Probably the easiest professor teaching Econ 302. Highly recommended. Very helpful in office hours. More than half of the class got A's.
He is my favorite professor! He really loves teaching. He took time to answer every question posted in the forum. It's really helpful! want to attend his class even if the class is 8am.
Easy class, don't need book
If you want to survive ECON, take professor DiIanni. He used to teach at a small school, and in doing so, truly cares about making sure you understand what he is teaching. If you review over what materials he gives to you, and you actually study, you'll be fine. Almost had the class with Vasquez, and my God, get DiIanni. At least for 302.
Very clear.
Best ECON professor out there! Very clear and helpful.
Best econ teacher I've ever had. He makes concepts so easy to understand. When I learnt AP microecon in high school, I didn't understand anything, but I almost got an A+ and understood everything with his teaching.
Has a visible passion for his position as a lecturer, integrates humor and intriguing real-world examples into his lessons, knows what students struggle with the most and spends a great deal of time demonstrating problems at appropriate speed. Could not have asked for a better lecturer.
Great man. Very intelligent, fairly good at explaining things, I enjoy his class and he dresses very well. The course structure is a little unforgiving but besides that he is a great professor. He could stand do add a curve or some buffer from the tests, but overall choosing DiIanni is a good choice
Like everyone is saying he really is a great teacher, but the grading rubric in this class is awful. Your grade is only based on 4 tests, 1st is 10%, 2nd 20%, 3 30%, final 40%. You really can't afford to mess up any, especially the final. Just be prepared for every test and make sure to study a few nights before and you should end up alright.
DiIanni is a great professor and knows how to lead the class. Although his grading system is horrible As mentioned below there are only 4 exams. You mess up on one, you're screwed for the rest. The other thing is that he provides no curves for the exams which is really annoying. It'd be nice for him to do some review sessions for all the exams.
This was one of the first Econ courses that I actually enjoyed. Diianni is a great speaker and explained concepts very well. Lecture content is important but I did well on the tests because I also read the book. Only 4 exams & nothing else= STUDY STUDY STUDY!
He might be good at explaining thing, but be prepared to be screwed on the exam. I study a lot, really A LOT. I did all the practice exams, practice questions, quizzes, so I seemed prepared. NO WAY. He would give you some questions that he barely mentioned in class. If you care about the grade, do not take him. He does not give you extra points.
Very difficult class. Easily got A's in Econ 102 and 103, struggling in Econ 302. Take with someone else if possible.
Excellent speaker that makes the content and its applications very clear. Always willing to help you outside of class if you're willing to ask. Four tests that are not necessarily easy but do not cover anything that is not in lecture. Test grades usually average between 75-85 for the class.
Hes an awesome speaker! I can stress enough that he knows how to explain everything perfectly. But that grading system is ridiculous. Four exams is the only thing he has. There's a multiple choice potion and fill in the blank. Fill in the blank is easy, but the multiple choice part doesnt mess around.
I love diIanni!!! He is so articulate which makes you enjoy his teaching and lectures as a whole!! Even though people say the exams hard, I think as long as you study and understand the content, you will be fine!!!
DiIanni is a great teacher. His explanations are crystal clear and he is passionate and articulate about the subject. He is one of the most respectful professors I have had toward students. Be warned though, this class is TOUGH. The exams are cumulative and brutal. Going to lecture alone won't get you an A. You MUST study a lot on your own time
Diianni is the most polished lecturer I've ever had. His lectures, although boring at times, were full of knowledge. The class is difficult and you must do well on all four exams to get an A in the class. Purchase the optional study book and that will help you study a lot more than just looking over the PowerPoints.
Diianni is the most helpful and articulate professor I have ever seen in the U of I. He makes the class interesting and much easier for students to understand. There are a large amount of materials in ECON 302, and you have to go to every lecture and take good notes. Exams are all cumulative, and be sure to do the online practice quizzes.
Favorite teacher! The material you needed to know was well put together and clear. You need to study for the tests but the material itself was basic micro with more math.
Very good professor who is passionate and loves teaching. He is very clear with his explanations and if you do not understand he will take the time to answer your question. One downside is the grading system is based on 4 exams. His exams are challenging, but fair. Buy his workbook! It helps a lot for the exams.
Best Professor I have ever encountered in U of I.
He's a great professor. He takes students questions seriously and WANTS the students to understand the information. He always stops through confusing parts and asks the students for clarifying questions constantly. Study for the exams. His review book really helps and has several practice exams. I would recommend this class with him.
I had him for for two courses. He is one of the best instructor I've ever had in Econ. He explains so clear! and his materials are really helpful to understand economics. Plus easy exams. But although no mandatory attendance, you better go to every lecture because he doesn't have any helpful slides.
Best professor I've had so far. You can tell he's genuinely interested in the content and, furthermore, he cares deeply about the success of every student. He is always willing to answer questions and is very helpful. The workbook was helpful for the midterms since it had old midterms and finals in it. Worth the investment.
Exams are kinda hard and leave little room for error, since there is no partial credit on the free response. He's a nice guy, fair, and a decent teacher, although class is rather boring. Almost no extra credit, no curve. Doing well on the later exams is a must.
Not a fan of his grading system. I think it hurts more people than it helps. Highly recommend going to lecture even though it's not mandatory bc he doesn't save his ppt ink annotations for the slides he posts online. If it motivates you, he always wears a dapper outfit to look forward to.
Easy A class!
Not in favor of his grading system. Exams are comprehensive and each occupies more percentage. Exam 1:10%,Exam 2:20,Exam 3:25%. You should focus on multiple-choice questions, subjective part is just some easy calculations. Don't be too over-confident with yourself because he will screw you up in Exam 3. Got A's for all my other classes except this.
I had him for 302 and 490, I'm a senior and he's the best professor I've had on campus by a very wide margin. Best dressed as well. He's a very pro-free market, anti gov regulation guy, which is great. 490 was very easy, just a short free response paper once a week and free response final exam. Go to every lecture, take notes, you'l be golden.
Absolutely love this professor. A must take if you are an econ student. This was my second class with the professor and loved how clear and easy to understand the class was. If you put in the time and effort, you can get the grade you want. Very fair and always wants to listen to feedback as well. Probably my favorite professor of 4 years.
Professor Diianni is one of the best professors teaching at UoI. He is a great lecturer, helpful and friendly. He is always there for anything students need and knows his material and makes sure you learn it well too. Definitely recommend this professor and his classes.
Makes difficult topics not only understandable, but palatable. Very personable, knowledgeable (can immediately come up with practical examples to fit arcane suggestions from students), and highly professional in presentation. The best teacher for the hardest class a UIUC business student will take.
This is the right professor to take if you want an easy A in your Econs classes. No curve, some extra credit, and easy tests.
Best professor ever! Very clear in lecture. The materials are a little hard, but no effort needed if you go to his lecture and pay attention. The midterms are fair and very similar to past exams. Get the workbook, it is very helpful for review. I will definitely take more classes with him if possible. BTW, best dressed professor as well.
BUY work book and you will be fine
Best professor ever at UIUC. After taking this class, I decided to double major in Econ. The lectures are not mandatory, but I learnt a lot. Did not study or read the textbook after class. Did a few past exams on the workbook. This is a class where your hard work pays off, not saying it's easy. Best outfit as well
Difficult class but this is the best teacher you can pick. exams get harder throughout the semester so do not put off studying for this course
His lectures are very insightful and keeps me interested to learn more. I like it that there is no homework and the quizzes have unlimited attempts. Best dressed professor who is passionate about his work
Honestly, take Vasquez. DiIanni is a nice guy, but couldn't care less about your grade. Even if you go to all of the lectures and put in effort, he's going to give you the same amount of care as the people who don't go to class. To him, students are scantrons. He's a nice guy, but the class is honestly not worth it.
He is a very solid lecturer: he is clear, concise and keeps lectures interesting enough (if you have even the slightest interest in Economics). He tests are straightforward and entirely based on lecture material; you don't have to attend discussion to do well. Go to lecture and buy his workbook to study for exams and you'll get an A.
very funny and clear lectures. so far my favourite professor.
Best professor!!!!!!!
Took 102 with him. Loved how much extra information he put into the lectures. They don't appear on the exams. They're just interesting historical or current facts related to the topic. Honestly, I go to lectures, even though they weren't mandatory, because I was keen to learn new stuff. Not an econ major, but I definitely learned a lot from him.
Not bad, tests are sometimes pretty tough. Couple of tricks here and there, but if you buy the workbook, you should be good (it has a lot of past midterm exams and practice problems with solutions)
Just show up to the lecture and study the past exams and you are almost guaranteed an A in this class.
Tough grader. I spent tons of time there but got a B+ finally.
This class was pretty easy, even if you have never seen anything related to economics before. Professor DiIanni clearly goes through everything needed and even uses and online textbook (which isn't necessary). Some lectures seem long and not worthy of your time, but it's hard to guess which ones those are.
Amazing professor in just about every way. Class was super easy but you do have to attend lecture or it won't be as easy because he doesn't put complete lectures online. However if you do attend his lectures are super interesting with lots of cool real world examples and makes the class an easy A!
He is the best teacher I've had in my life, and my best professor of my first semester at UIUC. He answers any questions you have, anything he doesn't have time to cover in lecture will not be on the exams. I wish I would have gone to his office hours to just talk about life. Amazing professor, very respectable, and dresses for success every day.
Isaac is a great lecturer, but the exams can be really tough. You will have to complete your workbook, or you will not get a good grade.
Got me interested into economics. You can really learn something from his lectures and you will receive an easy A at the same time. Pick him if you can.
He loves to teach and is one of the best, you don't mind going to his class.
One of the best professors I meet. Easy to get an A. Discussion section helped me a lot.
Expect difficult exams.
Fantastic, very intelligent professor. He really goes out of his way to make sure student fully understand the material, and supplements normally boring models with much more interesting real world examples. If you study, then you'll probably do fine in the class.
Best lecturer I had in my first year. He gives various examples in class to help students understand the material. Exams are pretty easy too.
Very nice guy, lectures are very interesting and not mandatory, however if you miss few lectures it would be hard to follow new material. Quizzes are every week, but you have unlimited attempts. Midterms are a little bit tough, but if you were good with midterms , the final exam would be super easy.
He is terrible and does not give one care about the students.
He is really awesome lecturer. I hated economics before I took his class, but he just explains it so well that I plan to take more economics classes. He is really cool, great great lecturer. Exams are not at all difficult if you go to class and take notes. Take him instead of Vasquez if you truly want to learn economics.
Lectures can drag on some lessons, but does his best to make Economics interesting. You should still attend lecture even though they aren't mandatory and no iClickers. His optional workbook should be mandatory. Overall, the class is not difficult and becomes exceptionally easy when you use the workbook to study. Would recommend this class.
Took this as a mechanical engineering technical elective. He is a great professor. No homework, online unlimited try quizzes, exams are just like the old exams. Buy the workbook and do the old exams in it and you'll get an A
Have a lot of respect for this guy. The class is't bad. He provides a workbook which has everything you need to know and practice exams. Its not a complete easy A, but if you do the workbook, you will be set. Lectures are pretty important but he posts his power points online too. Discussions don't matter- only good for extra points.
Great professor! Great lecturer! Make you interested in Econ!
Spends a bit of time debunking liberal myths ('There are more poor people in US than in Europe', 'labor unions are good' etc.). One point extra credit for taking a survey or something. Honestly most of it is just simple math, some intuition and definitions. You can skip midterms and get the weight shifted (beware). Use the workbook and pract. exams
He's cool. Class was easy. Background on me, I got an A-/B+ and 5 on AP Macro. I didn't have to study at all. Went to lecture, took notes, went to discussion and did readings. Fair grading policies with missed midterms. Studied with the practice exams in the workbook and nothing else. That workbook is worth it. Online textbook, didn't use.
Great professor lots of freedom of attendance, exams, quizzes, and discussions. Not boring at all so focusing won't be a problem. Should pass the class with an A or B anything less is just piss poor effort.
Professor DiIanni is a gifted lecturer and knowledgeable on many economic topics. He explains concepts and answers questions clearly and effectively. ECON 102 is a breeze so long as you review the previous years' exam solutions, which are readily available in your course packet. His impeccable wardrobe is also a plus.
I thought his lectures drug on and on. While he certainly is brilliant, he has a tendency to over-explain simple topics to the point of confusing. The flip-side is that he loves to help students during office hours. A little pompous, but overall a good guy. Avoid him at the sub-400 level; take him for 400-level courses. He's much better there.
He was an OK lecturer, I guess success is based on the TA. Lecture material kind of matched the exam, but I was blindsided a lot.
There's 3 midterms and a final. DiIanni is super chill, so you can skip any (or all) of the midterms, and the weight of that exam will be put on your final. He also gives past exams and how to do math problems in his workbook, so you don't really need to go to class (but graphs aren't provided). He offers a good amount of extra credit too!
ECON 102 was fairly easy, if you buy the workbook and do the old exams then the actual ones are very similar. You can tell that DiIanni is very passionate about the subject, however lectures could get a little boring. Basically as long as you do the work book then you should get an A, don't bother getting the actual textbook
Diianni is a great professor and clearly a great guy. He knows so much about the world of Economics and is great at giving real life examples to explain the material taught in class. The class, however, is quite difficult. The exams are similar to the previous exams, but a few questions tripped me up. The final exam my semester was extremely hard.
Very approachable. Gives a different insight into economic thinking than most professors offer. Challenges and expands your own thinking.
Econ-302 with him is neither the hardest nor the easiest class that I have taken. Professor Dianni is an excellent teacher and he is very knowledgeable about economic issues. He is also very approachable to students, but he has very strong opinions on economic issues, opinions with which some students might disagree.
He's just awesome and very inspirational. Highly recommended if you want to learn.
You don't have to work too hard for an A in the class. Go to lectures and take notes because his tests are based on lecture. He has an optional workbook that contains past exams which are very similar every time. Don't count on them being the same every time but I'd say half of the questions are used from previous midterms/exams.
Best dressed professor on campus. Very relevant material, even though he's often outspoken. Very calm and well-prepared. Knows how to deal with a lot of nonsense.
A wonderful person and even better professor. This class was so enjoyable not only because of the material, but the way in which it was delivered. You really can't go wrong with DiIanni.
Best Economics professor I've ever had. He explains concepts in such a crystal-clear way and is fun to talk to outside of class is well! The exams are tough but the quizzes are super easy (answers are online). 10/10 would take again.
Easy class! Exams are simple if you retake the practice quizzes and buy the optional workbook (almost all the test questions come from these two sources). DiIanni is very knowledgeable and truly cares about whether his students understand the material or not. Lectures are interesting and his real-world examples help so much.
DiIanni is awesome. He makes the material very easy to understand and provides tons of examples. As long as you attend lectures and do the practice problems, you'll be fine. I have heard for this class, though, Vazquez is much much easier but DiIanni is a better teacher. I would definitely take this class with him again.
Dilanni is a great econ professor. Attendance was not mandatory for lectures but, you will not understand the material in discussions or during exams if you don't go. The optional workbook is an absolute lifesaver and definitely worth the money. The workbook has three practice exams for each test and are very similar to the ones he'll give you.
Amazing professor. Lectures clearly explain important concepts. Exams are very straight forward and based on completely on content reviewed in lectures or through online quizzes. Skip Vasquez and take Dilanni if you're a business major and actually need an adequate foundation in econ for upper-level classes.
Isaac is a great professor, I really enjoyed his lectures! Really cool guy go to office hours and I recommend getting the workbook for his class, super helpful!
Prof. DiIanni is one of my favorite professors on this campus! I had him for 102 and then chose to take him again for 302. He's really great at explaining and is very approachable. You can tell he has a passion for teaching and economics. I wish I could take more classes with him!!
He is a great professor and is amazing at teaching econ. He is willing to help his students if they are struggling. Going to lecture and paying attention is #1 priority. Go to lecture, pay attention, write down definitions given, and get an easy A/B
Best professor ever, he has some humor as well, the workbook helped a great deal. I wasn't that good at his class but it was interesting, I learned a lot and I would take it again!
Amazing lecturer! One of the best profs at UIUC. He is so knowledgable and passionate about econ. Definitely buy the workbook, it's an absolute lifesaver! Tests are straightforward. You must go to every single lecture and pay attention to understand the material. Discussion sessions are useful. Don't miss the online quizzes!
Professor DiIanni's ECON102 is an intimidating size, however, if you thrive in a large lecture-style course it's a great choice. He covers topics extremely thoroughly and though there are no repercussions for skipping lectures, I don't know how anyone would pass without showing up. The readings are odd but die down a couple of weeks in.
Prof. DiIanni teaches really well. He is prepared for each lecture, and he can explain clearly. Textbook is not really required, as no readings will be tested. But some discussion readings will be quizzed, and they're unrelated to lecture materials! Three midterms, not too hard, if you study for practice problems in the workbook. Buy the workbook!
Diianni was an amazing professor for ECON102. His custom workbook was super helpful in preparing for his exams. Attendance isn't mandatory, but going to class made studying so much easier. He explains everything clearly and provides so many examples. I learned a lot and I definitely recommend taking his class!
- Compared to Vasquez, yes, Diianni's class is much harder, but actually learning the content in ECON102 makes other classes much easier (good fundamentals) - BUY THE CUSTOM TEXTBOOK. Easily the best investment I have made in college, with tests from previous semesters (many repeated questions) and step-by-step solutions to walk through problems
He was a good professor but he needs to check his ego. I took him the semester the world went crazy due to covid and he was very abrasive about the issue and acted like his class was the most important thing in the world. He is very smart and explains things well. however, he is very arrogant.
Agree with the poster below abt the arrogance; to make such bold statements on a disease no one knew much abt was yikes. He's a decent prof, but judge him & what he says for yourself. Lol is what he saying normative or positive? Take his 400 class if you REALLY like U.S. history. I learned to read better, but the content was very specific and dull.
You can easily tell that this professor is passionate about what he is teaching. His lectures are easy to follow and he gives plenty of good analogies to help you understand difficult concepts. He is very fair in the types of questions he asks in homework and quizzes. I would definitely take a class with him again in the future!
DiIanni teaches this class so well. Econ is a breeze with him. He has his own typed up chapters to take notes from which are very clear and great for explaining the concepts. Each chapter has a HW & quiz that allow multiple attempts. 70% of grade is exams but they're not bad and give you more than enough time. A very caring and passionate prof!
His online course was very well structured and easy to follow. Granted it was an introductory course, it was still a smooth experience.
Amazing
Three midterms and one final- plus weekly homework that was like six multiple-choice questions, as well as a ton of modules that had quizzes. I believe I did the weekly homework and the midterms, as well as the final which replaced all of the grades for the module based quizzes. Not much studying is necessary with a background in economics.
I had prof. dilanni for Econ 102 and 302 and he made both classes interesting and engaging without being too difficult and adapted the class well to the virtual environment.
Lectures are written out and you read the content each week. Not many communications from the professor other than the lecture intro videos. Discussion is optional.
This is my third time taking Isaac, but my first time taking him for an in-person. We had biweekly papers, seven in total. Not many people showed up to class but I found the lectures really interesting. He seemed really interested in what he was teaching and spent a good amount of time explaining underappreciated parts of American Economic History.
Easiest class I've ever taken. Probably could have finished the entire class in a day. Still, lectures were interesting and material was laid out well. Grading policies were very fair. Never showed up for discussion and still got A+ on all the midterms.
instead of lectures, wrote overviews. pretty easy class and low-stress. discussion is optional and I didn't go once
He was a good professor. His lectures were all slides on Compass, but he explained the purpose and concepts in well detail and if you didn't understand, you could pop into office hours and he would explain it until you understood. He also offers extra credit opportunities here and there, including a syllabus quiz at the beginning of the semester.
I took this SP21 online. Discussion is only for your benefit and you don't have to attend. All you have to do is read the weekly material and take the homeworks and quizzes. He seems to really love the material. You don't really have to have a good understanding of the material to do it. There are 3 exams and a final. None are proctored.
Took this class FA20. Lectures were partially written, partially recorded, and concepts aren't too tricky, even as someone who has never taken an Econ course before. Discussions are helpful. Not mandatory, but I would still recommend as it's nice to ask questions/clarify some things. Overall a solid class.
Professor DiIanni is a great lecturer and knows his stuff well. He's also down to talk about anything related to economics and policy during office hours beyond what's in the course. I just wish that his classes weren't so lecture-dependent, because there's no other source of information if you miss a lecture.
Professor Dilanni is one of those who would take time to talk to students. He replies to emails quickly and is friendly every time you speak with him. Lectures are straightforward with meaningful extensions. If you attend classes and use the workbook, it's an easy A. The only downside I can think of is most grades depend on tests.
Pretty cool guy, does a great job outlining the material. Exams are reasonable
Lectures are very boring and go off on tangents that don't provide any help to someone learning econ for the first time. TA review session is the only time where you really learn anything. The grading criteria is very test heavy where exams are 75 percent of your grade which seems a little excessive for gened and beginning econ class.
Dilanni is a very engaging lecturer, and provides many meaningful extensions in class that relate to our everyday lives. He does a great job of explaining things, and the discussion sections are also quite helpful. It is a very test-heavy class, but we also have chapter quizzes in which you have unlimited tries to get 100% which is very helpful.
Great professor
Incredibly generous Extra Credit, There are 2% ec opportunities on the syllabus, but in the middle of the semester, he offered another 1% ec opportunity, so there are 3% ec available in total. The class was super easy, I enjoyed taking this class with Dr. DiIanni, he is a super nice teacher. Exams are not too hard as well.
He's a nice guy. I've been to office hours a few times, and he was helpful. In my opinion, lectures are quite boring. Attendace wasn't required in lectures, but was required for discussion. I suggest buying the optional workbook since practice exams are similar with actual exams. You'd do good if you do the practice exams on the optional workbook.
Take Professor Dilanni! Clearly explained all the concepts, you just need to listen very carefully and take good notes. Buy his textbook! Although it is not required, the exam questions are literally taken from the previous exams. Overall, really great professor.
Loved his lectures
Good instructor
Isaac DiIanni is simply inspirational. Great guy who cares about and knows his Economics through and through. Would recommend anyone needing to take Econ 102 to have him as the instructor.
Dull lectures. Simple class.
Easy class. Discussion sections were 100% optional, and the exams were easy enough. As long as you go to most of the lectures and pay attention, you'll be fine.
Dilanni is a great and very interesting lecturer. Class is easy although be careful since 75% of grade is made up of 4 exams so one bad day will tank your grade but the exams are fairly easy. I do wish he posted recorded lectures cause I was sick one week and missed lecture and felt pretty lost on the material covered that week
The Goat.
The content of this class is very interesting which combined with his skills as a lecturer make for a very good class. You have to go to lecture though, every time, and pay attention and take notes. 60% of your grade is exams, of which there are two, and your only study guide is going to lecture. So yeah, a little tough but great material.
If you're having difficulty sleeping, his lectures are the antidote. You have to squeeze a lemon on your wound to stay awake, but you also need to pay attention because his notes are important for the exam. For a 100 level class, it took too much study time from me. He also has no respect for his CAs. I saw him yell at one of them during my final.
Pretty lecture heavy but I ended up enjoying going to class. He's very good at explaining things so as long as you pay attention, take notes, do the homework, and study enough, you should do just fine.
This man uses this class to spout his own Libertarian political beliefs, and he spent whole lectures dedicated to criticizing policies. One of them boiled down to 'unions are bad and their members are violent'. The class was super easy, but his lectures were really annoying so you can just teach yourself the material with the optional workbook.
This class is quite a bit of work and studying, with pretty high stakes tests - but the lectures combined with the discussion sections taught me a lot. I really did like this course and the professor is very good at making the lectures interesting.
A bit of a boring professor for lectures, kinda drones on but thankfully they aren't mandatory. Tests will basically determine your grade as there is really nothing else expect tests and online quizzes that are graded.
Isaac Dilanni is a great professor. I'm not an econ major but I would retake this class. His lectures are not mandatory, but you will struggle to catch up if you miss them. He explains course concepts extremely well and if you attend lectures and take the practice tests in the workbook, this will be an easy class for you.
Dilanni is a lecture-heavy professor but his lectures can be interesting at times. The material isn't too difficult and there is not a lot of work. Your tests have a lot of weight and the material is only accessible through lectures, which can sometimes be boring. The material is still self-teachable and discussions are optional.
Amazing lecturer throughout the course. Clearly outlined the grading policies on the first day: all 3 midterms are cumulative and optional, if you skip them your final exam grade will replace them. Online quizzes that are replaced by your final exam grade if it is higher than quiz grade. Buy the course book, it gives 3 sample tests for each exam.
I have not gone to a single lecture or discussion since the second week of class and i still breeze through the exams. just buy the textbook. literally so easy.
Has a bunch of poorly worded quiz questions and the online class isn't really taught. It's entirely independent reading of the lesson, then taking multiple choice quizzes and tests that are automatically graded. He's not so much of a teacher as he is the author of the lessons. He doesn't meet with students or have office hours. D+
Breaks down economic concepts the best out of any professor at UIUC. If I had him for my other econ courses I would have done far better. Going to lectures is really worth it and the homework load is very low.
Be ready to fall asleep in lectures because he is very monotone when lecturing and gives you barely any assignments besides some online quizzes due once every month. Had to retake this class for a grade replacement and it was even more boring/challenging then the first time I took the class cause it's so hard to care about the class.
Lectures can be dry, but the self-paced format works well. Exams are weighted heavily, so studying the practice tests in the textbook is key. unstuck study helped me review efficiently for the cumulative midterms.
Professor Dilanni is by far one of the best professors at UIUC! His lectures do a great job of breaking down every economic topic needed for the exams. Attendance is never mandatory and all his slides are available on canvas. His workbook is amazing and optional but I highly recommend it.
Lecture and discussion attendance is optional but can be helpful. Everything about the course is clearly outlined in the syllabus on the first day of class. There is no homework just the canvas quizzes and exams which are all easy, especially if you get the workbook. Best class I have ever taken, 10/10 recommend!!!
Great course, professor gives extra credit. Material is pretty easy and exams are just like the practice ones. Attendance is not mandatory for discussion and lecture. Office hours are helpful and the workbook makes studying really easy. Canvas quizzes are easy and can be taken as many times as needed, only highest score is used.
Great professor!! His lectures was really thoughtful and strongly related to the course content. The course is not hard, and the test is easy if you spend time to prepare it. The office hour was incredibly helpful.
Lectures were hit or miss depending on the day. Discussion sections seemed the most helpful for applying what we learned and preparing for quizzes/exams. He made me challenge the way I think of things, and often provides evidence for the claims he makes. I enjoyed his dry humor.
The class was interesting enough and he was a great lecturer. He was also a really nice guy but he will not extend deadlines or anything since it is such a big class. You really need to study for the exams by doing the practice exams in the workbook. I missed 2-4 questions on each exam and since the class was so exam heavy I just barely got an A.
Some test are unnecessarily difficult.
Lectures are a goldmine for test resources. Discussion sections go a bit fast but lecture makes up for it. Excellent teaching style and responsive to questions. Workbook and taking notes are essential to success. Quizzes are pretty representative of exam content. Decent amount of extra credit.
Funny lecturer but also very slow-paced.
Fantastic professor
I took this class in the Fall 2024 semester. If you go to most of the lectures and take notes, you can easily pass the class. There were optional review sessions before every exam. Professor Dilanni was easy to understand and was thorough throughout his lectures.
He is the goat
Great professor and teaches well. Normally I would be hurt that I got an 89.34 and didn't get rounded (he rounds if you have .5) so I got stuck with a B+. Yet he was a great professor, and the class isn't too hard. I just had a lot going on that semester so I'm still happy with my grade I got. Should be an easy A with him
COME TO LECTURE. If you don't go to discussion, honestly that's fine, but please dear God GO TO LECTURE. Dr. DiIanni explains it very clearly, even if he does talk for a while, everything will make sense if you just go to lecture. He's also a very sweet and understanding man if you ever get the chance to talk to him. I'd def take econ w him again.
One of my favorite professors to sit in lecture for. His class was engaging, and he made sure students had the chance to get clarification either in class or outside. I took it during election time and he was making sure we understood economics from a political standpoint to, but he doesn't make a specific political standpoint himself.
Good, easy lectures and EASY tests. Wants you to get a good, basic understanding of econ. Occasional tangents or interesting personal opinions at least give the lectures some variety
Lectures are incredibly clear and easy to understand, content heavy but digestible, homework is very manageable, takes care to make sure students understand and don't just memorize
He is so good
Great professor, lectures are very easy to follow along and understand. Can sometimes get fixated on topics but other than that gives lots of clear examples of the materials and makes it relevant.
The lectures can be a lot sometimes because so much is covered in every class. It is not technically attendance required but it's hard to pass if you skip. The professor wants his students to succeed and is accessible outside of class. No regrades on exams, unlimited attempts on quizzes, available extra credit. Workbook is helpful but not required.
This class is easy and should be a comfortable A. I would recommend DiIanni if you're interested in economics because he explains concepts well and uses real-life examples that are interesting if you care, but can be boring if you don't. Study up a little before each midterm, and you'll be fine. No need to buy the workbook either.
Professor DiIanni is a fantastic orator, and his lectures are always thought-provoking. He would often go beyond the slides and discuss real-world implications (like Mamdani's election and how that will affect the NY housing market). I always looked forward to going to his class.
Such a fun teacher, really passionate about economics. Tests are much simpler than lectures
Really passionate about economics, but lectures can be a bit boring at times. Midterms are much simpler than the lectures and there tend to be repeat questions on all midterms. Attendance isn't mandatory but highly recommend going as it's a little hard to learn on your own if you're not familiar to economics.
I would recommend buying the optional review book, the test questions are often copy-pasted from there. Minimal work outside of class needed. Attendance is optional so you'll be tempted to skip all the lectures, but I wouldn't recommend that because he covers the information in a way that goes beyond the canvas slideshows. Easy class, easy tests.
The class overall was not hard at all. He has two extra credit opportunities in the beginning of the semester, and he has quizzes for each lesson that are online and only 10 questions with unlimited time & attempts. GET THE WORKBOOK. The workbook practice questions were identical to actual exam questions. Lectures can be boring though :(
