Curves his test a lot all the way up to 80% for a class average. Has great review sessions, so go to them. If you know how to do the review questions, you'll do fine on the tests.

He is a great teacher! He really knows what he is talking about and is very willing to help you if you need it. He curves all tests/quizes. He lectures 2 days a week and then does hmwk help on fridays! Highly recommended!
I highly recommend him. The tests are somewhat hard, but he curves all tests and quizzes, and grades hw on effort. M/W are lectures and F is help/review session. All class materials (including old tests) are posted on a network drive. Will take him again for 305.
Great teacher, super willing to help you out if you dont undestand, class is fun and easy
I was frusterated at first because his accent makes it a little hard to understand him. But he's super nice and will go as far as he needs to to make sure you understand the material. Great teacher!
Impossible to understand. He is a very easy grader, and he will practically do your homework for you if you ask him, but it's because he can't teach you anything. Take his classes for easy grades, but not if you want to learn anything.
He was an extremely nice guy and very willing to help, but the whole class I was in still had a hard time discerning what he wanted for his papers and assignments. Despite asking him once or twice a day to clarify. That was pretty frustrating, but other
Hard to understand, with the accent. He honestly wants you to do well, always available for help. Tests are straightforward, and he gives practice tests for every test. Take him, he is a good guy.
Prof. Kim is a good teacher and tries very hard to make everyone do well. Each midterm he adds enough points to each test so that the median grade is 80. He is hard to understand but if you really try the class is not so bad. Also he has a TA that is really helpful. I would recommend him as a professor.
This is a pretty hard class. But i heard he was better than Zang. Has an acent which makes it hard to follow. Study the study guide for you will likely to see it on the test. He is availible for help almost anytime.
Really cares about the class, conducted a midterm course eval & showed the class the results, then worked to improve on areas we commented on. Tests are pretty rough especially the final. Homework is worth the time, be sure to go to the homework sessions, the TA goes through each problem and helps prepare you for the test. Best stats prof at WWU
If Kim would speak up and work on his english accent things would be much better. The learning curve for replacing his r sounds with whichever english phonic it's replacing is difficult at first. As a teacher and a person he's great. Very willing to help, and you can tell he's caring. I just couldn't hear him well enough. He's the only one tea
Wonderful teacher! He gives a great practice midterms, and his PowerPoint lectures are great to draw from for the test, you get a page of notes to put definitions and formulas on for the test. Definetely a fair grader and good experience overall. Sit in the front because he is a little soft spoken, but very sweet man.
Kim is awesome! While the subject is hard and so is his accent he loves what he does and it shows. He gives relevent HW problems and gives great practice test (these problems should be put in your notes for the test). He has regular office ours, and extra availability if you need it. Sit close to the front so you can hear him. Enjoy, he is great!
such a nice prof :)
Uses the same book for both sections so it saves you some money. He really cares what you think! Takes a class survey mid-way through and actually acts on class feedback. Hard to understand at times, but if you go to class and use his PP slides, you'll do fine. He wants everyone to do well and will help you to get there.. Highly recommended!
Took 205 from another prof and didn't know what was going on. Kim gives you a study guide, easy homework points, and helpful lectures. Take him over someone else.
He is a very good professor. I did terribly in DSCI 205 and hardly understood anything...but in Kim's class, I understood very well and even got an A! He gives lots of helpful homework and very good study guides that help you out a lot on his tests. This isn't fun material but he does a good job making it understandeable.
Great prof. hard to understand at times and a little soft spoken but he has great homework assignments that you can really learn from because he has friday labs when a TA basically does the homework in front of you and explains everything.
Very helpful prof. Homework assignments really help. 2 pgs of notes for midterms and 4 pgs for finals. Like him SO much better than Zhang. I really struggled with stats but would definitely suggest him over anybody.
He is awesome. Lets you have 2 pages of notes for the exams. Homework is helpful. He does a good job of clarifying. Overall just a nice guy who really cares about you learning the material.
Kim is awesome. tests are fair and he explains everything well. make sure you have good notes for the tests. he is actually really funny! dsci 305 is so much better than 205
Kim is awesome!!!He is super fair- tests are curved, homework assignements are easy especially since the answers are gone over the week before in class, and there's extra credit if you go to class. Pretty much just go to class and you'll get a lot of extra points. I loved the class
Kim is a great teacher. He cares about getting the message across to students. The 305 class can be imtimidating to students who stuggled with 205, but Kim is a very layed back teacher. He gives practise exams that are very very similar to tests, lets you take notes into the tests, and homework is pretty much done for you. I would recomend him!
I barely passed Stats 205 and was dreading taking this class. Kim is awesome, his class is almost too easy. (But who's complaining?) Plus the TA is SOOO much better than in 205. I learned so much in his class and its very complimentary to MKTG 381. I don't know how it could get better. He also offers EC in class, so GO!
Great professor!!! Extremely helpful and super nice guy. He really wants all this students to do well. Do your review and practice tests and you will be fine on the midterms or final. I would def recommend him for anyone.
Very hard, but he's very helpful.
Having been out of 205 for a couple of years, put me in a challenging spot, but if you pay attention and practice the assignments, the review, and practice tests, you will do fine. Most who fail his class are because they miss an exam. Other than that I liked it. Sometimes it is hard to understand his wording. He also speeds through powerpoints.
I was worried about taking this class, but it's almost impossible to fail. He offers in class extra credit exercises. Homework is almost guaranteed 100% if you attend the friday session. I wasn't understanding anything from his long powerpoints, but his practice exams and review questions lay it all out for you.It ended up being a pretty easy class
This course was easy at first and it slowly picked up in difficulty. Do your homework and attend the homework sessions. Attendance isn?t mandatory but points are given when there is after lecture handouts to complete. Professor Kim, great guy very smart and helpful in and out of class, any questions that I had I went to his office hours and got
Kim Is the BEST teacher to take this class with. He explains everything very well right before each test and his practice tests are very helpful. Plus he gives you cheat sheets to use. Go to every homework help session and go to class everyday. You get extra credit which really helps your grade in the end.
You don't need the book if you understand the material being taught in lecture and the help session; therefore, the latter is not for copying homework, but for solidifying the lecture material. It's a fast paced class, but well organized. The professor is helpful, good at using examples, and moderately engaging. But don't expect an easy A:)
This is the professor that you want for DSCI305. Extremely knowledgeable and the lecture materials and lecture itself is very good. Practice exams and cheat sheets will make your life easy. This is an easy class to pass at 60%, but do not expect an easy A. Strongly recommended for DSCI class.
Good professor who really know his stuff. If you don't understand a concept, make sure to talk to him.
I hate stats more than anything, but Ilhyung is the man. One of the most organized, helpful, knowledgeable profs I've had. He makes a terrible subject bearable. So helpful with exam prep stuff and there is extra credit in class a lot so make sure to go. He is awesome at explaining things so speak up if you're confused because it's a tough subject.
Illhyung is a good professor. His accent makes it difficult to understand what he's saying. His lectures are long and boring. The funny thing is, he admits his lectures are boring. What helped me get through his class was the reviews and practices he posts on canvas, with the answers attached. It was better than the review days.
He is the man. Make sure you go to class, there is random extra credit every week! His accent is difficult to understand but you can tell he really knows his stuff. Always willing to help
Professor Kim is the man. He is very clear on what he expects from you and very clear about what will and will not be on the midterms. The homework can be tricky sometimes but the help sessions clear all that up for you. always go to class because he is constantly giving extra credit for showing up.
Kim is the man. He really wants kids to understand. Questions are encouraged and accepted in class. Also he'll bust out a pretty funny joke on occasion. I would totally take one of his classes again. He gives extra credit about once a week.
Ilhyung is an intelligent man and a great human being, but DSCI 305 was irritating. Western requires professors to cover too much material in too short of a time. Ilhyung BURNS through the material. His thick accent made taking notes tough. I will pass the class with an A, but I will not remember the material and take much with me in into my career
Kim is very nice, quiet, and funny. I took DSCI 205 2 years ago and forgot most of it, but he is very helpful and thorough. The grading scale in his class is nice because it's almost impossible to fail and easy to get at least a B. Always come to class because he gives extra credit points!
DSCI 305 is a very hard class (in my own opinion). Chen knows this, and he tries really hard to make it clear to the students. He is ALWAYS there to help you when you need it. Lots of homework, but also gives lots of extra credit (in class yellow sheets that are there just for participation). He changes his grading scale, and it saved my life.
This class is dense and BORING. It starts out easy but by then end he is burning through material and its pretty tough. That being said he is a nice guy, is clear in his expectations and offers a lot of extra credit if you go to class. Hard materialeasy grading.
Ilhyung is definitely the man as other comments have mentioned! Definitely go to class since he offers extra credit at the end of each topic, he drops your lowest midterm score if you score higher on the final, and overall made statistics bearable. Go to class, do the hw, and you will get at least a B!
Ilhyung Rocks!! Take him for statistics. If you retained anything in 205, you will definitely be fine in stats. First 2 midterms are basically over 205, just a bit more indepth. Final is cumulative, but 50% mix of old midterms and new material. Extra Credit, and hw can really boost grade. I used my 205 book more than the 305 book
Ilhyung makes applied business statistics fun. Bringing a sense of humor alongside an affinity for structure creates a class that is easy to follow along. He does expect you to have gone over the material before the lectures as he goes at a fast pace, limiting the ability to take notes from his powerpoints.
Homework every week but help sessions when homework's due go over answers. Long lectures but helpful. In-class credit given lots which improved my grade by a whole letter grade. Tests are a little tricky, just known how to do Practice Exam problems and definitions. Also go over review questions. Tests will be exact format as practice exams.
Put in a little effort and you'll get an A. If you do your work and come to class it is super easy.
Ilhyung is a great teacher and really wants his students to understand the material. The homework assignments aren't too lengthy and the tests are multiple choice. The lectures do get rather dull and its hard to pay attention, but this is a statistics class. Overall he's a great guy and will help you succeed.
Professor Kim is by far one of the best teachers I have had at Western. This class is challenging, especially if you don't keep up with the course load and come to class but if you put in the effort it is easy to get an A. The concepts are difficult, but Professor Kim will explain and make the time for you and provide resources to know expectations
Gives extra credit on in-class assignments, so go to class. Study hard for the tests and you'll get at least a B+. The tests are very similar to practices on canvas, but require a lot of studying. I never got below 95% on an exam, but then again I'm a straight A student XD
This is the most challenging class I have taken at WWU. Very deep and detailed concepts, but Kim does a great job explaining. While the test is the hardest thing I have ever done, he does have a curve, and will make sure you dont fail the class. R is interesting, and very useful in statistics. Take this class; the benefits outweigh the negatives.
Take 305 with him!! very nice guy. He offers up to a max of 24 EC points. Go to class bc you only get the EC if you are present in class. His class is very similar to George's if u took 205 with him. You get 2 cheat sheets on exams, Material is not hard if you do the practice exams. The only tricky things are the TF questions and conceptual stuff.
He may be a little hard to understand at times, but I seriously like the guy. Took him for DSCI 305 and 407, huge fan of both classes. Analytics minor ftw. btw i got the highest score on all exams in 305 and 407 till someone swooped me by 1/60 points on the 407 final :/ feels bad man
I hate stats, just very boring. He's a good prof and its easy to do little work and end up with a C but he's just not engaging at all and it can be a little difficult to understand him at times.
Kim is a great professor, the class can be difficult especially if you don't pay attention. He is very organized and has great lectures. The course content is the hard part. Statistics can be very boring and repetitive. Exams are in a computer lab but online. Open note, book, google, anything. Don't rely on google to help you though.
Kim is awesome. Boring lectures but he's super nice and a lot better than 205 professors. HOWEVER, the class material is more difficult. Kim does a lot to help though, in Launchpad he posts a PRACTICE QUIZ a week before the quiz and it is damn near the same as the quiz. It even shows you how to solve each problem and you can use browser during test
This class isn't too bad as long as you watch the lectures and participate in class. Kim is a cool guy who makes stats a little more interesting.
He is a pretty chill guy, he knows what he's talking about and has every lecture perfectly timed out. There are only 5 homework assignments and they give you all the answers. The class is flip styled, so make sure you go to class b/c he actually works through problems in class.
I HATED 205, but Kim showed me a great side to stats in 305!! He is one of if not the best professor I've had at WWU. What was expected of us was clear and he was accommodating of sickness. The tests were the exact same as the practice tests he uploaded a week before.
His lectures are online, so make sure to look over them before going to class. Professor Ilhyung is passionate about the subject, making it an enjoyable DSCI 305 class. He goes over exercises in class and reviews practice questions before tests. Overall, take his class! Go to office hours or set up an appointment to ask questions; that's what I do.
I really enjoyed his teaching style, its a flipped classroom. This means you watch lecture videos outside of class and come to class to work on problems related to what you watched in the videos. Quizzes are online, open book, and open note. Easy to get a good grade if you put in the work! Would definitely take another course with him again
There are online lectures you watch before each class that are 30-60 mins. They're very boring and his voice is quite monotone in them. If you don't watch them though you'll have a hard time in class. He's a nice and funny guy. Clearly knows his stuff.
Professor Kim's online lectures are long but incredibly detailed and helpful. I recommend printing PowerPoint slides from lectures and taking notes on them as you can use them during tests. All tests are open book/open note but are tough. The final was very difficult. His response time to emails is very quick. Use office hours and don't skip class!
Kim is the man when it comes to learning the concepts and computational side of stats. I'm not going to say this class is easy with Prof. Kim, but you will learn A LOT about stats. I highly recommend him if you are planning on doing more stats at WWU. I would say he actually got me interested in stats way more than DSCI 205 did.
Exams are open note and pretty similar to the practice exams posted so if you do those you should be alright. Gives good lectures and provides a lot of resources for students (video lectures, several different practice exams, etc.)
This class is a challenge, but by challenging yourself you're getting a quarter with one of the most intelligent profs at WWU. He is definitely the man if you're looking to actually learn stats. Be aware the final is extremely hard. Prepare to study a lot and still do poorly. Class avg was a 51, and he does NOT curve anything
Kim is a great professor. He's obviously very bright and makes the very complex concept of stats at least doable. The quizzes are pretty tough, but open note. Beware though they're open book/notes for a reason. They're pretty challenging.
Take his class if you want to learn stats but dont expect to get a good grade. HIs quizzes and Final is super Hard. If you want a good grade then you should find some other instructor. He is very smart and intelligent but I am not sure if you are so its upto you.
Worst professor. No live class, not constructive during office hours. Long and confusing lectures. Super hard quiz which messed up my grades and had to switch to P/NP during online pandemic class. No curve for the online class during pandemic as well. Absolutely horrible, avoid him at all cost!
COV19/Online Remote: This class was hard. The class average on exams ranged from the high fifties to the low seventies. Video lectures were LONG and numerous. Homework had unlimited attempts and was what saved my grade, as it accounted for around 40% of the total grade. After the first exam, Prof Kim began doing quiz reviews, v helpful.
Class is hard. Take good notes. Hard tests. I took online which made it much easier. He lectures too fast so luckily I was able to pause a bunch. Final average was a 50%... homework is easy free points.
All classes are Asynchronous. Lecture videos are very long. Few things graded except for the exams. Tough grader. Overall poorly constructed course. Would not recommend this instructor.
Classes were asynchronous for what was listed a synchronous course. Long and dry lecture videos, but VERY thorough. Kim makes his test difficult, but they are doable if you put in the time.. as you must to understand stats. Final was extremely difficult, class average was a 41%. He usually rounds tests if class average <60%.
He was kinda like the worse version of prof Zhang. Very difficult to understand and lectures did not correlate to the tests very well. The HW wasn't that bad but the exams were nothing like the HW and the textbook was no help either. The class average on tests were in the D range, which says something about his teaching.
*Taken o/l during Covid* - Class is really async, 4 exams occurring every other week and homeworks due on the offweeks. Exams are hard but I never watched a single video, learn the practice exams well and you'll do okay without sitting through his immensely boring lectures. HW helps a lot, so do it until you get 100%. Avg on final was a 55%.
worst class ever!!!!
I can tell Kim was very wise in his class sessions but his tone was very boring. Students often didn't come to class after the first few days because he posts everything online and I think they feel like they can more likely pass the class by just studying themselves and not attending class. Fridays are the best, homework answers are provided.
If you're a marketing major, I highly recommend taking MKTG 381 first because this class answers the question "What if the stats portion of MKTG 381 was harder/more boring and way less applicable?" Lecture quality is about the same as Zhang from 205 but the course structure is much better IMO. If you don't already know the material, it'll be hard.
DSCI 305 is a weed out class. His exams are near impossible to get a decent grade on, he makes you watch hours of monotone, boring lectures before even coming to class. He does not do a good job of making stats understandable, and someone else should be teaching this class. You've been warned, try to take light classes when you get to DSCI.
Absolute waste of time. I can't believe this class is still offered because the course load is INSANE. Kim seems like a nice enough guy but there are SO MANY LECTURE VIDEOS. I guarantee you'll fall asleep listening to the often hour-long videos. Exams are near impossible and even if you study you'll score low. Waste of time and disappointment.
He has a very monotone voice that is hard to pay attention to. He also goes very fast in-person bc it's expected u watch lecture videos b4 class. Business Stat is just a shitty subject and I don't think he is to blame for it. Ur basically given HW answers, and he is understanding. Watch the lecture and exercise videos on 1.5x and take good notes!
This class sucked! Material was boring, professor was ok. He didn't make it interesting at all. It wasn't easy to ask questions during lectures but on Fridays you could ask questions during zoom meeting. Tests were taken online and grading scale was really easy. Should be easy to pass only needed 64% to get a C-.
I feel like a lot of people rate Professor Kim low because of the topic. I agree that the class was hard and not very fun, but I can't blame Professor Kim for that. He is very nice and understanding with accommodations. If you find the lectures too long you can change the speed for them. + everyone's grade gets waved so you only need a 52% to pass
Not a fun class, but professor was very kind. He makes it hard to fail the class as he will give extra credit when needed. Allways tries to help students.
Watch the lecture and exercise videos before the class they are discussed in, or you will feel lost. There are videos to watch before the first class so watch them because he starts lecturing on the first day. The textbook is not necessary. Take the practice exams they are similar to the tests. Participate in class and he will learn your name.
The material is hard to understand, but Prof. Kim does his best to make it accessible. I'm not great at math, but watching the lecture videos and going to class really helps. If you go to the lab sessions they give all the HW answers, so getting 100% on homework saved my grade. The exams are tough but all the material is reviewed in class/lectures.
There was five exams and 14 homework assignments. The homework assignment can be done in class during the lab and the professor does go over the assignment. exams are pretty hard, but if you study with the practice exam then you will do fine. the professor is great, I have a hard time understanding him sometimes but the work speaks for itself.
Well structured and taught class. If you put in the work and show up to class, then you have nothing to worry about. Exams are open note but very difficult. I didn't buy the book however I religiously watched and took notes for the pre-lecture videos and lecture.
Attendance is not necessary because he posts explanations on canvas but its good to attend the class to practice problems with him. He practices every single formula on paper and shows you how to use excel. Friday labs allow you to learn how to use excel and you get homework answers in the lab. TESTS ARE OPEN BOOK OPEN NOTE, just use excel to pass
Ilhyung is clearly knowledgeable about the subject and personally motivated by statistics, but he completely lacks the ability to convey that much. His lectures are dry and informative but simultaneously unengaging and difficult to sit through. Extremely difficult tests and class. Our class' midterm average was a 55/100; most students failed.
If you are new to programming, then this class is going to be brutal. The exams address little to no content from the assignments, and the lectures are a pain to understand. Get ready to grind the textbooks bc that's the only way you'll understand what is going on in class.
The course is: Applied Business Statistics and Analytics, but should be "Statistics and Analytics using R". The course is built around the coding language R and its software RStudio but they fail to require any comp. sci. as a pre-req. Even worse is that you aren't taught R at a fundamental level. If you haven't coded before be ready to struggle.
Kim is a great professor, I had him for both 305 and 407. He is great even with the tough learning curve of the R language. Overall expect this class to be a tough one, there is a great amount of concept you need to cover and learning R with it is really tough. Read and pay attention in lecture and you'll be fine. Kim will always help!
DSCI305 has potential but falls short due to a horrible midterm and final. The class is confusing at times, but the MW lectures are great. I like his teaching style and presentation a lot, but it is very difficult to interpret the lectures into the coursework. The Friday lectures are rolls of the dice with quality. I do recommend going, however.
One of the hardest classes I've taken. I the exams were the main reason as none of the stuff we covered in class/homework really prepped you for them. I attended every class, took lots of notes and did all the homework assignments.Lectures were good and he is very sweet, but the final exam was the worst grade I've ever gotten but they are curved.
He's very nice and responds fast if you email him! Although I took the class online the course is still very difficult. The online lectures are often hard to stay focused to and the textbook is exactly like his lectures. He is very helpful when it comes to the assignments! But the tests are difficult due to the time limit which is very short.
DSCI305 is a challenging course, but Prof. Kim's lectures are engaging. The exams are tough, but using helpful study tools like unstuck study can make a big difference. Overall, the class is doable with dedication.
He's very sweet, but not the most amazing lecturer— but that's the usual curse of DSCI professors. ~2HW/weekly and GP every other week, based in R. Exams open note/internet/AI. Participation is EC.
Using RStudio is easy, but concepts are hard to understand. Lectures aren't always clear as it's very high-level and not easy to grasp. 4 group projects through the quarter. Exams aren't curved but are open AI.
This guy accused me of cheating/collaborating with another student because we had similar answers for multiple choice & number answers. This is an online class. I would take these exams alone & didn't know anyone. Going to take it to the board, he's a joke. Disrespectful too.
