This guy is a great professor. He's a bit younger than a lot of profs, but he clearly knows what he's talking about and is passionate about his subject. He also cares about his students, is good answering questions, and he clearly knows how to teach.
Ion is very knowledgeable and speaks very quickly. As long as you enojoy math, his lessons make a lot of sense. Sometimes all over the place but overall he tries very hard to make everyone understand. He's very passionate about math thats for sure
he moves very fast, but that is more the fault of the coarseload. But that does not matter, because he will spend hours with you untill you untill you get a concept. A very nice guy.
Is the only teacher that I've had so far that has made me feel like my questions were stupid.
He is a nice guy but has a strong accent and it makes it even more difficult to understand what he is teaching. You absolutely can't miss a class and have to take detailed notes.
Can be a difficult class and he marks hard on exams. But he's a nice guy to his students and he covers all the material thoroughly, so he definetely did his job. The difficulty level of the course isn't his fault. He definetely tries his best.
Such a good teacher!! Easy exam if you focus on what he taught in class.
try hard and put all effort. Great instructor
Probably the best math teacher I've had in my life so far. He gives good notes relevant to the assignments, tests you on what he taught you, and marks fairly provided you know your material. Also very friendly in office hours if you need help. Sometimes funny too. Highly recommended instructor.
Ion is very fast, but somehow very clear! He's almost overly helpful...
Marks extremely hard on exams, hard to understand.
Although he has a little bit accent, you can get used to it soon and it doesn't affect you to understand the class, because his notes are very clear and logical. He will explain the concept first, and then makes many helpful examples
Ion tried very hard to teach us as well as he could, but he was very very difficult to understand and taught a very tough course. He always offered help if you couldn't understand a concept, but he himself was hard to understand.
Very good professor. His notes are very organized and the examples he gives are very helpful and relevant to both assignments and exams. It is true that he marks hard, but if you attend class, read his notes and put an effort into the assignments you will be well prepared and it will not be an issue. If you want a friendly, helpful prof get him.
Sometimes a bit hard to understand as english isn't his first language, but he's crazy smart and is very willing to help you. His examples and notes are super helpful with the assignments and the exams so attend class with this guy! Also, he hates when people even whisper in his class, so I guess in some ways, that's a good thing.
Not the best teacher around. Nice guy, but kind of high strung and a bit intimidating. Tests were easy, lectures were hard?!
Ion is a very personable guy who has a passion for what he's teaching as well as a personal interest in the mathemathics. His accent is not a problem. You do have to make sure you're awake in his class as he goes through material quickly (though energetically). Tries to make the difficult material as clear as possible. Highly recommended.
One of the best professors around if you actually want to learn. Tests were not easy but fair, mostly based on lecture material. He knows the material inside out and genuinely cares about your progress if you need help. His lectures are well paced and planned, there's a bit of an accent but it's fairly easy to get used to.
very good prof, loves math and is very good at explaining things. Gives very good notes and is very organized. Best math prof I've had
fast and messy. though he is a good teacher. if you put the effort into his class you will see the results. lots of theory. spend alot of time on the pactice exams; tests are exact same format.
Any Disney fans out there? I swear, Ion looks SO much like the Disney Ichabod Crane. All he needs is to croon a song and ride a horse. This guy is a wonderful teacher, though. His exams are fair, cover the basics in the material, and treats all students equally with a loving passion. Structures a very difficult class in a clear and precise way
He tends to explain things too fast and is a very hard marker. If you dont find an answer on an exam HIS way, then you will get like 0.25 out of 2. Even if you get the right answer and show your work in getting the answer.
Great teacher. If you go to class, you shouldn't have a problem.
Best teacher ever!GET into his class! Really nice guy.He really wants to help students succeed.Explains things VERY clearly. If you work hard, you'll do good.
Even if you hate or bad at Math, just go to class and you will do fine. His Math class was the fastest class I have ever took in my whole life.
Yep k goood. Get used to those three words if you are taking his class. He has an accent but you will get used to it. This is a tough course unless you are a calculus whiz but he makes it easier than it is. His notes are very helpful and he gives examples similar to every problem in your homework assignments. He is a prof who cares.
The best professor i've ever had. He loves math very much and really wants students do good. Highly recommanded.
He is a hard marker so if you understand math well but make a lot of mechanical errors you will fail hehe
Would not recommend for Math 113. He goes way to fast for someone who has never taken calculus and his theory is hard to follow. Hard to ask questions as you go in class because its too fast to comprehend anything. Very nice guy though.
The best teacher i have ever had!!! Math is hard, however he explains things well and never makes anyone feel like their questions are dumb. So smart but not arrogant. Tests are very fair and he is soo helpful in office hours. A really nice person also

"goooooooooooooood" he knows his stuff, hes kind of odd looking but he has a good heart. i enjoy him.
Excellent Prof. His examples are GOLD. Without fail his exams pertain to your examples in the notes. Do the homework, do the practice exams and you're well on your way.
As many of these comments say he is amazing! He'll prepare you so well not only for his class but for future math classes. If you are an engineering student you MUST get him as a teacher. He is fast but clear. He is tough but fair, all his exams are what you cover in class examples. The only way to do well in math is to work your ass off, but it's
He knows his ****. Very structure and consistent lectures. VERY helpful during office hours. Never makes any question sound stupid and always knows how to answer them. You need to take notes, especially the examples. They make assignments easier. Calculus is a hard and fussy subject. He Makes it as easy as it gets. You need to put work into it.
He knows the material well and makes sure students have any questions after he does examples on the board. He goes extremely fast and it's sometimes hard to keep up with him. He is a hard marker on his difficult exams. Good Luck.
Alright teacher but hard to understand sometimes.
Very indepth exams. He goes very fast in class, but if you can keep up you will do good. His examples show up on exams so write them all down. very organized. He has a small accent but he is clear when he talks. Very helpful outside of class. Explains things very well. If you are having trouble go talk to him and he will clarify things very quickly
I dropped out of Bica's class after the second midterm. He goes at a VERY fast pace and its hard to keep up with his notes (and hard to read them quite often). I would not recommend Ion Bica for any math student that wants to pass math!! His exams are practically impossible and when you think you did good he finds a billion other ways to fail you.
Knows subject in depth, what students to know the material, gives very similar problems in class to what is on the exams, doesn't give any tricky questions. If you do homework, assignments, attend class, you'll be more that fine!
he sucks. try to avoid his class
Did he speak English???!!! totally lost the way!! can't understand what he actually talk about....drop drop drop.....drop the class, and drop tears.....money drops too!!!
He teaches very well, is helpful, and has an European accent. Memorize the theory throughly because it will be tested in the exams. The exams are complex, hard, and very in depth. He gives examples that are very similar to the homework questions but not on the exam. The class is fast-paced. Recommend to those who have a >90% average in Math 31.
I used to love math in high school, had an 85% or higher average and took Math 31 to prepare for this course. He is not a good teacher at all and is very hard to understand. He teachers things in the most confusing way. I recommend trying to get another teacher. I paid $40 or more a week for a tutor for this course and ended with a D. Waste of mone
Never again...ever. Horrible experience.
This guy is the worst professor I have ever had in my life. He can't even speak English and half the time you don't even know what he's writing on the board. He teaches stuff in the most messed up way possible, and even if you ask for help, you'll be more confused than before. If you have him, drop his class immediately and switch.
The worst, dropped and will choose a class with another prof next semester.
Don't go with this guy.
Switch to a different prof if you get Bica! I found he didn't make much sense and explained everything in a very complicated way. I took Math 31 AP and did well, but I got a C- in this class because his exams seem easy, but he docks you marks for EVERYTHING! If it's not done his way you can forget about passing
The WORST, never again.
I will never take a class with Bica ever again.
No good. I highly suggest dropping him just like I did. He has no interest in passing students!
He cannot speak any English. His "notes" are just scribbles on the board that resembles an 8 year olds drawing project. Hes appaling.
Terrible professor. He speaks down to his students with arrogance when you go to him for help after class. Knows his material thoroughly however he has NO CLUE how to teach it to students who are just starting calculus. Hard to understand and his writing is very hard to read. I finished with an A but I give full credit to old notes from Math 31.
Switch out of his class as soon as you can. The worst prof in Grant MacEwan. Rude, goes on rants if he sees a cellphone. His accent is too strong, notes on the board are HORRIBLE. His exams are unreal. If you like calculus, and want to do good, DROP HIS CLASS!!!!
Terrible teacher. First mid term class average was 49 percent, and he claims it was not his fault. Drop ASAP. Very ignorant and hard to understand. I am forced to go to a second profs math class in order to understand the material.
Horrible teacher, does not help you at all and his test are extremely hard. He preaches on how good his notes are, and says they are key to passing his exams. He is straight garbage considering everyone fails his exam and if you want to have a good GPA get out immediately. Class average was 48% with him and other profs class was 70%!! DROP!!
I used to love math; now I don't. He has no intrest in students and won't help if you don't understand the "theory". No office time, no math helptime, very hard to contact outside of class. doesn't care about trouble students have. He just wants to work on his PhD research. loves "curve ball tests" any math instructor is better.
WORST PROFESSOR ON EARTH, cares nothing about his students, i'm sure he wants them to all fail, half way through the semester there was only 8 kids left in the class that tells you something
Anybody have old midterms and finals from this class... otherwise i'm going to fail
Part one You know how everyone you talk to when they are older talk about that one "crazy hard" professor. well if you want to have a story to tell, be sure to go to Bica's class. You will forever remember him. He is an incredibly difficult teacher, and expects you to know everything that was taught prior in math 100. Hardest class of my life.
this is the worst prof at grant macewan. drop his class immediately!
Fast-paced classes but very, very helpful. I failed calculus in high school but am now straddling an A... highly recommended. Teaches you the "easy way" to do everything.
WORST PROF EVER!!!! DROP!!!!
very hard to understand, has a heavy accent. He works very fast and it is hard to keep up.
Ok guys, i would like your attention please, i would like to start the review...very poor notes on the white board, goes on random tangents all the time, hard to follow along when hes teaching the thoery. I would recommend a differnt prof, yaaa?
Ion was a great prof and I was successful mostly because of him. He does go thru the material fast but he doesn't have a choice order to get it done but he also puts up awesome notes and tons of extra questions on blackboard which was my #1 source (an amazing tool) when studying. I didn't find his accent to be an issue and he's always super helpful
My favorite math teacher of all time
Amazing notes, does questions to help with your hw, fair exams. Attending class is mandatory and dont let the first few classes determine his great teaching. He's very caring about his students passing. You get use to his accent guys (all math profs have accents) Use his practice sheets on blackboard, life savers!
VERY difficult class for the mathematically impaired. Ioan really tries to help his students, but you have to put in the work to do well. Attend every class or you'll be completely lost. The practise sheets are SO helpful. Take advantage of the math help centre, and Ioan is always willing to help outside class. I still needed a tutor though!
He's extremely helpful. His midterms are very fair but the final was kinda hard. In the beggining its hard to understand him but you will get use to his accent very quickly. Practicing problems in the textbook is crucial and I would recommend him!
His classes are very boring and confusing. He is a very hard marker and is not afraid to fail students. Many of my classmates have also failed or dropped out of his class.
Ion was great He is hands down the most enthusiastic prof I've ever seen. He has a positive attitude that really rubs off on you. He goes through the material at a great pace and encourages class participation. It is a difficult class, but he provides great practice questions so its up to you to practice the material he's taught you.
I read some pretty bad reviews on here before but he's actually not that bad. He's really passionate about teaching math and he explains things fairly well, but, I strongly recommend you review your Math 30 and Math 31 notes. The class makes a lot more sense if you've taken Math 31, overall, the prof is good.
He's a really great prof. He LOVES teaching and helps students out alot. HE does alot of practice questions in class and gives practice midterms. It's math so it's not an easy class, if you do all the assignments and do extra practice you'll be fine. Exam are hard cuz they expect you to know alot but he teaches pretty well so they are very do-able.
I simply can not understand the previous reviews he's received. He is very helpful, always treats his students with the utmost respect, and his accent is easily understood. He is very clear on what he expects on the mid terms and assignments. He even makes jokes in class, no problem with him whatsoever. One of my best profs yet.
There isn't much more to say here other than the fact that I can't stand this prof. I find him rude and his teaching style to be poor. He wastes a ton of time doing theory and definitions that you will never use rather than practicing examples. I did fine in the class because I'm pretty good at math but I still suggest finding different prof.
He is a really good teacher and very passionate about math. He has an accent but it doesn't affect his teacher. He cares about his students and is willing to help a lot after class.
Ion Bica, was without a doubt my favourite prof this semester. He loves teaching and is very passionate about math. He is beyond willing to help out during office hours (as well as in class). His tests are straight forward and based off of practice tests and assignments. His accent and grammar are a little annoying at time - but does not hinder.
Ion is fantastic, he clearly tells you what will be on the exams and his practice sheets that he posts online are lifesavers! Always incredibly respectful to his students and don't let his accent intimidate you, after the first lecture you get used to it.
Taking Calculus is one of the more confusing things I've had to do but Ion is incredibly passionate, it makes you want to learn the material. Calculus is tough and you won't do well if you don't put in the effort but Ion is extremely helpful, always making himself available during office hours to answer questions.
Very passionate about Math and respectful to students, but hard to understand at times. Will do well if you go by how he solves questions. He is knowledgeable, but would take with someone else.
Ion was a great prof and I would definitely take his class again. I am in my first year and he made everything better by being there for help and being energetic in the classroom, it made me want to learn. He is a tough marker but if you do the work he assigns then you will not have any problems.
Ion was by far my favourite prof all semester long. He is super enthusiastic and loves what he does. He really does care about your success but if you don't work for it you will have trouble. His tests are hard so if you don't understand something see him right away. If you like math, he's an amazing prof.
Very fine professor. Very good at teaching. Wonderful theory (a bit too much imho)
Really helpful and does his best to help you as much as possible. The class was pretty hard in general so im glad he was so helpful. Final was really hard though
Really good Professor. He goes over everything you need to know for your midterm and gives great practice midterms which are very similar to the actual midterms.
For the first assignment, I had some difficulty involving a question that we hadn't explicitly discussed in class. He seemed very open to helping me and gave me the opportunity to work through the answer with him so that I understood it. If I had to take another math class, thank goodness I don't, I would take it with him.
Ion is the sweetest professor out there. He is willing to help whenever necessary and is extremely passionate about the courses he teaches. Would definitely take his class again!
I haven't had Dr. Bica for a class, personally, but I have received help from him in the math help centre on multiple occasions. He understands how scary and awful math is for a lot of people and he is extremely passionate about making sure people understand and are not afraid of the material. He saved my grade! I'd take him for math any day.
Ion was the best math teacher I've ever had. He cares about all his students and if you have a question he will take the time to answer it fully. He fully prepares you for all his tests, and as long as you pay attention in class and study before his tests you'll do fine.
Ion is an amazing professor. He takes things very slowly to ensure that he never loses a student while explaining a concept. If you have a strong mathematics background, you might find his lectures a bit slow, but that is probably the best thing possible. Just read his notes, ask questions, do the homework & practice exams, you will ace his tests!
During the first three weeks of his class I thought that this professor would be just the guy to help me through the problems I had with math because his passion was through the roof and he seemed very friendly. After I went to his overcrowded help hours I left feeling belittled at times like I was stupid for not understanding what he was saying.
Ion has a genuine love for math which made the class a lot less painful. He can be difficult to understand at first because of his accent but you definitely get used to it. Overall he was a good math teacher but he made you solve questions his way on a test even if you knew another proper way from high school which was a bit annoying. Hilarious too
Best prof I've had so far in university. Take him whenever you have the chance.
Had this Prof for Math 114 and he managed to make math fun. His love for math made it easy to learn. Made this difficult course much easier.
Most passionate prof I've ever had. He made calculus fun and he thoroughly goes through all concepts and examples in class. He tells you things to focus on for the exams. Do your homework and the practice exams and you'll do just fine in this difficult class!
Amazing guy who truly cares about his students. As long as you pay attention in class you will find his exams very similar to lecture examples.
Favourite professor ever. He is the most caring professor I have ever encountered, he even offered me to keep in touch after the course was done. His exams were fair. Just do the practice ones and you should be prepared. DO THE HOMEWORK. He makes this abstract course make sense. Just pay attention in class and participate and you'll ace it.
Dr. Bica is engaging, knowledgeable and cares a lot. However, he doesn't explain concepts much. He'll show you how to calculate something without telling you what it is first. At best he'll give you a formal definition but the intuition behind what you are learning is not taught. Be prepared to hunt for online explinations for what he is teaching.
Incredible teacher.
Dr. Ion Bica is a good math prof. He is kind and patient. He always spend lots of time to answer student's questions. He can spend an hour to answer one question for you, because he want to make you 100% know how to do this kind of questions. So i would recommend you to take his math class.
Ion was amazing! his lectures were somewhat heavy but he would always go slow and make sure each student was understanding the material! I was concerned for calc but he made the experience much easier. Highly recommend!
Ion was a great professor! He is extremely passionate about math which made the course more interesting. He is a very kind person and is always willing to help. I would recommend going to all the lectures as they are long and it is easy to fall behind. I would definitely take him again because he cares about his students success a lot.
Take his class! Hes an amazing prof. Hes very kind, humble and cares about the success of his students. Hes very passionate about math so it makes the lectures less intimidating. He gives detailed notes/examples that are helpful for studying. He expects a certain format for written questions but if you follow it youll get full marks!
He definitely cares for his students. He likes to explain the theory behind it then show you examples how to do it which actually made me more understand how to solve it. You can get hold of him outside of class easily! Make sure you don't skip any of his class and do all of the assignments. Practice papers are quite similar to the actual exam.
Ion is extremely passionate about math which makes it easier to understand because he breaks it down well and so enthusiastically. His accent isn't too hard to understand and he is very helpful.
He provides good examples in class and does questions that are similar to the homework. His homework assignments were easy and resembled ones on the quizzes and final. Great prof and easy to approach. His accent wasn't too hard to get through.
I've loved math until I took math 31 in high school and struggled through it. I dreaded signing up for this class, but Ion made me fall in love with math again. He is very passionate about math and he cares about his students' success. He tells you what he expects on tests and is very clear when explaining things. Take his class any chance you get!
Amazing teacher! very sweet , remembers students names and is caring. He is very clear and does not miss any steps. If you are enrolling in a Math114 don't think twice. he has a passion for math that is very wholesome and he will share that excitement with the class. Very straight forward class just do practice questions and you should be fine.
Amazing Professor. I hope he teaches many other math courses. He is fantastic in his subject.
I just hope he teaches more courses.
He genuinely cares about how his students are doing and memorized all of our names in my class! Sometimes his teaching can get a little confusing, however if you stay after class and ask for clarification he will stay with you until you 100% understand! I would easily take another math course with him!
The class itself is hard but Ion presented examples in a structured format which made it easier to follow along. Ion is extremely passionate about math which made the class so much more enjoyable. I can 100% say he loves his students so do not hesitate to ask questions and get clarification. His positivity resonates beyond math
I had him for MATH102 in engg. Amazing prof for that course; hes hilarious, caring, and explains very well each concept. The assignments are long, however you will learn the material by the end of it. Lectures are a must because he does hand out notes. Office hours for help is great and he will make sure you understand the material.
Really inspiring guy. Makes you want to attend each class! Ion really cares about his students. He is a professor who understands that the material can be hard to learn and knows that students deal with other struggles beyond math. I recommend him 100% He is the most enthusiastic prof I've ever had at Macewan
Dr. Bica is a real gem, he gives lots of examples and is always willing to help each student succeed. He LOVES math but can also explain what he is teaching very well. Would recommend!
Ion is one of the most enthusiastic, joyful, caring profs I've ever had. He cares first and foremost about a positive relationship between students and prof and the exchange of knowledge, not just facts. His lectures are hard but worth it, and he goes above and beyond if you contact him outside of class.
This guys writing is horrid. Even a preschooler can write better than him. Dont take him if you are having an online class
Consisering that MacEwan only has a few good Math Professors, I'd say Ion Bica is pretty good, he does give a lot of examples that relate to the assignments which is helpful. However, he only grants you 35 minutes for the quizzes which in my opinion is not a lot of time especially for math which makes it stressful. That can affect performance.
As someone who despises Math, Ion made it enjoyable because of his enthusiasm. He's always responded to my emails fast and has been very helpful doing so. Follow along with his examples in his lectures and you'll be set. However I do agree with the review saying the time for quizzes is too short. It makes it very stressful.
Ion was one of the best profs I have ever had. He genuinely cares about his students, and is filled with so much joy and passion with what he does. Tests consist of relevant material, and of what has been in lectures. He loves to give theory and proofs - which gives you a wider understanding. You do need to put in effort - practice! :) Recommend!!
Ion is one of those professors who genuinely cares about what they do. He wholeheartedly loves math which can be seen through how thorough he is with each topic and his examples. The assignments and quizzes are fair. He gives numerous examples even outside the lecture material so you can practice! Overall an amazing prof!
This prof is nice, however, he is a picky marker when it comes to his exams and quizzes. You have to be clear with how you got everything, since all his exams are written. A good thing about him is that his exams are easier than the practice, so you are well prepared. One thing I did not like, was how long the online lectures were.
Ion was a very nice and caring prof. He replied to emails super fast and was super helpful when students need help. For this class you will have assignment every week. I recommend doing these because they reflect what will be asked in his quizzes and term exam.
He is a very tough grader. In order to get any marks you must have all of the steps that he does written out perfectly. No marks are given if the work isn't shown perfectly. The final exam was worth 32% of our entire grade. The lectures were really long and I found his notes quite difficult to read.
Ion is a nice guy; however, his teaching skills aren't great. He schedules synchronous quizzes at 6 pm on Friday nights every week. He offers formal explanations of calculus theory; however, converting that formal definition into a practical understanding isn't easy and is generally difficult to understand. I recommend finding other professors.
practice midterm and final are carbon copies of the actual midterm and final.struggling to understand?ask for help.He won't stop tell you understand.math 102 he hates using visuals (limits you to the 2 and 3 dimensions).online? his notes are great. but listen to the lectures. that's how you understand a concept instead of memorizing it.
Ion LOVES math, and sees the beauty of it. He strives to share that beauty and does a wonderful job. I've never had a math prof make math so interesting, or work so painstakingly to help us understand the how and why. as a non-math student, he made me look forward to math class.. that's pretty wild.
Learning is easy
Ion is a joy and is such a wonderful teacher
Tough grader, zero compassion for students, very demotivating. His actual rating shows as 3.5 if you search for him here but this page shows higher. Arrogant/prideful and makes his students co-dependent on him if they're not aware of what he's doing. You NEED Math 31 for his class - even A+ in 99 won't cut it. Avoid unless you're a self-learner.
Ion is one the few good math professor at MacEwan. His exams are very similar to his practice exams. Math 114 is a hard class but Ion makes sure to go with the flow of class.
He's not very good at explaining concepts. He'll show examples of assignment questions which is nice but it doesn't translate into his tests. The theory is there but the in-depth explanations are missing behind what you learn in class. Hope you like searching for explanations on google and youtube because you'll need it.
He has a accent which makes it hard to understand. Only graded by 24% assignment, 36% midterm and 40% final. Exams were hard, 6 ques all of them long. I ran out of time, and also gives penalty for each minute. Question given were not from assignment but rather from notes which we didn't practice for. It was really hard to pull up your average.
Professor Bica was probably the best I've had for an online class. His notes make sense and are decently organized, he was accessible via email, the exams were fair and his online schedule made keeping up with lectures easy. Stay on top of the work before it piles up and you will do well in his class.
Nice and happy guy, but as a professor he is very hard on his students. Very tough grader, you must do exactly the steps he does otherwise he will not give you marks. Hard to understand his explanations.
Ion is such a cool guy. He is a tough but fair grader. He does not require the textbook but I would recommend getting it because I felt he didn't always provide enough practice questions to work your way into a concept. Calc is gonna be a grind no matter what but Ion makes it better by being such a positive and happy dude.
If you are a math major, Ion might be a feasible option... if you are anything else and trying to fill bredth requirements, do not take a math class with Ion. He teaches second and third year material in a first year course. Class average is well below 50% and he will not curve grades. 6+ hours of additional online lecture per week.
Solid professor. His tests reflect what he teaches in class, and he prepares you well with many examples.
Ion is a tough but fair prof. His explanations can be tricky, so using resources like Unstuck study alongside the textbook is key for success. The grind is real, but Ion's positive energy makes it better.
Ion loves math and actually loves teaching, which seems to be rare for math/stats profs. As for the class, if you look over the online material before the in-person class and do the practice questions before the exam, you'll do absolutely fine.
Professor Bica is very pleasant and super excited to teach math 120. Although it gets confusing thats more on the class rather than the professor. Hybrid class was nice although there was no online video for 3.0 which was disappointing and tough to learn. Awesome Prof, hope the best for him.
Honestly goated prof. He was super caring and engaging, and was always available outside classes. His video lectures are all you need, and his prep tests are exactly like his in person ones. He always gave partial marks even if you got the wrong answer, as long as you showed an understanding of the question, the theory and the solution. 5/5
Ion is a great prof and shows his love for mathematics in his teaching. He wants you to do well and he is willing to do whatever it takes to get you there. Doing his hybrid class meant you need to be disciplined but honestly there was no disadvantge to learning with this course being hybrid. Thoroughly explains, knows material very well.
He is a tough grader.
Ion is a great prof who really knows his stuff. He is super passionate about mathematics and seems to really care about teaching it to his students. His exams are super tough but they reflect exactly what he teaches. He provides great support through his office hours and really wants to help if you are struggling at all. Overall super great prof !
DO NOT TAKE MATH 114 WITH BICA UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!! as much as nice he is as person. He is the toughest grader you'll ever meet. I had an 86% average on the quizzes, but I got 50% on the midterm and 31% on the final, which made get a grade of D+ even when I had 60% average in the class overall. You will never understand what is he expecting.
This professor doesn't seem to understand English well, and I honestly don't know how he became a professor. MacEwan should re-evaluate its hiring standards. He seemed calm at first but became rude over time. Communication was poor, and he always replied to emails rudely and was never respectful.
He is a tough grader, he acts rude whenever i ask something either in mail or in class or during the test. He always brags about how much experience he has in teaching. Rather than explaining something humbly, he just tells me that i have this much experience I have that much experience. It seems rude. He is a tough grader as well.
1 word: RUN. I took a hybrid class with him, but he just reused old online lectures. In-person sessions were useless. He'd skim key concepts, then repeat the basics endlessly. Has a weird obsession with trig values (sin, cos, etc.), which are vital to have memorized for his tests. If I ever take Math 114 again, I'll avoid Ion Bica like the plague.
I'm taking Calculus 2 and let me tell you: everything is man teaches is lacking. He misses key concepts, skims through important concepts, doesn't bother explaining anything, and dismisses you by saying "it's simple" when you do ask. Avoid him. I have to re-teach myself Calc 1 with the help of my current prof.
I have never had such an awesome teacher like him. Despite his accent, he is absolutely willing to help you get over whatever you are struggling with. When teaching, he is also in depth on how he explains concepts in every single topic. I would really recommend picking him since he helps you get over your fear of math especially during office hrs!
He's very kind and understanding, and he genuinely wants students to succeed. I would recommend going to class even if it's a hybrid course as it's helpful seeing him do the questions live instead of his voiced over notes. Study the extra examples he posts as they're likely very similar to the questions on his midterms and final! Overall great!
Although he is kind and caring, his lecture videos is too long and has way too many unnecessary information that makes you overwhelmed and think that you need to remember everything. Don't just dont.
Lectures were long and drawn out in my opinion, and I was not a fan of his teaching style. However I did like how he communicates often through email. Exams were tough, being all written and a lot of questions for a relatively short amount of time. Would not take his class again, but you can do well in it if you are willing to put in a lot of time.
quizzes and midterm/final questions are almost exactly like those practiced in class so if u attend as much as possible you should be solid! prof is very kind person as well always motivating students
Amazing prof. You can tell he actually cares about his students and is passionate about teaching. He always tries to show the beauty in math and make it more interesting. If you have questions, he will explain in detail and make sure you understand. His exams match up perfectly to his practice questions. The goat fr
This guy is actually the goat just to put it simply. Every class the time is utilized at a good pace with no moments to spare everything is straight teaching. He is a phenomenal teacher and he genuinely cares about the math itself. Nothing is better than a teacher who has a real passion for the subject. Mke sure you go to every lecture and REVIEW
