Shes very helpful and knows her stuff. But because English isnt her first language it can be difficult to explain questions to her.
I wouldn't recommend taking a class with her. She is pretty hard to understand because she has a thick accent. I also am not impressed with her quality of teaching as we wrote an essay in which I had the word "types" (as in types of candy for instance) and she changed my spelling to "tipes".
easy class! easy and fair marker. hard to understand cause english isn't her first language. but after a while no big deal. i'm not a fan of english, but she picks good material for reading which are enjoyable. lots a discussion in class!
Terrible professor! She is nearly impossible to understand. Alot of her comments on essays gave the impression she was barely fluent in english herself. I would avoid her at all costs.
Yeah, she has an accent, but you get over that. She's actually quite a pleasant person, and knows her stuff to the "T". She marks really easy, so it's not hard to achieve an A. Lots of class discussion, so you can get many interpretations. If you speak up in class, she'll like you. Other than that, I would reccomend her to anyone.
Makes you want to stab your eyes out with a pencil. Easy marker, but not very interesting, stutters and speaks very slowly, very boring. Sees her opinion as the only opinion.
Her accent may be a little annoying, but she is more lenient and easier than the other english teachers. you'll be on her good side if you engage in her class discussions and she always makes sure to let her students know their opinions matter to her.
She is always late for class, then feels the need to interupt us constantly during our tests to remind us about "time managment". She teaches english, yet she cannot speak english. It takes here forever to say something and her accent is very hard to understand. She doesn't understand what students are saying, and wears innapropriate clothes.
Hard to understand her most of the time because of heavy accent. Spends too much time on one topic. She cares a lot about structure and your own thoughts in Essays. She likes effort and participation in class. She is pretty easy, funny, nice !
I think Irena was a great teacher, she was enthusiastic everyday and introduced me and and my class to some extremely interesting stories. Her greatest wish is for everyone to participate and give their own point of view own point of view on the themes and symbols. She is extremely attentive and accepting to ideas which creates a good atmosphere.
She's really hard to understand - her accent is extremely thick. She's a really nice person though, keeps everything really casual which is nice. I just hate how we are assigned homework of analyzing essays and what the writer is trying to convey, but there is no essay writing. We're expected to write huge essays but we don't learn how to in class!
I thought she was an excellent prof and was very willing to help. She basically told me what she would write for the essay and then gave me great marks when she marked it. Her classes are VERY boring but attending them can be helpful.
Such a sweet teacher shes a great marker and sweet comments on essays
Awesome teacher!took her for english 102 last sem she was really sweet and a not hard marker! Take her
Excellent, learned more from her than every english teacher combined my entire life. Grammar quizzes were of perfect difficulty
Very hard to understand her accent, but you can tell she really cares about her students and what she teaches. Easy marker and going to class is completely pointless, all she did was ask us to read essays and answer questions which are irrelevant. Take her class for an easy mark!
She is a very nice woman. English 102 classes are frustrating to teach since they are mandatory for almost every program but she does her best to interest students who don't want to be there. As far as English teachers go she marks fairly easy.
Such a sweet prof,if u come to class she'll most likely remember you and you'll do fine! her grammar stuff is real helpful and pretty easy marker.
good teacher overall. Bit of a slavic accent but not incomprehensible, very helpful with questions and willing to give you good feedback on large assignments.
It takes a while to get past the accent but eventually you won't notice that anymore. As long as you keep up with the essays and stories that she assigns for reading, you should be okay. If English is not your strongest subject, definitely take her as she's a super easy marker
She's the nicest teacher I've had so far! There's a lot of student involvement in her class, and she doesn't mark too harshly. The material is very jr high, most of the assigned reading can be skipped due to it all being common sense.
I don't understand how she doesn't have a 5.0! Yes she has an accent, yes she's a little fuzzy with explaining some things, but she is one of the easiest markers and is always willing to help out. She takes attendance on random days so it's mandatory to attend but her awkward humour and genuine persona made it enjoyable! Highly recommend!
I loved her. Easiest marker on essays and she's the cutest teacher ever. Truly cares about her students.
Very easy marker, and very helping for essay writings. Would recommend to anyone trying to get easy marks.
She is a great professor. Easy marker compared to most other english teachers. She geniuenly cares for her students, and is big on participation. If you go to her to edit your essays before hand, she helps out a lot and it will definitely show in your grade.
GREAT prof, super nice. has an accent so it does make it hard to understand sometimes. i think she might be an easy grader got B+ for all essays and papers, or maybe that's actually what i deserved? she's kinda of an adorable person, she will always say "what else?" or "that was very insightful" and makes poor attempt at jokes but that makes it fun
Super nice and willing to help! She is more helpful one on one, and as long as you put in your effort she always takes time to review over your work and give you pointers. The lecture overall is kind of uninteresting, but overall she is a fairly easy marker and big on extra credit!!
Very helpful in class and during office hours. Easy marker. If you want good GPA then I strongly recommend her. Exams are based on class work. Read everything that she assigns and you will be fine.
Irene is very kind. However, her lectures were long and boring. At times it was hard to pay attention because it soundslooks as if she is reading her entire lecture word for word out of her binder. Each class there are between 1-3 readings she assigns, which are mandatory in order to participate and earn her participation marks. VERY EASY MARKER.
Very easy marker. Makes really bad jokes and laughs at them (which is awesome). Overall very fun lectures if you participate!
If you are an international student, don't pick her class she wont reply your mails have to do participation things in every class You wont understand her accent She dont like international students
Very encouraging, very very kind and super helpful! She has a sense of humour and she will make very nice and self boosting comments every time you participate.
Irene is a great prof. She has a bit of an accent but you eventually get used to it. She's very lenient, gives extensions without asking reason why and a VERY easy marker. If you need a good grade in the class to boost your GPA, she's the prof to choose.
Absolutely incredible prof. Keeps class interesting and funny. Takes attendance regularly and keeps track of in-class participation. Very simple, short readings assigned nearly every class. Expect lots of easy class/group discussion. Provides clear checklists for all assignments and provides lots of advice and feedback. Simply wonderful.
-Clear expectations for assignments & papers - In class participation and attendance is very important -Gives helpful feedback -Lots of Reading -Classes were repetitive
Really enjoyed her class! She does have an accent but she was very clear when speaking. She expects a short essay to be read before every class. Fair and clear marker. Participation matters during class, she will learn your name and call on you
She is an amazing professor. She is very helpful and caring and really wants her students to do well. Best tip is to participate in class and take good notes, as they are very helpful when writing your papers. Also after you have written your paper, go to her office hours. She is more than willing to point out places of improvement.
She's nice, and tries to be funny. She tries to make jokes, but they end up being funny because no one laughs. She marks easy-ish. Her schedule for the term consists of lots of books, short stories, and excerpts, and she does thorough analysis of all books. Be prepared to read all the stories.
Irene is a great prof, she makes her grading very clear cut. If you participate it'll definitely help. I would recommend her to anyone taking english!
She's very good, she explains her expectations clearly and marks pretty fairly! Loved her class, would take again!
one of the best profs i have ever taken for english 102. She's an excellent prof who knows how to make class exciting. i got an A- in her class and i don't like english. She does have an accent but lets be real we also know people who have accent so it shouldn't matter .. i wish i would've taken her for 103. I REALLY RECOMMEND HER for easy marks
Irene is amazing! Take her if you can, you will not regret :) , She's so kind and very clear on what she expects on essays, lots of readings and participation matters. would take again
Irene is very caring and there for her students. She gives you a detailed list as to her expectations on the papers she assigns. As long as you follow her checklist you will do great in her class. Will take again ! (Took her for ENG 102 and 103)
I LOVEEEE HER, had her for 101 & 102, shes amazing and is willing to give extra credits. very fair and as long as you read the material and participate u should have no problems passing with a good grade. take her YOU WONT REGRET
Always have the reading ready for class, same schedule everyday: Review readings, discuss in class, grammar (if time available). Has you write small paragraphs with a group about the short stories you read. Couple Grammar quizzes and 4 different essays (easy if you follow her criteria) will be available after class if you have extra questions.
Irene is not only the most wonderful professor but she's one of the sweetest people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. She wants students to do good, and she does everything in her power to make sure her students succeed. Do the readings, go to class, participate in class, and see her if you have any questions regarding an essay and it's an A+.
Irene is wonderful ! she's a really fair grader and is extremely engaging in class. Earning an A in her class requires great attendance and daily participation. As long as you join in on the discussions and show her that you're trying you will receive a good grade.
Absolutely wonderful professor. If you go to class and participate you will do great!!
Dr. Tsobrova is a fantastic english professor. She gives great feedback and is a respectable marker. If you put in the effort and show up to her class you will get a good mark. She is very companionate towards students and is respectful of everyone.
Irene is a great professor; if you do the readings and participate in class you will do well. She is passionate about english and has cute jokes. You're expected to read a short story before every class and a bit a grammar so pay attention but she is very fair with grades.
Irene was a terrific english prof. I am personally not very good at english, however, i did quite well in the course. If you ask for help with essays, she will basically tell you what to write. She is also a very generous marker. Attendance and participation are for marks, so show up. Great prof.
Irene is a wonderful prof if you are willing to participate. She tells you exactly what to write on your essays and marks generously. You definitely have to do the readings though. Also she is a very fast talker but if you can keep up you'll do great.
A portion of your grade is marked on attendance, and the opinions expressed in class will be an asset when it comes to the writing assignments, so make sure to go! She is usually pretty clear on what she expects on assignments, but visiting her outside of class hours will really help boost marks.
Dr. Tsobova is an amazing prof. If you do your readings before every class, and pay attention to the grammar she teaches, you'll do well. Tells you exactly what she expects for essays. She is super helpful during office hours and going to see her makes you stand out in class. Very generous marker.
Irene is amazing, she could not be more clear on marking criteria and sets you up to know exactly what you need to know for tests and papers. She explains the material in great detail and is obviously passionate about her job. Attendance is necessary as there is in class group work for marks, so just show up and participate and you'll be fine.
Irene is awesome! I was worried that english would lower my GPA but instead it raised it. Her lectures are long, however, she is an easy marker! I would recommend her for anyone. Just show up to class and you will do well. I received an A on every paper will minimal effort.
Irene is super funny however her classes can be dry, as this is English. Her humour makes the class enjoyable though. Lots of papers but if you put in a little effort she'll give a good mark. She doesn't post marks so it was hard to figure out what my mark was throughout the semester. Participation and attendance is marked too!
Honestly the best professor I've had all year. Not a tough marker and clearly tells you exactly how she wants the papers written and what will be on her quizzes. Lectures are a bit dry but she does her best to make them entertaining. Really cares about her students. Make sure to attend class though because she marks participation.
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND SKIPPING CLASS! Irene has an incredible passion for English literature, most lectures are based off analyzing assigned readings, followed by discussions. She doesn't post many marks on blackboard but does hand back assignments fairly quick. Her assignments are interesting. The notes she prepares are handy if you fill as you go.
She is a really nice prof who gives good feedback on papers and tells beforehand what she expects on them. Lots of group work that is based around the readings done and participation is required in order to do well in her class.
Great professor, hoping ill get her again during my program.
Amazing professor whom will help you to succeed if you put in the effort. Clear grading criteria through outlines, and clear indications of what will be on quizzes. Highly recommended.
Professor Tsobrova is super nice and actually really funny. Her accent takes a while to warm up to but the class overall is great. The one thing to take caution of is participation. She tends to call on students for answers but is even helpful if you are incorrect. She is a consistent grader and does not mark too hard. I would take again!
In class she only reads off of slides that she shares so if you don't care for the participation marks you don't need to attend class. She was very helpful with essays, if you take them to her during her office hours she would edit your essays and it would definitely boost your grade. Highly recommend!
She is a very nice and funny prof but expects a lot from her students. Every class you need to make sure you read the assigned short story before class and so having her three times a week meant 3 sometimes 4 short stories that you needed to read which is time consuming. Easy marker but midterm is based off of 16 short stories.
Irene is a "perspicacious" and caring instructor. She makes English more bearable by infusing humour into her lectures and values student contributions. If you participate, do your work to the best of your ability, ask her questions and come to class you will do great! She is a gem.
She's funny and very nice however at first is a little bit hard to understand with her accent but you get used to it. Easy marker. Going to class is not mandatory, she posts her slides that she reads off of on blackboard. Every class is the same so you can definitely miss class and still pass.
Irene is enthusiastic, caring, funny, and well-versed. Class participation matters, there's lots of group exercises, and tons of grammar! A few simple papers here and there, but I felt my papers didn't necessarily deserve the excellent marks she awarded me (lol). If you get the chance to take a class with her, I HIGHLY recommend you do!
Best English teacher I never have. Super clear marking criteria. So kind person. If she knows you are a hard worker. She will put effort to you and let you pass. Easy maker super nice prof. I glad I can take her English 102 plus 103.
Pretty easy marker English has never been my strong suit but I still got pretty decent marks. You must read the readings for that week because there will be group work in class. She is pretty sweet the only down side to her class is that she will call people out to read their work or answer questions.
Good Prof for a spring course! her quizzes, midterm and final are super easy as long as you do the reading. Easy marker on essays. Her accent takes a little getting used to but overall she's pretty nice. Participation is key.
Irene is a great teacher. She gives clear, specific feedback, like checklists for assignments. If you visit her in office hours, she gives amazing tips and advice for papers. Put in effort and you'll do well. She loves in class participation and gives marks for it. She has an accent but is easy to understand. For sure taking a class with her again!
If I could take every english class with Irene, I would. She is an EXCELLENT introductory prof who wants her students to succeed. Participation matters, so answer her questions! Theres a lot of group work too. Honestly can't say enough good things. Really grateful I got into her class. Makes having an evening class worth it.
Irene is what every English teacher should be! I always had tough luck in English, but Irene allowed me to grow as a student. She always gives amazing feedback (even if you're not right), and her assignments are all very clear. She gives about 1 month heads up before anything is due which is nice. Participation is HUGE for her, show up and its a A.
I highly recommend Irene, I used to hate English but going to her classes made me actually enjoy it for once. She has clear expectations and encourages you to participate in class and with others. She gives you plenty of time to complete assignments and she explains these assignments in much detail and depth so you're not feeling lost.
Great teacher!!!
the easiest prof ever. she gives so many bonus marks and you dont need to attend class but her slides tell you everything you need to know. such an easy marker and quizzes are very easy. oral presentation was easy a well. take her class!!!
Irene is an excellent professor for a first year English course. Her expectations and grading criteria are very clear and concise. My only caution to other students considering her class, is she does not post marks on blackboard, and she takes a long time to return papers/exams. Participation matters greatly, go often, speak up, & read everything!
Irene makes it very clear what is needed from you on essays and quizzes! She gave great feedback on essays that truly helped your overall grade. Show up and participate and it's an easy A. She also gives many options for essay topics!
Best English Professor I've ever had. Participation is very important but very easy to get in on, whether your insights are accurate or not. Show up to class, read the required material, and you should have no problem getting a B+ at the lowest.
Irene is one of the best Professors I've ever had! If you have the chance, take her class! She gives lots of topics for essays, so you aren't stuck writing about something you have no interest in. Class participation is important, but the discussions are interesting so it's easy to have an opinion. Make sure to show for class, she notices!
Shes a great prof, has a small accent but still very easy to understand! If youve read the book and/or watch the book videos on YouTube then you can easily get an A+ in her class! Just understand the material and engage during discussions
Irene was the best prof this semester. Shes funny and incredibly sweet and understanding. Participation definitely matters so sit by people you like because you'll be talking to each other every class. If you skip class the entire semester and just come for the quizzes you will pass though too. Easy grader, never got below an A. Shes great!
take her class, she' the best prof I've ever had. She only has 2 essay papers on easy topics about fun books that you read (example would be Gilgamesh or Achilles). She has "mini-quizzes" on each story you read, but you don't need to buy the book to do anything, just watch the online summaries, the quizzes are 8 written, a sentence each "name him "
I took her class during the Spring Semester and although I was. hesitant because I hadn't took an English course for about 3 years, she made it seem really easy. English isn't my first language, but I still ended each assignment with 80s or above. She gives great feedback and allows you to understand your mistakes. She cares about her students.
I love this prof! She is absolutely hilarious in lectures, answers questions quickly, and provides lots of room for extra credit marks. This was my first time in a uni English course, I thought I would hate it but I did really well and actually enrolled in another of her classes. She's great!
Professor Tsobrova was fantastic. I don't love English, but she made it very enjoyable and quite easy. Grammar quizzes were a pain at first, but I actually noticed them helping with my writing throughout the semester. Assigned 5 essays with various due dates, but only expects you to had in 2 of them. That flexibility was nice. Overall a great Prof!
she is AMAZING!! I cant even emphasize this enough. she grades easily (but obviously not if there was no effort put in). I misunderstood an essay and wrote it completely wrong. when i told her i could redo it, she told me she would mark it how i wrote it, not how she assigned it. shes always making us laugh in our lectures and just a pure angel
I was worried about English but she was a great prof and I would definitely take her class again. I received good marks and great feedback. Her feedback is useful and if you follow it, you will see your marks go up. No readings in her class too.
Shes the sweetest most caring prof ever. She is so passionate about English and gives good feedback so she does take slightly longer to mark. 10/10 definitely take her if you ever have the chance, made me actually like English class.
I was pretty worried about this class as English is not my strong suit. Irene is one of the best professors I have ever had. She made the class fun, there are lots of options for essays, and she is a really fair marker. Go to her live lectures and participate for marks. You do not have to buy the textbook. I would 100% take this professor again.
I really enjoyed Irene, she was a fair marker and had solid tips on how to improve my writing. Her lectures were a bit dry at times, but it's English so that's fair. I enjoyed the sources and readings assigned and felt it was relatively easy to do well in this class. I'd gladly take another class taught by Irene.
Shes such a kind person, and a very detailed prof. She gives great feedback for all her papers, and is a really easy marker IMO. Her accent takes a little bit of time to get used to but other than that shes great.
Tsobrova was the best Professor that I have ever had. I was literally staying up till the sun rises each time the classes opened us just so I could have a chance to get in her classes. I wish all my classes were with her. 10/10
Amusing & engaging. Takes note of who is contributing, so her grading criteria for in-class work are as fair as possible. Extremely professional. Shares her opinions on literary works but encourages different viewpoints. Encourages group work & discussion. Obviously invested in her students learning the material. Flexible & fair.
Her classes weren't the most useful to attend. The class was the exact same every time I showed up. Lots of participation is needed, and it's worth 5% of your final grade. The papers were straightforward, and she was an easy marker. My grade 12 English final grade was a 63%, and I ended up with an A with her, so I highly recommend her.
I loved Irene a lot. She has a good sense of humor and is very open-minded to all viewpoints and perspectives on the readings. Participation is highly encouraged and does matter. If you show your efforts in the class, you will do well. I would take another class instructed by her in a heartbeat.
She marks accordingly if you do your work well and gives extensions when needed!
Irene is incredible, I hated English until I met her in 102, had to take another one of her classes. If you engage in the class and read the stuff she asks you to read you will get an A+. she is not like the typical English prof.. if you did the work you will get the grade. Such a sweet person too, always making corny jokes but they work for her.
Irene is wonderful! She is humorous, passionate about the material covered and encourages participation. She vitalizes all ideas and perspectives when analyzing readings and generates fun class discussions. Very fair grader, would take her again and again!
I was a true despiser of English as a subject, but taking Engl103 with Irene turned it into the part of my day I looked forward to most. There is a ton of reading to do, but they are all doable within ~1 hour except for large projects, and she provides all the material. Participation in discussions and understanding of text is often required though
