terrible teacher!
Professor Kearse could do better if she put forth the effort to. She comes into class with an attitude of no interest and then expect for her students to show interest. She also does not check with the TA(Teacher Assistant)to make sure she has all of the students assisgnments and grades which is bad becuase when grades are due the students suffer!
I would not recommend taking this teacher.
One tough cookie. I would not take her again, although outside of the classroom she is quite warm and interesting, funny even.
I didnt even take her class BUT what I heard was enough for me to know better. Listen to your sisters and DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. No one likes a professor with a bad attitude.
She's EVIL! She made my freshman year HORRIBLE. I HATE everything about this woman, she has the WORST ATTITUDE and should NOT be teaching at Spelman College. After taking her for a class, I no longer wanted to be at Spelman College because of her, she doesnt keep up w/her TA and my entire yr of work went ungraded b/c of her wtf. NEVER TAKE HER!!!!!
Professor Kearse is the type that you have to get used to. However, she is a sweet lady, who can be very helpful. CIS 100 is an easy course if you read the textbook and get the assignments done on time. Her grading for late assignments suck, so make sure you go to her office hours if you don't understand an assignment.
I thought she was a great teacher. She did make us work for our grade but it helped me learn. I you aren't prepared to actually learn then find somebody else. I wish all my professors were like her.
She is a great teacher but she will make you work for your grade. So, if your trying to get an easy A she ain't the one... but then honestly none of the prof. in the cs dept are. At the end of the day i learned alot and gained a new fav. teacher.
I went into the final with an 89, but I received a B- in the class. This class was horrible. If it was not for her teaching style I would have got more of the class. DO NOT TAKE her if you care about your GPA.
Prof. Kearse is a great teacher. I was told by others not to take her b/c she is hard, but truthfully, she lets you do your own thing. The whole course is basically online. You can start assignments when you want, as long as they're turned in on time. She gives really nice tidbits of computer knowledge out every once in a while.
DO NOT TAKE HER! She is rude, takes way to long to grade simple assignments, and barely seems to care about the students. I deeply regret taking her and she's terrible with office hours and never responds to emails.
Class was okay but she could be rude at times...a lot of work comes with this class and the chapter test are the hardest part.
I advise you all not to take her. She can be cool and helpful, but majority of the time she has an attitude and can be rude. She was not always available for office hours. She makes you feel stupid when you ask a question. My GPA was greatly affected and I do not want anyone to experience that.
She was a pretty cool person but she wasn't very helpful whenever I asked a question she always made me feel stupid for it. It was a really hard class and I would suggest not taking it with her. She's not much help and because I wasn't able to get help I never got the grades I was used to. Over my gpa was affected in a negative way
Where do I begin? She was an interesting professor. Not caring much for her students was evident, for she did not respond to emails or was not in her office during office hours. OH! Don't ask a questions - you'll be lucky if she answers you. When she does, she makes you regret asking the question. She does not believe in respecting her students.
DO NOT TAKE HER! I really wish I would have rated her before I chose her because her class really made my GPA go down. She is a hard grader and she has a very NASTY ATTITUDE! She does not give you extra help if needed and she's never in her office during her office hours. Save yourself the trouble and take someone else.
She has a very discouraging attitute. Gives a lot of work. Take this course freshman or somphomore year, never as a senior. I wouldn't have taken her if there was a choice. Advice is do all the work as perfectly as you can if you want a B and above. If you need help contact the TA.
The class required a lot of attention and retention. Prepare to work every day until the end of the class, sometimes over. Dr. Kearse comes off as rude and impatient, but you must work past that in order to get a decent grade. She gives lots of classwork, homework, quizzes, and she gives four tests. Attend class or you may miss an assignment.
If you are not into technology, computer science specifically do not take this lady. She will leave you high and dry to fail and will fail you. There is a ridiculous amount of work in this course with very little teaching. Horrible prof. Issa No.
This professor was not accessible outside of class, lectures did not cover topics to be tested on. This professor did not give feedback and was not caring.
Do not take this woman. She simply does too much as far as coursework and has a bad attitude 85% of the time. If you have other options, choose em.
Her class is easy and can be taken online, but her attitude like many users already commented is disgusting. Extremely condensing and rude. Her class can be taken online. Attendance matters and make sure you stay on top of your assignments. If you can, avoid taking her class as she is simply just a rude person. She will test your patience.
I am a senior and I NEVER do rates, but I hated my experience in this course so I just want you all to know she WILL fail seniors, she is rude and does not care! If you can avoid this class at all cost, DO SO!!
Avoid her class if possible! I'm usually not a hard person to please when it comes to professors, but I could not wait to be done with her class. She was very rude and whenever I asked her a question, she made me feel stupid. I went to her office hours, and I wish I didn't because she was no help at all.
She tries to be helpful, but is unwilling to be reasonable sometimes and often comes off as rude and blunt. She says she understands that computer science is hard to learn, but doesn't give any ways to relieve students of stress and concern.
This professor gives 4 tests a semester and she does not give feedback on them. She also takes days to respond to emails. If you can avoid her, please do!
This professor is a not a good professor. She always has an attitude during class and when asking a question she asks a question with a question. Not helpful AT ALL. Do not take if you can avoid her.
I am a bio major; I was not excited to take computer science. We had weekly zybooks assignments. She answers questions with questions, but if you are adamant about learning (I was at the start, then I gave up), she will help. You haveg to keep pressing her out. She appreciated effort though. I took this during covid so that she may be better IRL.
Could be better with communication. The homework and notes definitely pile up.
CIS 111 is one of the most challenging courses I have ever taken. Learning computer science alone is hard, but when you have a professor that does not support you, it is even harder. I do not recommend her class in the slightest. Her class is the easiest way to drop your GPA and overall not a good use of your time.
Professor Kearse is a very difficult. She does not teach material and answers questions with questions and makes you feel stupid for asking. Most of the class is working on an online platform not lecturing or teaching - most material is learned on your own. She takes a very long time to grade assignments. She does not care about your success.
Do not DO NOT take this lady! Just wait until next semester. Do NOT take Iretta. The worst professor by far Ive ever taken. Has the worst attitude and is just very nasty spirited in general. For the sake of your mental health and gpa do not enroll into her class.
If you do not have knowledge prior to coding, or do not study at least 4 hours a day for this class, be prepared. This has been my most difficult class yet, and If you have the option to take her I recommend finding someone else.
She doesnt really break down her lesson. Dont take her if you dont want to fail!!!
She isnt a good role model for me or my classmates
This class was the soul cause of my depression this semester. The learning environment was hostile and it feels like Kearse is trying to fail everyone. DO NOT take her as a senior because she does not care about failing students. AVOID HER CLASS AT ALL COST!!! rip my gpa:(
Committed to failing her students, by any and all means, while not caring about doing so as well.
She is very bipolar in class and does not care for her students. All hw is on codio, and she does not make them so if you get something wrong that was supposed to be right, she won't change your grade. Never answers emails, and each exam is impossible to get higher than a B. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!
I'm sorry if you have to take her class. Kearse will straight up ignore your emails and on several occasions put in wrong grades in my moodle then refused to fix them. Poor teaching skills, the lessons are just summaries of subjects she assumes the class already knew. You can't get your test back and see what you got wrong to study from.
A lot of my colleagues did not do so well which is why I rate her lower. I feel like after a certain point in the semester her help will not help if you do not understand the basic concepts. We had to look things up constantly instead of being taught and practicing which I believed really hindered the amount of lecture being retained.
Take literally anybody else. You will be in there stressed and confused everyday. Codio will not help you. Her office hours will not help you.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER
Mrs. Kearse advised us to read the chapters in the textbook several times. Initially, I didn't take her seriously, but in the latter third of the semester, I realized that that was the best advice to be (somewhat) successful in the course. READ THE TEXTBOOK. I read each chapter thrice and that helped greatly with the exams.
she made coding (something fun) so boring. she is also rude to students and does not help when asked.
Professor Kearse is a horrendous teacher. She does not answer questions when asked, rushes lecture slides, and is overall rude to students. Some notable quotes by her: "I don't know I don't have a PhD in Python.", "I've never tried that, do it yourself.", *Student asks question* "Ok."
Moves fast through lecture slides, does not give students time to take notes. When asked questions, sometimes she just refuses to answer. Unable to do a lot of problems she assigns, claiming "she does not have a phd in python". If you have never coded before taking this course, please do not take this professor, she will make u hate CS.
She doesn't properly answer questions, can't do her own coding problems ( she "doesn't have a phd in python"), and is condescending. By this, I mean that her definition of explaining is repeating her words and emphasizing certain words. I only have a decent grade bc I already have coding experience. Better off being taught by the TAs of the class
Ms. Kearse is very smart and explains to you everything on her PowerPoint clearly and thoroughly. We learn something new every class, so it makes sense why people say that they can't keep up; but take notes, go to class, and go to recitation if you need extra help. It does take heavy logical thinking to do python, so it's not for everyone.
I am literally in her class, but I go to McDaniels's lecture. The difference is absolutely insane. Do not take this class, take any other professor. She will literally introduce a new topic, show you a problem, and tell you to "do it" without showing you what you're supposed to do. For your own sake - take a different professor.
I went to one of the top computer science schools to write a bunch of tedious, mind-numbing implementation problems.
Iretta B. C. Kearse's daily class routine is to go through the slides (which aren't super helpful to begin with) so quickly that it's impossible to get all the information down. My favorite part of class is when she gets her own coding questions wrong, tries to brush it off as an example of a common error, and asks the students to fix her mistake.
If you are a beginner to coding, prepare yourself for a whole lot of confusion and head scratches. If you get her, get your youtube and search bar ready.
This class was awful. She would not post what we learned or any type of lecture materials.
Iretta B. C. Kearse is the GOAT. She let us out early from class today :D
Tests were relatively easy (with the third exam having a class average of 95) and the lectures are pretty straightforward although sometimes they go relatively fast. Although I do believe going to the lectures were important, you don't really need the full class to learn the material just only the lecture. The homework wasn't too bad as well
You will be just fine. She is nice, stays after lectures to answer questions, and emphasizes important topics in lectures. She can sometimes be short with understanding your question but you just have to try clearly communicate your misunderstanding and be patient with her. Recitations and homework can also teach you everything you need for tests.
While most people give her a bad rep b/c she's condescending during lecture, her office hours are awesome! She's vv friendly and willing to help you step-by-step with questions! In honesty, this class isn't that difficult. Exams are very straightforward with lectures and homework isn't too bad either. Go to her office hours or recitation if need be
You learn more by not going to lectures because she makes the content so boring you cant pay attention.
She offers enough practice materials to do well on tests. Very few lectures were memorable, but she is very approachable after class. Be warned, if you are not interested in CS or have no experience coding, you will have to put in lots of extra work to do well.
This teacher made the course harder than it needed to be in terms of the lecture notes that didn't add up with the homework or seemed particularly useful. She is a friendly teacher that is easily approachable outside of class but during class seems harsh. She often yelled during lectures, making the students more stressed rather than helping them.
The only way she can make her teaching better is by getting replaced.
Pretty harsh during lecture which discourages students from asking questions. Practice exams were very helpful and similar to tests. Office hours are almost always full, you can be in there waiting well over an hour to get help. Recitation was helpful. However, I feel like the only reason I did as good was because I had some experience.
Looking back on the class, it would have been more beneficial for me to read the textbook than attend lectures. Lectures were very fast paced and hard to understand.
She exactly wasn't the nicest. As someone that had zero coding experience, I bombed the first test. I managed to get a high B. I would definitely go to recitations. She is really pretentious and gives off the impression that she 100% that b.
Avoid taking her at all costs. She decided that the content we were learning in 1315 was outdated, so we are learning 1301 content. This is fine, but if I wanted to take 1301, I would have taken it instead. She just reads off of the lecture slides, moves quickly, and frequently comes into class late. She is also unapproachable and condescending.
She is a horrific professor. Literally take anyone else if you can. Sometimes, she will mess up the code in front of everyone and students will have to correct her. Has responded to questions with "I don't know I didn't get my PhD in Python." Avoid at all costs.
Changed the course material of CS1315 to make it reflect exactly what 1301 is doing. I would have just taken 1301 with a better professor is this was the case. Slide presentations are extremely vague and good luck doing the homeworks with only a little bit of information. Literally used any other source I could to know what I was doing (recitation)
took for CS 1315 at GT. no extra credit, professor lectures very fast and expects us all the understand everything on the slides the minute she says it, doesn't answer questions proficiently and often doesn't even know the answer. tas don't care much about the class but luckily material/hw is easy. attendance not mandatory-you can get A by skipping
Her last name might as well be curse the way she curses us with grades.
TAKE KANTWON OR ANYONE ELSE INSTEAD. SHE DOES NOT KNOW MATLAB. Its literally better for you to skip lecture and learn on your own instead of showing up to lectures. Her voice is so monotone that youll give up trying to pay attention after 5 mins. For the love of god don't take her just because she fits into your schedule.
Taking this professor was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. Never in my life have I met a professor so uneducated and unenthusiastic about the course subject that they teach. Don't take her. For the love of god please don't take her. You'll hate yourself.
Iretta Kearse is beyond unqualified to teach this course. Fueled by a ridiculous ego, she teaches in a horrendously condescending manner that leaves students feeling clueless and reprimanded. Lectures are a mixture of nearly yelling at the class in an admonishing tone and asking the students to answer their own questions (bc she doesnt know the ans
Here is an example of Kearse's lack of respect (and education) that speaks for itself: the first day of class, when reviewing basic functions, someone asks what "sind". As would intuitively make sense, this is the function for sine, in degrees. While this simple answer was all that was required, Kearse responds: "idk, im not a math person". HELLO
I cannot stress how important it is to avoid this professor. If i could tell my pre-freshman self ONE THING, that would be exactly it. This professor deserves every one of her abhorrent reviews; THESE ARE NOT EXAGGERATIONS. DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. PROFESSOR. EPECIALLY if you have no prior coding knowledge, KEARSE IS NOT FOR YOU (or any other human) :)
Lectures do not pertain to assignments. I have learned absolutely nothing. I consider myself a pretty motivated student, and this professor has completely killed my will to learn and, quite frankly, my will to live.
Not the worst but not great either. Really boring lectures. Lectures often didn't cover the stuff on the exam so you would need to go to a recitation to learn everything for the quiz. Grading scale was very forgiving though (homework weighed as much as quizzes). If you can avoid her, I would. If you get her, be prepared to put in extra work.
Clearly very knowledgeable but her lectures are rushed and most learning is done on your own outside of class.
Professor Kearse is very passive-aggressive and is simply flawed compared to the other professors available. It seems unfair that students in her section are put at a disadvantaged simply due to her horrible lectures and how inaccessible she is. You learn more from the TAs than and yourself than anything.
I had to teach myself or rely on TAs to learn anything in this class, so lecture heavy and paced very weirdly.
just regurgitates what's already in the notes, doesn't understand matlab, stalls and goes very slow in class because she clearly doesn't know what she's talking about
Just go to other lectures.
She is sincerely so bad don't want to help. Every time I ask a question she just use something else to get over it. I never understood what she was saying. She just steal other professor's ppt and read through it. She don't know what she is doing. DO NOT TAKE HER
bad prof, cannot teach at all. does not know anything...
Actually horrible do not take this lady. It's my worst grade on my transcript and not because the content was impossible, but because she is so so bad. Honestly if you get her just teach yourself, you'll be better off.
Worst teacher I have ever had in the history of my college experience. Rude to her students and does not know any of the content. TAs had to come on to her about how she taught us something incorrect. Classes only go over her notes for the main part, which arent even as good as another professor's which we can also see.
Prof just showed up to class and read the slides. She lacks familiarity with the homework of the students, as she does not really know what type of questions students are being tasked to do in the HW. Some of the slides in her class had errors when being run through the python compiler (python3). Exams are very short in time and long. Please avoid.
Probably the worst lecturer of all time. You are better off doom-scrolling on TikTok than attending irettas class. Her teaching style consists of reading of the slides, and having no idea what she is talking about. The only way to get a good grade in this course is by going to TA office hours and workshops. It baffles me she is an actual professor.
WORST CLASS I HAVE EVRY TAKEN. I took Comp Sci A in High School and got a C in this class, barely.. This is an intro class and shouldn't have more work than my other 11 credits combined. Disappointed in the school. Labs were fun
