I don't recommend her class. Her lecture was boring. Most of her lecture were video. Exams were hard.

This is the most egocentrical professor I've ever had. the fact that she is a Doctor does not give her de right to humiliate students. Art Is about prespective, in her class Art is whatever Ms. Soriano says or should I say "Dr. Soriano"
She is difficult. If you fail to do the work that is assigned, you will receive a failing grade. She is a Professor that knows her material and is not affraid to express it. She is an excellent professor. Tough but good.
She was very difficult and she stands there and sweats. She also has very stupid rules and sets us in class by alphabetical order. Don't take her class.

When asked challenging questions, she ignored me by saying that "we were not covering that at the moment, so i'm not answering that". So much for DR.Soriano! Her class levels to a kindergarten class.
She is not organized in the topics, and jumps from one thing to other things giving students an unclear understanding on the lecture.
The class is very tough, yes. Material is very hard to understand, I agree. Let me tell u my secret to getting an A. PARTICIPATE. TALK TALK TALK. She's not bad like they say. She just likes students to work hard and not come to class unprepared. Do all of the reading.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. She is the WORST teacher I have EVER had. She is not organized we read out of a book that was published some 43 years ago, she gets mad when someone is late and makes you sit in a particular order. She thinks that you need to have 3 hours of homework each week. The WORST...
Irene is a dedicated professor who you will learn alot from but she is more difficult in World Humanities than Latin (Mexico) class. You will get at least the grade you think you deserve. She is professional , a fair grader, and strict. You will learn alot.
her classes are extremely boring, but they are easy. she gives enough of extra credit. it is easy to get an A with her. you dont really need to buy the book. you need to talk a little bit in the class and take notes from the videos
Vey excellent teacher, though she can be a bit overwhelming with homework, I really enjoyed her lectures. You need to do a lot of reading and ask questions. I truly enjoyed her class.

her class was pretty easy, i got an A for her class, i recommend student's from watever college take her, she is very cute and charming, most of her test was pretty much it easy, remember to buy the text book it's very helpful for the exam, and if you need additional help in any topics, remember to ask her for help she is the most wonderful teacher
I'm taking this class over the intersession (a four week class)...if you have the opportunity to take this shortened class, i would definitely do that - personally, i couldn't stand this lady for over 4 weeks. not only that, but the class is easy - i guess in a semester she does some project. not the case with the 4 wk class. exams-easy.
Good and not good teacher
I only lasted three weeks in the class before I RAN away. I'm an adult, PAYING for this class-- what right does this lady have to talk to her students like they're children? She wasted FAR too much time on telling us where to sit and how to take notes-- after 3 weeks, we still hadn't covered any actual course material.
It's true there are alot of notes, a strict seating assignment, tons of handouts, & political rantings but overall I felt like I learned alot. Ms. Soriano kinda grows on ya after a while. She's knows her stuff. Hang in there & youll learn alot.

Dr. S is a hard teacher but this is the kind of teaching that will be done at Unversity levels whichs makes it refreshing - hindsight. The seating chart is dumb but it's for a memory technique that shes trying to help you out with b/c class is challenging. Don't take her comments personal - if so stand up 4 urself. Got an A and learned a lot.
her tests are easy, study her quizzes, lecture notes, and participate, and youll do fine. she tries to keep it interesting, but you still need to hang in there. good teacher but requires some effort to get an A
she goes off tangents and your opinon doesnt matter to her, she likes to make everyone feel stupid, make sure to buy a milion scantrons, she treats you like your still in middle school, your not allowed to drink or eat in her class, it doesnt seem like shes all there...yeah...horrible waste of time...
I think ,she is one of the best teacher in sac.she want you to learn the materials and understand.In order to get a good grade you have to follow her instructions.Her exam is easy.
Professor Soriano is one of the best teachers at SAC. She requires you to complete quizzes online but they are the same questions on her tests. She offers extra credit work and makes herself available for if you need extra assistance. She truly wants everyone to get an A. I highly recommend Professor Soriano if you need to take Art 100.
Very easy professor, not much homework, learn many interesting things, a little bit picky but still shes good.
Prof. Soriano is one of the smartest and talented people I have ever met. I was grateful to have her as my professor she makes me proud to have latina professors like her!
How disappointing! Instead of assuming that no one in class understands English, she should have assumed students are capable. She shouldn't ask students to answer unrelated trivia. She should talk less about her Ph.D. and focus more on what students can expect to learn, not flaunt her own intellect. Her poor first impression influenced me to drop.

I had heard she was a mean and hard teacher, which she wasn't. I ended up really liking her. All the work she gives is fair. If I had to take another art class I would take it with her again.

Her opionin is the only one thats valid.She treats the class as if we are all 5th graders and she corrects you on EVERYTHING you do. I'm glad the semester is over. She is moody, puts you down in fron of everyone in class, picky about the seating chart, and overall horrible. I do not recommend the class. You will have a horrible semester.

She is a horrible instructor. I dropped the class right after the first meeting. She gives you like 7 chapters to read every week and makes you take quiz and she "forces" you to go visit some museum in LA, in order get that grade which is 20% worth but you can't expect those who live far from LA and don't a ride and works to go there for grade.
She is obsessed with the seat chart, and yes she makes you sit where she wants you too in alphabetical order. She doesn't lecture just puts videos in that are like 100 years old. If you try to make a point she makes sure she is right no matter what. I highly do NOT recommend her!!
Terrible professor. Very patronizing and condescending. Not very clear or organized when she talks. Particular about details that don't matter like making us sit in alphabetical order in every other chair.

Shes not that bad! Her work is easy its not rocket science. You will have HW every day and expect a short quiz everyday on your homework questions. Test are easy if you keep up with HW. Museums are San Juan Capistrano and Bowers you can just not go and sort of BS your essay and still get a decent grade. Im sort of lazy but I got an A. its college!
6 words: I AM LOST IN THIS CLASS!!! This class feels more like a philosophy class than an art class and everything that we've done so far has had nothing to do with art history. She makes us do assignments each day that you would expect to do in 1st grade, feels like a waste of time :(

The work was super easy. All her exams were based off of practice quizzes from the textbook & CD. Her lecture was based off of "popcorn" reading, with each person reading 1 sentence at a time. If your pronunciation is off she picks on you til you get it right, especially those that have a difficult time speaking English. Easy work but torture.
Really a one of the worst kinds of professor. Grueling to listen to; she can't help it but her voice is just absolutely grating. She is also very condescending and droll. Easy A. Do the online quizes (not "essay questions") and the personal commentaries.The other stuff will not really matter. Study quizes & images she dictates for the tests and you will do well. No need to read. The quizes have what you need to know. She is very rude&on a power trip. Follow instructions carefully.She makes it seem harder than it is!
I thought she was a great teacher! The issue everyone seemed to have with her is that she actually assigned work. Its not her fault that some people going to community colleges expect to get by on no work and no reading. I learned a ton from this class, it was hard work but worth it. Some times she was a little kooky,but so are all art majors.
Easiest class ever once you understand the way she teaches. Do as she says, follow directions and its a guaranteed A+. She is extremely anal about directions, she wants them EXACTLY done as she says. Tests consist of memorizing 10 pieces of artwork ( artist name and artwork name )the rest are multiple choice that she provides the answers to online
Just got back from the first meeting and OMG, I should of checked her rating first because she is horrible. Shes always right no matter if your correct, has a alphabetical seating chart, gives ton of homework/reading assignments, shes condescending, and rambles on about pointless topics just to keep you there longer. It is so hard to sit there and just listen to her ramble on, and pick on people for the dumbest reasons. You are not allowed to use the restroom during class, and you have a seating chart. It just feels like highschool and is very boring. I couldn't take it anymore and dropped the second week. And school is my top priority.

Sure she seems extremely harsh &demanding but in the end it's not so bad.Many people did end up dropping ,but they where the students that acted as if there where still in high school. This was one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. She doesn't give much homework at all; it's just required that you prepare well for her exams. Her 3 tests are based off of a website, with additional book information. She's knowledgeable, but she can be a little too much when it comes to lectures. Don't be late to class either.

She is VERY particular when it comes to assignments and seating arrangements. She doesn't lecture at all in class, and usually goes off on random unrelated tangents. Usually, we watch videos for the majority of class. Don't learn much about the material, but if you read the text (time consuming), you will succeed in this class.
Irene Soriano is not a good instructor and seriously do not take her if you can help it!!!! Gives out so many papers that i feel bad for the trees. Very condescending, always right, lectures are pointless. She is an example of what not to do. Listen o everyones advice and do not take her.

Literally the worst! She expects you to keep TWO copies of every single thing you do in her class and grades your notebook like a 5th grader. If you read, her tests are mind numbingly easy but putting up with her voice and general demeanor is the worst. She makes you stay after and explain if you're late and knocks off points for it. When you enter her class expect to be treated like a 5yr old. You are to keep YOUR binder a certain way. Don't do it her way and she will deduct points from your overall grade. DO the practice test online they are helpful. Try not to have too much of an opinion she wont like it. TRUST ME. Only take her if you desperately have to.
I wish i saw these reviews before i took her class. She hands out alot of papers, alot of questions for homework which is part of your test too. Expects you to turn in a personal commentary and a internet assignment for every class meet and on top of that you have to make two copies of each, one you turn in and one you keep. Boring class not fun.
She is not the most interesting professor out there. However, it is an easy A if you complete everything you are assigned to do. You will be tested on what you read from the books. She also asks you to go on multiple field trips on your own. i would not recommend her, due to her teaching style, but she is an easy A.
She is a must for any art major but try not to take her. She gives endless busy work that doesn't help. The extra credit is nice, but her classes suck. She lectures about stuff unrelated to the subject for an hour then plays movies for 2 hrs. God forbid you ask her a simple question she'll make you feel stupid and wont answer it in the end. SENILE!

DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER. Goes off on tangents all of class time, and makes you take mandatory notes on her rants. We talked about dinosaurs, slavery, and little red riding hood. Frustrating class and very unnecessary.
Mrs. Soriano is a good teacher in the sense that she knows what she is talking about and teaching to her students. On the contrary, she lacks patience with students who need more this quality and may seem as if she even talks down to her students. I would not take another class.
Tough class but I learned SO much about myself and my ancestry. Lots of handouts, lots of talking. She's a tough lady and at the moment I kinda hated the class but looking back on it I'm glad I took it. Field trips were fun.
At first impression one would consider her a tough unreasonable professor. Tough from inintent to teach not only the class but how to succeed in a stream of further education. She seems harder than she really is. Communicate with her after class. You will be able to express your frustrations, she will help you resolve your concerns about the class
I don't agree with most of these reviews. All she wants is for you to show up to class on time and do your work. Her lectures are more videos than I would prefer but she does tell you exactly what will be on her tests. The only way to fail this class is if you don't show up or dont know how to follow directions.
This class was mind-numbingly easy. She expects you to function at a college level, which many students tend to lack. Many people came unprepared to class without proper materials and didn't read notes so she spent most class speaking by herself because no one can engage. Easy A if you don't what you're told! I got a 98% without trying.
Overall, this class is not hard. She does assign a lot of work and reading, but it is not difficult. She is passionate on the subject. She is not a tough grader on the content itself, but will also not tolerate work not done 100%.
I'd recommend taking this class at another college just to avoid this professor. Everything about her curriculum is unclear and I promise you will leave her class having not learned anything. She goes off on unrelated tangents and she forgets what she has actually taught you and tests you on things you didn't learn. I had to teach myself.
This class is easy, if you follow instruction. She seems hard at first, but it took time to adjust to her teaching style. If you adapt to her teaching and just listen to her, it'll be easy, breezy. She's very knowledgeable and know her art history!

The class was highly interesting due to the lectures, and readings. Although, she lacks patience with her students, and truly belittles you for asking a question. This is the reason as to why students don't interact because they are afraid to ask any questions. Homework assignments are fairly simple, and tests are always reviewed beforehand.
The class overall was easy to pass. A lot of the students writing bad reviews simply don't know how to follow directions. Dr. Soriano was definitely strict in the sense she wants you to pay attention and be on time. Assignments were easy to do and tests were all multiple choice.
Dr. Soriano is a great teacher. She is old school in matters of teaching but if you take notes and listen you will learn. I took this class in the Spring '18. Get ready to write in her class, participation is a must, she offers many chances for extra credit so there's no way you can F the class unless you just don't try.

Dr. Soriano expects her students to be at a College Level. She is very clear with her expectations. You will likely fail if you expect to not show up or do the work. If you follow her instructions, it will be an easy A.
Irene Soriano is a great professor! I enjoyed having her as my professor. Very easy to pass the class. Lots of people like to complain about her and blame her for there grades. There is lots of homework given all at once, but it's manageable. Doing ALL homeworkpassing the class. Space out your work for her class daily and it's an easy A.
I took her class a long time ago at UTEP. As long as you show up and put in a little effort you'll be fine. I remember she would offer extra credit assignments if they were needed.

I took this class a couple years ago, but she is still to this day the worst teacher I've ever taken. The homework assignments were easy, though boring, and the tests were an easy pass, but she was rude and condescending. She would belittle students for asking questions and her lectures were beyond boring. I hated attending her class.
Took till week five to learn anything of the expected course material. If you want to actually learn anything, take another professor. Shes more concerned about organization standards and keeping students busy. Homework is tedious and boring, but overall manageable. Lecture is uncomfortable due to her style and mannerisms. Extremely condescending.
Avoid this professor. She talks over students during lecture, doesn't listen to anyone, and is just terribly condescending and demeaning in general. This is the worst professor I've ever dealt with, in terms of both personality and class management. Don't get stuck in her class if you need the requirement to graduate you'll regret it!
She has no academic set up every lecture is from the top of her head for 3 hours or however long the class is. She does not know how to use technology expect the VERY basic elementary knowledge. She gives you about 30+ papers every class meeting that you will never touch again. Theres so much more to say and little space left so just avoid her.
She reads the chapters word for word. Doesnt discuss the readings. Wont post grades even after you have submitted many assignments already so you wont know what your grade is until she decides to post them. Doesnt really interact with the class but take roll and read chapters word for word every class. Then class is over. Hard to learn.
Calls roll at beginning/end of class, lectures were just youtube videos and documentaries. DON'T ask her questions, she is very abrasive and doesn't even answer, just yells about you not reading the instructions carefully enough. Classwork is easy though, weekly discussion board, and only 2 papers, follow the instructions. Tests are kind of hard.

Horrible. She goes on about non-related topics. She tries so hard philosophical for no reason. She is so big on grammar and spelling. She locks the option to edit, or erase post, so if you make a mistake, you can't go back and fix it. To be honest, assignments are easy, but as soon as their is a misspelling, she removes points, post are 2 points.
She spent all of the three-hour classes either reading something word for word or showing us YouTube videos. Also, not only is she a tough grader but there are very few assignments to even get graded. There are weekly discussions, two papers, and a couple of quizzes. If you fall behind, it's hard to come back. I feel like I didn't learn much.
Her quizzes were overall easy since she does have practice quizzes, but very few assignments. The lectures were just reading from the textbook and show youtube videos. She often won't give full credit for discussions. It's hard to recuperate from lost points since there isn't much opportunity. She does offer 2 extra credit opportunities.
Class consisted of just youtube videos. Discussion boards were tricky, could never tell what she was asking for. Any little mistake on those, and she'd take off half a point, leaving you with 1.5/2. It's rare to score above a C for any written assignment. Exams were all T or F. You learn more about Aztecs and Precolombian times instead of Chicanos.
The other reviews were correct, all she does is show YouTube videos and have the most confusing discussion posts for assignments. It really feels like the discussion posts are really one-sided as she is looking for a very specific response but she is very broad in the instructions of the posts.
From personal experience, the online course is a lot of work including hours of reading. The issue that I mainly had was the discussion questions, she would take a few points if you didn't follow instructions precisely. Because the class is online, it is fast pace so expect quiz after quiz.
Boring class, awful teacher. So many youtube videos about nothing. We saw two boring vlogs in class. Didn't pay attention in class and just watched and read the info myself and did good. I could write a ten page essay on how much I don't want to take this class. Good luck.
Would never want to take this class again. It was online yet I wish a god would kill me every night, so I didn't have to attend that boring and annoying class. The only saving grace was that she sounded like a female jordan peterson so that made me laugh. Youtube videos, I left feeling like I didn't learn anything. Just a waste.
Slow to grade and is a tough grader if you don't answer the questions in your reply in the exact order they're listed. Quizes are very easy. The readings aren't as hard as other people are making them out to be, maybe 45-60 min, some were longer than others, but nothing crazy.
Be prepared to read. The readings are really boring but if you like art then you might find this class interesting.This class was straightforward but really boring. Everything was on canvas so I didn't have to pay out of pocket for textbooks or anything. She didn't assign too much homework but it was the readings that made it feel like soo much.
The professor's lectures and videos do not align with weekly discussions. She expects a specific type of response, grades strictly, and offers extra credit that can significantly boost your grade. Please don't take her for your class. !!! Please ignore the people who find her amusing. You will immediately get overwhelmed once joining in class
She's the toughest grader from a professor I've ever had. I had to take this class as a prerequisite and she's so strict on what exactly she wants on her discussions. Its an Art 100 class, a INTRODUCTION to art. I don't know if her PhD has gotten to her head, but she makes her grading ridiculous and almost impossible to pass her class with an A.
DROP THIS CLASS. Discussion board directions vague. Instead of feedback, expect an entire announcement to be created to call you out. Prepare to be belittled for asking questions. FYI ALL discussion boards are LOCKED. You cannot go back and fix/edit spelling or punctuation errors (part of grade). Impossible to get full points in this class. Drop it
Not as difficult as others might say. Read discussion board prompts well or else you'll get points taken off. Any test, quiz, or exam given is mostly about the readings the professor gives out online or the discussion board. Overall, good professor, but would not take again.
Lectures are mostly YouTube videos, but professor is knowledgeable. Discussion posts can be tricky - make sure to follow instructions carefully. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for exam prep.

She'd never let us leave at the exact time we were supposed to since she would wait for the videos to finish. We'd stay an extra 5 sometimes even 10 minutes. It is easy to get distracted during class since she only shows videos and doesn't elaborate much on what the discussions are about. On top of that, she expects too much from the students.

Take it with anyone else instead. Having a piece of paper saying you're a Dr. or Teacher means just that- you're one on paper. It means nothing for tact, content of the course and attitude towards students.
This is an Art 100 class and this professor expects you to be a complete art critic. Her feedback is ridiculous as she expects you to have a very high level of understanding of the art concepts. Look before you take her.
Never have I seen such an awful teacher. Zero accountability, twists the truth and gaslights students into thinking that they're the ones who misunderstood instructions when the instructions were obviously unclear. If question her grading criteria, she will retaliate against you by finding “mistakes” in your every assignment going forward.
- "Lecture" is just youtube videos and reasing out her Canvas announcements - "Help" is just telling you to read more closely - "Sources" are wikipedia articles - "Discussion posts" are here searching for a specific answer while avoiding asking you for it directly. I have never despised a class as much as this.
Her lectures are all youtube videos and Wikipedia pages with no actual lecture from her. She will pause the video and comment on certain things but not enough to make it a lecture. She is also not tech savvy and is always ending the meeting on accident and we have to log back in multiple times.
