take pop. geography with miyares. Knows her stuff - organized and states things clearly. She gives you the midterm to do at home, the final is open book. The only difficulty is the lab, but if you team up with a friend, you'll get 10s!
Population Geography was an interesting class. A little bit of work is involved, but she was a good, fair teacher.
go to class, take good notes (from after midterm to final)and yes, team up with a friend on lab exercises and you'll get an easy A. Take home midterm, labs, do your work for your group presentation and take good notes for the final (open book)....
She is SO boring, and not nice at all. She lost a paper of mine and denied it. Gave too much homework. Talked about her son all the time. Don't take her if you can avoid it.
Very understandable. Extremely interesting material, has a lot of knowledge. Her classes require a lot of work, but it's worth it. One of the best i've ever had.
A wonderful professor. She knows her stuff and is very passion about it. You learn a lot from her and as long as you do her work, you will get an A. She gives chances for extra credit, what more would you want.
Find a friend who took her a previous semester and get their labs. The labs do NOT change from semester to semester, maybe only the lab numbers, but the works is still the same - luckily she hasn't caught on yet - easy 10s then. Plus, the midterms are the same too!
I had this professor and I was not happy with her. For one she rambles on tooooooo much and secondly she has a problem accepting the fact that she did something wrong. I had her a couple of years ago and she not only lost my paper but also two of my assignments causing me an F To top it off she DENIED losing it! Not a bad teacher just a big liar.
Make sure you do all 10 labs, which are on Excel. She gives you the formulas, but goes extremely quickly in class. Team up with someone or you will get lost. She also assings a group project, which is semi-painful. You have to do a neighborhood study. Overall, she is a great professor b/c she is extremely knowledgeable and passionate.
This professor is the best. You not only will learn from her but you will want to know more after the class is over. There is a lot of work but the tests reflect word for word her discussions in class. She is great and a very fair grader. Take for any class she is offering.
Not only was she rude and unpleasent but she slammed the door in my face when i needed to speak to her. This woman needs an attitude adjustment and needs to learn manners!! She sucks!
This teacher is so full of knowledge it was a pleasure to take her class. Very interesting and the tests are not so bad either. Take it during the summer semester because everything is open notebook/textbook. If you are into learning something about geography take her. EXCELLENT!!!
I had been with her three times. It is sure that her classes are so tough and a require a lot of works. However, you can learn when you are done with that. Even though she is not fun or giving smile... Even though I didn't get good grades in her classes, I can say she is one of outstanding professors who do have real knowlege.

This class is what you make of it, and so is Miyares herself. She's very blunt and may seem rude, but is actually quite nice and very inspiring if you get to know her. I'll be with her for two more courses coming up, and don't mind having her again.
Professor Miyares is EXCELLENT! Took this class to fulfill a requirement and now its part of my major. She makes the information interesting & relates it to current situations. Lectures are interesting and correspond to tests. She explains the text really well!! Im taking 2 more class w/ her and can't wait! Hunter needs more professors like this!!!
This Professor is fabulous. She gives you a lot of work, but it only helps you grade if you do it. And you actually learn something whether you want to or not. I would highly recommend this professor. She has great stories about Buffalo, Hawaii and Arizona.
Great teacher and very funny. Even gives you a break by sometimes letting you hand in assignments late.SHe also gives extra credit.
Prof. Miyares is an excellent teacher. She teaches very well and provides great examples. You will do great in this class if you do all the work given!
Prof Miyares is amazing! She is so kind and understanding. 3 projects, weekly db assignments (half a page, 3/4 at the most), a lot of them are common sense. She also gives many extra credit opportunities. Online Midterm, Paper final. Great teacher.

very easy class. weekly hw assignments consisting of 2-3 short answer questions. 3 field projects that were very easy to do. prof miyares is very lenient on late assignments. also extra credit is given out to boost grades. attendance is not mandatory. overall very easy to get an A in this class
I took an online class.It was not easy because you have to read and post answers every week.You have 4 field projects.One of them really sucks because you have to go to Hempstead. You have 1 research paper. If you work hard and do everything on time you will get a good grade.The professor is very helpful and gives you a chance to improve your grade
Amazing class! She elevated my interest in the topic so much that Im considering majoring in Goeg now. The projects were so much fun bc they sent you to places you would never consider going. Overall, the class is worth taking and is not hard at all.
This woman is ridiculous! She is rude and blah! She stutters and stumbles in her words, constantly saying "um.. ah, yea, uh. so yea." it's so distracting anf annoying. her class is so boring! It's not supposed to be a lab class but you have to do 10 labs that count for most of your grade. Don't take her for GER credits, not worth it.
This professor really deserves an F but for her few funny short stores, I gave her a D-. Otherwise, she is rude and disrespectful. I asked her for help once because she put me into a group I didn't like and she just said no- thats part of life! Don't expect to learn that much, her lectures are all over the place and out of order as is her attitude.
This Professor epitomizes Soviet Hunter. She is so stubborn and inflexible about everything you ask her for. You don't really learn that much in her class because it meets twice a week and once a week is her stupid lab. This class is more writing than a writing intensive class!
What a rude, unhelpful woman. She once scolded an entire class for "emailing her for help after 5pm." You have to do a lab in Excel and write a 3 page lab report each week. Her midterm is online and open-book with a 3 day time limit. The final is no longer open book. You are pretty much on your own for this class.
One of the best teachers at Hunter. I learned so much out of lectures, sure the labs we're a bit tedious but if you can keep up with her then no sweat. Pretty clear about what she wants, just pay attention and write all the notes. I never even got to the book, that's how clear she was!!
Love her! This class is a lot of work but if you just do it, you'll get an A. There are 8 lab write-ups, a midterm, final and group project. The labs require that you analyze data, which isn't too difficult. I learned so much in this class. I took it in the summer and even though I spent a ton of time on the homework, I don't regret taking it.
WARNING: PLAYS FAVORITES! If you think the few good comments make her a good professor, you are out of your mind. By the way, if you see it says Schlott is taking the course, she is just teaching part of the the lab, Miyares is still the main professor. It's not that her class is hard, its that she is inconsiderate and extremely rude.
Horrible. The class is interesting but you are on your own. She does not lecture often, the class meets twice a week one of which is lab. The labs do NOT relate to the lectures. Great professor, have tons of works to do but only to boost your grade, the final (which is the only thing that are close book) only count for 20 percent of your total grade and after the extra credit she give you only need to get half in the final and you will get a A. Also use a lot of example in class to make it interest.

It was an online class and I have to say it wasn't all that bad. Be responsible and keep up with the work. Really it isn't bad 4 trips, reading responses and discussions and a final paper. I ended up learning a lot from everything. I wouldn't say she is rude, but she has very little patience for people who can't pick up things fast.
Just do the weekly assignments and the field projects and hello to your A! she's fun when she teaches! you will understand everything clearly!!

Took her for popgeo. She was okay. Her labs take alot of time though and are heavy on excel. Sways the class into what she specifically is interested in.. (ex looking up pop of 50 different Hispanic origins in NYC meanwhile everybody else has 2 or 3) I got an A. Do your work and you'll do good. Not particularly fond of her though.
Easy class to get a A, assigns weekly assignments with chapter quizzes and video responses, along with 3 field projects where you take subway trips. She has a lot of interesting stories to tell and makes this class interesting although it's a lecture. Would recommend her definitely!
Had her as a professor in Hawaii. She was great. Very knowledgable and passionate about the subject. Although we were out there for class she didn't mind what we did as long as it didn't interfere with class time. Loved her.
I dont understand all the people bashing this teacher..i had her for 101 and 241 online and they were both extremely easy. for 101 as long as you go to every class and take notes you'll be fine and 241 i took online and she literally has step by step videos showing you how to do the labs and basically gives you the answers easy A if you're not lazy
Took this course over the summer, BEWARE! She gives you 10 quizes, 20 short answers, and an essay to complete in one week, every week for 8 weeks. If you're planning on taking this course over the summer, make sure you put some time aside!
enough work throughout semester to keep you very busy. attendance is mandatory since tests are based on class slides. test format is a bit rough, i'd prefer MC over short-answer. the class was interesting, enough that i'm taking another geog class w/ her. field reports are simple, just requires a good bit of time.

I took the online GEOG 241 class with her. I got an A in the class but it was a lot of work. I had to write a paper, a quiz with I forgot how many questions, and participate in the discussion on blackboard. If you're taking this class, know that it's a lot of work and you'll have to spend a lot of time if you want an A.
I took this class online. If you have a real interest in Geography and you will major in Geography, then take this class. It's not that this professor is tough,the thing is this class is too tough, particularly if you do not like maths, everyday lab with dozens of excel tables. Set plenty of time aside. I got A+ ; I did a lot to do this class.
Miyares is a Post-Modern Feminist Activist. She loves computers because they're genderless. She loathes Republicans, and if she suspects you have Republican sympathies: She Will Punish You & Play Every Dirty Trick Imaginable!
She is very sweet and helpful. She's a smart professor who knows her stuff really well. I would recommend her to anyone who is willing to learn more about geography, she is also very interesting and understanding
Disappeared for weeks without responding to emails or posting assignments. Very unhelpful and judgemental. Discourages communication. Stubborn and closed-minded. The only positive is that the actual course content is pretty good.
Professor is very educated, she has a talent to give a great speech to almost any subject, it seems that she knows everything!

Very judge-mental. Gave feedback to a classmate telling him "you come across very arrogant". That's hardly subjective or constructive. Ignored all emails I sent. Assigns group projects, was MIA and slept through most of our presentations. Gave me incorrect final grade and never corrected it. Awful experience. Un-inspiring. Boring lectures.

Easy winter session online class. 7 Papers. Watch videos and write a 2-page minimum response each. Easy grader in terms of papers. But the more pages you write the higher your grade. Can resubmit paper for better grades up until last day of class. Online Final Exam is a 3-hour short answer response to 20 - 25 questions.
This online course was definitely more tedious and pedantic than it had to be. I dont recommend it if youre looking for an easy A or to fulfill a requirement. Youre better off taking an in-person class. Theres a lab due every week and the midterm has a few questions which are basically labs in and of themselves. This class isnt worth the effot
Overall, Prof. Miyares is a passionate educator and geographer. This is a fieldwork class, hence, she will send you around NYC to conduct research and write papers. There will be many readings (30-50 pages weekly) to which you have to write a weekly response paper. This class is a lot of work but also very interesting and rewarding.
Terrible professor, terrible lecture. she read off the slides, no powerpoint provided, no study sheet, heavy exam, going on and on about her personal life, I have learned nothing from her, a waste of time, take my advice. PLEASE TRY YOUR BEST TO AVOID! You have been warned! I still manage to get a good grade, but not worth it! I shoulda gotten anA+
If you take the online course prepare to work like never before. There are quizzes every week as well as insanely long assignments. They become a torture after the first week. You would literally spend hours just copying values and making tables. The midterm is the worst of all, it took at least 8 hours to complete it. AVOID HER!

She seems nice, but she gives 3 semesters of works in 1 semester. If you do not like to read and write (each) 3 thousand words every week, do not take her because it could affect your GPA and ruin your semester. Find another professor and take this class with them. But do not with her. No extra credits, midterm and final are 30% of your grades.
Write responses (2 papers per week) to the TB chapter & her long lecture videos 70% of your grade. 30% is the midterm & final: 20 short answer Qs each. She was condescending in her emails. Class is a lot of work; it seemed torturous to me after the first few weeks, but the work's not really hard: Take good notes, do work on time & be ok.
Avoid this professor at all cost. I took her class as a winter break class thinking and hoping it was an easy A. She make you writing two papers a week based on videos that are not educational or helpful. Some of them are just music videos with pictures of the places were supposed to be learning about. Her final was 18 short answers. AVOID!!!!
You need to take good notes on lectures and write a lot on labs to do well in this class. The labs are pretty time consuming but she makes videos that literally guide us through the labs. Also, if you hand labs in on time, she gives you a chance to fix your mistakes and get 100 if you got any points off. Grading is very clear and she grades fast
Professor Miyares is a little harsh in her feedback on papers but overall, the class was easy. One decent sized paper a week. A little difficult because the videos she provides does not discuss the essay questions so you are completely on your own to research. Extra credit available every week. The final was 20 short essay questions.
Awful Professor, when given grades doesnt provide and explanation and reasoning as to why it was the grade received. In addition many papers every week and not clear instructions.
Had to write lots of essays for this class and do my own research however, the hard work paid off. She also gave great feedback and would respond to all my emails!
Professor Miyares finds a unique way to make interesting information painful. With weekly papers given, and often unclear instructions for each paper, this class is a joy! Don't forget the 12 year old lecture recordings with construction noises in the background! This class reeks of the lazy "copy, paste" teaching structure from year to year.
Do not take this course, I thought it would be easy due to it being online and a "geography" course. Every week a good amount of reading and writing needs to be done followed by a lab report due every week. These lab reports take a good amount of time and consist of her explaining it from videos made in the prehistoric era.
The asynchronous class has lots of homework (not hard, just a time killer), and exams are not really timed. A tip for lab reports, once you get a good score on one, follow that format to get a consistent score on the rest. If there are any big labs, make sure to prepare to type up a lot. I think she doesn't really read your labs but more so skims.
don't do it. there's labs every week INCLUDING your spring break. after a terribly long midterm, there is a 20 table lab. This teacher does not care if your computer breaks down or you're having a life crisis, all that matters is your schoolwork actually being submitted. She expects you to read her mind through the screen for specific answers.
DO NOT TAKE! This class is difficult with weekly quizs and labs whichincludes 3-4 page essays follow up! She also uses videos from 2010 as her lecture videos and aren't any helpful at all. The labs all follow a copy and paste method and the video for labs don't help as she doesn't clearly explain what to do or wants us to figure it out on our own.
She's way too extra and unorganized, and her videos are of African quality. Please don't take her, PLEASE< SAVE YOURSELF. SHE MAKES YOU DO INSANE AMOUNTS OF WORK. GROUP PROJECT WHERE INDIVIDUALS CAN DECIDE TO DISBAND AT THE LAST MINUTE.
the grading makes it almost impossible to pass with a good grade. she is a very, very tough grader, expecting you to know it all while it's an intro class. this was absolute hell and will give you mental breakdowns. if you think: yeah, sure, just a few papers every week..WRONG. absolute. hell. don't do it to yourself.take another writing intensive

She was kinda cold to me sometimes, and the workload was SUPER intense, so freaking much for me to handle.
So much lab and work to do. The midterm and final part I is things we didn't even learn about. Her lecture is so so so confusing and you can't even understand. Don't take her class if you don't want to be so stress out.
She uses her videos from years ago, she be mad for no reason she hate students. She also vague. Take credit/nocredit if you can
Great professor for a seminar setting. Lots of reading and weekly assignments, but will give you an A if you show up and put in some effort. Highly recommend for non-lab classes. Lecture can go off on tangents easily but overall great professor.
Her things on blackboard are so disorganized. It's like she's lazy so she just gives you a ton of things and you have to figure it out for yourself, then when she starts grading she's obsessed with little petty details. Not to mention she has attitude when you contact her. Completely passable class though if you do the work, just a pain in the butt
dont ever think of taking a class with her. so much work and she doesnt update her folders and then when you submit the work, she would say you didnt submit with the new format and her videos is back from 2020. you would fail if you take with her
Very kind professor who is well versed in teaching and using excel. Not that much work for a three credit async class. Be on top of your labs its about 40% of your grade. Midterm based on labs and final was based on lectures. Gives good feedback and allows for resubmissions. Not as bad as people make her out to be. Also tiny quiz for each lecture.
Professor Miyares was one of the most frustrating professors to learn from. She makes you conduct repetitive calculations for each lab, when you could do three and learn the same amount. Grades very strictly without any feedback unless you email her to specifically ask. DON'T TAKE HER CLASSES unless you hate free time and want 8+ hrs. of hw a week.
Took this as an elective, a lot of extra work for no reason, lot of excel calculations when we learned it the first few times. lectures + labs every week + exams, so a lot of work. Doing too much for what most students are taking as an elective/degree requirement class. Wouldn't take again.
A lot of homework in the form of lecture quizzes every week + labs with excel data and essays. All this after the lectures, honestly doing too much for an elective. Grades over small details.
I would never take another class with her again because she is extremely nit-picking in her criticism. She will take a disproportionate amount of points off your grade for a mistake like a typo even when she knows you know what is correct. It's infuriating to take her class. She is not a fair grader. Do not take if you want your sanity or free time
I'm not sure where to start. The fact that I'm writing a review mid-semester speaks for itself. This class is stressful and, honestly, not worth it. I love to write and do little research papers but every week?? My goodness, I'm losing my marbles. I've never failed or considered dropping a class but if I have to watch another video, I just might.
DO NOT TAKE HER. Too much coursework for each week. Her videos make no sense at times and require too much work in excel. An essay very week is enough as it is. The videos and questions are outdated because she uses an old version of excel.
Terrible professor. A research paper qeekly plus quizzes equals no free time. This professor thinks her class is the only one we are taking, and it is an elective regardless. Makes us do a lot of extra Excel calculations when we would have learned it fine the first few times. RUNNN

The level of work she assigns is not something I have experienced in any of my other undergraduate classes, and I finished school this semester. Her class felt like a graduate level course. Her class is doable, but you really need to devote time and work hard to succeed. I wouldn't suggest this course to people who do not want to be stressed out.
This class is an easy A if you have the time and effort, however, there's a bunch of work needed to get that grade. This includes things such as weekly quizzes and assignments which she's very picky about. Along with that there's a group project near the end of the course along with the midterms and finals having multiple parts. Beware.

Do not take her, the worst professor I have taken at hunter, was worked to death. She does not care about her students. Zero empathy and compassion, doesn't give extensions. The only professor to make me feel helpless. Her online classes will take a majority of your time. DO NOT take this class with other hard classes. Super stressful class.
Terrible, terrible, terrible. She is an arbitrary grader and lords her power over her students. Does not teach, instead providing 10-15 year old YouTube videos as her main curriculum. Unempathetic and patronizing in correspondences. Unhelpful and callous. Take this course if you want to feel like a felon on probation. Will be reporting her.
If you watch the lectures and do the labs ahead of time, you can definitely pass the course. She can be harsh on grading the labs, but just make sure to go hard on the results section. Drag things out and give as many explanations and conclusion for the analyses that you'll have from the data you obtain.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I have never had a worse experience in a class than I am currently having in this one. This is a THREE credit course yet the Professor has treated it as a 4 credit course. There is way too much work, and the labs are just busy work, and teach you nothing. Waste of time and money.
I made a dumb mistake and didn't listen to the rating about the prof believing people were being lazy. I was so wrong. Don't take this even if it double dips into two classes ur mental health is not worth it. Prof hasn't updated labs and has been using the same video the past 15 years (probably even longer)
people writing bad reviews for her 241 class must have not realized this was a WI section. Yes I was writing 2/3 2 page lab reports a week, but the class expectations were reasonable, professor responded quickly to emails, and I learned a lot. Workload was ok for an asynch class, probably 6/8 hours watching lectures, doing quizzes, and writing labs

Her class is overwhelming and isolating, definitely don't feel inspired or motivated by anything that is taught.
She is so bad i had a family emergency and i missed on exam and she didnt care and send me an email attacking me for not caring avoid her
Listen, the majority of what has been posted about this professor is very accurate! She is very tough but you can tell she is really good at what she does. This class is not for the faint of heart. I agree with how someone mentioned that this class feels like its a 4-credit course when it is only a 3-credit course. Protect your mental health!
DONT TAKE! I thought it would be fine after seeing this class had a low rating but I was wrong. I ended up getting an A but it was a nightmare took like 10 hours of work a week and was very hard. Would have rather take an in person class.

So I took her Geo 150 summer course asynchronous and it was too easy. She gives one 5 paragraph paper a week with the exception of one of the week's being a slideshow. She is definitely an easy grader and she hands tons of extra credit. Her material is old YouTube vids but honestly they are super short most of the time so just be timelv.
She is very unclear about what you are doing wrong. I kept getting notes that my calculations were incorrect but she refused to elaborate on how to do them correctly. She also is quite petty as she revised my grade to drop 0.46 points off my assignment. Who does that to someone who is already struggling in their class???
Most ppl take asynchronous summer classes for the flexibility… due dates are every 2 days. Midterm was open for a day and a half. Doesn't give clear feedback. Major regret tbh
Do not take any classes with her, I was lucky that I was able to swap classes because she provides no feedback and she's a strict grader. She only allows a 1 time time revision. It's difficult to pass her class because the videos posted are outdated, and the workload is unmanageable, although it's a 3 credit course.
To whoever is thinking of taking this class, just read this. I am a student who has never gotten below an A-, even in 300 lvl classes. It's not easy. Her information is ancient, her grading scheme is horrid, and she doesn't care about you at all. You can get an A, but it'll be hell as any mistake on the few labs will cost an entire letter grade.
The grading is very strict and inhumane. A small mistake will result in a large number of points being deducted.
BEWARE! DONT TAKE HER! AVOID TAKING HER! I'd rather take another class and fail than have to put up with this class. She takes off points for the smallest mistakes. Isn't that caring either.
