Very intimidating, she took over my discussion section and seemed quite confrontational. Not very interested in debating or opinions.
She's a really great professor. At 1st she was a lil imtimidating but now i think she's great. I was mad at 1st that she didn't care about opinions, but i guess in class like this one opinions don't really matter. The reading is a whole lot, but it's all pretty interesting stuff unless ur a big ole ****. I hope she teaches more of my courses and i'd reccomend her if ur willing to be challenged.
banks is hostile, intimidating, unaproachable, and just all around mean. everytime i asked a question she looked at me like i was an idiot. her class was also extremely difficult. DO NOT TAKE CLASSES WITH HER.
She is enthusiastic, passionate about what shes teaching, and her voice is energetic so you dont zone out. Tests are easy if you pay attention to her in class. You dont necessarily need to read all the articles. Great class!!
She is really great at lecturing! She is also very passionate about what she teaches! Her class is challenging and expects her students to be on top of things and at college level writing!
If you expect to breeze by with the usual lowered expectations that most professors have of students, then don't bother enrolling in her clases! She is serious about teaching about serious about students learning. I thoroughly enjoyed all the classes I have taken with her, and would only recommend her to students serious about education!
Really great lecturer. Really entertaining. The first test she grades extremely hard but if you talk to her and discuss other material you will do better. She is very fair and the class taught me the most I have ever learned in a quarter. I definately recommend.

If you are looking to complete GE's look elsewhere. Banks teaches this class like upper division comparative lit. She makes it clear from the first day that she hates her students, and that she is much smarter than all of them. Don't plan on asking any questions either, unless you frequent her office hours to make sure she remembers your name.
Mean. Hostile. ****. Will not give you a good grade unless you frequent office hours to make sure she learns your name. Teaches intro class like an upper division comparative lit class. Grades too strictly and will not accept any viewpoints other than her own. Must copy down her opinions word for word to get a decent grade. But even then you wont
Her lectures are very interesting, but I have recommended all my friends against taking her classes because of her hostile attitude and unapproachable demeanor. Quite possibly the most stressful class I've ever taken, and it was not worth it.
Banks is difficult, intimidating, and serious about her work. Not an easy class, although she is a very entertaining lecturer. She asks that students participate. you should, if you KNOW the answer. Don't waste her time. Overall, I became very interested in the subject, and I enjoyed and completed all of the reading, but my grade said differently.
Look, Prof. Banks doesn't play and most won't like her. But she's brilliant and passionate, but she will eat you up if you don't do the reading. DO NOT take a low div class with her but I'd def recommend someone taking an up div course with her. It's intellectually rigorous and interesting. Keep an open mind and a thick skin and u'll do fine
Banks is an absolutely amazing teacher. People that say otherwise are bitter because they did not get the grade that they wanted. I am not going to lie this class is very hard and takes a lot of work. However, I got an A and it is definitely possible to get an A in her class. I have never learned so much from an individual class before. Loved her!
I loved her and this class. The class can be percieved as difficult because she demands a lot. BUT, if you go to lecture and section, you will get a good grade. She is brilliant and passionate. Take this class if you actually want to learn.
horrific human being. if she's even human...
Banks is argumentative, obstinate, and temperamental. She is also of exceptional intelligence and a leading expert in her field; her books are well written and insightful. However, her lectures are limited to a tedious page-by-page analysis of these books and her students are berated for venturing opinions that differ from hers. Avoid at all costs!
Cuts you down before you're done talking (some would consider that challenging, others would consider it absurd). States that all white people are inherently **** (according to her definition). Constantly stutters. Smile, agree, and call her doctor = you get an A. Question her opinion = pray you live long enough to see your grade. Stay away.
I enjoyed the material but Banks is way too power hungry. She watches the classes every move & I felt uncomfortable to go to her for help. If you like reading A LOT sign up for this class. Tests were absolutely stupid...every test was at least 3 essays...study guides are helpful but be prepared to study for at least 2 weeks in advance. ridiculous.
At first I thought she didn't like me because I'm a white male (and she deals with this in class), but I think it's because I'm a student. Don't take this class with her. I retook it with a different professor and went from an F to an A, literally. Seriously, this class is just bad news. And her TA's were no better!
Banks comes off strong, but that control is to prevent people from saying ignorant/confusing things. Compared to other classes, reading isnt the most demanding. The material is drilled into you. You read the text, go over it in lect., then go over the same material in sect. If you dont get it by then, you wont. Test are quest from lecture. Nopapers
Professor Banks is great! I took her honors section and she is actually very supportive and helpful if you show her you are serious about your education. She is tough and so is her class, but if you do the reading, go to class, and try to get to know her, you'll do fine and learn so much! She is one of those profs that I will never forget.
Yes she is tough because she expects the best from her students, but she is the best professor I have ever had. Never has a teacher before commanded such attention from an entire lecture hall. Never did a cell phone go off and never did people stroll in late. Best experience I've had at UCSB thus far, this class should be a university requirement.
I went to lecture, section, and did ALL the reading. I thought I did well on the midterm, but I got a C. When I talked to my TA, she couldn't explain how she graded it. Instead, she told me not to write an intro or conclusion for the essay portion, and not to interpret or expand on info from lecture. I've never been in a class that discouraged that
Honestly, I dont really understand the negative comments AT ALL. if you do the work, you will get a good grade. pople are just upset because the class CHALLENGES YOU. its college. thats what is supposed to happen. she is an amazingly knowledgeable professor. super helpful. I have taken 3 classes with her and would take any more offered.
She may seem difficult at first, but don't let that discourage you. If you do the work, come to class, and read the material (which is interesting most of the time), you'll do fine. Loved this class!
Worst teacher of all my four years. Rude, inconsiderate, completely out of line. Halted class and berated students in front of the entire room for being a few minutes late or "looking bored". Approached her in office hours regarding a family issue and was yelled at and left in tears. STAY AWAY.
Really really hard class for being a lower division course. However, the things you learn are very INTERESTING and she's a really really smart person. Sometimes funny, but most of all really intimidating :/ I'm scared to ask questions, go to her office hours, or respond to questions in class. Tests are not multiple choice, they are essays.
AMAZING lecturer, not so great teacher. Expects her students to be experts in an intro class. I attended every lecture, did all the readings, & studied my ass off, I still struggled. Never gives clear expectations for her tests: BE EXTREMELY SPECIFIC! I won't take anymore bl st classes because of her. Learned EXTREMELY valuable stuff though.
She is a really great professor but is definitely tough. Don't expect to take this class as an easy A for a GE. She expects hard work from students and you will be rewarded if you pay attention, do the readings, and really study. The people who hate her the most are the ones who don't give her the respect she deserves for being an awesome teacher.
Worst professor ever. tells ta's to NOT give feedback on exams. Will belittle you in class if you go to office hours or answer a question wrong. not a bad teacher but a terrible person. also no one got an a on the midterm in a class of 200+
Very difficult class. If you do your work you will do fine. her bark is bigger than her bight. a bit intimidating but the class was very interesting. I definitely learned a lot. I wouldn't recommend taking it your first quarter of college unless you are really dedicated. reading is MANDATORY to do well in the class!
Before this class I was interested in learning about black studies.Didn't need this class just wanted to take it out of interest. This class has made me never want to take a blst class again. Prof. Banks is a hateful woman. The tests are hard but my disappointment is not with the hard work but with the lack of respect Banks has for her students
Professor Banks is SUPER intense. For an undergrad class, she expects way too much from her students. There is a lot of reading, and exams are in-class essays. Warning, you WILL use the entire blue book in just a hour and fifteen minute period. Yes, she is very intelligent and occasionally funny, but I never felt comfortable asking her questions.
The most horrible class Ever. She was never Clear and the tests (2 mid and 1 final) were essay format, completely out of left field. Dont take if you want an A.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF INGRID BANKS IS TEACHING IT. WAIT FOR ANOTHER TEACHER. TRUST ME.
Banks expects a lot from an intro class, but that's because she refuses to take away from the merit of Black Studies. If you attend lecture and do all the readings, youll get at least a b. you get a study sheet for both midterms and the final. if you know the answers to those questions, you'll be fine. do the work, actually listen, youll learn alot
I respect that she has such high expectations and really does want the best for her students. But, as others have said, for an undergrad Intro course she expects you to be unreasonably specific and detailed. Work hard, study hard, do the reading, come to lecture, and you're guaranteed a B. For an A, you better put in twice as much effort.
If you want to pass this class go to office hours. I did not go to hers because she only had it once a week at inconvenient times. TA's will save your grade. Put in a lot of work and did extra credit just to pull off a B. Horrible class you wont be rewarded.
She was the scariest woman I've ever had the displeasure of learning from. Her tests were ridiculously difficult- if you memorized the reader then you'd MAYBE pass. I failed all tests, yet got a B on the in class paper- obviously there's something wrong with your tests if that happens. AVOID HER CLASSES.
Honestly, I don't see why people are so scared of Banks. Yes, she is intimdating BUT she is NOT asking anything unreasonable from students. She wants her students to do the reading and understand the concepts. That doesn't sound too hard. She is an amazing professor and you can learn a lot from her! Loved her 133 class and I'm waiting to take 1!
She expects an absurd amount of memorization and detail. You basically have to memorize a 400 page reader and on tests write 3 essays in 1 hour. The class is not worth the GEs it fulfills, I consider myself a very hardworking student and I got a B-. The average was a low D, if not an F. If you want an interesting, straightforward GE dont take this
As many people have said her class is hard and for an intro class it is a lot of work but its college deal with it. She is a great professor you need to go to office hours either the TA or hers. Find the time and put the effort in. Even only getting a B this has been one o my most rewarding classes
Don't take this class if you are just looking for an easy GE. You will not pass.I am a third year student and this is the first class I have gotten below a B. She expects you to memorize her exact terms. If you don't exactly write what she wants, she will fail you. No room for opinion anywhere. Stay away!
The material is relevant and it is very interesting. Unfortunately, this class has impossible expectations. Banks is not reasonable whatsoever. She holds office hours late yet she chews her students out one by one. Any good professor would not have 30 students waiting desperately in her hallway every time she holds office hours. -rating-0:/
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Banks has a borderline personality disorder and is on a power trip. More then half our class dropped and out of the remaining 90 of us 45 have F's. She is mean, unhelpful, there is a 2 hour wait for her office hour and she discourages the TAs from answering questions. Withdraw at once.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Teacher loves to call students out and make the tests miserable. The tests are all written and must include direct citations or points are automatically deducted. Take at your own risk if you don't believe this
DROP THE CLASS. A precise and extensive knowledge of every excerpt read and its author is expected. Requires memorizing the writings of at least 8 separate authors, totaling to ~250 pages per exam. The exam questions are a mixed bag but are generally vague and ask about a movement or an author barely covered. Mistakes result in SEVERE deductions!!
Brilliant Professor!! Direct & clear. NOT a class for those looking for an EASY A. Concept driven course...memorization & regurgitation will not help you pass this class. Attend all lectures/sections & go to office hours if you want to pass. Prof. makes time for students. Extremely challenging but it made me a better student overall. I got a B :)
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
She's a really great teacher. She's direct, gives you what she wants you to take out of the text, and as long as you pay attention, you'll be fine. She makes you read a lot and do study guides, but you really learn a lot and as long as you stay on top of the readings, you're going to be great. Make connections between the texts too.
This Professor is very knowledgeable and cares so much about the material and learning. If you pay attention, follow directions, and do the reading you can get an A. And get prepared for upper div courses where you have to write longer papers, read denser material, and make strong arguments. This class helped me do better in ALL of my courses.
She does not do justice to her cause and she is not a decent human being. I would never take another class with her.
Class is designed to be unpassable. The large majority of the class failed, I got lucky with a C-. There were no As. She teaches as if punishing her students. Constantly angry and completely unapproachable. Avoid at all costs. Only people who like her class seem to be suffering from white guilt.
AVOID! If you want intellectual rigor- take physics. Banks offers rigor of the worst sort- rote regurgitation of facts straight from her books and inflexible historical/sociological 'interpretations'. Banks has a very narrow worldview, and expects the same of her students. If you want to memorize her books and repeat them verbatim, take this class.
I LOVE this professor! Read carefully. Take good notes. Pr Banks cares about the material and student learning. She has more office hours than anyone on campus and is always available. She expects you to bring it, so do it. If you can't and you think college is one long expensive party, then yeah, drop this class.
Worst Professor in the history of my attendance at UCSB. She comes in acting like the world is out to get her. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you're just trying to get an ethnicity GE out of the way. Go for Chicano Studies
This professor has a bad attitude and acts like she does not like the students
DROP. She's a good lecturer and I like the styles of her lectures but she's an absolutely terrible teacher. Her tests demand a lot of reading (+250 pages per exam). Completely unapproachable and will give you a better grade than you deserve on the test if you participate in class. Class acts like an upper doc comparative literature class.
Good lecturer, but she expects you to absorb every word TESTS ARE GRADED CRITICALLY The key to passing is keeping up with the work and putting in the time (a lot required). Unfortunately it is a very dry subject at times. Does not seem approachable at most times. Saw her at her happiest the day of the final....
She gets off to students failing
Professor Banks is an amazing lecturer! Going to class is important for a good grade. Definitely commands the respect of her students. I was scared at first, but she is actually an extremely intelligent and rational person. She loves discussing things in office hours (if you actually come prepared) and it helps to be on a 1st name basis!!!
Not very helpful
The content of this class is amazing, but I wish I had another professor. She's incredibly tough and demeaning. If you need to take it, take time doing the readings and make sure you understand them. Go to her office hours! Always go to class. If you fail the first test, don't give up bc she likes to see improvement and will reward you for it.
A lot of the reviews stress that she covers great material & passionately covers the topics in lecture. While that is true, she regularly humiliates students in class and interjects her own personal bias and anger into her course discussions. She resorts to rude and unprofessional comments which reflect poorly on her department and the university
Ingrid Banks assigns 6 readings a week (20/30 dense pages each). She gives an exam, midterm, final and a course paper. Majority of people have gotten an F on the exam and course paper. She expects stellar answers in specific form. Any other forms are discouraged and individual thought is rooted out and shot in the street. Don't take. Not rewarding
Dr. Banks is incredibly passionate about Black Studies. However, in order to pass you need to put in an immense amount of work. She rewards students who regularly attend office hours and participate in class. During exams be VERY specific and you will be okay. Do not take this course if you are not interested in black studies!
DO NOT TAKE. Passionate individual about the topics but a horrible teacher and instructor, her criticism is anything but constructive and most of the people who take this class fail, her teaching reflects poorly on the department and university and I had already taken another Bl St course before taking this class so it's not just bl st in general.
Dont expect any sort of feedback on papers unless you consider NO constructive criticism. She is a scholar not a teacher . Her response to everything is if you dont understand then you need to read the book again. Gee thanks Banks Im glad I came to office hours for such wonderful help. NOT!!!! If you dont need it for your major dont take.
The hardest class I have ever taken, but also one of my favorite classes at UCSB. Professor Banks pushed me, but I am forever grateful. 10/10 recommend!
Terrible class, not approachable, bad feedback, heed the warning, do not take, interesting readings though, first day of class 100 people current class standing at 25 people,
Do NOT take this class if you can help it. She is never thorough in grading and leaves no constructive comments. 3 midterms and one paper. She gave so many people Ds and Fs on midterms. Going to her office hours is no help because she just says what she does in class. Does not care about opinion. Really awful class.
DO NOT TAKE. If you love yourself, DO NOT TAKE. Banks is extremely difficult, super picky with discussion answers, shames students if one doesn't know the right answer, unapproachable, doesnt reply to emails, tells us often how she doesnt have time for office hours & is literally the worst professor to take. please save yourself the stress & tears.
Banks is a great lecturer, I will say that. However, she is the worst grader and gives ZERO feedback on written assignments. Even if you read and analyze to your best ability, your answer is WRONG if it isn't what she would have said word for word. She isn't helpful & not understanding as a professor at all. Wouldn't take if you don't need it.
Banks is rude and arrogant, constantly making statements about her own intelligence and the righteousness of her personal journey. The course is thereby structured as the cult of Ingrid Banks and you better be on her page if you expect to get by. This means agreeing with everything that comes out of her mouth and everything you read. Dont take.
I've taken 2 of her classes and FAILED the first time. She makes expectations known and yes, she's intimidating and has a very high bar, but when visiting office hours you'll quickly see she wants those who work for their grade to succeed. Understand that her exams follow a formula and thought process & you'll be happy with your grade. I got a B+
I think the class is a bit too much for an intro class, super interesting but a bit distracting when you have a ton of other classes. She's a great professor and person once you get to meet her. One of the hardest classes at UCSB I've taken, no lie.
Basically, Professor Banks is a very very very difficult professor. She has a specific vision for what she wants and if you don't live up to the expectation, yeah you're done for. The class I took has not been offered since Winter 2018 which says something. She is often rude and offensive when it comes to criticism. 0/10 would take again for sure.
Worst professor ever. Too many readings(one book each week). Tough grade. She does not really know what she is talking about and answer your question unclearly.
Grades like normal during a pandemic. Heavy reading along with many quizzes. Spare yourselves the burden.
If you are not passionate about Black Studies and the topics discussed in this class, you will not do well. You always have to give this course your all when you work on it. Extremely difficult but also informational and rewarding. Must have good writing skills and remember facts easily. Quite time-consuming so be prepared to work for your grade.
Professor Banks is a stellar educator and individual. Dr. Banks really cares about her students and this quarter she made the transition to online easy. Her classes are eye opening and I encourage all to take a class with her! But do not slack on reading every week, always go to office hours, and ask if you need help as this class has alot of info.
I took her class first semester of my Freshman year, received a D+. Retook the class Spring quarter with another professor and received an A. Midterms and Final are subjective.I went to office hours to discuss midterm and the feedback was that this class wasnt a popularity contest and if I thought I was the first person shes made cry I was wrong
She's clearly passionate and kind as a professor. Great lectures. However, grading requirements are so unclear and it feels impossible to answer correctly. I wanted to give her a higher grade but can't I in good faith because of how confusing the expectations are for the class.
Trust me, do NOT take this class. I have an F in this class, but do not let that fool you! In fact, I have one of the top 10% of grades in the entire class. Yup. She literally gives out 20%s to kids on these exams. She does not follow her syllabus at all, and oh yeah, did I mention the 100 pages of reading per week? Please don't do it to yourself.
Professor Banks is very passionate, allowing for engaging lectures. However, her grading is very strict: if you don't say exactly what she's looking for then you're wrong. You could be missing one word and get a 20% lower grade. Her feedback on quizzes were not helpful at all and actually seemed quite mean. Interesting content but very overwhelming
Loved talking to Professor Banks during Office Hours but wow, this class was rough. Need to be SUPER specific on quizzes and tests. Great information, but this was definitely the toughest class I've ever taken. Do Not take as a Freshman your first quarter. Might just want to skip period.
Here is how I ended with a 98: watch every lecture + write down EVERY WORD she says about the readings. EVERYTHING. Use these for quiz ans!!!Keep track of any hints/questions, and find answers to them. I skimmed the readings; only read the first + last sentences of every paragraph + intros/conclusions. Only fully read imp parts. Be a v good writer.
She expects you to memorize every interpretation on the readings as if it's gospel. No room to think critically, no room to think period. Want an A? You'll need to jot down every word that comes out of her mouth until your hand aches, and then regurgitate them verbatim on her essay tests. Will not respond to email--says so in class.
