all I can say, is what a disaster. A complete and utter disaster...
at least she cares about the students
This prof...sucks. all i can say. horrible. treats you all like kindergarden kids. annoying, doesnt know how to teach at all! shouldnt be teaching..ever . relying on the book is the only option. =(
Completely useless. goes too fast over simple concepts, then goes over easy ons in minute detail. Terrible lectre style, and doesn't post lecture notes until the hour before the lecture. Impossible to tke notes and keep up with the material at the sae tme.
Terrible teacher, boring voice, this class had 3 profs, and if it wasn't a program requirement, I would have dropped it because of her. She shouldn't be teaching.
Worst prof i have ever encountered. Hansen should teach this whole course! her strange pronunciation of words in class confuses me. very hard to concentrate in class and contradicts herself on important concepts. =(
She is a very nice woman and does treat students with much respect. But I agree, she cannot teach. This is not junior high, this is university. She talks so slowly and overpronounces her words. I just could not learn in her class, so I eventually stopped going. Hard to pinpoint exactly why she was a bad prof, but she was. Couldn't explain anything.
Seriously, don't bother going to class when she's teaching. Everyone is either skipping, zoned out, or sleeping. The rest of the course was done really well with Hansen, but with her, all the terms are pronounced differently, and she just can't get the class to focus. She is a nice person though, I'll give her that.
Guys... go to her review tutorials. That clears a majority of the dust from her crappy lectures. She's actually nice with a smaller group of people. Asks many interesting questions that tie all the information together. If anything, she should be a head TA or lab coordinator of the course, not a prof.
Horrible prof, if you're in her class, drop it asap. Save yourself $500
She is one of the nicest people around. If you ever needed help her doors wide open and she would go out of her way to try and help. And she stress things that could be on exams, I have no complaints about her at all.
Very nice, but she lacks the skill to adequately organize/teach her key concepts in lecture. She is much better at helping to clarify ideas in person (office hours) and AFTER you have taught most of the material to yourself using the textbook.
If you need take this class, forget attendence and learn the material by reading the textbook, as she won't make any sense if you haven't done so already. People that actually pay attention in this class? I'd say 1/50. ...And that's not accounting for those that don't go. Knows her stuff, but can't convey it, a very kind person, if nothing else.
I liked her. I liked her power point slides and I liked how she would go out of her way to help her students. She is a very nice woman. However I found her very misleading with the info she expected us to know for the final - she covered so much material and said what to know for each chap, but then didn't follow ANY of it on the exam - very hard ?
she's super nice and spends hours and hours outside of lecture time helping students but her tests were WAY TOO HARD. You were expected to draw diagrams exactly off the text book for the final and she covers SO MUCH MATERIAL thats all theoretical. people who got 80s on midterm got 50s on final. they ended up giving everyone extra 10% at the end
She's nice and her notes were on blackboard, but her portion of the final was harsh! Covered so much material during lectures, her 'chapter expectations' included EVERYTHING... wasn't clear on what she really wanted us to take away from the lectures... and the chapter expecations she gave us before the final in no way predicted the written question
A lovely person, really. Final exam was BRUTAL. Seeing as this is a course requirement for most bio students, advice: 1. Review your notes and talk to her immediately if you're unclear. She's great during office hours. 2. MEMORIZE EVERY DIAGRAM PRESENTED IN HER SLIDES!! 3. She has a lot of expertise with biotech. EMPHASIZES THAT INFO! Good luck! :)
Dr Barrette is a very nice women and is always willing to help, however I am not fond of her teaching style. She rushes through many important concepts that show up on exams. My only advice to people taking classes from her is to make sure you read the textbook and do all the practice problems.
She was very excited about teaching, but liked to teach as if the class was in grade 3. She made example tests for practice, but this did not reflect anything to do with the final. She made her portion of the exam VERY long, and expected a ton of detail. Know her slides, and all portions of text in order to get by.
She can sometimes be a bit unclear in class, but she's extremely nice and helpful if you go to her for help during her office hours. At least for this class, she told us exactly what we needed to know for the final.
I had lost my faith after bio311, but she's actually a great BCEM prof. Works hard to make lessons clear and gives lots of hints prior to exams. Also great in office hours.
Extremely helpful and willing, made herself very available after class, quick & clear answers to emails as promised. Found her style of explanation very colloquial and practical, lots of application to real life.
I found this prof irritating for several reasons mainly her squeaky voice and her underemphasis of topics she later tests on. I found her questions on the exams were always the more difficult ones, and she always brought stuff in from the previous section into the new midterm. The final was actually easy if you memorized EVERYTHING in metabolism.
She was awesome! She will help you so much if you ask her!
She is a wonderful professor. She makes herself very accessible and makes clear and concise notes. You must study though to do well. She always plans HELPFUL review sessions and always responds to emails. Its not a walk in the park, but she makes it as easy as can be without giving you the answers.
Very helpful professor if you go to her office hours. She is very enthusiastic and wants all her students to succeed. Exams can be tough at times.

Holy cheerfulness batman! She could use a chill pill, but is a good prof once you get past the squeak & lilt in her voice. Super fantastic for making herself available & answering questions 6 ways to Sunday until you understand. She is a very nice lady & genuinely cares about her students & their success (but she won't dumb down the exams!)
Amazing prof! She is extremely cheerful and approachable. Her classes are pretty interesting compared to other science classes. GO TO HER REVIEW SESSION. She sometimes tells u whats on the test. But the standard for 311 is high. To get an A, over 90 is required, but if u understand her notes(text book is useless) well, A is not impossible.
hard to score well on her part buttt she's great Prof, extremely friendly and ever-ready to help, so make sure to use her office hrs...and practice well ahead of exam...and memorize everything in her notes! her enthusiasm will make u like her part, which is why i sort of liked the course.
She's one of my favourite professors. Extremely nice and helpful when you ask her questions. My only complaint is that she can be a little bit too happy.
She is the most helpful teacher I had ever have. She explains everything in such a claer way.Awesome!!!
not the best teacher. its clear that she knows the material very well but lacks the ability to transfer that understanding to the students. grading scale too high
SUPER happy and ALWAYS ready to help. You can email her for help and in like 5 minutes you get a (always polite) helpful response. Her policy is pretty much "if you need help just find me". Class was super easy and testing was fair.
An amazing professor! By far my favorite to come across. Her attitude is enlightening and she is always willing to help. Very approachable and always has a smile!
She is the kindergarten teacher of biology. She is so excited about everything science and will keep you paying attention. Her tests are so fair will help you with any questions.
Teaches biochem like you're in kindergarten, but she treats you like an adult. Very professional, helpful and passionate about biology. She answers all questions, big or small. She also drops in during lab periods to lend a hand when she can. Her exams questions are fair and so is her marking scheme.
Dr Barrette-Ng is so awesome. She totally deserves all the teaching awards that she wins. She is so helpful and always enthusiastic about whatever she's teaching. She tells funny stories about her cats. I hate BChem but she makes it tolerable.
Amazing Teacher. Keep up with the readings, review after class and do her practice midterm/final to get a good mark. She's great and makes the lectures enjoyably. I learned so much from her this semester.
Helpful in office hours, and she seemed more helpful in person than email. Her portion of the exam seemed much "fairer" than Dr. Edward's. The only thing with her written portion is that you seem to have to be word for word exact to the answer key or else the marking TA will not give you fullmarks. This is b/c her written involves more explanation.
She is the best. You can trust her when she tells you: don't be afraid to ask. Follow what she says. If you are taking this clas do everything your profs post on blackboard and you will be fine.Read your notes.Reading the book helps reinforce concepts but is not completely followed in the lectures.
The best prof I've ever had! Truly deserves all the awards she gets. The course was super organized and the exams were fair. Just pay attention in class and keep up with the readings and notes! The course is tough but her part was much better than the other professor's. Plan to take any class she offers in the future.
what an awesome prof! She kind of talks to you like you're in kindergarten, but she is genuinely that enthusiastic about bchem. Her notes are great and she is very clear about her expectations; she even gives you a review package with everything that you'll need to know for the exam. And who else has open office hours all day??
I have never met anyone SO excited to teach students. Her enthusiasm keeps you awake in class. She's very approachable. The one think I recommend is to leave enough time for review after each lecture- Labs are time consuming but you need to make sure you stay on top of the lecture material too!
She is so happy and intense about eveything. The labs are INSANE and long and she makes them. But what can you do. She is SO SO helpful if you take the time to get help. I have never had a teacher who is insane about helping students.
I had a C- after the midterm which was on hansens section. But after the final, which was mostly BarretteNgs material, I got an A-. BarretteNg is very enthusiastic, and wants to see her students excel. She was always willing to help students,so far she is the the best prof I ever had! Also the exam packages are VERY VERY helpful.
She is irritating beyond words. She teaches and gives basic examples, gives basic practice exams, and writes exams that are above the level she teaches. She also sends consistent annoying e-mails saying "The notes are posted to blackboard! I am so excited to see you tomorrow!". She has made me despise biochemistry.
Dr Barette-Ng is very good at simplifying things and explaining the material but she is by far the most cheerful person I have ever heard talk... You'd swear she wasn't human by how peppy she is. Labs are easy and somewhat interesting. Tests are challenging but fair.
Very clear lectures. She is very helpful and friendly. The tests were somewhat challenging but all based on lecture material. The labs were somewhat boring and marking was strict.
She has the sun shining out of her butt the entire semester. =P Wonderful lady though! Full on enthusiasm, and her way of explaining glycolysis and krebs and the whole thing was SO good, I still remember it (and it's been a year!). She's very nice, really hard marker (yet fair) and very bad at replying to e-mails.
Professor Barrette-Ng puts more effort into her courses than any prof I've had- thorough lecture notes and great labs that parallel course material. Very approachable, very friendly, and VERY knowledgeable-she knows her stuff inside out. More importantly, she has the ability to teach.
Very enthusiastic and kind - you may not like the lilt in her voice, but you'll probably get used to it. Ask her for help if you need it, concepts become so much clearer! Be sure to keep up with material and ask for help throughout the semester though, because near exam time, she always has tons of people lining outside her office to talk to her.
This is my second semester with Barrette-Ng and honestly she is driving me nuts. She is a decent teacher, however she spends too much time reviewing each lecture, and not enough on new material. This causes her to brush over significant points. Also, in-class assignments are annoying, especially if you can't make it to class.
Barette-Ng ruined this course with the organization. She is a good teacher but the way the course (LABS!!) were organized was terrible. Did not learn a thing in lab and it probably made up most of my time spent in this course. I would not recommend this professor if she is the course coordinator. PS. Very strict marking on exams
Really enthusiastic professor. Make sure you KEEP UP WITH EVERYTHING because I guarantee you the week of the exam, she will introduce a lot of information + speed through it. That said, she is nice and provides a lot of good review/exam materials (look over past exams!) Not a fan of the labs but I thought lecture material was genuinely interesting.
She was the best professor of my semester, genuinely wants students to succeed. Kind of annoying to listen to at times though, you can tell she loves her cat. But plenty of USEFUL review and study material. A shocking amount of memorization to do after the second midterm. If you review after every class it always makes it easier.
Explains everything very clearly however too much information is expected to be memorized. Otherwise a great prof
This prof is very enthusiastic and wants her students to do well, however do not believe her when she says that she does not want you to have to memorize...there was more memory work in this class than in any class I have taken. She is super irritating and acts like she is teaching preschool, but don't let that you, she has VERY high expectations.
She is very enthusiastic and has great lecture notes. I didn't need to use the textbook. If you just read over your notes and do the prep material she posts on blackboard, you can do well on exams. I got away with not doing practice problems in the textbook. The only thing I hated about the class was the amount of material we had to memorize!
very inthusiastic prof
Great prof. She is extremely enthusiastic and acts as if her sole purpose on this earth is for her students to understand the material. In order to do well, you must STUDY. She gives you the right tools to do well and tells you EXACTLY what to know. There were never any surprises on the exams. I love this lady.
Dr. Barrette-Ng is a very nice lady, but I think I let her fool me into thinking her portion of Genetics would be easy. This class takes work. Make sure you understand what it is she wants you to know, as she has a habit of testing the minutest of details. Helpful if you ask for clarification; this lady knows her stuff.
Good lecturer. Some people find her overly enthusiastic, but I do like her. I found the material to be quite interesting. KEEP UP with all the readings and work. She has a really bad habit of cramming in a lot of information the week of/day before the exam. Know everything on her lecture slides (small mistakes on exams can add up).
She can be annoying with her childish tone but she is a really good prof when it comes to teaching. She focusses on how well you know the topic not how much you have memorized, its a relatively hard class but A is not hard at all.... ..... .
Really lovely lady. I like the fact course was more about understanding concepts then applying them. It's been over half a year since taking this course, and I still remember all my amino acids. Course is not hard - just take the time to understand the material and keep up with it. Main con: she has tendency to cram last minute.
She is extremely smart, very passionate, and very helpful. Her final was extremely, unfairly difficult. I receied 97% on Dr. Hansen's midterm and only a 72 on her final. Don't let her childish ways of teaching fool you into thinking it is an easy course.
She's a really friendly and bubbly prof, but her superfluous slides and filler examples will make you think this class is easy. IT IS NOT. Do many of the textbook questions and you won't have too bad of a time. She is also amazing at clarifying a question for you so don't hesitate to ask!
very enthusiastic and willing to help but the 2013 mt was absolutely brutal
This is the second course I've had with Barrete-Ng. She's a genuinely good person and she's very helpful, most of the time. Her exams are insanely difficult and technical. Memorization is key. I've had problems with her as la coordinator but she seems to have rectified those issues. Very good and nice but the material she teaches is difficult.
Her tests are very long and hard she gives lots of practice but then the test questions are harder and too long for the time she gives.
She is a very sweet person, really loves biochemistry, and will go way out of her way to help you understand a concept. Her exams are doable, but very tough, and you have to have studied thoroughly. learn to love the practice questions - they'll really save you.
Dr.Barette-Ng is a decent prof. At times she has issues with time management while teaching. She is very enthusiastic but her test are lengthy. Her expectation of your ability to think clearly and quickly may be a tad high. Finally, she loves cats just a little too much and wastes time working them (poorly) into the lecture material. 3/5
I complained when I had her for BIOL 311 ... but I feel like BCEM 393 is really "her" course. She taught it flawlessly, with so much support materials and opportunities for assistance. If you are majoring in biochemistry, you will learn to appreciate all of this so much more in 3rd and 4th year when it's all stripped away from you. LOVE HER
not a good prof, but you have no choice but to take this course with her
She's a really good professor, she makes review notes for every exam, and does her best to make the material easy to understand. People are too hard on her, sure she is a little weird sometimes! But she's extremely nice, and a great professor.
She really is a good professor. I've learned more with her than any other professor I've had. Her tests are unreasonably long and there's quite a bit of mindless memorization, but she is great. She's very clear and good at explaining things and is always happy to have you come by her office for help. She goes above and beyond for her students.
Her course is difficult, and there will be memorization (but basically just for the final). Otherwise, it's hard to complain about her as a prof. She works VERY hard to make sure her students have the best chance to pass the class; the effort she goes to in making study guides etc is fantastic. The course is hard, but she helps.
I wasn't expecting much from this course but ended up loving it thanks to Barrette-Ng! She provides so many resources to help students succeed. Her tests are very long but none of the questions are unreasonable. There is a fair bit of memorization but that would be the case for this course no matter who the prof is.
I found her to be extremely friendly and kind, with easy notes and lots of extra material, which initially lulled me into a false sense of easy exam material. Memorization is key but the ability to apply concepts will be the difference between an A and failing this course.
Her tests are difficult. You need to actually understand the material and be able to apply it in order to do well in this class. She provides tons of resources for students to help you do well, but it is your responsibility to utilize them. She is always willing to meet with you to go over things you might not understand, and is very helpful.
If you go into B-Chem expecting it to be easy, you're not paying attention, but IBN will help you any way she can. She sincerely wants you to do well, and will go way out of her way to make that happen if you want. Her exams are hard; she writes a 2 hr exam and gives you 2 hrs to take it, so you have to have your stuff DOWN going in.
I was really hateful towards her for 311 (genetics, in which you MUST take it with her, and BCHEM), but for this course I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, she taught it really well. I did this in the spring in which resources and practice exams were free, and were really helpful. Summary: teaches this course really well.
I love this prof, she sincerely wants EVERYONE to do well in her class but her exams are intense. I went into the first midterm and ran out of time with 3 long answers blank... Bring a watch!!! Planning is key. Use the podcasts and go visit her if you need help, she cleared up any questions I had. Use her resources provided + textbook questions.
She changed the labs so their are now 13 instead of 7, flippin ridiculous when you have a lab session where you have to do 3 different labs the same week you have a bio 311 miterm. And everything, absolutely everything in lab requires out-of-class group work. Lecture exam was wayyy hard to.
She's the lab coordinator for this course, and I found the labs to be long and pointless. There was so much extraneous information that preparing for the labs were tedious. Did not reply to my emails. Overall bubbly personality, but don't let that fool you into thinking that this will be an easy course.
One of the best profs but brutal exams!
Fair and material is interesting. Tests have a lot of writing though. Go to her review sessions and do all the practice questions.
Great prof. Her material is hard and there's no way around it, but she tries to help you as much as she can. Always open for questions and releases a lot of relevant study materials. The final exam was tough, but fair. She practically tells you what's on it beforehand so there's no excuses for not studying.
One of the most helpful profs I've come across at this university. She really wants you to succeed and is very passionate about what she teaches. The course material that she teaches (not Hansen's material) is quite difficult and the tests are written but she's so amazing. If you put in half the effort she does you'll do well.
Just keep up with the course/lecture/textbook material and you are set for the final. Most questions were applications but their were a few memorization/definition questions (easy marks) so you'll do fine. good luck! She's really helpful during her office hours.
This course isn't easy, but she will make it fun! The labs are long, but I found them to be tons of fun. There are no surprises on the exams, and she tells yo what is on them during her tutorial sessions. Study well, do ALL the textbook questions, and you will be fine.

She seems super nice then slaps you in the face with extremely difficult exams not to mention tons of assignments. Ineffective as a professor and not helpful at all in person
NEVER take a monday lab in her courses. She often posts lab materials sunday night, leaving you scrambling to pull yourself together. She's a peppy teacher and tries really hard to engage people, but I think she has too much on her plate. Genetics with her was the same story; disorganized extracurriculars up the wazoo.
You have nothing to fear from this woman. This class is not the big scary one everyone says it is, but that doesn't mean it's easy! She is really helpful and her review sessions are GREAT prep for the exams. The lab assignments are not long, although there is one report and a research project, but the project is really fun.
BCEM 393 is NOT as bad as it is made out to be, though she does not give easy exams. She is a very approachable prof and does her best to help us in every way she can.I found her to be very repetitive with previous material. Labs suck - long and boring, but not difficult. Class average is around 74 percent, so it is not a GPA killer by any means.
I found her part of genetics to be easier than Dr. Hansen's actually. There are labs every week, and a lot of them are really boring and pointless-there is a lot of waiting involved. Her exams are challenging, and she expects you to know how to apply what you have learned, which is where I think a lot of people go wrong.Overall she's a good prof
It is by no means difficult (take CMMB411 for some perspective). However, Bertie doesn't make it enjoyable. You will be perpetually catching up on material, the assignments are poorly thought out (you need to complete Q1 before Q2, so working as a group is pointless), and she spends more time asking the class to be quiet, than she does teaching.
Possibly one of the greatest Professors I have ever had. Enthusiastic about teaching and the material we learned, but most of all she put so much effort into providing out of class review, making a unique practice final for us, and dealing with all our questions. Class may have been behind at the end, but I had an amazing time in class anyways.
Useless at teaching, expected us to know stuff for the final we didn't cover in class, because her in class assignments took too long. Needs to get some organization skills.
Totally disorganized. We were 3.5 weeks behind, with 2 weeks left of classes. So she posted a bunch of podcasts and decided not to do a whole unit (lipids). Marking takes forever for all the assignments. Once you are done with lectures/podcasts you will realize there is not that much to the course, but she makes it harder than it ought to be.
Doesn't utilize her time well... spends too much time focusing on examples rather than teaching the fundamentals. In class group assignments are long and ambiguous, not to mention complete wastes of time. Exams are fair though, but don't expect much help from B-Ng. Exams returned very quickly, but other components of course mark marked very slowly.
Amazing prof! So helpful with everything -- provided extra practice problems, review notes, review podcats and practice final. She helped me so much during office hours, which she had all of the time. Class was super interesting with lots of examples. Would definitely recommend.
At the end we had to teach ourselves from "review podcasts" ~30 min long and were either stuff not covered in class or in so much more detail (which is not "review" at all). She seems helpful and says not to hesitate to contact her, but her email reply time was by far the worst i have ever seen:2-3 weeks(for manyof us she never even replied at all)
Super helpful -- loved her! Don't listen to some of these other posts. She was the most helpful prof I have had in 3 years here. She was always asking us what we wanted to help us study. That included podcasts, which I LOVED. She did so much to help, even set up piazza. I hope I can take another course from her.
She is a very nice person, but a bad instructor. She is terribly disorganized. She likes to review at the beginning of each class, but this can take almost a quarter of the class, so we were behind almost 2 weeks worth of material. She then expected us to learn this from podcasts that she made. Marking was slow too, still don't know our lab marks.
Dr. Barrett-Ng wastes class time by reviewing last class's material and giving us ridiculous assignments to do, then when she doesn't cover everything, wants us to teach it to ourselves with podcasts. NOT COOL. She doesn't respond to emails in a good amount of time, she takes weeks to do this. Assignments also marked very slowly. ARGHHHHHHH!
She very nice;however, she is not an effective teacher! She wasted too much time recapping, and with in-class assignments & we rushed through the last unit of the course - last minute podcasts right before the final were NOT okay. Lab grades took forever (post final) I would not recommend her, though she’s unavoidable for bcem 393 and biol 311
She's a genuine and nice professor (really cares about students). Her podcasts help in learning the material but I felt like this was an online class since we had many podcasts and in class lectures were recaps (we were really behind in content this year) The midterm and final is fair if you STUDY and UNDERSTAND the material, Memorization is key.
Not bad, but the course was disorganized and I got a bit irritated with last minute podcasts as she fell behind near the end. Most of the questions she asks are assessing how your understanding but memorization is the basis of it. Spent too much time reviewing. She is very nice but not the most effective prof but I appreciate that she cares.
Honestly, this is one of the easiest courses in biology. The material is accessible and little memorization is needed. Dr. Barrett-Ng puts a lot of work into the course; however she isn't the most efficient instructor, and spends a lot of time reviewing, which left us to cover material she didn't get to. If you go ask for help, she is great though.
2014 they revamped the course. The new course is very organized and very thorough. Lots of info but she tries very hard to slow down and answer any questions people have. I have never had a prof care as much about her students as she does! If you attend class and print off her slides then you will never use the text book. Amazing prof!
She cares so much for her students! She has open office hours and she is always available for her students. As long as you attend lectures, ask questions when you don't understand, you'll do well. Her explanations are very clear. She does go quickly because there is a lot of material, but you will get use to it by second week.
She's a wonderful teacher. Part of her research is to actually research on how to teach biochemistry better at universities, so you really cannot go wrong with her. She is one of the most helpful professors, she cares about you, and always will do everything to make you understand the material. She gives a lot of resources to study from.
Dr. Barrette-Ng wants to see her students succeed. She provided us with everything we needed to do well in this course, including study guides and tons of practice questions. She is my favourite prof so far in uni, would recommend her to anyone. Study hard and go to her office hours, you will do great!
Great instructor, clearly dedicated to the success of her students. The test and lab assignments could be difficult, but she provided enough practice questions and review material to facilitate success.
The worst part of this course is the lab component. There are way too many long and useless assignments. Barrette-Ng is a ball of joy and always welcomes questions. Her lecture notes are a bit sparse, but come exam time she posts review notes which are pretty detailed. Both the midterm and final are all written, so memorization won't cut it.
She goes pretty fast. I didn't understand much when I was in class. The review sessions were helpful though. The final was hard, and so was the lab.
The course is extremely challanging but many helpful learning resources are given. Lectures are confusing and unclear at times, so time spent doing the practise problems will benefit you the most. The textbook is very confusing and unhelpful. Memorization will get you nowhere all the exams are written problem solving and are very difficult.
She is an important asset for the university. You know, she is a superb researcher along her husband; however, her classes require unconditional diligence because she assumes many thing from her students. You should prepare yourself to practice self-learning. Also, plan on getting marks as much as possible in Labs.
Delivers information and is a nice person but she speaks to you as if you are little more than 5 years old. Her lectures are a pain to sit through and you're likely better off studying by yourself from the textbook, often paired with Hansen who is a very good prof, however.
This part of the course was better than the first - I found her to be much more engaging than Dr. Hansen, and she was far more approachable. She stays at the University well into the evenings and her door is always open. Dr. Barrette-Ng is a treat.
She is absolutely the worst professor I have ever had . She is completely disorganized and expects you to learn the material at home while only lecturing in 'choice' topics . She wastes your time with in class assignments, which are far easier than anything she gives on the test . If possible , avoid . A bad start to my biochemical education.
Dr. Barrette-Ng is a very sweet and caring professor that is honestly trying to help out the students. However, I personally did not like the flipped classroom approach and it was frustrating that the course was so disorganized. It was difficult to know what we had to know and not have to know, but her test are very fair. Lab can be BS though.
Very dedicated to making sure her students succeed! She offers a ton of extra help and is open to changing her teaching style to best help her students. Only thing is, she jumps around in lecture notes and it makes it difficult to follow sometimes. So just make sure to always pay close attention so you know where you are in the notes.
She has improved the course a lot. Part marks existing throughout the semester help you scrape more marks. Some clarity issues might be due students being rusty on some pre-requisite material, but most of it is due to her jumping around topics. I think the key to success is consistency. Cramming is not recommended.
Really great prof. Gives out many practice questions and holds MULTIPLE review sessions before midtermfinal. Labs are just a waste of time and are marked pretty arbitrarily by TAs. A bit confusing at times because she jumps around alot but really cares about students. Posts review notes. Just make sure to go through them all and you'll be fine.
Barrette-Ng is so dedicated and actually wants her students to do well. Had her for both genetics and intro bcem and she always provides so much extra study material. Take advantage of her office hours, and take great notes in lectures, and you won't need the textbook. She sometimes runs overtime but only a few minutes. One of the best profs
Barrette-Ng is the most caring and dedicated professor I have ever had. She genuinely cares about how her students do, and wants to do everything she can to help. Take good notes, listen in class, ask questions if you have any, and guaranteed you will finish with an A. In class assignments were a grade booster, as were labs, so prepare well!
She's a nice person and provides all sort of help if you need it especially with the open door office hours. Her half of the course is very confusing with lots of memorization and the final is application based questions. Go to office hours if you need it because she's very helpful and do suggested practice problems if you can
She is an AMAZING lecturer. However, if you go to see her in person all that enthusiasm is not there. She is actually quite rude in person as she just rushes ur questions and answers as brief as her notes are. Never answers emails either. Make sure to have good notes so you avoid being in her office!
The final exam was fair. No tricks or BS like in Ochem. Her lecture slides are slightly annoying so I wrote my own notes, but she teaches you everything you need to know. Used flashcards to study everything for the final. The labs were horrible though. Waste of time and marked unfairly.
I enjoyed Dr Barrette-Ng as a professor. Lectures are clear and concise and cover everything you need to know. Great knowledge and passion for genetics. Review sessions at the end of the term were very helpful, however, finding her in her office was often difficult this semester. Overall, would recommend. I felt the final was a hard, tho.
Barette-Ng is an okay lecturer, her second half is confusing with LOTS of memorization. Labs are decent as long as you have a smart partner, group work only assignments. The final exam was long and confusing but she provided opportunity for students to have higher marks on exam (out of 100, all written), and is in fact a pretty easy marker.
Really enjoyed her class. She has a passion for her field and really knows what she's talking about! She obviously cares about he students wellbeing and wants to make learning work for you! Definitely one of my favourite profs!
She is very passionate about genetics and her students. The day before our final, she gave up her Sunday just to go through past finals with us and answer questions. She is very approachable and kind. Do all her practice questions and ask lots of questions!
She's very knowledgable, but her grading scheme is awful. She expects you to know a lot for the written exams in the amount of time she lectures for. Also, when you need help, she has office hours, but she's either late or not there.
Although she's passionate, don't let that fool you for the exams. They are tough (I found my 500 bchem course much easier compared to intro). She expects a lot out of you so make sure you understand and can apply what you learn because her questions are all about applications. Make sure you memorize the material as well!
If there is anything you dont understand she is so easy to approach for help! Posts podcasts so you can watch the important parts again. The content is difficult and i wish i had used all the amazing resources she provides. Best professor i have had so far at u of c! Dont buy the textbook.
Great, really enthusiastic prof. She really cares about you and your success in her course and is always ready to help you. Learned a lot. My only complaint is that she can be disorganized which makes some of her lab and in class assignments hard as the grading criteria is a bit unclear. Going to her office is the best way to get in touch with her.
Barrette-Ng was awesome! Could sometimes be a bit disorganized due to all of the quizzes/assignments she had to mark, but it's totally worth it because of how much they'll boost your grade. Don't be too intimidated by some of the material because she provides tons of supplementary tools to really help you study! Excellent prof
I love her, she's incredible and a pleasure to be with in class. I liked her better than Dr. Hansen. She has compassion for her students, very helpful, and can teach the lecture material even with her eyes closed. Wished she taught most of the classes for BCEM/BIOL, that would've been great.
Pretty awesome prof, but i wish her notes would include more information instead of me trying to scribble down everything she said in class. Podcasts were extremely helpful but this class is memorization heavy so beware! Labs were not that difficult and exams were all written which requires deep understanding into the materials.
Very enthusiastic and tries to be there for you. Group work made it more interesting. Midterm was good and similar to the practice but the final was intensely hard. You have to memorize small details and there weren't that many details in the notes so be prepared to write every single thing down!
I have not come across another prof who will go further out of their way to help students succeed as Dr Barrette-Ng does. With filled in lecture notes posted after class, podcasts on important topics, very accessible office hours, and additional review sessions outside of class prior to exams. Hard content but she makes it possible.
Her teaching style is not for everybody, but she makes it very clear that she genuinely wants her students to succeed in her class.
Dr. Barrette-Ng is a great all around person who really cares about her students' learning environment and habits. She emphasizes that her motto of teaching is that "no one gets left behind". She is very conscious about how her lecture is presented based on the students' learning needs. She communicates content with enthusiasm.
Very enthusiastic and willing to help, but her teaching style really did not work for me. Sometimes she spends way too much time on areas that aren't as important. She wants everyone to understand the material but in doing so takes up too much time and the whole class ends up many lectures behind. I enjoyed Dr. Hansen's half much more.
So many people don't like her, but honestly i think she's a fantastic prof. She really does care about her students and wants everyone to succeed. yes, she is over the top and very very enthusiastic, but she is always willing to help. She makes her exam expectations very clear and it is easy to get a good mark in her class if you do the work.
She is AMAZING! Actually cares about you and goes above and beyond to make sure you succeed. She actually reached out to me to see how she could help. Not like any of the profs I've had so far. I wish she taught all of the courses.
Great prof! I wish I could take more classes with her -- she cares about the class and it shows. Hard course, but she makes it doable. She posts so much stuff to help with studying! Go through it and you will do really well.
She is such an amazing professor. A lot of people don't like her teaching style but if you put in effort, you will do so well. She gives SO MANY extra study materials and puts so much effort into ensuring every student succeeds. Obviously, this course is tough, but she makes it easier. I wish more profs were like her!
Dr. BI is such an amazing professor/human in general. She genuinely wants all of her students to succeed, and she will go above and beyond to ensure that you will attain success in her class. She posts TONS of extra material to supplement lectures (textbook not necessary at all for this reason), and the labs are very engaging.
Very nice and willing to help her students. She posts lots of material on D2L, the textbook is not needed at all. Personally, the group RATs, team assignments, and lectures were not helpful for me. I learned almost all of the course material from the D2L content - it is more than sufficient.
I've never had a kinder prof than BN. She provides so much supplementary material, including filled-in lecture notes, summary notes, textbook readings, practice questions, past exams with complete keys, etc. There are NO excuses to not do well, the material is well laid out and straightforward. She tests you on understanding, not pure memorization.
Her problem is that she makes it look so easy and because of that, you take the course a little for granted and then the exams are pretty tough full of application questions. I don't know for others but this type of teaching doesn't work for me (especially the backward study approach).
This was by far the best prof I ever had. She does EVERYTHING to make sure you succeed. There is no reason not to do well. Go see her for help -- she was so amazing in class and office hours. Want to take any class she teaches!
I would never have done so well in this class without this prof! The flipped class really helped -- the in-class assignments and exams really prepared me for the midterm and final. There is NO reason for you to do poorly in this class. Put in the work and you will do awesome. I wish she taught more bcem classes.
I will avoid Barrette-Ng at all costs in the future and so should you. Tons of time is wasted in lecture talking to "elbow partners" and the laboratory component she designed relies on partner work for literally everything, which is the most aggravating thing ever.
Barrette-Ng is the best. Expects you to actually work in lecture to make sure you understand the material and not just sit there. Such a great change from my other classes. The labs are also really cool -- follow lectures and we actually work with the real techniques we learned about. I typically don't like group work but have been loving it.
Such an amazing human being! She is so helpful -- just go to her office hours or email her! She emails back fast. Really cares about you and how you are doing -- I am one of her class reps and her hard work on the course really shows. My favorite course and prof by far.
I miss her!!! Took the class last year. It was so refreshing to have a prof who loves to teach and cares about the course. I ended up loving the course, which I never expected. I would take any course she teaches. She is amazing and helped me figure out how to study.
Didn't personally like her TBL approach to the class, would've rather had her lecture more instead. Helpful in office hours if you need help with a lab.
This prof was the best I have had so far in my degree. She did not just lecture at us and I was able to keep up so much better. Did not have to cram the night before and I still remember the material. Too bad she's not teaching 3rd year bcem. I actually looked forward to coming to class and loved my team -- still work with them.
Dr. Barrette-Ng is a literal gift from god. I have never had a prof that made learning complicated concepts so easy! She provides incredible amounts of study materials, filled in notes, and is literally always accessible! Emails back within MINUTES some times! You'd actually have to try to do badly in one of her courses.
She's a very caring prof. You can tell she really wants the students to succeed. The material for her half of the course wasn't too tough, just quite a bit to remember, and concept maps help make connections (she's really good at giving those). She makes sure to go over tougher concepts a lot. Practice exams are the best way to prepare for exams!
One of the best profs I've had. She is incredibly caring and ensuring that students are learning in an effective way is her top priority. Her final was challenging and you need to pay attention to the details. Study your notes and go to her review session and you'll be fine!
Dr. Barrette- Ng is super kind and approachable for help. Her lecture slides are sub-par and they don't have a nice order to them if you were to look back on them to study. The biggest tip is to re-read the lecture notes after class to understand what she was talking about. The actual content though is pretty easy to learn!
Very kind and helpful prof, she really cares about her students, which is very refreshing. Slides are a little unorganized, but she recaps what she says a lot. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK FOR THIS COURSE... I cracked it literally once for a practice problem
I love this women SO much. She is my favourite prof, im so glad that I have her twice so far. Very caring and breaks up concepts into clear and concise pieces. She is also very kind and friendly, probably one of the kindest profs I've met. Very accessible during her office and helpful as well. Keep it up Dr Barette Ng, we love you!!! <3
Barrette-Ng has been one of the best professors I have had a the uofc. She is incredibly dedicated to her students and is willing to help everyone succeed. Nothing that isn't covered in class will be on the exams. Her classes are engaging and interesting!
Awesome. She really cares about her students and wants you to do well. It is easy but it is doable! She is respected and award-winning.
Very nice and approachable, however, her tests are extremely hard compared to the few practice questions that she does provide, so it is very difficult to know what types of questions she is going to ask
This women is the reason I haven't dropped out of university. She is so kind and polite and breaks concepts up into clear and concise pieces. You can tell she really cares about her students and ensures they are doing well in the course. I would take any class taught by her. It a shame she's not teaching BCEM393, I would have aced that class :(
Even though at at the beginning I was nervous about being teamed up with people I didn't know It worked out so well. This class didn't feel like work at all and it was always fun to attend. Dr. Barrette-Ng clearly cares about what she does and take into account everything the students say!
She's such a good professor even though it was her first time teaching this class. Her exam was difficult, and a lot of the questions required high level thinking (not surprising because he genetics final was similar). Her assignment is pretty easy, but harshly marked.
One of the best and most caring professors I have ever had. She does a really good job going through concepts and relates a few things to her cat (which is great if you love cats). She moved an assignment due date for us because everyone had a midterm for another class which was amazing. Makes lots of time for students. Such a sweet prof
She is a wonderful professor who obviously really cares about her students! We went to her office hours many times to ask questions, and she was always available and helpful. The course material can be tricky, but her lectures and practice questions helped a lot. Final exam questions were fair. Just a really great prof all around!
She really cares about her students' understanding and her awards are well deserved.
THE nicest professor in the whole world, like the nicest ever fr. She makes is clearly passionate about the material as well as teaching it and interacting with her students :) Thank you Dr. Barrete-Ng.
she is simply amazing! Stick to her notes and road map and you will be golden
Dr. Barrette-Ng is one of the best profs in the Biology department. She constantly reinforces lecture materials through concept maps and posts many practice problems. Her assignments and exams were tricky with lots of concept applications, but they are quite fair and reasonable if you have a thorough understanding of the material.
Amazing lecturer and teacher, really cares about students' success and puts in a lot of work. That being said, she really expects you to put the same work in, and her exams are difficult.
Overall, she is a good prof but not as good as in BIOL 311. Does not respond to emails for MONTHS, and won't address questions in person either. SO MUCH GROUP WORK. Assigns groups for tutorials, then makes you sit together in lecture as well. Good lectures and explanations though. Midterm exam was difficult (application style questions).
The course content was interesting, and Dr. Barrette-Ng did her best to communicate her enthusiasm to the class. However, she rarely responded to individual emails and was sometimes dismissive of questions asked during class. Also, this course relies on group work, so if that isn't your thing, be ready for it.
Not a fan of her as a teacher. She starts her portion of the lectures emphasizing that she will help you learn and make sure you are prepared for labs and all the material in the course. I would strongly disagree. The course is very unorganized and the labs are a waste of time. She completely under prepares students for the final exam. Watch out!
Dr. Barrette-Ng was excellent. I really loved her as a teacher. She expects a lot from you, so you have to study. You can't cram the night before the exam because you need to apply your knowledge. The final was tough, but fair. Super accessible for help. Learned a lot.
I really loved Barrette-Ngs energy and passion, but her teaching style was so convoluted, confusing, and messy. She was all over the place. I think it was a case of a professor being too good in their field and not knowing how to dumb it down enough for students.
I loved this prof. She encouraged me and I felt motivated. Lectures were clear and she gave us lots of practice questions. Even offered two review sessions for final exam.
She puts stuff on quizzes that you only have 2 days to study for that she never stresses. They are cumulative but you dont know that. Her teaching style is all over the place and probably results in more passing but lower overall grades.
She thinks shes doing good things but she made me depressed
Don't listen to the other posts. The quizzes are super easy and only worth 1%. They are really helping me break down the material and help me understand. She is a great prof and I love what she is doing with the class.
Really great prof. Actually cares about us and doesnt just lecture at us. I feel like she really wants me to learn. Loving the flipped class so far.
I really wanted to like Barrette-Ng as a prof, she's enthusiastic, but her classes are a disaster. She uses flipped learning, which theoretically could work, but in reality there is so much time is wasted on little group assignments, and then you have to teach yourself all the material as her lecture and summary notes do not go in-depth at all.
I really love the flipped BIOL 331. I am learning so much more than just sitting in class listening to lectures. I actually get to practice right away and really know what I am learning. I wish other courses would do this. I actually get why reading and prepping before class work and am doing this for my other courses. Thanks Dr. B-N!
Loving her! Actually feel like I am learning not just memorizing. This is what I came to university for. Loving the group problems. Its nice to have teammates to work with.
Don't be deceived by the good reviews. Even though she is super enthusiastic, you will not learn a single thing from her. She teaches basically nothing in lectures and make you listen to podcasts at home on your own time. Class time was just used for team activities. She made the course way too easy but didn't teach anything. She also DOESN'T REPLY
She is amazing! She cares so much about our learning and gives us every single possible study tool. Super accessible and gave us two review sessions for midterm. Don't be afraid to reach out to her for help. So helpful! I learned so much from this course -- thought I would hate cell bio but did not because of her.
Im finishing my degree and she is the best prof Ive had so far. Loving her in BIOL 331. Rarely found a prof that actually cares about how I learn. Loving the flipped class been able to study at my own pace in my own way. Loving my team too.
One of my best profs. So caring and always ready to help. I havent met a prof like that in a long time. Listens to feedback and goes above and beyond to give us any tool to help succeed. So accessible too! I have met with her so many times. So helpful
I found Dr. Barrette-Ng to be a much better teacher in this course than in BIOL311. The mandatory group work went better than expected, though I understand that it's not everyone's thing. Be prepared to set aside 30-90 minutes each week for her online readings, but otherwise the course is interesting enough.
Dr. Barrette Ng is so enthusiastic about teaching and helping everyone succeed. Attend class, study hard, and talk to her one-on-one for help and you will do well. Her "flipped learning" style wasn't for everyone, but it did help with staying on top of the material. The textbook isn't necessary, but make sure to use her practice questions to study.
