How many teachers do you know that are so well-liked that her class invites her out to dinner? On top of that, she's an outstanding prof, even in her first year.

I had her as a TA last year - she's an amazing prof who is approachable and really interesting, gets the material across very well.

Kim-sensei makes a real effort to help everyone in class. Funny and kind-hearted. It's easy to learn with her.
Cute and funny and very, very patient. My favourite instructor!
she's very helpful in course-related assistance, her explanations are so clear and if not, she'll spend as much time needed to explain them, her encouragement and constant effort to make classes unique and different is indescribable, oh yah, she's so cute
she's super hardworking, she really cares about her students, goes out of her way for students, tries her best to include culture into her lectures, she's more of a friend than a teacher to the class, she definately makes learning fun,
The absoultly BESTEST sensei I have ever had!! NOt only is she well-prepared for classes, but she is also goes all the way in helping her students~ The only thing is that you better pay much attention to your work coz she can pick up every tiny mistake~
She the by-far the best teacher I've had in University (although I'm just second year, but I'm pretty sure it'll stay like this throughout my 4 years in ubc). She's very keen in teaching us the right stuff. She's da best!

I just love her!
I love her too! muah~~ XXOO! and applause for her!
very helpful and considerate! hard to get a good grade for compositions. Projects are interesting. Class even more so.
such a helpful and considerate teacher! This was such a great course! She takes time for marking each assignment, and is great when needing extra help in her office hours. The BEST JAPANESE TEACHER IN UBC!!!! Learned so much japanese culture too!
She is a great teacher but her teaching style has room for improvement. There weren't enough oral practices although this is a conversational class.
so nice....
she is one of the best professor in UBC. You must take her course!!
Kim sensei is quite funny, which makes her class fun. But she's not as good as some of the other Japanese profs in teaching.
I think she made good effort to explain difficult and complicated stuff without depending too much on textbook. She has her teaching style and the best part of her class is that her class is not intemidating at all. She is great!
very good, fair, and helpful.
Very nice and will go out of her way to help you. Her tests are difficult and confusing, definatly meant to trick you. Good teacher but her tests are terrible
Best teacher in UBC. very passionate, and funny... very fast reponse to e-mails..~~
Best teacher in UBC!!!! I love her~~
She's hot..... ;-) (Quizzes every day, but she's says everything in such a warm and sweet manner, even when she's kicking people out of class. Nice to be in her presence, and she says you can just drop by her office to chat.)
Kim sensei is the sweetest nicest teacher! She's very understanding and compassionate to each and every student. Her lectures are clear and interesting, and she's very helpful when u approach her for questions. Her expectations are very reasonable, and she also encourages hard work.
She is nice, but is not really fair.
She's very nice and patient. Her teaching is great and interesting. Completely no negatives at all!!! I took her for both Japn 100 / 101
The 400 level requirements don't say you must know all the jouyou kanji, but I felt like I was expected to read and write fluently. Huge amounts of class prep, very hard exams and lots of readings with no vocab lists or help. Not a mean teacher, but not helpful and she expects maybe too much. Another UBC JAPN class that made me regret my major.
I've studied in well knows programs such as Middlebury's Japanese Language School and the Hokkaido International Foundation's Cultural Exchange program. Before Kim I would say I've had some of the best Japanese professors. I must say, she is the worst language teacher I have ever studied under. Warning: You end up responsible for her laziness.
Great prof. Love the occasional kansai ben. Course itself isn't hard for native speakers or fluent speakers. just memorize the vocabs 20 min before each class for quizzes. and if you already love reading news papers like those fathers out there..then this is the prof and the course for you!
helpful and very nice and funny =)
best japanese teacher ever! very helpful and makes the class sooo interesting
She is very helpful and clear and funny! I liked her :) However, she might be strict in some senses.. just concentrate during the class.. Over all.. she's very funny and nice and cares about you!:D I want to take jap103 with her too but I can't:(
Friendly, funny, and outgoing personality. Not very helpful if you approach her outside of class. Easy quizzes and tests, but a much harder midterm that many students failed. Overall though, she's a good prof.
She's hot. Period.
Very engaging prof who uses very relevant examples in her teaching method. Brings up many interesting stories and anecdotes in class to enhance lessons. Often tries to do fun activities with class. Overall wonderful teacher that I'd love to have again!
couldnt get into the class, she let me in. Forgot to THE FINAL, she let me do it! HOW GOOD CAN SHE BE?
Had her for JAPN100, 102 and will be having for 103. Very nice, clear expectations that are laid out first day of class. Funny and she tells you a lot about Japanese culture and stories about herself when she was living in Japan relevant to the class which makes it interesting. Have her for a 4 hour class but she makes the time go by very quickly.
Super nice teacher who makes her class so fun even the material is hard. Very helpful. She will explain the important parts carefully. Also, she works really efficient. For example, she will return the quiz paper within the same day. I enjoyed her class very much, and I hope I still have the chance to study with her.
She teaches with sweet smiles and she certainly makes you enjoy the class. She loves teaching, unlike the other lecturer that I have before. However, her midterm was hard and it is very easy to lose marks. Not much work and some homework is optional not required, but it is helpful if you complete them. She is a very kind teacher anyway
Compared to other japanese teachers, her classes r not easy but she is a really nice teacher, more like a friend. Her classes are interesting and makes student want to participate in class. one of my fav profs in ubc!!
Attendance is mandatory. Her class is hard compared to other and a good grade is not attainable unless you can memorize everything without making mistakes. No clear expectations and outlines for the marking of composition and oral test. Her teaching style was effective though. It is easy to fail this course if you don't work hard.
Very useful, learned a lot from her!! Want to take her class again
Personally, the best and my favourite teacher ever. I don't get my best grades from her class but she's a teacher that inspires interest in her students. She's definitely the best teacher for summer classes. One thing to note is that she's very strict in her marking for 100 classes and has high standards for students in her 400 classes.
You need to be a mind-reader to survive this class. Despite the subjective nature of literature, she demands answers to dovetail with her own. Questions like "What do you think this literary symbol means?" has only ONE right answer - and woe to you if you don't guess it right. As a literature major, I was disgusted.
Very kind and funny. Makes sure everyone understands and creates a very relaxed and interesting learning atmosphere. Getting good grades requires passion, work and regular review (no falling behind or you're screwed), but if you do that you can get an A+.
She is always helpful and cheerful. She is the best lecturer I have ever had in UBC! There's lots of quiz but not much homework. She made me feel like to study Japanese so much! You should take her course if you are a beginner in Japanese, she makes very very clear explanations for every single grammar point. I wish she teaches JAPN 200 level too.
Sweet prof, really cares about her students, very understanding and helpful (especially in summer with fewer students and more time)
Awful for any courses above 100-level. Unclear expectations, dull readings. Hours of prep work, only to find that none of it mattered in class. Super long midterm and exam, be prepared to write till your hand cramps. Not open to different opinions despite being a lit course. In short, do not take this course if you don't want to die every class.
The course was hard but she is very kind, organized and knowledgeable. She created an interesting course that encouraged students to think outside the box. She engaged us intellectually with the material and with each other but still have fun.
Extremely kind and helpful, really cares about students and helps them the best she can
she always has a smile on her face :), and that cheers me up. patient and encouraging when students ask questions, and really knows what she's doing. thumbs up!
Kim sensei is incredible! Her teaching style is easy-going, but passionate and driven. She is great at explaining new concepts in different ways so that everyone understands, and she cares so, so much for her students. Super-helpful and open. I miss having her! Arigato gozaimasu, sensei! :)
Best language prof ever. Hilarious and is very friendly with students. JAPN 150 is "intensive", definitely not a joke course, but doesn't feel too tough if stay on top of vocabkanji (finished Genki 1 in 3 months). Lots of in-class group skits and presentations to help you practice, but everyone has fun. Would definitely take her courses again!
Really nice prof! Easily one of the best courseprof I have ever taken at UBC. She marks very specifically, so you will most likely get mistakes on quizzestests, but isn't a hard marker. As long as you study, you'll be fine.
Really a great Professor! She is really helpful and kind! You won't be bored if you take her class! And I love the video project! Its cool and really fun!
Kim sensei is amazing. Although she makes you present something in front of the class everyday, she is the best japanese prof at ubc. Marks very fairly, gives you a clear criteria for each test and is super helpful when asked for help. I wish she taught all of the Japanese classes at UBC. Other profs can't compare to her. She made me love Japanese.
Kim Sensei is my favourite Japanese professor at UBC. She goes above and beyond for her students, is easy to meet with and responds to emails instantly. Her Japanese is very clear and she respects all her students equally. She is still a tough grader but wants everyone to pass and do well. I can't recommend her enough.
A fantastic instructor who is always available to give advice in and out of classroom. With regards to the course (Japanese for Professional Life) - - grades depend primarily on essays and group project - topics are discussed in depth in class so attendance is essential - easy to pass, difficult to excel
She is one of my favorite professors and I adore her personality. This class is highly discussion based and she encouraged us to think more deeply and critically by asking great questions. The course material she chose were also very inspirational and philosophical.
BEST PROF I'VE EVER HAD HANDS DOWN Kim sensei is incredibly supportive, caring and super hilarious. Her classes are extremely engaging, informative and just overall enjoyable. She presents the material in a very "easy-to-remember" way, and encourages her students to talk/listen more, rather than write down notes. Will definitely take her again!
Kim-sensei is THE best prof ever. She gives clear instructions and explanations and never fails to amuse and engage the class. She's also very approachable and responds to emails very quickly. While some may say she's a tough grader, she's not; it's simply not possible to get a good grade in a language class without putting in the effort
The beat Japanese Pro ever!
Kim sensen is the best prof ever! She made me love studying Japanese
DO NOT take japn452 if you are not into critical thinking/writing/reading and all that sort. professor kim was the only reason why i could pull through cos shes the most genuine thing ever. always there to help, extend deadlines and super understanding but also wants u to put in effort. only took it for lit requirement btw lol
She's the best Japanese prof at UBC. Helpful and nice and her exams are fair.
What else can I say? She's the BEST!
THE BEST JAPANESE PROF in UBC!!!! She's just so inspiring, funny and supportive ALL THE TIME!!! Made me love Japanese.
Kim-sensei is an amazing professor! I had her for Japn 200 and 201. Her grading is very fair and she gives a lot of feedback! I looked forward to doing my daily workbook homework because she would leave written responses and kaomojis when checking it over. I'm motivated to continue studying Japanese so that I can be in her class again, someday.
I took JAPN101 just for fun and honestly Kim Sensei really inspired me to continue learning. You can tell she really understands what it takes to learn a language and the workload was very balanced between reading, speaking, listening and writing. She's a real gem!
Here you have it, everyone: THE best Japanese prof. Kim sensei is so funny, kind, and encouraging. She made learning Japanese so enjoyable, and made me want to continue learning it. Some might complain about the workload, but I mean... you need that amount of homework to be able to keep up with the speed of the class. It was a fair amount tbh
Kim sensei is really nice and cares for her students. I would say the course wasn't too tough b/c all grammar points were easy to understand. It's just the workload was quite heavy and I spent so much time studying and doing assignments (writings, projects etc.), which was quite exhausting. Overall a great and happy course thanks to Kim sensei!
Probably the best prof I had in UBC. In-class participation is necessary but she makes it fun and enjoyable. If you have the chance to take her class, don't miss it cause she don't miss
She probably the best prof I ever have I'm UBC. Her class is interesting and very inspiring. She organized he course very well with clear schedule and grading criteria which is very helpful. Although the course is not easy, but I enjoyed my time with the course.
I would say she is the best Japanese prof I have ever had. She is very inspirational and only wants the best for her students. Though the readings were sometimes difficult to understand and requires a lot of critical thinking, Kim-sensei always provides feedback and questions that nudge you to consider all possibilities of viewing one thing.
I took her class in 2002. She was a very effective, engaging, and fair teacher but equally funny and warm-hearted. We got her a gift certificate to a restaurant at the end because she was the most amazing prof anyone could ask for. Let's be clear, the reason she is such a good prof is because of her impressive personal traits. The best.
Amazing prof, the most loving, caring, and engaging class I ever took. So much so, I want to keep taking Japanese with her
Excellent Prof, the best Japanese Prof I had after looking back at all six JAPN courses I took. Class wasn't easy but the Professor made it really fun and engaging, I was actually looking forward to attending her class every week even though I had a habit of skipping classes. I took her class in 2017 so this review is kinda late.
I admit she is a great professor, but maybe after teaching too many higher-level classes, she seems to have forgotten that this is a 100-level introductory class. You can't expect us to be as good as native Japanese!! And the exam time is extremely short, with lots of homework. Hoping she will change.
Super nice teacher. You can feel yourself special in her class. Lots of speaking practice in class and lots of bit doable homework.
Kim-sensei is an excellent professor and definitely one of the best the UBC Japanese program has to offer. Her lectures were super enjoyable to attend and she gives students plenty of opportunities to practice speaking, listening, etc. I also appreciate how she spent time every lecture teaching us about Japanese culture. Grading and tests are fair.
Kim-sensei is undoubtably one of the best Japanese profs. Her homework and in-class activities are designed to prepare you for bigger assessments. She takes time to give individual feedback + acknowledges and values your time and effort. Classes are fun and interesting. Exams aren't difficult. Schedule is flexible which is less stressful imo.
Super involved with the classroom and makes you really feel like an individual. Also super duper caring about the learning within the classroom.
Kim sensei is an incredible teacher and can absolutely get you decent Japanese proficiency! Her course is very structured and easy to get used to. I also took her 260 course and both are pretty difficult because of how strict she is with marking. But on more subjective assignments such as projects, she is lenient. Also, Kim sensei is very motherly!
She is my absolutely favorite professor, she gave me so much support. She is a touch grader and challenges us, but she gives you the resources to succeed. Also, she is so so funny, you will smile every single lecture.
