I LOVED THIS GUY :) He rules....take his class and get an A :)
he is easy to understand
He is really good
Makes his best to explain material to students
He explains stuff very well, although he has a strong russian accent. Good prof.
he is realllly goood!!!!
VERY EASY TESTS & EXAMS
This guy is the best
He does not know how to teach stats...horrible accent and CANNOT explain himself
Worst teaches I have had thus far in my University career
An Awful teacher in every way
he taught really well....although he had a slight accent...he was understandable
He's awful, ignore the other comments, he should never be allowed to teach again
Repreats himself a lot..overall: reasonable tests, teaches you what you need to
He's a good teacher, even though I still failed his class.
Has no clue on how to teach a course. Just reads out of the text. Easy course, if you already know your material from before, or else you better buy the text.
Good prof. I liked him
this guy is joker, wanna know the secret of getting A+: get previous year's test. LOL this guy never changes the test :) but he can't teach :(
1190 was a breeze. Poliakov didn't teach much, but his tests were simple. I only went to three classes and got an A. He cant teach stats though. Make sure you have a friend who can help and get the previous exams. His repitition is wierd, but helpful.
He is a good prof with an original teaching style. I liked him. If you read the text- you should have no problems with the course.
Should not be teaching this kind of math course. (fundamentals of math) No respect for students, lectures a complete waste of time. Everything right from the textbook.
I have had him for 2 courses. Although his tests and assignments are not difficult he doesn't teach. he just copies from the text book and even then makes lots of mistakes. He has no enthusiasm for the material.
Poliakov's the greatest. Yeah, he shouts a lot and he goes berserk if you don't pay attention, but he only wants you to learn calculus, unlike other profs. Tests are not too bad. He's a funny guy, take him for first year calculus.
I don't know why other ppl rated him as average...I personally think he's the best math prof I've had in my university career. He explains well, and he makes really good notes on the board... the average in 1190 was really high when I was in 1st year.
I think he is a great professor at York! His tests are very straight forward, make sure you do your work and ya will get an A/A+...He's very helpful when ya need his help!!!
He doesn't teach, takes the stuff right from the text and for his tests gets the hardest examples from the book. plus its so hard to understand him
very fair teacher, does his best to help, yes he uses examples from the book, but his tests are straight foward, and no hidden bs. probably one of th ebest math profs york has
Showing up to class, unecessary as it may seem, helps ALOT, especially when all you need is three or four percent to push your final grade up to the next letter. He's willing to help a face he recognizes. Super nice guy and very fair.
He teaches right from the book, which has disadvantages in a course like probability. His tests/exams are also reflected from the book & his old exams. He is very repetitive in his teaching and not generous towards helping outside of class(office hrs, etc)
an amazing prof and a very nice guy
The best math proff I've had so far. He takes the time to explain things very well.
OMG!! who can understand this guy??? He's still a FOB(fresh off the boat) he typical russian instructor, strong accent, imporper grammer.. But makes me laugh in class, he's gona catch me one day!
Horrible. Lectures make material more confusing than it needs to be; easier to simply learn from the book. Couldn't write legibly on the board if his life depended on it. Test questions very unclear and confusing.
I'd like to share some quotes with you: "its obviously guys, you follow me??" ; "sooner or later we get the right answer!" finaly he always emphsizes that "we'll laugh together after the TESTS!!"
"oik".one of d words he uses after evry q.no its not "oik".dont understand wht he is tryin 2 say.very confused himself.when asked a q he looks clueless 4 setime.tests r tuf.evrythin he says is from the txtbk even the examples!might as well just read the bk why go to his class.
Easy exams but a little unclear on some aspects of the course... needs other examples rather than the ones we see in the text book. I must say the text book was pretty good ;).
Teaches the history of mathematics ! Horrible teacher, doesnt know to talk only shouts and fights. Is anti cell Phones !
Very hard to understand him clearly..for some reason he tends to repeat useless information over and over.." today we will begin with the function, the function , as it approaches..uh approaches.." Only uses examples in the textbook to teach his lessons. I
May be a good prof in math courses but very bad in 2560. Easy test but the common exam killed us. Other sections found exam easy while we struggled. To me, he didn't know what is important and what is not! Wondering why the dept did just let him teach math courses and keep him away from 2560!
this guy is wired, his test is confused and does not have something with his lecture.class is boring and nonsense.
its very hard course because he dont give what he teach in the exam, but it can be easy for who has the his previous test. All the student are paying money for york university and their trying their best to get good education at york university. But if this professor lazy and give the same test every yr, it not fair, he have to do something.
quoting the prof "guys guys guys, i hope you all pass the exam" and guess what happened after that I FAILED! i went into the exam with a B average and i ended up getting an E.Midterm was okay because it was marked quite easily, however the final was KILLER.Our section it was mostly Ds or Fs in the end doesnt care about students at all. what a prick
Although some students did not like him, I found him very good professor. One time I asked him something outside of class about information, not relevant to the class I was in, and even despite it he spent 40 minutes helping me. He really helped me a lot, and he really cared, and I really appreciated that. He is the best!
Not that hard, but he is unorganized, started using the newer edition of the text in the middle of the term. Gave long tests, wrote messy...but he did seem willing to help.
Is he teaching the same course as the other 2 sections? The exam is so different from what he set in tests. It is very hard to follow his lectures.
This teacher does not belong in a university. Maybe he is a genius but he sure cannot teach anything. Listening to him you would think you are in a market somewhere. He will repeat himself the whole class, stuff like "here we have x + y, x + y, x+ y" and so on. When someone asks a question, he puts them down like they should already know.
Hard as HELL!!
GENIUS...AND VERY HELPFUL...ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS...LOVES MATH
I spoke to the math department. He is not the usual prof for this class.. he teaches 3rd yr math. It is Yorks fault for allowing him to teach us. This guys needs to stay in 3rd yr courses where people have a background in math. Horrible experience.
MANY STUDENTS WHO HAVE TO TAKE THIS COURSE DONT HAVE STRONG BACKGROUND IN MATH, YET YORK ASSIGNS THIS PROF WHO TEACHES ADVANCED MATH! HE ASSUMES PEOPLE KNOW IT ALL!
At first i didn't think i would understand him through his accent but eventually i got used to him. Great sense of humour. Very Fair.
absolutely amazing! I learned so much! You guys are not used to being pushed a little, but you get more then what you pay for!
Well, you definitely wont get any surprises when it comes to the exams set by this prof but if ur finals are joint with another class... you'll only get what he taught cos his tests are exact duplicates of his examples in class. You could almost memorize it! (varies) he favoritizes ppl of his own background! he was talkin to them during a test!
Didn't know what to think of him most of the time. I was annoyed how he keeps repeating that he "understands us" and then gives a pretty tough (or so I thought) final exam. About 40% of the class did not write the final. They should've alerted Health Canada for a possible epidemic...
Great prof. I got an A in his class and was only expecting a C. Would definately recommend him to students.
Good prof, had him for 2 stats classes. Just be ready to be picked on to answer questions, especially if you look disinterested or asleep.
first day of class i was sooo frustrated cuz he has an accent and repeats the same sentance several times. eventually got used to it and realized hes not bad afterall. he will try to do all he can to help u understand that material, in and out of class.
He is a funny guy. His explanation is pretty clear although he has accent. As long as you do the book exercises, you can get a good mark easily.
The best math proff I've had so far. He takes the time to explain things very well.Dr. poliakov was the proof who have finally made me to do not hate math . he is a great professor with excellent skills.he would repeat the problems maybe 10 times untill everyone undrestand it. it was agreat experience with professor poliakov.and very fair tests
Good teacher, tests are straight forward. Questions come right out of the book so if you do all the questions then you will get a good grade.
Goes through the material too quickly and spends too much time repeating himself, instead of doing other examples.
I have taken two courses with Dr. Poliakov (MATH 1013 & MATH 3242). I wish there were more professors like him. He goes above and beyond to help students. If you do the questions and go to class you can get a good grade. He has a great sense of humour. BEST EXPERIENCE. I would rate him 6 out of 5 if I could!
BEST PROF!!!!! He is really helpful and dedicated! For those of you who say he is hard: WAKE UP: we're in University, what do you expect?!?! Do the questions and go to class! His accent is not that bad! You get used to it. Very funny guy.
Great professor overall. His lectures are well planned and intelligently delivered. He's Always available for help. His course would help you to build quite solid fundamental for further math course. If you think math as somehow little dry topic, he will make it more interesting. Also great evaluation. An absolutely OUTSTANDING PROFESSOR.
The guys doesn't know how to teach! HE just copies the book on the board, and even then does a very poor job. Any time he starts a new material his regular quote is: "question is..." anyway stupid prof.
Very Good
He makes the subject interesting! what a tallent you have to have to make Math interesting!! He is fun and always available for extra help, and it IS of great help! just if you do fall behind its a tuff course to get back in track. However overall he motivated me not to give up, and even though I failed, I will take the course again! :)
Good prof. Nice guy. Take his class, attend classes, do homework, and you will get a good grade.
he's an OK prof but his teachin method is difficult to follow, they goes really fast, often confuses you.. ignore his class if you can
The guy is great! the course is hard indeed but if you go to his office hours, he is willing to spend 4 hours explaining until you understand the material. he is worth taking the course so go for it
As a returning mature student, this is one of my first courses. I found his teaching style very effective. You will learn a lot by taking a class from this Professor. He is very knowledgeable about the subject matter he is teaching. Professor Igor is very approachable for any questions or help you may need, he makes time for you until you understan
Great Professor, he was my teacher in math 1190 winter semester 2008. Very good approach from the very beginning of the course, well organised lectures, straight forward tests, available to students. Wide knowledge in mathematics helps him to connect problems in discrete with other fields of math. Basically, if you go to lectures and do assigned pr
I took three courses with Prof. Poliakov, Math 1310 in Winter 2006, Math 2310 in summer 2006 and Math 2030 in fall 2007. He is very knowledgable and his lectures were very clear. He was very helpful outside the classroom. The test were fair. I would definitely recommend taking a course with this professor.
Professor Poliakov was very genuine and helpful both inside and outside of class where he was very willing to help with questions whenever he was available. His teaching method was to the point and effective in preparing students for exams. I learned a great deal of knowledge from him and I rate him very highly. Very approachable and knowledgeable.
His most memorable saying: "Thats how it is, thats how it is!"
I'm very surprised to see all the positive ratings that this professor has received. I did not like this professor at all. He is very disorganized and unclear with the administration of the course (i.e. test dates, test material, important homework exercises, having an updated website). In that respect, everything he announced was very unformal.
Copies from book to board, useless lecture, exams contain material not included in book, avoid him at all costs. His tests are 50 minutes length but you never get to finish and theres even less chance to go back and correct something you did wrong...
Has an accent which can be difficult to understand at times. 9's are written as g's. "T" is pronounced as "time." He mostly only goes through the examples given in the text. He doesn't give simple questions on the test. Responds to e-mail quickly. Tests are returned quickly.
He is an ooook prof, it could have been worse. He has an accent which will take a while to get used to. Responds fast to email, and helpfull during office hours. BEWARE of his exams and tests, Because none of the questions you will see in the book are even related to the ones in the exams.
I really believe he is an awesome prof. He knows the material, he explains it (you only have to have ears and not sleep during lectures), he is VERY approachable and interested if students understand what is taught. The exams are not hard if you practice problems from the book. I should add that he is one of York's finest professors.
don't rate a professor by his accent. half of the people at york have an accent, so what? the important thing is that he knows his stuff and is a good prof
Doesnt have a website, never responds to emails, reads straight from the book and tests are different from excercises in book and assignments. Useless class, AVOID AT ALL COSTS, terrible teacher, terrible english, terrible person. Be warned.
The best prof I've had so far. For those of you dissing him, try studying for once and don't expect to be spoon-fed everything.
Stats with him is useless, better off learning from the book. (I'm not even sure if I got the couse code correct...)
Don't know what the deal is with those who hate him so much... Repeats the important points, uses humour, keeps you awake at 9pm - in a math class! Tough but not unnecessarily so. Let us use formula sheets on the tests until the department made him stop. Good prof, but you have to work hard. Study hard and you'll do well.
I took 3 classes with him. He teaches step by step and emphasizes the important points that the students need to remember. Overall he is a good prof. and open to answer questions out of the class.Th e assignments and tests are helpfull when preparing for the final. If you study and attend the class he will help you to learn.Great Prof for learner
never take math 1505 with him during summer term! neverrrrr.....i retook this course in summer with this prof and did really bad!!!! the exam was killer hard!!!!!
One of the best Math professors at York. Clear, step by step, enthusiastic, fair, approachable. I learned a lot from him. Thanks Igor!
Dr. Poliakov is a great professor, very approachable, knowledgeable, and for the best part, he know how to teach. Go to class and do your practice questions and you will succeed. His tests are average, not easy and not hard. Just do your homework.. Very good professor..
Extreamly aprochable, makes sure students understand material, emphisises important points. Only bad thing is that he uses examples right from the book instead of making his own. BUT HE IS AN EXCELLENT TEACHER, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Awesome prof! very approachable and helpful! Dont fall asleep in his class or at least sit in the back rows if you do. Make friends with him and you'll do well. If you want an A+ do all of the questions in the textbooks and repeat!
This prof is easy as long as you study off of his notes and examples he gives. It doesn't hurt to be friends with him.
He is not good at all...Don't take any courses with him....his tests and exams are very hard...
I had Professor Poliakov a few years ago when i was a student. He was an excellent prof. Followed the textbook closely. No tricks or surprises on tests. Always willing to help students. If you want to learn, and want good grades, he's highly recommended!!!
Very laud and clear, he makes his point and provide several examples. He use to give 10 min breaks in long classes. He has an EXTREME Russian accent in his english and sometimes even mix up some English words with Russian! You are likely to learn a few Russian words at the end of his lectures.
He knows well but doesnt teach well. I like his idea of weekly quiz becuz it prepares you well. I would suggest avoid taking course with him simply for one reason - his tests & exam are much harder than other proffs .
He tries to explain things in class as much as he can. Be ware exams are difficult. Summer 2013 Final exam was 10 problems of which 9 were theory. None of the homework problems were on the exams(I did them all). It seems like this course was designed to Fail students.
Great guy but ill prepared to teach a class of freshmen a subject as difficult as this. Advantage:, lectures come straight from the textbook, quizzes and tests look like they come from the book//Disadvantages: thick accent, difficult to follow his teachings, textbook is AWFUL!! Read & re-read textbook. MAKE UR OWN NOTES then seek his help.
At first he seems like a hard prof, but in the end, he turns out to be the greatest prof ever
I don't what worst, his accent, his writing or his yelling. The only good thing is that he was following the book and posted exactly what units he was going to cover. The one thing I hated the most about him is that he would yell while teaching stuff which made him seem very aggressive, but he is still a good person.
class is boring as hell; his accent and way of teaching doesnt make it any more interesting; however if you do the homework you'll do fine on his quizzes - all the questions come out of the HWK questions or are somewhat similar; final was okay if you did all the problems in the book
Discrete Math itself is very hard and P.Igor's Russian accent makes it even harder. It is very hard to get something from his teaching, you'd better be prepared. Most of his quizes, tests and final questions are from the book but still it is very hard because every section has around 100 question and for final you have to go through 1000 questions.
Basically just poorly translated the textbook into broken English. Thanks for nothing Igor the terrible.
Fun and interesting course. Professor has understandable accent and puts an effort into teaching. Do your homework and go to office hours if you're not clear with anything and you should have no problem getting an A.
Very good teacher. Takes a while to get used to the accent. Do all the homework questions. Follows completely out of the textbook. If you go to class you won't even need to look at the textbook! Makes an effort into making sure his students understand everything.
do all the questions and you will be good ... midterms and quizzes straight from the text book ..!
Hi simply suck in speaking English and speaking in general. He simply has no place to call himself a subject matter expert, professor, instructor, and most of all a teacher. He cant teach at all fellows!
He knows his Math but with all due fairness he really can't read, write, and understand English.
Best thing about him is that he knows his stuff and can deliver it well. Very helpful. Always there for you if you are persistent to work hard and do well on the course. Do your assigned set of problems, YES, ALL OF THEM (even and odd, both). Tests are hard and usually consist of the tricky questions from the practice set. Attend all lectures.
I agree that he knows his stuff but only he can understand what he is saying. He speaks alien. I am Russian myself and I know his thick Russian- English accent is very hard to understand. I got a good grade due to my interest and it was a hard fought battle for me. His lectures are tortures. But he is there to help you. Good luck to all of you.
Dats why, dats why, thick accent, messy handwriting, talks way too fast. Better off with the book. Weekly quizzes can be helpful though. Do well on the tests to pass. Going to class is optional.
I wouldn't recommend him because his thick Russian accent makes it hard to understand what he is saying. The txtbk and solutions book is a DEFINITE NEED as he mostly chooses the harder questions in his tests. He also uses examples directly from the textbook, which makes attendance to lectures optional. The key to success is to work extremely hard.
I didn't understand much during the lectures. If you miss one class, you will have no idea what he's doing in the next. Very hard tests and doesn't do much examples in class. very difficult course on the whole. Didn't like it at all
Positive: - Professor knows his stuff very well. - Is helpful and accessible for students - Test questions are similar to homework Negative: - Marking is tough (gives opportunity to discuss tests though)
He can be a good researcher but He is not a teacher at all
get the book , use the book , be the book .
Do your homework and you will be golden! If you can memorize homework, even better! For most of this courses he gives 3 midterms and a final.
Best professor ever! He cares about his students and really want to teach unlike many professors at York who really don't care about there students. He is always in his office helping students even after extended hours. He does a lot of examples in class and explain everything you need to know in details. Definitely would talk him again.
Lectures and all examples are directly as in textbook.... explains very quickly, hard to understand. Really hard tests where questions come from chapters that weren't assigned for that test. Not enough time to complete tests, do not take 8:30 timeslot.
Best prof ever! He always give questions from textbook to prepare for the test and Exams! He lectured the examples directly from the textbook to emphasize the knowledge of discrete maths! He is always in his office during extended hours to assist you if you are "STRUGGLING". He always cares about his students! Definitely will take him again!
He is truly amazing prof! He always care about his students especially he wants his students to pass with good grade that they deserved! He always give the examples directly from textbook to show how the logic works. Do his suggested homework questions from book then you will be fine for tests and exam!
I had Igor poliakov for 3 courses.... his lectures are easy to follow and he is very clear... if you want to pass his course with high mark do all the homework from the book ..... he is very helpful when you approach him.... Great prof
He is truly amazing professor! He always care about his students. His lecture was truly super interesting plus he explained so slowly and crystal clear. He is very friendly and outgoing person. He always email quickly if you have questions. His tests were based on homework questions that he assigned. Would love to take him again!
You probably won't be able to understand him very well for the first few lectures, but you get used to it. READ THE TEXTBOOK. IT IS YOUR BEST FRIEND. The questions on test, quizzes and exams are usually from the textbook homework as well as random examples from class. Pay attention and write everything down. And memorize.
This professor has clear logical lectures with relevant examples. Assigned questions really prepare you for the test. Make use of office hours or ask questions after class when struggling. He is very helpful and will approach the explanation from different angles. Overall, it was a great experience and I highly recommend taking his class.
He is a good teacher. Always helpful if you ask him. Stays after hours to help whomever needs it.
Intially, his lectures can be confusing. However if students preserve on, they will get use to his style of teaching and speech and can understand his lectures better. Moreover the textbook is good. As long students attend the class, they will know which part of the textbook is covered and which part can be skipped.
He is a very good professor ... if u have any question he waits until the very last student .... very helpful .... answers emails very quickly .... tests came right from the homework exercises .... so do ur hw on regular basis !!!!! just one or two questions that were not from the homework ..... would recommend him for 1505
Math can be overwhelming but professor Poliakov is one of those profs that's always there to help. ASK QUESTIONS AND GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS!!! He makes sure to take as much time as you need for you to understand the concept. Never rushes you. Just try! If you do the homework questions, you'll notice the tests are VERY fair. Definitely recommend!
Professor Poliakov is a very good professor who knows his criteria well. He was very helpful and compassionate for his students and was always there to listen if you need help with concepts. He explains really well and ensures students are on the right path. I recommend Dr Poliakov, he saved my semester totally!
This course is fairly difficult as he did not bell curve at all and the concepts discussed in class were not clear. The tests that Prof. Poliakov writes are extremely tricky and can easily drop your grade. I suggest attending class daily and doing as many practice questions you can, essentially keeping your grade as high as possible before the exam
He gives really hard test, makes it really hard to pass. Reads out of the textbook. Choose another prof.
Has a thick accent, so hard to understand until you get used to it. Will try to help you if you ask for it, but sometimes confuses you even more... Follows the book completely.. Does bell-curve if the class isn't doing too well.
Not a tough grader. Tests are similiar to in-class examples and text bokk exercises. Has accent but dont bother. Will bell-curve marks if needed. Subject is hard.
Great professor, and tests are fair if you do homework. Good course if you work hard.
Pr Igor Poliakov is amazing !!!
Mr. Poliakov seems to genuinely care for students' success, but I found his accent was just too difficult to understand. As time went on, I'd hoped I'd overcome the language barrier, but no such luck. Because of this, you'll definitely need the textbook and online aides to pass.
If you do every question from the homework, and pay attention to him in class YOU WILL PASS. If the class averages are also horrible, he will bellcurve. Great professor, Hard tests.
Knows what he's talking about and can teach, hilarious also.
He is the worst math teacher so far at york. His accent is not understandable and he is disorganized he is all over the place you won't know what is he talking about. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS
BAD JUST VERY BAD
Not a tough grader. Get ready to read the text. Exam Questions appear from text. Attendance Not Mandatory. Bad Accent. Course is hard.
A good professor that cares for student.
Prof. Poliakov isn't the greatest in the world, but compared to anyone else that usually teaches MATH2030, he's literally a saint. Take it with him, if possible.
Worst ascent ever. I took 3 classes with him but yet could'nt figure out his ascent. He knows the stuff and also tries to convey it to the students but I guess thts not enough. He just rewrites the material given in textbook and most of the times never even clearifies wht he is writing. He has worst hand writing. Sometimes insults the students too.
I found it hard in the first class to understand his accent, but it did get better as the sem progressed. He is a good teacher and a very nice man. Exam and midterm were long, but VERY FAIR. Many of the questions came straight from in-class examples and exercises in the textbook. Would take another course with him.
Horrible Prof
Fasts forwards through each section. He completes a section per lecture and copies down exact same examples as the textbook during the lecture. Teacher needs to be really patient with a course like differentials, he is complete opposite of that. Disappointing.
i dont understand his accent
Great prof, explains the course right out of the textbook. Must come to class to pass but he'll be able to explain well. You have to get used to the Russian accent but in a week you'll be fine. Became one of my favorite profs for math.
Not good.
HORRIBLE! Tough grader. He is the type of prof that does not want you to do well. If he did, he would not make his tests impossible to get a good grade or even pass. If you have the choice to take any of his courses with ANY OTHER PROF, do it. Do NOT take any course with him unless you absolutely have to.
This professor is absolutely terrible. The worst prof I've ever had so far. Terrible accent, skips through sections, very difficult tests. Whatever you do, DON'T take a course with him.
Igor is actually a very good professor if you decide to put the time and effort into learning the concepts taught by him. Like most classes, if you put good effort into studying, you will do well. His accent was a bit tricky on the first day, but after a while you get used to him speaking. He truly cares for your education if you focus in class.
Poliakov takes some getting used to at first, but after the first couple of weeks his course is thoroughly enjoyable. He genuinely cares about his students and he is very knowledgeable on what he is teaching. Overall, he is a funny guy and a caring one for the students who want to learn.
Test are really hard. You don't understand what he is saying in class. Waste of a prof, super hard grader. Not worth it.
Igor isn't a bad person, he is just a horrible professor. He is only approachable if he is in a good mood. Very hard to understand what he is saying, tough to sit through class without losing concentration.
The only person that want to fail you is you your self. Probably, probably the best professor I ever have, I will repeat this, the best! Every weak you must do hundred questions, hundred questions.
Igor Poliakov is a very intriguing and interesting professor with a good sense of humour. He makes his lectures very clear and provides numerous examples. without doubt he was the brains back in Soviet Russia. very great professor!
He looks very scary and angry but he's actually a nice guy, not the most friendly though. He isn't the best professor, his lectures can get confusing, but I found his tests to not be that bad, most of them were similar to the webassign/textbook questions. He may not be good at explaining but he tries.
"The only person who wants to fail you is you yourself." Probably the lines you will hear a lot before and after the tests. I had taken two Applied Calculus classes with him (MATH 1013 and MATH 1014). NEVER Replies to your E-mails. Teaches brilliantly. Excellent examples. Very knowledgeable. Concentrate in his class and the tests will be easy.
terrible, this is the worst prof i have ever met. weird accent. and just copy the textbook in the class. you won't be happy to take the course with him. even you got A+ on homework. the tests will fail you any way.
Not the best Professor. Not the worst. He tries but most times isn't prepared for class. He tells you what will come on tests exams etc. Usually takes test and exam questions from textbook and examples done in class.
Teacher is fine, he is very honest, blunt, and straightforward. During lectures he covers the basics (mainly textbook examples). Tests are challenging so use the textbook for practice. Weekly assignments can be time consuming but are fairly easy.
"The only person who wants to fail you is you yourself." I appreciate him and saying always this sentence in class.
His lectures are terrible. Assignments are easy but very long. However the midterm is quite difficult. He gives you 50 minutes to complete the midterm exam. If you fail the midterm (worth 30%) then you might as well drop the course since it'll be extremely tough to boost up your grade in the final exam which is worth 50%.
Inspirational professor and motivational professor.
The tests are Questions right out of the textbooks so practice them. The lecture is pretty useless since you have to be really smart to follow along since he doesnt explain anything. But as long you do all the problems from the assigned textbook you should be good.
Here is the deal with Igor, he is not the best however his tests and exams are from the textbook. As long as you practice from the book you can get an A. Due to this fact I would do another course with him.
Tests are hard, avoid at all costs.
His Accent and handwritting is really hard to understand. I dont recommend him at all.
never seen the prof like this, no office hour, run after class, if you want ask him a question, impossible!!!!,and no one understand his teaching
Material is easy but its hard to understand from prof.
Cant teach at all. His accent is extremely thick, and is impossible to understand him or his handwriting. He provides no notes, and copies down examples from the book on the board in class. The course had no assignments, only tests which made it very test heavy. Avoid if possible, i skipped all classes but his tests came directly from the book.
Had him in the previous semester. He essentially read from the textbook and all the questions on the midterm, exam and assignments were right from it. The only point of going to class was to know which chapter was being covered since we skipped a few. If you understand the examples you'll be fine.
Every weak you prepare to class . He gives a list of exercices. Make sure you do them. Quizzes he gives in class help A LOT! Subject is difficult and complex but he makes it easy. Attend class. Do not fall behind at all. His tests and quizzes turn easy as long as the exercises he gives are done(very similar questions). Would definitely do again.
Do not fall behind at all. His tests and quizzes turn easy as long as the exercises he gives are done(very similar questions). Would definitely do again.
Subject is difficult, his classes are comprehensive and in class quizzes really helpful - makes you study and helpful in not falling behind. Don't fall behind, do all exercises and you get an A. Make sure you learn the soluitons ( he ALWAYS posts the solutions for exercises, tests etc) Tests are usually exactly like exercises with data changes.
Professor Igore Poliakov is one of the rare professors who cares about students'improvement rather than only lecturing. He's very friendly with students and at the same time extremely respected. He is an expert of Calculus. He covers all the important points very clear to understand. I had fun with Calculs 2 and got A on this course. Thanks a lot.
Worst prof at York. Heavy accent. Had to learn everything on my own. Basically copies the whole textbook on the board.
You never know what's going on. He goes very fast.
Attend his classes, follow his recomendations for reading and studyinh and above all do not fall behind. Attend classes AND YOU WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM AT ALL. Subject is difficult and in class quizzes are very and really helpful . Do all exercises and you get an A
Really cares about his students.
One of the best math professors. If you sit near the front, do your homework regularly, and focus in lecture (The stuff you should be doing anyway), you will know the subject better than if you took it with anyone else and get a good mark. As he says it's our choice to be in university, put in the effort or go to Tim Horton.
Professor Igor makes sure the students are able to achieve their personal best goals and marks. Every lesson is taught with complex topics broken down into simpler topics with various examples and life connections. Always ask questions if confused and attend class! Very reliable and class lecture notes prepares best for exams and midterms.
Professor Igor always encourages students to do well, always says you come to class to learn (or you could go to Timmies and chat up). Cares abut students and success of the students. Knows how to teach and the most knowledgeable math professors ive known!
I am taking math 1505 with him. I'm in my 5th year at york and this is the hardest course I've taken here. His accent is heavy and his quizzes are unfair for a first year math course. while the other sections get multiple choice, we get 5 impossible questions on our tests.
He is a nice guy but a terrible prof. He is way too hard on his midterms, much harder than other sections. He looks at you like youre stupid if you cant answer him. Worst course Ive ever taken.
Terrible course. He is an okay prof, makes it seems like he cares about the students success but then gives us impossible questions on the exams. Came off as rude and impatient in his office hours.
Worst math Professor Ever. I don't know why there are any good reviews of him. He tends to show favoritism and is always unclear on the material being tested. Avoid. Listen, this course is easy, but this professor makes it a nightmare
Professor Igor always does everything possible to keep students aware that this is s difficult sibject and he tests us BEFORE the real exams, gives opportunities for those who come class to learn. Attend classes and pay attention and it will be easy. He knows his stuff and is dedicated to help students. Wish all classes were like his.
Not one of the best math profs. Be sure you take highschool calculus before enrolling in this course, a good majority is based off it. Hes very clear on whats going to be on tests and lets you know whats not that important. Absolutely hated how I could not understand his accent and hated the fact that he wrote on a green chalkboard in a faint chalk
There no such thing as a bad student, only a bad professor, one who has no experience in teaching mathematics at all. if you ever think that a certain prof who says you can get in A in his class then you must be mistaken for the lies he says since all he will do is ruin your career and feel good about it. No respect and no honor in mathematics.
Attend his lectures, If you don't you are for sure not going to do well. He is caring towards his students but be prepared for lectures straight out of the textbook. His accent is heavy but you do get used to it over time. I self-taught myself the whole course as he went way to fast during his lectures. I personally would not have him again.
Thick accent. But other than that he is a nice guy and if you study and do the homework you should be fine. He is hard to understand so I'd recommend skipping and doing the textbook hmw and review.
Absolutely the most discouraging class I've ever attended. I stopped attending after a month as Igor just mumbles with a thick accent and quickly scribbles on a projector -bits and pieces of the textbook with disregard for the students. Overloads with webassign Q's. Perfunctory at its finest. Discourages questions in class with nonsense answers.
Cannot understand a word he says. His lectures are just copying the material from the textbook word-to-word on to paper as his lecture. Absolute waste of time as he goes way too fast. Recommend read the textbook and go to GradeSavers. He does not write any tests, just uses the ones from other profs. He cares about students and is a nice as a person
If you are a strong math student and can self-study, then Igor is fine. Lectures are difficult but class is doable. He cares for students by giving bonus questions for 1013 (7%) to add to final exam. Lots of WebAssign homework (10%), but use it as a booster since answers can be searched for. Straight-forward tests, easier than WebAssign questions.
Prof explained concepts very well, accent is very strong so can be hard to understand some words. Prof writes very fast and explains concept fairly quickly so you have to pay full attention in lectures. Tests were very simple and easy to get a good grade but homework every week and the questions given are very many and take a lot of time to finish.
He is kind but he doesnt know how to teach this much.. but his lectures are interesting
The course is both incredibly difficult, and the professor just ends up making it worse. Firstly he has poor handwriting, a strongish accent and has trouble teaching with technology. Thus forcing students to spend triple the hours outside of class learning the material. Forcing assignments weekly is a pain, and a massive time drain. Good luck!
Avoid if you can. I did not understand a single thing from his lectures. He has awful internet and doesn't know how to use his computer. Won't ever take him again. Quizzes and Tests are kind of easy.
I highly do not recommend this professor as his online teaching is basically him inaudible talking with a thick accent and with his bad handwriting making notes with a faulty camera which is copying the textbook. Dose not listen or answer students question in a rush to end class and finish notes quickly. You have to teach yourself this course.
Lectures are not horrible or amazing. As long as you pay attention and put in genuine effort in trying to understand by paying attention in class and doing all the homework you will be fine. He takes time to answer students' questions to make sure they understand, plus he has a sense of humor while teaching which always helps in a math class.
His zoom classes are so hard to understand because of the mumbling. His notes that he takes are so hard to read because of the handwriting. I basically taught myself everything from this course by using the textbook! I've had no help from him at all in this course and other students in this course can attest to that.
His "lectures" are just copying straight out of the textbook and he does not explain concepts at all. Be ready to teach yourself the entire course. Quizzes/assignments were all on web assign and fairly easy to do well on if you put in the work.
Online due to COVID. All Assignments are online, very straight forward and easy 90%. The tests and exams are now on crowdmark. Get ready to show your proofs properly. Tough grader, 50% on test and 49 % on the exam. Don't take this course lightly.
I don't blame Igor for COVID but he was very unprepared for online teaching. His lectures were difficult to follow along and he had internet issues which he often blamed on the students. His "teaching" is simply copying examples from the textbook and reading them word for word. Course average for the exam was 38.6%, that should tell you enough.
Given the online circumstances, he tried his best despite poor internet connection and the lack of Zoom experience. Accent is a little rough at first, but you get used to it later. The lectures came straight out of the textbook. The online aspect made it easy to do well due to questions coming right from the textbook, but learning it was difficult
Hard to understand at first (heavy accent) but you get used to it. His lectures are very simple, all straight out of the textbook, so no surprises. Takes his time to explain questions asked by students. And good sense of humor.
Terrible professor. I remember at the beginning of the semester we had 168 participants in the zoom lecture. But now, most of us had enough with his black outs and laggy internet. I only attended the first 2 weeks hoping for a better environment. It never came, this professor will let you down, and drop your GPA faster than the great depression.
Poliakov is officially the worst math professor you could ever get in the whole math department of York. He troubles you with disconnections and slow internet. 2020-2021 were the worst years to learn calculus because of him. He is mediocre at best . His office hours were worse than the lectures themselves, and his handwriting is terrible.
One of the worst profs i've had so far. He has a terrible internet connection, his lectures are just a copied version of the book that he writes down on a piece of paper but somehow ends up making it even worse. Straight up ignores students when they ask him a question. Do not take his class. If you do, get ready to teach yourself everything.
Worst prof I have ever had. Does not care if youre in the worst situation possible.
Unfortunately, Igor doesn't answer any questions and chooses to ignore any doubts/concerns. His timing for each test is unreasonable, 15 questions to show poofs with 50 minutes... This course is hard to do well in if he refuses to listen to his students
Gives a lot of questions to do within an unreasonable time, copies from the textbook and his writing his hard to understand. Doesn't answer student's questions most of the time. Had to watch youtube videos outside of class time just to understand and try to pass.
He doesn't care about your questions in class always ignores. Heavy accent its kinda tough to understand him. His quizzes were a bit easy tho.
igor is probably the worst prof ive ever had. not only was he bad at explaining the material, but his internet always cut out, and he blamed it on the students. half the class was just a black screen. his handwriting was hard to read. his tests were too long/hard. avoid.
worse handwriting
This professor neglected the classes concerns about Q and As in between lectures. He blamed the class for poor interent connectivity when his screen is the one that black out. His handwriting is terrible and accent makes it hard to understand the concepts he teaches. This professor was not built for online learning and caused many to hate math.
Do not recommend this prof at all since the accent plus his teaching is the worst!!! I did not understand anything at all and he was impatient to even answer any question. Tests, quizzes and even the assignments were difficult.
Accent is not Understandable
The course expectations declare that lectures are only going to give you a broad picture of the topics and the rest is your job to cover. If you're someone who isn't great at maths or didn't take it up in high school, I wont advice taking up this course.
His lectures are just him doing random questions and projecting it on the screen. His handwriting is hard to read, he goes too fast and seems annoyed when anyone asks questions. You're gonna have to teach yourself everything if you want to do well.
im sorry but this guy is the worst professor I've ever had. His accent is difficult to understand, his writing is chicken scratch, he simply repeats what he writes and doesn't explain, has no organized notes or slideshow that students can follow, simply just rough work on line paper. didn't attend a single lecture and got an A+. AVOID HIM
skipped his lectures, went to literally anyone else for help
I didn't even go to his class but he had a disgusting attitude during the midterm, wow what an awful way to treat students, can't imagine what students who have to go to his lectures have to deal with!
DO NOT TAKE MATH WITH HIM.
It was a bit hard to understand him at first, but I got used to it soon. What I really liked about him was that he was always ready to help. Always answered all of my questions even when the class was already over. Some assignments were hard but he was approachable if we needed any hints.
hes ok
Terrible professor with a strong accent. He never listens to the class's questions and blames them for his poor internet connection. His handwriting is near unreadable and his lectures are dry and very fast paced.
His handwriting was the worst and about his accent was not understandable i dropped it in the second class cause he made everything very complicated. The worst ever.
He is very difficult to understand both in writing and speech
Cant understand anything he says, handwriting is horrible, better to go to almost any other prof
I have taken his calc 1 course and I have failed it badly. I believe I did not even get part marks for certain questions on the midterm. There is also only 2 tests which weighs heavily or how well you study. his writing was also difficult to understand, same goes with his lectures. It's better to study the book yourself
If you care about yourself do not take any math course with him
If you learn Russian you'll have a big advantage in his class
I would save your money and time and take it elsewhere!
Tough class with a professor who has a difficult accent and teaching style. Attend lectures, but be prepared to teach yourself most of the material. unstuckstudy ai was a lifesaver for test prep.
You cant understand him. He might be saying somwthing crucial but you'll have no idea because it is extrmeley difficult to understand him His hand writing doesnt make it any easier either, infact it makes it harder Better to just attend other profs or just watch videos and read the textbook
Confusing language and messy blackboard writing
He is hard to understand both verbally and from his handwriting. You are better off learning on your own or just attending another prof. He isnt helpful either, regardless if you ask in class or in office hours
Very difficult to understand his accent and handwriting. Useless to go to his lectures. I attended another prof's class for the entire semester. However he made his tests pretty fair and he's generous with regrades if you go to his office hours. Genuine guy but most of the learning has to be done yourself. I'd recommend switching profs

Poliakov is not simply a professor; he is a mathematical oracle, a master architect of the abstract realm where numbers dance and logic reigns supreme. His lectures are not just lessons, but cosmic revelations, where every theorem he presents feels like a divine truth unveiled to the fortunate few.
He has a phd in math and has attitude of u should know what he's teaching worse prof I've ever had.
The professor is very knowledgeable and holds a PhD, but struggles to communicate his ideas clearly. His poor handwriting and thick accent make Calculus 1013/1014 harder to follow compared to other instructors. Tests have only four questions which is hard to express your knolage on the units. Recommend switching classes
His tests are set up for you to succeed compared to other profs, had him for 1013 and am now taking him for 1014, his accent and handwriting youd need to get used to but overall he wants his students to succeed, its calc, practice and youll get an A easily. "The only person that can cause you to fail is yourself".
Besides his useless lectures, he curved the lowest compared to other profs. He failed literally half of the class, while other section passed easily. I got the highest mark on the final, yet got a B+. avoid him at all costs. You won't learn anything AND risk your gpa.
Midterms were fairly easy, but he has horrible handwriting and a heavy Russian accent. He was somewhat charismatic in that he would just tell students that they were incorrect very bluntly, or to not talk because he was the guy with a PhD in math or whatever. I'm crazy, but I liked him overall.
His English is pretty bad and he has a thick accent. His handwriting is terrible and his notes are not informative at all. Despite the tests and exams being fair, his poor teaching lead to very bad test results. The average for the final was a 30%, that's how bad it was. If u get him try to switch classes or prepare beforehand (that's how I passed)
his teaching style is rephrasing the text book but his exam is beyond what he tought bad accent bad handwriting
Teaching is the worse. Test's are unreasonable and unfair. Highly recommend not taking this course with Igor.
He is the worst professor I've ever had. He teaches traditionally - but his handwriting sucks. It is a complete rephrasal of the textbook, using huge jargon words. Math is beautiful, but feels completely unintuitive with him. You're just memorizing algorithms. How will you build anything meaningful with that? Take it with a better prof.
Worst Prof I have ever seen, you cant understand his accent, his notes are not worth looking. You can't even read his notes. I wasted my time attending his lectures. Had to self study, you cant pass the course if you depend on him.
