stupid, makes the course material seem more difficult than it really is
No Comments
Do not use the book. Take notes from his lectures and study them to the dot! If you do this, along with completing his study guides, you will be able to get a solid B or above.
foreign and doesn't use book. Reel foreign.
Unclear. Makes concepts hard to understand. Take notes on everything, even the non-economics examples. He expects EVERYTHING he says during lectures to appear on tests or he takes points off.
1 word: LOSER i hate this teacher never take him ever
i have never had a teacher as confusing as this guy. I never have any idea what topic he is on and what ever he is talking about makes no sense.
Nice man, but made things way too complicated. Hard to understand. I went to tutoring to pass this course and even they didn't understand him!

This guy is so confusing. Nothing he says connects to the next topic and nothing comes out of the book so dont bother reading it. He doesnt go out of his way to help you to make it better.
Sooo difficult to understand- can't follow his lectures. just go to review sessions and find out the EXACT answers to his review sheets- it's the only way you'll pass
The class is pretty easy...The key to success in this class is to skip lectures, read the book day before the review, go to review and answer all questions on review sheet, and you get guranteed A or A- on the test, cake.
Oh Ilter...ditto to what people said about going to class, taking notes, cramming before tests just to know review Qs (review sessions help) kind of boring, but not terrible, kind of feel bad for him
Dr. Bakkal is the man. He is perfectly clear, no suprises on the tests. If you don't understand him, get out of economics, you suck.
I went to every class, wrote down everything he said and didn't get what the hell he was talking about...I'm an A/B student and ended up with a C and had to spend time in the Economics lab...find another professor
just a bad teacher
He is not a bad teacher! Boring, yes, but Ilter is the cutest--he tells you exactly what you need to know on the test, making them very easy to do well on. Always offers to help. A++
VERY Easy class if you just go to every class and take all the notes he writes on the board and do the study guides. Tests are exactly what he talks about in class.
I am a senior now, and I really believe that he is the worst professor at Northeastern. There is no way to know how to study. He contradicts himself in his lectures. The only way to get a good grade is go to the study sessions.
I've only had this guy for a couple of weeks but I already dread going to class every day. Dry as sand, confusing as hell, and he mumbles on top of it all. I haven't learned a thing in 8 lectures. But I don't dislike him as a person-seems pretty decent
VERY UNCLEAR TEACHER. POOR EXAMPLES. SOMETIMES HARD TO UNDERSTAND ACCENT. EXPECTATIONS ARE SOMETIEMS VAGUE
Ok, so the class is really boring, but you learn SO much in it. If you go to class, get the notes, and do the review sheet you know exactly what is going to be on the test. Explains everything, and is happy to help if you don't understand. Nice guy. If you can stay awake, I recommend this class.
Great teacher.. one of the best...
He is the worst economics teacher ever! I am an economics major and after his class I took Macro theory and my professor told me everything I learned was useless and wrong! What a waste of my time!
horrible, unclear, tests are not like the study sheet or what he goes over in class...and im an A student in every other class this semester except his
As everyone has said, his review sheets don't go over what's on the test, very hard to study for and very unclear what exactly will be on the test. Even going to class and going to class and taking notes doesn't help either. Confusing lessons and not clear at all. Terrible teacher.
Good MACRO professor. The way to do very well is to show up to all the classes (he will pass around an attendance sheet some days when attendance is low) and to study and MEMORIZE the study sheets he gives you to work on your own for the tests. One of the better macro teachers.
bakkal is a great professor. hes engaging and really cares about both the subject and the student. why do other students rate him poorly? sure, his tests require alot of thought. he wont accept multiple choice because macro isnt that kind of subject. he wants you to know the material, and you will.
hes a good teacher and good man
tests are so easy!!! he goes over everything pretty well, doesnt take attendance, gives extra credit, nice guy

He's very helpful and fair. In order to do well, you need to show up take notes, know the study questions and thats it. If you do that, you can get an A. You can even get by w/o reading the book since all the info you need to know is on the study sheet. It can be a little boring and repetitive at times, but it helps you learn the info.
not bad. go to class. do the study guides. and you'll do fine. class is pretty dull, but not terribly difficult.
if u want a class where you dont have to show up take this..it's not that he is cool so you don't have to show up..it's that it wont help you on the tests because he sucks at teaching..so just take the class and read the book thoroughly and you should do ok on the tests
Got an A, tests were pretty straightforward with never any surprises, always willing to explain until you understand it, Good teacher overall
Macro class - nice guy, presents 100% of the material upfront in class. If you get the answer wrong on a test it's because you didn't pay attention or critically think about what he was teaching. Those who complained probably have never evr had a HARD cours. He was nice and not too dull despite his slightly goofy Turkish accent. Ex "Sply and dmnd".
Ilter is great. Presents boring material well and gives applicable examples. Polite, respectful and all-around a professional teacher.
I <3 Bakkal! He is so good! His tests are hard but as long as you write a lot in response to the question and really work out and know the problem you're good (BS IT!) He has helpful reviews and his review sheets aren't the test but they help make sure you studied the stuff... use them AFTER you look over your notes.
He sucks at teaching, and he is such a hard grader on exams, and I put a lot of time into studying for the exams. He wasn't helpful at all during office hours, and was actually kind of a jerk. I'm probably going to get a D in the class, and I have a 3.2 GPA, along with making Dean's list, so avoid his class if you know what's good for you.
study his notes
a good guy. his classes are interesting, hes funny, and the tests arent that hard. as long as you pay attention in class and take some notes you'll be fine. He has review sessions before every test (but i never went to one). he sometimes goes off on tangents in class, but are usually interesting, but sometimes brings politics into the class. :(
I have had Ilter for 2 courses, and in both he has not done a very good job of explaining the material. The book is much more reliable. He often confuses himself and draws incrrect graphs. Also he does not answer questions very well. His grading is a bit too hard and he does not change grades when the answer has many options- he only looks for one
I tried BSing the answers on the first test and it didn't work. I started giving long, detailed responses and got a 100 on every test. He's very smart and knows what he's talking about. He takes attendance only every few classes. His review sheets are very helpful and similar to the tests. Come to class having read the chapter!
Ok professor. Study the study sheets he gives out before each exam. Make sure you know every word and an exact definition. He wants an exact response, anything close he won't give credit for. You can read the book and do well, compare his notes to the study guide
Take notes and write down everything he says. Tests are short but difficult. Make sure you explain yourself entirely. and hes right, you have to study at least a week prior to the test. Hard/weird grader. Say exactly what he wants or you'll getpoints off. Pretty okay teacher.
The tests are based on about 15% of the study sheet that he gives you, and he expects that you know much more than just a definition of the given terms. There are four tests and each one is made up of about eight questions, each of which either having to do with graphing or intuitively explaining something. Hardest class I've taken thus far at NEU.
Pretty good prof. I've always been horrible at economics and only took this class to fulfill a major requirement but I found him to be really helpful and easy to understand. He goes over the same things repeatedly which really helps to drive home what he's trying to teach. Seems to genuinely want his students to understand everything and succeed.
SOOOOOOOOOO BAD!!! Switch out now, total ****, bizarre grader, only 4 tests. get out now!
He is nice, but the exam is really hard and weast time.
Helps you if you need it. Sometimes doesn't understand your question right away but so what, he will answer your question til youre satisfied. Interesting lectures too. Recommended.
Good teacher, you do need to put the work outside of class. Study hard before tests and you will get good grades. First exam is hardest but use study questions and you will know whats on the exam.
Very Reasonable
Quirky guy, I enjoyed his class. He really knows his stuff and is passionate about economics. The lectures can be a little overwhelming but if you take good notes and review them, like he suggests you really start to understand the material. The reading does help, but you can get by without it. Definitely study before tests, and do the study sheet!
Really nice guy and very helpful too. Class lectures can be boring, but he always lets you out like an hour early. His tests are in 4 chapter increments with no cumulative final or midterm. Tests are easy if you do the study sheet he gives you and go to the review session he holds. Really wants his students to do well, i highly recommend him
Micro theory. 4 exams - 25% each. He grades hard and you have to know the exact definition, all questions are short answer. Good professor, takes attendance for extra credit and expects you to participate. USE THE STUDY GUIDE! Some of the questions from the guide will be in the exam! free points for that! you can get an easy A for this course.
His lectures can be difficult to understand, but he gives ample time for questions. Covers a lot of material, but you can be successful in this class if you study.
Sort of entertaining to watch teach. He has an interesting sense of humor. Expects you to read the chapter before class, but it doesn't really matter because he teaches everything you need to know in lecture. 4 exams 20% each and 20% for participation (attendance, questions, etc). Forget your notes and study the study guide he gives out!!!!
Good teacher. Very clear when he talks. Make sure you go to class and read the book and you will do fine in the class
Class was okay at first, but this guy was not helpful at all, he basically failed our whole class and half the class dropped it. The tests were hard, even though I studied and my notes were thorough and informative. His lectures were helpful...he doesn't believe in extra credit, he thinks extra credit is for slackers.
Professor is a harsh grader and was not helpful during office hours. Attended class, participated, read the chapters before class, took thorough notes, but still was not able to get a good grade. I would not recommend this class.
Not a good teacher. Expect to teach yourself as you'll have a hard time paying attention in class. He has a very low inaudible voice and slurs his speech which makes it even more difficult to understand him. Will include material on the test he did not teach. Attendance is mandatory. Overall avoid unless you plan to teach yourself.
he's the best professor i've had since i study here. he explain everything very well. really concern about the level of understanding in the material and eager to help us to be more understand. 4 exams, 20% each. study from his study guide. REALLY HELPFUL! if you master the study guide, guaranteed 90+ grades because the questions are 90% the same.
Great Professor. Love the way he teaches. Very clear in his explanations and is always there to help. This was by far the best class and professor I have had so far. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING MACRO WITH HIM!!
Nice guy, but being an econ major, he's one of the worst professors I've had. He does NOT enjoy his job in my opinion. He's not at all helpful OR willing to help if you don't understand something which makes you question why he's even bothering to be a professor. Not helpful in the least, not clear in his objectives either. Frustrating to have.
Definitely one of those classes that reading/taking notes from the text is incredibly helpful. He often lets you out of class early, but tends to take attendance. The tests equire lots of studying and intuitive grasps on the concepts and their applications, but I found him to be an overall good, knowledgable guy and enjoyed him as a professor.
This professor was not very helpful. I didn't prefer his attitude, and his teaching methods were not helpful. Difficult to understand, and clearly played favorites. Didn't make a difficult/boring subject engaging or interested. Notes are intricate, but tests are not on what is written in the notes. Study guide helps some, but he is a tough grader.
Overall, he was okay. Not one of the best but certainly not one of the worst. Honestly, if you actually read the chapters before class (which he tells you to do), then you'll understand the topics much more easily. I also had him for Managerial Econ and overall was satisfied. If you're engaging he has a lot more respect for you. Overall nice guy.
Kind profesor.but VERY HARD EXAM! 188/200 total points you can get an A.almost impossible, cuz he has 4 exams, no HW, so only -3 per exam you can get A.
Professor Bakkal is by far the best economic's professor I've had at Northeastern. His lectures are extremely clear and he is very helpful both during class time and office hours. Tests are very similar to his study guides. Take his classes if you actually want to develop as a economist!
Definitely the worst professor I have had at Northeastern. He does not explain concepts clearly or in any way that actively engages the student, does not explain assignments clearly, and is overall not helpful at all. I would not suggest one of his classes to any student, and I haven't even received any grades yet.
Great guy. I'm an Econ major and I've had much worse. He's not super helpful if you go to him for help. People who say he's the worst clearly didn't try...if you go to class, take good notes and listen then you'll do fine. Especially because he essentially just wants to see that you paid attention when he was talking in class.
ASSIGNMENTS ARE NOT ALWAYS CLEAR. TEACHING NOT CLEAR. HIS CLASS IS VERY EASY TO FAIL. AND ALSO EASY TO PASS IF YOU ALWAYS PAY ATTENTION TO DETAIL
its been two months and he still hasn't graded my paper
Tests are mostly based on what was taught in the class. Thus, it's highly recommended that one goes to the lectures.
Probably one of the best profs I had here so far. If you take notes in class and listen to what he says, you will be able to get a good grade. This obviously implies going to the lectures. The book isn't necessary in his theory classes but could help.
Great professor. Hard to follow at times. He gets a bad rap. He's absolutely brilliant. If you take notes, go to class and do the reading you'll get an A. if you skip class, don't read, avoid studying, you'll definitely fail. Easy to pass and easy to fail as well.
He is a terrible teacher, although the subject matter was really interesting to me. He is very unhelpful even when you go to his office hours and ask him directly for clarification. I would recommend taking this course with someone else.
Hard grader, not clear in class, do not recommend
Vague lectures, but goes beyond the book, leaving you to wonder what to study.
I think he gets a bad rap. Can be hard to follow in lectures but he really knows his stuff. Read the book. Pretty good about answering questions via email or after class, and pretty much tells you exactly the answer he'd be looking for on a test. Speaking of the tests, they're all short answer but they're very similar to the study guides he gives.
Not to sound extreme, but one of the worst professors I've had. If you enjoyed Environment & Society with professor Daniel Faber, stay clear of this course and professor if you value your time. He's not very knowledgable, talks slow, stutters, rambles, and he easily gets confused by both his own thoughts and questions in class. Very disappointed.
one of the easiest topic I've ever encountered but still couldn't get the As. He is clearly not very knowledgeable in the field and makes up for this by being extremely tough grader. Had to write two 2500 words papers, too much for a course that has 3 exams. I put down 15 hours work into papers, all I got back from him was one sentence feedback!
Brilliant guy, incoherent lectures.
Avoid him, bad attitude, comfusing, hard system to get good grade in the class
His lectures are confusing. His tests are all short answer, which sounds great in theory but the questions are very vague which makes it extremely difficult to understand what answer he is looking for. You can go into tests completely prepared and come out with an 80% unsure of what you did wrong. His grade scale is unfair 92% is min for A-
The worst professor in the Economics department in Northeastern. He is bad at teaching and monotone. His exam are hard and he is a unfair grader. Even if you do well in all your exams, like I did. He will end up giving you a bad grade for participation like 4/10 which will bring you done two grades. I ended up getting a B+.
Professor Bakkal is a good professor. He knows the material and is able to get it across. If you come to the class, take notes and are present in mind you should be able to pass with a strong grade. Tests are short answer, he wants to see if you can solve a problem and explain the reason behind reactions.
Professor Bakkal is great. He gives clear lectures, answers question willingly and his exams are similar to his study guides. Most exams have extra credit questions at the end, making it fairly easy to get a good grade. You don't really need to read, as long as you show up for classes and listen. There is no participation grade.
For Macrotheory he was a good professor, this is my second class I've had with him. If you pay attention, come to class and read the textbook you have nothing to worry about. He does not try to trick students or embarrass anyone.
He was awesome. Very clear in his lectures. Good exam review sheets. If you go to class and listen, you will get a good grade.
There were a lot of environmental majors in the room and they had beef with his teaching but he is a good professor. His bread and butter is economics but he has a great interested in environmental studies. If you pay attention and try to learn the material you will get a high grade. His teaching method is relaxed and won't call on someone randomly
He's a great professor. I have taken multiple classes with him now. Most of them were a great experience however don't take econometrics with him. Any other class is easy to do well in.
Horrible professor, is very unwelcoming to questions. Extremely tough grader, and takes weeks to grade exams. Will offer very little support for you outside of class, so get ready to take this course in your own hands if you want to do well.
Very difficult to understand, loses his train of thought very quickly, and doesnt prepare you well for the 5 question exams. Dont expect to get an A in participation either
Had heard less that good things about Bakkal, but he is actually a super nice guy, gives good lectures, and provides great review material for the test. No bs assignments or papers. He's a bit tough on grading, but once you figure out how to answer you're golden. I actually looked forward to class, can't recommend enough.
Results on first test pretty much dictate grade in overall class. The book is critical because his explanations are usually not clear.
Confused about how he teaches at Northeastern. By far the worst professor. Lectures are boring and he will stand in the middle of class and talk for an hour without a presentation. Refuses to use technology, and complains about how bad it is. Study guides are very similar to tests but if you don't say the exact phrases he's looking for, good luck.
You have to depend on the textbook because his lectures are hard to follow. He writes everything on the blackboard and refuses to use presentations. The exam reviews are really the only helpful thing. You have to write exactly what he wants on the exams if you don't want points taken off. He is sweet guy but just downright confusing as a professor.
The worst professor I ever met at Northeastern. Avoid his course if you still care your GPA!!!!! He does not even know what he wants. "i'm expecting you figure out what you want." He is also a extremely tough grader.
This professor says one thing in class and expects another answer on his exams, that's gaslighting. In an email, he states that he's had students study hard, revises their strategies, and still fail. How can any professor say that and not think there's something wrong with their way of teaching? This class is a joke and the professor is delusional.
He does not explain topics very clearly and he is not good at answering questions. This wasn't the worst thing though as the textbook can teach you everything. However what caused me to drop is that the first test had MC questions with the "correct" choice being nonsensical. Economics tests should be straightforward, not ambiguous.
Ilter Bakkal gets a bad reputation from people because he is a bit difficult to understand. He really knows what he is talking about and I learned a lot in his class. There is no homework other than reading the textbook but he will cover everything you need to know in lecture. Just copy what he writes on the board, take notes, you'll be fine.
Nice guy, but tells you the concepts rather than teaches them. Tests were confusing and made no sense, regardless of how much I read the textbook or studied the review sheets. There is no homework, so it is hard to understand the concepts in the context of a question. Very difficult to pass let alone get an A, best to avoid.
Has not adjusted well to the online learning environment. Halfway through the semester we still had to remind him to zoom into the board and record class. His sole teaching material is jotting concepts on the board and he spends the entire class rambling on about irrelevant topics. He is not receptive to students' needs and does not listen well.
Out of touch and difficult to understand. Jots down concepts on the board and there are no practice questions for us to make sure we understand them. Review sheets are very broad and oftentimes hardly related to the actual exam questions. Lectures were fast and disorganized and it was overall just very hard to learn and be successful in his class.
Professor Bakkal is amazing, I can't stress this enough he made a topic I hated Macroeconomics to a topic I loved, he is really caring for his students and very nice with everyone, its truly shown that he wants his students to learn although its a hard class he will make you love it.
I think prof Bakkal gets a super bad rep but if you are used to a more European teaching style, you'll enjoy his lectures. He does not prepare his slides beforehand and sometimes just closes his eyes and goes for it but he is very knowledgeable on Microeconomics, and you can tell he likes the material. Don't take if you don't like multiple choice.
Do not take Professor Bakkal. He is very difficult to communicate with and makes office hours almost impossible to get to. He does not care about individual students. Took him in History of econ. thought and micro theory.
Professor Bakkal is not lenient at all. He doesn't give extra credit and he's a harsh grader. On top of that, his lectures are very boring and he's it's kind of difficult to grasp concepts withy him. Avoid taking him if you can.
He's really hard to understand and inaccessible. Very unorganized so it is hard to know what's going on. Relied on textbook for the semester.
Confusing lecture plans. Over complicates subjects and makes it really difficult to follow throughout the course.
talks the entire time with no powerpoint or notes. gives incredibly tough exams and is very rude when students ask questions in class.
I do not recommend Bakkal as a professor. There is no lesson plan, no structure, just a free fall through macro (not based). The only resource he gives is a textbook. His teaching style is just him just talking at his students about anything macro-related for the entire time and misinterpreting 4 out of every 5 questions asked. quizlet>bakkal
Professor Bakkal's lectures are as boring as they come. His tests are very hard and he is an unusually tough grader. I would never take his class again. Best to avoid him as your professor.
Professor Bakkal has by far been the worst professor I have ever had at Northeastern. Tests are worth 88% of your grade and you have biweekly discussion posts worth 12% of your grade. He only grades the discussions at the end of the semester so you have no idea what your grade actually is. He is incredibly mean and will not help you succeed. SKIP!!
If you are looking for a Macro class, do NOT take this professor. He is weird and does not make any sense when speaking. He also has the most difficult exams where the average grade was a 15%.
The professor is very difficult and the grades are only based on exams and discussions. The exams have extremely difficult questions and do not make sense. Please do not take him if you want a good grade!!!
he is the worst prof I've ever taken in my ENTIRE life. non of the questions on the tests were related to his practice tests. his slides has 0 information, 5 slides maximum usually. AVOID HIM AT ALL COST IF YOU COULD.
he is the WORST
best teacher ez a
Lecture heavy, boring. That said, the tests are online and multiple choice. Do with that what you will. He's a nice guy just a little spacey and tests can be difficult/questions open to interpretation. If you're scared of math, don't worry, there is little to no math for this its mostly conceptual.
Pretty standard professor for environmental economics. Clearly cares about the material, and is a solid lecturer who really knows his stuff. He has a sort of old fashioned style of lectures just using the chalkboard with no slides for online review, so attendance is very important for being prepared for tests. Easy enough grader though.
I enojy his classes. teaches well
Amazing. U will learn so much. But u need to put a decent amount of work. Nothing extraordinary. Amazing lectures. U cannot miss class cause u will fall behind
Great professor. Takes attendance but I loved going to class because he obviously knows what he is talking about and makes it interesting. Only downside is that the tests cover a lot of material and make up a large part of your grade but as long as you have been reading the textbook, going to class etc. you will be fine.
I loved his teaching in class. You will learn so much. If u actually want to learn, take him
No slide, No Textbook, Only note in class, the note is a lot in each course. If you don't write note, you will be terrible, so don't take his class. The grading system of him is different from other. 200 total,4 exam: 35each, discussion: 20,attendance:10, paper: 30.A plus is over 190. if you got 30(it is not bad, over Mean) in each exam, you will..
If youre looking to take Principles of Macroeconomics, take another professor. His lectures are ok, but he doesnt write anything down, and tests are mostly based on the textbook. He is also super nitpicky with his grading on exams and is very bad with technology. Stay away from him if you can
Good professor who gets a bad wrap because he makes you learn. His course was very lecture-based. You could read along in the textbook (and he recommends it) but in my opinion that's not necessary. Go to class, take notes, ask questions, and study for exams and you'll do great. His exam grading is odd sometimes, as is he, but overall a good course.
Very interesting and knowledgeable about the history of economics. He's excellent at helping you understand concepts in layman's terms.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. No textbook, no slides, boring dry lectures, harsh grader. The only way to study was to note down and memorize everything he writes on the board, or you will fail tests. Tests are all short answer questions, which just requires you to memorize everything.
Professor Bakkal was one of the best professors I've had during my time at NEU. His grading is clear and straightforward. He cares about you learning rather than memorizing. 10/10 funny man.
Professor is hit or miss - lectures can be dry, but tests are manageable with the textbook. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep. Overall, a decent class if you put in the work.
Professor Bakkal gives great lectures and it's clear he really cares about students memorizing and understanding the material. He's a super fair professor. Attendance is part of the grade but all of the lectures are recorded on zoom.
He used the time very will, teaching us a lot
Bakkal gets a bad wrap with reviews. He is an intelligent and funny man that will clearly communicate topics in a non-math way and will provide help if you ask for it. In order to get a good grade, you must attend every lecture. The reviews he gives before is significantly helpful for the tests, and opportunities for extra credit exist on tests.
Honestly don't understand the bad reviews– Bakkal is an amazing professor who gives you all the tools you need to do well in his class. You need to attend and pay attention in each class to understand the concepts, but he makes an effort to consistently review topics. Follow along in the textbook and do all his review questions, you will get an A.
Try and take another professor, this class is just not worth it.
Good lord. Where do I begin? I hate this man. He explains things like he doesn't want you to understand them. If you pay attention in class, it is futile. All your attention should be paid to the textbook out of class. He is extremely boring, and by far the worst teacher I have ever met. Be prepared to see points taken off for no reason. Curse you.
THIS GUY SUCKS. If you can take someone else, do it. Discussion posts are SUPER unclear and not clearly marked when due. FURTHER, the graphs he draws up in class are NOWHERE to be seen in the textbook. Please save the GPA.
Had Bakkal for a Critique of Capitalism class, and most of my concerns came from the way he organized the class.Towards the end of the sem lectures became way more disorganized. Still, he was clear about what terms /questions would be on tests, and as long as you actually listen in lectures and do all readings you will be fine.
Very old fashioned - uses chalkboard to teach. He clearly cared deeply about environmental economics, so he always had a lot to say. Not a lot of hw assignments, and he's an easy enough grader. Can be hard to follow at times bc of his lecture-heavy style, but if you pay attention you will do just fine. Does often give vague instructions on purpose
