One of the greatest teachers. Makes the class extremely fun and it helps that he is very passionate about anthropology. i wasnt intersted in the class at all b4 taking it, but now i think i'll take his second class. RECOMMENT THIS TEACHER to anyone who wants to have a fun class and at the same time have a good chance of getting an A
kool teacher. would reccomend his class. dont really need the book. just pay attention to his powerpoints and you'll be fine. great teacher made almost every class fun
Had a blast with this guy! If you take notes on the powerpoint and come to every class, you will be fine. The exams are not as hard as he makes them out to be :) but make sure you know your stuff! Also, make sure you choose wisely for your project partner- find someone who actually cares about their grade who'll put in as much time as you will.
Take this teacher! Class was fun and interesting Pay attention to your notes because the tests are right off the notes (word to word) We have more than enough time for the project; only thing is choose a topic that you feel comfortable with Would reccommend this teacher
Awesome teacher, very informative and knows wtf he's talking about! Make sure you attend EVERY SINGLE class session and take notes. Btw, he gives you all the ?'s to the midterms BEFOREhand! And the final is cumilitive but easy. Make sure you have a GOOD partner for the powerpoint presentation or else you're screwed. HIGH RECOMMENDED TEACHER!!!!!!!!
He is tough on attendance other than that he is a cool guy with humors . If your always late do not take his class otherwise you will find yourself endager of getting drop from his class because he do drop people who is always late no matter when even two week away from the quarter.
he's funny, take notes, dont' be late or absent without calling in, cool to talk to during office hours. do all reviews and check with classmates on answers
i think he is cool..but his class is hard to get an A...i just missed one class but i got A in tests, i still got only a B...
Greatest professor I've had at De Anza, he is like a prophet. Helps guide you into a new mode of thinking, and helps you to emancipate from cultural constructs of identity and helps you to distinguish between biological "facts" and cultural "realities". Easy A if you show up (on time) and understand the material.
GREAT TEACHER!!! hes my favorite teacher at deAnza. extremely funny and smart. youll learn a lot. make sure to check in if youre absent and write good notes.
I can understand why he got such a good rating, he's funny and interesting, but other than that his class is a waste of time. I haven't learned anything and info in his class conflicts with previous anth classes I've taken. Never has class materials ready, regularly cuts class short sometimes up to an hour. WASTE OF TIME
4 those of u who're only wanting to take this class for emergency credits & have different career goals/majors avoid him at all costs; expects you to go out & find a 'subculture' & study these ppl like a true, experienced anthropologist would do, w/out giving a clear def. of what a subculture is; may be smart but condescending & patronizing @ times
Easy A IF YOU come to all class days on time! attendence is 20% of your grade. Stresses attendence and lecture notes. Everything he talks about will be on his test, in fact, he gives you the test questions as a study guide. Highly recomend this teacher if your lookinf for a gpa booster!
He's an awesome teacher. REALLY interesting class, you learn alot. Pr. Nengo is really funny and amuzing, it's not easy to get an A unless you read and study. I suggest always coming to class and take GOOD NOTES. More than 50% of midterms/tests are based on the notes. Just study and you'll get an A. He tells you the questions to tests sometimes.
Nengo is the man! His lectures are insightful and provocative; there is never a dull moment. His tests are pretty hard because they're all essay questions, but if you use study groups you'll do fine. I definitely recommend Nengo!
First of all, show up to class as he takes off points. Interesting lectures most of the time. He gives you the test questions before hand, so there's no reason you can't get an A. You have to do a sub-culture project, which is fun if you have the right group members. Overall, class was pretty good. He's a cool guy.
Very laid back, fun profesor. Be sure to take detailed notes and to write as much detail as possible on exam questions. His class is very interesting and always entertaining. Easy A if you put in the effort.
It has been an interesting experience, highly recommended !
This guy lays it down. He cares about attendance, but there is no hw just tests and a project. Learned a lot about anthropology! Dr. Nengo does a great job explaining the implications of all this stuff and making it interesting. But this isnt an easy a.
Professor Nengo is strict with attendance, but aside from that he is chill. Attend class, pay attention, ask questions if you are confused, take notes, complete the study guides & you should be fine.
His lectures are interesting and fun, but even if you take notes and do everything right, attend class all the time, do what he asks, you still can end up with a B- pretty easily. I would recommend finding another professor for this subject who is a little clearer about his expectations and won't throw any curve balls. Find someone else.
If you are used to his Anth 1 grading, prepare for a rude awakening.. his test grading is a bit harder, but not too bad. His lectures are really entertaining but his grading is at times pretty inconsistent and random (especially with the presentation).. Be sure to be thorough.. it seems thats the only way to really do well.. but overall, its not i
Nengo is awesome! He is so entertaining and lectures do not feel as tedious as one would think regular lecture classes would be. He is so funny and super easy. He tells you exactly what will be on the test and just as long as you get wordy and elaborate the questions, you'll do fine. Just be sure to always be in class on time.. attendence with him is HUGE.
Nengo seems hard, but grading was easy on the midterms. He gives the questions on the study guides. He gives time in class to complete them. Didn't always cover all questions in class, but can find info in book. Have to answer 1 page per question, but grading is easy if you do that. Group presentation at the end; be prepared to answer questions.
he's a pretty cool guy and smart, but he trips if u miss class and u can't be late or he'll mark u absent, he gives u the questions for the test but only picks five of them for the test, they're kinda hard to remember tho.......and there's also a group presentation at the end....that wasn't too bad
very smart guy. hes hilarious. definetily a fun class. Hes strict as hell about attendance and takes roll at the very first minute of class by passing around a sheet. if u sit in the front row and are 1 minute late ur screwed cuz if ur late he marks u absent. takes hecka points off for absence. easy tests and almost no homework. just show up.
Dr. Nengo is the best anthropology teacher ever. His lectures are clear. All the class notes are on powerpoint. He gives you the test questions in the beginning of the term. He will only ask 5 of 12 question in each test. There is one group project. He makes you think about anthropology not as a science but as an everyday reality. Easy A !!!
Nengo is awesome! Coming to class is like going to a really informative comedy session. You learn a lot and you are never bored.
Very funny teacher. Class is really laid back. Didn't study and barely took any notes and I still got an A-. Many people had trouble with the midterms though personally I didn't find them that hard. Just make sure you show up everday because attendance makes up like 10% of your grade or something.

Absolutely terrible teacher. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. gives you 5 eassay questions every week. You are expected to know all of them and be able to write a page-long answer to 5 random questions he picks out of 15. He grades extremely hard on the essay questions. Strict on attendance.
Pros, he gives you the exam questions ahead of time, he's an entertaining guy, the powerpoint presentation is an easy ten minutes and you got plenty of time to get it done. Cons, he expects a page/page&half answer to each question, he assigns long books, he's strict on attendance. Look, he gives you the essay questions, just answer 'em.
Very good teacher. Although exams are hard, he gives you all the questions at the beginning of the quarter so they are easy to study. Makes the class entertaining every day.
Nengo is the man! I will ONLY take him for my anthro classes! Just be responsible and show up, this isnt highschool guys! I highly recommend taking one of his classes!!
entertaining/hilarious guy but you've got to work hard to get a good grade. do the readings, listen in class, take good notes and keep an open mind :)
This teacher is exceptional: He made class extremely entertaining. He's really funny: his lectures are centralized on personal experiences and modern topics. As long as you go to class (A MUST!) and keep up with some of the reading, you will do well. Make sure to pay attention to the notes he supplies online and use it in the written tests.
you have to show up to class to pass because his lectures are crucial to pass the exams. He is very funny and he knows the subject really well but he was hard for me
Hilarious, engaging, intelligent (if a bit arrogant.) Very entertaining class that will make you think about yourself and the world around you in a way you probable haven't before. Highly recomended.
Rude, make mean and cruel jokes at other people's expenses, and is just a plain JERK. My first prof at DA that I did not like. His class was hard. He will MAKE FUN of you for being 1 min late. He grades very harshly. I did the best that I could and got a C. Essays-like tests and a huge book report. He wont hesistate to give you an F or a WF. BEWARE
as a teacher, very intelligent, very knowledgeable. high school students are easily smitten by his intelligence. comes off as a narcissist, and a bit racially bitter. tests are essays only, no way to bs. have lots of time to spare memorizing , dates, concepts, and key terms. his classes are 4 units, but could should be 5.
Okay, Professor Nengo is a nice guy, but he is super hard/very RANDOM/picky when it comes to grading. you could write the PERFECT answer but if it is not what he is lookin for. He's also biased and he tries to make his class hard on his students. He didnt even tell us when exactly we were going to present our presentations and made every1 stressed!
Mr Nengo is a really nice guy. His class was very interesting and enjoyable: he joked around a lot, which made students to learn material easily. You should read a book a lot, because he mostly explains concept and provides it by examples, but to learn well you should definitely work at home. TESTS ARE HANDWRITTEN, NOT MULTIPLE CHOICE
you dont understand what he talks about half of the time. he always pick on whoever he can pick on, just to embarrass them. his test questions are pretty much useless, nothing you learn in this class will help you out in life. you dont learn anything in his class. 90% of the students cheat on the test kus its ridiculous. hes funny though.
He gave out the test questions in advance but it didn't help. I didn't know exactly what the he wanted me to write on the tests...all of them are essays. If you are not good at essays you will not pass the class. I took him in the summer and it was hard because I had to read a huge book and do a book report with other people that ended up dropping.
Not a great teacher. Not very clear but very fun attitude. Thought he was great though. Tests are very very hard. Studied my ass off to get an A- which was totally worth it.
Ok, Nengo has his flaws, he's not always clear and he doesn't provide reasons for grading you down on the test, but he gives a great class; if you are interested in the subject and you do a lot of reading you will learn a lot. He has a lot of knowledge and experience and holds great class discussions.
I've taken ANTH 1 and 4 with Nengo and he is the best teacher I've had at De Anza! He's made me want to switch my major from English! He is an amazing teacher to anyone who actually wants to learn something useful!
If you want an easy-A, skip this class. If you want to be pushed, questioned, and interested, take it. This was my favorite class, it was also one of the hardest. If you're tired of teachers who don't teach, take this class for a challenge. He's passionate about his subject, as a teacher should be. And he's hilarious--the lectures are entertaining!
If you want to learn, take this class. If you want an easy A, DO NOT take this class. If you like class discussions and like to get torn apart, then Nengo is the guy. Tests are hard, feels like this class should be 5 units. I pushed as hard as I could to get an A.
I took Anth1 & Anth2 with Nengo. He is the funniest, and the best teacher I've had in De Anza. Midterms are not that easy, project is hard work. But you will learn a lot, and be entertained throughout the course. Recommend his class to everyone.
He most definitely knows what he's teaching and I'll commend him for that (in addition to a hell of a sense of humor), but I consistently received low test scores and he never explained why. The book report we had to do was absolutely confusing and it was never clear on what date we were supposed to present. Approach this class with caution.
Lets see.... I would def. say I learned alot.. I did not enjoy the learning aspect though because there is so much reading and you lose participation points if he calls on you and you do not remember stuff from the readings. Midterms are hard to figure out, study the weekly questions WEEKLY or you will get really behind. His humor is really sexsist
Nengo is great, funny as hell. The test are not hard, he gives you the questions in the first week, like any college course you have to have the discipline to study until you know it. and on the tests you only have fill a 1-1.5 page per answer which is very minimal. He has a unique perspective on life and i enjoyed his class everyday
I took ANTH 1 and 2 with Nengo. He's a great teacher, and really gets the students to think. He also has a great sense of humor. His classes are a lot of work, but it's easy to get an A if you pay attention and put in the effort. Do the weekly questions as you go! Probably my most time-consuming class, but well worth it.
I took him for both Physical and Cultural Anthropology. He's good at teaching and he has a lot of humor. Class isn't boring. The only issue is the project presentation and the essays he give. The midterms are extremely hard and are 4 essays each. When you write the essays if you forget to put it one term, you will lose 5/25 per essay question.
If an easy ride is what you're looking for, Nengo may not be for you. Yes, you have to put in a lot of work and studying for tests, but Nengo is one of the few teachers in one of the few classes that I felt was worth it. He has great humor, is very conversational, and knowledgable. He teaches at De Anza the same way he does at UC Berkeley. TAKE!
Nengo does a lot more then teach anthropology very very well with lectures that leave you fiening for more at the end of class. but he makes you motivate you! honestly nengo is my new #1 teach of my education.. life changing.. great guy. great class. if you pass it is very rewarding. HIGHLY RECCOMENDED!!
Nengo's great.. he got me thinking about actually majoring in Anthropology. He's a wonderful teacher; the only time i was bored in class was when we watched a video. His class is time-consuming, but worth it in the end. You really have to study for his exams, but in the end you'll leave with more knowledge =) i plan to take him for anth2. take him!
I didn't think i would pass his class until i went to his office to get his help. Really, all you have to do is DO ALL THE READING assigned. it's alot, but if you do it, the essay questions (that BTW are the midterms and finals 4-5 questions each) will be a piece of cake! Lots of writing and reading, but all interesting. I'll be taking him again
Very interesting and active teacher. Will teach you a lot but you just have to pay attention. Grade is easy just remember a few key words on exam and you will ace it if you talk about the key words. Gives you questions ahead of exam, essay exams, so easy to think about what you will write and to pass. Pay attention and show up to get an A
Class is interesting and fun! No homework ever!! 2 or 3 extra credit opportunities. But, there are 3 exams and they are super hard and he's looking for specifics so unless you're willing to work hard on those then you'll do poorly. Also, he's very rude sometimes
This guy is HILARIOUS. His class notes aren't really helpful to answer his questions, so your going to have to do a lot of reading. But if you get the questions down and remember the general idea, you'll pass his midterms relatively easily. And being in cultural anthro requires you to participate in a project. 10 hours with another culture.
Favorite teacher I've had at DeAnza. Really makes you think outside of your comfort zones. Plus he's entertaining to listen to. You just gotta pay attention and try to stay on top of the weekly questions and you'll do fine in the class. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you should try to make it to every class because tests involve class discussions.
The midterm and final in his class are very difficult. You would have to study really hard for both. However, he is a pretty good teacher, and you will learn a lot. There isn't a lot of homework for his class, but you will need to study for the test. Also, his lectures aren't really helpful for the discussion questions (not HW but needed for tests)
If you have any issues with evolution,do yourself a favor and do not take his class. He will challenge your views and try to break you. Plus he is super arrogant.
He is very disorganized. Tells students to not come late to the class but he is NEVER on time, I mean NEVER. I have no problem with evolution and I do think that he has problem with creationism. But he skips through the material and expects you to be ready for the test following day. I would NOT recommend him because he is very disorganized.
I gotta admit it was a little tough at first but there was nothing hard about the tests he gives you because he gives you the test questions in advanced so if you fail its your fault dude. overall i though he was funny i cant wait to take him again
He is the worst teacher i've ever had. I got 100% on three exams but i learned nothing out of this class. This class is easy as long as you repeat writing the essay questions he gives in advance. WARNING! If you just fool around then it's possible to get 20% on all three exams. I've seen people getting 0%, 20%, 40% on their exams. Repeat Essays=100
If you have problem with english, do not take him. I didn't understand about 40% of his speech due to his accent. He threatens you and scares you off during the first week, but his tests are already given out. there is nothing to be so hard about this class
Took him in the summer for the lab. It wasn't bad since all you do is come to class and do the lab work. There are 2 tests and 1 final. Each test is based on 1 - 3 labs each, and the final is comprehensive. You don't really interact with Nengo or as much since the lab work is easy and straight forward, but from talking to him a little, he's cool.
IT'S NENGO TIME!!!
He is completely incompetent as a professor. He is difficult to understand and has goes off on random tangents most of the period. He may give his test questions out ahead of time, but the questions are incomprehensible and he requires you to write a page and a half to answer something that should only be one or two sentences. Avoid him.
Funny teacher, but not very helpful or fair. If you ask a question, prepared to be embarrassed and humiliated in front of the entire class. Even if you know the material well, be prepared to only receive 25 out of 100 on the midterms. He grades extremely unfairly and gives excuses for not being able to give explanations for the grades.
anyone that likes him is rating him based on his personality, not his professionalism. he has ridiculous expectations for not answering questions clearly and putting people down for asking. i took him twice, thinking i got a bad grade the first time because i was young and unprepared but his grading is hard and doesnt clearly explain his expectation
I took him for both physical and cultural. He's a good teacher since he makes his class fun, and you would learn a lot from his class, but his physical anthro class is way better than his cultural anthro class because of a ridiculous project in his ANTH 2 class and his ANTH 2 test questions are harder. Take him for ANTH1 but not for ANTH 2.
Loves to joke, though I think it is a tactic to engage new college students and keep their interest. When he gets serious though, he is clearly a PhD that knows his craft. His lectures were very interesting and informed, I truly enjoyed his class. It was challenging, I had to work hard, but I think he pays attention and rewards hard work.
Funny. He is a smart professor and it's not an easy class, but that's what makes it such an interesting class! Makes you think and you learn lots.
Great teacher. Its an interesting class and if you do the work you will get an A hands down
Do the paper at the begging and you'll be good, he's a really easy grader and very knowledgable,,, He has first hand experience in the field and got a Doctorates from Harvard. Good man great sense of humor and wonderful presentation of the material.
First class ever to get a D in! My husband took another teacher and got a B. This teacher grades insanely hard and tests are very difficult.
I've also taken Anthro 1 and 1L with Nengo. Undisputedly the best anthro professor in the bay area, let alone on campus. Study, get interested, and participate--or be prepared for the D.
He is a very interesting teacher. His lectures are fun and are also filled with his field stories.Tests can be hard but he is always available to help. I was not doing so well but passed the class. If I had to take the class again I would still take it with him.
This class and professor changed my life. He is more than willing to help you understand what he is teaching. Take good notes and enjoy his lectures. Taking Dr. Nengo is a privilege ...no other way around it...the man is amazing!
he thinks that anthropology is everyone's entire life, it's not. i attended EVERY class and did the weekly papers (which i actually researched and wrote thoughtful answers) and i received an F, not even a D.Is ridiculous and will point it out to the class when you look like you are already having a bad day. I cannot believe he is a teacher.
Very hit-or-miss. Holds high standards, midterms are very hard but sometimes eases up. Sometimes generous with grades, sometimes not. Sometimes fun to listen to, sometimes he's chewing someone out (maybe you). Expect either an A or an F, good way to check is if you aren't doing well after midterm 1 BAIL OUT.
I really wanted to learn in his class but came away sooo disappointed. Nice enough guy but incredibly arrogant and obtuse. Very small-minded, imho. Not very good at helping you learn, acts like its your fault/ takes it personally if you dont understand something. Doesnt make good use of class time or hw, doesnt post powerpoints/ class notes online
I know the majority of the 1st yr students who take Nengo consider him hard ect ect, but if your serious about taking something away from college and you have actually successfully tackled Major Courses this course is a cake walk. If your looking for a class where you don't have to try or participate look else where!!
Lots of reading, lots of memorization. But Nengo is extremely passionate about what he teaches, and that helps a bit, even if it doesn't make the class any easier. He sometimes gets defensive and argues with students, though. First midterm was okay, second was super hard, final was in between. Do any extra credit, and study for everything.
He will make you work, so if you're looking for an easy A don't take him. Overall fun class, learned a lot but he can be tough on grading. Study hard for the exams as they are not that easy. He is a great guy though past his chilly disposition.
He is a great professor that I don't think anyone can ever forget. Anthro wasn't my kind of subject 2 take but I had no choice & I'm glad I took this class. His lectures are very interesting & interactive. He is very nice & helpful. Absolutely not an easy "A" class but not his fault the material is difficult. He offers extra credit & a good curve.
HARD to get an A! His tests are multi choice but VERY detailed. Need to know bones, differences of who has which bone or who doesn't, and exact dates/time periods. I'm a straight A student and I still barely managed an A- after studying hard. He is an intelligent and funny man, just tough. Study hard, take detailed notes in class & in the book.
I managed to receive a solid B in his class, although i was hoping for an A. There's lots and lots of reading from the textbook. The questions from the midterms and final all come from the textbook and his lectures. So take notes on his lectures, and read the textbook thoroughly. He's a funny guy, but he likes to pick on random students...
Nengo is one of the reasons why I have enjoyed my college experience after high school. Never met someone so passionate. The subject matter he taught was able to really resonate with me and I left with way more than getting a good grade. He expects your best and show should you. Work hard and you will be rewarded.
I am writing this comment 4 years after taking this class with Mr. Nengo, a couple weeks from graduation from UCSD as an Engineer. I decided to look up Mr. Nengo and write this because his class not only taught me more about the world in one quarter than I have in my entire life, but he also taught me how to be a college student by working hard.
Wonderful professor! Definitely take him for cultural anthropology. The test were easy as long as you read the chapters and did the practice test that the book provides. Basically those questions are the ones you get on the midterms :)
I took a class with Mr. Nengo 5 years ago and I was hooked in the study of Anthropology. Thanks to his passion I was able to continue studying physical Anthropology and will continue to do so.
Nengo is by far the most interesting professor I have ever me. He is extremely passionate about his field work and ultimately wants his students to pass. You, like any other college student, should rely mainly on the textbook and take good notes, however, Nengo is always there to help.
Awesome professor, very smart man, very intellectual and interesting person all around. The way he teaches his Physical Anthro course is just amazing, he answers questions in a way that makes sense and the class is very well structured, philosophy at the beginning and explanations at the end of the quarter. Great class, the best I've had in 3 years
doesnt give answers to questions on purpose if he feels a few people arent paying attention in class, lecture is good but tests dont match the lectures. prepare for curveball questions on tests from things you didnt cover in class "that you should have read about" except there is no required reading. good entertaining lectures and presentation.
The class is hard for some people only because of the amount of material needed to learn and understand, but the good thing about the class is you have a very passionate professor that knows how to lecture. this class is easy if you read everything and take notes, but don't expect to take the class and walk out with an A, you need to work for it.
Nengo is a excellent professor. You will not fall asleep in his lectures. He is absolutely hilarious and has a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw from. The class is difficult, but if one studies and prepares for every exam then they will pass. Showing your interest in his class will make him want to help you. He is hard, but fair.
Best teacher ever! He's so funny and passionate that you won't want to miss class. If you stay on top of the readings and pay attention you should be just fine. He is beyond considerate and even curves both midterms as well as the final. If you're looking for an easy and interesting class, Nengo is the homie!
First time at DeAnza, took 2 classes. Let me tell you, the difference between teachers makes the biggest difference. I had to drop my other class because of what a horrible teacher she was. Nengo makes sure you understand, and if you don't, he explains it again. He is very funny and knows how to keep you interested.
All around great professor and guy. Really knows his stuff and is a Harvard grad. Show up everyday but the way the class is you're going to want to do that anyways. Gives extra credit if you do. Only problem was that the final was the hardest test I have ever took but curves everything. Nengo is the MAN!
Great professor. Nengo made the class very entertaining. If you show up everyday to class, you will get one letter grade up guaranteed. Would definitely recommend and take again. The only difficult part of the class was the 5 page essay but other than that, class was very simple.
Nengo is a pretty cool guy. He has pretty interesting lectures, even though the topic was not that interesting. The midterms and final can be difficult if you don't study, so do so. You should also take notes in class, because there are some things he says in lecture that are not in the book. He's also Obama's cousin so yeah.
Professor Nengo is a teacher who loves what he teaches and gives no quarter. Behind that hilarious facade is a man who's tests border on the sadistic (but there's a curve, don't worry). If you want a teacher knows what he's talking about? Go for Nengo. Want a teacher who makes it amusing? Take Nengo. Want an easy class? Don't take Nengo's class!
I have taken Nengo for two different anthropology classes. De Anza is really lucky to have such a great professor who not only challenges you but also cares that you make it. If you want to learn something take this class, I have had few classes that have left such an impression on me. He is very brilliant but humble.
Make this one of your "never miss" classes. Nengo expects hard work but he's always there to help you succeed. Just work hard and you'll be fine. It is a lot of reading so try your best to keep up. Oh and also, he's hilarious.
He is an awesome teacher!!! It is a really easy class if you do your work. And he cares about his students so he will answer any questions you have. He makes his lectures very interesting! At the end of the quarter he invited our class to BJ's for drinks! Just do your work and you will be sure to get an A!!!
The class was a good class, but his humor tends to be politically incorrect, which can be off putting to some people. He is also transparent about some of his political and religious views, such as how he's a humanist.
Made it clear that he did not want to teach this class. When asked for help he would tell us to "refer to the lab manual" and refuse to give us help. In one lab, everyone did it wrong AND he even checked us off before we began the lab but it was still our fault and everyone had to redo it. Also the tests are ridiculously hard and not curved.
This teacher trails off way too much in his lectures and I hate it because I feel like i'm not learning anything. I like funny teachers but the way this teacher trails off is immensely inappropriate. Also, after our midterm, he gave back our tests and then said the name of our grades out loud. Very rude and embarrassing for people.
Easy A. He teaches you life lessons with a bit of Anthropology. Most of the Anthropology you learn comes from his lectures + readings that you do in groups of 5 or 6. Nengo is a pretty cool guy.
No in class instruction waste of time. Listens to music does not teach
Take Mr. Nengo if you like to learn both how and why you are learning about the curriculum, and how it applies outside of the classroom. Nengo has a Phd from Harvard, and lots of knowledge. You have to show initiative in his class to succeed. Attend class, do the group readings, participate, and you'll pass with ease.
He is by far the most inspirational person I have ever met. He's a bit intimidating, but he's a very cool guy. His class was very difficult. All tests are based on lectures and the text. The key to doing good in his class is to show him that you're doing your best. PUT IN EFFORT AND YOU'LL BE FINE.
Stay on top of the textbook readings (and maybe take some notes). Information from the lecture and textbook will be on the test. His tests are very difficult, but he does curve them. So study hard! I didn't particularly care for his lectures. He is biased and tries to get his students to agree with his perspectives.
Horrible! Worst teacher ive ever had.
I have never seen anyone fail so miserbaly at their job as this "teacher" does at educating. His passion is paleoanthropolgy but that doesnt sustain a living. He teaches at DeAnza so he can get funding for his fossil research. You can tell he hates people
Bad professor. Thick accent, condescending at times. Midterm material is not covered in class or in textbook. When time to submit grades came, he forgot to put in one of my midterms, destroying my whole grade. Beware of this horrible professor.
Nengo is a wonderful & inspirational professor. To me, he is the "Mr. Feeny" of Anthropology. He definitely cares about the well-being & intellectual development of his students. His lessons are created in a way so that we can critically attach & reflect on our own lives. Success in his course engages the students to be conscientious and motivated.
Dr. Nengo is arguably, if not, the best Professors I've had. His engagement with real issues and how he applies them to Anthropology is phenomenal! If you haven't taken any intercultural studies classes to prep you for Harvard level discussions surrounding cultural & social constructs, be prepared to GROW as a scholar. Nengo gives it straight.
Dr. Nengo is a brilliant renowned paleoanthropologist and passionate instructor. He has begun taking a handful of student to Kenya during the summer to study anthropology and human origins( I was one of them). You can tell he cares about the community college experience and educating people about ourselves. Study for tests and attend lectures.
Dope lecturer and inspirational teaching style. Received his Masters and PhD from Harvard. Critical thinking is a required skill but will be worth it in the end. No homework except for reading. Make sure to study all maaterial for the testsame and you will get an A.
Nengo is probably my favorite teacher at De Anza! Not only is he really helpful, he cares about the success of his students! He is really inspiring and really reinforces the importance of an education and taking advantage of the abundance of resources that we have! I would definitely say he has put a positive impact on my life
Nengo is an intelligent man. I learned a lot about society and myself. Take notes whenever he speaks or when watching a film, and read a chapter of the textbook weekly. If you enjoy an engaging teacher who doesn't simply lecture at you, Nengo is great. If you don't like participating and being present in class, don't take his class.
He is a professor who wants his students to learn about his topic in class. He will not take silly arguments or antics very lightly. If you are however a student who openly shows that you are dedicated to learning, especially in his class, then he will give you a grade that you are willing to get in his class. He does joke from time to time too.
Nengo is an amazing teacher. Always ending class with a quote or question that will leave you questioning what you perceive as true. Witty and funny, most of his classes are very entertaining and he has a talent for making you push yourself. He has challenging coursework and intricate assignments and projects but they are all very immersive and fun
Nengo is a great professor. I have taken him for both physical and cultural anthropology. I have come out of both classes inspired and more motivated. The way he teaches anthro makes it interesting and I love how he shows how much he cares about his students.
Professor Nengo was by far the best professor I had while at De Anza. He was the professor who taught me not only how to learn at a college level but to enjoy learning. He gave the best advice, "Take copious notes." I've used that advice for every class and every meeting in my professional career ever since. He inspired me to research my genealogy.
Great guy and amazing teacher, Nengo provides intellectual and thought provoking lectures thatll have you thinking outside the box; this was true for the 3 classes Ive had with him. Hes a professor who cares about his students and does what he can to help us succeed. If you're attentive in his lectures and do the reading the class will be easy.
Nengo was the best professor I had at De Anza. He challenged me while encouraging me throughout my time at De Anza. He also exposed me to the multiple roads available in Anthropology and was easy to talk to outside of class. Nengo doesn't give out grades, you earn them. Show up to class, be engaged, ask questions, do the reading, and you'll dogreat
Took Anthropology 1 with Nengo and its one of my best to date. Had tried twice with other lecturers but none got through to the students like he did. Learnt a lot that correlates with my life today.
Great class, good teacher, just wished the material learned in class was going to be on the tests. His midterms are all based on the book readings so get your highlighter ready...
Nengo is an interesting teacher. His lectures have nothing to do with the tests which is odd. All though in class he always says everything he says is SO important. We retook all of our midterms (2 of them) and our one quiz. Wouldn't take again. Lots of rants about politics and if you aren't aligned with how he thinks, you feel very inferior.
He does not teach the material. Spends lectures on his philosphy on politics and life. When the test grading curve starts with a D its the teacher not the students
Stay away from this teacher! Gets mad and humiliates students when they asks questions but lectures us like we're idiots. Also his sense of humor is unprofessional and offensive. I didn't sign up for a stand up show I came to learn
NENGO is a great instructor, you need to be present to know what is going on, his quizzes and exams are tough but possible to get a good grade. I loved him!
Passionate about ANTH and information heavy class. Prepare to take a lot of notes and do a lot studying if you want to pass his class. Retaining info from both lectures and textbook is crucial if you expect to pass his tests. Tests are a combination of multiple choice and short answers. If you skip class, make sure you grab notes from someone.
Professor Nengo is a great teacher and is VERY passionate about anthropology, and passes it on to his students. Most of the homework is done in groups, as the readings are split among one another and you are to create multiple choice questions for the readings and answer them. The class IS lecture heavy, so attend! You can pass with effort.
Horrible Teacher! I had to teach myself Anthropology from the readings. He never helped just criticized us for not knowing the material and for us failing the tests. Stay away!
Had him for a study abroad module in Kenya: among other things, he yelled at a student until she cried in earshot of others (when she asked a reasonable question), was condescending and seemed to have no interest in getting to know us and our academic interests, and droned on in lectures: managed to make human evolution boring-and I study it!
