The only grades were three essays, but be careful, because he is an EXTREMELY hard grader. My best recommendation is to write a draft of your essay and see him beforehand with it, because he will help you out so much before the final draft is due. Lectures are clear, but can be dry at times. Overall, very nice and clear professor, TOUGH grader.
I took this Professor and I failed. Lectures are good but he is a very hard greater. If your a good wrtie take him, if not, do not even think about it. Tough guy.
Soooo boring!
stay away!!! most borning professor ever! and he is the HARDEST grader in the world !!!! i have NEVER gotten lower than an A on a paper and i consider myself a great writing and he gave me 2 60's. He is such a nice guy. but stay away. oh and sometimes he keeps u till alittle after 3
I disagree with some of the comments below. I've never liked history classes in the past but his lectures are interesting. Also, while he is a tough grader, he is always available to help you out and lets you bring a draft for him to proofread. I wish all my teachers paid this much attention to their students.
He is not only an amazing professor, but an amazing person too... he is a tough grader though, so be careful. take him if you truly wanna learn because he really knows his stuff :) and he is sooo committed to his students, it's not even funny! I'm glad i met him, he is one of those professors i'll never forget :)
HIS CLASS WAS SOOOO BORING...I MADE A MISTAKE AT TAKING HIS CLASS FROM 6:20 P.M TO 9:00 P.M ALL HE DO HIS WRITE NOTES AND LECTURE ALL CLASS AND EXPECT YOU TO WRITE A 3 PAGE PAPER ON THE HIS NOTES AND A MEXICAN BOOK THAT HE DOES NOT USE ALOT. HE IS ALSO A TOUGH AS GRADER SO B CAREFUL...HE HAS NO QUIZ OR HOMEWORK IN HIS CLASS.
If you enjoy the history subject and are a pro in writing papers you are good. But if these are your weaknesses dont do it. In my experiences with many teachers he is very tough at grading papers. I really took my time with my paper and literally read the book & went to tutoring for proofreading and got a 75! I expected at least a B...beware!
I dont like him or his class. hes not a good teacher, hes boring as can be and just isnt good at what he does
Personally, I enjoyed the class and would recommend it. He's not an easy A but he's also genuinely interested in helping you improve your writing. Let's be honest, if you want to graduate with some real world skills - he will help you develop them. If you want to do nothing and get an easy A, this is not the class for you.
3 papers, no quizzes, you need to have good writing skills... He is tough when grading but he is an amazing professor. You are going to take a lot of notes but they will help u write the 3 essays. You will learn a lot and he is extremely helpful, he is THERE for the students any time. He is the best, just don't expect to get an A if u don't study.
He is very nice, but really a tough grader. If one of your weaknesses is writing papers don't take him because even when you think that you did a good job he would give you a 75. He will keep you in class until the last minute and there are 3 papers due during the semester, no HW or tests.
omg!! what a boring class!! He's such a tough grader but he will try to help you improve your writing. He only gives u 3 papers and thats it! Good luck taking him!
You would think such a nice, funny guy would be a reasonable grader. He's deceiving!!Hell be the nicest professor in class but wait till he grades ya paper. 3 essays, thats how your graded on. He states to the class he doesn't expect us to be Shakesphere writers, haha yeah right! Good luck getting an A.
What everyone else said is exactly correct. He is one of the toughest teachers in all my years of school. Do not take his class!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You think you know but you have no idea.
He is a good teacher, but can be boring towards the end of the class. He is hard in the fact that he only gives you 3 papers to write and no other homework. He is a very hard when it comes to grading those papers.
I was one of the few people who always spoke in class, always showed up,etc, but I think he is totally pretentious, and somehow thinks he knows everything about the written word. He gave me all C's on my papers and here is the absolute stunner, I am writer, and have been published. Going to him for help is a waste of time. I truly dislike him.
A good teacher, but very tough grader! He will give you 3-4 papers to do, and good luck getting more than a B or C. You will loose lots of point on grammar and citations!! Tells you to not worry about being the best writer, but still gives you poor grade! He will never let class leave a minute early in a 3 hour long evening class!
He's extremely clear about what he wants & gives you all the notes you need, you just need to copy them down. He tells you everything to include in the papers. I got a B+ at the end of the semester. Definitely the best class I took. I'm taking his other HIS class soon. He's just a bit picky with punctuation & grammar, but I totally recommend him!:)
He is amazing! He does take a lot of points off if ur paper is not what he expects, but he is willing to help his students, problem is that these students dont want to ask for help. He is not an easy A at all, so if ur a slacker dont even bother taking this class. I got an A because before every paper was due i met with him to go over my essay.
Hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. Lots of note taking but thoroughly explains everything in a fun way, even does small review the following class. Very friendly and always willing to help.Tough grader but what do you expect? This is college.Even offered to help me choose next semesters schedule and future planning. Will take again.
He is the best Professor at BCC. He is a tough grader but he is also helpful. He challenges you but not to the point where you cant do the work. All you have to do is keep up with the reading and ask for help if you don?t understand. Compared to other Professors he seems to be the only one that knows what he is doing.
Warning:Takes the class very seriously. If you're looking for a class that you can just skim through, don't take his class. He's a very tough grader but gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. He's helpful with essays. Hated having to go deliver my papers even though it was an ONLINE class. Over all a good but TOUGH professor. Beware lazy people
knowledgeable professor extremely helpful makes the class fun however tough grader is an understatement, nothing you give him is ever good enough and forget about handing a paper in late cause he wont accept it not too many papers but lots of assigned readings
He is A VERY HARD GRADER!!!!!!
Professor Ehrlich is hard but fair. You can learn a lot from him and he is always available. Moreover, he was quite helpful with a recommendation I needed on short notice.
Great teacher - real college level content with very helpful supportive instruction. I learned a lot. Warning, he is a tough grader. Tip - confer with the Prof on every paper before the due date.
Professor Ehrlich demonstrates what college professor are supposed to be. Unfortunately, many are not so seems unfair and difficult. i.e. tough grader and no late papers not accepted. He has thorough knowledge of the subject and always willing to help..Just ask! Communicate and read the material and you will pass
Good Professor but so boring do not take him he goes until the very last second of class and just talks forever. He is the worst and toughest grader in the world and is not helpful in any way whatsoever. Save your time and money and take someone ANYONE but him.
He is one of the toughest professor in the earth. He does not care our GPA and Grade. If you are not good at writing and grammar, do not take this class. His four writing essays are extremely hard. But most important think is that he does not give a good grade ever!!!
I honestly learned a lot in this class, so much information I did not know before. However, this professor is an extremely tough grader. There are only 4 essays, and that's it. He takes off points if spelling and grammar are off, or if you go over the page limit he has set. You will get a decent grade though if you ask him for help.
When I enrolled in this course by no means did I expect it to be an easy A or easy at all for that matter. This class is just awful, probably the biggest mistake I've made thus far in my college career. He is extremely passionate for this subject. Great. But he is by far the toughest grader. READ AND ASK FOR HELP!!! I cannot emphasize that enough
Professor Ehrlich is by far one of my favorite professors. He has a wealth of knowledge, his lectures are riveting. Admittedly he is a tough grader, but if you work hard you will reap the benefits. Professor Ehrlich holds you to a high standard, which is not typical for community college professors. I would recommend him time and time again.
Learn how bugged out U.S. relations are in Latin America. Warning not for EBS students 4 COLLEGE LEVEL essays drops lowest. Strict deadlines but understands life happens just prove it was done before the due date. Lots of reading dont wait for the last min. Received a B in HIS 130 but fell off in 131 got a C. Take his CLASSES dude is the truth !
Overall a good professor, I took his class for Latin American History Since independence. The class isn't that hard, but he's got his hobby horses. He'll go on and on about policies or people he's interested in and ignore others. This is especially true in as you reach modern times. Overall a good teacher, but a bit annoying sometimes.
If I could do it all over again, I would not have taken this class. I found it difficult to get any help from him and his grading system is super strict. Learning was extremely stressful due to his teaching methods. I don't recommend taking him.
Good professor. Grading based on 4 essays (he gives 6 but you only do 4). The essays are hard and he grades hard.
My first week of the semester i should've followed my gut instinct and dropped this class. You don't ever have to write anything but his method of teaching is too close to a politically correct nuisance. You could have read all the assigned readings but if your paper's format is off it may have all been for nothing. I wouldn't take this guy again.
I took Professor Ehrlich's on-line modern Latin America class and really learned a lot. As someone of Latin descent, I didn't know very much about my history. This course was a real eye-opener. Professor Ehrlich is tough but willing to help. He is also an academic advisor who can help you with your schedule or transfer to a four year school.
As a college level course, it surprises me how some students assume that an A is easily attainable with just showing up. If you want a good grade, especially with Dr. Ehrlich, show that you care and participate. Theres plenty of opportunities to get involved in the discussions and show up to office hours for essay help. Amazing personality.
Professor Ehrlich's on-line class requires a lot of reading but he gives immediate and detailed feedback. Also, he offers several extra credit opportunities during the semester, which rewards students who are willing to make an effort.
His jokes suck in class no one laughs his handwriting sucks makes it hard to take notes plus TOUGHEST GRADER IN BCC no lie guy grades essays and wants an essay that is given to Ph.D. students. Just go take a regular History class with a good teacher and simple basic grading systems I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS GUY TO ANYONE PLEASE LISTEN TO ME TY!!
he's is a tough grader, takes points away for everything even if essays are 5 min late. he does not give homework, quizzes or exams, only a lot of reading and 5 essays. he doesn't teach good, and doesn't give any notes to look back to. if you fail, you have to retake it with him only since he only teaches that class. DON'T RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR
I enjoyed Professor Ehrlich's class, especially his first-hand knowledge of many Latin American countries. He has more than double the office hours of your typical professor and will assist you with schoolwork and scheduling future classes, transfers to four year schools, and any most other questions since he's also an academic advisor.
PLEASE CONSIDER THIS REVIEW BEFORE REGISTERING FOR ANY OF HIS COURSES. There should not be any reason why this course was the hardest one I have taken during my semesters in bergen. I picked it for the enjoyment of the subject, just to realize that his grading criteria were one of the strictest I have ever experienced. SAVE YOUR GPA.
Professor Ehrlich is a really nice guy but, I would not recommend this class for students who struggle with essays and/or are busy outside of school/dealing with a full load. Lectures are primarily a review of the previous class. You must know the Chicago style of writing for the essays. I'm usually an A/B student so this dropped my GPA.
Professor Ehrlich's class was enjoyable and he is accessible outside of class. Once we moved on-line, he did a great job of providing personal attention through video chats. He has high standards and expectations, but this was an honors class and he is preparing us for success further down the line. I learned a great deal.
Professor Ehrlich gives you many chances to succeed. There were six essay options and a final. He keeps the three highest essay options, which means if you do all six you can drop your three lowest grades. I appreciated this since my first essay grades weren't so great. He is also really helpful and provides very detailed feedback on your work.
If you're up for a challenge, this class is for you. The class consists of 4 essays, each being 25% of your overall grade. I recommend attending his office hours because he does grade quite strictly. If essays are not your thing, I do not recommend this course.
If you give him a chance, and have an open mind, this professor will change your life. He is generous with his time, genuinely cares, and knows his subject. Plus, do you have financial aid questions? He can help. Need a recommendation for a four year school? Done. Need career suggestions? He'll actually talk to you for as long as it takes.
Professor Ilan Ehrlich is very respectful and dedicated to his students. I will recommend his class to other students.
Dr. Ehrlich will challenge you, but he will also prepare you for work at a four year college. He is also great as an academic advisor, generous with his time, and available to speak via video chat if you need to speak with him. Highly recommend his class, and he's even better as a mentor.
Gives 4 essays and thats all your grades on. Not to mention he is such a harsh grader, he doesnt specify exactly what he wants on papers etc. asks for no more then four pages but then asks for more details? Make up your mind lol. Save your gpa DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
this class made me hate my entire time at bergen. He might be smart but is a completely useless teacher. He won't explain anything well, has high expectations, and absolutely no feedback on what the actual issues are.
This professor does not assign a textbook or post any lectures/ powerpoints. Instead he assigns 10 readings a week to read (about 25 pages each) and assigns 5 essays a semester based off the readings. He is a very hard grader and expects you to use quotes from every reading in a 1500 page paper. Plus he makes you use an MLA format that is uncommon
Professor Ehrlich expects your best, and he can be a tough grader, but he is helpful, gives great advice, and helps you reach your goals. He is a great mentor, helpful with any questions about the college, and happy to speak with you in person. I wish I had met him earlier in my college career as he's helped me with so many questions.
This professor worked with me every week to improve my writing and by the end of the semester I really saw a difference. He offered to be my advisor, and I was happy to accept since I can email him any time I have a question. He's a great guy and you won't regret getting to know him.
Loved this class and learned so much. Take it but be prepared to work. This prof is extremely helpful.
This professor and this class are a must if you are in the honors program. He writes fantastic recommendations to four year colleges, and is available to help at a moment's notice with scholarship applications. He will also pass along information about scholarships or other helpful things that you didn't even know existed.
Interesting class with caring prof. If you submit all six essay options, you can drop your THREE LOWEST GRADES. This was very helpful. He's also available to assist you with advising stuff. Definitely recommend this guy.
Professor Ehrlich demands your A game, and challenges you to be your best. He will also help you every step of the way to get there. Though this was an on-line class, I spoke to him often on video chats during the semester. Professor Ehrlich always had time for me. Professor Ehrlich also graded essays quickly and provided detailed feedback.
Great guy, interesting class, generous with his time.
Gives an exagerated amount of unnecessary reading. 4 to 5 page essay due every 2 to 3 weeks, encourages to speak your mind, as long as he approves of your opinion. Makes fun of his students and judges other students papers in front of the class. Would never take any courses taught by this individual.
Makes you read an endless amount of USELESS information and from there he expects the student towrite a 4 to 6 essay. There will be an essay due every 2 to 3 weeks. Makes fun of present and past students, and lectures are all over the place, not to mention boring. Never used to check this website, now I check it before signing up for classes.
Loved this class. Great professor, fun lectures, will help you with whatever you need to succeed in college.
I visited this site on a whim after having taken two classes with Professor Ehrlich in 2018. Yes, he's a hard grader, but you will not meet a professor who is more caring and dedicated. Professor Ehrlich nominated me for the honors program, wrote me a letter of recommendation, and helped with my transfer applications. In a word, he's fantastic.
He organizes college tours for students every year so they can visit colleges in New York City. The class was on-line, but he was always available for video chats and he not only asked about class work but registration, transfer applications, how many classes you're taking. He really cares about you as a person and will help you in your career too.
On-line class with six 1050 word papers. You can drop your two lowest grades. This prof. is available for regular video chats, which were helpful. Personally, I thought he was great - a clear, well-organized class.
I took this as a summer on-line class. It was well-organized with clear grading criteria. You can drop your lowest grade.
Just a fantastic class with a very helpful professor.
I have never had a professor with such high standards that I can never please. He is the HARDEST grader, and no matter what you do or what you write, it will never be good enough. Good luck getting above a 65 if he doesn't like you. He is awful, do not take this class.
This was a great on-line class. The prof is available via video chat and I met with him almost every week to help understand readings and essays. He was also very helpful when I had questions about what classes I needed to take for future semesters. He's a great source of information about possible career choices too.
You can drop your three lowest grades, which is very helpful.
Dr. Ehrlich was always available for video chats whenever I had questions. This made all the difference in an on-line class.
The professor encourages that you reach out for help and does encourage you on assignments. But he was a tough grader even after seeing him for help. Best advice drop this class, or if you have to take this class. Read the material and keep in touch with him for extra help.
It's a class u have to make the most of urself bc it's so independent. LOTS of readings, but assignments r very few, if that's for u: It's 4 essays, n only 2 r required; final is also an essay, same format. Grading criteria is less rubric and more guideline, and he's a pretty strict grader, u need to know ur stuff. U don't pay for textbooks tho
Helpful prof that doesn't make you waste money on textbooks.
Can't half-a** your work. He's a tedious grader. I recommend meeting at least once for each paper you have. If you do, make sure you've done some writing prior to the meetings because you will need clarification on some sources and the bibliography. He's also a member of the Honors committee; he can help even if it's with something outside of class.
3 required essays; he'll skim a first draft. a brutal grader, but you'll come out perusing through information faster and writing faster. be wary if writing is not your strong suit. although i disagree a lot with the structure of the course, he seems to see the good in you and will help with things outside of class.
Summer online class. Very involved prof. Reads drafts. He's available to discuss assignments, which helped a lot.
Interesting class, good prof, nice guy, very helpful. He's not easy, and you have to earn it though.
He honestly seemed like a great guy, which he was. As a teacher he was definitely not the nicest and I would suggest taking a different course. You cannot make anything up, and everything has to be handed in on time. Be prepared to be called on in class as well whether you know the answer or not.
The requirements were clear, the lectures and discussions were interesting, often fascinating, and the professor is happy to help with anything. I feel this class prepared me for the kinds of courses I'll take once I transfer. Definitely recommend this class and this professor.
I took this in the summer to fulfill a requirement at my college. Prof was available for video chats to explain the course and questions about readings or assignments. There was an oral exam, which I've never done before, but it turned out fine. He made the process clear and easy to understand. I learned a lot and found him to be helpful.
No matter what I did. His grading was ridiculous. You would have thought you were going to nyu. Drop this class and run
Online class with interesting readings. Professor Ehrlich was available in person and for video chats, which was great. I found him to be helpful and caring. Definitely recommend him.
This was an honors class. Professor Ehrlich was helpful in every way. The readings were rigorous and the course was demanding, but I now feel more prepared for upper level undergraduate work. Professor Ehrlich was happy to help with advice, recommendations, you name it. He also happens to be a respected scholar. You won't regret taking his class.
Nice guy who demands your best work. He gives clear, detailed, and quick feedback on student work. As an online student, I was able to meet him on campus and also on video conferences. He's available and happy to help you improve as a student. He's also an academic advisor, which comes in handy.
Fantastic.
Paired class with Dr. Olbrys. The two professors work well together and the class was a great experience. Was great seeing how philosophy and history go together, how ideas influence events. I recommend them both.
Took this class to learn more about my Latino background. The class was very illuminating. Dr. Ehrlich's class was always interesting. Not only did I learn more about my Cuban roots, but also about Brazil and Haiti, two places I knew almost nothing about. I'm glad I took this class.
Great guy.
Take this class, take this professor. It won't be easy, but you'll learn a lot and think about things differently.
Fun class. Prof has a great sense of humor and makes things interesting.
If you don't want to fail, avoid this professor. Worst professor I've ever had. It feels like he grades as if he's teaching at Harvard. Do yourself a favor and take someone else."
Interesting class, great readings. Prof responds quickly to email and offers detailed feedback.
Fantastic lectures. Very strict about AI use and plagiarism. Be sure to do your own work.
Very helpful professor.
Second time taking one of Dr. Ehrlich's classes.
I learned a lot, more than I expected. Dr. Ehrlich is very knowledgeable.
Dr. Ehrlich is a nice guy, that much is for sure -- I took his class online in the Spring of 2024, and it became apparent quickly that the papers one would write would be graded very seriously. I believe mercy was taken on me for competently trying, but it certainly was hard to meet the criteria for every paper.
Ruined my GPA, came to class & half the students were missing &I realized they all dropped the class like I did the next day. He doesn't care why you submitted something late or why you couldn't on time. You'll have to write 10 pages a week. Surprised he had good ratings, all I am saying is you shouldn't take the risk, just take another professor!!
Do you think colleges don't notice when you take the easiest profs and easiest classes by checking this site? They do. Ask any advisor. Colleges want you to challenge yourself, not to have a soft GPA at a community college. Take this prof. Your writing will improve, your thinking will improve, and he will open doors.
Although not the easiest, he was my favorite last semester! He cares about the future of his students and I recommend you to go to his office hours, you will see a big difference in your grade. Answer every question and prove each one of them with details that are in the readings. CHECK YOUR GRAMMAR! Awesome guy with great personality!
He is a harsh grader. You must be nearly perfect to get a decent grade. Any mistake will result in a massive chunk of your grade being taken out of your essay, with no leniency.
Tough class but you get detailed feedback and quick turnaround on assignments. This prof is a true pro.
Extremely ai reliant. To a point where human text is apparently ai and counts as a 0
Genuinely cares about students, super passionate and knowledgeable and gave engaging lectures. My only complaint is that it's hard to do well bc it's graded on 3 essays and 1 exam. The essays require a LOT of reading, and are graded harshly but not unfairly. But, he grades quickly, is easily reachable outside of class, and is willing to help you
Demanding class but your work will be rewarded with improved writing and thinking. I learned so much. Dr. Ehrlich insists on your best effort but shows you every step of the way how to get better.
He doesn't make sense at all when it comes to grading. Last essay was somewhat mid at best with proper format and all, the next essay the argument is 0/50 and you're left with the grade of citing evidence. Wants less than 1000 words, yet he keeps asking to explain and fill in more and more as if you have the space to do so.
Learned a lot, and the professor was available to help with the class and also class schedule for the spring. He grades essays quickly, usually within 24 hours, and responds fast to email messages, which is important in an online class. Guy gives it his all, basically.
Honors class, with high standards. If you are willing to work hard, Dr. Ehrlich will teach you a lot.
Definitely recommend.
The class was hard but fair. Video meetings were extremely helpful. Dr. Ehrlich is generous with his time and discussions about transfer to four year colleges were more informative than advisors on campus.
As a history major, this was the most impactful class and impactful professor I've taken in college. Dr. Ehrlich will improve your work, improve your prospects for transfer to a four year college, and improve the way you learn in general. I cannot recommend this class highly enough.
Great professor who actually cares about you.
Learned so much about the DR, where my parents were born. Great class, fair professor, who goes above and beyond to help.
Great reading materials, great course. Definitely recommend. Professor Ehrlich makes himself available to answer questions and review coursework, which is very helpful. He also responds to email promptly, which is key in an on-line course.
Not an easy class, but fair, and you can learn a lot if you do the work. I took it to learn more about El Salvador and I did. Believe me. Very helpful professor who can also help with advising.
Goes above an beyond for an online class. Responds promptly to email, is happy to speak on video and explain anything until you understand it. He's funny, smart, patient, and helpful. The class is clear and well organized too.
He's a tough grader who challenges you, but made me a better writer and more persuasive thinker. Let's be honest, some honors classes don't require much of an effort. This one did, and I'm glad I took it because I got a lot out of it.
Interesting readings, especially about my native Brazil.
Definitely recommend this professor.
Professor Ehrlich is so kind and understanding, he also likes when students participate in class. he rarely gives work the only grades you will recieve are essay's and he is a very strict grader the essay needs to include evidence from all readings listed in the prompts if you don't include it then your grade will not be that great.
Passing this class is impossible, told my advisor i was dropping n they said everyone has trouble with that professor! Every class we read painfully boring articles and taking notes are a nightmare with his disorganized style. He's an extremely strict grader, even with ur best effort he still gives the lowest grades possible. Save urself!!!
This prof cares about you as a person. You can talk to him outside of class. He's also an advisor. Yes, he's demanding and wants your best work. What do you think upper level classes will be like when you transfer? Dr. Ehrlich helped prepare me for the future, urged me to make my best effort, and I'm a better student for it.
A smart, respected, genuine historian, with a PhD and book to his name. Dr. Ehrlich is great, helpful, and a fantastic mentor.
I took his Honors History class. I agree his course could be challenging, but you will definitely learn A LOT. He will also help you acquire great skills and guide you! He is one of my fav professors and he puts so much effort and time if you're willing to learn or get better at something. He is a great educator just be ready to read and write
