First and foremost, I'd like to say that Ingrid is great teacher, she's very lenient on grading and offers multiple opportunities for extra credit. Granted, I'm not very good at math, but I put in the effort and sought Ingrid's help on problems I was having, she'll be glad to give you an A as long as you show some understanding of the topics.
Teacher was very rude and constantly made me feel like I was dumb. When I got an answer wrong she didn't help me she just gave me this look like I was stupid and said no no. I would never take her class again. I don't want to be treated like this.
Ingrid was an awesome teacher! A little hard to understand as English is NOT her first language but she is willing to help and truly wants her students to learn the material and succeed!
Basically expect to learn by yourself. Lectures are confusing, she assumes that we know everything.
Horakova is an excellent professor. I had taken her class for TMATH 120 as well and loved it. She explains the material very well but you have to get used to her accent. She offers plenty of extra credit to boost your test and quiz scores and offers practice quiz and test that help tremendously. If you put the work in you will get an "a".
You have a quiz or test every Monday. But she gives 5-10 suggested practice problems to do in the book that are basically the same as the quiz questions. Homework basically has unlimited chances to get it right. There are a lot of extra credit options. And she's very nice and energetic.
Although, she does give out extra points to her students and gives them the chance to increase their grade, but in her lectures she rushes the lessons too fast and when you ask her a question she gives you a certain look like "really?you should know this."She can be often times rude and expects you to know it all like she does. Don't take her class!
She is a good professor. Her test is reasonable to lecture and suggested problem. This class doesn't have homework, so grades are based on quizzes, exams, and final. Do all suggested problem then you can score high on the test. The only thing I don't like is her test is long compare to the time she gave us to do. 12 questions in 1 hour for exam!
While it did feel like we were moving at a fast pace compared to other classes I have taken, Ingrid made sure we were well prepared for all of our quizes and exams and gave out TONS of extra credit opportunities. She is great at explaining things in different ways so you never feel lost. I got over 100% in the class. Take her! You won't regret it
Good explanations in class. Calculus is hard but that's not her fault. You definitely need to keep up with homework assignments (no late homework accepted) but she tells you what problems to study for tests/quizzes and if you speak up quickly with the right answers in class you can earn extra credit points for tests/quizzes
Homework is online. Weekly quizzes, 2 midterms and a final. Gives lots of prep work for quizzes and tests that is harder than the actual test so most people do well on tests. Final was rough but it is a difficult class.
Ingrid is a great teacher. She gives a lot of opportunity for extra credit, so take advantage of that. The language barrier is a little difficult at times, but you get used to it by the end of the quarter. The math is tough, and I would recommend putting in time at the TLC.
Worst teacher I've had so far at this school. Period.
Horak is a very good teacher. Her lectures were clear and assignments are very similar to lectures. Exams are HEAVILY based on lectures and homework assignments. Make sure you understand what's on your homework and lectures. Very easy class. She gives TONS of extra credit. Make sure you answer lots of questions on exam weeks.
You can tell that she cares about her students and what she is teaching. She has a positive attitude which makes lectures more enjoyable. She also gives a lot of extra credit which is a plus. However, I did have to work harder to fully understand topics since it seemed sometimes larger topics were brushed over quickly in lecture.
She was really nice.
Course is full of a ton of material that has to be covered really fast but she does a good job of explaining concepts & gives out "cheatsheets" as a reminder of concepts just covered (formulas for summation; logical properties like modus tollens, etc). There's so much material that tests/quizzes are hard but she grades on the curve & has Xtra credt
She's a very funny instructor and excellent professor. I didn't study as well as I should have but overall I learned quite a lot. I only wish that TCSS 322 was still an available class.
She definitely knows her stuff and can teach, but due to the amount of material covered in the class you will need to spend a lot of time studying. She gives homework weekly and sometimes offers extra credit - do'em whenever you can as you'll need it. Lectures aren't very useful as you soon get lost due to the amount of material presented at once.
Professor Horakova is not a great teacher when it comes to math. She expects that you know the material and will also look at your as if you are stupid if you don't understand a concept. I would recommend that you do not take her. Try to find another instructor that teaches that course because her course is very difficult.
English second language with a abstract class. Grades hard, and laughs at student efforts.
The material is already hard in this class and it does not help when she speeds thru it. She is a tough grader when it comes to the exams and covers so much material on each one. Be ready to put in a lot of time into the hw and not just doing the hw but extra problems to understand the material. Does give a huge amount of extra credit++++.
Definitely the worst professor I've had at UWT. Shows little compassion for her students. Offers 1 on 1 help in the 10 minutes after lecture is over and keeps office hours 2 days a week during times when everyone is in class so she can avoid students. She claims that class starts at a certain time. It begins when she walks in. Don't be late.
The amount of material covered in this course is mind boggling to begin with, and English is not her first language, so her lectures are essentially worthless. Students do not even bother asking her questions because she simply cannot articulate the ideas behind these abstract concepts in an understandable way. She is a classic gate keeper. AVOID.
Worst class of in 18 years of school. Too lazy to grade all homework, so picks potential struggles. Weights everything on tests thus less grading. Very poor explanations, laughs at student efforts, and stands in from of white board while lecturing it's material. Hard grader, no partial credit. Prepare to loose tuition for this course.
Solid teacher, knows her stuff, I took Discrete Structures with her and she is an awesome lecturer and goes to lengths to make the class entertaining. Doesn't ridicule students and tries to make things as simple and clear as possible. Tough grader on homework and tests, but very doable.
Lots of content to cover in a short amount of time, but she teaches it very well. Might be a little hard to understand her since she has an accent, but she definitely knows her stuff and you can ask her to give another example if you didn't get it the first time. Exams are worth a whopping 85% of your total grade as a whole which is a bit scary.
Really hated this class with her. Tough grader, alot of material. She makes things more confusing than they should be by trying to be abstract. She makes it even harder, almost on purpose. Half the class is completely lost, the other half is doing alright because they are taking it the second time....
I don't recommend this teacher AT ALL. She makes things harder than they really are. Gives you 6 to 10 pages of homework every week, but only grades 3 or 4 problems. You never know which problems he is going to grade. For the final, she gave us a 6 pages study guide. Half of the questions she asked were not part of the guide. Just awful.
Very little feedback on homework, and very few problems per assignment graded. If you get a homework question wrong, don't expect to either know that you did, or be told why. Leads to nasty surprises on tests when you thought you understood a topic, but were doing it wrong the whole time. Good lecturer, gives better explanations than the textbook.
This professor makes programming harder than it should. What I mean by that is the fact that whenever I ask for help she just laughs at me and tells me to figure things out myself. I can't believe I signed up for this class. She is rude and likes to laugh at my efforts of programming. I would never take another class from her.
Professor Horakova was a nice professor, her class was very hard and made you work for it, but you'll learn a lot if you take TCSS 142 with her.
The accent issue goes away after about the first week of class. There is a lot of content covered over the short 10 week period but that being said, the content itself is not hard as long as you grasp the concepts. Do well on homeworks, and review the book when needed. Tests will make up a majority of your grade so make sure to do well on them.
I like Ingrid a lot. She makes you work for it and is quite personable. I'm also failing her class. I tutor up to vector calculus and even self study discrete math. Despite this her class moves at a pace that I can't keep up with. I also don't test well & tests are 90%. If I don't drop out due to failing I would take her again.
This class covers a lot of material and she uses every minute of class to ensure that she teaches it. If you skip class there's a good chance you'll miss a chapter of material being taught. Her accent is tough for the first week but once you start to get it you forget about the accent. The class is test heavy but she gives useful practice exams.
She is tough grader. She moves really fast in lectures. I really don't recommend her class.
Her lecture is solid, but her test and grading is extremely hard. She has three test for midterms and it was 50% of the grade so if you score one bad it took a hug tone on your grade. Test was too long and complicated and doesn't give enough time for student to do it. No partial credit, either right or wrong in test
I really enjoyed Ingrid's class for Discrete. Discrete's a really tough subject to grasp and there's a lot that needs to be covered in the actual class. People that slack will get behind and I think that's where a lot of the hate for this professor comes in. She explains concepts really well and is very willing to help outside of class.
She is Okay. I mean you can understands her but her grading policies were very had 2 exams, midterm and a final. Her axcent if different and with bad English its hard to understand questions on the exams specially. Even though if you fully understand everything in the class still pass with low score. Don't take if you need more than 2.0 GPA
- Fast turnover between lecture and homework application. - She only grades some problems and homework is only worth 10% - You have to take her your questions. She is very willing to help. - Tests problems are very similar to homework problems but you have very little time to work.
Her lectures are vague and you can see she is very incompetent in what she is teaching. She explains topics in the most complicated way possible. Basically do it your self type of class, and you will often find that the problems are not as difficult as she makes them out to be. Her exams are very confusing and not a good representation of skill.
Not a hard class and fun if you pay attention through the lecture.
I would take her class again if I could her lectures are amazing and her tests are not hard if you study.
I wouldn't take ingrid she isn't qualified to teach this course. I don't think she understands what she is teaching that well which makes the class a nightmare. Be prepared to study hard for this course and have unexpected problems on exams. The first exam is a joke, the rest are probably some of the hardest you will take.
I found her lectures necessary as she often lays the groundwork for the more difficult homework problems. Her posted supplementary problems were excellent preparation for the exams in addition to the homework. She's also very pleasant in class. If you work hard on the homework you'll do very well on the exams.
I wouldnt recommend her class, she is incompetent and makes everything difficult. The subject is easy and I dont think I went to any of her lectures after the first few weeks. Her english is worse then a dog which probably contributes to the terrible lectures. Not sure why she is a professor with bad social skills.
You know the type of professor who thinks she is better than everyone else in the world and has to prove it. But in reality she has accomplished nothing. Thats her. Beware she cant explain anything because she has no experience. I never went to her class.
Professor Horakova is inept and should not be allowed to teach computer science. Her demeanor is derogatory and not constructive. Her poor english makes learning difficult and the phrasing of her questions confusing. She structures her class in a discordant manor, and doesn't want you to succeed. Avoid her at all costs if you enjoy computer science
I don't understand why someone with her personality would be a teacher. Doesn't make sense. Don't take her class.
Math does not come easily to me so I only do well in math classes where the professor is truly spectacular--Prof. Horakova is definitely one of those professors! Her lectures are interesting and clear and she's a really kind and funny person! Lots of practice problems and EC. Show up, do the work, go to her with questions and you'll be fine!
If you study the homework and notes, the tests are easy. There is also only a small amount of homework in general. She is very helpful and caring if you go in for help during office hours.
I skipped class a lot. As long as you read the assigned material and do the homework you will succeed. Tests are very similar to the homework assignments. She also gives solutions for homework and tests which helped a lot with learning the material.
Don't recommend unless you already have a strong discrete/logic background. 90% of final grade is on tests/exams. Some words can be hard to understand in class. She will grade extremely critically on exams. Posts practice exams but then will not post answers which is not helpful. I'd not personally recommend here to anyone I liked.
Too few opportunities for points, grades weighted too heavily towards the few tests that are given throughout the quarter. Not clear when answering student questions. Only take if you already have a background in discrete math.
- The HW isnt graded by her but her TA. Weve had the professor do a HW problem for us in class and when we copy it to the HW we get points off for being wrong - Very test heavy. Midterm and Final is 55% of your final grade - Mocks students for asking questions and doesnt answer the question - Part of test are T/F which means no partial credi
Ingrid teaches a CS class like a math class, resulting in mass confusion among students. Quizzes make up 30% of the overall score, but there are so few points available that even missing a few points will tank your grade. Dismisses questions and makes fun of students. Only bother with her if you already have a background in discrete structures.
The course content was not particularly difficult but the tests and quizzes are very hard to do well on. Time limit on quizzes were way to short for the amount of questions. HW assignments are worth virtually nothing. Few opportunities for points made it so you had to do well on everything. She might roast you if you ask a question. I would avoid.
There were 3 exams (total worth 45%), and 1 final exam (worth 30%) which means that exams are worth 75% of your grade. If you goof on few questions, your grades will get really messed up. The content itself is aight, but really this prof really makes it 2x more difficult. Don't take her.
Awful.
She is strict and the final was ridiculously difficult and if you get below a 60% on it you get a 1.9 grade in the class regardless of your overall percentage, meaning you can't move onto the next class in the major. I basically had to teach myself the material because I didn't learn that well from the lectures. Take someone else if you can.
lectures are very unorganized and it feels like shes just rambling the whole time, be prepared to teach yourself the material. grading scale is extremely heavy on testing, combined all the tests are around 80% of your grade. 20 multiple choice questions and 8 long answer questions. mess up 4 points and you could see your grade drop 10-15%. avoid.
Content is alright and working alongside the professor is nice during synchronous lectures however the way she teaches is problematic at times. Lectures are winged based on student questions. Follow alongside her and save your notes to look back on. It's easy to forget things from early in the class and tests are open book (not open internet)
Lectures are hard to follow. Doesn't go in depth on any subject with very few examples . Your entire grade is based on tests. Avoid taking if you have another choice.
Take her bad reviews with a grain on salt. Those are probably just scorned students because yes her class is very test heavy, but if you pay attention and study the material, the questions on her tests are very simple. She gives extra credit on tests and for participation in class. Her lectures are great imo and she does excellent job answering Qs
Professor Ingrid is a very caring and intelligent teacher, but the class subject is also difficult. The homework was not bad at all, but the class is test heavy. So if you are someone who wants to really understand discrete math and can do well with tests then this class will be fine for you.
Professor Ingrid is super nice. Pay attention in class and work hard, you will be fine. Her lectures are great and she is very caring.
Her way or no way. She treat her online class unfair. She will only talk to her in-person student and ignore her online student. She only give extra credit to in-person student. Probably the worst instructor I every had. Never had a instructor so petty and uncaring for her student education. Treat her 90 % of class which are online like animals.
This teacher is an angel if you are able to show up in person. While I can not say the same for online, it doesn't matter what the other choice is, if you can go in person, choose Horakova. She moves slowly through her lectures in order to better explain complex subjects in easy terms to digest. Even a kindergartner could take this course and pass.
This professor was amazing loved her. I know the ratings on here are very biased but she was really an amazing professor she knows the subject well and teaches you with a helping hand. She explains everything very clearly and does a great job with her lectures. 3 Exams and about 7-8 HWs. Exams are most of the grade but if you do HWs you'll be fine.
Course said "no prior programming experience required" nothing could be farther from the truth. If you have never seen programming before, getting anything higher than B-/C will be very difficult. Those who have an A in the class are well beyond the level we're learning and everyone else is anxious and struggling to pass. You've been warned.
This professor is not bad as people make her out to be. She does have thick accent, but if you actually try it is not hard to understand her. She makes her own homework and labs, and they are all doable based on the week's lecture. It is easy to pass and get an A, you just have to make an effort. Her lectures are not powerpoints, which is good.
She does not make exceptions for anyone and will not go into depth either. She will not help you outside of the class if emailed and does not give much input when speaking. Her accent makes it a thousand times harder to understand her and that is if she is not stumbling on her words every minute.
Professor doesn't accommodate for disabled students who have hard time hearing. "Notes" are disgustingly spartan, to the point of being useless and posted solutions are hard to follow. Teacher is a small class teacher, it is apparent she cannot teach a bigger class. Will not offer lecture recordings. Thick h2f accent, 3 exams make or break GPA. DNT
Professor Ingrid, is a hard professor to learn from due to her abilities to explain in detail what is being written and explaining what and how it's happening, on top of that there is a thick language barrier where you can have difficult time comprehending what is being said. Tests are worth alot do bad equal not passing.
Teacher with a thick accent struggled to communicate effectively. Inadequate responses to questions hindered understanding. Poor language proficiency impacted the entire learning environment, leaving a frustrating and unsatisfying experience. When questions are asked she doesn't answer them to the answer of the student. UWT needs to hire a new prof
She was an alright professor... Always felt hard when asking questions, she would either go off on a student, or would answer the question in a difficult way to us to understand. All the exams, and quizzes were heavy based towards your grades. The practice exams were similar but not spot on. The labs were difficult, it was similar to the HW.
Gives out lots of free points. You probably will succeed in this class if you come and put in a reasonable effort. Her accent is thick but you can guess a lot of the context by what is being shown on the big screen.
She is a funny person and makes the class fun, but gives very long homework and has 3 exams. Exams are heavy and hard with too many questions but very less time provided. If you care about your grade, then don't take it.
Ingrid is by far the worst professor I've ever had. Lectures are a waste of time, the course structure is old-school, and her grading system feels arbitrary/rigid. 80% of the grade is two 10-page midterms/one 14-page final, and 20% homework. There's no method of recourse if you fumble an exam. Don't take her class. Take Marriott or Chinn instead.
Some professors are too harsh, other professors give you little opportunity to show growth. Ingrid? Not only does she combine both into one, but it almost feels inventive... something she takes pride in. She's not a good professor. You'll end up failing if you take her. For the sake of all that is good, choose another class or skip the quarter.
You will not pass this class if you fail the final exam, even if you did well on the previous quiz.
She doesn't care if you're sick or something happened, she will not give you extra time to complete homework or tests and she gets way too close to talk and it makes me uncomfortable little weird. Overall she grades really bad and I mean really bad. She just copies off of chatGPT for questions and answers for the homework's. she's really rude too.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. She doesn't teach — after the first week, it's just skimming slides. She doesn't care if students succeed and seems to grade harshly on purpose. No real instruction, just confusing exams. A terrible mix of bad teaching and bad grading. Avoid if possible.
The worst professor, she's rude, loud and will put you on the spot. she throws rude snarky comments at students and will laugh in your face if you ask her to reexplain something you didnt get during the lecture.
IMHO she was a fantastic professor and her lectures were always engaging, her discrete structures course is more math based whereas Donald Chinn teaches a more logic based/coding approach. However, incredibly tough grader. It's EXAM HEAVY, there are 3 exams total and you bomb 1 then you're screwed. Xtra Credit is participation card, worth 0.25%
