Lectures are packed with heavy material and can be hard to follow. Almost dropped the class in the first week but really glad I didn't. Once you get used to the lecture style and material, he's super interesting. Also wants his students to succeed so he grades pretty nicely. Do the readings and show up and you should get an A.
Really nice and wants you to succeed. Lectures are dry for sure, but he has dry humor so it really depends on what you like in a lecturer. Overall, really liked this class, thought the reading material was reasonable and very interesting. The stuff you learn here is extremely applicable to real world.
Ishan will give you an A if you push hard for it. Talk to him in person and show respect, those helped a great deal. But it's a bad course, poorly organized you don't learn much. So depends on what you want.
Almost didn't take this class but glad I did. Learned a lot and enjoyed his lectures. Nice to be able to focus on material and not worry about grade.
Ishan is the worst college professor that I have had. His lectures were unbearable because he would ramble about things that nobody could comprehend, and was just generally boring. I never skip class, but after the first week of class I never went to another lecture. Avoid this professor if at all possible.
I am a Princeton student from Michigan and was studying at theUniversity of Michigan for one term. Dr. Joshi's class is one of my best undergraduate experiences overall. He is incredibly knowledgeable, brilliant and has a dry humor that is refreshing in a classroom. He also advised me well on my future career path. Thanks!!!
Dr. Joshi is a poly sci rock star. His lectures are a refreshing change from my other mundane schedule and I love his dry humor. I put in the work which was reasonable and got an A. No stress! I hope I can take Dr. Joshi again for a future class.
Professor Joshi is an incredibly intelligent guy, whose lectures are filled with personal anecdotes and good humor. He is very generous with office hours and took the time to write me an excellent letter of recommendation. Even if you know nothing about political science, take his class! I left every class feeling truly inspired.
I love Professor Joshi's style of teaching. He makes the subject interesting and has an out-of-the-box perspective on politics and issues in government and the world that makes him stand out from other instructors that I have had. I would recommend taking his class!
Prof. Joshi can be dull, but if you appreciate his sharp wit and nuanced humor, you'll love his classes. They're very focused on the lectures and readings, but the exams and papers are so open ended that you can tailor it to your knowledge for the most part. He can be confusing on what he wants but he's an easy grader and a kind soul!
Prof. Joshi is really intelligent and a kind guy. His lectures can sometimes be boring, but it helps if you're genuinely interested in the topic. Problem sets were challenging but he is super helpful in office hours and responds to emails fast. If you attend lecture and skim the readings, class should be an easy A.
Joshi is a good lecturer and the course material was very interesting. He gives good resources to learn from and has a dry sense of humor. Grades vary heavily because he uses a grader, who this semester played favorites. Definitely need to listen and take notes during every minute of class. Long written exams- read the textbook to pass these.
My highlight this semester was definitely Dr. Joshi's class. I loved that I could focus on the material, which was eye-opening and pure pleasure. I am a bit of a nerd, but I really think he can take an otherwise dull subject and make it interesting. I would definitely recommend him as a professor for this or any class he teaches. Thank you!!!!!!
Professor Josh is incredibly intelligent. He enjoys teaching his students and makes time during office hours for additional help if you need it. You will find that his tests are very fair and that he grades fairly as well. You put in the work, you earn a good grade.
Great class taught by professor joshi. he's a brainy dude with a kind heart.
Professor Joshi is an amazing professor and I would take him again. We did some reading, but worth it. The lectures are so interesting and I loved attending the class. Prepare for the tests and you'll be fine.
Ok so yes Joshi is insanely "smart and witty". This class requires you to be a History guru/nerd. If you ask a question and you either are wrong or have something confused, he corrects you in the most sarcastic way. Makes kids look like idiots in front of the class. Dude needs to just chill out but he is very knowledgable and smart.
Prof. Joshi is absolutely Brilliant. He is so kind and helpful and always welcoming to his students during office hours for extra help, clarification or career advice. I am from Brazil and I really love his sense of humor. I think Americans may not be used to this style, which is subtle and non-aggressive. I LOVE IT and so did my flat mate!
Took PS 372 and PS 389 a couple of years ago and loved them both. Prof. Joshi is super sweet and smart! I am psyched to take him again this Fall!!
Ishan is super flexible and caring toward his students. He also knows so much about IR so if this is an area that interests you, you will love talking to him. He likes talking to students who know about world politics and ask questions about it. He makes the class accessible to everyone financially and intellectually.
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Joshi takes the material to another level and treats everyone the same. A really nice guy who is always wanting to help students and give advice. He also wrote a really nice letter of rec for me and if possible I will take his class again and would recommend it wholeheartedly to prospective students.
Really enjoyed the class because of the prof. He's super nice, helpful and knowledgeable. Hopefully he will be teaching classes I need next term.
Dr. Joshi is awesome. Great lecturer, witty, and makes an effort to build a relationship with his students. He's also very accommodating If you happen to be going through it difficult situation in times of COVID.
Professor Joshi was a joy to have for two semesters. Extremely knowledgeable on all topics pertaining to IPE and IR, and is more than fair with the content presented in class. If you have the chance I highly recommend Professor Joshi to anyone interested in international political economy or IR in general.
I've had 3 courses with Ishan, and I've enjoyed all of them. He is incredibly smart and cares deeply for his students. He'll engage with you like you're a grad student, but will work to ensure everyone gets the attention you deserve. Go to lecture, check in with him at office hours, and you'll surely get an A+
This class is extremely unorganized and unclear. It felt like the lectures, discussions, articles, and textbooks were all talking about different things. But overall the way the class is graded makes it easy to get an A if you try. Professor Joshi is nice and very accessible as well, even though it feels like his lectures drag a bit.
This is my second class with Joshi. Educational, interesting, and enjoyable.. it's nice that if you put the hard work into the class you know you can do well.
Nice prof that gives amazing lectures!
Joshi will help you learn and guide you on what to study to do well in the class. Super nice guy and he's very approachable. Joshi rocks!
Joshi is just brilliant! Extremely helpful and engages well with his students.
Dr. Joshi is an amazing professor and easy to talk to. Learned a lot!
Little to no homework. A ton of reading. Exams are not too bad and there are some extra credit opportunities.
I enjoyed Dr.Joshi's class very much! I studied hard, did well and look forward to taking his classes in the future
Dr. Joshi is a great professor with informative lectures. It was a breath of fresh air compared to other classes.
Worst prof I've had at umich. Did not allow any devices in class, posted lecture capture very late if at all, VERY unresponsive and contradictory to GSIs and students, sometimes insensitive on certain subjects. Only plus of the class was that GSIs were very understanding of the situation and graded leniently to make up for Joshi's disorganization.
I really enjoyed this class as it expanded on my knowledge on the subject. I worked hard, learned a lot and did very well.
Dr. Joshi rocks big time! This was my favorite class this term.
This is my first non-stem class. I worked hard on the beginning, but then I got the half of it. Dr. Joshi was always helpful if I had any questions. Ended up really liking this class.
Prof. Joshi is clearly very knowledgeable, however the class is incredibly disorganized and he is impossible to reach even by email. The exams were easy because he pulls directly from the study guides. Not my favorite class but not terrible.
This was an especially stressful term for me with coursework and at home. So I met with Proessor Joshi and asked him what I needed to do to get a good grade. I let him know that I am interested in learning, but I also want to know clearly what needs to be done to get a good grade. Needless to say, he was incredibly helpful and straightforward.
Professor Joshi is absolutely brilliant and so humble about it. I've taken his class before and would highly recommend him to other students.
Really enjoyed this class with Professor Joshi! His classes fill up quickly for a reason.
I enjoyed taking Dr.Joshi's class. The study guide was helpful to know what to focus on for the exam and the books assigned were a great supplement on any topic I wished to learn more in depth.
Dr. Joshi is an amazing professor. He is nice, approachable, brilliant and direct. He covers a vast spectrum of complex topics, yet he makes the material seem less daunting through his comprehensive teaching style. I would recommend Joshi to anyone looking to expand their knowledge political science related to international relations.
Professor Joshi side a great job teaching this class and compressing the key topics in an organized and easy to understand manner.
Very passionate about the subject, and he even makes sure students are understanding the material. One of my fav profs
he is the best teacher ever. funny, smart, clear, relatable. He actually makes pol sci interesting.
Really enjoyed this class and learned a lot. Would recommend it to anyone. Received. Excellent feedback from Dr. Joshi
Dr. Joshi is highly attentive to student feedback and genuinely wants students to love political science and economics And he cares that students succeed in it.
Such a great professor, who wanted all of us to succeed and enjoy the subject. If you do the study guides and readings you will ace the exams and quizzes. Beware, it is a lot of work so don't do the readings and all of that right before the test, or else you will cram. Such a great class and easy to succeed if you do the work.
Very clear lecturer, really knows his stuff. Pretty easy class, just study consistently and remember the study guides that are given and do your reading on time.are given and do your reading on time.
Dr. Joshi is a really nice guy and wants his students to succeed. He explains things better than the other lectures I had for this course. I would recommend taking this course with him.
Amazing professor! Professor Joshi is very enthusiastic during lecture. Come to class and do the reading and you'll do well.Come to class and do the reading and you'll do well.
My favorite class at Umich! Professor Joshi is incredibly intelligent and witty!
Joshi is easily one of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures are incredibly clear despite being very informative. Be very consistent with studying for that class and you will do just fine!
Professor Joshi is everything I would want from a teacher- brilliant, wise, easy going and a fair grader. So happy to have this class to balance out an otherwise tough schedule.
Professor Joshi always gave me excellent feedback during office hours. He is incredibly talented and is willing to share his knowledge and give you sound advice. I loved this class and can't wait to take another class with him.
Professor Joshi's chef was fantastic!!! Love the combination of intellect and modesty.
He's an inspirational professor and he genuinely enjoys what he teaches. However, if you don't go to class, you will struggle.
I really really appreciated how supportive Professor Joshi was about being sensitive to students' mental health and accommodating for COVID. One of the most caring instructors in terms of leeway to make sure we aren't overstressed by the class.
Highly recommend this prof
Poslci 389 was extremely disorganized, with Joshi often going on tangents and getting upset when people asked questions. He posted review guides just days before the exams, expecting students to memorize pages of material with very short notice. This class made me rethink majoring in polsci.
I chose to Pass/Fail this course earlier in the semester. So my grade here means nothing to me, was just curious of the topic. However, I felt my time was wasted in this course. Unclear lectures, confusing slides, inconsistent communication. Does not offer the tools to succeed. This class should not have been open to all majors.
Enjoyed the class and the reading materials. The professor way very helpful and gave good feedback.
Really enjoyed my second class with Joshi.
Prof Joshi is caring towards his students & wants every single person to do well. He is brilliant, incredibly knowledgeable & passionate about what he teaches & wants all of his students to love his class.
Joshi's is definitely an absent-minded intelligent, however I can't think of a teacher who cared more about his students as human beings. Take any of his classes. You'll learn a lot and do well.
Professor Joshi is a fantastic teacher. His lectures were engaging and he lead thought provoking discussions. His feedback was very helpful and he seemed to really care about helping students. I would recommend him to any prospective students.
Lecturers were very boring in my opinion.
Very thought provoking lectures. Tests are graded fairly. Will take Joshi again.
Highly, highly recommend this professor.
Meandering, all over the place lecturing that often leaves you more confused the longer you listen. Often comes into class unprepared, has wasted multiple classes due to technical difficulties that he refuses to call IT for.
I recommend this class to others.
Professor Joshi is brilliant and his lectures are very informative.
Do not recommend this class to anyone; this professor is rude to students who ask questions and makes you feel embarrassed in front of the whole lecture hall. Does not make any sense in his lectures and when you ask for him to elaborate, he makes it more confusing. 30+ pages of reading every night, I regret taking this class. Nice GSI though.
Joshi is hands down one of the very best professors I have encountered at Mich. He is very experienced and gives clear feedback. Took a couple of classes with him and would recommend his classes to anyone who wants to learn and enjoy the subject.
This class was the highlight of my undergraduate studies with thought provoking lectures and a worry free test taking experience.
Dr. Joshi is so cool!!
I took this class last term and thoroughly enjoyed it! I went to office hours and did my reading which was more than I expected but got a lot of the class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Genuinely the worst professor I've had at UofM. Lectures are boring and don't clarify content, he argues with students in front of the entire class, and he said some VERY problematic things about colonization and slavery. There were midterm questions about topics not addressed in the course...avoid his classes at all costs.
Extremely bright professor in a very interesting course, but you really have to work if you want to keep up. Lectures are pretty much impossible to comprehend because he explains things in a way that only he could understand. Midterm was take home and he wants you to do well, but it definitely is a frustrating experience. Great guy though.
Do not take Professor Joshi. I went into to this class excited to learn about this topic and left wanting to switch my major. Joshi's lectures are extremely boring and hard to comprehend. On top of that, he gets mad at students when they ask questions or are confused on a topic. He also assigns dozens of pages of readings every night. Avoid him.
Every review on here is right, and if there are positive reviews on here, they are most likely written by Joshi himself.
Joshi is a truly nice professor who certainly wants his students to succeed, as demonstrated by his testing accommodations and extra credit opportunities. However his descriptions can be pretty convoluted so understanding lectures without difficulty can require background knowledge or paying deep attention to the readings.
Lectures are incoherent, unrecorded, and lack substantive slides. Joshi proved unable to log into his account multiple times, and just lectured without any visual aids. There's a substantial amount of reading you'll need to do to understand class topics. The tests and quizzes are straight from the study guides, and are not hard if you read.
Syllabus says attendance is not mandatory, it is if you want an A! Joshi's lectures were not recorded but were honestly very interesting and are of interest if you truly enjoy poli sci. Exams were hard, quizzes were not. Rely heavily on the study guides!!! Did not like this class? Change majors because it was a great class.
Professor Joshi is one of the best professors I have had at UM. His lectures are very engaging, he gives very helpful responses to even extensive questions, and the course is structured in such a way that if you understand the material, you will do well in the course without having to stress too much. Highly recommend!
His lectures are disorganized.
Kind of an absent minded professor. A little bit scattered. Really good guy. Thought I was going to get an incomplete but talked to Joshi and he was very helpful.
Boring, confusing, and unclear lectures. Didn't understand anything from lecture until I taught it to myself for the exams (i never missed a lecture) and realized it was actually interesting content but the lectures made it unbearable. GSI saved us. He was never prepared for class and didn't even show up for the final exam. Avoid this professor
Funny smart guy. Never went to class. Crammed last minute and earned a sweet A that boosted my GPA. Would recommend Joshi if you have difficulty getting to class. Just talk to him during OH. He's super understanding.
Easy class. I didn't do all the reading that was assigned but still did well. Really nice professor.
Dude is insanely witty. This is the second class I've had with Joshi. He was a little overwhelmed this term but hey I booster my GPA and went did well. I'm a happy student.
Professor Joshi was an amazing lecturer and was very knowledgeable in terms of the themes that we covered for IPE/IER. The readings are a bit heavy, but they assist in developing your understanding of the intricacies entailed in IPE/IER. The readings are vital for the exams and are crucial for understanding the fundamental principles of IPE.
The most unorganized, unavailable, and inconsiderate professor I have ever had. He's completely disrespectful of student's time and effort. He's hard to follow in lectures and does not post slides. We showed up for our 489 midterm feeling unprepared and he showed up 10 minutes late and then told us we weren't even taking it in class anymore.
bro don't take his class. he will add much more stress to your life than is necessary.
Material was very interesting, but he is such a confusing lecturer. Readings were much more useful than his lectures. Extremely unpredictable with tests and papers (would move due dates randomly) and always forgot to post study guides; that being said, he was not a tough grader so I never felt like I was being penalized by these things.
