.
