I agree; she's tough, but fair and helpful

not very clear on what she expects for essays, but is she knows her stuff/is nice
Real tough but really good teacher
Terrible. Only two people passed the first essay, highest mark was 60%.
hard marker, not clear on what she expects
hard but very fair grader, she's there to help you.
Even a grad student could not believe what she was teaching us
She's very clear in what she expects from students; you deserve your grade
She tries to be intimidating and succeeds, very hard to get a good grade,Moody
Nice teacher, but very hard marker
Her toughness is legendary, but she's a great teacher
Very good in defending her interpretations. I learned a lot.
very tough, but very helpful and sweet
EXTREMELY hard grader, but I learned so much in her class!
Has favourites in the classroom and she is not afraid to show it!
Avoid her
very nice lady but carzy marekr, you do learn alot though
tough but fair; patient; learned a lot from the course
She made the course interesting. Very hard marker but very helpful
Hard marker. She's wierd, likes to talk about vampires. Has her favorites, but I learned a lot
Good teacher, helpful. Does have favorites but if you know your material she likes you!!
This lady has so much character! Her personality got me through the lectures for sure! Great with students, fun in the classroom, awesome prof! Definitely recommend her.
Very tough marker, but very helpful.
Good teaching methods, but she has her favorites and she really shows it.
She gave very good lectures and was very helpful outside of class. Very approchable. Hard marker though!
I really liked the way that she tought the course, she was interesting and obviously likes teaching. She IS a very tough marker though...but it is actually possible to do well in her class
She is a very nice lady. Wants you to do well. Does have hard tests, but keeps you on your feet.
pretty good...very nice but hard marker i think
The best prof I have ever had while attending Memorial University, witty, smart, intelligent, and helpful prof. Shes not easy with her marks, but if you want an A, she will help you get it by always offering her time and energy to you outside of class.
Her teaching skills are great but she needs to ease up on the marking. She is extremely picky on wording when it comes to the test.
Good prof. Very interesting, with a great personality. Didn't quite get through to me with the material though. If you don't want to be picked out to answer questions... don't take this class.

I liked her personality but I thought she was an extremely hard marker. I never got a mark below 70 in eng before, (i'm 3rd yr Eng) but I just barely got a 65 in her class.
She favors certain students to the point of embarrasment. She is smug and condenscending. She seems genually pleased when she gives a particularly hard test and people don't do well or finish. If you can avoid her do so!
She is an excellent prof, very helpful and funny.
i like her as a person, shed be a great advisor or mentor, however if you will find a drop in your average if you take her course. if she eased up on the marks, she would make an excelent prof
excellent teacher, made me enjoy grammer and decide to do a degree on the language side of things. hard marker but thats whats makes you better!!
She's alright, VERY hard marker...a bit snotty and stuck up, but nice to you at times...when she feels like it...wouldn't recommend
I liked this course with her. It was hard, but she did an ok job with the matterial. We were rushed at the end however. Final exam very hard. All the same, she is a very fair marker and the hard tests and low class marks are par for the Engl dept. A+
she may be a hard marker, but it is grammar. you have to be. very clear on what she wants. great person to talk to, and very helpful.
Run!!!
She is crazy! It is almost impossible to get a good mark in her class. I never got such a low mark in English in my whole life. I would not recommend her as a teacher.
She is a VERY VERY hard marker. I would not recommend her as a teacher to anyone who does not want to work really hard to get good grades
Just know your stuff and you'll be fine. Very friendly and easy-going.
a very good prof. She grades a little hard but i had harder graders. I suck in englsih, but i am passing it so if i can pass anyone can. She has a good personality
One of the very best!
The course material is a drag, but if you go to class(every class) and pay attention, you can do well. Dr. Bulgin can be tough but she's fair. I failed this course before, but got an A by working hard in her class, so I'm proof.
Hard course, but easy with her. Go to every class and pay attention to EVERY detail and you will do good. Really good personality.
Don't put yourself through it!
wow. i have never..in my whole life, felt so hated. i came outta highschool with a 90 in english. no. im failing. she is terrible. RUN AWAY.
A great prof. Hard marker, but what english prof isn't? she is fair and kind if you give her respect. Go to every class, pay attention to details, review material and you'll be fine! plus show you're interested

Iona Bulgin: feminist literature Nazi who gives bad marks for fun! RUN! This woman is IMPOSSIBLE to please.
great prof; very helpful and understanding. although she do not like lazy students but who can blame her. i dont either lol. definitly take her courses; you will not regret it. as long as you work you will get a great mark in her course. i will definitly do more courses with her.
She really is something...REally hard at marking too...
Not a bad prof. Thinks she knows her stuff almost too well at times. Set in her ways and a real picky marker. If you like learning things the hard way, then she is for you!
She is a hard marker, does not stimulate any interest in the material and is too set in her ways. This will be the first course at MUN. If you miss one class your going to be behind. her notes are good. But, she asks too much on tests. don't take her for english 2390!!!!
She is definately a hard marker, Im only a first year but of all my profs she is the best at actually explianing things and telling you what she wants. You do have to work REALLY hard though and go to every class.
AHHHHHHHHHH.....yeah I didn't like her teaching habits! Terrible. And I am in my third year and have taken my share of English courses...she doesn't really know how to explain the content very well and expects WAY TOO MUCH on her tests! Go for another Prof!!
i think she was great for engl2390. she really helps you when you go see her for help. i would take another class with her. great. i have an A in the course going in to the final so its possible to do well in her course. you just need to put a bit of effort in it!!!!!! take her engl3155!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Expects WAY TOO MUCH of first year english students....try and get another prof.!!
She's an incredibly tough marker, but she's also an excellent lecturer and a helpful, pleasant person. It's possible to do well in her courses if you are a dedicated, hard-working student who pays close attention to what she wants. Slackers beware, though!
She is interesting, but incredibly hard with marks. She expects way too much from first year students, and your opinions are not correct if they aren't the same as hers. She encourages you to open your mind, but is convinced only she herself is right. My advice..Get another prof!
Extremely hard marker, the only way to do good is to know exactly the same ideas as her which is virtually impossible!!.. my choice would be to get a new prof!
I really enjoyed the way she taught 2390. she was fair and comprehensive. however, her 3155 class was terrible! I really enjoy NL literature, but she nearly turned me against it! so overall, take her 2390 class, for it is not a writing class as such, and the grading is not so questionable!
i totally don't agree that she is unreasonable. i think that as long as you know how to properly write an essay, pay attention in class and take notes, plus put the work in- she'll give it all back. I really enjoyed her class and ended up getting an a. great prof.
i had her for all of these courses and by far she is the best prof.i think frist yr students should give her a break. if you dont know her personally before making cruel comments then your a ****. go see her before you judge her. you will be surprised! shes great! go to class and see her
Hard Marker! However, she is very good at explaining what is expected. seems to be always right about her ideas. Is an very nice lady who is very approachable. Helpful with material. Again SHE IS VERY TOUGH WITH MARKS. Was an 80% ENG student in highschool. I gets C's in her class. GO TO EVERY CLASS!
brutally hard marker but shes a great prof. i loved going to her classes but i barely scraped the b mark and now in other english courses i'm getting low a's
Horrible. Absolutly horrible. If you have her, drop her. Unless you want to conform to her views, then run. She is a very hard marker and if you do not say what she is thinking, then you are completly wrong. Hated her and hope I never have to see her face again.
Hard marker but great prof. If you do the work she will give you the marks.
she's AMAZING! She'll inspire you SOOOOOOOOOO much! if you want your degree to really mean something I suggest you take her class!! its amazing!
Dr. Bulgin is AWESOME! She is a great prof. She is great person to get to know. If you show an effort and try your best she will reward you. She is just awesome. Mun's best Prof in a long run! If you can get in her class your LUCKY!
This woman is absolutely mad.She really knows how to teach the material..I know it all so well,if only someone else could provide the test. She's impossible, she thinks a A isn't possible even a B whether you desrve it or not..I would advise you to get her class if you plan on doing it twice, with her to learn the material and the other for testing.
i like this course with Iona. she explains it quite well. she expects alot of you on exams but if you know the material you will do fine. i recommend this class to anyone. she only expects you to do your work and if you do will surely reward you with a good grade. dont listen to half the ppl here who says she's difficult. Go to her office 2 see her
Dr Bulgin is a great professor; she really tells it like it is: if you don't go to class, you won't do well! She makes dry material really interesting, and I would highly recommend her as a grammar professor.
hard marker, no matter whether you know the material or not. Thought i would enjoy this class (i did enjoy all the novels) but ended up hating it.
Dr. Bulgin is a great prof. She is very clear, she obviously really knows what she's talking about (which, unfortunately, CANNOT be said for all profs). The tests are hard but they are fair! She has a great attitude, always happy and smiling and making jokes. Very nice outside the class as well, willing to help you out if you ask.Highly recommended
This prof can be very intimidating at times! Though she seems a little tough, she is a nice person. The course is not easy but she is always there to help you in any way possible. She is always game for a joke and some laughs in class; tests are hard but fair; her marking strategies could be a little bit more "student-friendly". I recommend her!
worst prof ever, she made everyone feel as though they were 2 inches tall and even said I know people think I am a ****. She is boring and very cold to students. I attended every class and did well on exams but when it came to papers if you did not tell her her own opinion then you did terrible.
A very nice and cheerful person, however her teaching strategies are lacking... Sometimes, she can be very unclear and directionless in her lectures. You really had to fill in the blanks with her. I still did well in the class but I would have preferred more organized lessons for a subject that I love!
She's a good prof but the material is pretty hard. Alot to remember and sort out. You HAVE to go to every single class and study for all the tests. If you dont keep on top of this course you are GOING to fail. If you study and go see her with problems you'll do good. She's a good prof for this course.
This prof is mean. She likes to pick on people and make them feel bad when they don't get answers right. She seems like a woman on a power trip. Her tests are also very hard and she does not properly prepare her students for the tests.
Iona is possibly the best prof at MUN. She takes brutal material and simply beats it into your head. She keeps the class very interesting. Tests are hard but there are nos suprises. GREAT!!!
this woman somehow takes a topic as mind-numbingly boring as grammar and makes it fun. it's not an easy course and you really need to go to every class to keep up and the tests aren't easy, but if you go to her for help she'll give it to you. couldn't recommend a better prof for this course!
This prof is hard and unfair. She expects far more then anyone can give. Also she does not teach the curriculm. She brings the repuation at MUN to a new low. I am going to DAL thanks to her AWFUL gradeing and teaching abilities.
As You can see the person who rated this class and prof. very low, needs to learn how to spell..now we know why he/she failed. Marks do not come for free, you have to work very hard. She is the best prof. that I have encountered in my many years at Memorial.
She was one of the better professors I have ever had. Her tests were not hard if you studied for them, and just do a little bit of work every day (like fifteen minutes) and you will do fine. She was willing to help and she was fun. I got along so well with her, and I honestly thought like I was being taught by a friend.
She is an interesting teacher; hard marker. The first day of classes she will pick out an area in class where there are students she likes. The will do well, you will not if you are not in this area. She takes a liking to quirky, bohemian or older students. If you're none of the above, don't expect her to care about you.
Prof. Bulgin is fantastic! She is always nice and helpful when asked for extra help, and her classes are fun and interesting. She made novels that could be boring pretty interesting! Love her!
Strict and demanding but one great teacher. I liked her class very much. But make sure to be prepared for class - she will call on you eventually. That's why many cowardly English majors are affraid of her. If you work hard, you will do well. She's also good to get help from.
For a course that's so inherently boring (grammar = not fun), she does a great job of making it relevant and, at times, even a little interesting. An easy grader she's not, but a good prof she is. If you have to take this course, she's definitely the one to take it with.
Loved the course so much I am taking it again....She is awesome! Anyone who says otherwise just didnt put the effort in.
Very demanding prof, but an excellent one at that. She can seem a little intimidating but once you get to know her, Iona is a very nice (& funny) lady. You do need to study as you will NOT pass any of her exams without knowing the material. Go to class, and make sure she gets to know you. I highly recommend her, especially for a course that be dull
I don't like her at all. A nice person, but a horrible prof. She's boring and repetitive and really doesn't teach anything of value. An extremely hard marker on top of that makes it next to impossible to do well in her class unless you're one of her favourites. Which she does pick.
I'm actually really trying, and I'm just barely keeping my head above water. She appears to b clear on instructions, yet when I get my paper back with a 48% marked on it, there are only 2 small things underlined on the entire paper!! I will never take a class with this prof ever again.
Iona is a wonderful professor! Anyone who complains about taking 2390 w/ her, who thinks she is a hard marker, is simply lazy, unmotivated, and essentially useless. Yes, you MUST attend EVERY class and be VERY ATTENTIVE. Amazing and extraordinarily HELPFUL. I have an A and I'm doing Geology - ANY ENGL student SHOULD be able to do the same! - MWH =)
Apart from her marks being ridiculously unfair she also lost my exam. This woman is useless, stay far away.
Dr. Bulgin is a fantastic professor. Very dedicated; she even came in to teach when she was clearly ill. The course itself is very demanding, but if you attend the lectures as frequently as you possibly can, you shouldn't have too much difficulty. And if you ever do run into problems, go see her at her office. She is VERY helpful.
Intelligent prof, loves what she is teaching. If you enjoy the subject of the course(I LOVE grammar), then you should do fine. Bulgin appreciates enthusiam, but she does choose favorites. If you want to do well, make sure it shows and I'm sure she'd be happy to help you improve. I enjoyed taking a course with her.
I took her for 2390 and newf. Lit. She is awesome but you have to attend class! you have to go ask her stuff about the material at least once a week and examine all aspects of material given to you! She is a little uptight but she is best kind. One of my marks went from a 47 to a 71 after repeating a course so the effort counts!
(2390) Took notes & attended EVERY class & still could not obtain a passing grade from this woman. Her marking is VERY VERY STRICT, does not allow part marks- either you know it or you fail. Far too difficult for a 2000 level course!!!!!! WOULD NOT RECOMMEND unless you're a masochist who would rather study than ever eat or sleep during the term!!
She may seem intimidating at first but she really is a nice lady. She is very sweet when you go see her for help. You MUST attend every class or you will do extremely bad. If you do and you take good notes and study hard you can do well in this course, although half the people in my class are taking it for the second time. :)
Unfortunately this class in mandatory for all English students, but GET ANOTHER PROFESSOR IF YOU CAN. Not once during this semester did I ever get the feeling that Dr. Bulgin cared if her students were passing or not. Told us on the first day that she was very nasty and half of us would fail- she was right on both accounts.
BRUTAL MARKER!! She's an english Nazi. HOWEVER, if you can sacrifice a low grade take her course at least once, because I found other english courses to be a joke after being in bulgins class. I struggled to pass her 1080 class but got easy A's in other english courses.
I felt like I was chewed up and beaten with a phone book after seeing my midterm and how she graded it. Get another professor for this course unless you want to do it twice or have your head so far up her ass you can pick her brain for the answers.
Very clear and helpful. If you follow her instructions, go to class and take notes you should do just fine
Lots of people here say that if you got a low grade in this class, it's because you didn't study. However, I studied extremely hard, never missed a single class and still failed. Dr. Bulgin did not seem to care who passed or failed her class and graded the tests as if she held a grudge against you. FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR.
The people here who say that you are lazy and didn't study if you're complaining about Prof Bulgin are ridiculous. I attended every class, took detailed notes, read the textbook, and still failed. Whatever you do FIND ANOTHER PROF.
It seems as though Dr. Bulgin takes some sort of delight in failing her students. STAY FAR AWAY.
You can study your butt off in her course and still fail, granted the course itself is difficult. The prof is very unclear. Although she seems like a really nice person, she is a very unclear/frustrating professor. RUN!
She loves to fail people. I fought to just keep my head above water. It had nothing to do with "laziness". FIND ANOTHER PROF.
Love her and that course :) I NEVER went to class, still came out with a 91, went to see her a couple times and she was awesome. She might be tough at times and yes, she expects a lot. But a lot of failures in her class are due to student laziness. Work and you'll get a good grade :)
BEST prof/course combo I have ever had, hands down. Take a few notes (you can easily pick out the important stuff) and study the night before. Textbook is absolutely unnecessary. If you have any sense of what constitutes bad grammar, you are good to go; the stuff taught is simple and memorable.
I have to agree with the "loves to fail students" remarks. It was my most un-favourite class ever!!!
Professor Bulgin is terrific. (S-V-SC). She is an asset to the Memorial University English Department. Her lectures were fun. She provided the class with encouragement and support. I thoroughly enjoyed her instruction and I highly recommend her as a professor!
Great prof. Though, I admit, I did fail her course. It was my own fault that I did not put the manpower into studying as much as I should have. With that said, Bulgin was an excellent professor but tough. If you miss one thing, you miss everything! Just study ur butt off and you'll do great in her course.
Dr Bulgin is passionate about what she teches, knowledgeable, deserves a regular gig at MUN.
Amazing Prof! in order to pass the course you have to attend class , as she does not rely on a textbook and you are tested on what is covered in class. She is very helpful and approachable outside of class! it is a hard course though so GO AND TALK WITH HER!! if you are having trouble understanding!
Just finish the 3020 Course and although the material was difficult to understand at first, Bulgin kept my interest and taught me more than any other prof I've ever had! Very much willing to help if you're trying in her class and extremely pleasant to talk to. thanks for a great experience in a diffuclt course
She definitely knows what she is talking about. The way she formats her tests are extremely helpful if you want to improve your marks throughout the course. Very helpful if you do not understand something in her class and she gives practise sheets, overall tough but an excellent prof. Recomend her to anyone with respect for English
love her !! such a great prof. knowledgable and friendly. she gets to know everyone and it super helpful. her tests are straightforward and easy to prepare for. you either get it right or wrong. youll have fun in her class and its important you attend.
Iona is an outstanding professor, and has genuine respect and concern for her students. Between her fluid, direct lectures and impeccably designed tests, she makes learning the material almost impossibly easy. She is uncompromising in her expectations of students, but extremely helpful if you put in the effort any student should. Dead brilliant.
She makes grammar fun to learn and is concerned about how well her students are doing in the course! I took it as a summer course to be able to finish my first degree next year, and she makes me want to get up on a sunny day and go to school for an hour!! I would recommand this course taught by her any day! Best prof i've had in 5 yrs at MUN!
Dr. Bulgin is an amazing woman who has true compassion for her students. She is somewhat of an old-school styled professor and does not give many notes in class. She supplies countless handouts, and speaks quite fast in her lectures. If you show up to class, and apply yourself intensely, you will pass the course. She is very helpful and approachable.
An amazing prof. I would recommend her to anyone. She takes every student to heart and does everything to help students. Just study the material and know your stuff and you will do really well. She is a very fair marker and if you study the material, the tests are easy!
Dr. Bulgin is very fair and extremely friendly. She makes everything she teaches clear and easy to understand, especially for grammar, a class that one would expect to be boring and unbearable.
Dr. Bulgin is, perhaps, the greatest prof I've ever had. Attendance isn't mandatory, but is crucial to the learning of he material (as the text book is used very little). Lots of opportunity for improvement, as there are frequent tests. I liked grammar before this course, now I love it! Can't wait for the chance to do another course with her.
Amazing prof!! If you attend all her classes, ask if you have any questions or go see her and review your notes once a week you will do well. I found that she really wanted to make sure you did well. People might say that she is tough but those people prob want to be slack but still get good marks, that dont happen at mun!!
Dr. Bulgin is perhaps one of my favourite professors since coming to MUN. She is funny and makes a course like grammar seem fun and much easier than others would. I cannot wait to take another course from her. I would recommend this course taught by her to anyone (even if it isn't mandatory towards an English degree anymore).
She is the bees knees. Grammar can typically be boring but she makes it tolerable.
Great prof! Friendly and nice. The tests are a bit long but the course itself isn't bad. Take a course with her!
Bulgin really is a reasonable and helpful prof. I don't understand why she doesn't give worksheets with answer keys, or even worksheets with the exact styles of questions that will be on the tests, but pay attention, study, and go see her with any questions or uncertainties and you WILL do well. She really is a good prof.
Wonderful teacher and person! Very clear, enthusiastic, and helpful! Best teacher at MUN
This is the best prof at MUN. Even though the course is hard, Dr. Bulgin is available for help whenever you need her. You have to attend class in order to pass and make sure not to get behind in the course. There is a lot of material to cover. Don't give up if you're having trouble, go talk to her about it and she will help you.
THE hardest English course offered (IMO) but Iona is a wonderful prof. Comes across as a little intimidating but she is so approachable and ready to give you extra help.
She is hot!
