If you're ready to put demonstrate effort in this class, Professor Glasman is great! Warning: If you're prone to missing classes, steer clear!
To do well you have to BE ON TIME or he might freak out, bring the Vaccai book daily, and act super interested. Make sure to practice with him lots before midterms/finals because his grading is strongly based on your integration of his 'pointers for singing well'. He is very helpful and makes up office hours all the time for those who want it.
He is great and very knowledgable in what he is teaching...
If you want an easy A in Music 1A then take this guy because he gives lots of extra credit. The only thing that sucks is you have to give a presention with or without a group, and you have to attend two concerts.
One of the greatest directors I have ever met. Honestly, the class wouldn't be 1/32nd as good without Dr. Glasman!
His attendance and lateness policy is pretty mean, but his extra credits are awfully kind. (basically, you get an excuse to go to concerts and recitals :) ) As a teacher, he is amazing! Really, if you have any interest in singing whatsoever, just take the class. (And don't be late like me!)
Very well trained. Great instructor. Always available. Odd sense of humor. Doesn't give up on us!
A great instructor and a conductor. One thing I like the most is he truly loves music. Very knowlegeable and reliable person. So much fun in his class!!
Dr. Glasman is amazing! The Vintage Singers course with Glasman is about as challenging as you can ask it to be. It's also extremely rewarding! If you have time and you love singing, this class is for you!
Dr. G is a G! De Anza Chorale could not get any better without Glasman. He is just that awesome! The class might be a little better if it met more often for shorter periods, but there's always going to be something that gives. For this instructor, the time is way worth it!
Great class. Great Music. Instructor is well organized and has a great sense of humor.
Dr. Glasman has high expectations for his students, but as long as you meet all of them, getting an A won't be too hard. He often says things to scare people into shaping up, but seldom follows through with it. I really appreciate that he assigns songs based on areas where students need the most improvement.
Great class! I have learned so much. I met my new GF in that class. :-)
Great teacher for beginners and experts alike. He always puts over 100% in every class and if not, he'll often tell everyone what's wearing him down. I highly recommend him, just don't ever be late for his class. x)
Dr. G is amazing! He's passionate about music and makes you want to learn your part. Take him. :)
This is my favorite class, BUT If you're in it for fun, take it pass/fail. TRUST me! You don't want to screw around with your GPA, and Dr G can be a tough grader, particularly on attendance and on pitch-matching. So if you take it for a grade, take his system VERY seriously! That said, he is incredible, changed who I am.
The Vintage Singers are the most amazing choir I have ever sung in. Dr. Glasman combines high expectations with good fun! :-)
Very funny and willing to work with you.
Talented and fun to work with. Take his choir classes! You will love it.
Best choir director I have ever had. Strict, and gets work done quickly and efficiently, but in a lighthearted manner that makes the course 100% enjoyable as well as constructive. You will not be disappointed!
Dr. Glasman is an awesome teacher. He's really funny! He cares about students and offers lots of help. 13A can be tough if you don't have much experience, so be prepared to work hard and go to his office hours a lot. He really wants his students to succeed and to improve. He is a person who loves what he does and does it really well.
Dr. Glasman is a very energetic and dedicated instructor. If you are willing to take the class as seriously as he does you will learn a lot. In my experience some teachers treat office hours as a chore, not Dr. Glasman, he expects you to come see him if you are experiencing problems. My musicianship has greatly improved under his guidance.
Dr. Glasman really cares about his students. He is willing to do whatever it takes to help you out but YOU have to make the effort to go talk to him. His study guides are a fair representation of the tests. He offers a lot of extra credit. Study what he tells you to and you'll be fine.
Dr. Glasman is an amazing teacher. He takes what he does seriously and knows how to make it fun for the students. The warm ups are always very entertaining and effective, and the songs we get to sing are beautiful selections from non english languages. I've taken classes with him four times now and my voice gets better every time. :)
The most amazing vocal teacher I have ever had!I've improved so much from taking his voice class and his vintage class. He takes what he does seriously & truly cares.Just don't goof around in his class or disrespect him.If you show that you care too, he will work with you.A good class for those want to get better as a vocalist & are committed tp it
Glasman has a passion for teaching but he is a bit biased. On off days for him, it shows and may be unfair. He has office hours for those wanting help, but it doesn't mean he'll give it. He might send you away saying there's nothing he can do without even trying. For those feint-hearted or sensitive.
If you don't want to get an A, take his class. If you want to learn Nothing, take his class. He's hopeless~
Dr. Glasman is knowledgeable, funny, caring and dedicated. Easy 'A' if you do the work. Extra credit is always available and he will meet any student, at any time, even outside his office time. Best class I have had at De Anza, so far (and this is my 6th quarter).
Vintage singers rock! Dr. G. is amazing! You need to be a serious student and show up on time. But what you get is unmatched and unforgettable.
This professor is the best I have ever met. He is willing to answer every questions and stays in the classroom until everyone leaves. Although my English is not good enough, he gave extra credits generously so I finally got an A on his class. Put more efforts and you will get a nice grade!
Like all teachers he has thinks about his teaching methods that I like, and dislike... Btw if you're a bad test taker I suggest maybe a different teacher. He tends to make them a little harder than they should be.
He is so optimistic. His optimism encourages not only me but the rest of my class to sing with confidence. He is very helpful during class and his office hours. He doesn't put anyone down, he's very silly, and is such a pleasant man to sing/learn with.
He has been the best vocal instructor I've ever had. He knows what he's talking about and will bend over backwards to see you succeed. Just do the work and be interested. Never be late and put in effort to learn. It shows how much passion he has for the art. If you are a beginner, this teacher is the best choice for you.
He's very professional and kind. He's the best. Very detailed tests but he makes studying something to look forward to because he brings out what's interesting and important. Don't miss out- he's really good!
Easy A as long as u do all of the assignments. Tests are fairly easy cos he tells you questions that he gonna ask u in the tests. Attendance is not mandatory however he gives u 2 point extra credits for each day u show up and participate. I barely read the book and still get good grades on the exams. Listening is the hardest part though.
grouchy, micro-manages, aggressive sense of humor, condescending
Greatest ever! Knowledgeable, funny, patient, helpful, caring, honest and creative. I learned so much from him.
His best attribute is that he helps you believe in yourself. Confidence builder!
One of the best voice teacher that I ever had, even better than my previous expansive private teacher.
Glasman was awesome! I would tell anyone who is interested in taking this course to take him. He is very understanding and definitely wants all his students to succeed. Tests are not difficult as long as you take good notes, listen to the listenings, and pay attention to what he says because he gives you answers that'll be on the tests.
Good teacher. Gives out a lot of extra credit. Getting good a good grade is not a problem if you 1. pay attention in class 2. do all the preparatory reading and listening, and 3. study for exams.
I would recommend taking Dr. Ilan Glasman's class any day. He's a fantastic teacher. He does not tolerate indiscipline, which I admire a lot. He will put in a lot of effort & help you succeed if you show equal amount of interest & dedication. Easy to get A's. And he's funny too. :)
His class is easy, but beware - the way he talks makes it seem way harder than it actually is, so don't be intimidated. He's very lenient. Taking this class really did make my appreciation for music increase. Lots of reading!
Awesome teacher! Dr. Glasman is very professional and very helpful.
He is very willing to help students who struggle in his class and he always offers extra credits to whom want to boost their grade; however, there is a lot of hw: five exams, 2 concert reviews, and a group presentation.
He is great. You won't come out with a voice like Mariah Carey but you'll come out with more confidence and more talent, which is most important. He's very understanding and the sweetest professor you could ask for. He's who will help you treat your stage fright.
Glasman seems intimidating at first but he's is very nice on a personal level. He is very willing to help and always provides extra credit opportunities. There is a lot of reading but as long as you do them the tests are straight forward. You are required to attend 2 concerts and do 1 group project towards the end of the quarter. Recommend! :)
He can be nice but also a bit off-putting at times, even with the good students. Class is easy as long as you participate, attend everyday, and try your best. There are 2 midterms and the final is your choice of whatever song/genre you want. Oh, and a concert to attend, which is easy points.
Glasman's lectures are boring but he does try. Sometimes he types main points on a word doc while he's lecturing and you can copy those for notes, but it's pretty disorganized. He provides a lot of extra credit opportunities and wants everyone to pass. Make sure to keep up with the reading and the listenings! Super important!
This classteacher changed my life. I never knew how much wonderful music has been written over the past 1000 years. Glasman is very good at presenting esoteric music to students inundated with popular culture. He makes learning fun and really wants everyone to do well. He's kinda cute, too. :-)
WE have been singing for only two weeks and we already sound so good. Great class, great conductor, great friends made!
My very first fall quarter, I took Music 1A to enhance my love for music. Glasman changed my life. He encourages me to think of life as music in some aspects and he's so encouraging and inspirational, always there for you. His passion increased my passion. Thanks to him, I truly have a bigger grasp on the value of music
At first glance Glasman may seem like a easy going prof. that wants you to pass but he is arguably one of the worst teachers in the music dept. His lectures are unorganized, he's rude more often than not, and he seems to enjoy throwing struggling students under the bus rather than reaching out to them .
He loves music and teach us enthusiastically. If you attend every class and sing hard, you can get A.
You can only set up help appointments via email. He does not know how to save face. I feel like he cares more about teaching, performing & the program. If you're late, he has no mercy. Nice guy, but would never take again. I couldn't wait to get out of his class 3 weeks in. Needed the units. Bring your books ALWAYS.
DR. G. is talented, helpful and sweet. He tells you exactly what you need and grades fairly. I am a better singer and a more responsible student thanks to him.
Vintage Singers was my favorite class last quarter. I am not a music major but I took this class and have met so many nice people. The music is great and Dr. G. is a great teacher. You need to learn your music quickly in order to keep up- but it is very worth it and the performances are fun.
Best teacher ever!
Actually, he is a strict teacher. If you are late for minutes for class, it means "late." There are also many tests and assignment and one presentation. However, I can say that he is also easy to pass teacher. Tests are not hard, and he gives extra credit on each exams. Students have to go to concerts, but it helps me have more interesting.
His class is not unreasonably hard. He is just teaching at a college level. Come on time, pay attention and write down everything he says as it will be on the test. His tests are not just the usual multiple choices but also short answers/essay. Make sure you study hard, his tests can be tricky sometimes. However he is helpful and clear so ask away
I have never sung before and was terrified in front of audiences. Dr. G. worked with me and now I am comfortable and more confident.
Amazing teacher! My singing has definitely improved. Super nice, really cares for each and every student. Offers plenty of help outside of class, and is constantly praising students. I couldn't recommend him enough. Midterms are easy if you practice (one on one) with him beforehand. Doesn't just teach you how to sing, but how to perform.
If you have good memory, take it.
Dr. Glasman loves his job and does everything so we can get an A. But the class itself requires lots of reading and remembering. U need passion and assiduousness to get a high grade in this class. He is very friendly and accessible so don't be shy. Unfortunately I'm not the type of student who likes this class so didn't enjoy it that much.
He is quite rude and indifferent sometimes. If you are a beginner, choose another teacher.
Dr. G. is smart, talented and organized. He is funny and is good at explaining things. He insists on punctuality and offers extra credit when needed.
Dr. G is an excellent professor! He really knows his stuff and definitely pushes his students out of their comfort zone. Just be weary, sometimes he can get a little moody, so stay on his good side. Other than that, he's a pretty solid choice and overall a great teacher!
he's alright
This is a long overdue review. I took him for several semesters, even opting to do it for no credit. His choir is a lot of fun to participate in. The music is above average difficulty, but thats what makes it fun. I stopped attending because I graduated, but I encourage others to take the class.
If you love music you will love Dr. G. He brings out the best in all of us, chooses great music and insists we do the best we can. He gives opportunities for student leadership through conducting and creation of small groups.
I truly enjoyed taking his MUSI1a class, I learned so much about the history of music! Make sure you work hard (that means studying XD) and show that you care (showing up to class on time is a necessity), and hell be a super enjoyable instructor!
Dr. G. is a great teacher! I had ZERO confidence in my own singing before I took his class. He is very positive and encouraging. He will help you find your confidence. I am still not a great singer. But I am better than I was and I am not afraid to go to Karaoke night!
Are people not allowed to leave an honest, logical review? This is like the 6th time me or anyone else's classy review was deleted simply because we didn't put "awesome". Long story short, man is passionate and has good intent, however steer clear if you have social anxiety. He absolutely doesn't know how to work with individuals with it.
This is my first college class. I love this professor. He makes the learning fun!
I was failing and got so depressed I wanted to give up. Mr. Glasman met with me and helped me create a study plan and life calendar. I just saw that I passed and I am thrilled. I will be a better student thanks to his encouragement and belief in me
No online class page, class curriculum is super unorganized. Teacher can be rude, disrespectful, impatient. Appears annoyed when asking for help or talking about a topic semi-related
Solid choice! Understands what students need, is very clear and extremely helpful.
Amazing choir experience! It must be a very tough job getting all of us on the same page! He is talented and funny! I can't wait until next quarter!
good choice if you really are interested in western music. but his tests are really hard! a lot of points to remember and even open note is unorganized and hard to find. very strict and not flexible. but if you study hard and love it so much, you will enjoy.
He is a moody person and can be very mean when he is in a bad mood. But as long as you show a good learning attitude then he will be very caring and respectful.
He cares if you do. Very encouraging and approachable.
Dr. Glasman is a gem here at De Anza. His singing classes have helped me develop better breathing technique & given me the opportunity to perform in front of my peers. You are required to attend 1 concert. There are 2 midterms (you'll be performing Italian songs). The final performance is a "showcase" that any De Anza student can attend.
Quarantine Zoom Edition! Prof Glasman still has so much energy and dedication even when it came to online class. How online choir works is that everyone would be on mute (so that there's no delay) and he'd play the piano & conduct for us. He's very patient and willing to help out those who need help with their parts. He has some lovely jokes too.
A lot of homework and his lecture was kinda boring. However, he seems to be a good and nice teacher. I really liked how he handled the class but he left us in the middle of the quarter!? It was really confusing.
This is my first college course. Dr. G. is energetic and makes the material fun. I look forward to more great classes.
I have taken many of Dr. Glasman's classes over the years, including Beginning Singing (MUSI13A), both choirs (MUSI20, MUSI21), and Music Appreciation (MUSI1A). Of all the professors I know he is the most passionate, and is always working to assist students and improve his teachings. Be punctual and engaged, and he will give you the world.
Do not learn and study with the de anza music department. Stay away.
He's such an amazing person, you can see his passion for music, never gets tuired of helping students, chatting after class, standing in 2 hour lectures. Tells lots of jokes, PLS LAUGH:( he deserves so much love and laughs in class fr. He's kind. Just study bfr exams, take advantage of extra credit opportunities, show up, ask 4 help. I love him sm!
He's really great! Truly loves teaching and helping his students as much as possible. Highly recommend
In spite of the college cutting classes- he maintains a strong choral program, offering many singing opportunities. He loves his students and he loves the music.
Professor Ilan is very knowledgable and funny. He makes class interesting and engaging.
Cool dude makes difficult material fun. No Canvas shell but he communicates through email which totally works
Great music choices. Concert collaboration with band lots of fun
Music 1D rock and roll is a great class. He said it was his first time teaching it but I thought he was refined and knowledgable. Great music and fair grading,
Interesting course. Easy quizzes every week that are open-note (not open book), so as long as you take good notes and review the book you'll be fine. Final is open-note open book, but the notes are provided for you so you literally don't have to study. Lenient grader.
Choir is my favorite class, and Glasman is by far my favorite professor. He's funny, passionate, talented, the works. Taking choir or beginning singing is a good option for anyone who needs an escape from challenging STEM classes.
Great musician Great music
This teacher is a wonderful conductor and very professional. You can take the class six times! I love a cappella music.
Glasman is an amazing professor who keeps the class engaging, even online. He's passionate, patient, and always willing to help. Try unstuckstudy for easy study prep.
Thank you for the wonderful memories!
