She is fun, sometimes she didn't explain herself; however she is a great teacher...
this teacher is great - she gives the homework during class time and gives you more then enought time to work on the assigment - also she makes you work in partners so be careful who you choose
Totally inflexible. If you do something she doesn't agree with, you'll know about it. She needed to be more willing to help students. She is easy, but is an awful person. In my opinion, she was incredibly rude. Not a bad teacher though.
I really enjoyed her class. Her lectures and interesting and you will learn a lot. For exams make sure you take good notes and read the text because that's where the questions will come from. She does provide you with a study guide so that helps a lot. Very helpful if you are unsure or confused about something.
Must come to class, there are plenty of class assignments+attendence. She gives hw assgn that require research online but don't require a lot of time. One group project with presentation is 50 points. Study guide for all tests. tests are simple from class notes and text but she will let u know exactly where to look in textbook. Fun class
She is really nice. Three tests and one group project. The tests are on the computer and really easy. She provides a study guide a week before so as long as you study you will do fine. You are only allowed to miss class twice before is starts affecting your grade. She is very knowledgeable and very nice. I would recommend taking her class.
Very nice professor who cares a lot about her students. She is knowledgeable of the material. Super nice and understanding. Highly recommend her for any classes she is teaching!
I'm not sure if she was having a bad semester, but she was completely unorganized. About 90% of my class would agree. However if you do decide to take her, be prepared to study study study and keep your schedule clear for her office hours. There will be no clarity to her lectures unless you talk to her one on one.
Had her for 123 & 35F. Sure, she can be nice but she is strict & a hard grader. attendance is absolutely mandatory. I felt like 35f was FAR to much work for a 2 unit class on top of the 40 hours of fieldwork u have to do,not to mention the $130 book u HAVE to buy and hardly use. 123 was a boring class, not too much work. Not horrible, but not great
Teacher makes a simple subject, HARD. 3 papers, 2 exams, and 3 hw assign's. Takes attendence. Learned quite a bit from her. Also had CHDV 35F with her, wah-wah. Be prepared to do a lot of work.
I had her for chdv 123 and 35f and she isn't a hard teacher. 123: The tests are very easy. Read the sections she tells you to in the study guide and you will be fine. I got all the points on both tests. There are 3 papers that take work, but easy. Follow directions. 35f: Waste of time and barely used the book.
Worst teacher ever!!! Do not take her, she is super egotistical and just likes to hear herself talk. Makes classes way more work than they need to be and thinks ur life should revolve around her class. Hate her!
I am taking CHDV 132 with Professor Bersola right now and I can't even believe she is a professor. I am a straight A student and cannot stand her! Her assn. are pointless and very vague. I have gone above and beyond for every assn. and she won't give me full credit. She doesn't even know APA style, but expects everything to be in APA. I HATE HER!
Her lectures are practical and fun. She responds to emails and posts grades/important announcements in a timely manner. She's friendly if you have questions. Some of her assignments are "busy work", I'll admit. But it's still important experience and knowledge about working with children. She's awesome, and I'd love to have her again.
Professor Bersola-Nguyen is a terrific lecturer; class discussion is always enjoyable and interesting to learn because she engaged by asking the students what they think about certain topics. I don't know why others are saying that they hate her because she is great at teaching CHDV 131. Assignments, quizzes, and two midterms! Take her!
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! Yes the material is easy, but it's a ton of busy work on top of ur 40 hrs! She makes you buy her book which basically isn't even her writing, its just articles written by other people. the worst part is that you can't even sell it back! that's how she makes her money. The book is even more expensive than the class textbook!
This class has a lot of work and the book is a little confusing, but she is super helpful and always available at office hours. She is fun and lively and likes to sing to the class. I would take another class with her any day.
She's very into the subject. She's a nice, sweet professor. Pretty simple class. Get your hours done and you'll pass. Super handy taking this class while taking CHDV 35. So many of the things she talked about overlapped with my CHDV 35 class. Made things click a bit better.
This teacher knows her subject, but her teaching style is very hard to learn from. Seriously, the lectures and class was so pointless, I learned nothing from being in class. Time would have been way better spent being at the site all week rather than sitting in her classroom doing her busy work.
Dr. Bersola-Nguyen is a wonderful instructor! She is very knowledgable about the information she teaches, and she ask open-ended questions that really provoke thought. Outside of the classroom, she only continues to be very helpful!
Attendance is mandatory. She takes away 50 points per absence. There's a quizzes every single week. Her class is so boring. She docks points for the tiniest things
Although she is strict with the work, she is very helpful and enjoys teaching the class. Just pay attention and you'll be fine. And don't procrastinate. You're in college - Stop looking for class to slack in. This is the whole point you're going to school.
Great teacher. I was stressing out about her class because I wouldn't get great grades on exams, but as long as you go to ALL the classes and do all observations (which are really easy) you will pass for sure. I ended up getting an A! Textbook is highly used and she responds to emails quick. VERY friendly teacher!
Didn't really like this professor! Attendance is mandatory or else she will take away 50 points. She takes points off for the smallest things which is stressful because you never know what your grade will be. if you can stay away from her!
Being in class is pointless. It is just busy work. You take short, easy quizzes on line each week. Being at the site is fun. It is 40 hrs and a project that you present to the class.
Her class was pointless and consisted of constant busy work from which I learned nothing. The topics she goes over are inconsistent. She seems very rude and egotistical. Overall the work was pretty easy but no matter how hard I work I never recieve full credit. I would not take her again.
She takes attendance everyday. I feel like I am in high school with this class, all we did in class is have a class dicussion but when the test comes along its very difficult you basically have to teach yourself everything. She does allow open book but the test are really hard. Stay away!!
She is a super sweet woman! She gives a lot of work, but is very knowledgeable. She is very anal with APA style, but other than that she is an awesome teacher! Just make sure you attend every class!
She's easy enough once you figure out what on earth it is that she wants. Sometimes, it feels like she withholds vital information about assignments on purpose. Ask questions if you don't understand something, don't use your phone in class, show up, and you will pass. She tends to lose students' assignments, so stay on top of everything with her.
the lectures were pointless. I would literally not go to class but almost half your grade is based on attendance. Literally did not learn a single thing in this class, but doing the busy work assignments and putting them in your 'binder' was fine and class is easy. a few papers that require observations of children were large parts of class.
One of the easiest classes I have taken. She likes to crack jokes that students awkwardly laugh at. The majority of the class is the fieldwork, so basically do your hours and the small assignments that are related to your fieldwork and go to class and you will pass. You will get a list of places to go for fw, but up to you to contact the location
Wanna make an easy class hard to pass? Choose her. SHE EVEN TOLD US SHE DOESNT LIKE GIVING OUT A's! I'M AN A STUDENT! The topics in this class could have been completed in half the semester, but she dragged things on for weeks. Her study guides suck and her instructions are vague. This class would've been fun, but she sucked the life out of it.
DON'T CHOOSE HER!! Tough grader, loves to dock points. SPECIFICALLY TOLD US SHE DOESNT LIKE GIVING OUT A's. My grade went from an A to a B bc I missed one assignment. This class did not need to be held every single week. The only assignments that were important were the quizzes and the main project, everything else was a waste of everyone's time.
She was nice and helpful. A little funny too LOL
I had her for 123 and 133. You MUST go to class. No cell phones. You have to ask a lot of questions in order to understand assignments, since she doesn't really explain things, but once you figure her out, it's not so bad. Not always very clear. She's a pretty fair grader and you get study guides for the midterm and final. A bit disorganized.
Great teacher, really wants students to pass and I can say this because I had an issue in beginning of class and she accepted my late assignments. Attendance is mandatory, really easy quizes every week which she lets you take twice and gives you higher score. You will always have hw but its very easy. Book was hardly used but needed for quiz.
Make sure you attend class, she gives an insane amount of participation points that can make or break your grade. She takes attendance every class and if you leave early you will get penalized. She is a tough grader, stay on top of your assignments and take advantage of her extra credit opportunity.
I got an A in 123 and a B in 133. As in B I mean a percentage of 89.8! Went to every class, turned in every assignment, sat in front and participated. We had a good relationship, I was really surpriseddisappointed that she did not bump me up to an A. Super tough grader, pay attention to APA. Study for the two tests. Textbooks are used for quizzes.
I dreaded going to class everyday, but I knew I had to in order to pass and get participation and attendance points. This class nearly put me to sleep everyday and she would consistently let us out late which really irritated me. I would not recommend.
Her directions for assignments are very unclear. She is also a pretty harsh grader. Tests are impossibly hard, but luckily you can still get an A in the class even if you get C's or D's on the tests. I disliked her class so much that I tried to change up my whole schedule this semester to avoid taking her again.
I would definitely take her class again. Her test have study guides and she emphasizes what is important in her lectures by repeating them or summarizing. There was a research paper but she goes over it step by step making it really easy. She offers extra credit, if you are willing to do it.
She was really unprofessional and forwarded an email to my site supervisor that was supposed to be private. She's very unclear and her lectures are incredibly boring. I got 100% on all of her assignments but got a D in the class because I didn't go to lectures. She tried to controlchange my project. Was harsh and impatient. Would not recommend.
She was extremely helpful throughout the semester. Her tests are so hard, I'm pretty sure I failed the last one but still managed to get an A- in her class because participation is a must and the research paper is important too. Sit in the front of class, show up everyday, and work on the research paper and you'll pass.
I took Irene and literally hated her class so much that the next semester I needed a class she taught, I did everything in my power to set my schedule up to take the class with a different professor! Her directions are very confusing and asking for clarification really does not help. You can do poorly on tests but still pass her class, though.
Clear expectations. Don't miss class. She is not flexible.
She'll come off as a cool, laid back, chill, kind of professor in the beginning of the semester, but don't be fooled, she is very picky about almost everything in the class and she can be annoying after awhile. This class is easy and can be fun, but she just makes things more complicated than what they are when the semester gets rolling. Trust me.
Had her for CHDV 132. She is a good Professor attending class is kind of pointless because you review the material read for the quizzes but she does in class assignments and takes role so don't miss class. i really enjoyed doing my service learning hours for this class.
She's not as bad as people say. Very strict on attendance and nit-picky on everything. Can be rude, but she means well and expects excellence from students. Easy weekly quizzes based on readings. As long as you follow what she says she'll like you. Best part of class is doing service hours. Journals, project and paper to do for service cite.
Attendance is essential to passing, do not skip! Not hard, but high expectations on students and very picky about assignments. Weekly quizzes based on readings, 2 tests and 4 part paper. Quiz questions are test questions. Not great at answering lecture questions and makes APA format confusing. Study guides for tests. Easy, but must do work.

Very unclear. She uses blackboard collaborate and it ALWAYS has technical difficulties. Her exams are hard but she allows 1 side page of notes. She is a nice professor but not a great one. I know that's mean but I felt like she was not prepared for the lectures & wasted time talking about what was in the week folders instead of actually teaching.
Irene is probably the most un-inspiring, un-supportive, and at times condescending professor I have ever had. You'll feel as though all of the effort you put into the class isn't enough for her. If you approach her with questions or concerns she's short and acts like you're an inconvenience. Extremely nit-picky and likes to micromanage students.
I felt as though she wasn't understanding at times and each time I spoke with her, it seemed as though she was annoyed. Overall, the class was okay and she made class interesting. I didn't enjoy presenting in class though.
Irene lacks organization. She often confuses students and when asked to clarify, repeats the same thing that confused everybody. Due dates were often being moved around and many times only half the students showed up with the hw because of the miscommunication. Make sure to keep her on check with inputting grades. Her tests are brutal! Study a lot!
My only issue with this professor is her scheduling. Listed on our student centers, it says we would only be meeting a few Mondays out of the semester. Because of this, I scheduled another class on Wednesdays. Apparently, she expects us to have that time open, even though its not listed on the student center. This was extremely inconvenient.
She's not understanding at all. Her class is laid out poorly and incoherently.
Not flexible and extreme expectations. Her class would be doable if it was the only one or one of two I was taking. She is so picky.
Very rude, disrespectful, and never answers questions. She only says refer to the syllabus.. Late work is automatically a C or lower. Never excuses absences. Journals and weekly quizzes are very easy. A lot of group discussions and grading but she is a strict grader and never know what she really wants from students on assignments.
My 133 class with Irene is almost finished, and while I got an A with her in 123. I'm barely passing 133. She didn't explain a lot of her expectations well enough for me to produce what she was asking for. She intermixes terms and definitions in the quizzes and exams which lead to mistakes and confusion. I feel so cheated.
This class was half online and u only meet her in class on certain days. The whole class was base on a group project so homework, papers, presentation u are going to work with ur group which is hard due to the fact that its mostly online. She is also unorganize. U and your group have to help each other because she is not very helpful.
Our class was hybrid, we only met face to face a number of times. Weekly assignments and quizzes based off reading. Big group project with an essay and presentation. She lost a few of my assignments, and since it was online I had to go to her office hours to find them for her on her computer. On top of that she isn't very clear with assignments.
I did learn a lot, but I did feel as if I learned it on my own time. She is a repetitive professor, and I felt like I gained no new knowledge during class time. Come to class! It is MANDATORY to receive a good grade. She takes attendance twice on her long classes at the beginning and after the break. However, she makes her expectations very clear.
She put in a lot of work to arrange all of the fieldwork sites both before and during the semester. She is a little rough around the edges, but she gets the job done. Just show up to class, be involved in discussions about the theorists, do the group work well, and do a good job at your fieldwork site. You'll be fine.
Way too much group work. Professor was also unclear about a lot of assignments. She was also very condescending and talked to us like we're children. Overall, not the worst professor I've had, but the worst child development professor I've had in my opinion. Avoid if you can.
I agree a lot with the person below. She's okay. Not very clear at all and too much work for the amount of fieldwork you have. Her peer-evaluating is totally bogus. She takes forever to talk about the same pointless things class after class after class. But the working with kids is super fun!
So disorganized, assignments in random folders on blackboard, hard to tell what's due when because there's no clear system. The amount of assignments due within a time period is likewise unmanageable if you want to pass your other classes. Disorganized, unclear instructions, tough grader, overly time consuming.
She is all over the place when it comes to assignments and wasn't much help. The class was meant for fieldwork and when we should be focusing on the fieldwork and projects, she would try to give unimportant lessons and expect us to take quizzes before the lesson.
Okay so contrary to the reviews below, she is a good professor. Yes, participation is mandatory, but this is college so honestly we should be in class anyways. My only complaint is shes very picky and inconsistent with her grading. She always seems to find a reason to deduct even .05 of a point.
Do not take this professor. She makes you read then come to class and literally read aloud what you read. The lectures are repetitive and dumb. Coming to class is worth like 10 points a day. She makes you email everything. If you go to the doctor keep all your records that way when she acts like she never saw it you have it
LOVE her!!! Awesome professor! Too bad I can't have her as my advisor. She really cares for her students and makes an effort to get to know them. I had her for CHDV 132 last semester and I still go to her for advice. The things I learned in her class are things that I can apply to real life. Loved my fieldwork experience too!
This is the third class I've had with Professor Irene. I had her for CHDV 30, 133, and now 132. She was the reason I changed my major from Criminal Justice. I really enjoy her teaching style. She's caring and makes everything so applicable. I'm graduating this semester!!! I'm really glad I've had her as my professor.
This is the second course that I have had with Professor. Bersola- Nguyen. She is a caring professor and you take a lot away from her courses. She is very accessible outside of class and offers great suggestions if you are willing to ask.
This is the second class Ive taken with the professor so I knew kind of her style of teaching. She really is focused on class attendance and of weekly quizzes. She has been pretty good about grading and class structure as far as I'm aware.
She is truly an amazing and caring professor. I have learned a lot in her class, and would take her again in a heart beat. Dont use your phone in class! She gives lots of in class work that can help or hurt your grade, so attend class, and show her respect, she will do the same for you.
Takes attendance every day. Show up, take the quizzes/exams, and do your parts for the Group Projects. You will need the textbook for the online quizzes & exams. Lecture/information heavy. Irene is nice and makes all criteria clear to understand. Shes Filipino and talks a lot about her culture.
She's honestly a great professor, just very by-the-book, but I respect that. Her lectures are super clear and organized and she's very nice. Barely passed with an A, but that was my fault. Only difficult things were some quizzes and the final project.
This is an easy class to pass! She is fairly easy and is a solid choice. I recommend taking her. She is a bit annoying with group projects and having to use the McGraw-Hill connect thing. However, it's not terrible. She makes the class a little too much work for it being CHDV 30, but just do all the assignments/show up and you'll pass no problem.
Overall a wonderful professor if you're not in your first year. If I had taken this as a freshman I would've been overwhelmed like most of my classmates. You have to make an effort, and if you talk with her outside of class she's very helpful.
Material is easy and she's nice. Class is mandatory. Lots of group work and there's online quizzes/exams. There's been a couple times where there's errors on quizzes and the exams but she fixes them. I wouldn't take her again. It's an easy A but I feel the class is too disorganized.
She was very understanding, especially during this transition to online learning. There's weekly readings and quizzes that pertain to the lectures. She encourages class participation and really tries to involve the whole class. Not going to lie, the midterm and final was pretty hard for me. Many of the questions were on the quizzes, so remember it.
I had professor Irene for Fall 2019 and I enjoyed taking the class with her. You do have to work for your grade but as long as stay on top of all your readings then you can pass with a good grade. I would definitely take her class again & would recommend her! She is understanding and pushes her students to reach their potential.
I mean her class is not that hard but she has no mercy when grading discussions, etc.. No matter how hard I try, my grades on discussions weren't so great. She was kind enough to excuse us from taking the second exam so thank goodness.
The class is not necessarily hard, but you really have to work for the grade. Weekly discussions which have to be 150 words or more and you have to comment on other peoples post and there are weekly quizzes. The discussion are graded kind of harder. There is a big group project that is worked on throughout the semester.
I recommend taking this course with her! She is nice and explains the work properly and makes sure all the students understand. There was a good amount of work for the class but it was all helpful work that allows the students to learn about different careers. We have one to two assignments due each week and one big group project.
We have a group assignment but no presentations. You do have to go to class bc we usually have in class assignments. She has two assignments each week 1 of the assignments is due before class starts and 2 is due the following day. Overall, her class was pretty easy she provides examples for most assignments, so you know what she expects.
This teacher will put your work on the projector without covering up names. She is an easy professor; however, she has a lot of particular guidelines she wants followed, or you will not pass. Beware, she likes to give homework and projects due on significant holidays.
The professor is over all really nice but sometimes there is a lack of understanding for her students. The class is very simple: complete 40 hours of fieldwork, quizzes on the online book (free), journals, time log, and your attendance is really important and your grade will drop if you dont go.
Prof Bersola-Nguyen seems nice however I do not recommend taking her. Chad101 is one of the most basic courses and could potentially be a very fun and eye-opening course however it has been quite stressful for me and is my lowest grade. She is also a very very tough grader. The class is not super difficult but she makes it harder than it should be.
Very very nice professor, she's engaging and clearly cares about child development and teaching. The class content is pretty straightforward, but she does love group work. She can be unclear when giving feedback and grades, like she'll give a bad grade and wont really say why or how to improve. Very easy to pass her class tho
Very nice professor, she clearly cares about her students and child development. She can be a confusing grader, like she'll give half credit but wont say why or what could've been done better. She also lovesss group work, in and out of class, which can be irritating. Its an easy class to pass though, not too much homework.
There was 1 group project that was done throughout the semester. You had a textbook but none of the work correlated to it so it was a waste of money. Harsh grader and confusing assignment instructions. I missed one class due to being sick and it dropped my grade from an A to a C. Very hard to bring grade up if you miss points on assignments.
Mid-semester I missed 2 classes for emergency open heart surgery. She denied me an opportunity to make up missed class points OR to turn in my homework remotely because I was unable to turn it in in-person on time despite my clear communication. I got 95%+ on every single other assignment and still ended the class with a C. She had no compassion.
She is a tough grader, sometimes feeling like its because the formatting she gave was wrong.
Had replacement assignments for the fieldwork (4 hours each)she returned every one saying they were wrong yet compared to other classmates were almost identical. Revised 3+ times I received an incomplete for the class. I got told I didn't revise them when I showed clear proof. She took 3 months after the semester ended to give me an A grade.
Inflexible and unempathetic professor, shows little regard for students' lives outside of class, even in emergencies. Enforces a policy SHE wrote herself and MUST follow without exception, though it clearly disadvantages students. Class is based on one group project, so others' mistakes can impact your grade. For a 2 unit class, she did too much.
More than half of my section of this class did not pass.
