Accomodating prof, but his power point presentations are extrememly vague, boring, and unhelpful. Lectures are sometimes random, fast, and unclear. To do well on test be sure to do the practice questions - they are alomst identical to the test itself.
His lectures are very boring and his powerpoint is even worse. The only reason you should go to class is to hand in a paper. Other than that, memorize the text books and youll ace the tests.
One of the best prof's that I have had. Always willing to help his students, very accomodating, and makes one think. His power point is very different, but more interesting than most.
Fantastic knowledge of South Africa and African religions. Really good prof. Helpful Power Point - he only uses it for pictures and maps.
Very good clear teacher who really knows his subject.
I came into the class clueless, but he seemed to expect you to have a background in religion. I found his lectures to be interesting, but his powerpoint slides seemed pointless. I stopped going to class and still got a B+.
I hated humanities courses untill I took this one! Very interesting, he only uses his pp slides to show pictures which is very interesting. Overall a great proff, i highly recommend him!
Very good use of pp presentations to show pictures of the people he talks about - like Marx and Feuerbach. He also uses maps and diagrams well. His tests are based on the lectures and readings - very fair if you do the work.
I hate powerpoints but in this class they were done with some thought behind them. I also enjoyed speaking with the TA in this class. Good class, better prof.
Dr. Hexham is great! He's totally adorable and fun. He's got a tonne of interesting anecdotes that make the class more engaging. I would take more classes with him if I could.
I don't know if it was the prof or the course itself, but this was one of my best first year courses. He crams a lot of information into every lecture without fracturing the flow, which was awesome. I learned a lot, and got a really good mark. I hear he's a tougher marker with higher level courses, though.
Hexham ROCKS!! I've had him for a couple courses and his classes kick! he's interesting and extremely fair! this is one professor that truely understands the life of the university student!!
Professor Hexham is great! He's really helpful and approachable not to mention a really nice guy, his lectures are interesting and he explains the material well. I think he is a really fair marker and enjoys the subjects he teaches!
Fair, no "impossible" test questions. Easy to approach and helpful.
He is one of the best profs I've ever had. His class is exceptionally informative and completely changed the way I think about the world. It is definitely worth it to go to class, and to talk to him through email/office hours. Exam is given as a practice exam before the exam date, all you have to do is look up the answers and you'll get an A+
I found him to be horribly dull. He's a very nice man. I didn't attend class at all, though...he posted sample tests which were identical to the actual exam. You needed class material to get the answers, but they can also be found on the internet.
Excellent Professor. Dr. Hexham effectively encourages a passion for learning and fostering a greater knowledge and interest in the parallels and distinctions between Religion and Politics. He is also highly knowledgeable and incredibly helpful. Take as many classes as you can with Dr. Hexham and you shan't regret it!
This was an easy class. The prof. showed the material effectively. A little dull at times and hard to pay attention. Overall a good class. practise questions for midterms are provided.
He is a easy teacher. He has a different teaching style than other professor. If you do want to learn, then he'll make the effort of guiding you in the right direction. If you don't want to learn, his test are easy. All test multiple choice other than the final exam (Have a choice of essay or MC).
There is no exams, but have 3 writing assignments and 1 presentation. No final exam. He marks fairly, as long as the material relates to religion somehow. This is the second class I have taken with him and you can tell he does like his field. If you're for an easy course, then take his courses.
If you want an easy class, take it. If you want to learn something, avoid it like the plague. This teacher is listed under theology, but I did not sign up for theology, i signed up for a secular religious studies class... and was sorely dissapointed. very christian biased, and you have to buy his books from him directionly, that's just wrong
Oh man, I could go on forever about this guy. I'm in this class right now and all we learn about is how Christianity influences the study of religion and random names and dates of random people that we never really learn anything about. If you're looking to gain some major insight on religion DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, you'll be disappointed.
Im about halfway through this course, and I still have no idea what we're even supposed to be learning, and I feel as though Ive learned nothing. All the lectures are is frantically typing down random names and dates, so it's hard to tell what we're actually supposed to study. I wouldnt recommend this class at all, take a religon with more focus.
Irv is an amazing prof. His voice is super annoying but after a few weeks he really grows on you. Easiest class (by far) in my 2 years at university. Pretty interesting course too, if you want to learn about Christianity and the study of religion. No final, just midterms (you already have the answers) and one paper based on his book. Recommended.
Once you figure out that he gives you everything in advance the course is super easy. Goes super fast through lecture material at points so make sure that you are ready to write like a mad-man. Overall a good class.
Love his accent, very interesting and knowledgeable professor
A really great prof. He's really helpful, not that you'll need help he gives you everything you need to do well. The tests for this course are amazingly easy as long as you attend class.reminded me of highschool he doesn't tolerate cell phone use during class and if he can tell you're on your laptop playing games he'll call you out on it. easy A+
Easy prof if you are in it for the learning dont take his class. Smart guy but very monotone and boring to listen to. His sample midterms are identical to the exam easy a+ if you find the answers prior to the exam. If you are looking for an easy mark take his class!
Looking for the easiest class at UofC? This is it. I attended 4 classes total all semester and got an A+. Seemed like a really nice prof, but it just wasn't mandatory to go to class. Take this and you'll have 5 courses in what seems like a 4 course semester. Highly recommended for a GPA booster.
He's nice and extremely friendly, but boring would be an understatement. Very easy class as he gives you the test questions in advance. Easy class and easy marks, though he likes to go off-tangent and puts lots of emphasis on Christian based religions.
I took rels 205 when Hexam's practice questions were the exact same questions on the exam. I?ve heard recently that has changed that. So I would be cautious thinking this is an easy A. I found the material very uninteresting and it was hard to pay attention, but he is a refreshing character and is very passionate. Great professor!
TImes have changed! Last year people complained about how easy the course was to the dean so he no longer gives you the questions in advance. This class went from one extreme to the other and the majority of the people failed the first test. It is no longer an easy class
everyone said how easy this class was,but things are different now! The class is not engaging what so ever..so you need to listen and take notes fast. the second exam was all based on his lectures..and not on the book at all..which I didnt find helpful since the lectures werent that helpful to begin with! not an easy A..need to take GOOD notes
Everyone said this course was so easy. THINGS HAVE CHANGED. He is an extremely hard marker. I'm a B+/A- average and I failed both of the tests. I even studied. Completely unfair and hard marker. Lectures are extremely boring and not interesting. AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS.
Extremely kind and helpful. Willing to go the extra mile to explain something IF YOU ASK FOR HELP. Marks fairly, not too hard if you follow instructions and put some effort in. His lectures may lose focus from time to time but he is knowledgable and clearly has a passion in the subject. Full of fun facts.
He is an very understanding and helpful professor. I have taken his class multiple times and will do so again.
Irving Hexham is an excellent prof. He gives you questions to study for that would be similar to the exams. The final assignment seemed like a lot of work, but I found it extremely interesting and fun to do. He also did a little magic show near the end of classes, which was great. Highly recommended
EASIEST CLASS EVER. Lectures were miserable and absolutely useless. Rambles on about nothing. Easy marker but TA is difficult. The texts were useless. 1 book review, 1 oral pres, 2 tweets, 2 blogs, & final paper. Most of his lectures on Islam were questionable as well as his sources... still easy!
The professor is knowledgable, polite, and very helpful. As long as you attend class, and do the readings, you'll do very well. He also keeps his lectures interesting, which is great in a department that can at times be very dry. RELS 205 is a fantastic introduction to an interesting field of study.
Dr. Hexham's great! Lectures can be a bit disorganized, but overall interesting material in which he is clearly competent. A really genial prof
Professor Hexham is an amazing professor! very easy to understand and is very knowledgeable!!! Despite being an English major I took several of his classes!!!!
Amazing professor! Classes were very interesting! Would defiantly take a class with him again!!!
Professor Hexham is GREAT! If you are interested in Religious Studies you will learn so much from him - he has a wealth of knowledge and many relevant firsthand experiences. The assignments are fun and easy, and the multiple choice tests were fair. The final assignment seemed daunting (10 pgs) but it turned out to be easy. Great course & prof!
Very nice man. Unclear expectations for assignments as there is no outline for them, you will have to end up asking him for direction. Nice thing is though that assignments aren't on his lectures! I only went to a few lectures and was an easy A. No midterm or final which was great. Put effort into your assignments and you will do well.
Not a great lecturer but a pretty interesting guy. Lecture isn't really mandatory, exams were fair/easy - just memorizing his practice questions. Doesn't give you answer keys but all the answers are in the textbook, generally in the order the sample q's are in. Relies on his website a lot so get really familiar with that!
AWESOME PROF!!!! By far the best prof I have had thus-far. I recommend him to anyone and everyone. He loves what he does and you can definitely tell. He's very inspirational and wants everyone to do well in his course.
For a class I had 3 times a week I went to maybe 6 or 7 and am getting all 80-90s. The lectures are not important at all. The blogs are easily graded also. The only lame thing was having to read 382700 page book about some Nazi guy who which was really boring. I read at 400-600wpm and the thing took forever to read (10+ hours). Just a GPA Boost
He is an amazing professor who really knows his stuff. The class is almost optional but you'll go anyways because he is so interesting. The assignments are not hard at all but, are fun and allow for creativity.
He will not make your life miserable with details that won't matter. Classes aren't mandatory to attend, but are really interesting. Great GPA booster but ALSO a great prof to take a class with if you are ACTUALLY interested in religion. He's a very knowledgeable guy, his own book and interviews are a good listen too on your own time if interested
Nothing short of the best. Loves what he does. Understands that students have busy schedules so he is very flexible. Excellent.
No exam, just a presentation, book review and 3 blogs you have to write. All pretty straight forward. The lectures are sometimes interesting but not really tested on. Not necessary to attend but some days he describes expectations for assignments so it can be helpful. The himmler textbook is long but you only need to read about 300 pages of it.
Such an easy class! It's not often you come across such a passionate teacher who is so clear about assignments and a fair marker. I honestly barely had to go to class, so the lectures were somewhat supplementary, but despite being disorganized his lectures are interesting. Wish all teachers were like him!
I'll put this in perspective for you. I went to 1 class all year (the first) and ended with an A. Blog posts are 45% of your grade. Finding the first blog article is time consuming but after that you can just use other people's articles (all blogs with sources are posted on his site) and write your own blog with it. Easiest class ever.
Dr. Hexham seems like a very nice person. This class was more of a history class than a class on atheism, and it was obvious that he was recycling course materials from other courses that were completely unrelated. He was quite disorganized and he does not reply to student emails. I found his overall instruction very frustrating and confusing.
Cutest professor ever, clearly passionate. His lectures are a bit confusing but don't worry because he doesn't test you on them. Posts the tests on D2L a week before you write them so I skipped classes after realizing. Tests based on readings only. Only part you have to work for is the blog assignments, still easy tho. GPA boost, & a good class:)
This class on atheism is actually pretty interesting if you make an effort to listen in class. Assignments are graded fairly easily and focuses on connecting real world events to class material. Dr. Hexham is a really nice prof. He cares about students and helps when asked. Lectures are pretty clear, but they tend to focus on people than events
There was no need whatsoever to attend class. Tests were based on readings only. It was an easy A course. Hey, he even gave the MC questions ahead of time. Unsatisfying if you're looking for intellectual stimulation, but if you put in the barest effort it'll boost your GPA.
Professor Hexham is a great prof, his textbook is really clear-cut and helpful. Attendance of class is kind of non-mandatory, this is a super easy class as long as you put the effort in and follow the clear rubric for the mini-blogs and the midterms. Also no final so that's pretty great.
Great class, very interesting and straightforward! Would recommend to anyone with even a mild interest in religious studies, Hexham is awesome!
I took this class online as a GPA booster and my god was it the easiest class I have ever taken in my life. There are 3 mini-blogs and 2 tests. The blogs are very easy to write only 500 words. The tests he literally gives you before hand saying they are practice questions from last semester but this guy uses the EXACT same questions. MUST TAKE!
Definitely an easy A course, and he is such a sweet professor. You can tell how passionate he is about the material he teaches. All you have to do is write 3 mini blogs which are so simple and then write 2 tests in which he gives you a bunch of questions in advance and just memorize the answers for them from the textbook.
Test are 3 tests now, and assignments seem to have harder grading criteria
Not very friendly. If you ask him a question, he never actually answers it. Tough tough marker. I failed the first assignment. I'm a B student.
Professor Hexham is an actual intellect. His class is the first time in 3 yrs I felt I actually learned something. He is smart, well spoken and does not inject his personal political beliefs into the course material, which is rare. His tact, class and intelligence will be greatly missed.
By far one of the most disappointing classes of my university career. I thought that atheism would be incredibly interesting but the lectures were all over the place. Most lectures didn't tie into atheism at all. The exams focused on the smallest and most irrelevant details so be ready to memorize the most insignificant things.
Hexham is one of those profs who understands what an introductory course means. Not to much work, and an easy A. He is very knowledgeable and approachable, and only assigns 3 easy blogs and 3 easy tests. The textbook contains way more additional material but is necessary if you want 90-100% on his tests.
Dr. Hexham is an inspiring interesting lecturer. His format is clear and his grading criteria is straightforward and easy to follow. You learn a lot of interesting facts and ideas if you go to classes and pay attention.
Incredibly nice prof. Make sure to write good blogs and you can easily get full marks plus a bonus mark. Some of his test questions are posted on quizlet by previous students, make sure to go over them he will probably use a few of those. Do the readings but don't worry too much about them, just get the general idea.
Best prof. Did not show up for class but read the textbook and got good marks.
Dr. Hexham was a delight. He is a very sweet man! He tends to focus a lot on specific dates and names of scholars but I learned a lot in his class. Make sure to do the readings and put a little effort into the papers and you will pass with flying colours!
he spends too much time telling us useless things that are not testable. but he ended up curving the first two tests. i ended up with an A because i scored well on the blog posts. seems to be an easy marker for first year course. i just didnt actually learn anything in this class.
I took this course as a GPA booster and it did not disappoint. I rarely attended lectures and still got an A+ by doing the readings. Those complaining they learned nothing obviously didn't do the readings (they are FULL of information). Ultimately, It's up to you to absorb the material, he can't force you. Keep doing you Dr. Hexham.
RELS 200 was tough for an introductory course, he gave us a lot of readings, and the tests were impossible that he had to curve one of them as a lot failed. That being said, I think Professor Hexham is an amazing person, he cares about his students and always willing to help you out to get an A in this class.
Lots of reading that is very irrelevant to tests. Everything he says that will be on a test is false; always a surprise no matter what you study. Textbook and lecture do not coincide and lectures are so boring you fall asleep when he opens his mouth.
He is so boring and will ask you questions that are none of his business. Plus he makes you do these blog posts that aren't even helpful. Couldn't he make class at least a little bit exciting?
Lectures are not really tested on but they are actually interesting and one of the few I have enjoyed going to. He is a brilliant speaker and his experience shows throughout the course. He gives sample tests let you know how you'll be tested, and the small written assignment is broad to allow you to choose what you want. Fridays are online learning
He is an amazing professor and wishes well for his students! His tests and paper are super easy and make this class like an easy A. I would highly recommend taking RELS 200 with Irving Hexham for an option, as this class is amazing and an excellent GPA booster.
Awful prof. Lectures are boring. Asks students personal questions. Makes students do useless blog posts. Marks harshly. Does not help to improve.
Do not take this class. His rels 200 and 349 classes are easy but he changed this course and the sample tests are no longer the actual tests! Also the TA marked the blogs super harsh. No longer an easy A.
His 200 level classes are easy enough but this class was unexpectedly difficult. His exams got harder because a lot of students were complaining they were too easy (he told students this during the first class). Because of this, the exams were actually quite difficult and required a lot of reading/studying. I worked my butt off and finished with b
I found that much of the emphasis in this course revolved around Hexham's own accomplishments. The lectures, which are in no way mandatory, were quite painful so sit through. Although his tests are easy, he takes a long time marking. This is a gpa booster.
Hexham is one of the most genuine prof's I have had at U of C. He is very passionate about his field of work and study and loves to teach it to his students. This class on Cults and New Religions is actually very interesting and professor Hexham's material makes it even better.
Nice prof. Interesting content.
He changed the assessments so now it is 4 MC tests, the first three are worth 30% which is either from lecture slides or the textbook, and the last test is cumulative for 10%. It is easy to do well because he posts a "practice test" 2 weeks in advance which is around 70 questions and he takes 30 of the questions for the test. Great class!
He is the best prof I've had for electives. Get yourself a serving of Irving!
Awesome GPA booster! Gives out exam questions beforehand so all you have to do is memorize the answers. You don't need to go to class to do well because he posts his slides and tests on D2L but the textbook is required because his tests are based off of it.
He is always available to answer your questions, replies to emails in a timely fashion, he is interested in your success as a scholar, and his class was student facilitated, which was great for a 400 level course as it really prepared me for Graduate school (i.e. have to give presentations etc.). I had an amazing experience in his class.
Great choice for an elective and Irving is a very likeable guy.
Really enjoyed his knowledge on religion. Going to class was like story time for me. Mini blog and power point assignments were pass or fail but easy! Just put some effort into in and you are guaranteed to pass. Class was an easy A, if you get the textbook, as all answers for the sample test questions were from there.
This class is an easy A and a good grade booster. He posts test questions on D2L and uses 30 of them for his tests. Just do the readings from the textbook to find the answer and you'll be fine even if you don't show up to class. A sweet prof who is genuinely passionate about what he teaches.
Never got an easy A+ before this. There are 3 tests and 2 assignments. The 2 assignments are very easy he gives you 100% if you do them straightforward. He gives a question pool for each of the tests and you can find the answers from the textbook. Then all you have to do is memorize the pool and you'll get an easy A+ on the tests. Easiest class!
Third class with Hexham and it is the most interesting. I absolutely love his teaching style and he is extremely respected in his field, which shows through his teaching structure. One of my all time favourite profs of my 4 years at U of C and this is sadly my last class with him. Do yourself a favour and take any RELS class you can get with him.
Dr. Hexham is one of the best profs I have had since the pandemic hit. He truly cares about his students and gives them every resource to succeed. My class had three midterms and a final and he gave out all the questions before hand. read the textbook and its an easy A.
Best prof I had in my entire 4 years. Super caring and understanding, especially during COVID19 which, many other profs of mine were not. His lectures are super interesting and I am so glad I got to take another course with him. He is UofC gem honestly, one of the best profs this university has.
Hexham was the most caring, accommodating prof I've had in years. He truly cares about you learning in class and enjoying the content. He also takes into account our mental health and circumstances, especially during COVID.
He was such an amazing proff and so understanding!! If I ever got to take another class with him I would be so happy, best grade Ive ever gotten and he truly is so nice and caring !
I took his class and honestly he was extremely understanding, his tests were extremely easy and his lectures are very interesting.
Best prof EVER. Extremely easy tests as long as you do the assigned work. Love this man.
I honestly believe there is no kinder prof in the university right now. I truly appreciate the hell out of this dude, but I guess hell would not be appropriate for the class. The heaven? Either way, love this man.
Just take the course. You wont regret it. Solid A. He literally wants you to get an A!
Most understanding and nicest prof I have ever had. Really wants you to succeed. Thank you Hexham!!!!
Very nice guy. One of the only profs that I can tell that wants you to do really well in his class. Easiest A of my Life literally did no work.
He seems super nice and understanding! Definitely gives out a lot of pdfs to read on religion. For the class I took it was online and we only had 3 tests the entire semester.
Professor Hexham is a true legend in his field, he is extremely knowledgeable, passionate, caring, and kind to his students. He is one of the best professors I have had at university and his actions during this pandemic is evidence to show how caring he is for his student's well-being. Thank you Professor Hexham for a great class and take care.
Took RELS 200 this year and it was an online course. The class was relatively easy you just have to watch the lecture videos which professor Hexham goes through really well! There are a few readings you have to do, but all in all it was a relatively easy and fun course!
One of the easiest classes I've ever taken; just practice the sample questions and you'll pass. Being online made the tests even more convenient and easy. The only downside is the large amount of reading and dry lectures. Lecture recordings involved only old audio recordings of in person classes instead of narrated powerpoints, which kind of sucked
Great guy, but cannot make up his mind on what he wants to structure the tests or assignments. There is a lack of clarity in his classes on what he expects from student, but he still gives the exam questions before the exams so its a win win.
He used a strategy of testing unlike any other prof I have taken so far, but I thought it was successful and I learned a lot in this class. There was a bit more work than I expected based on other reviews and things were disorganized at times, but I still enjoyed it. The course name is misleading - the content is primarily about South Africa.
Easiest class ever. He conveys the material clearly and all you have to do is take notes in class and study from the sample questions. The professor is a delight and very eager about the course.
What an absolute joy of a professor! He is so passionate about his teaching and our learning. The textbook is written by him, and the questions for the tests are selected from the practice questions he gives in advance of the test. Did a magic show instead of class on our last day as well, could not recommend more!
Prof Hexham is extremely knowledgeable, patient, and very clear lecturer. He does take attendance throughout the course, but just show up to the lectures. Most/All his tests he will send out sample questions prior, all the sample questions will likely be on the test (He usually only uses 25 of them, as the tests are only 25 questions).
He is an incredible person and very kind hearted. I would definitely recommend him.
Professor Hexham was a phenomenal instructor and a charming lecturer. RELS 349 was made even more fascinating with his anecdotes, and his clear passion for the subject is contagious. Highly recommend!
He was absolutely amazing, so interesting and engaging in his lectures through storytelling and encouraged discussion. Also showed he cared by consulting our class on what assignment structures and due dates we felt comfortable with. By far one of the best U of C professors.
Dr. Hexham was a fair professor and was generous with the marking. You can enjoy learning from him as he is an expert in his field.
He is a very kind and smart individual who clearly cares about his students and his studies. However, the lecture material is not found on any of the quizzes and the lectures themselves do not provide any relevant information. The three tests are based purely on the practice tests. It's a very easy course but not overly informative.
Sir Hexham is a gem. Despite his age, he is very passionate, kind and caring. He knows how the sample questions are an easier way to learning and studying rather than blindly testing students on random material like other profs. I hope he gets the respect and care he deserves from all the students.
If you think this will be an easy block week course... think again. Tested on minute details from over 300 pages of academic articles. And a 20 page paper for a final with absolutely no guidelines or rubric. By far the worse class I have taken at UofC.
Very hard to communicate with, seldom responds to emails. Assigned a 15 page research paper with no rubric or guidelines 1 week before the deadline. Would not recommend taking a class with him.
Worst class taken at UOFC. Did this course as a block week, where we were assigned over 50 pages per night that we would be tested on. Also had a final assignment worth 40% that was a 20 page essay with no rubric or clear outlines. When brought up concerns over the course he wrote back very rudely and claimed he could lower my grade.
Lectures are engaging, with thoughtful discussion encouraged. Though challenging, the class is worthwhile if you stay on top of the readings. Using Unstuck ai and other tools made study prep easier.
he's very wise and knowledgeable on his profession. he's extremely fair with his tests and provides practice questions that all often show up on the test. unfortunately, he is not good with technology and is getting old and ill so he has trouble with d2l and other things. if provided with a TA, he would be perfect
The ratings are disingenuous. He's a nice prof, but the questions that he puts on the exam are stuff that is out of scope from class material and extremely specific. Everyone was basically stumped, and this is was our first exam. I'm scared to receive the grade. He used a bunch of sample questions, which I'm glad about, but that test was not it.
He is the best professor I've genuinely ever encountered. He is so beyond knowledgeable and you can tell that he has a true passion for what he teaches. I will forever remember his class.
Very disorganized and off topic. Teaches from his own book. He's been removed or switched out for another prof several times. Avoid taking his class.
removed from our class for good reason, no d2l until a week after term started, diff answers to the same questions, vague about test material [i.e. focus on all this material, 90% of it wasnt on test], losing track of what to teach/material from other courses, admitted he didn't teach us material that was on the test. real nice but avoid as a prof.
Took him for RELS 201 for a month until he got replaced by Dr.Jurgens and got the entire course moved online due to various reasons. On our first midterm he completely forgot to add half the questions which resulted in a lot of complaints to the head department for religious studies. He was just very forgetful (due to his age) and was all talk
