She is sometimes weird.Doesn't like to be pointed out her mistakes..be careful..
doesn't like to be corrected, is mean
Easy labs, programming assignments, HARD TESTS!!!
Nice lady, very helpful when asking questions about labs, but not assignments.
Easy gives notes, easy labs, ok tests, cheat sheet allowed
Excellent teacher, and is always willing to help
Easy, gives great lecture notes, exams easy if you study your notes
gives good notes/labs..strong accent..overall good teacher
good teacher, tests hard, but assignments are easy
Horrible
to the point, doesn't waste time, does take attendance. 3 tests, 5 assign.(236)

A very good professor! She may look strict, but she teaches well!
Very good professor-happy to be in her section
Seems boring at times, but hey, this can be a boring subject. 2-3 exams. 4-5 assignments. She gives mock tests, and parallels her exams closely. Strong accent, straight and to the point. Maintains a detailed website with lecture notes.
She is a good teacher in all. She has a heavy acsent, but you get used to it. Test are ok. She will help you if you ask for it. Good Lecutres.

Great prof, useful website, very helpful

Great teacher, straight to the point. Is willing to help you if needed, and knows A LOT about material. Helpful website of notes and additional examples.
She is a really good teacher. Knows material and clearly explains it. Assignments and tests aren't too difficult. Learned alot in this class. Highly Recommend
She is a good teacher. She really prepares you for 237. Keep her lecture notes, they are money for 237!!!
Favorite college professor. Very good lectures and selection of lab problems. Take her class to get a good start in COSC.
Great teacher, might seem intimidating at first, but stick with her class. She is very nice and very knowledgible. oh and participate in class!!
She's a really good teacher. Her lectures are boring and she knows it but how exciting can programming be! I learned a lot from her and am taking her for 237. She has an accent but you get used to it. Do the assignments/labs and you'll do well.
She is a great prof. If you do the assignments and go to class, you will do well. Material is not that easy, but she teaches it very well and cares a lot about each students progress. Excellent prof for both 236 and 237!
She makes learning c++ fun and easy. There are no weekly homeworks but a few assignments, they are pretty easy. She teaches really well and is willing to help. Definitly reccomend taking her!!
Great teacher, explains things very well and makes sure everyone understands it. I never had a problem with her accent. Recommended.
Knida boring..Labs & lecture notes are helpful, but 4assignments are hard...Not an easy class. Just o.k.
she is a very good teacher and knows a lot about the material. Slight accent but very understandable. Few assignments and tests are easy if you come to class and pay attention. Definitely recommended to take her.
great teacher.. makes a not so interesting class interesting.. has a slight accent but you get used to it very easily. knows her stuff and wants you to do well! take her if you can.
Great teacher! She is willing to put in extra time and effort to help you. If you took her for 236 def. take her for 237. 4 or 5 programming assignments, 2 tests and the final. Has her own lecture notes on the web that are extremely helpful!
Extremely organized and knows her stuff inside and out. ALL lecture notes are on her website. Do her practice exams before tests. 3-4 programs and 3 exams. Overall a good teacher and a nice person
HARD HARD subject. Kind of makes you feel dumb at first when you ask the question. Pretty confusing lecturer. Eventually will help you, you better get it or cause the way she helps you, she'll make you feel dumb for not getting it.
She's a wonderful teacher and she really knows her stuff, but she's incredibly boring.
Organized, thorough, puts great stuff on website, but avoids people completely.Shes sarcastic, says stuff like "I don't need to answer questions, it's all online," plays favorites.Only interested in you if you learn material quickly.Awesome teacher if you don't need her guidance, otherwise take someone who enjoys students.
She's by far the best teacher I had at TU! I enjoyed her class because she made a difficult subject easy to understand. She knows her stuff, she helps her students and she's funny. Highly recommended.
Loved her class so much, I actually changed my major. Excellent prof.
Great teacher! Very organized and very helpful... Loved her website; her lecture notes and exercises are much better than the textbook.
Not a difficult class if you do the work. Very nice and very helpful teacher.
This was the easiest class I have ever taken. The assignments, tests, and quizzes were straightforward and were pretty easy. I highly recommend this class, Dr.Zimand is real nice, and did I mention her class was easy?
This class was killer easy. It was somewhat difficult to understand everything she said, but she was always there to help you understand.
Her class was very easy. All lecture notes are on the website, which helps, because she is not the easiest person to understand. Gives you the whole semester to turn in all labs - only cares that you turn in Programming assignments in on time.
had her for both she is awesome, come to class read the notes on line, the book sucks for both but she requires it sometimes she pulls assignments from it so u have to buy it. tests are straight from class notes and lectures, stick with it she is fair and if u try and take notes you will do well
Great teacher. 3-4 Assignments, a few pop quizzes and like 2-3 test. Labs are required but flexible, attendance count. Good teacher gives you lots of help.
Overall a challenging but very good professor, the 4-5 programming assignments are tough but if you put the time in you shouldnt have a problem. she also likes to give partial credit. 2 tests, 1 final, some quizzes (but they dont matter too much grading wise). she is very helpfull when I met with her and answered all my questions. I would recc.
very helpfull
She is such a great teacher, just show up to class, pay attention, reading book not necessary, although she recomends it. 2 tests (40%), 4 assignment(20%), easy labs(10%), and final (30%). Awesome teacher, def. take her.
Average teacher, thick accent and always says "yes" after every statement. Class should be good if you just do the work, wouldnt take her again.
Terrific teacher. Very conscientious, organized and willing to help students.
Extremely good teacher! C++ programming is so easy to understand because of Prof. Zimand. She is very thorough - her notes online are very good but her explanations in class help you to understand even better. Labs also help a lot in preparation for exams. Her mock exams give a good idea of what the real exams would be like.
My second time takin her, read lecture notes online and do all assignments, will help when it come to exams. Not the best teacher, but its programming, not a real easy sub. If you can take someone else take then
If you have no C++ experiance do not take this woman. I repeat do not.
hard....
Has an accent but teaches the material very clearly. She definately makes an effort to make sure that the students understand the material. Puts material into very lamen terms and has a very helpful website. Volunteer in class to get extra points.
If you are really into Computer Science then you can think of getting her class.. She is hard.. its only about surviving..
Aweful teacher, avoid her at all costs. She does not explain, gives pop quizes at 7:58 when the class is supposed to start at 8:00 in a cold morning. So if you get to class at 8:05, you can't take the quiz or even see it to study for the test. DO not take her.
I took her for COSC 236 as well. She teaches very clearly. She gives assignments that are not that hard to do. She'll provide help if you ask. She takes attendance and gives decent grades. I've never read the book or her lecture notes online and I get A's on her exams. 5 Assignments, three tests, a final and a few quizzes.Definitely take her if you
Prof. Zimand is very straight forward. Pretty much just pay attention in class and do the work. She's very helpful, and her class is hard at times. I can't say much, but generally speaking the class is easy. I sleep through most of her class and still do good. Just know what you're doing, don't miss any classes.
depend on your IQ, her class can be hard or easy for you. in order to get good grade, a lots of time for study and doing hw is needed! must study and do the work(a lots of works). she is a very good teacher i must say!
I'm a CS major a& CS is very easy for me. I was afraid to take Dr. Zimand because of what someone wrote. She NEVER locked us out at 8 am or after. She's very caring and always ready to help. She explains very clearly and makes it interesting. For majors, she takes you the next step when you've easily mastered what she taught in the basics. The best!
Worst Teacher!! Please, i repeat, Do not taker her if you want to keep your gpa high. I put so much effort into this class & still failed =[ VERY HARD TEST GRADER!
Although slightly condescending and her accent makes her a little hard to understand unless you're in the front of the room, she does actually laugh often. Attendance is mandatory, she expects some participation and grades a little hard, but she gives a lot of labs and assignments to allow you to improve your programming skills.
She is a bit of a hard grader. Attendance is mandatory. However she will make a better programmer out of you. She was also extremely nice and gave me a C in the course when I had a D since I passed the final. She will try and help you out if you show effort that you care.
Excellent teacher, very helpful. Learned a lot from her.
Learned a lot from her in 236, so 237 is hard but not too bad. Very good online lecture notes. Very helpful.
I had her for both 236 and 237 and I have to say she makes you a better programmer. Even though she grades a little hard on the assignments, that's what the Real world is all about. She prepares you for the REAL WORLD. Had a C+ in 236, A- in 237. Take this class!!!
If you understand the concepts of programming, you will be fine. Attendance is mandatory, especially because she gives pop quizzes. The quizzes aren't bad, just pay attention.
She has been a great instructor, she explains everything very clearly. Her class takes some dedication and actually doing all the labs and assignments yourself will help ALOT for preparing for her tests. Provides a mock test, grades fall heavily on test performance, tests are hand written, if you like programming and arent lazy, you'll do fine.
Excellent prof! Straight and to the point. Maintains a detailed website with lecture notes, labs, mocktests. Do the work and you will be fine
Pretty tough professor. I hate to reuse this phrase, but she really makes you into a better programmer. Tests were pretty difficult, assignments weren't too bad. If you're willing to put the work in, you'll get the good grade.
If you are not a COSC major, DON'T take her! She doesn't realize that not everybody wants to be a programmer. The work isn't impossible if you work hard. Very unprofessional, she will talk about you behind your back to other students. She doesn't want her students to succeed, and isn't compassionate at all. Hands down the WORST professor EVER
She's much more strict than my other programming teachers. If you definitely want a job as a programmer, this class will help. Assignments are the hardest part. Labs are barely graded and the exams are pretty easy and she allows a cheat sheet
Strict but only in a good way Stresses good format and style Pay attention in lectures, read book,do labs and you will succeed VERY VERY FAIR Prof
One of my favorites. Seems strict, but she just sets structure for students(Due-dates, deadlines, etc) Show her that you're trying & she'll help you too. Use resources she posts and office hours. Got an A in 236, but in 237 I had depression+medical issues, missed 3/4 classes. Let me do everything in final month and got full credit. Final grade: A.
Best comp sci teacher I have had at Towson so far. Gives you all the resources you need. It's your fault if your not doing well. Extremely clear and helpful. She seems strict but if you try and she see's it, she'll help you as much as possible. In 236/237 I almost always finished the labs in class. You get what you put into class.
Her accent makes her hard to understand, and the only time i've seen her smile is when she ridicules students for not having the correct answer. Honestly she's a great professor in the fact that she has extensive knowledge over her subject, but for the squeemish she will offend the hell out of you.
Good luck.
Zimand really is a nice person. But her class is stressful and hard. She really is good at getting you to understand the material. But just know what your signing up for. 4 Assignments, 3 test including final, quizzes and ungraded labs. Tests take up most of your grade. Very hard.
One of the best classes I ever had. I strongly recommend taking her for 236 and 237, if you are a computer science major. This is one of the most work intense classes I ever had. She will make you a better programmer. She is very clear what is expected in labs and assignments and they will prepare you for the tests.
Good luck. If you are not a COSC major, you will fail. She is very hard to understand, doesn't care at all whether you pass or fail, and doesn't explain concepts very well. DO NOT TAKE HER. Tests are nearly impossible to get a good grade on even with a cheat sheet. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS
Professor Zimand is great for students really wanting to program better. If you're not those majors, choose an easier professor. Three quarters of the way through the semester and I'm much better at programming. She is also upfront about whether she thinks you should be in the class, and whether you should be a cs major. Take her advice, she knows!
This lady knows her stuff. She's a great professor for students who know computer science, but if you're not experienced you shouldn't take her.
I'm getting on here for the sole purpose of leaving this review - Professor Zimand is the best teacher I've had at Towson. She is a tough grader but that isn't a problem because her lectures make the material easy to learn if you show up and pay attention. She is very organized and uses an online website for posting her notes. Highly recommend
Would not take again.
She is a good professor but she is not for everybody. If you're a computer Science major definitely take her for both COSC 236 and COSC 237. If you have 0 experience in programming don't take her, you are going to fail! If you didn't have her for COSC 236 and you got below a B+, you will have to work really hard to survive.
She is very blunt about whether you should be a comp sci major or not, and usually your grade will reflect that. Take her if you are a comp science major, she post all notes and programs online. Attendance is required though, and you can only miss 2 classes before it starts affecting your grade considerably.
No laptops in class for COSC majors. Harsh with attendance.
She is very good at lecturing the material. The only reason people failed was because they were on their phone the whole time or they skipped class. She is very picky about writing neat and efficient code, so she is good at filtering out the week ones. The course is tough in general. Don't take her unless you are a COSC major. Textbook not needed.
Without a doubt she is a tough professor. However she really does know her stuff. My main complaints are that she tends to make the class harder than it needs to be. She really wants it done HER way and the most efficient way. Also make sure your code is READABLE. Her lectures are mostly her just talking at you and its hard to pay attention.
COSC is a hard major in general but she is a great professor. I took 236 with another professor and during review of 237 I was learning new things! She's pretty detailed in her lectures. She's strict about your code looking clean but that's just typical. People complaining about her really shouldn't be in the major to begin with & I'm only a minor!
If you've done some programming before, you'll be okay. She's super difficult, but she knows what she's talking about. Don't skip class and pay attention to her lectures.
Take her for 237 if you actually care about learning the language and not just getting your credit. She is a very good teacher, teaches efficient coding practices. Pop quizes, but labs and quizes are only 10% combined, so they don't matter. Gives mock tests so you know whats on the real test. Put in decent effort and you do well and learn a lot
One of the best professors I've had, she knows the material and is an amazing lecturer. If you participate in class she will definitely take a liking to you and be willing to help you out. Definitely plan on taking her for 237.
Excellent teacher. Attendance is mandatory, and like many other COSC professors at TU laptops aren't allowed in lecture (for notes) and tests involve writing out code by hand. Group projects are graded critically, and you'll really regret leaving them until the last minute. I learned a lot and would recommend her to anyone who is serious about CS.
Knows what she is talking about, but goes about teaching the wrong way. Belittles and beats down her students. It's almost good that she is so intimidating so you are forced to do well. But as for actually enjoying the class, I would recommend another professor. Zimand can be a bit much.
One of the worst professors I had in life. She thinks there are only 3-4 students in the entire class who are experts and does not care about others. I taught myself every single thing. I got nightmares about this class every night. She just brags that she has been in this field since ages but can do nothing to teach us! AVOID HER !GOODLUCK
Anybody on here that is whining about her shouldn't be a computer science major. Hands down the best professor I have ever had. If you care about learning the material and want to be a better programmer take her. If you participate and are actually a good student she will like you. Can't recommend her enough.
The class entails of 4 assignments, 2 exam plus the final, labs that are graded on completion. There are pop quizzes that does not actually count toward the final grade. If you have no programming experience, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I was one of the lucky one to have actually pass the class with no formal programming experience. I recommend her!
On the very first day of class students are given an assessment for Cosc 236 in fall 2017 if students do not good at it meaning score below 4 out to 10 she recommend to drop the class and sign up for a preparatory course
I don't get why she gets such a bad rep. Professor Zimand has turned me into a better programmer and I could not have been more thankful for her to push me. If you work hard on the assignments and pay attention, you will get what you desire in that class. Definitely recommend her.
Zimand is an okay teacher, but goes about teaching the wrong way. She makes students feel stupid and is super intimidating. However, if you're a computer science major she'll push you, BUT if you're not (like i was) don't do it to yourself.
For this class you need to know your stuff. You do okay and the labs and assignments but can completely fail your exam. I wish she could've done more coding with us as a class, that may have helped for the exams.
One of the Hardest classes I've ever taken. If you want an A dont take this class. But this class really prepares you and makes you a better programmer. We were not allowed to use laptops. this kinda annoyed me because duh its a comp sci class. The tests combined are 60% of your grade and you are expected to hand write code. Be ready to be stressed
If you go to class, and take time to understand the concepts you will pass. If you are a computer science major you should take this professor, she not only pushes you to become a better programmer but does care that you pass her class.
Her course is very organized. Biggest tip I would say is to not fall behind and don't miss class either. She has some pop quizzes but if you're doing the readings you should be fine.
Imma keep it real with you chief, dont take this if youre in IT or dont care that much about programming because she is very nit picky on the assignments. With that being said, I really liked her as a professor. She lets you know exactly whats going to go on from day 1. Zimmand also just wants everyone to succeed, which is why she seems harsh.
She goes so far as to add up the minutes you are late to class until she can add them all up to count as a full absence. Your grade drops 10% for 3 absences, and 5% subsequently for each additional absence. She is extremely rude and condescending, but then wonders why no one speaks in her class. No laptops allowed. Harshest grader ever esp. exams.
This professor only reads off her notes which are disorganized and difficult to follow. She encourages participation but shuts you down immediately and degrades you as a student. She is very depleting of your confidence to the point you are afraid to ask a question. She is unwilling to help, doesn't look over your labs and leaves it to the TA.
Please do not take this instructor, for your own good. She knows how confused the majority of her students are and does not bother to stop and clarify the concepts because she has no patience for anyone who has a different learning style or aptitude for Computer Science. The work is extremely time consuming and nearly impossible to complete on time
If youre looking to find a professor for a computer science class. Do NOT take her, shes extremely rude and doesnt help you at all. She doesnt care if you learn and is extremely picky on what she wants. She gives out pop quizzes and doesnt give any time to finish and she will count you absent for every time youre late.
I took Zimand for 236 as well as 237. She is the best computer science teacher at Towson. She is strict and intimidating but is very funny and kind once you get to know her. She makes sure you know the material because it is one the most important classes for future COSC majors. About 4 assignments and 3 test(including final)
Do not take her!!!!!!! She can't teach and she constantly says "You don't know your 236 programming." She basically makes you feel like your a degenerate in her class and one of her exam questions is worth 45% of the whole exam. DO NOT TAKE HER!!! This is for your own good.
Do NOT take this professor. Just do NOT. I do not know who will be reading this but in college, you want professors who genuinely care about their students and their feelings, she is NOT the one. She is very rude and tells you to even switch majors. I made the mistake of not listening to those who told me not to take her, and I definitel regret it
As a honest review, I only advise people to take her class if you had her prerequisite course of COSC 236. Prepare yourself .Professor Zimand is a tough grader, favors those who took her COSC 236 course. She will not show you how to become a better programmer nor explain things to well. Had to withdraw and retake this course with another professor.
Very strict and on the surface doesn't seem sympathetic/caring. However, she's not as bad as everyone makes her out to be. She is just very specific about how she wants to run her class (stay seated, don't be late, no phones/computers out) and is a tough grader because she wants to make you a better coder. Don't take her if you just want an easy A.
Do not take this professor. Will verbally make you feel inadequate whenever answering questions in class incorrectly. Spends more time bragging about the amount of students that fail her class than actually trying to help students pass. The course is exponentially easier when taken with a different professor.
To do well in her class, read her lecture notes and do labs for practice. She is dedicated to her job as a professor, knows the material, values hard work, and expects you to work hard as a student. She knows about all the bad reviews of her, but believes it is more important to be strict and push students to learn more. No extra credit or curving.
Not sure how she is in a traditional classroom setting, but every single class so far this semester of Covid related classes has had at least 5 minutes of complaining every class. Absolutely miserable. If she hates online teaching this much, she should have just quit temporarily. If future semesters are online, avoid at all costs.
Really annoying professor if your not a computer science professor. Gives constant assignments graded for perfect accuracy and syntax even if programs run perfectly as intended. Requires attendance to every class and asks to watch you and turn your camera on for her online course. It's really annoying she really makes you work for everything
This instructor is one of the worst I have ever come across. Always picky & tough grading assignments code style. Has an attitude to students who struggle with Quizzes, etc. Poorly guides students on preparing for Tests & help with labs. Adds questions from labs that haven't been covered in the Midterm/1 Question 40% of grade. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Understanding & completing COSC-236 with this instructor is literally almost impossible. Honestly, some students with a high IQ will love her & those who are still learning their Major will suffer from this instructor. For the average student, I recommend you try avoiding this instructor & find someone who can be fair to students & provide help.
She doesn't teach well and has no sympathy if you don't understand anything, she teaches code without showing anything she just talks into the camera. Horrible teacher.
Professor Zimand is a solid choice. Yes, there are only a few things you are grades on (4 assignments group , midterm, final, quizzes, and labs). She really cares about you learning though and is tough on you so that you can be prepared. If you are motivated, you'll be fine. Respect her and she will respect you. Simple.
She gives 5 minutes for quizzes that take at least an hour. Stressful
She's not a good teacher in the online environment, lectures all not presented well. Quizzes really drop your grades. Lots of students withdrawed.
The instructor's teaching style is extremely difficult to follow & their quizzes feel like exams where they don't give students enough time to finish. She criticizes students for almost everything & is very picky with code submissions. They know about the ratings online about them, but they don't care about the withdrawal/prefer High IQ rates.
Worst professor ever. She wants the code her way, if not you'll get a bad grade. Doesn't matter if you got the correct answer. Hard grader, makes you feel subpar, recommends that you switch majors or drop out, and goes to fast. Good Luck passing the class if you don't know coding like the back of your hand. Take it with a different teacher. TRUSTME
This instructor doesn't care about what students think except believe that their teaching & coding is better. Loves to make quizzes feel like exams & adds future labs to midterm. Her GPA on another site shows she prefers high IQ A students while having high rate scores with F's & Withdrawals. DO NOT RECOMMEND! Terrible teacher including for online.
She makes everything 100 times harder than it needs to be. She doesn't help you with questions, but basically tells you to "think about it". If your program is anywhere even slightly similar to someone else's, she will literally give you a 0 and you'll have to be the next Mark Zuckerburg in order to pass her class. You want pain? Take her class.
I am just going to be blunt, this lady is mean. Just because some one knows that material does not make them fit to be a teacher. She has no compassion for students , halfway through the semester out of the 26 students taking the class only 10 were left after the withdraw period. She is a horrible teacher and her tests are very confusing. AVOID HER
She may appear to not care, but she truly does. If you ask questions she will always answer them. If you put in the time and effort it will pay off. But don't start caring last minute or it might be too late. If you do not have any previous knowledge, then this WILL be hard.
Highly recommend anyone who has transferred to Towson & decide to take CMSY-236 with this instructor please avoid them. If you have a high IQ level or taken her before then feel free to take her course. Be warned that quizzes & exams will be extremely hard with her & that her personality might suit well with some students.
She does not care about her students except for few smart ones. She basically asks weird questions every 5 min which only 2 or 3 people can actually answer in the class. Why did I pick this prof? There was no other option. Why her class is the only one left for you to pick? Because she is the LAST pick to have for your cs237. Trust me dodge her.
Difficult to learn in this class, lectures are basically her talking through code. She doesnt allow laptops during lecture. Pop quizzes, midterm, and the final are very challenging and graded tough. Labs and coding assignments are very easy and graded easier.
She's awful man just trust me. Considering the amount of effort me and my partners put in to her class only to still be on track for failure showed me how unreasonable she was. I dropped the class after midterms and about 1/3 of the class was still in there when I left. She also has the least engaging lectures I have ever experienced.
About 3/4 of the class withdrew. Attendance is mandatory and if you miss too many days you fail. She forces you to write proper code and if youre not ready to try your absolute best and do your own research then you will struggle. However the quizzes and tests are all handwritten including writing Java code. You better learn how to write FAST.
I love her shes the best, if you have the opportunity to take her definitely do!!
this class was so bad. she does a class report where everyone can see each others grades and we were literally all failing. half the class dropped out after midterms.
She understands the content well, but clearly doesn't understand the fundamentals of teaching. Her lectures are awful, replaced one of the exams with pop quizzes, and assigns harsh labs and assignments. She told several students to drop the class, with 1/3 of the class dropping by midterms. 9 of 24 students passed the class. Do not take this class.
She looks like she doesn't care but she does. But the problem is for the first half of the semester she sat down and read off of her lecture notes the entire lecture. And the labs we had to do were very difficult, so much so that we had to use the internet to complete most of them. In the first half, everyone also did badly on the quizzes.
Ngl the comments on here had me super scared, but Professor Zimand is not bad at all. She is actually a very reasonable prof and is pretty nice from my experience. The course itself is difficult, but if you go to every class (and pay attention), genuinely put in the work outside of class, and keep up with the material, you should be fine.
I tried really hard on all my work and studied for hours. However, I failed the midterm and almost all quizzes. She says that "curving grades promotes bad behavior." Overall, as a person, I think she is nice and reasonably understanding. However, I think she needs to ease up on her teaching/ grading style.
She can be a little uptight about things (no computers in a CS class) but she's a very good teacher, and she'll grow on you through the semester. Lots of group projects that can be challenging but reinforce the material. She has a great dry sense of humor that's quite endearing. Absurdly difficult midterm though; a lot of hand-writing of java code.
This instructor has mixed reviews between both 236 & 237. She does better for 237 but has a bad reputation for 236 due to how students interact with her the first time. She might be friendly outside of the lecture, but her teaching & grading style provide limited options for doing well in either section. 90% of students withdraw after the midterm.
If you are new to coding, do yourself a favor and do not take her class. She only cares about her few "knowledgeable" students and has little to no hope for the rest. The majority of the class withdrawals after midterms. If you miss more than 4 days, you automatically fail. No computers during the lecture. Good luck.
She is a fair and honest professor, does not sugarcoat the material- it's difficult, but if you put in the work on your own time, you will be fine. Pop quizzes every two weeks or so, but they are easy if you read the material she has planned out. Many dropped out after midterms but she became a bit more lenient with the remaining class.
I will only say that 236 Students will hate this instructor & 237 students will likely love them. She knows that some elements of people know her record, yet TU would instead push students to attend her classes because they know that many avoid them. There are 2 or 3 more instructors that are better. More patient, more willing, and able to tolerate
You would think after years of low pass rates and high withdrawal numbers, she would work to be a better professor but nope. I am so mad I got stuck with her because she really ruined my chances of continuing in my major. I dont understand professors that go out of there way to make it harder for students to succeed. She is awful, avoid her.
Seconding what the person below me said, definitely avoid this professor if you want any hope of passing this class and continuing your major. Just take Dierbach, he apparently teaches very well and the class is easy under him, according to what peers have said about him this semester. Almost nobody had time to finish this midterm, 75m not enough.
Professor Zimand can be tough, but if you put in the work, you'll do well. Using unstuck AI alongside the course materials can really help with study prep. The class is challenging, but manageable if you stay engaged.
Professor Zimand has strict but clear rules in her class. Some seem actually unfair and detrimental to students who have difficulties outside of school, for example not being able making up pop quizzes for any reason. Her lectures are great and you will learn the material if you are able to follow her guidelines for the class. Tough midterm.
I wanted to let you all know before you ruin your lives with this professor; respectfully do not take this class. If not one of the worst professors of all time, she's definitely one of the worst at Towson. Very meticulous with her grading style, started off class by telling us how a lot of people will fail her class, she missed 1st week of school
There's a word limit, so I'm back to add more. Don't let any of the past ratings fool you, this is a course you should tread with caution. Literally more than half of the class withdrew by the midterm, leaving just a few students left. There's group assignments, so be prepared for that. Also, she told us to copy the notes from lecture AFTER class?
She is tough but very smart, do not miss more than one class or your grade will be gone. Her quizzes and assignments are hard but you have 2 weeks to figure out each assignment. Pick a good group and don't be scared off by her cold personality. Overall she made me work hard and I learned a lot while not killing my grade.
Before anyone decides to give this instructor a positive review I suggest they gauge the ratings already given between 236 to 237. Many of the pros come from students in 237 and are unfamiliar with her, having not taken her in 236. In that section, she harshly criticizes students because she thinks they know 237. She is a horrible teacher.
She is very harsh and a tough grader. However, she is very knowledgeable. Her lectures are very good. She is not the most understanding professor when it comes to missing class or assignments. DO NOT USE AI she will catch you immediately. Come to class and be engaged and you will do fine. If you struggled in 236 stay away. Overall she is ok
Many people who rate her low are most likely not fit for CS anyway. The content is simple. Nearly everything from the midterm onwards is content that was already taught in 236, just expanded on, concept-wise. Fairly easy class, had to put in the work when exams came around, but that's typical. I guess if you know your stuff, take her.
