Her weekly quizzes have multiple correct answers, that often aren't found in the textbook or lectures. The mean for quizzes are often low and she goes on tangents in class instead of teaching and often goes off topic. She expects you to memorize the textbook and asks about the smallest details in midterms instead of the bigger theories and concepts

Make sure you attend class because some of the test content is based on slides she only presents in class (it is to check if you went/ paid attention in class.) Her quizzes are extremely difficult due to confusing wording and the answers being extremely similar. A lot of her quiz questions can not be found within the textbook or from lecture.

After the first lecture, I could not stand this lady. She phrases things that are so mundane to listen to+her material in lectures doesn't correlate to anything on exams. -rely on the textbook, however, her exam questions are based loosely on the material and on questions/answers she just 'expects' you to answer -doesn't prep you well for exams

Three midterms that are non-cumulative, which sounds nice but they are SUPER difficult, quizzes are nearly impossible to do good on, and the three assignments on APA are slightly 'easier' to do. This class is loaded with information and made to be super difficult for no reason. Gordon goes off topic often and doesn't elaborate on important topics.

Extremely hard to follow along in lecture, and the lecture slides are very confusing and pretty much impossible to understand. After taking notes on all the assigned textbook chapters and trying to comprehend her lecture slides, I find myself struggling to answer any of the test or quiz questions. She doesn't prepare you well for them at all.

Exams and quizzes I found unrelated to slides in lecture. My grade must have been pure luck as the average was C+ for an intro psychology course, would have dropped out if it was not a requirement. Professor Gordon is a very difficult person to work with, her lectures are entertaining but being in her class was a challenge. The quizzes are practically impossible to do even though they're open book. Avoid taking a class with her if possible! It's a GPA dropper for sure.

Extremely vague and difficult open book quizzes. Quiz due dates are are assigned at the beginning of the semester so many times they're due before she's done teaching the unit. Lectures feel like rants maybe she does this to keep the class engaged but it doesn't work at all since the material she covers only scratches the surface.

Gordon is a decent prof, but has a few issues. Canvas page is bad as there are no separate pages for assignments or lectures, resulting in missed deadlines. Deadlines are at inconvenient times, unlike other professors. Lectures are content heavy, often missing slides, making it hard to concentrate. She is funny & answers most questions asked.

Iris Gordan is constantly going on irrelevant tangents during lecture and is extremely anal. She is constantly changing due dates, the TAs express how she never communicates with them and somehow, without fail, she manages to connect the material of every lecture in a research methods class to autism. her opinions are also questionable at best.

She tries to have a quirky and funny personality but just comes off as weird. Her exams are not fair, she teaches a lot in class and expects you to read the textbook as well, which I did, but I still have no clue where her exam questions come from. She literally boasts about the written part of her exams having a 30% average. Quiz averages are 50%.

Great at lectures but they are hard to follow since she speaks so fast. Exams are so difficult: 50% textbook and 50% slides. Assignments' criteria are so broad yet the TAs marked them so hard? Still don't understand that part. Her grading system is good but exam-heavy which does not help. You basically teach yourself, and the content is DENSE.

I really wish I had listened to the people who told me not to take this class with her. Honestly just wait it out till summer to complete this course with a different professor as doing well on the exams is near impossible. Assignments are the only place you can aim to raise your grade. She talks very fast and tends to ramble and get off topic, she'll also try to trick you before your understanding has solidified. She'll also never admit shes wrong and if you ask her questions she tends to repeat what she just said and doesn't answer them at all.

I found the course overall not too hard BUT, Iris is not good. Her quiz questions have many errors and lack clarity. HER GRADING SCALE IS DIFFERENT! She says she does not scale, however, she uses her own cutoffs that makes it harder to get a high grade. A side note is that her humour is self-deprecating, I feel bad for her.

I am neurodivergent and the professor spent too long discussing autism/ADHD and "clinical" intervention therapies with autistic children. Overgeneralization, did not separate personality from diagnosis, patronizing undertones IMO, and class found some comments about autism humorous. She seems very passionate about what she teaches and she can be funny. However, her quizzes and exams are difficult, they do not really relate to the lectures or readings. Half the time your saying to yourself ''where was this in the notes/readings?''. Theres multiple answers that seem correct and its confusing when you get ur test back

Extremely inflexible and unclear in assignment instructions. Will take marks off for formatting errors that were not even specified in the instructions and is unwilling to reassess. TAs mark just as hard and it is impossible to meet the standard. Multiple choice questions are confusing. Save yourself and avoid at all costs.

Was by far one of the worst profs I've had at SFU. Talks more about autism, rape, sexual assault than the actual material. Contradicts what the textbook says. Exams were very difficult as what the textbook says is completely different from what her notes say and vice versa. Do not take any class with her if you can.

If you typically ignore RateMyProf ratings as I do, I encourage you to take heed to the 105 1-star ratings in Iris's collection. Lecture material and readings are incompatible and insufficient for success. Evidently considers herself a benevolent, capable instructor; I'm not sure whether she suffers from a lack of self-awareness, or of compassion.

The fact that the average for the quizzes was 45% that were mind you OPEN BOOK, should tell you a lot about how she manages this course. Her tests are all filled with misleading questions, and some of them blatantly contradict what the textbook or lecture says. If you try and correct her, she'll respond in the most passive-aggressive way possible.

Was failing the course because we were only graded through exams for awhile, when I asked if assignments would raise my grade, she didnt respond to the email, becuase I didnt refer to her as "Dr Iris Gordon". took 201 with her in spring 2023. truly the most traumatizing experience ive ever had in a class. run while u can. accuses students of cheating in front of the whole lecture, does not respond well to feedback, does not REPLY TO EMAILS, does not communicate with her teaching team. truly the blind leading the blind cus nobody knew what was going on.

She talks a lot during lectures, but it isn't clear what is actually important vs what she's adding for the sake of adding. Almost all test questions were super vague and difficult to understand. Answers on quizzes were sometimes affected by her opinions, which conflicted with the textbook. The quizzes were exclusively based on the textbook. Avoid.

Reading quizzes were horribly worded and she included answers based on what she believed is right, not what the textbook said even though it was a textbook-based reading quiz. Midterms were also confusing and contained information from the textbook, slides, and her lectures. However she contradicts with the textbook a lot, so you have no clue.

Class average was a D, does not care, skipped class for 1 month in a row due to a strike going on in a different union, cares more about her clinical psychology job, then teaching psychology. Avoid if possible, horrible and her midterms and quizzes are not based off of the lectures/readings etc., it is just randomized, information worded horrible.

Quizzes are impossible to get 100% on. Overall grades are hidden till the end of the semester. Goes off topic a lot and does not give very good answers to questions asked in class. Sounds very aggressive when she talks as well. drinks vodka on zoom. You can tell yourself it gets better but it does not.

She will give you vague and ambiguous instructions for assignments, and then criticize you for doing things wrong (*cough anything to do with the research project*). Textbook reading quiz questions make no sense and negate reading the textbook at all. So unclear/confusing. Iris Gordon is the bane of my existence.

Horrible professor who would grade your assignments hard, even the comments sometimes will confuse you. Changing everything on the rubric or what she wants us to do. Deadlines are always changing, quizzes and her wordings are ambiguous (several answers seem to exist for a single vague question). Confused about the final project throughout the whole term. A genuinely curious question: How are we to work on a single paper as a group when we started with different hypotheses, methods and results? Still confused

I'm mentally distressed because of her quizzes. No amount of textbook knowledge can get you full marks

lectures don't help you, she's extremely disorganized, quizzes are tricky and answers are based on what she deems correct. students & TA's were in constant confusion as deadlines were constantly changing and instructions were so vague that everyone would interpret them differently. i have never been more confused or exhausted in a class.

RUN!!! Iris is actually UNETHICAL & she has caused me psychological trauma that i will endure for the rest of my life. Instructions ALWAYS changing/unclear. she is such a passive aggressive prankster. all TA's suspiciously ran away & ghosted us 2 weeks before final...we were left with no support, trauma, and the need for therapy. What a joke.

How should I even start this rate. THIS COURSE IS THE DEFINITION OF "HUH???!!!" You will be confused all the way through this whole semester, and when u think u finally got it....... SIKE NO U DIDN'T! Be careful for gr projects, read the book, AND look back on the quiz questions for the exam (TRUST). RUN FOR THE HILLS PLS SAVE URSELF!!!!!!!!

So utterly shameful of her to change an INDIVIDUAL PROJECT into a GROUP PROJECT last minute and have everyone scramble at the end.

She pushed back so many assignments and still made us all finish them when we were working on our final project. Should not be teaching. Don't take.

changed criteria, instructions, and due dates so much that we had a paper due, our final project due, and a final exam due all in the same week. don't get me started on the horrible project that shape-shifted more than a skin-walker

I had 102 with her last year and it was just as bad as this course. Very unorganized and that made everyone feel very stressed. While these reviews are reflective of how her students feel about her, I encourage everyone to submit their course experience survey to let Admin know of your thoughts and feelings as well.

just completed the exam and lifted the reason for 70% of my stress this semester. do yourself a favour and just wait for another prof to teach the course. NONE of her instructions were clear and she changed the FINAL PAPER CRITERIA 2 weeks before it was due. Also the due dates are dependent on your tutorial timing

Worst psychology professor at SFU. Doesn't communicate with TAs, changes her mind for assignments every damn second, and has the most ambiguous quiz questions ever. Assignments and research project are hard to complete when even she doesn't know what she wants. Don't even get me started on all the mistakes she makes, claiming it's an "IT issue."

I took both 102 and 201 with her and YIKES. Terribly disorganized, pushes back due dates until the final week, contradicts the textbook on textbook reading quizzes, doesn't communicate with TAs (who all mysteriously vanished in the final 2 weeks?), and can't make her mind up. 201: Disregard the study guide she gives you and just study the quizzes.

All the TAs disappeared a week before finals ended?? gives us a study guide for the final the but quizzes were a lot more helpful?? whole class was super messy... and she made some very... bad comments over the semester.

For the love of god Iris needs to be stopped from ever teaching another class in her life. TA personally told me that the teaching staff had no clue what was happening and another TA confessed she got a 4/10 on the open book online quizzes. Seriously the most ridiculous class, so unorganized, sent me on a depressive spiral. Run.

She changes the due date for a lot of the quizzes and assignments, we end up having to hand in 3 quizzes, 1 assignment and the final project all in 1week (and a finals in the same week as the final project). All the 1 star reviews are NOT JOKING, don't take any class with her.

All TAs disappeared a week before the finals, I hate this class so much. Every 1 star reviews are true, take it seriously.

Changed the criteria for our final project 2 weeks before it was due and NEVER told the TA's [it stressed tf out of everyone]. She squeezed assignment 4, the final project and final exam into the last week of class. Her quizzes were impossible to get a decent grade on. My TA also disappeared in the second to last week of the semester.

Lectures are biased and based completely on her opinions, which were sometimes just not correct. She contradicts the textbook and basic knowledge of psychology, and her quizzes are impossible. Avoid.

DO NOT TAKE! she is not awful as a person im sure she is okay, and she is generally willing to give extensions if you need more time. HOWEVER ur garde is heavily dependent on tests and exams which are impossible! no matter how much u study you will be confused it feels like a trick. shes more of a researcher than a teacher to be honest.

If you want to stay sane, avoid Iris Gordon at all costs. My mistake was thinking it would be best to take this course with her to get this class over with asap, than having to take it in a future semester later on. Now that I have finished Psyc 201W with Iris, I would have much rather waited for another professor to teach this course.

If I could give her a 0 I would have. Horrible teacher who believes that only she is right and not the textbook.

Please don't take anything with her I beg of you. Her quizzes make no sense. she changes instructions for things, and then acts like she never changed them at all. I'm a person who thinks she can tough out bad profs, but this one is REALLY NOT WORTH IT. save your time and sanity

The reviews are telling the truth... do not take a class with her. I thought how bad could it be? Turns out... incredibly so. Everything about the class is uncoordinated. She might seem nice first class but don't fall for it!

literally terrible, worst prof i have ever had. inappropriate in lectures and quiz/test material was not based off of any of the course material or readings

never written a review for any of my profs at SFU, but the organization of this class is seriously lacking. quizzes are open book but super hard, and some answers are found on pages that aren't listed on the required reading pages? very confusing. some questions 0.5 marks should be given, but not. i'm sure she's nice but not the best at teaching

Lot of content is subjective, and "correct" answers depend on her opinion, rather than what the textbook says. Very confusing, and makes it hard to study for her exams.

Horrible would be an understatement. Rude. Disrespectful. Does not care about any disability accessibility, and has made fun of individuals with certain issues in her lectures.

This class felt like the equivalent of two courses. Was not clear about grading criteria, would make the quizzes impossible to get a good grade on and contradicted the textbook. TA's ditched us at end of sem and would answer "idk" to questions asked. We never got our final assignment back and I got a b+ but have no idea how. Skip lectures

Reviews are right and I deeply regret not listening to these earlier.Not only is her class poorly delivered and disorganized, but she is also not fit to be a prof. She tries to act hip and cool by swearing in every sentence that she speaks. I was severely uncomfortable every lecture (and this has never happened to me before). Worst prof I ever had

Iris Gordon once said to the lecture (after dismissing those who wanted to leave early) "I hope those who left early get yeast infections" not sure how this lady is a prof, but here we are.

The toughest instructor since the dawn of mankind. I learned to not expect her to be understanding of whatever tough situation I'm in as she is totally indifferent and uncaring about her students' success. She replies to emails once in a blue moon & never checks canvas emails. She ruined psychology for me after having gotten stuck with her twice.

Terrible professor. First class I showed up to she had a condescending tone towards the students answering the questions. She also swore during the lectures which I am okay with but it was very excessive, almost unnecessary. Thought she was having a bad day or something so I came back the next few classes but things didn't improve.

Professor is the only reason the course is hard. Condescending. Quizzes poorly made, trick questions, spelling errors rampant. Easy content. Presented dated misinformation on subjects of neurodivergence (autism, adhd) that probably made some students in the room uncomfortable.

Avoid/drop! Do whatever you need to do to not be in her class. Uploaded slides are not the same she shows in class. She is condescending to anything she doesn't agree with. Unfair to students. Unclear deadlines and criteria. Final exam is a joke as in u could skip ALL semester n still write the final np. She nit-picks DSM and theories

Really awful teaching that made it very hard to actually want to learn. I am a dedicated enough student that puts in the work with my studies but this class was nearly impossible for me to learn anything even if I attended every single lecture. Would not take this professor again.

Gordon's lectures start off ok but are overshadowed by her ego and unsupported opinions with no credited sources just her beliefs. Final exam was a joke—attending class felt unnecessary. Group projects presentations disorganized, she made groups change topics just two days before presenting due to her NOT LIKING certain topics. Avoid at all cost!
