Very informatitive class, but his teaching methods are for the birds. Its basically his way or the high way. Gives u the chance to voice ur opinion on a subject matter,and if u dont agree with him, he will humiliate you in front of the whole class.

he would lecture for the full 2hrs 50 mins. you think you would be comfortable with the material, then he would give unclear questions on the test overall he is horrible
Not that bad of a guy. His test are not that bad and he tells you whats going to be on them.
one of the worst teachers. only 4 exams. talks all class. slept everyday in class. all tests are kinda hard. alot of minorties were getting F's and D's . even the smart people were getting C's

Oh yeah...and watch out for the ball of spit that forms in the middle of his lip. You definitly don't wanna sit in the front or you run the risk of having it land on you when he gets excited.

WORST professor ever. Requires students to buy a book he wrote even though it's not used at all for class and not required by the school. If you don't buy his book you fail & the school does nothing about this because he's tenured. Unclear and off-topic lectures, spits on students while speaking.

Good teacher. There will be a lot of notes, you dont need the book. His class will be a lot of note taking, but if you read the notes you'll get a good grade, its not hard. youll also learn a Lot form him.

Had him 2 yrs ago & just became a grad student @ john jay. U really want a future in CJ? Take him. Yeah, he's not easy but he keeps it real & teaches like a 4-yr college prof. U want an easy A he's not for u. He IS clear in what he wants, u just have to figure out his system..or u'll struggle.
I asked for extra help and he refused to give it, I couldn't get in touch with him at all. He never responded to my e-mails or to the messages left in his office. He told me that my grade was fine...yet I got a D. Because of his lie now I can't graduate on time. Do NOT take this man's class!!!

If you are unfortunate enough to take Dr. Kantor, my first recommendation is to take him in the summer. There is no way you'll tolerate his arrogance and obvious lack of enthusiasm for teaching in a regular semester. His grading is unjust and biased. Attendance has no bearing on your grade, so showing up doesn't help! Overall, he's a terrible prof

Agree with last comment. He is a great professor who taught me a lot! Clear directions on papers and tests and nothing he's never gone over in class. He allows for class discussion on pertinent issues and also offers his own opinion so you might need thick skin to appreciate his class

Stop whinning and complaining about Prof. Kantor. What, not used to a little push? Trust me, when it's time to transfer to a University there will be instructors worst than Prof. Kantor. This should prep you guys to prepare for the worst. He is an intelligent man and most of what he teaches you will come up in later classes. Trust me!!!
He is tough but fair, lots of peole have complained about the book you have to buy that he wrote. This is college, buy the book, do your best, suck it up, and you will get what you earn in his class. It is hard work, but you get what you put into his class. I agree he is arrogant though.

He lets you use your notes on tests, but then obviously the questions are seriously hard-half the time you dont even have the answers, his lectures are really interesting, i had a b average the whole class, but then final was worth WAY to much which brought my grade down drastically. he's nice, but tough
He's a great prof. he lets you use your notes on tests... but that also means that the test are harder.. you should be a very good note taker... He is hard.. but in a good way.. He also let's you do extra credit work if your borderline... and if you do good it boost ur grade up... He's good.. but you have to be prepared to take him...
Condescending. Speaks to students as if they were in 8th grade. Will not speak to you about grades or questions during class. Questions on tests have very little to do with what he taught. He also only teaches out of "his" book.

i thought Dr. Kantor was a really good professor. his lectures were clear, although he does like to go off on tangents sometimes, but its all relevant. he lets you use your texts and notes for the tests! the tests arent any harder because of it either, all you have to do is pay attention, take good notes and you'll be fine
Easy since all tests are open books and notes. He is kind of boring. You do however have to buy the book he published for $58 even though its only 50 pages, in addition to the standard book, but he teaches from it and its need for the tests.

I took all the classes I could with him, thinking I could pass them but I failed. He ENJOYS failing students. Never ever take this professor. His 'notes' are scribbling circles and squares on the board so you have to write down EVERYTHING he says, which sucks.
He is indeed horrible.. very hard and he does use squares and circles on his notes on board. I failed 3 of his classes before I realized to not take him anymore. I have since passed all PSY and SOC classes. He likes failing students.

Teacher is a difficult grader who doesn't reward effort at all. You may feel like you deserve an A in his class and he will surprise you with a B-. His tests are open notes but unless you copied what he said word for word your notes will help minimally. Expect to purchase his book in addition to the text. My advice: choose another teacher!

This guy will make you think you are passing and will give you a nice suprise and give you a D or an F! So what if he lets you use your notes, your only going to score but so high in his class anyway. He doesn't give higher than a B or C to anyone.
Professor Kantor's a little boring with his purely lecture style and his personality is not very welcoming, but if you take notes and DO THE WORK (GASP! What a concept!), it's entirely possible to get an A!
He's a nice guy but it seems that he loves hearing himself talk,cuz wen he rarely does ask a question for the class to answer,when som1 answers he cuts them off, shoots them down & gets defensive no matter waht they say. Tests are hard. Lecture is hard to get through without getting bored. Notes on the board are illegible and look like a football team's playbook with the x's, lines, o's, etc. Tells some enjoyable stories from time to time yet isn't very personable. Mentioned Delilah's Den frequently in my lectures.
Horrible. While he doesn't give homework, you'll almost wish he does because his grading system consists of two tests (he does drop one of the first 3) and the ridiculous final exam. His tests are hard, and consist of specific details that are impossible to remember. I'll be doing whatever I can to NOT take him again.

Dr Kantor is the best sociology professor I ever had throughout my college career, he has too much information to share with his students, his lecture are really fun and amusing. for those who hate Dr kantor they must be very lazy, if you follow the study guide that he gives out you should do well. but his final was tricky still ended up with A-

If you read allot of the coments by people that don't like prof Kantor you can see that if your an illiterate moron you probally wont like him. If you have a brain you find him very informative, although dry at times. If you read his book and understand it you'll be in great shape, if you listen and take part in class there should be no problem.

you know this class was actually pretty easy the only reason why i didn't get an A on his class was my own damn fault... his tests come right from his lectures (which by the way his lectures come right from his book).... but yeah the one class i did actually attend and take notes on i wound up getting a 95 on the test.... i think he was cool
Dr. Kantor is a good teacher. I don't recommend taking him @ 8am though cause his lectures can be boring sometimes. But as long as you show up, pay attention, and study you will do fine. I only got a C+ cause I forgot to study for one test. Would def recommend him as a good soc teacher though.

I find Kantor interesting. Obviously, if you fall asleep, you won't do well. He doesn't let you use tape recorders so you have to pay attention. And the notes aren't hard to read if you listen and write down what he says as he writes it. In the end, yes they're a little all-over but just keep up, stay awake and you'll be fine.

I got a B- in his class, but i think hes absolutley terrible. yes he does teach, b/c some profs dont, but he doesnt give a lot of chances for you to do well, only 2 tests and hes not a fair grader on the presentations. couldnt care less about his students. not once did he say hi to us when comming into class. felt like i was part of the furniture..
I barely passed his class.. He was horrible.. He always made reference to Dillahs Den.. Which got really annoying.. He also never turned the lights on in his class which was awful.. He failed most people in his class or either dropped.. Wouldn't recommend him...
He isn't the worst professor in the world, but he is probably the most boring you will ever take. It was hard studying for his tests because of a severe lack of interest in the course. It is a shame that sociology is a class that is mainly what your professor thinks of it. So my advice is stay away if you want an A.

I'm sure he is a very nice man, but he is a terrible teacher. He lectures the entire time in a monotone voice. I had to hold my eyes open in order to stay awake. And he only gives 3 tests so if you don't do well on them, you're done. I do not recommend taking him, I liked sociology until his class.

when i first took the class i thought he was gonna b ridiculous but i failed the first test because i didnt study and since then i studied for every test and i got a C in his class.if u read his book,pay attention and study .you should do fine.he turned out to be alright.just happy its over with.
He's a hard professor. He'll give you the study guide, but the tests will sometimes have things not on the study guide. His grading system is tough. I failed both tests with F's, amazingly, to God be the glory, I passed my presentation with a 100 and passed the class with a B-. He helped me out, and I passed even though I should've failed.

This teacher cannot relate to the common student. He is very biased and liberal in his teaching, comments, etc. He has a big ego and thinks that he's smarter than everyone is his class. quite cutting in his comments, etc. Do Not recommend this person as a teacher.

Not a good Professor.. his lectures are very clear (but boring), the books are easy to understand, and the whole time you think you know the material until you take one of his exams. His exams are very confusing and he makes you second guess yourself the entire time because of the way he words the questions.
This man does not know how to teach...from the get go, he was very intolerable, and boring. His lectures were all over the place, and his study guides were written not typed, and his handwriting looks like something of chickenscratch. and forget about looking at the board when he writes because he is very unorganized.
This professor is a nice guy, but his style is less than ideal. His Sociology lectures are VERY self centered; you will never use your text book (says something huh?). You instead must KNOW his essays or you are destined to fail. I am an A student and I barely made a B for this class. If you HAVE to take this, just memorize his essays.

This guy doesn't deserve to be a professor. He gives 3 exams throughout the semester and thats the only way that he grades you. I went to his office to explain why I wasn't doing so well in class and to see if I could get extra work to boost my grade. He stated "No, this is not high school." This guy has no heart. This guy rants about absouletly nothing telling you stories about his personal trips to africa, alaska and asia. He nevers uses the book and the first class he tells you you need his own book which is 70 pages and costs 65 dollars. he only gives 3 tests and is the most self centered individual i've ever met. i am (was) an A student that got a D in his class. i went to his office and asked for help that was a waste of time bcuz he makes u feel stupid,he made us spend over 200$ in books which the book store wont buy back. i though soc.121 was a fun and ez class, ill let u know when i re-take it with a better teacher
All in all he's really not that bad. I mean sure he does not use the text book in his class so don't even bother buying it.I recommend you just rent it.His book is kind of helpful because most of the things in it are usually on the test. The test are not that hard you just have to pay full attention in class and write everything he says/writes.

The first day is great. He tells you that there are no papers, no graded homework, no midterm, and no final. There are only three 30 question tests. After the second test you will realize that your entire grade is based on 90 mutiple choice questions, and maybe that isn't so great.
Kantor was an amazing teacher. Many see him as a person who just likes to babble but truth is if you ACTUALLY pay attention to his "rambling" you'll pass the course with ease. Very down to earth person you just have to see beyond his dullness.

If you like classes where there is absolutely no discussion between professor and student, and all you hear for 2 hours is the sound of his voice, this is the class for you. Worst of all is that he gives you a study guide with material and then gives a test that has none of those pieces of material on it. Boring, unclear, just don't take him.
You basically bought the book for no reason. When he lectures, he answers his own questions and you will not discuss anything. His notes are a bunch of words he puts on the board and circles. A lot of people complained about Kantor, but I really don't understand a good amount of them. I'll admit that there's little discussion, that his study guide is broad, that what he writes on the board is somewhat incoherent. But most of the people in my class took no notes, probably did not study, and expected to pass. I studied, and did well.
Very well could be the worst professor in the history of education. The whole class is based off three tests that contains material that is barely covered. The lectures are extremely boring. I'm a NJSTARS student and I got a C+ in this course. Unless you are an EXTREMELY great note-taker, I would stay away from this class.
Easy Class if your good at note taking. You have 3 exams, no homework and only have to show for exam dates, though you should show for notes. long boring lectures. points often repeated and horrible handwriting. nice guy tho tries to joke around and make it fun. not your typical sociology class more about economy.
AGAIN Students please do not purchase the textbook. He provides the notes for you. He was a relatively fair teacher to me, however, with that said, I did find his exams to be a bit confusing. Study and Memorize notes and you'll be fine.

Dr. Kantor is a good professor. All of the topics at hand interested me. It is true that his notes on the board are messy, but they will only affect you if you don't LISTEN to him. If you listen, & write out the important points, you will pass the course with ease. His language is not super advanced to where you cant understand him. Real good guy.

I rarely write reviews but Kantor deserves some support here. Like many other reviews mentioned, you mainly have to take notes and pay attention in order to do well. Your grade will be based on 3 exams, if you review a little, you'll get a B at the very least. He explains concepts well and if you actually want to learn you won't have a problem.
The mans class drags on like crazy, all he does is lecture. If i could have taken another professor i would have. he is a nice guy but the class is too hard, especially if you need a book to review on, then do not pick this professor.
He can tend to drone for a bit, but when he engages the class it is interesting. The only grades for the class are the 3 exams. Tests are based on lecture notes and his essays; stay on top of it and you should pass the class. Final is NOT cumulative. Quizzes are given as extra credit for tests. He provides office hours for extra help.

Lecture heavy class. Professor Kantor is a very intelligent man but his lectures suffers from his constant distractions from the topic at hand. The tests aren't extrememly hard, but you have to study hard and take notes to pass them. There are only 3 tests, so how you do on one given test may make or break your final grade.

Very boring class. His notes are hard to follow. I'm not a good test taker and that's all this class was. I studied pretty hard and still received a C. If you love not doing homework and only taking tests then this class is for you. Otherwise I would suggest finding another professor.
currently taking him for introduction to sociology and his class is very boring it is all lecture. there are only a few grades. he gives out very poor study guides. he has a little sense of humor but for the most part is just a old fashion professor where all he does is walk in lecture and then walk out. hopefully this is helpful and good luck.
This class is generally easy. He tells you to buy a textbook but you don't need to buy it. All information for the tests can be learned from his lectures. Go to every class and pass. To pass the tests with a good grade (A/B) then I would recommend long study time. Other than that, if you are interested Globalization I would recommend this course.
There are 3 exams an 2 quizzes. If you are not a person who is willing to study do not take this class. Exam questions require a lot of thought and recollection. He makes you buy the book he wrote for the course which is very unnecessary. Lectures are long. The class is easy if you pay attention and take good notes.

Stand clear of this professor, only 3 exams and his study guides review 0 of the material that would be on the exam. Not understanding when you ask for help either and his lectures make you wanna fall asleep. Office hours are always at 7 am and never answers emails. Would never ever take again.
Hard teacher, took his Sociology class and nearly failed. 3 tests only and no essays or projects. If you're a hands-on type of student, do not take him. Intellectual? You could. Straight 1 1/2 hour lectures with no connection to the students. Walk in, lecture, dismiss. He would be a great teacher for professionals, maybe. Choose wisely :)
Gives long lectures each class. 3 tests total, no other assignments. If you fail one of the tests, there could be a problem, but each test is like 30 questions multiple choice, so its not too hard. With a sleepy class, it could be boring, but if you interact with the teacher, you really get to enjoy the class.
I don't think Kantor is the worst person in the world, but he made the class harder than it needed to be. I honestly don't think the tests were that bad, it was the insane quizzes that he gave about (very obscure) global events that knocked my grade to a B. Beware of those quizzes - the current events are obscure so research world news sites.
The class has no participation. We take choppy notes. The tests are a huge part of your grade, he will single u out if u do poorly. Idk. Not the worst human being but not the best.
The entire semester consists of sitting and listening to brutal lectures from start to finish of class, with many of his political opinions. More info than necessary and 3 tests (with curve balls) are the only things you're graded on. No assignments, no extra credit. If you're not a test taker and don't learn from long, dull lectures, DO NOT TAKE.
He makes you buy his book which is just as boring as his lectures. He will call you out in a rude way if you get the answers to his questions wrong. I just think MCC should evaluate him again. He teaches like the "clear eye, dry eye" guy.

I seriously don't suggest this course to anyone! the teacher is so nice and you can tell hes passionate about his job BUT he is all over the place. The class grade was literally based off of THREE tests. There was no homework, extra credit,nothing! So if you fail the tests, you fail the class. Waste of time and money.

Hes a nice professor and you can tell hes very passionate about what hes teaching. There are only three exams throughout the whole class with no homework, extra credit, or anything. He can also be very disorganized with the way he teaches and just writes random notes on the board. If you are not a good test taker I would avoid this class.
He is nice professor and enjoys teaching the subject. The only thing is, the whole class is based off of 3 exams which are extremely confusing. I spent weeks before studying for exams, and still got a C on every one of them. You need to read the textbook for sure because most of the information comes from there. Overall, very difficult class.

Worst professor I've had. All he does is talk, he doesn't give homework or quizzes. The textbook didn't help. He gave me a 0 on the final and didn't specify what I did wrong. I wouldn't recommend him.
At first the class wasn't too difficult, but once the pandemic hit the class got worse. He hardly cares for his students, and many times he has belittled my classmates as well as treat them as if they know nothing. I had sent him multiple emails about getting a 0 on a test, and he has yet to respond or fix the grade. Trust me do not take his class
Was hesitant to take this class because of the ratings I had seen but turned out great. No work outside of class besides studying. Lectures can get boring because he teaches the entire time with little space for student participation. Grade comes from three multiple choice tests that are easy to pass if you read his book, come to class and study.
bring a pillow and blanket to class as it'll be a snore-fest. he thinks he's hilarious but no one laughs but him and often times he can be very insulting. he only grades you on a midterm and final which are EXTREMELY difficult no matter how hard you study. also his "textbook" is a book he wrote himself... don't waste your money. *zZzz*
The best way to describe Kantor is "meh". He'll go over the notes each class, as long as you take notes and listen for when he has a question then you should be fine. The textbook is his book, which he'll make sure to remind you of EVERY CLASS. Other than that, it's just like any other boring but easy(ish) course

You need to attend class for points and you will fail if you dont read his book. 3 writing exams all sem for grades, if youre not a good writer or lecture listener you will not do well. Miss class, points are taken from exams. Lecture and his notes help on exams. I got an B by a landslide and I am an A average student. Dont take him unless needed
I took Kantor during Fall 2020 for Sociology. Kantor only relies on 3 exams for the whole course. If you do poorly on 2 of the exams you will not pass his class. For the exams he wants you to use keywords from his book, by the way that book of his is very challenging to read/understand. Boring lectures! Kantor is terrible!
There were only 3 exam with 3 questions. I kind of like it because I don't like to take many quizes or exams. If you follow his shared notes and read his book so you will get and easy A. He's not bad at all. His class sound like you were listening to AM radio early bird station but like I said, pay attention to his lectures and read his book.
There are better sociology professors to take. This guy has given us three written tests which were pretty vague. He will take your grade down for not being present in class.
He took over our class last minute, instant regret! He openly berates students in class. You have to attend class & he expects you to take notes but its a mute point because the tests he gives is on the textbook not the lectures, he doesn't teach the book. Although I found the class very interesting, wish I dropped it when he took the class over.
Professor Kantor was a good instructor. It was an ok class, it was just risky since it was based on 3 tests only. No homework and nothing else. He explains everything in great detail. You have to read his own written book which will help you on the exams. His class was like a podcast. I recommend him if you like little work.
If you like sociology, take him. He is very smart and he teaches really well. If you read his notes and listen to his lecture then you'll get an A in all three of his exams. Just write all that you know in the exams and you'll be fine!
Mr. Kantor is a good and genuine professor. He is passionate in what he does. However, his class was not for me. The 4 exams are the only grades in his course. No attendance or participation grade. One has to put in the extra effort if they want to get a good grade in his course. I don't recommend taking this course as a first option.

His class sometimes smelled a bit funky. Lectures were long and really boring. The way he teaches is very difficult to understand and boring. He uses his book which he wrote that apparently is what he believes sociology is. We have to write 4 essays based on his book, meaning we have to buy it just to pass his class. Grades are opinion based.
I personally enjoyed this class and found it interesting but it isn't for everyone. Professor Kantor is very smart teacher and really made me think of things. The only thing about this class that was iffy is that your only grade that matters is based on whatever grade you get on your exams. Also he's very old school, no online anything. WRITE NOTES
tbh for me he was fine, i liked how he taught very straight forward. but if you slack off (skip classes, don't write notes, etc) you'll definitely get penalized. i wish i could've used a computer but note taking wasn't so bad, everything he included in lectures were on the exams. he's actually a very nice teacher but i see how some don't like him
We had only 2 grades for the entire semester, both of which were the midterm and our final. Long boring lectures. He also does not use any sort of technology whatsoever and does not want to see any in his classroom. He brought up politics a decent amount of times and gave his bias opinions.
Going through the course it felt like he didn't care if you failed. I'm genuinely baffled by his audacity to charge students $1 for study guides of which you have only 3 tests that you wont find the grade out until later. If you have a life outside of being a student then as well pick another professor. Students can only hope he retires soon.
Kantor had to be the worst professor I've ever taken. The lectures were extremely boring and made absolutely no sense. His class is graded by 3 tests that have nothing to do with the lectures. And he basically told the class that he doesn't grade based on your test scores but whether he likes you or not. TERRIBLE. Definitely Would not recommend.
TERRIBLE!!! Lectures were spent talking about sociologists and then adding that they were wrong. He has his book which he mentions all the time. He one time made me stay after class to talk to me about how using the bathroom during class was disrespectful and rude. I would ask for help after class and all he would say was "Just read my book."

All he does is yap. His lectures is him just rephrasing his own book. Almost fell asleep 50% of the time and he will threaten to take your phone if he even sees it once. Should've retired 20 years ago, as he's not up to date with canvas and only gave 3 tests this whole semester. There are no other grades for this class. Save your money and time.
Professor's lectures can be dry, but engaging with the material works well. Textbook is used, but Unstuck ai was a helpful study tool alongside it. Attend class, take notes, and you'll do fine.
kantor is a yapper to say the least. every class is just a lecture where he talks the entire time; i had to pinch myself a few times to make sure i stayed awake. as boring as he is, you don't want to fall asleep in his class. miss even a day and you might be lost on the next exam, which sucks because he only gives out 3 exams the entire semester.
he doesn't do anything online. could only check grades by him showing you your test score on a piece of paper. he has no shame with taking your phone away. he also makes you buy his own book. didn't really learn anything for this class, just remembered enough for the exams and then forgot it all. don't be surprised if you don't learn anything.
as long as u have motivation to show up to the classes, pay attention and take notes, you should be fine in his class. but i didn't really learn anything, so i wouldn't say this class could benefit you in the long run. if you're really interested in learning sociology, i don't recommend.

He yells at you if he sees your phone, and is always talking terribly about gen z. Claims he's not racist but made many racist remarks doing lectures. Glad it's over

If you plan on taking a Sociology class I highly and I repeat HIGHLY do not recommend taking Professor Kantors class. Extremely lecture heavy and I found it hard to bother to pay attention to the class because of the least amount of interest he made the class out to be. He has a book you have to buy, but I felt like didn't help much towards exams.
I took him before I even knew about rate my professor, so you know it's bad. There was only 3 exams and that was our grade and maybe when we came. Some stuff on the exam weren't even what we learned I never even knew my grade. It's boring and I kept sleeping. NOT TAKE THIS CLASS PLS!
I took his class not knowing about ratemyprofessor, I regret not knowing about it sooner cus all he did was talk and talk and talk. no homework, no assignments, his lectures were NOT based off on any of our exams, so it was mad hard to pass them. i gotta retake this course due to his lack of teaching. do yourself a favor and do not waste ur money.

heavy lectures weren't an issue for me but the entirety of Dr. Kantors teaching is hoping you fail. From placing bets on students failing , to singling you out, he'll embarrass you, misinform students on religion, and make you buy HIS book to not teach from it. Biggest waste of time and he wasn't even there for a month. Save yourself and your money

I know Professor Kantor reads these as he bitterly complains about students with regular frequency, if you are reading this Irwin, take some accountability and understand you are incompetent and should not be teaching. If you are relying on your textbooks to teach, you are not a professor, you are a salesman trying to sell your overpriced textbook.
Should retire. Can't even fathom how Middlesex still allows him to “teach”. Disgrace to the school on their part. He will place bets on students failing and WILL fail you because it makes his ego better.
This professor talks for the entire class, with no use of technology allowed. His handwriting is difficult to read, and it's easy to zone out or fall asleep. The textbook is overpriced and doesn't seem very helpful. Grades are based solely on three exams, and the class isn't particularly engaging or fun. I hated this course and do not recommend it.
