Difficult to understand from the accent and she didnt usually write up theorems and rules to follow when teaching. Instead she would teach using problems as examples. For math, having a list of rules to follow is usually more helpful for me. Also, at times she seemed more interested in taking attendance than teaching.
Great professor! She has an accent, but after a while, you learn to listen to it and ignore it. She did a very nice job explaining calc II ! I recommend her. She is very systematic in all that she writes up on the board. Her tests are fair and not too challenging if you do all the homework and come to class!
Loved this teacher i had her for 121 and 150 she's grate! She's very clear about what she expects and she's very helpful during class and during her office hours. She teaches the material thoroughly and she's very nice in person too. i would definately recommend Irina as an instructor :)
AMAZING PROF. explained everything clearly and was very helpful with questions. I had previously failed math 121 but with Irina I passed with a B+. I will do everything I can to take another math class with her and highly recommend her!
Great teacher, her accent can be a little distracting at times but if you are paying attention I don't think it affects your ability to learn from her at all. I think she is amazing!
Teaches everything by the literal definition. Tests and quizzes are challenging. Ended up doing a CR/NR. One of those professors with no mercy. No notes and no calculators on tests!
Amazing Professor. She teaches in a very detail manner and she is happy to answer any questions. Her test are quizzes are hard though, but do the home work and you should be fine.
I thought this teacher was terrible. She was rude and had no intrest in the students actually learning.
Great Teacher! Very helpful and pretty passionate about math. Her tests are straightforward. Doesn't grade homework, and periodic 2 question quizzes. Definitely made calc easy to understand!
Good teacher; bad communication skills. She loses a lot of important concepts in translation, and while she tries to make things easier to understand, she will go way overboard and put you to sleep before she's finished graphing every single possible solution (and before you get the point). Not terrible, not great.
Class wasn't too hard, and you use the textbook often. She is very hard to understand with her heavy Russian accent, but i was bored to death during her lessons and very confused with her assignment organization. COME PREPARED AND DON'T BE LATE
Irina was a pretty hard and strict math teacher. She is strict about notation and she hated it when you made simple math errors. But she was very helpful and explained the work well. I believe she is an excellent teacher. If you start off bad she will help, but if she doesn't see improvement she will stop caring. Just work hard and do homework.
Very easy class. Make sure to pay attention, as she is Russian. Just do the HW & Quizzes and you'll be fine :)
She is very hard to understand with her Russian accent. Cares more about attendance than the actual subject. NO MERCY ON QUIZZES AND TESTS! No notes/formulas. No calculators (later you can but doesn't help). Counts off heavily for simple errors. Try to avoid if possible.
This professor seems to really know her stuff when it comes to math but she doesn't seem to always explain things very clearly. She enjoys teaching by using examples but does not always clarify the concepts behind the steps. She will FREAK OUT over small things and waste class time telling you about how disrespectful all college students are.
She is strict, negative, and very condescending. Her way or no way, don't expect mercy. Does not explain clearly and expects for her students to already know how to solve the problems. Difficult to understand. Gives attitude about questions during class. Be prepared to do tons of homework.
Irina is very smart and I liked her class. The quizzes and exams she warns you about in advance and also tells you what will be covered. Her accent is a little tough sometimes, but usually very clear. Some may think she's a little harsh, but they should probably act like adults in college.
Very strict! If you are late or get kicked out of class because you broke one of her crazy rules you are counted absent for one of her allowed 3 before you are dropped. Is impossible to learn from, doesn't really care about the students. Avoid her at all costs!
Not an easy professor, but if to want to really learn calculus take her. Wonderful professor! Little hard on the grading notation is really important. Overall i recommend her. Not impossible to get an A, just put in the work.
Excellent Professor, best I've ever had!
A really really bad teacher! I cannot understand her Russian accent at all!! She is not able to make me understand the knowledge!!!
Great class I enjoyed it. This class in my opinion is straightforward except for series. I think she is a great teacher. taught me a ton of notion which I appreciate. Like a pervious comment said, if you want to learn calculus you can not ask for a better teacher. Piece of advice "Show up on time to class"
This class was extremely useful if you want to learn calc. She is a great teacher. She is tough with her grading but I learned a lot from her. I am glad I took her class. I learned a lot
Very strict grading, accent hard to understand.
The class average was about a 40% and after our most recent test she told us that we shouldn't need an instructor
She is a very good teacher. She knows her stuff, but she is a very tough grader. Her tests are not impossible to pass but notation is the thing that can get you an A or a C. Just make sure you follow proper notation and know what you're doing. If you have a question make sure to ask her after class or in her office hours, she will embarrass you.
She teaches class as if it was a high school class. Yells at students, confiscates cell phones, and treats people like they are 14.
Soo bad. She has a negative attitude towards students and if you get behind, you are totally screwed. I dropped the class during the 11th week, and when I went in to drop the class, she told me that I might just be a C studient (Russian accent) and that taking it again won't help. I'm in the class again with a professor who cares and I have a 100%.
Mrs. Vasileva was a wonderful teacher! She tells you exactly how your work should be so she is a tough grader on tests and quizzes. Homework isn't mandatory but I highly recommend doing it because practicing is the only way to do well in her class. 12 unannounced quizzes (10 pts each but she drops the two lowest), 3 tests (100), and a final (200).
Tough teacher
Irina may seem really cold or tough, but she is the clearest Calculus teacher I have ever had. If you are trying hard and are doing your homework, you will do great in her class. Irina has an incredibly low tolerance for careless students and interruptions, but she will give you respect in return for your respect for her.
She may be a tough teacher but as long as you do your work and do not dis respect her you will do well
Tough but a good instructor nonetheless.
She's a really tough grader on notation especially. Doesn't always understand the questions being asked and so won't always provide the best answers. If you go to her office hours she's really nice and understanding and a lot more helpful than in class. Don't be late or use your phone in class or else she'll kick you out.
Irina was honestly a great and helpful 181 professor. She is strict on cell phones and texting, talking, and tardiness. But if you're there to learn that shouldn't be a problem. Irina was also strict about notation, but it teaches you a lot. Do the homework, and everything is very straightforward. She's very clear and friendly- just do your work.
Dr. Vasileva was absolutely the WORST professor I have ever had. She has a really high pitched voice, which makes lecture painful, and a thick Russian accent. She accepts students to know everything and refuses to show all the steps in her work. Also, she'll call you out if you're even a few minutes late or if your phone accidentally goes off.
Professor Vasileva is a good mathematician but a poor teacher. First day of class she said that it was up to us to learn the material whether she teaches it or not. Not friendly, doesn't foster an atmosphere of learning. She expects problems exactly as she shows them. Class size was down about 70% from beginning to end of the semester.
Professor Vasileva is definitely a tough grader but gives you good feedback as to what she expects. Out of most math professors I've had at UNM, she is by far one of the best. She expects a lot from her students but backs these expectations by providing you with the knowledge needed to do well in the class. Do the homework, ask questions!
She is a very tough grader, but she is a great teacher. She is very clear on the work she shows us, therefore expects us to know it. She may come off as very serious and rude but if you talk to her one on one, she is very caring and nice. I didn't get the best grade overall, but that comes from my part, not hers.
Irina knows a lot about calculus and will help you learn the material well. She is a little intimidating but as long as you do what you need to do you will be fine. The class consisted of a homework quiz each week and 4 tests. As long as you pay attention in class and do the homework and study you will pass. I would take calculus again with her.
Vasileva's lectures were fast-paced, but she always answers questions and will re-work through specific parts of problems to make sure you understand them. Hw is optional, but really should be done because the quizzes (there are 10-12) are usually 1-3 problems of medium difficulty from the homework. Gave lots of good feedback on the four exams!
If you go to her office hours she will be more lenient with you at the end of the semester. Do all the homework, and the syllabus problems are a majority of where she gets the test questions from! DO THEM!
The material can be difficult, but overall she's a good lecturer. Her tests are straight from the HW and from examples in class. She is very picky with notation and will mark you off for absolutely anything! She's rude, very strict, and not approachable at all.
It's myway or the highway is her approach. I have taken calc. before and passed with a high B. But when I took her calc. class I failed. I tried to set up an appointment to meet with her because her office hours were during one of my classes and the calculus table was open while I was at work and she straight up refused to meet me. Dropped with a W
Although there is a lot of homework assigned, she does not collect but expects that students keep up on their own. She is a great lecturer and leaves everything simple. Keep up with the homework, do the reviews ahead of time, and you should be fine. She is a tough and particular grader.
Ms. Vasiliva was a nice lady, but she had a very strong Ukrainian accent. This made it difficult to understand the material. There was a ton of homework, LOTS. The homework was often graded very slowly. As long as you do the homework, you should be able to pass.
She's nice enough as long as you don't do anything to annoy her, but she is downright unreasonable in her grading. It is very easy to know the material going into a test, get enough of the answers write to get a B, and fail the test because you didn't write down your steps the way she wants (I lost 15 points on my first exam this way).
Heavy accent. I'm sure SHE knows what she's talking about, but she also cannot communicate properly with the students asking questions. She will flip out about phones and quizzes. Makes the course a lot harder than it needs to be. Not approachable. BEWARE.
She is one of the hardest teachers I have ever had. Let me mention that she is also one of the toughest graders on earth. On the test, if you get the answer right, doesnt matter. If you didnt follow the steps in her liking you will get no points for it. HEAVY ACCENT, not approachable, doesnt answer students questions before class. DONT TAKE.
Dr. Vasileva is a great professor. Her notes on the board are really clearly written, and she takes time to answer questions. She is very nice and approachable. Go to her office hours. She is very specific in her grading, but is up front about it from the start. Study her notation. But, if you aren't willing to do the work, you won't pass.
Not worth it, find another professor especially if you struggle with math. She is straight-forward and knows mathematics very well. However, Irina is rude and unapproachable. She will single students out in class. Moves through the material very quickly and it is even harder to understand with the language barrier.
First off, she is very strict when it comes to grading. However, all math professors at UNM are. Her lectures are very useful so write everything she writes down. She is a sticker for correct procedure. She comes across very harsh, but if you show up to class and on time, she will answer your questions. F off about her accent, she can't help it.
Professor Vasileva is the best math teacher I've had. When teaching, she makes it extremely clear what her steps are and why she took them. She never rushes material and is very clear about what you need to do to get an A on the tests. She is strict on both grading and attendance, so show your work and go to class.
She doesn't explain much when doing problems and blows through them too fast for anyone to write down. Sometimes she just projects a scan of a problem that she completed over a year prior and just skims over it during the entire class period. She's more of a show-off example than a teacher. Accent is VERY difficult to understand. Self teaching req
The class is tough, but not really because of her. Tests use exact problems from the homework, so you MUST do all of your hw and study it like crazy. Not the toughest grader I've had. Does a lot of hw problems for you, you just have to make sure you understand. Doesn't like people going out for water or to bathroom which is a little unreasonable.
She does a good job @ explaining the concepts. Was open to students who attended her office hours. Also gave additional credit if you showed your work. For her online class, she had us do WebAssign which was due 3 times a week. You won't spend more than 1.5 - 2 hours on each assignment. Tests take up a large part of your grade, so you better study
This professor does not take responsibility for her actions. She does not work harder to help students as they would work harder to pass her class. I will never take a class with this professor again. When students are confused, Irina does not attempt to explain concepts in a different way. She merely repeats herself and expects comprehension.
You can not attempt to use outside sources to understand this class better as she only grades work if you follow her exact steps which often have very little explanation to them in the lectures and in her notes. She can be quite condescending when you have a question which makes it difficult to want to get help from her.
If you attempt to make an understanding of the concepts you will be learning on your own. Good luck on trying to have a D in this course. Apparently the math that she will only accept is the math she shows you. You better be more detailed in showing your work because even if you do it in a logical and easy to understandable way she will not accept.
If youre taking Irina for online classes i would highly recommend someone else. Theres no book for this course you go off of ALEKS. Each week youre expected to do between 10-15 topics. the only grade that matters is your final grade. If you need help she does not help, you MUST go to her zoom class to talk to a tutor she is of no use.
She is really hard to understand during lectures. She is very particular about how she wants your work turned in and she will only give you credit for the work. She doesn't explain the concepts very well or she complicates her explanation.
Irina is rude, unprofessional, and nearly impossible to work with. She is hard to understand, and she puts in little to no effort when you ask her for help. If anything, she complicates things more. She threatens to drop you if you miss class, and she is strict on how much you need to complete in ALEKS and when you need to complete it by.
Professor Vasileva is one of the greatest math teachers that I have ever had throughout my academic journey so far. Every concept in her class was not only clear, but it was also interesting. I found myself easily understanding everything. Definitely take this class. She does mark off points on tests, but it is completely warranted.
I suck at all math but Irina has been and always will be the best math teacher Ive ever had. Her lectures make me interested in math and. She is clear, humorous, engaging and anyone who complains about her is lame. She makes it clear how she grades things and shes not unfair. Anything less than 5 stars is treason.
Professor Irina really cares for her students. She helped me so much and explains things well. The class is pretty much self taught because its on ALEKS but the tutors and Irina were great at explaining things you don't understand. She also responds quickly to emails. She deserves a higher rating!
She uses webAssign for homework and some quizzes which is horrible. The ebook is very vague and doesn't explain steps well. Her accent is hard to understand. Her in-class quizzes are only two problems, but takes off points on for not doing it her way. She nags about things she doesn't like students to do and adds those into her calculations.
The support she has for students who have a full time job is very limited and will not meet with you if it's outside her zoom hours (12:30-1:30pm every friday) She has told the class "What do I care" if students complete their exam reviews or not. the homework on WebAssign is often not what we went over in class.
By far the best math professor I've had. She would introduce a concept and then practice for the rest of class, explaining clearly each step of the process. I thought the homework also helped me to cement the material. The tests were difficult, but she did really well at helping us review. She really knows the material.
The mandatory classroom attendance despite the course running off of ALEKS (a fully online program) felt like a total waste of time. If you are stuck in this course I can only say that Mathway will be your saving grace. Overall very hard to both plan and speak to her on any terms. I would not recommend. Be prepared for 12+ hours homework weeks.
Overall challenging, the teacher does not connect to the class. The homework on WebAssign is often not what we went over in class. The info on the tests is the info notes on canvas and rarely is related to the online web assignment course. Very rude and not friendly, hard if you personally need an involved teacher to succeed.
most annoying and rude professor known to man
She doesnt talk to you unless its about attendance or going into the next class.
Had for applied calc. She is very strict, wants things done her way, and a hard ass. It can be hard to get things if you dont get them "her" way. But shes also genuinely passionate about math and absolutely willing to work with you. She gave me a ton of extensions after midterms and I went to office hours and passed.
She is the best math professor I ever had. She has an accent I guess so you need to pay attention and go to class, her explanation are amazing, she explain every process in the problem she does and she gives a lot of examples, she will help you during the office hours to do problems you didn't understand and she is really clear when she explain.
Irina V. is a very challenging instructor. You have to be able to commit your full attention and put in the time to study outside of class. Her accent does make it a little bit harder, but it's not unintelligible. You'll survive if you already know material. She is very aggressive on distractions such as late entry, phones, and interruptions.
worst
Have had Irina a couple of times now. She is very strict but she is a great professor. Her lectures are very clear and she really explains the concepts well. She makes it very clear what will be on the tests and quizzes and does tons of example problems just like the ones she will put on there. She is very helpful at her office hours.
Irina is probably the worst calc teacher I've taken. She will drop you from the class if you miss more than 2 days, and will mark you absent if tardy. You will get marked down in notation and get marked down if you don't solve the problem the way she wants it.
Studying using homework or in-class work was futile as exam material typically questioned unfamiliar concepts.
If the reviews are scaring you off, it's because she's just too good! I have never taken any Trig before this class, and I got a 96 on the final! If you show up and take your notes and ask questions she will plainly explain to you. Super old-fashioned! Do your work, be respectful, be timely. I wish she would teach all my math courses.
This lady is a little tough because her class is very lecture heavy, if you miss a class you miss a lot of content but I've taken this class with someone else before and Irina was so much better. She is very direct and answers any question you have. This class is difficult in general, it is not the professors fault.
Vasileva is excellent. She frequently points out common mistakes students make and how to avoid them, and is extremely helpful during office hours. Be on time, don't use your phone during class, go to every class, and you'll be fine. There is one homework assignment and one quiz a week, four exams which are just like the homework. 3-5 hours / week.
Not the best but not the worst. She grew on me. Hard to get a good grade but she knows her stuff. I guess she moves kinda fast but she covers material well. I felt like she would use some hard questions for tests. She works out many examples. Go to class, pay attention. I only did like half the homework tbh, the class is manageable. Trig is hard.
Irina was a good professor overall. This was an online class so I didn't interact with her much. She gives online and written homework, two tests with an online and written component, and the final exam which is 25% of the total grade. If you put in the recommended time a week preparing for class, an A is doable but hard to achieve.
tough course but very do-able. Irina is strict but really does care about her students. She has a little accent but teaches very clear and I didnt have a problem with it. She is always available during office hours. Dont let the reviews scare you off, she is really great. Be sure to review algebra prior! Show up to learn and you will do fine
Shes rude and not easily approachable.
Irina knows Calculus inside and out but she teaches it so fast! I couldn't even write the notes as fast as she wrote them, much less fully understand them! Luckily we had a textbook that I would refer to when I got lost. Her accent is very strong and her voice is very high-pitched. Make sure you have taken College Algebra prior to this class.
Irina knows her calculus inside and out, but be careful of taking her class if you're overly sensitive. I watched her berate my friend, a hyper-perfectionist who had just got her first exam grade below an 80, for being on her phone in class (texting her therapist for support) in front of the entire class. Avoid if you take things too personally.
Oh boy, this professor was my first experience with college in general. I took it first semester freshman year, and she has a HEAVY accent and isn't extremely clear about the topics. The only reason I did well was due to friends, and having taken calc in high school, I'd try and find another professor, it's doable, but be prepared to WORK HEAVILY
If you r thinking about taking this class she is very knowledgeable in calculus. she is very old school as well and she might have you only go based off her lectures. her grading is very detailed and she can mark points off if you didn't put the right symbols. Her class is hard and only requires basic calculator. If you want a challenge go to her.
All though she did try to be supportive at the beginning, whenever i would come into her office hours to ask about a problem she would treat me like im stupid. Once when she was helping me i used the calculator to divide a simple problem. And she went off on me saying this is why im failing, that i cant do it by myself. Bad Experience
Ive taken calculus before in high school if you know calculus this class is easy however if you so much use the wrong type of calculator(yes im serious)she will take your test away and give you a 0 if you do the homework and study you'll be fine however her final exam had a problem we had never covered in class do with that as you will
She's a sweet lady people give her a hard time due to her accent (which isn't thick). Show up, take notes, do homework, and you'll be fine. Honestly, if you only do the first 5 problems from each homework over and over you should be set. She likes to pull problems from either the lecture/homework. Know how to do the problem and label correctly.
She is rude and difficult to approach, absolutely no sympathy for students whatsoever. The course was graded by 80% exams/final and the other 20% was quizzes. So yea, graded based only on your ability to perform in the moment. Quizzes given on random class days during the first 10 minutes of class, easy to miss them if you're late to class.
