he was a wonderful teacher, very funny, and helped the class be enjoyable and brought in a lot of real world examples, i would definitely recommend him!
yes he was funny, he offers the quizzes as bonuses, but that doesn't help very much when the class average is a 48
He is honestly a great teacher! O-chem is a tough subject but if you go to class, read the book and study really hard, you can do fine! I have an A average right now. He is a very fair teacher as well. Def. reccommend him!!!!
I took Organic with Halinski and the first test was horrible and dropped the class. I began this semester off not too bad, plus all his quizzes are bonus, and he is very giving of bonus points. If you speak up enough and correct him during class he also give out bonus. His slides and lectures help a lot on test. Homework helps a lot too
Dr. Alabugin is a very honest and nice man. If you want to get a good grade, you must read the book VERY closely and do your homework well. His tests are tricky but doable. If it gets hard (which it will) just keep trying and don't give up!! It's totally possible to get an A it just takes LOTS of hard work and dedication. Good luck.
Dr. A is an amazing organic teacher! He makes it a point to make sure his students understand the material and pass the class! He is very approchable and offers help to ANY questions. Although the class average on the exams are low, that is just typical of an organic class. His exams are actually very doable, no surprises.
He's such a genius that I don't think he really knows how to present material to students that are struggling with the concepts
Very helpful and nice.Going to his office hrs. and doing the probs. at the end of each chapter is the way to pass his class. The class average was low but then again its organic gives bonus points here and there. You have to STUDY for this class if you want to pass, but overall good professor other may not agree, but ASK for his help and your fine.
A REALLY nice guy, really wants to help his students pass, will help you a lot in his office hrs. unclear and moves fast in lectures. exams are EXTREMELY difficult..however if avg is low, he will throw a curve. class was extremely curved bc the avg was so low. If you make an effort and work with him you will pass, but not that easy of a class
Very smart but couldnt understand him... I didnt attend class that much but had a great tutor and got a B+... He curved a lot which is always great!!! highly recommended!
awesome teacher, but you HAVE to take advantage of his office hours. he makes himself very available so make sure you go to see him. very hard class, i thought i would fail, but went to his office hours frequently and ended up with a B! i recommend him!
BEST organic teacher, hands down. He is so helpful, and really cares if you understand what is going on. He's very generous with bonus points! He gave my class a free 20 pts. added to one of our tests! If you go to him for help you can't fail. A patient, nice man and very fair. Test aren't bad if you study in depth and as him to clarify things.
He is extremely helpful and approachable.
I'm a senior and he is by far the best professor I've had here. :) Go to class and do the practice exams and putt effort into your studying and you'll be fine...he curves a lot so good grades are a high possibility!
Kind of a hard teacher at first but if you go to his office hours and do practice quizzes and exams they really help. I failed the first test barely past the second did amazing on the third and got a high B on the final and got a B in the class. DEFINITELY CURVES!!!
He has a harsh Russian accent, but as the semester goes on he is more understandable. Always go to class and recitation. He has practice tests on blackboard that are almost exactly like his real tests. Bonus points are given liberally. I have over a 100%, and I only study the practice tests. Best organic teacher at FSU hands down.
Dr. Alabugin definately does not curve. The curve depends on how much time and effort you put into all of the extra credit you do. He really cares about his students learning the material and is always a big help during his office hours. If you want an A in the class or atleast a high B, you definately need to attend office hours.
The previous posts that noted that Dr. Alabugin curves are not technically correct. He gives out a LOT of bonus points, and takes that to be a curve in itself (which is actually very generous). Very easy to talk to- just study, do practice tests, go to class, and organic does NOT have to be very hard if you put forth the effort!
By FAR the best Organic TEACHER in the Chem dept. He is always helpful, likes to challenge his students but makes things clear and always answers questions. His TA's were very helpful. Lots of bonus points on quizzes, homework, etc. Just read the book, do the homework and do practice tests. I took Hilinski as well. The ONLY teacher I recommend
He makes a boring subject less tedious. Clear lecture notes with good examples. Definitely the best Org. professor to take. Gives plenty of bonus points and TAs are very helpful.
A great professor. Alabugin inspired me to become a PHD in chemistry. A little hard to understand for some due to this accent, but nowhere near incomprehensible. He is very helpful to students who seek help and liberally offers bonus points to students who are driven(you have to put forth the effort to receive the points). He'll make you love chem.
Great professor. Read the book and do the online assignments and you should be fine. Didn't like the end of the chapter homeworks (especially since you can a buy the solutions manual and get all the answers).. seemed like busy work, but other than that, GREAT professor =)
Professor Alabugin is definately the one you want for Organic Chemistry I. His accent can be tricky if you are not used to hearing accents but he does his absolute best to translate organic chemistry from chemistry terms into common words. He even gives you small tips to help you remember the more complex terms. Definately for non-chem thinkers!
Hard subject, great professor. He honestly wants you to succeed in the class, and gives you all the tools to do so.
Although the materials covered are quite difficult for most students, he gives out A LOT of extra points such that you can get an A for the test that you actually scored a real C+ or B on. His tests are not that difficult either if you actually spend your time on the HWK problems without looking at the answer key book.
GREAT TEACHER Actually cares about the student and wants you to learn.GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS!Holds office hours after class and goes over what you learned in lecture and questions. If you study and put time into it you will do well. A lot of extra credit.Read the book.Test questions are very similar to the homework concepts. Gives extra credit quizs
Great professor, definately knows his material and conveys it well to the class. The class is hard, it is organic chemistry, but he makes it enjoyable and it is possible to get a decent grade.
Absolutely the best professor I've taken at Florida State, the class is very challenging but if you put in the effort you will pass. The homework is actually helpful and sometimes he copies and pastes directly onto his exams. Tons of extra credit through quizzes.
Alabugin is the best organic chemistry professor at FSU, but don't think the class is easy. It takes endless hours of studying to prepare for 4 tests that are so in depth it's hard to finish. Quizzes and homework is all extra credit which can make the difference between a C and an A. He's a funny and helpful guy. Keep up with the class and you'll do just fine.
Professor Alabugin really is the best Organic Professor You could have. This class is definitely not easy in any way but he does his best to make it as painless as possible. He gives alot of extra credit points which definitely helps a great deal. Hes a real nice and caring professor and always ready to help any student. Definitely take him
Best Organic Professor at FSU. Definately take him if you have the chance. Gives a lot of extra credit that will allow you to pass the class.
By far the greatest orgo teacher at FSU. Definitely take him if you want to pass organic chemistry. Gives a ton of extra credit, and works with you to help you pass. Really cares about you learning. Overall awesome professor.
His class is very difficult and so is organic chemistry so get over it. You will have to study hard. He provides very detailed lectures and lecture notes. I believe it was more than enough for a student to succeed in his class. I highly recommend taking him. Go to his office hours. They are more like supplementary lectures. Good luck.
This is a hard course-you do have to work hard on your own outside of class, read the book, get a tutor. Reads from slides & is more concerned about making slides telling you how busy he is and what he does in his life than he is about his students-WE ALL HAVE LIVES! Tests unpredictable & quizzes made by TAs so they are at different difficulty levels
Professor Alabugin is a extremely kind person and an excellent teacher. I had the privilege of having him for Orgo1, Orgo2 and the Graduate Class he teaches and he is honestly one of the best professors I have ever had. Organic Chemistry is hard and you have to put the work in but he makes it as easy as possible and cares about his students.
Dr. Alabugin is a great professor who truly cares about his students success. He has extra help sessions on the weekends, provides plenty of extra credit to boost scores and is easy to approach with questions. The class is hard no matter who you have, be prepared to study and truly learn the material. Highly recommended!
Dr.Alabugin is a great teacher. Once you get used to the russian accent, he is easy to understand and always willing to help. Offers plenty of extra credit and really wants you to do well. Orgo is hard, but I highly recomend him. Wish I had him for orgo 1 also.
Literally the most amazing professor. He's super funny, makes the lectures interesting, knows what he is talking about, he's polite and he really does care about his students. I highly recommend taking him for organic chemistry. However his exams were a challenge and somewhat disorganized, but overall great professor!
Unless you can learn with cat memes, and analogies that have nothing to do with each other, I would try to find another organic chem teacher. Tries to be funny, but I learned hardly anything in that class even when I attended every day. He's a smart guy, but can't teach worth a darn
Dr. Alabugin is a great professor, he really takes the time to be there for his students. He schedules extra office hours and provides examples of his old tests (which I highly recommend you focus on when preparing for exams). He is very smart, and his tests are hard. He really looks for critical thinking. Practice every day and he will help you.
3 exams and final with Connect Homework. Tests are extremely difficult, but they get better throughout the semester. Offers a lot of extra credit to boost your grade 10% or so. Genuinely cares about the success of his students, both in the class and in life. He is willing to go out of his way to help you. Go to office hours, he is extremely helpful
I took Orgo 2 with Dr. Alabugin roughly 3 years ago and I still can't stop talking about what a great professor he was. Never got around to rating him back then but definitely the best professor I have ever had. He's interesting, he's funny, the subject is hard so you can't expect for a miracle teacher but he's the best you can get.
Dr. Alabugin is probably the smartest chemist on FSU's campus. He is extremely helpful every office hour and is genuinely interested in your ideas. The tests are hard its organic chemistry.. But if you go to office hours and study the book and practice problems it is not that bad. He cares if students are understanding the material and applying it.
Still taking this class, and I'm only writing this review because the rate my professor is SO WRONG. I was expecting a great professor who gave practical exams. I get that this is Orgo 2 and it will be hard regardless, but I think something is up if the average student is failing.... especially if you won't do anything about it. Beware.
Dr. Alabugin is someone who truly cares about his students. He gives a lot of extra credit and will make compromises for the better of the class. He wants you to learn organic chemistry and be able to connect everything together. If you don't practice several days before exams and get left behind, you won't do well on the exams, it's just a fact.
Alabugin is the nicest prof I've ever had. His exams are extremely difficult, but they get easier throughout the semester because the material becomes easier. He gives so much bonus and even changed out 3rd exam to be /100 instead of /120. I'd say just stick through it because my exam grade went from a 50% to over 100%. Super approachable teacher.
Dr. Alabugin is such a great professor. His exams are INCREDIBLY difficult, however. They definitely require you study days, or a week in advance. Lots of quizzes to help your grade, bonus points on every exam for whoever can answer them. He truly does care about his students. SO easy to talk to and extremely encouraging towards his students.
I would recommend taking Igor for Organic Chemistry. I took Hilinski for Orgo 1 & although Igor's exams are WAY harder he does care a lot about his students. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. He really wants students who try to do well. His bonus quizzes brought my grade up from a D to an A-. His quizzes do require work and they are not easy points given.
Alabugin left a very lasting impression on me. He really strives to bang Orgo 2 into your head. He cares about his students immensely. His exams are brutal but fortunately all of his quizzes are all extra credit, which brought me from a D to a B+. If he still does TopHat for homework, I recommend the drawing questions as a good study tool!
Yo!! This man is the best!! He loves cats and donuts!! He is extremely nice and truly cares about the success of his students. All of his quizzes are extra credit and offers other opportunities for extra credit. His test are hard AF, but it's orgo 2 suck it up! I wish I could hug him RN #igorsangels
Alabugin is a gem! I took Orgo 1 at UCF, so I was unprepared for Orgo at FSU. Orgo 2 is hard, and Alabugin's tests don't make them any easier, but DO ALL THE EXTRA CREDIT + ASSIGNMENTS. Doing virtually all the extra credit, getting an A on tophat & bacon, and doing ok on the quizzes brought me to a C+. He really cares about everyone! And cats!
Best professor in my 4 years at FSU. He genuinely wants you to succeed and if you make an effort, he will reciprocate. I suggest going to office hours and go to every lecture, as he has some underlying humor. The tests are REALLY difficult, but it is one of the hardest classes available, so prepared to study every night. Overall, a gem.
Hands down best chemistry professor. Tests are extremely hard but you have plenty of extra credit opportunities. You will be prepared for the MCAT thats for sure lol.
I took Albugin for organic Chemistry 2, and was AMAZING. Orgo 2 is extremely difficult no matter who you take it with, but this teacher cares so much fro his students and wants you to pass, he also makes sure you are actually understanding and learning the material. A lot of home work but if you study and dedicate your time, you will be fine!
Igor is a great professor and you can really tell he cares about his students. He takes time out of his lectures to go over specific problems and make sure we all get it. He uses memes (haha) to relate organic chemistry to us. He shows how this material is relevant in our lives and makes it more enjoyable to learn.
Dr. Alabugin is the best professor I've ever had. He is wicked smart, cares so much about every student, and makes orgo manageable. He does practice problems, hand-writes notes, uploads all the powerpoints, and gives like 100pts of extra credit. The final was tough.
Dr. Alabugin is one of the best professors I've ever had. He explains the material well, and he's genuinely kind. His quizzes don't count for a grade, only extra credit and he requires two types of online homework, which can really boost your grade. He's understanding and he incorporates cat pictures into every PowerPoint! Also, go to office hours!
So, Alabugin is a good enough professor and he has really good TA's that help you master the material in recitation so go to that. He uses cat memes to get topics across and it's really funny. All quizzes are extra credit and that helps your grade A TON. tests are super hard, but homework and BACON help boost your grade.
BEST TEACHER HANDS DOWN. I took his orgo 2 class fall semester (17) of my senior year, and learned more than I ever have! His exams are difficult (orgo 2 will never be a walk in the park) but he genuinely cares about his students and wants you to understand what you're doing. LOVED HIM
Hardest tests Ive ever taken. The guys a genius, but I think that makes him a bad teacher. He thinks its easy, and it irritates him that we dont get it on the first run through. Not nearly enough practice materials, cold and distant outside class. Thank god for the TAs. Keeps saying he wont curve but more than half the class is failing so...
Ok I know every rating is positive, trust me, thats why all my classmates and i have him now.. but his tests are impossible, he does not prepare you nor give you materials to prepare. He wasn't here for so many classes & had "guest speakers". there's no graded homework. quizzes are bonus but impossible. more than half the class is failing. don't.
Professor Alabugin is one of the best science professors I have had at FSU. As someone who had a terrible experience with an Orgo 1 professor, Alabugin made Orgo 2 much more enjoyable. Yes, the class is difficult, but you need to be willing to work hard because the material is hard no matter who you have. He cares about his students learning!
Alabugin cares tremendously about his students, he even curved an exam by 20 points. Organic Chemistry 2 is the hardest class I have ever taken, and no professor is going to make it easy. However Alabugin cares and is extremely intelligent. Compared to other chemistry professors he is the best. He has provided practice tests and 2 practice finals.
Dr. Alabugin is hands down the best organic chemistry professor at FSU. Organic chemistry is not easy to learn, but if you put in the time and dedication you will do well in this class. Dr. Alabugin cares a lot about his students and he will do whatever he can to help you along the way,
Dr. Alabugin wants you to succeed, but success is still earned through diligent work. Review Orgo I before starting. Stay engaged with material and try to have fun with it. Reach out when help is needed! There is room for failure and growth. Orgo is difficult but success is very attainable! Amazing prof! Most challenging and rewarding class ever.
Amazing professor and best choice for Orgo 2. Its Orgo; it's going to be tough and almost all orgo classes are going to class averages of 70% or less. His exams are very hard (average 50%), but he also gives around 130 extra credit points(class is only 500). 44 kids got an A thanks to his curve/EC. Dont let these reviews fool you, hes very generous
These reviews are hilarious. Dr. Alabugin missed class a total of 2 times to attend a research conference for his work. He had Dr. Kearlyanother Orgo2 prof substitute his class. There were TONS of extra credit opportunities. I would not receive a high average score (maybe a C or a B average) and I ended with a 99% because of extra credit.
I was no "star student" and this professor took the time to help me! I went from an F to an A over the course of the semester. There was ample opportunity for improvement and better understanding. The difference was in the way I studied and the effort I made (strategy), and the way I stayed engaged had much to do with his teaching and feedback.
Orgo II is going to be difficult, but Alabugin gives you the tools necessary to succeed. make! reaction! maps! like he tells you to from the beginning. office hours are also super helpful. he also has a lot of bonus points opportunities that can take you from a C to an A. if you keep up with reviewing, youll be fine.
Dr. Alabugin is by far one of the best Organic Chemistry teachers in the department. His accent is very hard to understand but he is an actual genius when it comes to orgo. As in any chem class, you will need to study regardless but he drops one of the exams and gives a ton of extra credit in order for you to pass.
His exams are ridiculous the averages were 50-60s. The quizzes are all bonus but they are not easy bonus points. The lectures don't prepare you for the exams. He barely shows practice problems in class. You have to teach yourself everything or invest on tutoring to do well. He expects you to know so much information even the TA's/LA's are shocked
BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! He offers so much extra credit and if you do well on the extra credit then you will get to add to overall grade. all the extra credit equates to one test grade. i finished with a 365.5/350 as long as you put in time to know what reagents do youll be super successful. take if you can. he is amazing
There is a bunch of extra credit so that helps a lot! He is a nice guy and cares about you understanding and is willing to help any way he can. PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! if you do not practice you will not succeed! Problems from the book are useful to practice. I recommend him because he drops one exam grade plus all that extra credit.
Dr. Alabugin is a great professor, and knows what he is talking about; however, this might be a downside, especially for someone who doesn't do well in Chemistry. He lectures as if he is speaking to his colleagues, so it's very hard to understand. The ec is nice, but you might find yourself having to relearn stuff so you can better understand it.
Alabugin is a kind brilliant person, but he has a hard time simplifying it enough for someone with no experience to learn it. His lectures are not helpful and he does no practice probs so tests are always a slap in the face, and the tests are most of your grade except for the EC which is often too complicated to do well on. TAs are unreachable.
Definitely would take him again. He's very generous with extra credit. Orgo 1 is not a walk in the park so you will have to study! Take advantage of recitations and bonus quizzes.
Dr. Alabugin is by far one of the best chemistry instructors at FSU. Orgo 1 is a challenging class, but going to lectures, recitations, and office hours helped a lot. He was very kind and helpful during office hours - he makes you write mechanisms on the board. All the quizzes were bonus points, so don't miss them! Take him if you can!
Professor Alabugin is probably the best orgo professor at fsu. With that being said, everyone should take him if you can since he is the only professor who offers extra credit in the form of quizzes. He doesn't curve but the quizzes make up for it. Material tested is based on what is expected of u to learn. Obviously the material can be hard.
He is a great person I felt like he was always receiving awards. I recommend attending class, especially sitting in front because he helps you out with questions! Also, take advantage of the TAs and his office hours. If you study for the bonus quizzes you will have a good opportunity for success.
His lectures are disorganized, he doesn't speak about the concepts clearly, and he explains them by writing them sloppily on the white board to the side of the room. Exams averaged 50, and only extra credit are ridiculously hard quizzes. Ratings are high because they're from when he gave exams online/in multiple choice, not the case anymore.
The extra credit is JUST ENOUGH for you to skate by. I'm trying to figure out where these good reviews are coming from, because his exams are impossible, and he expects us to learn things automatically because we are Chemistry and Biochemistry majors. He talks more about Nobel Prizes than the actual course content and wonders why we all fail.
Slides follow txtbk but were clearly made a while ago & don't communicate w tablet well. Near illegible handwriting on board. Impossible tests, disorganized notes. No assigned hw. Do the rxn maps. Don't slack when studying for ec quizzes. Practice tests formatted nearly identically to actual test (not true for final). Sink or swim class.
The review that called it a "sink or swim" class is so real. Orgo is no joke and 2211 is significantly more difficult than 2210, but you should expect that and prepare accordingly. Dr Alabugin wants his students to succeed but he by no means hands the grade out. READ before the lecture.TAKE ADVANTAGE of every e/c quiz. Leavethismanaloneandstudy!!!!
Alabugin is the best professor I have had so far at FSU. Yes his exams are very difficult, yes his EC quizzes are difficult, yes the lectures are fast paced but you are taking an incredibly difficult class that requires lots of work. Show up, ask questions, learn the material before class, and study very hard! He is so kind and always wants to help
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is an AWFUL teacher. Yes, he gives extra credit quizzes but he doesn't teach you anything on the quiz. You have to teach yourself everything. Take anyone but him. He spent most of his time focusing on his research work and bragging about it rather than teaching us the actual material.
He was absent a lot and even when he was present, his lectures were dense and base-level. His LAs and TAs were his saving grace, he passes a lot of the work off to them. Only passed by extra credit and self-taught material. Exam median fell in the 60s every exam, wouldn't recommend and final is credit heavy (43% of grade).
He does give extra credit quizzes every recitation, but they were all extremely difficult and people often could only manage to get very few points on them. I found his office hours pretty helpful he is often happy to help in his office hours same with his LA's. His test though was extremely difficult and often had a class average of 60%.
Please DO NOT take this professor if you don't have to. People always say that teachers don't want to see you succeed but he genuinely do not want his students to pass. He couldn't care less for his students and it shows. He speeds through lectures and test are impossible. Extra credit quizzes are hard to get points. Overall avoid him at all costs.
Genuinely the worst professor I've ever had in my college career. Seems to set out to make you fail; class is a ‘flipped classroom' where you're expected to teach yourself the material which he chides you for not knowing already. Tests and ‘bonus' quizzes are impossible; you can barely get a point on them. Avoid like the PLAGUE.
Dr. Alabugin tried so hard to be warm and fuzzy: his Power Points were endlessly strewn with kittens, etc. He was nice overall, but I'll never forget the way he acted when I accidentally showed up to his office hours on the wrong day. He just seemed so angry about it! Luckily it didn't affect my grade. Pay attention to the schedule :)
