He is handsome and strict. He graduated from SFU master and became an instructor here for business courses. For BUS216, I think it is not much difficult, but you need to spend a lot of time for it. You'd better attend his office hour to let him help you improve your assignment. His grade is a little bit tough, but trying your best you will be good.
He is really handsome!!! You will love him more if you don't take his class. He is strict and assigns lots of works to do, but you can really learn a lot from him! Either by works or his personal experience!
Ilia is great, he will motivate you all the time. Attending his office hour is helpful and enjoyable. But this is really a tough course, although no final, I felt that every week was like final. A lot of homework, group meeting, emails need you to do. Like a nightmare.
He is super handsome. When I saw him at first, I thought he is one of students, but he just sat the professor's sit. Btw, he is really strict grader and I think I'm a pretty good essay writer, he gave me B- for the course. Haha good luck.
Very good looking, really nice, an amazing prof who is definatly my favorite of all the profs. I took BUS216 which is a really good class, a lot of papers plus a group project which is 40% of the grade. Attend his office hours so he can give you feedback. Really cool to talk to even outside class. Attendance matters, so is participation.
Miss Ilia for his persuasive advice. He is really nice and I love him foreverrrrrr. Hope to see him next semester in office hour time.
Firstly he is a really handsome, smart and cute Russian instructor. Although we had a very tough time this semester for this course and devoted a Hugh amount of time, the effort is worth. We learned more important things in BUS216 class which is communicating with others practically, not just some academic knowledge. Thanks Ilia for your help:)
First, Ilia is an inspired and motivated instructor that he offered you a lot of business knowledge throughout the semester. Secondly, if you are interested in dedicating into business related industries in the future, you will find this course useful and valuable. Lastly, if you pay real effort and attend office hour, you will find it awesome.
Firstly, Ilia is an engaged and inspiring instructor who wants to support and help students by teaching many business essential skills. Secondly, he tried to help students collaborate with the team and work hard to get the satisfied result. This course requirement is relative high, but he has the fair rubric to evaluate student's performance.
A handsome teacher, a little bit cool but that makes him more charming. When he talks to you with smiling face, you will feel like facing to a Russian angel. Very excellent teaching style for students major in business. Beedie school should definitely hire him as an instructor.
Ilia is an instructor who willing to spend the time to interact with students, discuss what has happened in our daily life but not only the business knowledge in the textbook, he gives every student feedback and teaches you how real-world work (some students do not like this). But you will understand "hard work always pays off" in the end.
Wonderful instructor. Strict but fair. BTW, he is the smartest and most handsome instructor I have ever seen. Do not forget to join his office hour and workshop. They are really helpful. I learnt a lot not only academically but practically applying into life about business communication. Really miss the time learning with you.
He is very supportive of aspects of both academic and non-academic. He offers more than enough office hours and very valuable feedbacks. He is a good teacher and friend.
Best teacher ever. He devotes time and effort to helping students as much as he could. Nice and kind, willing to give valuable advice about fields outside the classroom. A lil bit strict in grading but as long as you're hardworking, you'll be fine.
Ilia helps a lot when you attend his office hours, makes it clear what he expects from you. Talking about participation grade, it doesn't matter what you say, you should talk as much as possible. Don't be late, submit on time, don't miss classes and ask for feedback as often as possible. He makes the course very interesting, often shares experience.
He's a great listener and helps you with mostly everything. learned a lot from him. he's really strict with presentations but at the end he's so kind.
Ilia is a great prof. He is a former FIC student so he can relate to you and give good advice about course selection, etc. In 200, he is very chill and easygoing, he always found something to talk about instead of the course material. He does get strict in 216, but he is still comparatively better than the other ones.
At first, you will hate Ilia but in the end, you will love him. He is not a bad teacher and actually teaches the class. His class is useful and will be useful in the future as well. Understand that business writing is hard in general as you need to be precise with the wording and format. Overall, Ilia is a teacher that genuinely teaches but hard
Most of time is reading PowerPoint and taking break.
Before I took this course, a lot of friends told me that his was very strict but actually i don't very agree with that. He was so nice and fair for every one. If you work hard but your member not good or not cooperation, don't worry. Just tell Ilia and he would change your grade would not be lower because of your group member. Trust me, choose Ilia
To be honest I think people either love Ilias class or hate it. Pros: you actually learn valuable things about writing business emails and presentation skills. Cons: his classes are (imo) boring because most of the time he just goes on very long rants (but some people like it). I personally find it tedious to attend his class but hes a nice guy.
Ilia as an instructor has so much value to offer to any student having been down the same road. Attendance being mandatory but flexible and office hours beneficial, his courses wont be a cakewalk for any student. However, taking advantage of the resources he has to offer will help in obtaining a good grade. An A+ is hard to get but achievable.
BUS216 with Ilia was challenging, not impossible to ace. You actually have to put in the work. So if you dont like to work, you probably wont enjoy his class. If you want someone to help you sharpen your skills and tell you where youre doing it wrong so you could be better, youll absolutely love his class and get a lot of value from it.
BUS200 wont be tough if you actually read the chapters. Theres online quizzes. Attending Ilias class helps you understand whatever you didnt get from the textbook. He answers all your questions and helps you in any way he can with the group project. I didnt like that the class was lecture heavy but he tries to make it as interesting as he can.
IIia is a really nice, kind and talkative Instructor. He is always willing to help students outside class. At the same time, Bus216 is not an easy course. It needs your qualified and solid English writing skills. You have to participate in the class frequently, or your participation marks will not be good. Pay full attention on how to write email
Ilia is a great professor. He treats the class like a workspace, meaning you have to act professional. And the fact I want to stress is 'PARTICIPATE' in his class. If you lay low, you won't get participation marks. Which is believe 15% ( please check). Believe me, you'll learn a lot of things in his class.
I took Prof Ilia for BUS200 in SFU. Super friendly with anyone who treats him like a friend and not a teacher (that's what he wants actually). He will spend time talking to students, having fun and will get the syllabus done in time too. Take him or you'll regret. For real, don't think.
Nice teacher
Ilia is the best BUS216 professor because he always: Encourage his students to step out of their comfort zone Consciously help his students as best as he can Show his passion, enthusiasm, and dedication in his teaching Give his students a taste of working in a professional environment Make tons of hysterical jokes :))
I took Ilia for both 200 and 216 and he is the best prof ever. He may be strict in grading, but I promise it will benefit you, especially if you're taking 216. He makes you work hard and cares much about the details. Attending his office hours is a must to get good feedback, or just chitchat if you have any concerns in life.
Ilia is the most helpful professor that I've ever met. He provides a variety of practical knowledge including his BUS216 class and weekly workshops. Furthermore, he also gives some of the best advice that I've had, including relationship handling, career development, emotional management, etc. It is simple to have high grades: just work hard.
If you ever get the chance to take the course with Ilia do so, but be ready to work hard. Ilia is a perfectionist and requires the same attitude to work from you. With this being said, he is a very thoughtful professor who gives good feedback and helps you succeed if you ask for his advice. I definitely enjoyed BUS216, must-have class I'd say.
The best professor Ive had so far. If you work hard and stay consistent you can definitely get a B+. Youll have to work even harder and go above and beyond to get A or A-. Always go to the office hours for valuable feedback. Ilia can be really amazing if you follow him and try to be the best.
Ilia makes you work for what you aim for. Make sure you always show up during office hours & keep on asking for feedback. As long as he knows you're hard working, he will appreciate it. Kind of intimidating at first, but can be funny too. His lectures are mostly based off his own life / class related examples. Get ready to read the book preclasses.
Ilia was a very tough teacher in his on way but he really wants the student to improve in their communication skill and being an active listener. The course is more on the practical sides about team works and assignment that will needed in the future. He gives a really good feedback during the office hour which can help us to improve our grade.
Ilia will help you as long as you work for it. There are no "shortcuts" in this course. I took an intersession course so it was a bit more rigorous and time-consuming. However, it was worth it, giving me invaluable skills and experiences that are now on my résumé. Take this course with him if you are willing to work hard.
Ilia is a very good instructor. Give true feedback on performance.
Ilia is not a teacher who always smiles at you. He is a tough teacher who always pointed out your mistakes. He is also a tough grader, you need to do extra things to get a high grade. However, he is really a good teacher who taught me lots of useful business skills. He would also give some extra feedback during his office once a week. Appreciated!
For me Ilia has been more like a mentor. I have personally learnt a lot of important things from him like time management, how to deliver quality work and much more. He was always there to support me during the office hours and would reply to all of my course related texts in minutes. He teaches really well and I would take him for all BUS courses
The worst I have ever seen, skip at all cost
I don't know if I would take him again, he's really serious which often may seem rude, from my perspective. I got a B, which was a surprise for me, he really makes you work for your grade, so get ready to do things his way. Tip: DO NOT MISS ANY INTEXT CITATION, he's really strict with that.
Mr. Ilia Bykov is a wonderful mentor and his way of teaching is really interesting. He is very fair with everyone in assigning the grades. The thing I like the most about him was that he was always accessible 24/7 outside class to answer any query. For me, he is one of the best teachers I have come across till now.
He pushes your learning curve high by pushing you to learn by being self dependent but with clear guidelines, excellent mentoring and feedback.
He is a very patient teacher. Each assignment will give you a very detailed feedback. He replies to messages very quickly and always helps me solve problems in time.
Ilia is very good professor for Bus216. Don't blame him for your low grades. Course is in general difficult but if you are here for learning something for real world, he could help you in best possible way. His teaching is not just confined to textbook but also beyond book. Best part of his course is his office hours.
BUS200 with Ilia was a cake walk. He is very supportive and getting feedback on every assignment was really helpful. If you put extra effort, he will realise it and award for above 100 for some grade. His synchronise class was really fun! I waited every week for his class. He is surely a easy grader in Bus200 in comparison to Bus216.
Taking BUS200 was one of the bright choices that i made at FIC. He makes the course really easy and he is very accessible outside class, he makes you work for the grade but if you work hard you can score an A+ easily. As per grading he is very fair. Take him and you wont regret.
He is a very fair teacher. I didn't get very good grades, but that's my problem. I didn't manage my time well. If you work hard, you can get higher grades.
It is important to participate in the class if you want to get a good grade. His quizzes are relatively easy if you read textbook and follow his notes. He gives two chances at first quiz with same questions. It's important to have a good teammates in the group project since y'all get same grades. Don't hesitate to ask him questions feel free
Great class. Easy quizzes. Would take him again.
I had been recommended this professor by a colleague and didn't know anything about him. He made my business course experience the finest and most intriguing. He is an excellent instructor and I admire the way he teaches, provides feedback and depicts business. He inspired me to work harder every day and become more enthusiastic about it.
Professional. Interactive. Always ready to help. Interesting.
He is one of the best professors I got so far, very inspirational and professional. The course is so organised and well planned. Right at the beginning of every lecture, we will have a business communication news session, which keep all of us in touch with the business world. We also learn how a professional team works including business writing.
Ilia is the best. The best. He will make you work for it, but he awards risks. He will be the most charming professor ever. Had the best time with him. Lots of group participation, and make sure to contribute a lot in the team work. Most fun class I ever had. I'm thankful for a professor like him!!!
Ilia is a good professor in terms of business but is a very tough grader. He makes you work for the grades. Participation in his class matters a lot. Be silent and youll receive no grades. However, he makes classes fun and interactive. Really make students be more interested in the business world.
Basically, just read the lectures for every chapter. Really have to study by yourself with a bunch of hardcore projects and assignments, which is not easy to get a high grade in his class. Do not really recommend him.
CHOOSE ONLY IF YOU ARE HERE TO LEARN. You will see yourself gaining so much knowledge when you listen and follow what he says in each and every class. Nothing comes easy, and Ilia is the personification of that message.
After taking his course, I can say that please don't. He does not teach anything in class, you have to learn it yourself from textbook. (Then what is the point of lecture??, I can just self taught without paying you) He does not offer any help, other than saying 'talk to me in Office Hour'. DONT TAKE IT, he only cares about a few students.
I previously took BUS200 with him, and always find studying business to be so aspirational and fascinating. I appreciate the way he challenges everyone to perform to the best of their abilities. I think you should have the confidence to establish a connection because he adapts to your understanding individually and helps you improve as a person.
I highly recommend Ilia to be your professor he helps you in and out of class giving u the best support. Also just don't miss anything and ask smart question then you would be fine.
Personally i think BUS200 is harder than BUS216(both took it with him). The 200 class has more things to apply and more things to learn. But taking it with Ilia you would have a clear way to 216.
Take his classes for building a great foundation for your whole MBA.
Young but disciplined. Listen to his instructions and you will excel. flaunt his rules to your detriment. Participation and attendance in class and group meetings. straight-to-the-point answers. Finally, be polite and respectful.
He starts class with a question about what is happening in the business world and students comment that goes on almost all the class time Group you are4 the project is what gives him ur attendance and participation,so he can grade u Choose your group wisely He is very demanding, tough grader but gives good feedbacks on how to adjust the assignments
I advise all students to take BUS200 with Ilia. He provides real-life examples and cases based on his knowledge and experience outside the textbook and theory. His lectures are never boring, and 4 hours seems like a 45-minute lesson. Participation matters in this class. You will succeed if you do everything on time and pay attention closely.
I definitely recommend taking BUS216 with Ilia. Lectures are very valuable for both academic and personal life. Ilia's way of teaching and engaging with students makes him a great prof. This course requires a lot of team works. Participation in class matters. I suggest enrolling in his class as soon as possible because his class gets full quickly.
It is not a very difficult course if you read the textbook properly and attend the classes. If you want a high participation grade, be an active participant in class. If you have any questions, attend his office hour.
His 216 classes are very practical and fun. You have to be very active to get a high participation grade. Analyze your classmates carefully and choose members for your group project. Group projects deserve 40% of the overall grade.
Ilia is an amazing instructor, so helpful and understanding. This class requires lots of work and class participation. You can really improve your writing and presentation skills. The group project is the main assignment you will have, and it is extremely cool but also hard, so choose your teammates wisely. Overall amazing and extremely useful.
Ilia makes the course concepts very easy and light to understand. Even for anyone new to business I would say his class is a go to. The grading is very clear and straightforward. If you wish to do well in this course, his office hours is a must to attend as his feedbacks are the key for success in this course.
Taking this class with Ilia is sure to boost your presentation skills as well as confidence. This course is very group work loaded (40% approx grade) and heavy so be prepared to commit to your group in order to achieve success in the course. Attend his office hours to get good feedbacks and support on your improvement.
Had him for 501 in UCW. Great professor, very engaging classes. Lot of workload, but you get to learn many things in return. Put in an effort, and he will give you good grades. Approachable, and he'll clear all your doubts. If you want to study, properly, highly recommend him. If you just want to pass with minimal work, look for other options.
Ilia is an amazing instructor, so helpful and understanding. This class requires lots of work and class participation. You can really improve your writing and presentation skills. The group project is the main assignment you will have, and it is extremely cool but also hard, so choose your teammates wisely. Overall amazing and extremely useful
The professor is good; however, he is strict in his grading. He is unclear with his grading criteria and gives grades to what seems appealing to him or what pleases the eye. It is a highly project-based course. Do not expect high marks even if you do really well. If you want to learn something or score high marks, he is not the teacher.
Toughest professor not recommend at all
the professor is very kind always understand the situation and always try to give the best he take no exam only projects are given
Should be nice to student, don't that much strictness need students.
Do not take this course with him!!!!!!!! He is so terrible. He doesn't teach anything in class and he is very intimidating.
If you don't teach anything in class, the students don't know where the points are deducted. He's not fit to teach. Choose another professor rather than him....
Not recommended overall; teach nothing in the class but test the textbook in the midterm.
He's a kind person but not a good marker.
the only thing that he cares about is APA.and if you are a foundation student or you are in your first semester don't take any class with him. number of good votes surprised me because he failed 3 out of 5 of my team members
Prof is good the way he teaches but tbh he will never teach anything in class which he will ask in exams, so start reading yourself and from the textbooks. He also is a tough grader and might give more marks to female students. Participation is a must and his classes are enjoyable. Only Downside: Tough Grading!!!
Amazing prof. With an engaging teaching style and deep industry knowledge, they create an enriching learning environment that makes complex business concepts accessible and enjoyable.
Taking Business 216, with Ilia Bykov was a transformative experience, not just academically but also in personal growth. His engaging teaching style and intertwining business theory with current events brought the subject matter to life, making each class a unique and practical learning experience. This course helped me confirm Business as my major
Business 200 with Ilia Bykov was extramely enlightening. His expert teaching not only imparted essential business knowledge but also fostered a deep understanding of core concepts. His ability to make complex ideas simpler is commendable. Ilia's enthusiasm for the subject was contagious, making every class an opportunity for discovery and growth.
Ilia is the best professor ever! His teaching style promotes interesting academic advancement, and by blending business theory with current events, he brings the subject matter to life, making every lesson a unique and practical learning experience. Ilia also provides useful feedback, pointing out areas where a student could make improvements.
Ilia's course has quickly become one of my all-time favorites! The lectures are filled with practical and useful content. I loved the In The News segment at the beginning of each class. The assignments are manageable if you read the material beforehand. The grading system is fair, the feedback provided is constructive
Fantastic lecture at all for all of my BUS courses, greatly recommended it!
Thank you Ilia! You gave my first A+ for all of my business courses at SFU!!
Fantastic experience so far for the Beedie lower division courses! Ilia is the best instructor so far I was taken!
I love this instructor, nice!
Ilia's class is so much fun as long as you follow up and do the work, I can certainly say it was one of my favourite classes. I was so happy each day to wake up and go to his class. He created a respectful and calm environment for everyone. He inspired me a lot in both life and educational aspect. Definitely never seen a professor as caring as him!
If you enjoy keeping up to date with economics or politics, this is the class for you. Professor Bykov allows an environment for open dialogue on a broad range of subjects, which is complemented nicely by his knowledge on a vast array of topics. Despite the lower grade, this has been my favourite class (and professor) in university thus far.
He provides such vague guidelines in the rubric and then explains what he wanted after handing back the marked assignments. Lectures are extremely boring with no proper format to teach anything before he sends you off to hastily put together a presentation with your group that prepares you for nothing.
Do not take this professor. He will ruin the way you approach school. The strenuous assignments will destroy you. He forces you to read textbook content that he doesn't talk about in lectures. He also makes no effort in providing constructive feedback catered to your learning as he is lazy. Only take this course if you want to lower your GPA.
Ilia is amazing. He tries really hard to help you develop as an individual. His assignments were long but it encouraged us to read the textbook and understand the content. We had to read the textbook before coming to class and in class we would try to apply it to real-life cases. all you have to do is show up to class and pay attention. Take him.
You should be able to do great if you put effort into showing up and listening to him in class. He puts a lot of emphasis on depth, whether that is in answers or understanding concepts. It's not a GPA booster if you don't even put in minimal effort. Honestly, all I did was attend class. I am still getting an A. I'm def taking him again. 10/10
Exams are based on textbook to make sure you can read and analyze text. In class, he works on our presentation and speaking skills- which helps us become more confident He is funny. participate in class because that will help you pay attention in class. 3 hr lectures are hard to stay focused but I learned its easy when u participate
A very stringent marker whose grading criteria is nothing short of obscure. Exam isnt from anything of the classes but rather strictly from the textbook-which we never go through. A lot of papers with a 2000+ word count.
Marks with hate his in heart, and goes up and beyond to make sure he does not help. Gives criteria after and takes marks off for the littlest thing.
The main complaint is that he didn't focus on the course itself. He spent 1/3 to 1/2 of every course just talking about personal stuff/ random advice. This isn't why I come to class. Then it seemed like he resented the class when they lost interest in this babbling and then took it out on us by marking harshly. I didn't expect this type of teacher.
The assignments were poorly explained and he just said "read the outlines and adjust your grade as you like". The outlines were several pages long and when I did follow them , the TA Vrushali marked different than the guidelines. WTF?
Other Bus profs give lots of help when it comes to exam time. He just wasn't very helpful during the course. He showed little interest in assignments or prepping us for exams. Avoid.
BAD! Shows favouritism, highest marks consistently went to female students. Lacks effective teaching. Class includes news recaps and presentations on weekly readings, but no real teaching is being done. He doesn't support student success and often reviews assignment expectations only after they're done. Lazy and eager to leave, avoid if possible.
A lot of people like him BUT he does not go over anything to do with the course, assignment expectations or teach anything in class really. It's mostly just a yap session for him about current events. He only gives brief guidelines AFTER the assignments on how to improve. Idk what I learned...just to type fast.
TA's of the class are such hard markers, you will do so much work just to get a bad work. bro showed up 10 mins late once and did not say nothing. Talks for most of the class. just dont take it w him
He is awesome, but the course is not an easy way to get a higher mark! Just choose this section without any doubts!
If you LOVE tesla and elon musk take this class! If you have any other interests in life and love happiness, your well being, and hope - DO NOT! This was the worst class I have ever taken in my university experience, possibly even my entire education career path. Please take 217 with anyone else! Susan Christie Bell is a saint in comparison!!!!!!!!
He writes fake reviews about himself in the 5 star rating, don't believe me? read some of them
lazy prof. writes his own reviews. doesn't actually teach, just assigns in-class speed work and sits in his chair and says "well guys i dont know what else to do" when you finish work early. your entire grade is based on how well you work with the group you're with. if you get a good group you'll be fine, but if not, drop the course. horrible TA's.
Trust me when I say it, he was the best prof I've had here in SFU, really wants you to succeed and gives amazing feedback The class is designed in a way that you have to learn the course concepts and use them in real life situations or do the implementations. It's all about how good you are with active learning. It's not him writing this lol.
Ilia really is a good prof, he is heavy on class activities but also provides valuable insights for your work. The key is to use the feedback and use it in your work. He's happy to answer all the questions, but it's not a regular class, it's heavily based on your actually learning rather than the tests, which is I suppose gonna help irl?!
Ilia talks a lot about random things during lectures. BUS 217W in itself is a very weird course; it doesn't really teach you anything. Most classes are spent listening to pointless current event lectures as the try-hard students yap with Ilia for 2 hours. Projects are timed/speed-based with TAs docking marks for every small error.
Take it with any other prof.
TAs are the idiots, he doesn't teach anything in the class. So awful, if you want get painful and failed for this course, just choose him!! AVOID!!!!!!!!
Super bad experience, always "in the news," and done nothing in the class. Do you think students could learn anything from these?? And for the TAs, we think you have to check any problems in your mindset. Do you think your grammar is really good, even better than English Prof? Wow, unbelievable! ARE YOU GUYS OK?
Does not care about the students, do not take it with this prof as his rating may say otherwise, the TA's mark really hard as well. He just talks about current events the whole time and does 15 mins of actual talking. Waste of time, writes his own reviews.
DO NOT TAKE IT WITH HIM PLZ
Ilya bro stop writing your on reviews and take the L
SUCH A bad prof!!! he doesn't care about his students and doesn't even go over the assignment throughly and just expects that you know it. THE TA's are horrible and mark very hard. don't expect a good grade in this class!
You don't learn anything in class and the TA's mark very hard. Ik ilia been writing some of his own reviews so keep that in mind when deciding - much better off taking it with some random other prof.
The criteria to follow for his assignments was always terrible, its practically just do what you think is right. This is what he calls critical thinking. The TA's were even worse than him. The grading is decided by how the prof and the TA's like you. Renan Paulino is as horrible as a TA can get, and Sikandra Ali is the same. Avoid TA's and Prof!!!
Just RUN!!! Leave this course for Luana/Matt!!!
DO NOT TAKE IT WITH HIM PLEASE! (Go to choose Luana/Stephen)
Ilia's class was overall good. The assignments were interesting as you got to apply the material to realistic examples to build your understanding. The coursework is graded hard, but it's consistent. The biggest downside is being stuck with a poor group, where the assignments are worth 50%. I think the group work should be worth less.
If you love Elon Musk, you will have lots to talk about with Ilia. Overall didn't feel like I learnt anything from the instructor, classes were an *open discussion* most of the time. (He loves to talk about himself) TAs are on another level, and grading is extremely tough and punitive, for even some things outside of your control : (
Never seen the instructor like this....how he's still qualified to work at SFU?
DO NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH!!!!!! Anto, Sylvia, (TAs), you guys should get fired!
RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN
Honestly, he was great. He wants you to give the taste of the real world and how BUS360 will be. All the people giving him a 1, look at their grades, putting all the blame on the TAs and the prof. I'd 100% take him again for BUS217w. He's quite knowledgeable and if you think he writes his own reviews, well all the best lol! Really get a grip guys
Oh wow, the one belowed. Do you believe that you are qualified to write in such a manner? Shame on you. I would like to ask you, everyone (~85%) is blaming and took the bad score; is that the students problems? The instructor should not reflect himself to let students know any other things. Haha, interesting...
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HIM!!!!!
This is the type of class you take for the credit and not because you plan to learn anything. You will not learn anything, honestly your grade is almost entirely reliant on how good the group members you are placed with are. The only time the prof talks is when he speaks about current news stories. If this class is not for credit don't take lol
Not recommended overall; avoid choosing another instructor for this course. Waste of money; pay more efforts and get such a low grade :(
Worst professor ever, do not take this class with him even by accident, he writes his own reviews. Hes the worst professor you could get at the Beedie school of business and puts shame on the great name of Simon Fraser University and the Beedie School of Business. The TA's are as worse as him do not know how to mark. Help kick Bykov out of SFU
Classes consist of spending the first half listening to him ramble about whats "in the news" and glaze elon musk, or assignments which rely on your group members that you are stuck with for the entire semester.Grades were inconsistent relative to other groups.Looking back on it I'm not sure I learned anything in this class besides to AVOID BYKOV
The workload in this class can be heavy, but the professor emphasizes understanding over memorization. Engage with the material, use Unstuckstudy for study prep, and you'll learn a lot. Attendance is a must, but the professor is helpful if you put in the effort.
Everyone complaining about Ilia doesn't understand not all classes are supposed to be a walk in the park. The grading is challenging, but it is possible to excel if you have high attention to detail and don't submit sloppy work. The grade in this class is a reflection of your work ethic.
Business news discussions are useful
The prof never actually talked about the course material in class or taught anything. He kept on talking about world news and asked us to discuss about it. He's not a tough prof tho. I went through the textbook for the exams and they weren't that difficult.
Lectures are useless, he spends all class rambling about trump and elon musk and his other right-wing views. Marking is difficult but depends on TA.
Terrible Prof all he talks about is how amazing Trump and Elon Musk are. Wouldn't be surprised if he wants Canada to be the 51'st state. Might be a russian spy.
He doesn't care or delve into the outlines for any assignments so you are unsure about what you need to even do to get a good grade. He spends a lot of time talking about random stuff that is unrelated to the course. There is a written exam that is graded pretty harshly to watch for as well.
I've had professors before who couldn't teach but even though they made my life hard I at least realized that they are a nice person. But what happens when you have someone that can't teach and is rude. You get Illia. What is funny is that he says that according to his personality test he is just naturally rude because thats common in russia.
Save urself the stress & take this class w/ a different prof. I don't think I've genuinely learned anything in this class…all we've talked about is “business news” (ramble abt Elon). The criteria for each assignment is very vague. The readings are meant for the assignments but they usually end up being useless or the prof doesn't even go over them.
Just trust me, dont take it with him. You will hate everyday you have class, his assignments don't consider that people have stuff to do the rest of the day and you have 4-5 hours after class to finish assignments. do not take him, L teacher.
Not sure how he got the job. Avoid him.
Writes his own reviews. Need I say more basically everything already said here is relatively true give or take.
Genuinely the worst professor I have ever had and probably will ever have. I don't think I have learned a single thing in this class since the entire lecture is just Ilia glazing Elon Musk and talking about "business news". He doesn't even go over assignment guidelines in class. Also, he writes his own reviews, so be aware.
Does not give clear instructions. Even the TA had no clue what Ilya wanted us to do and i haven't met one person who enjoyed his class or learned anything.
dropped out. Do not take with him.
this guy keeps on talking abt Elon Musk. Worst Prof ever took at Beedie, don't take him. I rather wait for a whole semester than taking him if no spots are available.
Very strict, do not recommend.
Ilia is a chill prof and he is very approachable. bus360 was so much easier than I expected. Lots of submissions, but it's manageable (217 and 303 were way worse). Try to find a good team, and you'll be fine. TA's expectations are high, so critical thinking and attention to detail are important. I would definitely take this class with Ilia again.
worst prof ever. The instructions were unclear, he didn't explain anything about the concepts, Even the TA is also confused Lectures were so stressful, unwelcoming vibes, nonmeaningful but had to attend and engage it for a group participation mark(your behaviour affectsthe team mark, so you have to attend technically)
Dude, Luis Goddyn looks like a saint compared to this dude. If u aint know Luis forgot to print the exams and only alloted 1 hour for finals neva forget. But seriously this dude gets his feelings easily hurt, his grading is arbirtray so forget about beating the curve. Literally a 1 or 2 percent means everything so make sure to participate.
This class is the definition of a GPA Killer. Avoid this dude seriously even it means taking it with someone else next semester I promise you its not worth the headache or effort. He also writes his own reviews and barely teaches always on his phone glazing musk and trump.
Beware prof writes his own reviews and similiar to what others have been saying Illia doesn't do a good job of briefing material and lectures are basically useless. Its only use is business news which is used for talking about how great elon musk and donald trump are. I thought I would be fine but I should have dropped out.
Look at this fake review "If you enjoy keeping up to date with economics or politics, this is the class for you. Professor Bykov allows an environment for open dialogue, which is complemented nicely by his knowledge on a vast array of topics. Despite the lower grade, this has been my favourite class (and professor) in university thus far"
to my fellow my students, please don't waste ur guys money on this prof. He is gotta be one of the worst Beedie prof. All he likes to talk about is Elon Musk and Donald Trump
definitely will drop your gpa. I would rather wait for a better prof next semester than taking him.
THE WORST PROF I COULD EVER TAKE. SHOULD HAVE DROPPED OUT WHEN I HAD THE CHANCE. DID NOT GIVE PROPER INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE ASSIGNMENTS, DROPPED MY GPA
guys please dont waste your money on this prof. All he did for the whole semester was talk about "Business News" and it was a complete waste of time. Only gives 5-6 hours for the assignments.
lol all these 5-star reviews are fake. I completely agree with others about his way of teaching.
Ilia really needs to change his course. The course will be a bit helpful for the future, but the professor makes it a horrible learning experience. Will not ever take him again, worst prof taken so far
This was a very annoying class in general. I did well on the individual assignments but my group dragged my mark through the mud. He never taught anything about writing in class and then expected us to do things like write 2 whole pages cited with 3 different sources in less than 50 mins. Also the TA docked points for things we were never taught.
Ended with 74% but got downward curved to a C because of the rank based system.
I was only lower than the average about 3%, but I got a D!!!! Guys, DO NOT TAKE 217 with him!
Only talk about Trum and Musk in the class, he never taught something really helpful to study!
Please drop his BUS217 right now, if you do not want waste of your money and lower your GPA
You really need to choose a better team if you want to get a good grade, he is the worst prof I have ever met at SFU Beedie
Hi guys, please choose other instructor instead of him in BUS217, I was so struggled in his course this term, I have no idea for his and TA's Rubric! RUN!
It was a big mistake I chose his course this term.......
As someone, who usually does decent with grades and courses this course is my only blemish. The grading is arbirtrary and he can gets his feels a bit if u pull up late hella times. The course itself is easy its just the curve and prof to worry about.
This class a Can scene
AVOID! Ilia doesn't teach much. He expects us to know exactly how to do the assignments, and therefore does not go over important details, spending most of class on "business news" and useless time-wasting activities. His TA, Anto, is no better. There was inadequate support for students' learning. He also writes his own reviews on here. Avoid him.
The whole semester has been a constant discussion of useless news, and my tuition has been wasted on his incessant blathering
I took his first class of the semester and it was always Musk and Trump, this is writing not a news sharing conference okay? Please have the dean's office look into this teacher's teaching credentials!
It's bad luck to meet a poor lecturer who doesn't have any knowledge of the subject
In the news, in the news, always in the news....
This professor doesn't know anything but journalism, and the most basic writing format is probably something he came up with himself via a simple google search...
I was really shocked to see so many people commenting on how bad this guy was and how bad I felt, even though it was only 1 credit P/F course
The worst instructor in Beedie by a LONG shot
The worst instructor in Beedie by a LONG shot!
I have ever seen such a bad instructor! Always to talk useless things (even not know how to do well in this course, read slides and in the news, in the news....
I don't know how he could still teach in the university, he should go to teach "Early Education"! Oh sorry I forgot, little kids don't like "In the News!"
Notoriously difficult class, somehow made worse by Ilia. The only content to learn is in the survival guide. Lectures are just discussions and opinions; I learned nothing. I had challenges with group members, Ilia did not help, and my grade suffered. Political discussions surrounding Biden, Trump, and Elon were part of every class. Terrible.
Bad, so bad, super bad, extremely bad, very bad!
Not sure if Ilia Bykov is a Russian spy or something. He spend 80% of his class time to discuss and praise Donald Trump, and show his political stance in his class. Not sure how could SFU tolerate him for this long. Disappointed about the school, and the course. Looking for transfer to other school in the following term.
The professor is biased toward Russian students and ignores complaints about group members who don't contribute. Avoid
The worst instructor I met ever, in the news, in the news, in the news, why don't you work in the Journalism? Here is the school ok?
I am coming here to study how to write professionally ok? spend my tuition fees to listen to your in the useless news?
Hey guys, just run! Do not choose his course pls!
I don't like to listen the news! Pls teach any useful like other writing course? You teach like this, how students can do well for BUS360?
Worst professor in Beedie, as if that award is easy to get. No actual teaching, just rambling about irrelevant topics. I cannot imagine how he got hired, he was never employed outside the walls of the uni before. Avoid at all costs
Anyone who are still choose his section! I just want to say "GOOD LUCK!" Wish you could pass by his hand, and enjoy the "USELESS IN THE NEWS"
The worst prof I have ever met so far
Terrible prof and terribly structured course. Grading rubrics were unclear, and feedback was not given on assignments, despite the last assignment supposedly being based on “improving” our work based on “feedback”.
Most useless course have ever taken, the prof is not good
Ilia is a very nice prof! His lectures can be quite dry, but they give you time to work on group projects or prepare for WDC assignments that are taken in tutorials. You have less than 50 mins to complete them, and the feedback given was not helpful. You can use chat in this course, but Ilia states that to get an A or B, you need to go beyond chat.
Absolutely amazing professor! The class was moderately difficult, but it rewards the time and effort you put in. Ilia's engaging and supportive teaching style makes the material clear and helps students succeed. Truly one of the best professors at SFU Beedie!
Do not take the class with him. Has a bunch of assignments that are like pop quizzes you get no context ahead of time and you go to tutorial and just start writing. The other sections of this class have an advantage because it's taught by another teacher. They get their assignment info a week ahead so they have time to prepare. Please beware!!
LOVED ilia for 217. took him in the summer, and he was amazing. There are a couple of group assignments, so be sure to pick a good group. Feedback and instructions weren't really clear on the WDC, but overall he's a really nice and understanding prof if you get to know him :)
He doesn't actually teach the material, and the class is extremely stressful. We were only given about 40 minutes to prepare presentations during class. He was unprofessional and biased toward Russian students, making the class environment very unpleasant.
Great class. I would take it again. He was amazing. He made the class a lot better than most professors. His WDC assignments are a really great exercise. Don't be shy to ask for help, as he gives very concise feedback.
He's a vibes professor if you want structure on assignment he's not the guy.
do not take this course with this proof, he has useless lectures, tutorials are all writing assignments and there is no time to prepare for them ahead of time. super hard marking.
his assignments are genuinely just a test on who can use AI better. didn't learn a thing. waste of money
Dedicated and enthusiastic, but unclear and inconsistent; slow feedback and slide-heavy lectures. More structure and hands-on work would make a big difference.
This professor is quite strict at marking despite his unclear rubrics in his classes. He makes you read the textbook and study at home (which is fine), however, he does not mention them on lectures at all and is completely useless because he doesn't assess your learning with quizzes. He TALKS ABOUT NEWS AND NEVER TEACHES HOW TO EVEN ANALYZE THEM
Had him for BUS 201, would not recommend. If any other prof available immediately take them over Ilia. 30% final exam on 15 chapters at the end of October. 15% from group paper with only 40 minutes to complete. Allowed to use AI for most things, but won't help you achieve a good grade.
He assigns at least 2 chapters to read every week. In lecture/ assignments, he will be discussing business cases with the concept in textbook that he doesn't teach and expect us to know. He let us use AI only because he gives very little time in class/ tut that no one can finish the assignment without the help of AI.
Very fun and inspiring course! Illia clearly explains how to prepare for assignments and offers great tips. The workload is average, and lectures deepen understanding of pre-readings. Assignments are graded fairly with helpful feedback. Overall, Illia's class was an amazing first university experience that fueled my passion for business.
Horrible teacher and a tough grader. Would highly recommend to avoid this teacher at all costs.
studying for the exam worth 30% of our grade rn and i actually might jump. he taught 0 material so you need to study entirely on your own. could take this whole class without him even existing since you do everything yourself and he makes his tas mark it all for him. run while you still can. i'm serious.
Knowledgeable prof but u self-teach urself, get ready to read 15 textbook chapters + know most of concepts. Split between individual assignments // group projects with exam worth 30%, choose a good group. Graded way too strictly (pissed me off more than calc I) get ready to receive 40-60s, but course is curved (70+ is A). good luck 08's not fun
Guys I love this guy so myuch oplease taje this course i beg of you please take it for your owb snaity
This is a self taught course. The lectures do not help whatsoever. If anyone is reading this, this course probably uses the textbook "Business Essentials Canadian Edition", Find the most up to date one and read it. Also, if you haven't used AI before, start practicing. The assignments gives you very little time. Try to get another prof. Good luck.
He is not clear with what he wants and your grade will reflect that. I asked him what format he prefers for an in-class group assaignment you have to do in 50 minutes and he said "its not what I prefer, its what the human brain prefers". All he talks about in lectures are things that wont even be applied later on in the course.
RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN.
run while u still can. doesn't teach at all. i don't understand why we have to learn business news in class????? all self taught. says he doesn't have enough time to cover content BUT HE LITERALLY WOULD IF HE JUST TAUGHT INSTEAD OF MAKING US DO STUPID 45 MIN PREP PRESENTATIONS AND SHARING NEWS.
bad prof. don't take. avoid avoid avoid. he should've stuck to photography.
He never teach you anything about the textbook but the test requires u to know everything from the text book. It's way too much for a first year uni student, also really hard time doing in class assignments, running out of time. Class average 50, TA mark really strict. Good luck with reading the whole textbook with 15 chapters, and presentations.
I have never thought the new freshman beedie course could be hard like this; this instructor is so bad and not even teaching anything, just caring about his useless news. 50% average could imagine what his class looks like. Avoid Avoid Avoid!
This class was a total nightmare
He's based. Honestly think the 1 star reviews are from really soft people lol
Lectures are useless cuz he just talks about business news or does in class assignments. A big portion of the class is group work with your tutorial group so find good people. TAs mark very differently so if you're unlucky and get a TA that marks super hard good luck. You have to read a textbook of 15 chapters but never goes over it in class.
Took 360 with him in the summer. Not sure why all the first years are complaining. Fifteen chapters is normal for a university course. The prof goes over the main ideas and you read the rest yourself, which is how university works. Class averages are low, but the curve will save you. If you go to him for feedback, he actually gives helpful advice.
does not lecture, you need to learn all content on your one, lack of empathy, he is not human
Worst prof in beedie so far. - All he does is talk about global news rather than teaching how to write better. - Unnecessary thinking fast presentations - Reviewed the group assignment with the TA, she said it was good and when she marks it, gives my team a bad mark - Never take it with him
Would never recommend this professor
I hope Ilia reads this and changes his "teaching", because for a business professor, what kind of value does he add to my educational experience? The exam is all self-taught and he doesn't have an accommodating personality as a first year lecturer.
He will pick on you until you're humiliated in front of the class. Your mark fully depends on your TA and how easy they are on you. take the class if you want to learn about news not Business. Didn't learn anything. Class average for all assignments was below 50% Tips for future students: do everything in your power to not take this prof
please dont teach again I cant with this guy
all I learned from him is about his own photography business that was most likely a Money laundering scheme
no empathy he will not help you made the team evaluation public so theres no conflict for him and everyone knows what we said about each other. such a stupid idea
not real made me hate school
Ilia's class is hard because the curve is very tight. The outline is a bit weird but you can see Ilia is a smart prof and is knowledgeable about the economy. He should teach economics, it would suit his character better. Goodluck on your second try. lmfao
take this class if you want a crash course in how to use AI for everything (as he recommends). he could honestly be sponsored by chat gpt for the amount of mentions. your grade honestly depends on your TA. everything i've learned is about his photography business, stock updates, and tea obsession. please avoid at all costs ! like seriously RUN
Expect 0 teaching but incredibly hard assignments, mandatory to use AI on everything (but still get a 50%), a final worth 40% that covers 13 chapters with 0% of it being taught, and finally, to learn more about business news than anything else. Please avoid this class, my grade in calculus is substantially higher than this class.
He is a good professor. His lectures and interesting and pretty relevent to the course. However, his assignments are quite difficult and are often on the stop and timed. He has clear expectations but they are very high.
tbh after all this time idk what he is teaching everything came out from his mouth was never useful, he js yaps about nonsense, bs class. TAs all hv diff grading standard so the average is flying everywhere, RUN GUYS EVEN MY GRANDMA CAN TEACH BETTER THAN HIM.
Insanely unhelpful, uses the textbooks as his way of teaching but takes up 2 hours of lectures to talk about his photography business and his love for Elon Musk. Instructions and grading unclear, his TAs are as useless as he is. He was my only option for the semester and I should've waited for the next. Good luck cuz you'll need it.
Take this course with any other prof. Super difficult assignment that he does not teach you how to do at ALL, this course forces you to learn everything you have to do outside the course, while he talks about his perspective on current events the whole time.
I don't think I learned anything in this class all semester. He's a very negative guy, also this whole course was just chatgpt.
Mostly taught how to put a prompt into chatgpt. Extremely strict with deadlines (a second late = 15% deduction). Talks about business news for most of class and will throw in business knowledge once every other lecture. Would not recommend, avoid this professor at all costs.
Ilia is not a 1 star prof (still bad). putting 1 star to balance out the bots. Only reason my grade is this bad is solely because of MIKE LI my favourite ta! He marks like the curve is the max he can give. Put so much effort and time into this class, far beyond calc & others which i am getting A- and A's in. MIKE LI is a name to remember for sure.
Did not learn anything in lectures, basically self study class. My TA (Mike) marked soooo hard compared to the other ones so all of our grades were always below the curve. When we tried to talk to Ilia about this he honestly did not care and told us to deal with it! Don't recommend him :)
he didn't teach anything in class, all he did was give us an exercise with no clear instructions and told us to complete in 20 minutes
You get to choose your own group during the first tutorial, so choose wisely. He also adjusts grades based on peer evaluations, so if someone doesn't pull their weight, he takes it seriously. He provides helpful, actionable feedback during office hours and genuinely supports students who put in the effort.
His expectations are high and he is indeed knowledgeable but the teaching quality was a mismatch. Course contains a 30% exam that was based on textbook content that he barely taught on. TAs grade extremely differently. Make sure you tackle any of the course content with hours of preparation ahead for a half-decent outcome. Avoid if possible.
I WANTED TO JUMP SO BADLY. I AM CONVINCED THAT HE IS THE REASON WHY MY FIRST SEM OF UNI SUCKED. HE HAS NO RULES, NO BOUNDARIES, HE ISN'T LOYAL TO A FLAG OR A COUNTRY. I STUDIED FOR 15HOURS, AND MY GRADE WASN'T WORTH. BRUH HE'S LECTURES ARE USELESS, I DIDN'T LEARN ANYTHING. I HAD TO LEARN EVERYTHING ON MY OWN. HES SUCH BAD MARKER. AVOID WITH UR LIFE
honestly, Ilia is a tough marker. The class content is over complicated and he didn't really prepare us well for the final exam. He's a genuine guy tho icl, he grew on me Nonetheless, your grade in this class will be determined on whether you have a good group or not. What makes a good group?: People that actually ask for feedback from the TA.
My kid attended his class and learned nothing other than to NOT think independently. Unless you are convinced that "business = use of ChatGPT", then this is not the course for you. I feel scammed for having to pay tuition for such a mandatory course that has no benefit.
No stranger, friend, or classmate could produce a single good review of this course. Ilia has caused 600 first years to hate business due to being unaccommodating of our knowledge as freshmen. I wasted hours, dollars, and tears on trying to outcompete the AI slop of others with my own AI slop. PLEASE AVOID
TO ALL FIRST YEARS: BUS201 grades are luck, not knowledge. He made AI usage and even plagiarism mandatory. My TA (Mike) graded ~10% lower than other TA's. Exam avg was an F. Trust me, he was a daily stressor for me. I almost considered switching majors. Just know this/consulting isn't all of business. Btw the good ratings are written by himself
Lectures were basically review of chapters. Final is based on application of textbook chapters and assignment were who can produce the best AI answer. Grading was tough at start but got slightly better. Exam average was so low, so stay above curve and you'll get a decent grade. Not the worst prof ever but wouldn't say he's good.
GRADING FELT LIKE ROLLING DICE IN THE DARK AND I LEFT EVERY CLASS AFRAID OF FAILING. MIKE LI THE TA SHOOK ME TO MY VERY CORE BY PRODUCING HEINOUS GRADES NO CURVE COULD SAVE. LECTURES FELT LIKE PUBLIC HUMILIATION BECAUSE WHY DID ILIA PICK ON US TO SPEAK BY THREATENING OUR GRADES. I HAVE THE FURY OF A THOUSAND SUNS FROM BUS201. WORST COURSE EVER.
This guy is one of the worst professors in SFU. His exam that is worth 30% is based on the text book that he did not teach in class. Every class he would only talk about politics. Everytime I got a graded assigment back, I wanted to jump.
I have never had a professor as terrible as Ilia. Every time I drive to school, I hope I crash just so I can not be in his class. His class makes me mald so hard. His criterias are impossible and encourage full use of AI in his assignments. It's basically a class of you competing with others on who can use AI the best.
COURSE SHOULD BE RENAMED TO CONSULTING WITH AI 201, EVERY ASSIGNMENT DOESN'T TEST YOU ON BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE BUT HOW GOOD U CAN USE CHATGPT TO MAKE REPORT IN SHORT TIMEFRAME. PICK GOOD GROUP WITH NO SLACKERS TO GET GOOD GRADES AND MAYBE PICK A RELIGION AND PRAY BEFORE EVERY WEEKLY LECTURE. GRADED HARSHLY AND YOU'LL PROBABLY GET AN AVG OF 40-60%. GL
Course is self study through a textbook, Ilia barley teaches. He just yaps a lot about previous business or the news which doesn't even relate to the assignments besides one. Entire time Ilia was insanely strict and harsh. I almost lost 15% on in-class assignment when trying to submit it 15 minutes early but couldn't because canvas kept crashing.
This guy did not teach a single thing and his assignments are literally "how well can you use chatgpt??" The average for the final test worth 30% of our grade was a 9/20. If you like gambling, this is the perfect class for you. What grade you get is decided by him rolling a dice.
He is a good professor, yes he has a different approach but it is enjoyable because its different. Tough grading but rewarding course in terms of knowledge. Do not procrastinate and show up to lectures and you should be fine.
Taking this course had me wishing that on the way to lecture the bus would roll back down the mountain. His lectures are useless & attendance is mandatory; your group will be cold called. Grading, Feedback, & Final are BEYOND UNCLEAR/USELESS. AI is used for everything. DO NOT RECOMMEND RUN! P.S. all the positive reviews about him are COMPLETE LIES!
You're expected to read an ENTIRE TEXTBOOK yourself, 600 pages for the FINAL, none of which is covered in class. Group work is worth 35% of your grade. His lectures are BEYOND USELESS! I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL! HE WILL SHOW YOU WHY SFU IS KNOWN AS A PRISON COMPLEX. BE PREPARED TO SERVE YOUR SENTENCE & BE MISERABLE WHILE DOING SO! BEGIN PRAYING!
He's the devil
Ilia was a good prof. I got Rosa as my TA and she was ok. I went to her office hours many times throughout the semester and she always answered my emails. I would like to thank her for saving my grade!
Get ready to hear about his photography business and Elon Musk for all his lectures.
good professor at sfu beedie
Pretty TA dependent for your grade and harsh with marking early on, but I found him to be a smart professor with interesting discussions that actually help with critical thinking. Definitely not easy but he's a insightful/sometimes funny professor. Lots of group work but you can choose your group. IF YOU DONT GET IN A GOOD GROUP YOU ARE COOKED!!!
idk what i hv learned in this course. everything in this course is basically pure luck. this makes me wanna crash myself when im driving on a highway.
RUN GUYS HIS CLASS ARE BS
Wow just wow, this guy is not it. Just dont take bus 201 with this guy
