not clear in class, but very helpful and clear one-on-one
Very hard to understand in class, go to his office he will help one on one
Very helpful, need to do homework to do well on the tests.
HW is part of test grade & only counts MC on the final
Very helpful when you go to his office. Sometimes hard to understand in class, but he will help you one on one.
Not sure whether it's the professor or the material that's so bad. I went to class and I still had no idea what he was talking about half the time. Don't take him unless you have to.
Always has time for students outside of class, will try to help one on one. Counts homework as part of test grade and allows you to use equation sheets on tests, still need to study and do HW. Get the study guide for this course ISBN: 0-201-77013-X.
Very unfair and difficult teacher. He is hard to understand in class and gives tests without informing the students. Do not take for statistics!
This class is pretty hard. You really have to read the book and go to class if you want to understand anything. He is a nice teacher and will help if you ask.
Very good professor; He always has time to help a sudent in difficulties; probably the best in the Maths Department
LOOK FOR OLD TESTS!!! he gives similar old tests! i din't understand anything in the class yet i got an A!!! the HW would effect ur test grade.. so u might wanna DO the HW (it counts towrd ur test) anywayz.. good luck =)
Ok..find old test and HW for at least 3 sem. before. He even tells you in class you can use old test and HWs. You can use everything on test. Only grades are 3 test, which 20-40% of are HW. Pretty easy if you have older test.
Worse math teacher I ever had. Homework is 50% of your test grades. Find old hmws and old tests but don't forget to study the hmw in the book. Hard to understand.Short hand writes and than erases everything after he writes it!
hate this class with a passion, if you don't go see him, you don't do well in his class!! hw is stuff you've never seen before but still counts for 1/2 of the test
Ok, the real...Don't waste your time even going to class. You will quickly see how to ace his class. ACED it, no final, piece of cake. Wish i hadn't wasted my time in his class though. Seriously, he doesn't stop, doesn't speak to you, and doesn't teach you. And what the heck is a whalyou? Whatever, don't waste your time. You'll figure it out.
Course is a stats survey for engineers. Too much material in too short a time. You must complete the graded homework -- it counts for 50% of grade on in class exams. Prof. will help/correct HW until 100% if you demo effort and visit him in office. That almost assures an A or B.
had this been my first statistics class I would hate statistics... the class is totally uselessd if at all possible I advise you to take statistics at a community college before wasting your time in this class... he can't see read or hear and has a somewhat bad accent (value = walyou) ...if you must take his class just study the book to death
Gets tons of Chalk on hands. Don't sleep or he will make you clean the erasers. Hard to understand and makes the class too difficult
Horrible teacher. Accent, hard to understand. Doesn't use book much, though does assign problems each night, for discussion in next class, but not graded. Homework that is assigned for grading is difficult, it counts toward test grade. Would not recommend taking this teacher.
Deep DEEP Russian accent, make sure you have a good tutor on hand to help you through the course. You won't learn anything in class.
The professor really try to teach, but his method just sucks. The class is just too boring; I skip two weeks without going to class. Don't try to learn from the class, because you won't. Just try to learn the material by yourself, it would be easier that way.
Wow wow wow. I honestly could not tell the entire semester if he was speaking in russian or english. Factor in that when he writes on the board he fills it... FILLS it COMPLETEY then erases a hole in the middle and starts writing again so you have no idea whats going on. Avoid at all costs unless you want your GPA to burn.
Extremely boring!!!! Doesn't make class interesting so it is very hard to pay attention. Online tutorials are more helpful than class. He has a very strong accent that makes it hard to understand him at times.
Great guy very nice. Unfortunately he's a horrible professor. He has a strong russian accent, admits that the textbook is rubbish but continues to use it, and gives extremely hard homework that counts as 50% of your test grade for that section. (two hws per test) And don't expect tutors to help you, not one of them understood what the hw was asking
Ok, so the rank of the matrix is 3 and the Row of A is 4,3,2; what's the point? I learned all these weird number systems and aside from Gaussian elimination (a task that I normally reserve for electronic computation for the sake of brevity) I have no clue what I would ever do with any of them.
Why the heck do engr majors take this? Weird/nice guy but is bad at teaching and has the worst time when it comes to lecturing. The one thing that pissed me off if our crappy math department tutoring service, they HAVE NO CLUE what our homework is. screw uncc's math department, everyone can agree on this
Easy professor that just wants people to try. At UNCC, this is about 5% of the entire class. I was hoping to actually learn linear algebra, because of its usefulness, but alas no. Instead of listening to him I watched Strang's lectures at MIT and just went to his office hours. Super easy A, like all classes in Math here.
Avoid.
His in-class presentation of material was substandard to complete his unclear HW questions. The book was next to useless for help in HW. HW is a significant portion of the grade. To his credit, he was always available for homework help. Don't underestimate this subject, the class dropped to a third after the first test.
Very good professor, teaching the basics and history of math.
Linear Algebra is hard! That why easiness is 3! All in all, he is good teacher if you frequently go to his class!
Fantastic professor, a little nutty, and tough homework, but genuinely seems to care that you understand the underlying concepts. His grading scheme is pretty generous if you stay on top of your homework. Doing his daily problems are very helpful to your grade. Great class, but be ready to work for the grade.
Never knew the true meaning of confusion until I took this class. He expects you to be able to solve abstract theoretical problems just from one or two incredibly vague and poorly written examples. Nice guy, though.
This math is very abstract so it made it even harder when he can't explain stuff clearly. If you're registered for this class already, I'd say get out of this professor asap. If you're stuck with him, I HIGHLY SUGGEST tutoring, office hours, and khan academy on youtube. else you suffer.
If you expect to get an easy A, this class is not for you. Dr. Sonin is very smart and knows what he is doing. The problem is he focuses a lot on abstract ideas instead of practical application. I am poor with math and made an A and I will tell you--GET A TUTOR. With tutoring and high HW grades (HW is half a test grade) you can achieve an A too.
if you can avoid taking him please do. I barely passed mainly because of his curve. You will have to work really hard for the grade you want. try to find and use all old test and homeworks. Its hard to understand him talking because he has a strong accent. If you get him good luck.
Dr. Sonin is a nice person, he will help if you're confused, but his presentation of the material and explanations are lacking. Often will cover an entire chapter in a day, then pick random pieces to present the subsequent two weeks. Class is very abstract, so the ambiguity really hurts but if you show him sincere effort he will give you an A.
Run. Run far away! Unless you are a math whiz who can do this stuff by self learning. Run. Run far away. I have not the math gene, but I've made it this far at least and you really won't learn much of anything from the lectures most likely however some people below said they aced the class just by hacking the syllabus. Homeworks are big
Dr. Sonin writes his notes before class and just projects them on the board. His organization is terrible and he's always drawing on his notes. When you review his notes online after he's posted them, you'll be lost. This class is honestly a joke. I attend only when homework is due or when there's a test. Easy grade, sure, but not inspiring.
Dr. Sonin teaches only in theory. He shows no examples of how to do problems, and his in-class notes are impossible to follow. His grading saves you. Two "homeworks" per test. Each counts as 25% of the test. Very willing to help you on homework. Tons of partial credit. Slight accent, but very understandable. Show him you're trying A!
Dr. Sonin's notes are horrible made and not easy to understand. He teaches fairly decent and the homework assignments arien't too hard and they are valued as 50% of your test. Also 85 is an A, so it is not impossible to leave the class with a decent/good grade.
Sonin is very willing to help if you take the time to ask. If it weren't for his help, I would not have passed. The lectures can sometimes be confusing or unclear, but one-on-one, he helps you understand the material. His grading method makes it difficult to fail, and he offers a lot of extra credit. Use the book and do the daily home problems!
Dr. Sonin is very helpful but the material and his style of lecturing ultimately led to this review. He gives 2 homework packets before each of his 3 tests and they count as 50 points toward the test. You might be able to find some of the old homework or tests online and they are extremely similar to the ones due.
He doesn't really teach, he just kinda writes things on the board and expects you to understand everything. Get ready to go to tutoring because that's the only way you'll understand anything in the class. He didn't take attendance at first but decided to start about half way through the semester.
Sonin is one of the nicest, smartest men you'll ever meet. It's sometimes difficult to follow during lectures, but he is so helpful one-on-one. Lots of people have a hard time in his classes, but he makes it really easy to get an A from his grading method, and he also wants to help you learn so if you are confused just go to his office hours.
Dr. Sonin is a very intelligent professor, his biggest flaw would be that he forgets the students are new to Linear Algebra. He has plenty of years of teaching this material so for him it's a cake walk (again, he forgets that). COMPLETE HIS GRADED HWs the points count towards the tests. 3 midterms and 1 final (he allows formula sheets).
I'm an all A student. I've never had so much difficulty in a class that I've had to drop it before. The guy has a strong Russian accent and extremely sloppy handwriting; writes all over his notes making it impossible to focus; has no sense of grammar or spelling; expects everyone to understand but gets annoyed when of course they don't. Stay away!
Stay away. I have never gotten less than an A in a class before and I had a B in his class when I withdrew. He was so awful and rude that I felt I had no choice to withdraw. He yelled at me in front of the class to say I was making a stupid mistake. I get sick at the thought of ever seeing him again.
Just don't take his class. He does not use Canvas or any such web service. You basically don't know your grade until the end of the semester. His lectures are him going over question answers. The answers are already written so you don't even get to see the thought process. Heavy accent and talks quietly so you can't even hear him. Horrible prof.
Grading: 85-100 is A, 74-84 is B, etc.. Does not use Canvas, but uses his own website. He Has things already written down before the class and does minimal writing for explaining problems. Tests are similar to homework given. Homework is CRUCIAL for your grade, HW is actually 50% of the grade of each test. There are 2 HW before each of the 3 tests
I literally didnt understand a thing. I had to do all the work outside of class and I was told I didnt make enough effort. He was bias when it came to grades because I compared my test grades with my friends and they got points for the same exact answer while I got points taken off.
Cons: I can't understand the lecture, the professor is quiet. His notes are kinda messy. I had to go to tutoring. I have never gotten less than an A in any math class before, I had a C in this class. HW is difficult. Need to read textbook. Pros: Professor is nice to those who work hard. He is very smart. Go to office hrs for help.
He is a awful professors. Inclass stuff he goes over prewritten hand written notes that you can understand. And Good luck if you messed up on 2 hw assignment, you will be screwd.
Worst professor I've ever had. Doesn't actually explain or teach anything. He prewrites handwritten notes and just skims over them quickly. Condescending if you don't understand things.
His notes are illegible, ended up using Khan Academy for the entire class!
Never in my life, a math course troubles me. Who legit give this man a college license, my high school teacher is way better than this. Just don't take him, even if you have no choices, just take another one next semester, please don't.
He rarely says something that can actually be understood and learned. Tests are very few, and very forgiving. They are tied with your homework. It's a shame you will get a F because of: Lack of time, confusing questions, and things you didn't practice yet. If you get 100s on the homework, you can get a 50% lowest on the test. YOU WILL NEED IT.
Terrible lecturer as he has the work already written down and does not explain anything about how he got the numbers. Textbook is REQUIRED to be read before class if you wanna know anything about what he is talking about. Does not help during class and instead tells students to email him after. Barely responds to those emails and no help given.
You will learn nothing, nothing. I got one question right on the 4th test and got an A. Why, because 2 classes went to the associate chair and complained. He basically pulled an "OH SNAP!" and raise the class average by... 40 POINTS!!!! Every test and question is poorly made, and notes?!?! LECTURES ARE POINTLESS, I GOT AN A BECAUSE I DIDN'T SUBMIT!
If you hate yourself. Take this class. You will hate this teacher instead. Side effects may include still hating yourself for taking this class.
By far the worst professor I have ever had, didnt follow through on his own grading scheme and proceeded to act as if we were in the wrong and didnt read the syllabus correctly. Only graded on a few homeworks and a couple of tests, so if you dont do well on one youre kind of screwed
Treats students with no respect and will shame you infront of the entire class. Don't bother coming to class because he does not teach. Lectures are him going over practice problems that you're supposed to do prior. Tests and homework problems are awful. Best bet is to find other ppl taking the course and teach yourself the material.
Do not register for STAT 2122 with Sonin. If you registered late and his section is the only one remaining, take the course next semester. Sonin is technologically illiterate, a terrible instructor, and also just mean to students who struggle. Neither the Mathematics department nor CLAS cares about his behavior, I assume because he's tenured.
Impossible to understand his English and expects you to teach yourself everything while he goes over random examples that he might not even complete (if you can even understand him). he moves quickly and the notes he gives you are written in a way that only he can understand. I dropped this class b/c this man was going to destroy my 4.0gpa. Run!!!
I've never taken a math class that was this awful. He doesn't speak English very well and doesn't teach anything during lectures. He only goes over problems that are pre-solved and you were supposed to have taught yourself before class. Team up with other students because you won't learn anything from him. Dr Google and YouTube
I cannot stress this enough: DONT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR! You will learn absolutely nothing and will end up having to learn everything for yourself. He has weekly quizzes and teaches from pre-written notes that he doesn't explain. I have never left a review before, but I am solely to keep other people from making the same mistake I did
Sonin has a thick Russian accent, and doesn't often understand what students are asking, and doesn't try to understand much. Sonin often goes off on rants about more complex math and concepts that are not in the curriculum.
I have never rated a professor before, but am writing this one to tell you to stay away! Your only hope is to make a good study group. He is impossible to understand during lecture. He doesn't explain his grading methods or policy. Only take as a last resort.
The class is manageable if you are good at learning from textbooks. Sonin is pretty difficult to understand during lectures and also has a hard time understanding the questions that students ask. However there is extra credit on nearly every assignment and partial credit when grading.
Do not take this professor no matter what you do. You have to be an exceptional student to pass this course which of course most people are not. Unless you are ready to teach yourself the entire course material do not take this professor. He is very unclear in his teaching and his questions are vague and hard to understand.
Professor Sonin is probably one of the worse math professors I have had. He teaches via projector and his notes and some of the homeworks are illegible. He assigns home problems and spends over half of the 50 minute class to go over them leaving barely any time to go over the actual notes. Only way I passed was from his 5 point offset grading scale
You'll have to teach yourself most everything and the homework can be rough. Definitely recommend going to tutoring for the homework. The way he grades is pretty easy. If you get 100 on both the homeworks before the test then you have a 50 and only need a 25/50 on the test to get a 75 which is a B since he has a 15 point grading scale. Nice guy tho
I recommend Dr. Sonin's course because he is very kind and helpful. If you do the work on time, correctly, and ask questions or help, you will definitely pass the course. Make sure to stay after class for help. Tests are open note. Do very well on homework and you will be good.
Prof Sonin is a very intelligent professor but his lectures have no form of structure and are largely incomprehensible. There are 3 tests in which the 2 associated HW assignments contribute to your overall test grade. Not a tough grader. Be prepared to use external resources other than the lectures and the ineffective textbook given for the course.
Dr. Sonin's class is hard, but he also assigns a lot of extra credit, so as long as you read the textbook, and get any help if you need, it should not be a problem to pass this class with an A.
Prof. Sonin's class was difficult but if you put in some effort you will be fine. Lecture are not always clear but he is helpful in trying to explain topics to you again. Every hw and tests include extra credit. If he knows you put in effort and you are close to higher letter grade he may bump you up. Above average effort but its doable.
Hands down the worst math professor I've ever had. Gave lectures that were super unorganized and made no sense most of the time. He knows the material well but doesn't appear to know how to teach it. He was willing to attempt to explain concepts that weren't understood, but those explanations weren't the best.
you can not understand him when he talks or writes. His lectures are just pre-written notes that you will not understand. His grading system is very confusing. He also has bad hearing so do not expect him to hear you.
Having an A be a 85-100 and having extra credit on the homeworks might sound like a plus, but there is a clear reason why they are there. The content is easy, watching other teachers lectures and tests, the content is a lot easier then Professor Sonin makes it. He also made a typo mid test with no compensation. Dont take him, wait for an open seat.
Lectures are handwritten and hard to understand. A LOT of people withdrew before the second exam. However, is a genuine guy and talks about other math topics a lot in class that are very cool if you like math. The textbook is easy to follow and very helpful, did 90% of my learning from it. Allows notes for exams and will help you during them.
Got an A, but at the cost of my sanity. If you mess up on the homework you pretty much mess up on the test as your HW contributes to your test grade. If you get 2 A's and a minimum of a C on whatever test you can take the short exam which is only 3 questions, and that short exam would replace the lowest exam grade. Short exam was not bad btw.
Not an easy course, but he tells you what to do to be successful: Read the textbook, do the daily homework problems, understand the homework set, and do well on the tests. A good grade on the three tests means you practically won't have a final. Not a great professor, and you won't learn the content well, but he does care and is very available.
Do NOT let your pride get in place of your thinking, 32 1 star reviews, stories about how he messes up and doesn't give credit, heavy accent, horrible notes, lectures, and explanations. Look up General Shepherd from MW2 describing Makarov, it should give you a solid idea of what this professor is like. Genuinely the worst professor ever so far.
This class was a confusing mess. His lectures are very confusing and not well-made. The material he gives out is different compared to the other classes so the pal sessions are no help at all. But there is always extra credit on the homework and tests, Also he allows you to bring a formula sheet and notes during the tests. Still wouldn't recommend.
Dr. Sonin was a terrible professor. He did not come prepared for class. He printed out old scribbled notes and projected them, which were incomprehensible. He spoke with such a thick accent that made it impossible to learn. You can easily pass if you just go through the textbook to learn, it is a very helpful book. There is lots of extra credit
Dr. Sonin was not a good Professor. The lectures he gave were hard to follow because of how he presented the material as well as his accent. If you want to pass you need to read the textbook. There's extra credit on the tests and homework. He allows you to bring formula sheets for the tests.
This professor is ROUGH to say the least. There are 6 homeworks, 3 tests, and a final (which has a short or long version). Be prepared to basically learn fully on your own and do everything you can to do well on the homeworks. You will not know what is going on 95% of the time and the professor doesn't go over examples in class. Avoid if you can!!!
Difficult to understand. His accent and handwriting are too difficult to follow. His lectures are printed out handwritten notes. I had to drop this class because he was too difficult to follow. He gave a lot of hw and a test each month. I then retook the class with a different professor and figured out this course was easy af.
Was very hard to follow during lectures as his notes were structured differently and was very confusing. You are better off teaching yourself the textbook as to not get confused by his teaching.
Difficult to understand in class. I've had very good teachers with thick accents but Sonin specifically mumbles and is hard to hear. Outside of class he provides no resources and says to solve problems on textbook which doesn't tell you the answers. Most of your grade is rare homework problems which you can only solve by looking up how to do them.
Terrible lectures, weird grading, and a heavy accent with terrible take-home notes. Would not recommend to take unless you can learn the pretty difficult material from just the textbook
