snooze-ville, i almost fell asleep every class and he was very unclear about everything
Irv is a great professor and very experienced in his field. If you are willing to learn and have an open mind, take him. If you ask him a question he'll answer it well, but you have to show an interest in the subject or he won't give you the time you need.
HE DOSN"T TEACH! You come to class and read out of a book, then write a page summery, every day! You have four essays graded and he dosn't tell you exactly what he expects. It's horible. He gives you fridays off, yet I suggest you come in and have him read through your essays before you turn them in. It's the only way you can figure what he wants!
This was the most ridiculous class I have ever taken. He didn't ever teach! We just read out of a book and wrote summaries; he left the room and never once lectured us. It was so awful. Do not take this class at the end of the day. I almost fell asleep every single day.
Irv's class was a complete waste of time. He gave little to no information about what he expected from students. He didn't even have a list for the papers he wanted in the portfolios he requires for a final. He has no passion for teaching and never really taught anything. This class killed any love I had left for English composition.
I loved this class. Watched some insightful films. Irv rocks!
I really like this teacher, but if you're a slacker you won't.Otherwise,he is a very caring guy.I liked having a real writter as a teacher. He knows writting.In-class work helped me with my busy schedule. He was very helpful, and I learned a lot.One of the best english teachers I've had at this school. And a great guy too.
Irv Broughton IS the best professor I have had during my two years at Spokane Falls Community College. He genuinely cared about his students. I love film and he saw my passion for it and encouraged me to not only create the greatest film I've ever made, but to sign up for his ind. study course, which led to my job at a major production company.
He is very easy going, nice man. Basically you need to show up to class and do the assignments and occationally put in class participation. I would take another class again from him!
I love this teacher! He is very down to earth and has a kind manor. He is there to teach and does a great job. I learned how to read film in a completely different way while taking his class. I'd have and will recommend him to someone who wants to take a class from a very intellectual and worldly teacher.
One of my favorite professors. Very professional. Not only a teacher he has several films to his credit. A+
He is a great teacher and doesn't give useless assignments. I enjoyed his class.
As English Language Learner, Irv kept his high expectations for me and at the same time accommodated my needs as a learner. His teaching style is inventive, original, and student center. If you are looking for an instructor who will broaden your intellect and expand your higher level thinking, then this is the class and the teacher for you.
Irv is the best teacher ever. He is my favorite teacher. He is like a tree of knowledge that has enriched countless lives. I recommended everybody to take him for Hum 141 or English. He is always there for you when you needed his help. He is someone you can count on. He always cares about his job, about his student, and it's rare to find like him.
Irv is a wonderful, excellent, smart, and awesome teacher and person I have ever met. He wants the best for his students. He was like a friend to all of us not just a teacher. He make learning fun. Before, Intro. film wasn't my favorite subject but now it's my favorite sub. because of this awesome teacher. and I'm going to take English 102 with him.
Fabulous teacher!! Kind hearted...and its very clear that he enjoys..and truely loves what he does. I had a lot of respect for him, he feels more like a friend than a professer. His class is amazing...the films outstanding. Enjoyed taking his class very very much!
All you do is come to class and read a passage, then write a page summary. Then you observe nature and write a page about that. Plus,he dosn't tell you exactly what he expects. You also need to come in and have him read your essays before you turning them in.I didnt the first time and he marked me down for it. i wish I had taken a different class!
He is the best teacher at Spokane Falls Community College. He is the best. I like his teaching style. I like him so much.
He's a really good guy, however he is a little unorganized. He does give a pretty good assignment calender, but he also gives random observations. He gives helpful writing critiques in class.A lot of time is spent on Workshop days.Try to go as often as you can, he doesn't like people skipping his class, and he will remember when you do. He's funny.
umm this guy is boring. i mean rely boring it takes a lot for me to not like a teacher but this guy did it for me. his tangents are super boring and he spent more time talking about his own works than teaching the class given it is a creative writing class but still i don't care how many screen plays you have written especially the 12th time
Out all the classes that I've taken this class I struggled with the most. You wouldn't think a film class would be so challenging but it was because of all the things we had to memorize.
Great Teacher! He knows what he is talking about an very smart! If you show interest in learning he shows interest in teaching! What a concept!!! If you want to learn to write, take his class.
TERRIBLE! so boring. irrelivant lectures. unorganized. confusing grading system. didn't make the expectations clear at all! Take someone else.
Great guy really cares a lot about his students and is passionate about his work couln't ask for more would take again!!!
Irv knows english! Hey may not clearly define everything in the course but this is college people! He will always take a minute to help a student outside class. Overall, if you care about the class, he will help you learn. If you show disrespect, he will not show you respect.
Professor Broughton was my inspration, I attended the film production classes in 1994-95, I have been working film since 1995 and have been an Assisant Director in four films.
Enjoyed the class quite a bit, very interesting documentaries and the end project was really fun. Some people complain about the TWO tests, and I do not understand why. They are EASY as long as you write what he writes and tells you. He throws you NO curve-balls on the tests and is straight-forward about what will be on them. Experienced teacher!
Worst teacher ever. Goes on and on about himself, name drops "important people" he's met. Doesn't expect anything from his students. You could sleep through his class and get 4.0. In fact, you'd be better off sleeping through it, you'll get more out of it.
If you want to listen to a teacher brag about being published (which many at The Falls are, but don't brag) then take this class. If you want to pay to do something you could have on your own (i.e. work on your novel without ever learning anything new) then take this class. Calling him a teacher is an insult to real teachers.
One of the best professors at the college in my opinion. Sure his class is easy but he is a really nice guy and will have a conversation with you. Some of his stories are amazing and I'm convinced all the people who give him a bad review aren't going for an English major because most of us who are love him.
He's a really cool teacher. At times he doesn't make sense with his assignments. But he really knows what he's talking about when it comes to english. He doesn't like people skipping his class so try not too as much as possible. If you have an interest to learn he will like you and be willing to help you. Overall awesome guy.
need to show up to watch movies. he left for two weeks for film festival..idk what that was about. this was winter qtr. his tests are pretty hard..must study quite a bit. movies are pretty good. black and white. dont take for an easy a. very nice to talk too. good conversation.
Seems nice, but could really care less about students. A total bore to listen to, he will go off on politics or something when he's supposed to be teaching about documentary film making. Ends every sentence with "..you know...". Brags daily about his minor achievements. He'd obviously rather work somewhere else. I learned nothing from this class.
I think that Mr. Broughton was a great English teacher. He is a very smart man and knows what he is talking about. I learned a lot from his class. It was not a hard class to pass!
Irv is an awesome teacher. As long as you show an interest in learning he will go to great lengths to help you out. He is very relaxed about things, and empathizes well with students. My last quarter of school, I realized I was one short class to graduate, and halfway through the quarter he let me join a class and talked with me about assignments o
Irv is a super nice guy and as long as you don't try to argue or mouth off to him, you'll be fine. Take good notes from everything he writes on the board for the tests(there's only two) and do the film project, it's easy but kinda time consuming so don't slack it off until the last couple weeks. He's not unfairly critical of them. Fun class!
Seriously most boring class I've ever taken. He drones on all day and my best friend and I refer to him as Professer Binns (the boring ghost teacher from Harry Potter). He's not a bad guy but if you want to learn don't take this class.
LOVE!!!!! Awesome teacher!!! very wise!!!
Most boring and pointless class I've ever taken. Every day in this class makes you want to bang your head against the wall. Irv speaks slowly, brags about being published, name drops constantly, and has a fascination with war and politic. He has no respect for people who have views that differ from his own. Never teaches and I learned nothing.
Very boring! Half the time I never listened to him and passed his class. Make sure you take notes in Film but in English he doesnt make much sense. He really does talk about himself A LOT. Pretty much any chance he gets he brags about himself... Dont recommend!
Good fair teacher. his classes are informative but not too dificult, good guy to talk to and has a very intersting life story and tons of experience in his field.
Good fair teacher. his classes are informative but not too dificult, good guy to talk to and has a very intersting life story and tons of experience in his field.
As far as i'm concerned he's a terrible teacher. Easy A if that's what you want, but you'll still have to listen to him ramble on about what ever he's thinking about at the moment. Not informative. Always talks about himself. Boring and very unclear in his instructions and lectures/ramblings. Worst teacher i've had period
Irv is the man! Such an excellent teacher. Always had great stories that were relevant to the course material. I plan on taking another course with him! Excellent dude.
He's very monotone but extremely passionate about what he's teaching. His tests are very easy if you pay attention to the notes, but he tends to ramble. Attendance is very important. All in all an average teacher.
I liked taking his class. If you asked him to review a paper- then actually make the changes he recommends, you'll get a good grade. He is fair, but doesn't take crap from mouthy disrespectful students. Also knowledgeable about a lot of subjects, but you can tell his passion is the humanities and he does it for love, not money. A trait I respect
Irv Broughton has been a great teacher. I really enjoy his nature of teaching and the material is awesome. A really fun class. He is easy to talk to for questions or any complications. It is my favorite class since starting school 3 quarters ago. I would say definitely don't miss out on this class.
He is very helpful and gives amazing lectures. When I ask him about the movies and lecture notes or papers, he always explains to me in detail. Also, he gives extra credit opportunities. His assignments are time-consuming, but you feel accomplishment when you finish them. I learned so many things in his class. He is a wonderful professor.
Easy class if you show up
An entire class period he discussed corruption of one side of the political spectrum, a classroom is not the place to spew personal opinions. A student asked a relevant question and was given an unprofessional tone. Then, he began raising his voice at a girl with an opposing view. No respect for students. Not a political class. Do not take
Likes to talk and talk. He is a good instructor, easy grader, really passionate about films but he will often get sidetracked about another topic or a festival he went to. Easy to get along with, show up and pretend you care and you'll do fine.
His lectures are as dry as unbuttered toast. Unless you want an easy A, you're better off finding a different teacher. Attendance and minor assignments have very little effect on your grade should you do poorly; 99% of your grade comes from big papers, on which his grading is incredibly lenient.
This was such a boring class. We literally spent every class period watching movies. You think that would be easy huh? Except for the fact that their are two grades. Your grade is based off of two test scores. The tests are not easy. Don't take this class if you can avoid it.
This man (because he doesn't act like a teacher most of the time) will drone through a whole class on occasion. He often does this by choosing tangents (the Republican agenda is a popular one) and droning on, aware that the class has tuned out. When I'd participate, as in a discussion, he'd be confused, then continue, heedless of my wish to learn.
Had him for a Film class that was writing intensive and I swear we only wrote like 5 paragraphs total over the whole quarter. Dont take him for English or people say he is bad, that's because his passion is film! Show up and it's an easy A
PROS: Low-word count assignments (200 words or less), few tests, walked through notes and book CONS: Back-tracked constantly, talked about his past incessantly (seriously, so much obscure name dropping), and he was uber forgetful. He assigned a paper at the beginning and never spoke of it again until after it was due. No date on paper, either.
Irritating. He drones on about his past. once spent an entire class period where the assignment was to write a question you want to ask him about HIS screen writing. He then read them all aloud and basically inflated him own ego. He's an easy grader though (if your taking film).
This professor on the the first day got up and left. I was unable to find another 102 class so I stayed in the class, barely went. He gave us papers that weren't on his syllabus because he felt like it. If you feel like it skip class, take note of what you need to do and turn everything in at the end of the quarter. Get away with a "b"
Irv was one of my favorite professor's. Although very monotone, if there was something you didn't understand he would take the time to explain it. If you gave your time to find the answer, he would give his time. Sometimes he rambled on, but it was very light hearted. The more you involve yourself in the class the better the grade. Great professor!
Not a bad guy, just a horrid teacher. Lots of papers with very little instruction on how to write them. He says attendance is mandatory but if you have no desire to go and do nothing for an hour, you can still make it out with around an A-B if you do good on the papers.
Gives good feedback on assignments, and isn't a particularly difficult class. However, if you're looking for a class that's even mildly interesting, this professor is not for you. He tends to drone on heavily about obscure quotes and his own past, and he has an extremely monotonous voice. He also tends to trail off towards the end of his sentences.
Worst teacher ever, literally if you have any brains dont waste your time with this goofball lookin dude
Honest grading, extra credit opportunities and allows extensions on turn-ins. Mr Broughton is a character but in no respect a bad one, he provides the classroom with insider knowledge within the realm of film. If you're an honest student you will not have any issues whatsoever.
Broughton is a pretty relaxed professor. Most of the classes he has you doing in class reading, hardly any lectures. Make sure to do all the papers in and turn them in on time or dont plan on passing the class. Gives good and honest feedback on papers. Pretty relaxed class.
Irv is a good dude, do the work and be cool and you can do whatever you want.
When he did his introductory video for the online class, he sounded pretty boring. Im actually glad it ended up being online class due to covid. The only thing Im a little irked about is that he assigned an extra credit assignment. I followed what was needed and it was pretty simple list the movies weve watched and he still gave me a zero.
I contacted Irv in the middle of the quarter to see if I could transfer to his class after learning that the class I was taking was I needed, and English 102 was. Unlike any other professor, Irv graciously accepted my transfer. I was able to complete all my assignments and get a 91.2 in his class. He is a great professor. I highly recommend him!
Professor Broughton is an outstanding educator whose expertise are made available to those that wish to utilize them. Grades are proportionate to the quality of student work. Clear expectations for the course allow students to achieve the grade they are willing to work for.
He's kinda meh. I give a positive review because honestly, his uninterestingness may make him better than most other options. No busy work, and he comments on all submissions. No super long papers. Communicating with him is a bit difficult because sometimes he makes no sense but it's not a hard class
Good class, learned quite a bit from it. Although prof, Irv gave little instructions on what was needed for the assignment and didnt give much detail. Had to ask a lot of questions through canvas and that helped a bit.
Lots of papers to write, as well as writing in the discussion boards, which I would consider fine for a writing intensive class. At one point he created an assignment and made it due the day previous. Overall, he took a hands-off approach and let us work and turn in assignments at any point.
Professor Broughton English 102 class was the easiest class. I would ask him simple questions then and there about essays. On paper 4, I asked him how much he wanted on the sixth page for example half or quarter. He said, Ill cut you some slack on the sixth page. I got As on most of the assignments. He only checks for grammar!
He has composed a class that gives clear perspective to the film industry as well as film structure. I learned so much about styles, genres, angles and how they all lead the viewer to the director's goal. Further, with his English background he refines your writing in his feedback holding you to a healthy and valuable standard. He is so genuine!
Definitely recommend for Engl 102! The work load is reasonable and he gives thoughtful feedback on each assignment. As long as you turn in your work you will end up with a good grade.
There were essays, but they weren't too long for me to get done. There are reading discussion boards over a chapter. There wasn't a lot of homework and I liked his teaching. He wants you to succeed and become a better writer! I recommend! I got a 3.9!
Took this class to fill in some credits during summer and ended up dropping early. Irv is insanely opinionated and will take it out on your grade if you don't feel the way he does about certain movies. Requires a ton of writing, sometimes three essays due a week, just overkill for an intro class about movies.
Professor Broughton is an amazing professor. He is very intellectually driven, and super knowledgeable about his line of work. His writing prompts are always very clear and also creative. He only requires about 2 assignments per week. Along with 4 essays total, within the span of the course. Would definitely recommend his class for anyone online!
He was very caring about circumstances outside of class that could affect your ability to do your work on time. As long as you had good communication with him /got the work done within a reasonable time frame he was very understanding. The class was pretty easy just a lot of writing but thats to be expected as its a writing intensive class.
I had a fantastic experience with this class! I took the online version of ENG 102, and while it involved a lot of writing, I really enjoyed the assignments through out the course. The workload was manageable, with about one to two assignments per week. If your looking for simple english credit this is the professor to take.
Fantastic professor, I recommend him. Straightforward feedback and very communicative. His class is made to help you grow at your own pace. Prompts are loose and allow you to be creative but aren't without rules.
Great professor. Solid guy, manageable papers, good sense of humor, interesting assignments.
He was a chill teacher, and it was an easy class. There is nothing much more to say about it. I would take the class again.
Irv is one of the best instructors I've had by far. He isn't just a great teacher, he corrects in a way that's both constructive and inspiring. His empathy and passion for what he does are evident in every lesson. He's approachable, responds to emails quickly, and makes learning an engaging experience. I truly appreciate his kindness and approach.
Was frequently unclear on instructions, explanatory videos were clearly first take and confusing if they even loaded at all, and would take days to respond to emails of high importance and would respond condescendingly. The only positive I have for him is that he would give out 100s easily. Needs to take some classes about computers, probably.
