TOTALLY HOT! I LOVE HIM! I LOVE HIM! He is a geinus, and SHARP dressed, too. SO DARN CUTE, i am in love. I LOVE YOU, DR. Ruedin. Ontologically, he defined me. I thought his accent was german, however... not russian ? TAKE HIS CLASS! A MUST!

this class is VERY difficult! my boyfriend took hs othr class and did better gradewise. but he is fair and a lot of fun to. the book is 2 confusing. i am happy i had Dr. Ruedin even tho my grade was not an a.

This guy's class was soooo easy i didnt even show up the last 3 weeks and got an A. He is super nice and assigns no homework. I definately recommend this guy to everyone.

Extremely unprofessional. If you want an instructor who inquires as to whether or not anyone in his class is under 21 and then proceeds to spend the entire period explaining Philosophy through the use of crude humor, this may be the one for you!

I took this class initially to fill 12 hrs because I registered late, but I fell in love with it. I always had a hard time understanding the text when I read it, but when we dicussed it in class, he always explained things clearly. I wish he taught other subjects so I could take more classes from him. He was interesting and unconventional.

he has a paper you have to wright and you have to read it in front of the class. he said its worth 30-40 percent of your grade. he said if you dont understand it you can come ask me and ill help you. i didnt understand it so i went to his office to get help and he said im not going to wright your paper for you. i had to drop the class.very unclear

Not a class for anyone who is looking for the easy way out. Dr. Ruedin makes you think, makes you laugh, and if you don't try in his class will make you mad. He's hilarious, charming and can I just say- SO SEXY! Put in the effort, read the text, show up for class, and you won't regret it!

I don't think he is cute!!!! He is hilarious though. He kept me laughing the entire class. As for the books that have to be read, I quit reading them because they made NO sense. They were way too wordy/complex/deep for a average reader like myself. Make sure you get on his good side. And don't take the class if you don't like talking about gays.

One of the worst teachers I ever had. I showed up to class regularly, knew the material, and he gave me an F. I should also add that my major is philosophy and am very familiar with the subject, however, despite the grade, I did learn a lot by taking the class, though I can't say any of it was thanks to the "professor". One word: Antagonist

Dr. Ruedin's a great guy and I enjoyed his lectures, but I would not recommend this class unless you had 101 or ethics with him. The readings are incredibly tedious and sometimes downright opaque. Nevertheless, if you are interested in Philosophy and a good student its worth taking.

Went into this class knowing NOTHING about philosophy, came out and now I could teach it!!! LOVE this man!! AMAZING instructor, makes lectures SOO fun and understanding..stopped reading the books because they were confusing, learned the info from him crystal clear. LOVED going to this class, takes hard work, so step up your A game. BEST instructor!

I enjoyed the readings and what i learned with minimal assistance from the professor. Sure he's funny but if you apply yourself you get no feedback. If your a blonde naive girl with little philosophy skill or conceptual knowledge, you'll get a great grade.

Very interesting and rewarding course. The teacher is eminently approachable, but also very serious about his subject matter. Take good notes, meet him in his office hours when you 're stuck on a paper, and DO NOT ENROLL WITH AN AGENDA OR AN EXPECTATION THAT YOU WON'T HAVE TO WORK. You will get out of this class precisely what you put into it.

I couldn't have asked for a better professor! He kept a class I thought would be boring VERY interesting. Though if you are easily offended I would be cautious as the material stirs people up. You will have to work and READ the books in order to succeed.

This teacher is great, after 3 years of SCCC he is one of the best. Very funny guy, while also makes you think alot. He is very flexable, but you better read the books if you want a easy class the next day. Biggest problem is how difficult it is to get an A. 1 pt = 1% of your final grade.

Ruedin is more of an actor than a professor. His classroom antics are indescribably unhelpful; he seems to think flamboyant gesticulations and mind-numbing vocal fluctuations are the best way to confer information to students, but ultimately these methods prove counterproductive. Do not trust this man :(

Awesome professor! The texts are hard for the most part but his delivery makes it understandable. He gives you a list of questions that may be on the exams but he will hold you accountable for your own learning which means he wont hand you the answers if you come to him with little knowledge. Which means you should go to his office to get clarity.

Dr. Ruedin is amazing and makes difficult material easy to understand with an enthusiasm not found in most professors. I always looked forward to attending class and appreciated the comprehensiveness of the selected texts. It was a pleasure to learn from such a gifted mind, and I wish I could take more of his classes.

Best teacher ever. I have now decided to be a philosophy professor and am currently working on reading every philosophy book i can get my hands on. I am transferring to Lindenwood in the fall but am actually gonna come back just to take more classes with him.

Ruedin is very animated and he makes crude jokes ALOT. This is not an easy course. 1 point equals 1% of your grade. There is alot of reading and you must do it in order to pass. You also have to give a presentation in from of the class and your peers get to drill you with questions afterwards. He is arrogant, self-centered and illogical.

Ruedin is a very good at lecturing. He is animated and keeps students engaged. The guidelinnes for the presentation are not clear so it is best to talk to him before you write it up. Also, he is pompus and arrogant. Overall good class but I wouldnt recommend it unless you enjoy reading and being grilled by the instructor.

No offense to the person that commented prior to me, but ethics is philosophy. so of course that what he talks about. thats a horrible reason not to like his class. Plus, can you really blame his attitude...he knows darn well that the majority doesn't care and will never take another philosophy course. he's a good teacher, leave him alone.

He tries to keep lectures as interesting as possible, sometimes this makes them confusing though. You are required to do a ridiculous amount of HARD confusing reading. Don't take the class unless you are very committed to lots and lots of reading. Must take TONS of time to study!! Fun guy, not so great at teaching.

This was my second class with Dr R. He is still, in my opinion, the best prof. on campus. The subject matter is advanced, but he makes it discernible and fun. He is dedicated to his students and you can see it in the effort he puts into each lecture. Students should not miss an opportunity to take a course from him.

He is really good but he keeps you on your toes. Read, go to class, ask questions, talk to him personally, and then give it your ALL. This was not the easiest A for me, but it was my best A yet. This class is not for the faint of heart...and when you think you are done reading, READ SOME MORE.

Omg, this guy is a terrible professor. Rude, pompous, arrogant, and disrespectful towards his students. I read philosophy and ethic based books daily. The course was interesting, but the professor was ridiculous! Unless you agree with everything the professor says or are completely clueless about Ethics, do not take this professor!

LOVED this professor. I had five classes this semester and his was by far my favorite. He's engaging, funny, and excited about the subject. Yes, the presentation is tough, and he'll keep you on your toes with a lot of in-class questions. But the subject is Philosophy- it's going to be harder to grasp regardless. Take his course if you can!

One of the best teachers I've had. Engaging and funny, lecture doesn't feel like a lecture. The difficulty of his class forces you to read and study, but is so rewarding. I wear my A as a badge of honor, and am extremely satisfied. What you put in is exactly what you take out. Besides, I now use philosphy in daily life more than any other subject!

BAD CHOICE! You have to buy and read about 10 books that are hard to comprehend. When he explains the books and you take notes- when answering the test questions from the notes- THE ANSWERS WILL BE WRONG. Too much work for a bad grade!

This professor is very demanding and your grade is based on a midterm and final exam. This is a very hard class and I do NOT recommend this professor. Also he is a type of professor that is very held up on his PhD.

Had to drop his class in fear of failing...and I have a 4.0! He would mark wrong test answers that were exact from my notes (his words) and would mark off more points than the actual question was worth.

Dr. Ruedin is not nearly as most of these reviews make him out to be. Yes, the class is hard, but DO THE READING and you'll be fine. Also, TAKE NOTES. Seems like a simple concept, taking notes in college, but the majority of people who dropped the class never did.

Professor Ruedin has to be one of the best teachers I have ever had. Philosophy is a difficult subject but he is such an enthusiastic and interactive teacher. He truly loves the subject which makes you love it too! He is my last class of the day when I'm usually tired out and he still manages to keep interested dispite my horrible attention span!

This class was amazing!!! I missed the first three classes and thought I was going to fail, but my midterm grade was an A. You can seriously read or sparknote the books as long as you are interested and are active in class he likes you. He cracks me up he is so funny and his clothes match his personality. It is a great class and he makes it fun.

As others have said, philosophy is a very hard subject. However, Ruedin makes the subject matter easy to digest and is very enthusiastic. You can tell he really loves philosophy and loves teaching it. Read the books (or even sparknote them) and take notes and you will succeed in his class.

I hated philosophy before this class. The passion that Ruedin has for his study radiates throughout his lessons. I found his energy to be inspiring, and I now enjoy reading philosophy in my free time. Wonderful teacher.

If you have even a passing thought at taking a Philosophy course at SCC, by all means, take this one. Dr. Ruedin is suave in both the teaching and fashion sense, thus learning this courses thought provoking topics becomes a great joy. Give a second thought to the material Dr. Ruedin teaches and you will find yourself cultivating new perspectives.

I am a decent student, never had to drop a class or anything, and his class will be my first one that I've withdrawn from. If you dont have a high level of comprehension and an interest in philosophy at all, do not take him. He is funny but doesn't like to help students if he thinks they arent trying.

I had another teacher for this class but switched it after the first day. The other teacher will put you sleep. Ruedin makes a normally boring class really interesting and engaging. One of the best teachers I've ever had. He is fun and exciting and hilarious. He has a bit of a harsh and sarcastic humor which people misunderstand as "being picked on" when he's just having fun. Philosophy is a hard class but he makes every effort possible to help you understand it and is proud when you do. He is engaging and helpful. Loved him!

Dr. Ruedin was a great teacher for this class. The course material is extremely difficult but I found that I could understand it after his lectures. Dr. Ruedin is highly knowledgeable in his field and teaches with enthusiasm and clarity. This is not an easy class (lots of reading), but if you DO the reading and pay attention to the class, you will pass. Great class, lots and lots of reading is the only down side. Text is difficult, but is explained very clearly in class. He uses diagrams to illustrate thoughts and ideas. This class will help your writing and public speaking skills, amongst many more. It is a class that is challenging and has had a major impact on my life.

Took intro to Philosophy. Very enthusiastic teacher. I thought he was hilarious and a great teacher. His tests are just a few, loaded essays questions, but he gives you the possible test questions in advance. I stopped reading midway through the class, but attended every lecture and recieved an A. Not an easy A. Don't miss lecture!

(I wrote this once before, but somehow it was removed. So I will say it again.) Anyone can learn philosophy, but this class isn't for everyone; neither is majoring in this field. If you don't need a philosophy class to graduate don't take it. Save your time and money and just be happy. Please heed this warning people.

He was awful!! He assigns multiple books for you to read and expects you to know understand them, and you don't. Then has you complete a study guide for the final and midterm. However, he won't help you if you ask for help on it. The only points in his class is final, midterm, and a 20 point paper. The whole class is only 100 points. DONT RECOMMEND

This instructor was completely awesome. You cannot however be a lazy bum in this class you do have to work. As long as you are willing to put the time and effort into the course you should use this instructor for philosophy. He does his best to help you understand the material and you can tel he really cares about his students. This dude is awesome

Dr. Ruedin made this class. I actually looked forward to coming- he was hilarious but also went deep into the subject, which made me like philosophy. As long as you come to every class and utilize the timediscussions IN CLASS (Google won't help you later, trust me) you'll get an A. Take good notes! If you're easily offended, don't take him.

Don't go into class thinking that you can just sit around and not participate in discussions. You will. Or he will make you sit there and feel awkward and constantly try to engage you anyways- you might as well jump in. It's worth it and makes the class more interesting.

You are assigned to read multiple books and most of them are really hard to follow. Try anyways- He will go over everything during discussion. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Study groups help- so make some friends. Miss a class and you will miss important info. The only issue I had with his philosophy was that he did not have his own.

Very confusing online schedule and when I asked to clarify he replied very rudely and sarcastic. I am a straight A student and never had any problems with any teachers besides this one. Not to mention there is no textbook, you have to read a list of books (and find them yourself), and the reading is very fast paced. Don't take if you don't have to.

Ruedin is a great professor, he gets really into his lectures and will drag you in with his way of words. You must attend class in order to understand the reading. There is only 100 points in the whole class, a paper, midterm, final and participation. Overall I loved his class

He's amazing, I can't say it enough. He's funny and I love him. I will warn you, do NOT be offended by anything He says. If you have a soft spot about sarcasm and mock humor. I enjoyed his PHL 101 class so much that I am currently in another one of his classes. He is super funny and a very enjoyable professor. Be sure to show up to class. The study guides he provides have EXACT questions that are on the tests. If you are looking for a blow off, do not take. He is my favorite professor I've ever had.

He is an awful teacher. When one asks for help, he usually gives a smart ass remark back to them. There are three grades the WHOLE semester. That's it. I have all A's in my other classes, except this one. I would not recommended this professor to anyone. He is a ridiculously tough grader. He takes points off for no logical reason, seriously!

I love him! He is a tough teacher, but makes the class so enjoyable. Very energetic during lectures, also VERY sarcastic. I had to buy 9 books for this class. Which means I spent lots of time at the book store returning the 9 books when I promptly dropped it. Entire class is 100 points and is based on 3 assignments. If he asks a question you can never get it right. ever. EVER! Even if you had what he was looking for he will come up with some reason why you are wrong.

After failing my midterm, I asked him if I could stop by during his office hours to have him look over my study guide for the final and tell me if my answers were what he was looking for . He looked at, took a deep breath, and said, "no." This example perfectly states how helpful he is. I would not recommend his class to any of my friends.

This guy is an amazing teacher. I would take him again. Yes, I failed. He has a lot of reading material. A lot. It is very easy to mix up philosophers not to mention my test anxiety. Two exams and one oral presentation leave for little error. Although, I failed i can clearly understand and apply philosophy to everyday life. Great teacher.

He is probably my favorite professor at scc. I dreaded having to take philosophy but now i look forward to going to his class everyday! He is hilarious and makes it fun and really takes the time to get to know every single one of his students. There are a lot of books but honestly i just read spark notes and went to class and im doing great.

Ruedin was an amazing teacher. All of the negative rating on here are misleading. He expects you to put in college level work. You are graded on on a final, midterm, paper, and participation. This was the first class that I felt was worth my money. He is able to teach complex and heavy books in an understandable way. He is also hilarious.

Don't be confused by the hate! Ruedin is one of my favorite teachers ever. His lectures are amazing; definitely show up. Theres only three grades in the class; midterm, paper, and final. He explains things in great detail, is extremely funny, and has an answer for everything. Read, go over the study guide in great detail, visit his office, easy A.

This class was awful the whole class is worth 100 points total. Some of his grading is questionable because he wrote my grade at the top of a couple of my papers but wasnt the correct grade at all. Just confusing if you ask me !! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS !! Very lecture heavy!! Just dont do it

There are only two downsides to his class You need multiple textbooks (all $25 and under) and he is a tough grader. Other than that Dr Ruedin is super funny and his lectures are actually fun to attend. I knew nothing about ethics when I took this course but he made it very easy to understand. Hes a super nice guy and is willing to work with you.

Changed my life. I can say this confidently, having had him 10 years ago. Ruedin is engaging, but challenging. He wanted us to read, but didnt make us. He made us think, leaving us wanting to read. I have since read more philosophy as an adult than I ever had in any class. With a pencil drop, Ruedin instilled a love of philosophy- beyond romance.

Professor Ruedin is unhelpful and disrespectful. 9 books were required, in which we ended up not using the 9th book. He only gives 100 points the whole semester which doesnt allow much room for error. Very tough grader. Ignored my emails when I needed direction.

A total mixed bag. Very enthusiastic about his material, but very rude and unhelpful as a person. You'd either love him or hate him. Don't take his class just for credit -- he's very challenging. He's hilarious while teaching, but that cuts both ways -- when asking him for help, he rarely gives anything but snide remarks. I personally wasn't a fan.

lots of reading from actual books instead of textbooks. every week we were expected to submit answers to questions that weren't graded, and the only three grades came from the midterm, a paper, and the final. the paper was dropped due to COVID but that made it even harder to get a good grade. his lectures are hilarious and stick with you.

This man was a jerk. He marked you absent for attendance if you were 10 seconds late. No joke. We had three assignments for the entire semester. Hardest class I ever took. You won't pass his final unless you study for half the semester straight. He gave me a 0/5 on attendance because I missed three classes. Plus what he teaches is straight baloney.

Hardest grader and dont think of trying to contact him because he wont email back even if you are trying to understand what you did wrong. Very few grades are put in to the grade book so if you do bad on the midterm like I did then you have to work your butt off trying to pass the final otherwise you will fail. I dropped the class. One of the worst ways I've ever seen a teacher conduct a course. Books are hard to follow. He only takes grades for mid-term and final and there were written exams that were basically just up to his interpretation to grade. Does NOT respond or read emails. Don't take this class unless you like to read about philosophers.

He was the worst professor I've ever had, so unhelpful, and when I reached for help, he was rude and insulting. Most people were consistently failing his quizzes, and he still offered no guidance and kept his direction unclear. I don't recommend this class if you don't have to take it.

He made it easy to understand the first two books and made class an enjoyable experience for a bit. However, later on, his lectures became a lot harder to understand. He gave no feedback or review over the midterm. A good portion of the class has dropped the course. He's made extremely offensive comments in class, especially about trans people.

Do not take this course! Dr. Ruedin appeared to have all of the qualities of a good professor, but that view quickly changed. He does not respond to your messages on canvas. His grading does not correlate with the questions that he asks you in his assignments. It is 100% a smarter decision to go with a different and more professional professor!

There are only a handful of grades that go in the gradebook in this class, so it's stressful because missing only a handful of points can really impact your grade. He does provide a little feedback on the quizzes you take, but none on the midterm or final. The readings are difficult to understand, so I highly recommend watching his lecture videos.

This professor provides arbitrary grades with little to no feed back. Your best bet in his course is to regurgitate his opinions onto the assignments as he is quite partial to his and only his point of view. Which is hilarious considering its philosophy. He is also quite passive aggressive. If I could give him a zero, I would.

-EXTREMELY hard grader with no rubric to guide you. You can have everything he asked for and he'd still have a issue. -Doesn't respond to emails. Ruedin is awful. I took an online course and read the books and used the resources and fully put in the effort but he still haven't gave me my full points. He always says dig deeper when I try and the resources provided aren't helpful. I emailed him one time and I was respectful & he said I was disrespectful and unprofessional. Don't get him!

Ruedin, while being upfront with the grading and feedback expectations, is more obstinate and headstrong than I would expect a professor to be. That could just be with the online course, but with the lack of effective feedback on the many small-point assignments and overwhelming weight put upon the mid-term/final, I would hesitate to recommend him.

I took Ruedin my first semester fearful that he would be scary based on his reviews, however, I learned so much in his class. Taking him in person is a much better considering he's much more eager to answer questions and ready to talk about philosophy. Only problem is I had 3 grades. 50% for the final, 40% for midterm, 10% for participation.

I took both PHIL101 and Ethics with Ruedin circa 2009. I went on to major in Philosophy and attend law school. He's still the best professor I've taken to this day. He is tough, but he does not expect perfection. He expects you to do the reading, show up for class, and participate. If you do that and make a genuine effort, you will do fine.

He is very enthusiastic, but confronts you about problems (like showing up late) in front of the class, when I feel it should be a one-on-one discussion. I would highly recommend taking good notes as they help you study and answer questions better. Participation also helps if you're confused about something.
