Ira seems like a nice guy in class, but his grading in impossible!! I thought I was going to get a B or at lowest a C in the class and I failed it, even after doing ALL of the work!
Bad class. Bad teacher. What else can I say?
Awesome Professor. History msjors must take him. Finding him as a teacher was like discovering the Dead Sea Scrolls. Lots of work no doubt about it. Try 20 research papers in one semester (small ones) Moonlights at NY Museum..
One of the most knowledgable men u will ever meet. His problems lie with his monotone voice, and lack of ability to transfer the information he knows as fact to his students. You will have to be perfect to get the perfect grade. However, U CAN DO IT
Uh, very smart man, very knowledgable, nice guy, but you must pay attention, not a fly by class, pay attention and you'll be fine, oh yeah do the reading too
very smart guy, hard, but smart
Talks more about his own work at the museum than teaching. Boring, impossible work load (you know we do have other classes to take), and just plain out a waste of time. Dropped his class.
Ira is nuts in a cool way. Read or die should be carved on the lengthy text he hands out. Intelligent yes, but takes for granted that for the most part, students dont have photographic memories...he is tough
just reads the chapters
teacher tells interesting stories, his lecutres could get drawn out a little.
for 16 weeks could not understand one single word he said
Good luck trying to follow this profs point during a lecture. You'll leave having written 5 pages of notes and having learned nothing. The only reason i stayed in the class was because J.R. Cassidy was teaching the second part.
Very smart man, he's very interested in his work, this is a COLLEGE class, you may actually do work, take notes, and follow along, you'll be fine, if you want an easy A, not here, but a SMART A$$ MAN!
Smart man. Hard class. Good professor though. DO NOT sit in the front and center... he is very tall, and walks but 2" from the desks. Sitting in the frint and participating will guarentee u a MUCH hight grade. Lots of homework, but a good man.
Very smart man, but soooo hard. Took him for two classes this semester and it was not a good idea. His Egypt class is impossible. Expects too much of his students, but such a nice and smart man
By far the worst professor I've ever had. needs to actually teach, not show slides of his vacations. tests were impossible - doesn't seem to like giving partial points. very smart man, but needs to stop treating undergraduate classes like masters classes
Maintains no focus, too much time wasted on stories rather than discussing relevant info. Pages and pages of notes and all you get from it is a extremely tired hand. "Did I tell you this story?" Stay Away
great professor, tough class. he is very clear on what he wants from his students- he gives you all the test questions in the syllabus! just read the books, study and go to class and you will be fine.
Painfully boring and completely unhelpful. I did not learn a damn thing in his class.
very knowledgeable and can really help you learn alot about things that you might see as really boring, he has my recomendation
His lectures/stories were very interesting however all the papers killed the lectures. All the papers that had to be done "100% perfect" took the forus off the lectures. Also if you sit in the front row the site is undesirable he is too tall to
Very intelligent but very difficult. Not even in the good way, but it feels like too much busy work. Having to hand in notes from every class or else you automatically fail but they don't actually get graded is not a pressure I need in a 100-level course
He is brilliant and difficult to understand, but as write plenty of notes and study for the tests there is nothing to worry about. I only bought one of the textbooks and still scored a B+ in his class. Plus, his lectures are very interesting.
The worst professor I've ever had. Completey uncaring, gave over 100 items to study for on the final exam for a total of about 10 questions and 2 essays, far too much material to study. 1 or 2 people passed the class and the rest failed. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Would not go far to call him the worst, but definitely one of them. Expects us to memorize everything he says. Homeworks, and a project .......... just kills you ! Too much work for a class like this.
dont take if u want to pass. guy is crazy,, over 40 assignments, 12 page paper, midterm and final are a joke, i understood all the material and got D. this guy wants everyone to KNOW everything, nothing is good enough. dont take! worst professor ever. YOU WILL NOT GET ABOVE A C!
Since we have to keep our comments clean, I can't even begin to use words that describe him! Avoid his seminar, out of a class of 8, he failed FFFF 7 of us... freakin teacher wants you too be able to read the ancient Sumerian writing to get a freakin D.. hate him hate him!!
He is the most boring professor I ever had, and he expects way too much and gives too much work. I think i fell asleep everyday in his class. He's nice and will work with you, but I wouldn't recommend taking him....
Spar is a very hard teacher. He knows a lot and I actually found his class interesting...but boring. Go to class and take notes...that is a must. If you study for the tests you will do alright. The book summaries are annoying but doable. I learned a lot in this class and somehow got an A.
He was cool. He gives you the questions to his two essay exams and goes through everything
awesome guy. He doesn't have a late/on time policy for assignments which is cool, but because of that there are no deadlines...anyway take him if he's available
He's a nice guy and very helpful but boring. Makes us read too many boring books and expects notes on each one in his "own" style. Has us memorize 10 essays for each final but we only have to answer 2 and don't know which ones he's gonna choose.
this professor is a very nice man, but if you have questions or need to get in touch with him don't expect to he doesn't answer phone calls or e-mails. his lectures are boring and there are many assignments lots of reading and writing. the books he has you read are just like his lectures BORING.
I can not stress enough, how important it is that you never take a course with this prof. He should have retired a long time ago. If you enjoy being bored and feeling like you're going to fail, then by all means go for it.
borin lecturer and gives a lot of work but is nice guy and willing to work with you if you need help
Very enthusiastic about material, lax about deadlines, just loves to have a good time. very encouraging
Oy! I will never take him again. He is the most boring professor at this college and I fell asleep on more than one occasion. He is a nice man, but cannot teach for dear life. There was not much work, but by all means, I hope no one ever has to go through him again. Oh yeah, and talk about the opera; he will get sidetracked for half the class.
He's a really nice guy, but can be a bit boring. The material was actually quite interesting. There are only three grades for the course: the midterm, final and a research paper so you have to do pretty good on them. You do have to study for the tests, but if you do and paid attention in class you should be ok.
AMAZING...take any of his classes if you can...he loves what he does and just shows pictures and tells stories...midterm, paper and final...homework is just pass fail...and only a few!!
Ira is a nice guy, but he makes you really work for what seems to be nothing since the "reading notes" have no real grade on them. The paper is a litle nutso, but generally he tries to explain things clearly. Take Ira for world civ, but i wouldn't try any other classes
Awesome professor imho. Interesting topics, lots of slides, but the reading notes were pretty ridiculous. I put them all off to the end of the semester and handed them in on final day. Midterm, final, and paper are the only three grades given for the class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He failed practically my entire class, eventhough we did all the work. His class is boring. They are even lightening his class load because he has had so many complaints.
Professor Spar's class is completely straightforward and he gives a moderate amount of work. Very intelligent man and shows alot of slides. At times can be a bit boring, but overall he knows his stuff and cares about his students' learning. Very personable and easy to approach as well. Definetely recommend taking him.
Really nice guy. Rough grader. Otherwise easy class. You sit and watch slides as he tells stories. His stories are amazing though.
i learned about his thoughts and not about actual history...he was a terrible terrible teacher and i recommend never taking his class he should not be a teacher!!!! he only tells stories and you dont learn anything except his thought which don't mean anything to the test or papers...He speaks Babylonian THATSS ALL I HAVE TO SAY END OF STORY :)
he is a horrible teacher and will fail you for any reason. He tries to force his thoughts unto you and never teaches you anything important. His tests are immpossible and there is no winning with him. Stay away from him. History is my major and i never failed it before him. WATCH OUT!
Stay away at all costs! He lectures every class about his stories, and never cites from the book so you can review. You need to learn everything from his lectures. When asked what chapter we were on he replied "I don't even know, we'll see what happens today." What?! His exams are essay format and ridiculous to study for.
Im taking Professor Spar for Ancient Law. He expects a TON of reading to be done, and you need to study A LOT for his exams. Midterm, Final, 15 page paper. Thats it. I got an A on the midterm, didn't study like, a ton, but paid attention in class. Honestly, he's tough, but not THAT tough. If you dont mind a little work, he's worth taking.
i'm taking two of his classes right now and it really isn't all that difficult. you have two tests, and a paper - that's it! and he never takes attendance. there is a lot of reading, but if you pace yourself it isn't too bad. as long as you do the readings and study hard you'd at least get a b, or b+. def not an 'easy a' teacher.
By far the worst teacher I've had at Ramapo. All he does it talk the whole entire time, and its in a sotry format, so your notes are just one big paragraph.only had a midterm and final that were graded.Boring, and not once got let out early.STAY AWAY.
Real nice guy who can sometimes be interesting. Only grades are midterm final and a project. Unfortunately theres so much reading for the exams theyre very hard to study for
World Civ. I. Difficult class. You really have to do all the readings to have a decent idea what he's talking about in class. It's also very difficult to take clear notes. I wouldn't recommend him unless you are very interested in the subject matter and you are willing to spend A LOT of time studying for an intro class.
hes a nice guy, but sooo boring. its impossible to take notes and what he talks about is rarely relevant to whats on the exam.theres 2 reading notes assignments, midterm, final, and final paper and the way he grades is so hard, so it is definitely not an easy A
Took him for an Ancient Rome class. Doesn't teach, just tells you old Roman stories. Ridiculous expectations. Worked my butt off for a C-. Cool guy, but pretty awful teacher. Will not answer emails
Ira is a nice man but his reseacrh paper for World Civ 1 is ridiculous. MUST DO ALL THE READINGS or else you will fail the tests becaus ehe expects you to cite where your information came from. Sometimes class was interesting but very rarely. attendence is mandatory in order to pass
I had Ira for World Civ, and he knows his stuff since he's an archaeologist! He is ALL lecture. You can tend to doze off sometimes. He doesn't provide any notes, so the only notes you can rely on are the ones you take. 2 long research papers, and the exams are on 3 essays out of the 11 he gives you to know. Definitely not an easy breezy course!
You basically only have 3 grades, midterm, final, and a ten page term paper. He's a really sweet guy, but not a very straight forward professor. This is a really good class for people who like history, but it's difficult and frustrating. READ THE TEXTBOOK AND YOU WILL DO WELL. I slept through his lectures, but studied the book really hard for exams
Amazing teacher! Pay attention to his lectures, take detailed notes and you'll be fine. I never read from the book didn't do any readings. Show up to every class and paid full attention! He makes it extremely interesting and has great stories! the exams and research paper are super easy if you paid attention. just a lot of writing
Ira was a good professor. The only work was a midterm, final and a final paper. The CEC was pretty important for him. The final paper is 10 pages long and you must go to the museum. He was pretty boring but very kind and had some interesting stories to tell. Kind of a tough grader when it came to the final paper. But overall was a good professor.
Do not take this class. I have respect for every one of my teachers, but not him. He is one of the hardest graders. I wrote 3 pages for one of my essays on my midterm, missed one thing and he failed me. You must know everything he knows to do well and that's extremely hard to do. Just the midterm, final, and term paper.
His lectures are extremely long and more often than not, he just talks about his life, not the subjects that are supposed to be covered for the class. Harsh grader and only gives three grades; midterm, final, and final paper. Do not take this class because you will not do well no matter how hard you work.
TERRIBLE. I don't wear my seat belt on my way to this class in hopes of crashing. This man lectures and lectures and lectures and gives zero guidelines for his rediculously long paper. He is in love with foot notes which he doesn't even want to be actual foot notes. He wants mini stories! Mini stories all over your 10 page paper. Don't take Ira.
Taught this class as a early semester replacement for Professor Padovano who was on medical leave. Professor Spar is a great storyteller who presented very interesting content which moved away from the original professor's intent however the course had no clear direction. Only one grade, a group paper totaling 30 pages.
ahhhhhh! Don't take him unless you want to work for the grade. He's extremely helpful when you go to him during his office hours. He's a very sweet man that puts aloof time into his class but if you don't want to do the work then don't be surprised when you find your self with an F.
Do not take this class. Unless you truly enjoy history and lectures this class is not for you. It is so boring with lectures every class. The papers are super long with no directions for them. He does not care that everyone fails his class. Beware because you only get 3 grades, do not take at all costs!!
this is the worst class i have ever taken. he's the worst professor at this school. he says one thing in his lectures, then next class will completely contradict everything he's said in the past. if you can avoid his class, please do. i will not be taking a class with ira again.
Do not take this class no matter what you do. I am a first-year student and taking this class hasn't made the experience very exciting. Ira is a horrible professor. He just talks about whatever comes to mind, even if it is totally unrelated to anything. He is very unhelpful and gives 0 notes. You are on your own in this class. Do not take Ira!
This was by far the worst class I have taken at Ramapo. Ira is a nice guy, but he is not a good teacher. He talks about things unrelated to class more often than not, and does not make it clear what he is teaching about. His readings are all over the place and he does not make it clear what to read. From a history major, do not take him.
Whatever you do, don't put yourself through the torture of this class. He's a very nice guy but on midterms, finals, and the final paper (the only 3 grades this man gives in the class) He wants you to read his mind. If you don't answer exactly how he wants you to you WILL fail, and doing this is extremely hard as he is very vague with his questions
Ira Spar is an incredibly inspirational professor who will challenge you to study hard and think critically about the material, and teach you an enormous amount of really interesting and memorable information. His course is difficult to get a good grade in if you do not work hard but he offers a lot of help and guidance to students who ask him.
terrible professor
As much as I want to write something nice about Ira, I cannot. He assigns hundreds of pages of reading per class which can be expected from a history course but he expects a complete understanding of the text. He is a very nice man but gives three assignments: the midterm, a term paper (which you need to go to a museum for) and a final. Very hard.
Ira has a lot of patience and he explains the topic as it is. I learn more about history from him. There are two exams which are easy if you read.
Ira is a very nice man who loves what he does. He is very knowledgeable and because of that, forgets that we don't know what he knows. He assigns a ton of reading per class which he hardly discusses in class. He gives you the midterm and final questions on the syllabus on the first day but does not tell you which will be used. Final paper is hard.
Ira assigns loads of reading, but you can skim it if you pay attention in the lectures and ask questions. You get the midterm and final questions with the syllabus, so you have time to prepare even though he doesn't specify which ones are on the tests. He tends to go on tangents but overall really smart.
Ira is quite interesting and has so many stories and ideas to share. The class was basically all lecture with a few conversations here and there. There is 3 grades, midterm, final and term paper. The final and midterm questions are given. You need to explain your answers and cite evidence. I actually enjoyed the class but it wasn't the easiest.
Ira is a very fascinating professor. The class revolved around studying the Bible, Mesopotamian literature, and Ottoman artliterature. The class is more of a History course than a humanities one. The class consists of a paper midterm and final, along with two papers. If you enjoy history and are a good writer I recommend. If not, don't take.
This is the hardest class I have taken at Ramapo. Ira, in my opinion, cannot teach and is extremely confusing when it comes to what he wants for both the midterm and final. Throughout the course, I was constantly confused and he wouldn't give us direct answers. I do not recommend this class and if you are to take it, you should read read and read.
His lectures are nearly impossible to take notes on, which makes them useless. He puts up some chapters on the system and expects you to read them by the exam date. If you can keep track of yourself and finish them on time, maybe you can take his class. Otherwise dont. DONT
Ira is an interesting man who has done many things, and loves to tell stories about his life. The course is text heavy and challenging, but he strives to teach you to make connections instead of just memorizing. Not an interactive class really, but if you've taken any art history course it isn't very hard.
Very interesting person but not a good 101 level professor. He assigns ridiculous amounts of reading material and does not talk about that material in class. You are expected to have full knowledge of hundreds of pages for the exams. You are graded on few assignments. Class sessions are useless. Wouldn't recommend taking this class.
This professor is not good at all. He is very vague with his paper instructions and will only mention it once when a paper is due. His syllabus is also very vague too and is terrible with technology. Most of his class is him just reading for a book so it is very boring. He is one of the worst professors I've had a Ramapo extremely unorganized.
Taking classes with Ira is absolute mindless boredom. He doesn't teach anything, he just tells stories about his life and throws up 45-minute youtube videos. Absolutely terrible with technology so he never posts guidelines for tests or papers. Very interesting person, but a perfect example of someone who knows a whole lot but can't teach at all.
Ira is a great and caring guy, but this course should not be taught this way, The class consisted of 2 group papers, 1 solo paper and a final term paper. He is a very picky grader. The group papers are awful because there is no organization in the class. The lectures also are pointless. Ramapo should consider making the class online or hybrid.
The worst professor in my entire college experience. He does not respond to emails and grades like you should have been researching the topic for 40 years. His lectures are impossible to stay alert through. I did not learn a thing and after spending endless hours teaching the material to myself, barely passed. He does not offer extra help.
worst professor ever, impossible to get an A. Do not take him.
This class is about the analysis of ancient history. It is extremely hard to get good grades. He doesn't give you a structured syllabus with the dates of when assignments are due. If you have no choice but to take this class, still do not take it.
Does NOT post ANYTHING on Canvas and just barely describes his assignments briefly during virtual meetings so students always have to guess what the assignment is. Then when we actually submit what we thought is what he assigned, he just adds more to the prompt out of nowhere and will give u a low grade. Should absolutely NOT be teaching at his age
If you have the opportunity to take another professor, DO IT!!!! Lectures are long and hard to get through. It's almost impossible to get good grades and you're only graded on 2-3 papers.
Ira is a nice guy, but his lectures arent helpful and his essays are easy so long as you spend more than 2 hours researching and writing. The trick is to talk about pictures and artifacts and you will be fine. However this is not a good class if its your research and analytical skills arent proficient
A brilliant and passionate professor who's extremely empathetic and invested in his students. His classes aren't for everyone as he holds his students to a high standard & you'll have to work more than you may expect, particularly for a gen-ed, but it's worth it in my opinion. Go to office hours and put in the effort and you'll do well- not easy A.
I can not stress this enough, do not take a class with him. He's a very nice man who's always available outside of class, but this will be the only way you'll do well. His lectures often go off-topic and become nonsense. He graded us on two big exams and a paper, all 3 of which have very unclear directions and are graded harshly. I learned nothing.
Ira is a very difficult professor. His syllabus is very difficult to read and his directions for the essays are confusing. Ira lectures really heavy and does not use canvas. He also is very hard to reach by email. There are no textbooks, but there are books that you have to buy to get through the essays-Please take a different professor if possible
Ira Spar is one of the most difficult professors I've ever taken. His syllabus isn't very clear - his instructions are poor and his lectures are often off topic. Prior to the final, he dropped completely out of contact from the entire class for a week and a half and didn't answer any emails about the final until the day it was due. DO NOT TAKE.
Ira does not belong at Ramapo, I think he does it for fun. I had him back in 2018. If you do not want a deep dive into history his class is not for you. If you just want to get a gen ed out of the way do not pick him. If you want to learn something and have horizons opened about the past that you would never learn without seeking it out, enlist Ira
I took him 2022 for ancient rome. Love him but I understand why some students hate his class. The only grades in the class are 3 papers. That's it. I thought he graded the papers easy since I got all As, but they are hefty papers w/ little instruction. TBF to him, some kids will watch a few youtube videos on rome and say they know more than him
He is probably the worst teacher you could ever take. He gives horrible instructions along with only grading 3 things, a final and midterm along with a paper that makes no sense. He tells you to read the book but then says everything in the book is wrong.
STAY AWAY. Save yourself the headaches and just don't take his class.
To be so honest, do not take him for any class. He is a terrible professor. He talks on and on and doesn't get to a straight point. You don't get notes, homework, or assignments. You get the midterm thrown at you with no prep and the same for the final and term paper. He doesn't care and there is no points system, he throws a letter grade on work.
Do not take him. Genuinely the worst class I have ever taken. Absolutely distraught that he still works here. No instructions, nothing is straightforward, and he is just so boring. You can't learn anything in his class and his grading makes no sense. On top of that, he doesn't explain why he gave the grade he gave. The syllabus is total crap.
1. Doesn't know how to use technology so you can't access anything. 2. Teaches like total butt. 3. You can't even take notes on him because his lectures make no sense. 4. You learn NOTHING. 5. Boring. 6. 3 total grades (midterm, final, and paper) 7. Grades heavily with no instruction or preparation. Do. Not. Take. This. Professor.
He is horrible. He gives little instruction for the 3 assignments he gives. Most of my class failed our first test and he had the nerve to say he was disappointed in our class as if it wasn't his fault he doesn't know how to teach. He also just yaps the whole class about I don't even know what so its hard to pay attention to anything or take notes.
Extremely harsh grader!
He is a knowledgeable instructor his teaching style was long, lecture-based. His delivery felt outdated and is challenging for students seeking more engagement. The class was based around three major assessments—the midterm, final paper, and final exam-there was little opportunity for grades to reflect students' progress throughout the semester.
bros past his prime, brain washes student
His syllabus is difficult to navigate and he rarely refers to it. The class is very much lecture and note-heavy, and the professor will often ramble. Your grade is determined by only five essays which he encourages that you work with a partner on. He may also expect you to attend a mandatory field trip without providing transportation.
Very nice but tough grader. Only a few papers over the course of the semester, and no midterm or final. He teaches in a lecture style, but it is easy to follow along with. Notes are crucial to passing the essays.
No assignments have been given to the class and the first one being a mid term. Every second of the class is used even if the intended points are being made, just to talk and talk and your brain gets fried. You have to remember 1 hour 40 minute lectures as well as many pages from the textbook. Rude to special education students who ask questions.
bro is cooked. He worships a stone turtle. He's alergic to a mold thats found in his garden so be ready for him to cancel class. If you enjoy hats from Uzbekistan take his class!!
Nothing good to say about this teacher. If you have him in a class, drop it before you lose your money because it's basically in the trash if you take this class. Knows that our generation/class struggles to focus (said it aloud) and proceeds to ignore requests to fix it and proceeds to go on with a lecture!!
The people on here who give him bad reviews are likely those who, 1. have zero interest in history, or 2. have the attention span of a fly. He brings a lot of firsthand experience to what he teaches and if you're interested in history, you'll enjoy his class. He only does two papers with two presentations so make sure you do good.
His lectures are long and boring. He only grades on three things and if you fail one of those, good luck. He also appoints students as unpaid TA's and do his work, like operating the computer and what not. Avoid him at all costs
he's a nice guy. very understandable with excused absences get ready to read & and memorize photos!!!!! honestly just pray to pass this class
Ira is an amazing professor, there's really no other way to explain it. I've learnt so much in his class and he always tries to answer my questions. He is available during office hours as well.
This is the best class that I have taken at ramapo. Ira is an amazing professor and has lots of first hand experiences and info. This class was taught in a discussion style, and it was very engaging. This is my 2nd class with him and I recommend.
