If theres one teacher you should avoid, its this guy. Use his class for sleep.

A serious finance major and taken finite math will breeze thru this class.
would not suggest taking him
Dr. Jurn is a cool teacher, he's also very smart and knows his stuff
No Comments
too hard to understand. Doesn't help students
hard to understand, doesn't answer ?'s, takes 20 min to start computer, AVOI
very hard, he flies throught every chapter
You cannot understand what this dude is saying! He is terrible (as least for stats). I didn't learn anything. I had him for finance though and it wasn't bad.
Not too bad, gives chances for lots of extra credit which is helpful, go to class and pay attention, and use a finance calculator the class is pretty easy.
Bright professor, knows his stuff and despite language differences he knows how to teach. One of SVSU's best faculty!!! Go to class, do the problems, and you will both ace it and learn a lot. Don't pay attention to those who say he is hard to understand
Find a different teacher
Do not take Dr. Jurn for Applied Statistics. It is a nightmare! This is coming from an A student. The exam is nothing like what is gone over in class. Student beware!
Hard to understand, can be very confusing at times. Tests are way different from what is covered in class. I hope that i can pass.
Uses examples, knows his stuff. Test problems covered in class with examples, multiple choice is not covered in class. Book doesn't truely corespond to multiple choice questions. I would not recommend him
Dr. jurn is an amazing teacher with the ability to inspire his students while teaching the maximum amount of information in a short period of time.
The material was very difficult, but he explained with clarity and was very helpful. It is obvious that he cares about his students. If you go to class and do the problems and put in effort, you will do fine.I couldn't have asked for a better professor.
Top quality!! Accent may make it a little bit difficult to understand, but overall, I could understand him clearly. He made a very difficult topic enjoyable and seem almost easy. You should def. take a class from Professor Jurn before you graduate.
clear explanations, easy to understand and best teacher.
one of the best fin profs at svsu
if you don't like this course then something wrong with you.
Ok, apparently the Dr. Jurn has been rating himself, because the good ratings listed below are complete bull. He is terrible; you can’t understand him at all. Plus, at mid-term half the class was failing because his class is so ridiculous.
Whoa!!!
It's hard to understand the lectures due to his poor English. Provides his own formula's instead of using the textbook formulas. The book will be of little help in this regard. Often skips steps when explaining. He will try to answer questions, but often times doesn't understand what is being asked.
If you don't understand,go ask him I've learned more in his classes than any other class.
hard material. good instruction.
He's OK. He makes me more thinking about math skill. if you have good math skill than his class will be easy.
great class, if you liked and understand math120b then this class will be easy for you as its very math oriented, i enjoyed this class and he is very smart in the field of finance
Funny guy, difficult material made easy, lectures are way more impotant than the book. Quizes a few weeks before the exams have exam material on them. Overall good class.
Tough material, but he teaches it pretty well. Attend every class, or you will be lost! Be able to do the problems he goes over in class. He gives quizzes before each exam, those problems are exactly like those on the test. Exams are hard and long, he throws in some really difficult questions. He gives lots of opportunities for extra credit.
This class is interesting, not easy, but you learn a lot. I would reccommend to anyone.
Very tough material and he is a little difficult to understand. You will have to put in a lot of effort out of class to get a passing grade. Offers a lot of extra credit, which the majority of the class needed.
TONS of extra credit, DO NOT SKIP CLASS or youll be lost with the material. 3 EASY assignments, 3 quizes 3 exams. Hard stuff made easy...
He uses his own formulas and forget about using the book to reinforce any questions you have. He needs to take an english class. He teaches you how to do problems and then changes the questions for the test, so what you learned is not what is asked. He asks if you understant 100% but it is obvious that he really does not care. AVOID THIS TEACHER!
Mid-semester it seemed that over half the class was failing. He begins offering a LOT of extra credit and easy assignments. Every class he whips through problems and tells you which ones to study for the quiz or exam. MC on the exams are completely ridiculous since he never explains what he's doing. Not an easy class, but I found it bearable.
He is pretty good and made things easier with formulas from the calculator. Exams are difficult but just know how to do the problems on the board. English is broken but I've had my share of foreign professors so he's not bad. Take him if you can...A lot better than Elfakhani!
I am very good at dealing with equations and how to use them...but this guy lost me at day one (and you don't ever have to memorize an equation). I thought it was due to the accent, but it's really not. He goes way too fast, he doesn't actually teach you anything, but seems to be a nice guy. ugh...frustrating to say the least!
I found he was one of my best instructors at SVSU (I had him for 4 classes). You cannot just show up and expect a good grade. He makes you think and challenges you. He expects you to review the material prior to showing up for class. If you serious, you'll have an A at the end of the class.
If you want to get a good grade you have to study hard. He offers extra credit, but it is necessary to get a good grade. His tests include M/C questions that he never teaches in class and are hard to find in the book, and it is near impossible to understand him while he is 'teaching.' he often goes off on tangents about unrelated topics.
His teaching style is very difficult. There were many students whom simply stopped coming because he was just way to fast. He did offer help when and if you scheduled an appointment. It was very hard to follow him. English is a little broken but understandable. He was nice and professional
this teacher thinks that he is the best teacher ever. its sad that he does not know how bad he is !
Outside reading from Textbook is necessary for an A. Goes through examples but doesn't explain them; works them out as if it's his HW for another class. Use previous edition, no assigned HW. Nation Standardized class, so look on iTunes for a Finance 380 free lecture series, it along with home reading got me a good grade and his in class
Tough class and tough professor. its about 10 homework assignments. 2 excel projects worth 25 points each. 6 regular exams worth about 50 points each.a wall street journal presentation. and a final worth 100 points. Hard class.Jurn gets you ready for the real world
I understood the concepts in class. I did the homework assignments pretty easily. The tests are what got me. I still passed his class with an "A-" but it definitely took some work! Also, he is sometimes hard to understand because of his accent.
I did not understand this guy at all and he always let us out early. His tests are impossible. Take someone else if possible. half of the class were people that were retaking it.
I spent this entire class wondering what he was saying. His English is very broken and with an already tough class it makes it almost impossible. Take it with Mackie if you can!
Expected students to have an advanced knowledge of subject matter. Not realistic in an introductory class. Had to use Google and Youtube to explain topics.Avoid this professor!!
This professor likes to teach theory. He has a difficult time explaining the application and answering students' questions. He is a pleasant person and very intelligent, but I was in tears many nights with the homework and lack of help. Exams were difficult and lengthy. His English is hard to understand which made the lectures more confusing.
Good professor was hard to understand at times from is English but the class really is simple. 3 exams each worth 100 pts and 100 pts worth of quizzes, papers and easy projects.. Class is out of 400pts need to study for exams, he gives you examples of the questions. Good amount of extra credit. He bumped final grade from 87 B+ to and A-...
I love Iksu Jurn. He is honestly a great professor who actually cares about his students, not to mention he gave everyone in my class a letter grade increase for the overall final course grade.
Professor Jurn was one of the best teachers I've had at SVSU. He challenges his students but is very fair. I learned a lot from him.
Dr. Jurn was an okay teacher. He gave out tons of extra credit which made up for people not understanding his lectures. He just moves quite fast so you better get what he is talking about the first time.
he's actually a wonderful guy, very honest and caring. shows in his character. the only problem is that students can't and don't have the capacity of knowledge he possesses. I personally need to understand application of problems, not the theory behind them. he's a great guy, just a difficult professor.
knowledgeable and nice but not the best teacher. Tests are problem heavy but he only spends a fraction of the class teaching how to work them. Heavy accent and doesn't use a book which makes the class difficult. There were multiple times when the entire class did not understand a project/assignment. Very lenient grading but you wont learn anything.
Jurn was funny and a nice guy, however it was very difficult to understand his lectures and he assumed everyone knew what he was talking about. He also skipped steps in his math while displaying it on the board yet when asked he claimed he didn't skip any steps. Wouldn't take again.
Jurn is losing interest in teaching, and it really shows. He puts no effort into teaching, and guarantees you'll pass if you do all the exams/homework. Incredibly difficult class that is not taught well. Don't expect an A, and prepare to be frustrated with bad exam grades and boring lecture. Curve at the end to make sure you get at least a C
Very nice guy but terrible Professor. You have to rely on his teaching since tutoring is not available for this course. Half of what he shows in class is not in the book and he tells you that. He offers no partial credit as well. You can do all of the work, but if the answer is wrong, its a 0. By far the most stressful class I have had.
This class definitely had its ups and downs for me, this is a course where you cannot slack off and expect to get a good grade in it. He definitely makes you work for it. Good class overall and I learned a lot from it. Lots of extra credit as well.
His heavy accent makes it difficult to understand him. Syllabus was inaccurate in terms of grading and due dates of assignments and exams. Unorganized with online material; frequently made mistakes when posting class material. Exam questions do not correspond to slides. Does not give feedback. Responds to emails quickly but with one or two words.
Avoid him at all costs. Period.
His English is very hard to understand sometimes. The class has 3 exams worth 100 points each and then 100 points with small quizzes and assignments for a total of 400. Gives a lot of extra credit and teaches off the slides, you do not need the book but it helps. Very caring professor as long as you communicate your struggles with him.
Hes kinda of all over the place with his lectures. He takes bits and pieces from the chapters that usually dont have much to do with the tests. He seemed like a good guy and knew his stuff, but he couldnt teach a lick. Also his accident made it quite difficult to understand at times. Also very unorganized.
A dulling 3 quiz and 3 test format. He had to create assignments mid-semester to boost our grades. Its a simple subject that is over-complicated by this professor. He even said we only needed 30 mins of study time per class. That is a lie for most, the tests are hard to prepare for as well. Hard to understand and no tutoring for this course.
No homework, only a few grades in the book. Very tough to understand, but is a good professor. Exams require a lot of studying but what is on quizzes will be seen on the exams. Does not give partial credit on quizzes making them difficult. Overall an ok class, is pretty hard, would recommend taking someone else.
Be prepared to put a lot of time into this class. Exams directly correlate with the homework problems assigned. Syllabus says that no extra credit is given, but points were given throughout the semester for different things. He will answer any questions you have, so ask.
He is very hard to understand! He makes fun of your questions, and his exams are really difficult. Also, there is no partial credits in the quizzes, so you have to understand everything on your own. I do not recommend taking him. The way he teaches makes everything so complicated.
Professor Jurn is very nice, but not a good professor. He tells you what questions will be on the quizzes (and some on the exams) but changes them up slightly. The quizzes are difficult because there is no partial credit so know what you are doing. He is somewhat difficult to understand, but gives quite a bit of extra credit. Would not recommend.
All slideshow notes are just examples and he doesn't teach finance principles very well, just the examples. All quiz and exam questions are based off the examples, but then changes them slightly making them confusing. Very hard to understand in lectures and is very bad at answering questions the way you want them answered.
Very nice guy, this is my second time taking him. Yes, the class is difficult and you'll need to take time to study on your own to fully understand the concepts, but it is doable. As for the book, I used an old version that was cheaper and the homework questions were the exact same, so that can hopefully save you some money!
Jurn is a really cool guy, but doesn't explain anything hes teaching, he shows an example and says to read about the concept in the book. The tests are just like homework questions though so it isn't bad if you spend the time to learn it outside of class. No quizzes, homework isnt bad, one assignment a week. 6 exams.
Worst professor I've ever had to endure in my 4 years at SVSU. He moves very quickly through very complicated math problems. He doesn't assign homework which makes practicing for exams very difficult. He doesn't explain things in his lectures. Even if you ask a question, his "answer" doesn't help. If I could give a 0/5, I would.
The main issue I had with him was how he would show us how to do the work for problems by using a calculator function or excel formula, but ask that we show all of the work for the problems on exams in order to receive full credit for the problem.I would not recommend him as a professor, but I will say that he is a VERY nice person outside of class
The class itself is pretty difficult and you need to be prepared to do a lot of self-learning. You need to study hard to get a good grade. He's difficult to follow, however he's very nice as a person. He offers extra credit and there's a lot of point opportunities.
Jurn is tough to understand and he is not good at teaching. Full disclosure, you should be able to get at least a B no problem, but do NOT expect to know how to do anything. Grade is only from 3 quizzes and 3 exams plus extra credit. No homework ever. He is confusing and tough, but doable. If you can get someone else, do. But if not, no big deal
I am probably going to drop this class. I have no idea what's going on good luck to everyone
If you study the examples on the slides and the test banks on canvas, they are the exact same as the questions on the tests and quizzes. If you ask he will tell you exactly which slides to study. This class is doable if you put in the time.
He is hard to understand, but if you study his lectures this is an easy class to pass. he has a lot of extra credit opportunities, just put in the work and you will be fine.
First and foremost, he is a VERY kind and caring professor. You just have to talk with him and he will do EVERYTHING he can do to help you. The only problem is that his accent is a pretty tough to understand. My best advice is to practice the in-class examples and the ones on the slides and to reach to out to him for help if you need it.
This was easily the most difficult and frustrating class I have taken in my 4 years at SVSU. Jurn is such a nice guy outside of class, but he definitely does not know how to teach in a way that can be understood by someone that does not have a lot of previous knowledge about the topics. Can also come off condescending when you ask questions.
Great guy, terrible teacher. Never learn a thing from his super confusing lectures. Homework based on completion. Goes over the homework next class, but you still dont understand it. 7 exams, but you can use excel (and pull up your notes while you are at it, but shhh...;) You can get an A easily, but you don't understand a single thing. Youll be OK
Jurn presents all of his lectures in a way that assumes you already learned the material once and you are simply recapping. He doesn't explain much when solving things, just sorta expects you to know. Exams and quizzes are SOMEWHAT based on in class content. Don't recommend him but FIN304 seems like a nightmare here no matter what.
Jurn is very nice, but is very hard to understand. He presents slides that only make sense to him. He had to make up assignments so our grades would be slightly less bad. Exams have questions you would never expect. He gives you a formula sheet, but excludes certain formulas. Lectures are boring and do not help much. Gives a bunch of extra credit.
Professor jurn is the worst professor/teacher I have ever had. His classes are impossible to understand between his confusing presentations and his subpar English. Avoid at all costs.
His English isn't great, but it's not THAT bad. If you take the time to practice the material in the lectures, you will pass the tests. It just takes repetition and practice. If you have questions, go to his office hours and he will help. I didn't like him at the time, but when I look back, he was a nice man who will help if you actually ask
