Professor is very knowledgeable in the topics he teaches. Lectures are a little bit dry and packed with information, but I learnt a lot from the class. Definitely would take him again. Homeworks and projects are not too challenging, but they do take some time (as expected from a data science course). Overall, I recommend taking him!
I don't think Ilyas wants to be teaching time series at DePaul. The author of this course was passionate and knowledgeable, but Ilyas apathetically read from slides. The M.S. Data Science program was built by an exceptional team of educators, so it is sad for me to witness a gem program pawned off one course at a time. I can no longer recommend it.
The professor was clearly unprepared to teach the course and his lectures were extremely dry and extremely slow. The class was almost all lecture as there wasn't any homework until the second half of the class and still there were only two real assignments besides the final project. Would not recommend unless you want an easy A.
Good professor overall. You can tell he cares about the students. We were assigned a classroom with desks that made it hard to use a laptop; he talked to the school and was able to get the room changed for us. Class was about 50/50 theory vs. R coding. Group project, assignments, and quizzes. No final. Plenty of extra credit opportunities.
> Well organized material > Gives bonus assignments > Class is comibination of R work and theory > Lectures and material posted online was helpful.
He's a nice guy and willing to try his best to do better. Given he is new to teaching stuff, his performance is understandable. Try to prepare for leaning a little bit outside the class since it may not hard or clear in the class. But still, take advantages of communicating with him. Ask questions, give feedbacks to make yourself learn from it.
Great professor. Easy to follow along in class and prepares you well for the homework so they're not too hard.
The lectures were straight to the point. There were syntax code, for R, that is shown later in the class that would have been useful to learn early in the class.
Good class, good Professor!
Quizzes and Assignments are made quite easily and are discussed in the next classes. Participation is surveys gives few extra credit.
Great professor that really knowns his material. He uses R within this class so be ready to do a lot of coding. There is a group project in this class with a ton of homework. This class is not for people who don't want to put in effort and work for their grade. I learned a lot in this class!
I liked him. He was also very responsive, which means a lot for online learners. The only downside is he changed a lot on the fly, but I heard it was his first quarter here so maybe he was getting used to things here.
Good teacher. Lectures are kind of dry, but that's about it.
Professor Ustun has a reserved personality but really cares about his students. He always tries to help if you ask questions and presents material in a straight forward manner. Tons of opportunities for credit, if you put in effort his classes are quite fun.
Overall you get what you put in. With a little application, you will get the A. What you learn is really up to you.
He obviously knows his stuff, but his lectures weren't the most exciting thing. It isn't really fair to judge him on this though due to the fact that his lectures had to be switched to online due to the pandemic.
do the work, show your effort
Professor Ustun would have probably been really fun in person, but this online class was rough. Still, you have to give him credit since things randomly got pushed online last second. It's obvious he knows his stuff, and is actually pretty good at explaining WHY you use certain bits of code syntax (which I feel is rare in DS).
Just follow his instructions on what he expected you to do in those projects and assignment.
This is a fun class that you will be able to put together a project and be able to learn from each other.
Good guy! responds to his emails and wants you to succeed
This class was a nice chance to develop a personal project if you find the right group
He creates a respectful environment. Good professor who cares about your success. He is very responsive to emails and gives very helpful feedback.
Great teacher
Very Good
Useful 2 take notes PRO/CON: +Provides EC +Understanding/helpful ask questions, he'll b able 2 help +HW Straightforward +Class chill, no stress -Lectures r hard 2 follow (scatterbrained) -Quizzes test if u can recreate his solution (no problem-solving) - A bit emotionless but caring -/+ Project could decide ur fate w/ how competent your members are
Had him for a capstone class, lots of check-ins and milestones but overall it kept people on track for a class that could have gone poorly if people waited until the last minute.
I enjoyed this class. He wants to help his students and really does care. He does all he can and the rest is on you to use the resources to get a good grade. If you do the work and pay attention, it's a very easy class.
The course work was well organized, and detailed. The professor took the time to answer questions, and was always responsive. There was never a time in the course where I felt that I could not keep up. Hope that this review helps.
I have taken two classes with this Professor, he is super understanding, really flexible and knowledgeable as well. I will definitely recommend this class to everyone, we learned not only from him but from other students as well. He keeps the class engaged and awake (which is hard to do onilne).
This is a very good class, I enjoyed this class and I also learned a lot from the professor and other students. I definitely recommend this class.
He is generous in grading. He respects your ideas and hard work. Be prepared to answer when you do presentations ( easy questions though).
Look, the topic is gonna be dry for some people. He does want you to be engaged though or at least that's the impression I got. He was very responsive for me during the time I took his course. Idk if he can maintain that responsiveness, but I thought the desire to be accessible was there.
I enjoy this class. this is a good chance to apply your knowledge into practice. it's pretty useful.
Great professor. Very quick to answer questions and guides you through homework.
good instructor, more practice opportunities
reply to email very fast
Dr. Ustun is very caring and wants his students to succeed! His materials are very organized and so is his teaching style (even though I did not originally think so in the first couple of weeks)! He also offers extra credit for feedback, which shows he is always looking to improve.
Good professor
Breaks down material well.
In a class with an online async option he assigned a big group project.
Good guy. He isnt one of those strict profs that dont accept hw past a minute late. Hes understanding but also cares that you learn and understand. He offers bonus points and the quizzes are up to 2 attempts and not that hard if u attend class. Final is a group project which he makes u start early so its a breeze wen it comes to final time.
incredible prof and a great course with reasonable work.
Good professor. Thank you,.
Enjoyed the course
My least favorite instructor in the MS DS program. Zoon lessons are very hard to get through and extremely dry. This is essentially another iteration of intro to DS. Very, very easy and almost nothing new from previous courses. Ilyas has non-professional responses and an extremely difficult D2L page to navigate. Save your time and money and avoid!
If you're looking for an easy A, take his course. If you're actually looking to advance your knowledge of data science - take another instructor. Gives no feedback on assignments and essentially writes the code for you. You will spend your time looking at power points with too many words on them, and that's about it.
Honestly an easy A but if you want to learn more about DS, this probably isn't the professor for you. A lot of self teaching as well. Maybe it's because he's new to the program and there's still some kinks to work out but I'd choose a different professor for 540 if given chance. Nice guy though.
Easy class but you dont learn a lot from his class. His course seems to be organized at first, then things skewed up. No feedbacks on homework. Confusing instructions for paper review and project. He kept changing the due date of quizzes and assignments. The zoom section is boring and not useful. This is one of the useless classe Ive ever taken.
Course was as expected. Capstone project with instructor oversight. We would just give weekly updates on how well our project is going and he would give feedback. He's very helpful and knowledgeable. This is a great option to finish your graduate program.
The professor is easy going. Everyone has to do their part. This is class is based on what you put in yourself. He provides direction what we can do or enhance things. Didn't seem harder than any other class taken. Expectations are clear.
He is very accomodating. This class is about what you know so you really shouldn't be learning anything new. He helps give you direction on your project and ideas when you're stuck. Overall it was a great closing class before earning my MS Degree.
Course workload was appropriate and instructor was available and helpful
Nice professor, give deep explanation on theory, assignments are fairly easy. I would consider his class is theory dominated.
He's a fun lecturer
Sometimes hard to listen to because lack of projected passion and monotone, but it's not too bad.
He is awesome and cool
He is a great professor.
The class is really fun. As a capstone class, you get to pick a group and work on a project together. You would have two updates where you make a presentation of what were the updates you and the group did to the project and present it. There was a software presentation which was pretty easy, 2 paper updates and 1 code review update.
I learned a lot. It was good material by good professor.
Very nice teacher with helpful powerpoints and appreciated doing lots of examples in Jupyter notebooks.
He was a great professor. Gives you time between assignments so you don't have to turn something in every week. I enjoyed that because it gives you time to be able to understand the material if you did not understand it the first time.
Assignments were interspersed so you could plan if one week was going to be really tough, usually had a couple weeks between assignments. Quizzes were good tests of knowledge but not trying to trick you in any way. A solid class.
Some of the theory in the lectures was a little hard to follow, however, the assignments were all coding based (with examples provided) and very straightforward, and the quizzes were more on the application of what we learned and not on theory. The workload was good - enough to learn/test myself but not so much as to be overwhelming.
Some overlap with other classes that seem like a review, but introduces new concepts in the second half of the quarter. Overall, I enjoyed the class and learned new concepts.
Everything is good with Professor
Homeworks were very straight forward and the professor could be easily reached by email. Lectures were a bit long but it was clear the professor was passionate and knowledgeable about the material. Examples shown in class really helped with homework as well.
Great Learning style with practical examples and code walk through
Bright teacher, good at coding, very flexible. The classes need to be a little bit more interesting!
Posses a solid technical acumen
One of the amazing professors I studied with. He certainly understands the student's problem and going with the flow. His works are very inspirational.
The assignments require a lot of models and they are a great opportunity to advance your own code and dive deeper into hyper tuning. parameters. While they are comprehensive they are not too difficult. He adds new info and the course continues to evolve with technology. I would try some of his other courses.
Very good preofessor
DSC 672 is the Capstone course for the Data Science master's program. The format of the course was to find a group, pick a dataset, and do a research project. There were weekly updates on our project progress. We also had to present two literature (research paper) reviews, and create one software tutorial on something not taught in a class.
Replies to emails promptly. Long lectures.
Great Professor!
Thank you Professor!!
Group Project is pretty interesting and fun. No exams. Quizzes that are easy if you go over lectures. Plenty of easy extra credit points.
The interactive lectures with student participation over a topic with zoom breakout rooms helped in learning the course content in the next level.
Professor is very good as he is very helpful and understanding. He is open to all types of projects and encourages us to pick topic according to our choice. Definitely take this course if you want to enhance your practical knowledge.
Course pretty easy and repeats some material from prior required degree courses.
Professor knowledge towards the Machine Learning and data science domain helped me to complete the project and to excel myself
His class is organized, not too hard.
Online quizes are single shot. Multi-part q's are graded fairly (proportional to correct response vs. one part wrong all wrong) You will be coding and some assignments are open ended enough that they can take some time if you elect to do some experimentation. You will get what you put in out of it.
The homework contains duplicated items.
Professor has provided enough time and support to complete the project
All project work, with a couple other smaller items to pad the grade. Not an easy course, but if you pay attention to lectures and practice the R-code all the projects are reasonable.
Prof provides a lot of extra credit, so you shouldn't do bad in the class. The homework was straightforward and easy sometimes, as long as you know what your doing. If you pay attention during class, you'll get an A.
Professor Ustun cares about his students and helps when you ask him. He is clear in his lecturing and the in-class coding examples are easy to follow along, and he will answer any questions you have along the way. Overall, should not be a difficult class if you do what is expected of you. Homework is straightforward.
Great Professor.
The best professor who know how to make coding interesting for the students.
This professor is mediocre at best. Going to lectures mostly involve him reading from slides that are taken from course textbooks. Not sure if he doesn't care to actually care to be there or has simply been rehashing the same materials from previous semesters for years.
Can't recommend this professor. He has an apathetic, fake-nice reproach when it comes to in-class interaction but when communicating via email or even grading, he could truly care less. Unfortunately, he's the only option for the capstone course so you'll have to bear.
Meh. The class was okay, I suppose. Just seemed like too much busy work at times with late grading.
Ustun means well, he's just not that enthused to be teaching the course. Many of the assigned tasks just feel like busy work. The good news is that it's an easy A if you're willing to trudge through the tsunami of work. He generally doesn't meticulously grade it. Just checks to make sure that it's complete with some effort.
Course seems okay. May take for credit next quarter.
I really enjoyed Professor Ustun. I thought he was very specific about what he expected from you. The class projects were well defined, and unlike other coding classes, he guided you through the code and gave you hints within the projects. I did not feel lost as I typically do when doing Code assignments.
Lectures are good. Clear explanations and a lot of examples. One downside, did not grade the projects till almost the end of the quarter. No feedback on assigned projects.
He is a professional.
Professor is very supportive of innovative ideas, and expects students to give 100% to whatever they work on. The guidelines throughout the course are well structured and systematic. As student one gets an idea of how real time projects are built and what are the do's and don't one must keep in mind. Helpful and worth taking class.
Great professor that taught data science in an understandable way. I enjoyed going to his lectures because he would let us test out our understanding of r by giving us problem sheets. Giving us time in class to work on these let us get better while still being able to ask questions.
I had a great time in this class! I liked how the lecturer covered a lot of the r-programming in class. His lessons were also quite informative and straightforward to me. Class consists of projects which require sufficient knowledge of lectures-otherwise great professor!
You can tell Professor Ustun really enjoys teaching this curriculum. He's very nice, respectful, and gives good lectures mixed with powerpoints, live coding examples, and paper discussions. He'll take the time to explain something if one doesn't understand it.
I learned a lot.
Avoid this professor! He is a complete snooze and takes forever to respond to emails regarding assignments. If you can, avoid.
Is it an easy A, sure. This comes at the expense of taking a filler course that doesn't add novel value in the way that prior classes did. Much of the class is unstructured, so there is free rein to navigate the direction you choose (for projects, milestones, etc). Regardless, much of the course him simply going through the motions.
PROS: Everything is clearly laid out, micro extra credit opportunities; CONS: passive aggressive professor, slow email replies, monotonous course progression, poor didactics
Waits until the very last minute to submit grades for assignments. Boring lecture format and unenthused demeanor.
Class was okay I suppose. I really didn't feel like the professor was a necessary component to my success in the course. Future variants of this course should perhaps be fully automated.
Completed a time series course with professor Ustun. He doesn't seem to ever have any passion for the subject matter. Would much rather take this course with another professor given the choice.
Easy A for sure. Biggest complaint: course materials aren't graded until the final week that grades are due, so it's nearly impossible to gauge how you're doing throughout the course. Other than that, the professor was just going through the motions to cover course subjects.
Don't take this professor. He doesn't grade assignments and project materials until a couple days before grades are due. Avoid.
Slow to reply to emails, even slower grading assignments. It was not a pleasant experience having this instructor.
Dr. Ilyas was my advisor/professor for my capstone project during my time at DePaul. (Data Science Graduate).Dr. Ilyas helped me throughout the class whenever I needed guidance, was accessible during office hours and agreed to meet even during out of office hours. He not only pushed me every time to improve my project, but provided valuable insight
Really good prof honestly. He gives a lot of easy extra credit chances and the homework isn't that difficult. Honestly, if you pay attention to the lectures you should get an easy A. The examples in class give you the answers to the homework with a lot of changes.
Professor does a great job of conveying the information of the course in an organized manner. Advanced machine learning is a tough course but the lectures help since the theory behind the algorithms used is explained in detail, and the assigned work is all coding which is great because the practice really solidified what was learned during lecture.
1.Provided learning the connections between the learning outcomes, assessments and lecture presentations. 2.Provided good practical strategies . 3.Provided useful assignments because they were practical and are useful when applying for jobs. 4.Good integration of both theory and practical aspects in this course
Professor is very good at providing the knowledge and feedback about subject matter.
He is good and supportive throughout the course!
I thought the instructor did a good job of presenting the material for the course. What I'd like to see is more application and less theory. While I understand that we should know what happens and why, sometimes it can be a bit confusing.
The lectures are heavily focused on the theory aspect of the ML algorithms used in the course, while the assignments are more focused on applying them. We were given lots of time to complete each assignment.
His lecture was really helpful. It was well organized. Unlike the other class in DePaul, his class shows the way how to complete works.
Professor was very friendly and material was very organized. Every concept was taught in class and disccused in detail how to approach the problem and it helped me to get good grade. On the whole it's nice to take this course and it was very useful.
Great professor and he is very organized and his materials are too.
Prof. Ustun knows his subject very well and always give great ideas and solution to any problem.
Overall a good class. I thought he provided a TON of supplemental material which was helpful for the homework. Good balance of theory and practice through project based homeworks. Class was pretty easy overall compared to some other ones at DePaul
Professor always recommends nice idea and support you to solve a problem in a project.
As always, what you put into a class dictates what you get out of a class. But in my opinion Professor Ustun is solid. He gives great feedback and provides the right direction needed to understand the material.
Professor was very helpful and learned a lot.
Professor was very helpful and I learned a lot.
The professor was accomadating and listens well to his students.
Ustun was great. He cares a lot about you understanding the concept. He'll make himself available to you even if it's offline to answer those "stupid questions" i had. He's very empathetic and encourages working together. Overall he's easy going. i'd prob take him again.
I felt this professor demonstrated care toward providing high-quality instruction and providing homework where the instructions were easy to follow. He does a good job of providing simplified examples that help students understand the more important concepts of the course. I would recommend for other students.
Has an open mind. Encourages creativity. Allows students to challenge themselves. Provides well managed goals, tasks & time management so that student(s) are not overwhelmed trying to crunch projects by the final due date(s).Gives great feedback on milestones. A positive, you can do attitude, which is priceless. A Professor's Professor Standard.
Very good professor, smart and caring. I got a few very inspirational advises from him.
Awesome instructor. I really enjoyed the paper presentations and software presentations.
He has clear due dates and expectations for assignments. The amount of work required for the capstone project was reasonable and not too difficult to achieve if you complete the milestones/updates throughout the course. He was also flexible, understanding, and receptive to emails.
Professor was very helpful when it came to giving advice on different techniques and strategies.
He's great and awesome and very knowledge of the course contents. He works very hard to engage students by adding the class zoom links for online students, so they can participate and be part of the class. The homework structure is the best among all my DSC classes, and student can follow the direction and have a sense of accomplishment with HW.
Prof.Ustan teaches in a simple and understandable way. He conveys the material clearly
Professor was generally very easy. The homeworks were too simple as they could pretty much be done by copying and pasting the lecture. He knew the material well but it didn't feel that he was confident presenting it in front of an audience but was able to answer all questions thrown his way.
Solid professor. Lectures are not too terrible, and he posts slides online. Assignments are not particularly difficult, but they can be a bit time consuming. Quizzes are not particularly difficult either and offer partial credit. Only took off one point for lack of organization, which was not unbearable, but annoying at times.
Awesome teacher! Explains the theory behind data science very well and coding lectures are super applicable and easy to follow. He is patient and will help you immediately if asked. 6 homework assignments, no final or midterm. Take this class if you want a good foundation in R and regression!
His classes was organized well and the amount of assignments throughout the term was doable. If you attended/watched the lectures and use the resources provided you will do well.
Great teacher. Runs the class in a way that takes a lot of dependency away from coding with quizzes. 4 assignments based on examples from class. 1 project with pretty open guidelines. Quizzes every week or so..
Easy class though assignments will be tough if you do not pay attention during class. Learned interesting topics as well.
Really nice professor and gives more than generous amount of extension time for homework/projects. Lectures were loaded with material though so drink plenty of caffeine and be ready to take lots of notes. Quizzes were only one attempt, but you get a lot of time to complete them, so take your time and have notes handy.
Very good professor with lots of knowledge related to the concepts taught in the class.
Requirements for the course are straight forward from day one. Make sure you attend/watch lecture in order to fully grasp the homeworks and quizzes. Professor is often times difficult to get a hold of if you do not attend in person.
Gives great examples to help you understand the concepts and coding.
Great Professor who clearly thinks from the student perspective when structuring course. I wish we would have skipped reviewing content that is covered in prerequisite classes and spent more time on advanced topics such as Apache Spark, Bayesian Networks, and Neural Networks.
Great Professor with well designed course.
Amazing professor, Will Build your coding skills during the course. Will help you understand the concepts easily with a practical approach!
Code examples can help you improve your coding skills. The instructor is very nice!
The level of teaching was good and if there was any doubts it was cleared in a moment.
The course was very well organized and the professor did an excellent job explaining key concepts.
Great Professor, tries to balance theory and coding. Very fair, recommend him for anyone interested in learning Machine Learning.
I had already taken a course earlier under him and found extremely useful as he doesnt jump into the course directly rather gives us overview basis and does a smooth take off. This course was also helpful as constantly gave inputs on each week's update. Prof is awesome in terms his communication, knowledge and friendliness
Had him for capstone - good and easy class!
Dear Dr. Professor Ilyas Ustun, I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for your exceptional guidance and support throughout the course. I extend my heartfelt appreciation for your outstanding teaching and guidance. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to learn from you. With sincere gratitude, Keerthi Mirajkar
Prof was great!!. Exercises every week not graded just for practice and ample amount of time was given to work on the assignments. Grading was clear enough but used to take alot of time to grade the assignments. If you wanna learn and implement what you learned right away then this would be a great course by Prof. Ustun.
Dr. Ustun was a great professor and was able to explain new things about topics I thought I knew everything about coming into the class. Highly recommend taking him!
Professor Ustun was knowledgable in machine learning. He gave students clear expectations and a good amount of work. Students are able to get an A if you do the work.
Read all lectures and follow his intructions
excellent
Great prof. who genuinely cares. He offers a lot of additional reading and has coding guides to ensure students aren't troubled by coding if they're still learning. So, you can genuinely spend your time learning about the theoretics of machine learning while increasing your coding skills without feeling stressed out.
Great professors, but assignments can be difficult and time-consuming. Start early and keep up with the material. The class moves fast.
Satisfied
Professor has good grasp of his knowledge and what he teaches. The assignments are pretty doable and is always fun to play around with your code!
Would much rather take this course with another professor given the choice.
He's smart/nice guy and the class is impossible to fail. However, his ability to teach material leaves much to be desired. He moves quickly throughout examples while figuring out solutions by talking to himself, almost forgetting that he's teaching a class. He's also very quiet when going over examples.
He has clear documents and requirements for the group project. He's great.
Prof. Ustun is a really nice teacher, and his assignments are very open-ended. This course overall has been a great opportunity to dig deeper into different/more advanced concepts in data science and expand outside what is typically offered in data science courses in a low-stress environment.
The best professor
Awesome professor! Perfect pace, workload and structure. No midterm, 4 homework projects, 6 quizzes, one paper presentation and one final group project (plus a few graded surveys throughout the class) Extra credit opportunity on the final project. Grading was very quick. I really loved this class and this professor - he is brilliant and laid back
All Good
Very personable and knowledgeable professor. The flexibility on the project was greatly appreciated compared being forced to work in groups like other classes.
He teaches with great interest and support students gain extra credit
Incredibly interesting class that covers so many interesting topics. Dr.Ustun is was a great guide through the difficult course!
One of the best at DePaul University.
I wanted to express my gratitude for the advanced machine learning class. Clear explanations and practical examples made complex concepts more accessible. The engaging discussions and challenging assignments enhanced my understanding. Thank you for creating a supportive learning environment.
He is good professor, he teaches what is required for the course very well.
Professor has good grasp on fundamentals as well as advanced techniques and the course material is well organized.
he's very cool
GOOD AMOUNT OF ALGORITHMS COVERED IN CLASS.
The professor makes learning Advanced Machine Learning fun with clear explanations and interactive sessions, while regular feedback ensures we're on the right track.
He's really good. Super chill prof and is super understanding. I would take him again in a heartbeat if I could.
Ilyas is great! He gives fun, engaging lectures and it was very easy to do assignments for his Foundations of Data Science class. Also, he's such a generous grader! One of the best at DePaul.
Great professor and allows you to bring in your own concepts to explore further. Superb level of knowledge in all things data science. I've had to pleasure to take several of his courses and would so again if this wasn't my last one. Highly recommended.
Really good professor. The feedback is excellent and always helpful.
I enjoyed the class overall.
Interactive Classes
Must taken class
EXPERIENCED PROFESSOR.
I would recommend him to all the students there ,he is just great.
Professor Ilyas Ustun is the best professor at DePaul. His lectures are interesting, and the work load is manageable. Overall, great class and great professor.
He is a knowledgeable professor who provides valuable feedback. I would gladly take another course with him.
The lecturer would adjust the content and difficulty based on everyone's feedback, which is awesome!
the professor have thaught the lectures very well
Good class with very fair courseload and grading. Instructor gave useful feedback and a lot of helpful supplementary material. Gives many opportunities for some extra credit as well, which was appreciated.
Great Professor! Definitely recommend him!
I do not think I performed this well with interest in a subject before. His assignments also were very understandable and easy to code involving a small mental breakdown, but isn't coding like that in general? Overall, I do think I will take his class if offered in my master's journey.
In my experience, Professor Ustun demonstrated exceptional professional abilities in his teaching approach and the clarity with which he conveyed course material. He employed a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, interactive discussions, and hands-on activities, to cater to diverse learning styles within the classroom.
He is best
One of the best professors I have ever had.
He is a great Professor and an empathetic one. He knows what is important and focuses on them.
Professor is seems to enjoy teaching. Lectures and homework don't always correspond. Homework seems repetitive. Mainly uses Tensorflow (tf, python). Concepts covered, but implementation not the goal. Instead, the goal seems to be experimentation with the tf library and hyperparameters.
Lectures are very scattered, created as the lecture is going on, with live coding /debugging and live drawing of diagrams. It is not well linked to what we need to do on the homework. He was sick the first week and did not change the schedule to adapt to this cancellation. The Group Project grading system encourages noncontributors.
He is well knowledgeable and teaching technique is so good.
I learned many aspects of Neural Networks using TensorFlow and enjoyed the in-class exercise, including tackling challenging CNN class projects.
Overall, a very good professor. A lot of in-class demonstrations and good at explaining things. Be prepared for a group project for this course, but extra credit opportunities are offered. This is definitely a course where you would benefit from having a decent python background before taking the class
Good professor. Beware of group projects, but some extra credit opportunities. The class is definitely meant to have a strong python background.
Teaches good
he is a good professor
He is amazing
great experience
Getting a good grade isn't hard, can learn a lot if you put in the effort. Few assignments, some much longer than others.
Professor was highly supportive.
The professor is highly skilled and knowledgeable. His teaching style is engaging and interactive, making classes enjoyable. He have a clear way of explaining complex topics, which helps students understand the material easily and also approachable, willing to help students outside of class.
Excellent professor
The professor is very knowledgeable and his classes are engaging. He explains complex topics clearly, and is approachable for extra help. While the work can be challenging, especially for those without a strong Python background, the extra credit opportunities and unstuck study ai tools make this course manageable.
very flexible and easygoing professor! I would love to take it again!
Prof. Ustun is very knowledgeable. He gives us room for creativity when it comes to working our project. And given the number of different projects he needs to get familiar with during the quarter, he always give quality feedbacks and put a lot of effort in understanding and reviewing student's work.
He's very cool lecture.. love his classes
Depth of Knowledge: Professor has a deep and broad understanding of the material. This enables him to connect concepts across different areas, and provide real-world examples that enhance learning. Also, responded to student feedback, adjusting his pace or approach based on how students are absorbing the material.
Overall a great professor, Just get your work done and he will give honest feedback.
Prof Ustun's lectures were good, often set aside time in lectures to go through examples to prepare you for assignments. No exams at all. First couple weeks is just learning R and a few packages. I found some of his explanations unclear, but he was willing to answer questions. Email was hit or miss though. Decent intro class. Would recommend.
For the DSC 672 capstone he gives a lot of freedom around what kind of project you want to do which has been great. Very clear on the guidelines for project part requirements, and the schedule is clearly laid out so you can work ahead easily. Wish I would've taken more classes with him over my grad degree.
Amazing Professor! I wish every DePaul teacher was like Mr. Ustun. He does not micromanage his students, and focuses on what truly matters. He likes to give research paper presentation assignments which allowed us to focus in depth on any research topic outside of class. Fair grader
This was my second course with Professor Ustun. The main focus of the course (and majority of your final grade) is the group project. There was not any supplemental material outside of the project except for two presentations on published studies and a presentation on a software/library/package of your choosing.
The class is centered around a group project with loose guidelines, where we had to provide semi-regular updates. There were also other, smaller assignments, such as paper presentations and a software presentation. Overall, the class does require you to put in the work, however, it is not overly challenging as the professor is very understanding.
Enjoyed this class! Prof. Ustun was very helpful, gave good feedback on our project, and always easy to reach out to with any questions.
The professor is pretty clear on what the course will include. Reading the syllabus gives you everything you need to know about the course and what is expected of you.
Was very knowledgeable on the subject and walked us through the process step by step. I definitely enjoyed the course and felt inspired when it came to the final project.
Very good professor
Amazing professor! Enjoyed my class lectures, never got bored. If I get a chance to select his subjects, will definitely retake his classes.
Great professor
By using examples straight from business tasks, encouraging discussion, and coding with the class, the professor helped make concepts from the book easier to apply. The advice was helpful and arrived whenever necessary, so students could enhance their analytical ability and improve how their project turned out.
He explains everything in clear and never ever leaves students with questions. I gained a lot of practical knowledge because of this professors methods and kind of submissions we have in our project.
Very supportive and knowledgeable. Always backs students and helps to learn the subject. And Very patient.
