If you have to take stats take this guy he has a great way of explaining things to help you understand and he goes at a very slow pace. Previous exams are amazingly helpful for current exams.

Good man, this guy. Lengthy homework assignments, but open book/note exams make this OK. Difficult exams, but really teaches you the material. Very clear lecture style, with multiple ways of explaining everything. Come highly recommended!
We had open book exams, so the exams overall were more difficult but certainly doable if you put in the time beforehand. Professor Fisher gives you all the tools to do well in the class. He explains everything thoroughly and uses excellent healthcare examples to keep you interested.
Open book tests, lengthy assignments.
Packet was helpful. Exams were similar to HW. He put a lot of effort into using relevant examples.
Fischer is a great professor. Of course, his exams are a little hard, but the previous exams help you out quite a bit. The homework load can get lengthy, but practice make perfect so get over it...it could be worse, for example, calc.
Decent guy, but the exams are tough even if they are open book. Don't take this course unless you are prepared to spend alot of time studying and preparing for this class.
He is a great guy and on top of that, one of the most organized teachers i have had. He starts simple and builds up to more complicated concepts. He is extreamly approachable and eager to help. Additionally he has a great sense of humor. Im not very good at math but i thought his tests are doable if you put in the effort.
Do not take Stats 301 with Fischer. I went to 90% of the lectures, and all he does is circle his notes. He does not teach well at all, did not do a single example on chalkboard. If you have to take stats 301 look for a different prof. Very boring, I learned more for my TA that doesn't speak English well. I hade a 3.5+ GPA before this class.
OK, if your looking for some easy formula plug and chug class, then go back to grade school. Dr. Fischer takes a difficult to understand subject and gives it life and practicality for science research. The subject is hard and demanding there is no doubt. You'll have to work and hard, but its made a little easier with his class notes and great class
This is not an easy class and one should come into Dr. Fischer's class thinking so. He is a very friendly professor (no many of them on this campus) that really wants his students to get it. His tests are hard but doable, come well prepared for the exams and don't be afraid to ask questions in class, he really likes it.
I personally did not like the way he taught which was just by circling some stuff in his slides. I basically had to teach myself all of the material along with the help of my roommate. Those that find this class easy are probably those that like this method of teaching or has had previous experience with stats. I would recommend some other prof.
Like someone else said, he only circles parts of his notes. I don't know what the point of going to lecture is, you can just print off the notes online. The tests usally follow his old exams, but the second one we had, did not at all, and was quite frustrating. I would say take someone else, he makes the class harder than it should be.
His class can be very confusing if you're not interested, but if you do your homework and do past exams before midterms it's very possible to do well. He also provides you with copies of lecture notes and is very very helpful if you stop in to see him during office hours.
He was very easy, didn't really have to go to lecture. Study off of his previous exams because his tests are very similar to them.
I really don't understand why everyone thinks this guy is ok...HE IS HORRIBLE!!! HIS HW does not follow his notes at all. Then the HW does not follow the tests at all. The only bad part is, is that he seems like a nice guys, just a really bad teacher. ALSO the HW takes hours to do think 30 problems. I beg of you take someone else!!!
This professor is okay. Statistics really doesn't interest me. He doesn't make it very interesting but I'm not sure if that's possible for anyone to do. Very nice guy, very friendly. Attendence to class is not necessary, as all the notes are given to you. Just do the homework, read the textbook and do practice exams and you'll be fine.
Not a difficult class if you put in effort at the right times. TAs tell you when there will be a quiz and generally what will be on it and Fischer lets you use an 8 X 11 sheet of paper front and back for all exams. He also has tons of previous exams and essentially puts new numbers into the problems to create new ones.
One of the best instructors I have taken a class from.
TAKE STATS WITH ISMOR. Ismor did a fantastic job teaching my class the basics of statistics. He continually tied the course back to what was important, which was that statistics was a way to employ the scientific method. The class was ridiculously easy; I'm not sure how people *didn't* get an A since everything was take-home.
This professor definitely makes the class harder than it should be. I learned more teaching myself from the textbook than from his lectures. The homework from the textbook is do-able, but problems from lecture and the exams are much harder than they should be for an intro stats course. I would recommend taking another professor if can!
I absolutely despised this class. His teaching methods are horrible and the TA's are very arrogant. He treats the work load for this class like its the only class you're taking. I highly recommend finding another professor, this class is terrible.
Class was terrible. Even the TAs didnt know what was going on, as everything was completely disorganized-no syllabus, even. My TA did several homework problems for us regularly, out of pity. Attending lecture will get you nowhere, as he can't explain the material very well-just read through the notes and book yourself,if you can't switch professors
Ismor isn't the greatest professor. I haven't gone to his office hours but he doesn't like to answer questions during class. For exams you get to bring a sheet of paper-make sure you write out a bunch of sample problems, those exams are HARD and there's not enough time. Homework takes forever too-don't put it off until the last minute.
Lecture notes are printed into a booklet. I did not attend one single lecture but got a B in the class. Homework is extremely long and tests are difficult but he offers many exam practice problems and allows you to use one sheet of paper so if you put time into writing practice problems on your sheet, you should do fine.
Prof Fischer is the most difficult professor I've ever had, he has a good heart and seems like a good person, but you better be prepared for TONS of homework and frustration. his exam questions are the hardest questions I've ever encountered, and you won't know how to do them no matter how much you study his exam study guides.
One of the best professors I've had thus far. Ismor is a sweet man who is passionate about what he teaches. The information is difficult but if you actually pay attention to his lectures, you truly learn the material. Take advantage of the cheat sheets and practice exam problems- he wants you to do well so take the time to study and it will pay off
I have no idea why all of these posts are bad. He's a great professor and his lecture notes and lectures are pretty clear. he goes over everything more than once each lecture so that the students really understand it.
He genuinely wants his students to learn. His lecture captures are also great for review. Makes the material seem relevant.
Ismor is a good professor. He seems like he does genuinely want you to do well in the class. Sends out a lot of emails to help you with various problems and topics being discussed, and will reply to emails almost instantly if you have questions. He does assign a lot of hw but it makes you keep up with the material, which can be good. Overall solid.
Dr. Fischer seems like a good guy who wants you to do well in his class, but I think he forgets that this is an intro course and that most of us have other majors that require a lot of work. His homework assignments are ridiculously large, and lecture problems are very frustrating. Exam questions are also ridiculous for an intro course. Overall: C-
Ridiculous course, Aced stats twice before this course. Missing a key stats table, couldn't decide on textbook to start semester (I'm out $150) and generally terrible teaching. Most of the lecture notes were incomprehensible. Easily the worst taught class I have ever had in my schooling.
Gives out a lot of homework but it helps you understand the material. Lecture notes are confusing but the new powerpoint slides he is working on are much better. Exams were fair even though many people struggled with them. He really likes to make students interpret the results and not just use the formula to get a number.
Assigns a lot of homework but it is useful in understanding the material. Lecture notes not extremely clear, power points for first part of class were very helpful. No syllabus, would tell us 1-2 weeks before an exam or homework was due. Exam 1 & final were fair, exam 2 was nothing like his practice questions. DID NOT SUBMIT GRADES ON TIME!
Professor Fischer is a great guy, and if you take any time to go to his office hours of send him and email, he is extremely accommodating and helpful. The course material can be challenging at times, but if you do the practice exam problems you will do fine on the tests. The final was a piece of cake.
Helpful teacher and vey accommodating. His tests are very similar to the practice tests he sends out before the exams.
Actually the worst professor I've ever had. The material he covers is way above intro statistics and his teaching style (especially his self-made "LECTURE NOTES" book with problems) is incomprehensible. Take another professor. The course itself is fine, just not with him.
Assigns a lot of hw. Lecture note questions are extremely hard. the class seems way to advanced for an into level class. He's a nice guy, but this class is just to much to handle for being "into" level.
Teaches everything in lecture in the most confusing way possible and doesn't prepare you well for the exams. A LOT of hw!! Avoid if possible!
Pretty tough course, if you study hard it won't be a problem. However, don't expect to have much of a life. This guy lives, breathes, and eats stats. and you will too.
Very funny and easy-going. Generous curve, and he gives a lot of partial credit on tests. Each homework assignment takes about 5 hours to complete, but you have 1 or 2 weeks to do it, so people who say it was too much obviously did not portion their time well. Lecture problems are challenging, but very helpful for understanding the material.
Nice enough guy, but difficult for a low-level class. For a class not in my field, the amount of work given seems like it WAS my major. Lecture notes problems are way too time consuming. Avoid if you're not math-oriented. Felt a sudden quantum leap in difficulty out of nowhere. Attend discussion if you can. Homework was the main issue, though.
Great course. I'm still using his course guide years later.
Professor Fischer is fantastic! He explains the material well, provides you with ALL things necessary to succeed (if you're willing to work), is hilarious and LOVES what he does. Definitely keeping his "Lecture Notes" textbook indefinitely. Invaluable information is in it!Thought I'd hate Biostats-ended up secretly liking it. Tough, but great class!
Great website that helps reinforce lectures. Lots of homework but it really helps learn the material. Everything is open note.
Fischer is probably one of the better stats professors you can find. If stats is required for you major, try to take him. He tries to make the material as easy to understand as possible. The homework is time consuming, but not super hard. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS STUDY THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS FOR EXAMS. Plus you get a cheat sheet. Recommend him.
His lectures are B.O.R.I.N.G. and not very helpful. I ended up mostly teaching myself out of the book. HW's are long, but not difficult. I'm normally an A student, but I failed the first exam; I left 2 pages blank, but the others I finished well within the time limit and received A's on. Maybe a fluke, but beware of that first exam!!!
Being a nursing major math is not my strong suit. This class was difficult even after going to lecture I found myself teaching every bit of material. The homework is long and 99% of it does not pertain to the tests. He has practice questions up for each test that you should just repeat many times. The tests are hard to finish.
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! DO NOT take this class. Extremely long homework assignments that take hours on end. Also, the tests are very hard and you cannot finish them in the time you are given. By far the worst class I've ever taken. I learned nothing.. avoid if possible. You will regret it if you take this class.
A very fair professor. He is a good lecturer, and the tests really aren't bad. He gives past exams which are extremely helpful. Nice guy too.
Prof. Fischer genuinely wants his students to come out of his class with a solid understanding of stats. He does tend to elaborate on the material, but that makes it all the more helpful to understand it (it isn't always about plug and chug math!). Homework takes up a pretty significant amount of time. That said, start early! He's great overall tho
Ismor uses powerpoint to teach class. He also goes off lecture notes which you do not need to buy because he puts the PDFs online. The homework is very lengthy and the lecture notes homework is kind of hard. He gives 8 practice exams which are very similar to the ones given in class so do them and he lets you bring a sheet of notes to each exam
This class was definitely more challenging than most classes I have taken at UW especially considering math is an area I typically struggle in. It requires a great deal of dedication and work, but the professor is fair, considerate and more than willing to help if you ask for it. It is not easy to get a good grade but definitely not impossible.
This is the worst professor to take for Stats 301. For an introductory Stats course, WAY too hard. Gives past exams for study guides but exams are still very difficult. TA was no help. No curve. Homework assignments VERY long.
Horrible class. Math has never been my strong point, and for an introductory course, it was entirely too difficult. TAs were useless. I did incredibly well on the assignments, but that won't help at all. Professor promised curve, did not give one (and the average grade in the class definitely called for a curve).
This class is not hard. He makes it crystal clear what is going to be on the exam. Going to lecture is pointless because you can easily learn everything from the book, and are allowed full sheets of paper for the exams. Make sure to do all of the practice exams and you're golden. Statistics isn't hard, it's just extremely extremely boring.
Recommended for those who are going to major in Statistics to take it with Professor Fischer. Exams are not hard if you do the practices exams and understand them. Quiz is the most annoying part in this class that the average score of the whole class is about 6/10. A lot of homework but it won't be a problem if you start earlier.
Fischer reads right off his powerpoint slides for lecture so it's extremely boring. The exams aren't too hard if you DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS. Homework takes forever and the quizzes are time consuming but if you put in the time you'll get a good grade.
Not recommended if you are not a MathStats major. Fischer thinks this is a 500 level course for those with a strong background. Too hard for an introductory course! Homework problems in lecture packet do not help at all for exams. Homework problems from text help somewhat. Exams are too long for the time given to take them. Get different professor
The subject Statistic itself might seem not that attracting to many people, but Ismor is a very good professor to make such a course clear and interesting. He is very helpful and give useful problem sets.
I really liked that he didn't focus on computer assignments, as other professors do. The exams are exactly like the practice exams (there are at least 6 for each unit). Although he gives a lot of homework, it is very useful to your understanding of the course-start it early! He is also very understanding if you go to him. Amazing professor.
Fischer is amazing at answering his emails. He wants you to understand the material and will make himself available should you need extra help. The material is presented in a straightforward manner and he tries to tie in humor now and then (but how humorous can statistics really be?). The test are absolutely fair, and he sets you up for success.
Professor Fischer is great!!! As an international student, it's easy to understand his lecture. He is logic and speak clearly. Although I don't have interests on statistic, I find it's useful.
As a history major I found this class extremely difficult. I did not have a background in stats before this class and it is certainly not geared for students who want a general stats course. The homework was difficult and I recommend going to the stats lab for help. Professor Fischer is smart but does not relate well to those who need help.
His tests test your ability to make a good cheat sheet.
Ismor Fischer was honestly one of the best professors I've had at UW. I had no experience in stats and was terrified for the class but ended up doing much, much better than expected. Ismor gave great examples in lecture and practice exams were extremely representative of exams. Homework can be tough, but I HIGHLY recommend taking stats with him.
Very good teacher and if your work hard you can do well
He's a good professor who wants his students to succeed. His lectures directly translate to the exams, practice problems are helpful. He gives you 8 practice exams for each of the exams we take in class, if you figure out how to do some of those you'll be fine on the exams.
As a business student, I found the class to be difficult at first. He goes really in depth into science aspects of statistics rather than the usual math. His lectures are boring. I did very poorly on the first exam but did above average on the rest. He does not curve and is a bit unorganized. Take at your own risk.
He was amazingly helpful. He was always available for questions and was always willing to help me work through a problem. He really cares about his students.
He's a decent professor that really does care about his students. I felt sometimes as if homework was much harder than what we were doing in class, but if you take the time to talk to him he will really help you out. Easy to understand too.
Ismor has a good sense of humor, though his jokes are often terrible. Goes through material in lecture very slowly, so you could skip a week and catch up on the stuff you missed very quickly from his posted lecture slides and notes. Homework is long, but exams are pretty easy.
Lectures are the clearest I've seen at UW. For those who are complaining. Haha trust me it gets wayyyy harder than this course.
Great Professor. His power points are exhaustive and cover all topics in depth with great clarity, and his explanations given in lecture complement them very well. Tests are fair. This is not an easy class, but he makes it very doable. He's a nice guy and pretty humorous, albeit corny, during class. Would definitely recommend taking Ismor.
This guy is a mess. The lectures are so boring because he goes through material so slowly. The first 20 min of this power lecture are a review from the previous class. Half the people don't come. He changed our last hw assignment 3 times, and the final exam date twice all within a week. Took him a week and a half to respond to my email. Cancels OH
Ismor is a rockstar.
Professor Ismor is very great at giving clear lectures that you will 100% understand. He is available for help if you seek it. His only downside is that he is disorganized, but I would take that all day because he is simply good at making you understand the required material. He gives you 9 practice exams to practice for, similar to the exam!
Really great lecturer and a wonderful guy to talk to. He was super unorganized/slow to grade but I think that might have been because this was his first time teaching 240 and it was during the summer. He was also very fair when unpredictable circumstances came up, and tries to be reasonable about it. Not easy but doable (though I didn't do well ):
Professor was completely unprepared to teach class and the students suffered for it. Cut class short every single session (until issue was raised to department). Glossed over or skipped entirely the topics for which CS students are required to take the class. Know of multiple students that dropped knowing they would still have to pay for class.
Ismor likes to spread random math jokes throughout his lectures which keeps it entertaining. However, all of his slides are posted so attendance in lecture doesn't help much. His slides can be very overwhelming in colors and fonts, graphs etc. but it is helpful once you're home and trying to study. Exams are very straightforward and predictable.
Ismor Fischer was a great professor. He is outstanding at teaching the material and does not give too much work. Would recommend for sure.
The best professor to teach stats classes. Before taking stat312 hated statistics, but 312 was one of the most interesting classes for me.
I'll start by saying that I'm not a fan of statistics. Never have been, doubt I'll ever be. If I do ever get good at/become interested in stats, it will not because of Ismor. His lectures were very dry, and moved SO SLOWLY. I was not a fan of his testing style, but as much as I want to tear into him, he does know his stuff, and may be good for you.
Ismor's lectures were posted online, so going to his lecture is not mandatory. I found them boring, but he does a good job of slowly explaining concepts. His website is confusing at first to navigate, but everything is explained on it. I put this course on the back burner cause of my other classes and did well in it. Overall not too bad.
Overall, the class was not very difficult. Homework is important to do because it is worth 30% of your overall grade, which I liked because the homework is easy. The lectures are really boring, but, then again, I'm not sure how a statistics class like this can be fun. One of the only things that annoyed me about this class was how unorganized it is
I took the STAT311 for summer 2018 and Dr. Fischer elaborated it in an amazing way. The way the slices are designed is interactive and amazing. He is really good at explaining and helpful at his office hour. He is a great professor and if you have a chance, take his class.
I have taken two stat classes with Ismor and I think he is a solid professor. His lectures are slow but he takes the time to make sure each student understands the material. He provides old exams which are super helpful to practice for midterms/final. Recommend.
Easy class. Professor Ismor is good at explaining stuffs. He sometimes was late for class so the last few lectures were very rushed.
Any professor who has a disclaimer on their Rate My Professor should not be trusted. Possibly the cruelest, most rude instructor ever. Post first exam, he essentially told half of the class to drop. Hasn't taught differential equations since the 80's and is awful at teaching it. DO NOT TAKE MATH WITH HIM.
Possibly the worst math class I have taken on campus. Unclear lectures, syllabus was incomplete, and overall structure of the course was really unorganized. Maybe he is a better stats professor than math professor, but I don't feel prepared for taking a higher level differential equations class after taking Math 319 with this professor.
There was a large disconnect between the material on lectures and homework and exams.
The truth. I do not feel like he fully covered what a differential equations class should encompass, which was frustrating. I did well in his class, so I am not lashing out at him because I am a "bitter student." This is just my honest opinion. I know a lot of people read these, so I am just providing insight from a non-biased perspective.
This course has no discussion section, so lecture time is very important. Ismor did a great job of organizing the material into very helpful slides that made a lot of sense when he presented them. The first exam was incredibly difficult (59% average) and the following two were significantly easier (over 80% ave). He was always very accommodating.
A good guy. Actually made math pretty fun. Cared enough about students to do extra review with us and move test dates. Doesn't sell you a ridiculously expensive textbook that he wrote himself (he sells them from the university copy shop for cheap). DOESN'T SUFFER FOOLS.
His website is antiquated and he refuses to use canvas, making it difficult to find where dates, course resources, and most importantly exam dates. He doesn't take constructive criticism well and is quick to anger -- to the extent of threatening his students' academic and professional futures.
If you haven't already seen this guy's email to one of his students, look it up. There is no excuse for any sort of that behavior in academia.
Chews students out and then wonders why everyone thinks hes a 8D. What a clown. Good going, professor.
Has an antiquated website, I love it though. Just because it is old is no reason to hate it, it gets everything done and is often easier to use than canvas
He is not that bad and he apologizes. He teaches the class well though his website is bad. I think overall he is enthusiastic in teaching.
I took his Math 319 class last semester, and honestly it was pretty enjoyable. Its certainly not the hardest class youll take, and if you can handle his occasional seeming unintentional harshness its a solid class.
Boring and rude. I have never had a teacher as unapproachable and rude
Ismor is a good professor, even though he may make a few gaffes. Lecture goes by quite slowly and small things are often repeated for a lecture or two. But, if you can pay attention and learn the material you will do fine. The only thing to beware of is a tough test if he deems a previous test to be too difficult.
First and foremost, Ismor does not suffer fools. I went to lecture a lot at the start of the semester, but Ismor took so long to cover content that I stopped going about 1/4 of the way into the class. I would recommend simply looking at the textbook and his lecture notes rather than going to lecture. Overall, Ismor covers content far too slowly.
Professor was very straightforward and made it clear that he was available to help students. The class was fairly easy but his notes were very clear and made the material easy to understand.
Prof. Fischer handled the transition to online courses very well. He made himself very accessible, and if you emailed him for help (which he encouraged), he gave very good feedback and resources to learn more. Only qualm is you're graded by only a few things so any mistake you make will affect your grade more than it would in another class.
The man isn't helpful in his emails, there were no office hours, there was one ta who graded everything, the professor reused his old lecture videos from last year so halfway through October he just stopped having to work. Ismor Fischer does not care about his students at all and I learned nothing from his lectures or the class overall.
Pretty laidback class, if taken online. The tests are 'takehome' so you have a week or so to work on them. All the lectures are prerecorded so you can watch them at your leisure, and Ismor is very clear in all of them. Honestly out of any class I took this semester his was the best organized (everything switched to online for me).
Prof Fischer is an old school professor: he gives you the information and tools, and the rest is up to you. Don't expect easy homework or exams, he definitely makes you work for it. For Fall 2020, our exams were take home and we were allowed to collaborate, which made things nice. Definitely take this class seriously.
Solid prof. Clear requirements, very organized class.
Fair amount of workload. Clear grading.
