A very good teacher in my opinion. He lectures a lot in class, he's very friendly and seems to have a passion for math He assigns hw but only two problems is required to do for each section, so the rest is optional. He gives partial credit for things both test and hw Exams are 90% homework (includes optional or required problems) 10% made from him
the best part of him is his lectures
He let the whole class do extra credit for their tests when most of the class failed. Wants people to figure things out by themselves so he won't always explain what to do step by step, but tells you why. I think that's good because you wont always have someone telling you everything in real life, and math is supposed to teach logic.
His class was great! I had never been good at math, but he explained it well. The only thing I did not like was that he would not answer some questions clearly. He wants you to REALLY think about it before explaining it. He does drop the lowest quiz scores though which helped. Overall, I would recommend him.
This class was a little harder than I had expected. The tests given were all hand written and challenging. If you work/study really hard on everything taught in class you'll be fine.
Professor Castro is the absolute best! I am not kidding! The way he explains math will make you understand everything being taught perfectly. He is patient and doesn't get irritated with his students. I took his 6 week winter course and passed with a B. No other math professor will teach 150 of any other math class better than him. Go Castro! :)
His teaching skills are amazing. He did put a lot of effort on his job. He will always teach students patiently and make sure that everyone understands the class. I enjoy his class pretty much just because i did learned a lot of methods from him.
Mr. Castro is a very good professor. Math was not my strength, but after taking this class it has changed my mind. I really enjoyed the class and I received a B. I only missed once. If you miss to many days you will get behind in class.
Castro is the best math prof i've came across. He wants all his students to pass & makes sure they learn. He gives a project, 5 tests ,& a final but drops the lowest test. He's a great prof, he knows what he's teaching. Study hard & ask questions and you'll be fine. He's great, you won't leave class w/o learning something new which is rare to find.
He is very caring and welcoming when you ask for help in class or office. He takes his time to explain in detail till you understand when you get his help in his office because he doesn't need to rush thru the problems due to long office hours. Majority of the time, his office is packed because he is nice and explains to student level.
Homework is not too bad, but he wants his students to understand the work. Study, Study, Study, do the homework, and ask questions. Overall, he is a good professor
Prof. Castro is THE BEST math professor at PCC. I had him for Math 150 and Stats 50. If you are looking for an easy A, do not take his class. However, out of all the professors I had at PCC, he is the one who prepared me the most for UCLA. Class Breakdown: 5 Exams. No study guides. No extra credit. Gives partial credit.
The tempo of the class is bad. He was absent for several classes and each tests is 8/9 pages long. Towards the end of the semester, he had no time to properly teach the most important and hard to grasp part of the class. He made many mistakes in lectures and seems like not really knowing his stuff. He's not good at explaining the concepts.
I took his class during winter intercession last year. The homework took me all night to do. I was exhausted from waking up early everyday but luckily we get a break each hour. With Castro, he's a funny and nice guy. He's approachable to get help with. There's a lot of work and some material was hard but I managed.
Very good professor, I like his class very much!
rushed the last chapter and didnt even cover the two sections. lots of homework and the test takes up the whole single class time
Castro is a real gem. I took him for math3/math 8 math path and he made me love math! His lectures are amazing and he goes out of his way to explain everything. The class itself is challenging but that's expected, however if you study an A is definitely possible.
Castro is not very knowledgable about what he is teaching and does not keep up with putting grades in. I went into the final not knowing what grade I had because he hadn't put grades in since September. He cancelled so many classes and when anyone would ask a question he was not willing to help. He doesn't show up on test days and rushes lectures.
Don't take him if you're not willing to learn and you won't get an easy A. He's really passionate about math and is always willing to help you out if you have any questions. As long as you pay attention in class and complete all your assignments you should be fine. I would definitely recommend taking his class!
He is not the best teacher to have when it comes to Math 03. He does not care about his students and he rarely puts in grades. He gives out a lot of homework and if you do not do it, he will call you out in class singling you out. I would not recommend this teacher to anyone.
Nice guy and very passionate about math but he teaches very fast. If you are slow and bad at math like me, please don't take him. He does not give study guides and there is little to no opportunities for extra credit. He does drop the lowest test and quiz but that is it. Don't get fooled by his rating on here like I did.
Take another professor. Terrible teacher, doesnt give study guides for any exams or final and gives VERY little to no extra credit. The only plus side is he drops 1/4 exams not including the final.
I took this class in the spring 2018. He is very nice, and lectures are very clear. Tests can be a little hard, but do your homework and you will be fine. Definitely one of the best math professors I've ever had.
He's a very nice guy, but his lectures are pretty fast and can be difficult to make that information stick. Every week, there would be either a quiz or an exam and if you have a hard time with test taking, things are going to feel stressful. If you know you struggle with math, I do not recommend taking him.
Very down to earth & knowledgeable but he is tough! You will learn a lot, but this class is very challenging. Some problems on the exams are straightforward from the notes, but sometimes he puts harder problems that require a lot of critical thinking and previous math knowledge. Overall he is a fair grader and drops lowest exam and quiz!!!
Lots of homework and if you skip classyou wont pass
If you struggle with math i don't recommend taking him. But, he is a great professor to take if you plan on going further with your mathematics.
Many homework and no extra creditsit only appeared in exam Exam was very hard and he asked us to write the process of how to calculating Many questions on exams he did not mention during class There were a lot of Homework to do everyday
He gave me FMy all application were declined because of himHorrible professorUnclear teaching Unclear study guide before examsDo Not take his class
he just came to class to do his lecturesnot a good professor at all. His class was so quick and if you ask him questionhe did not answer very clear. He needs to learn how to be a professional professor
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! I'm telling you if you don't want a stressful semester, DO NOT TAKE HIM!! He rushes his lectures, he is not considerate of students at all. NO STUDY GUIDES AT ALL. He assigns a bunch of hw and it's graded on correctness. HW WAS A PAIN BC IT WAS ONLINE MATH HW TOO. Trust me, you will not like him nor enjoy his class. SAVE YOURSELF
He is great at explaining new material and shows problems step by step. He is very nice and always willing to answer any student's question.
If you want to passtrust metake another one He doesnt mention cheat sheet and you must complete those heavy difficult questions during class time No ec offered except examWhy pcc hire himHe needs to learn how to be a professor
He is a professor who is passionate about math. I really disliked the aleks online homework system, very frustrating and tedious. His lectures were good but can get a bit long, though it is a ton of material to cover. Questions on tests can get tricky, but he teaches most of the stuff he tests on. Review the notes and book a few times beforehand.
His lectures were clear and concise without giving you a bunch of stuff you don't need to know. His handwriting is very legible. If you have a question, he'll work through it with you over and over until you get it.
He is a very solid professor, you can learn a lot from him. He gives good examples in lectures and tells you what is gonna be on the test, almost no surprises. If you attend his lecture and do all the homework, I think you will do great.
He is very clear in his lectures and gives examples. Will also answer your questions outside or during class, graded mainly on tests and finals. Hated the ALEKS homework which you had to pay for and was frustrating/annoying. When you get one question wrong it makes you start over, you have to get 3 in a row to finish the topic. Very time consuming
This professor is insanely difficult. His lectures are very heavy. Calculus 5B is known to be extremely hard. However, I've never felt more unprepared in my life for a test. His questions are difficult! we are given 2 hours to do the exam and I can never finish on time.
Professor Castro isnt the guy to take if youre not willing to put 100% into this course. This professor has a passion for the subject that is infectious. He gives great examples in lecture and is very clear about his expectations for you as a student. Definitely take this class, you will learn a lot.
Math is a difficult subject for me, and I had to take Math 05A almost three times, however taking his class during a winter session, I surprisingly passed with an A. His course is challenging because of Calculus, but he is a fantastic teacher who makes you passionate about math even if you dislike it.
WIN21 Graded assignments/tests super late so give yourself cushion. Tests and final was take home so no proctoring. There was ALOT of homework, spent most of my time doing homework than actual studying. Great lectures, concise enough to where you'll understand. Take him if you want to get 5C out of the way but also still learn something. Easy A
Solid math instructor that loves to teach! Very easy to approach and won't make you feel bad for not knowing/understanding. Explains things in an easy to understand way. Its math, its not easy, but he tries. 100/10 will take again.
You can tell he loves to teach! Very patient with his students.
Lots of homework. Tests were easy and if you watched the lectures and paid attention to the homework they shouldn't be that hard. Lectures were pre recorded but about 40 mins+ each time. On top of watching lectures, there's an optional (but most people go) lecture that runs an hour long. Be prepared to sit through a lot of lectures, but very clear.
Mistakes in quizzes. Unresponsive to e-mails. Nothing gets graded - which is ironic considering draconian weighting on homework and "participation." Makes you feel like you're not even taking a class. Please grade your students and respond to their messages.
He is the best teacher I have ever seen. You just need to turn in your homework and you get full credits.
Not responding to emails, simply using pre-recorded videos
Legit takes forever to grade. Completely unresponsive to emails and calls. Seriously do no take this course. Months after course has ended, still no grade. Homework is super tedious and time consuming. Lectures were videos so good luck if you are confused.
Good professor. Cares about his students and is passionate about teaching. He answers every question and gives one on one help in office hours. However, his tests can sometimes be harder than what he teaches. Also, he took a very long time to grade our last two exams, I'm talking about months. Teaching isn't the best.
Note that there's no easy math class, you have to work to pass: Pros: - good at explaining - passionate - hilarious - caring - give partial credits on exams Cons: - test is much harder than practices but doable if review bold questions of hw carefully. - lots of hw - not accessible outside of class/office hours.
Never answers emails. He is friendly.
Professor Castro is an easy grader for HW. His tests are harder than HW questions given for practice. He is a super friendly professor, and answers any question that you may have in class. CON: Not accessible through canvas emails or any form of contact outside office hours. If you have any type of question, go to his office hours.
There is not extra credit, no cheat sheet during tests(no flash card or anything related), what you go over in class will NOT be on the exam, expect something 2-3 times as hard on the exam. You will not get by just by doing all the assignments and asking questions, you will need to go to outside sources as well, good person.
He is a good lecturer and grades homework easily just for completion, but his tests are so so much harder than lectures or homework. No extra credit, no curve, no rounding up, no cheat sheets, and grades test very strict. Barely responds to emails. Only take this class if you LOVE math as much as he does.
He gives student Lots of homework and his lecture is boring.
Hardest professor I have ever taken. So much homework. Unorganized assignments. Tests have questions harder than the homework. Hard to understand lectures.
Professor Castro is not that bad of a professor, he's actually caring! However, he should probably do a better job at explaining some things, rather than assume everyone knows what he's talking about.
Please don't take this professor, he does not communicate very well with his students and does not respond to emails. His exams are super difficult and tedious and you are sometimes unable to even complete the exam before time runs out.
Chill class. Pre-recorded lectures are straightforward and clearly spoken. There will be one to three sections of homework due at the end of each week. Never got my emails answered. Visit his office hour is the only way. Other than that he is actually very nice and willing to help the students. Very lenient about late work when you reach out.
There were VERY few times where I thought he did well explaining, the rest of the times just felt like he expected us to read his mind. If you're someone who likes to get their grade on tests back fast, don't become a student in his class.
His homework is really long and annoying, his tests are super hard with material that he may not have completely covered in class, and he doesn't respond to emails. The positives are that you get participation credit for just showing up and that he is passionate about the subject, but I wouldn't recommend taking him.
Tests can be far more difficult than the lecture and homework problems. Quite a lenient grader if you show your work and your general approach is correct even if your answer is wrong. Lectures can become somewhat robotic. Homework can take whole days to complete. Your lowest test score will be dropped.
Pros: - online course - video lectures are pretty good Cons: - grades are a little late - tests are significantly more difficult than hw, but similar-ish in difficulty to lecture examples He responds to emails if you spam or write a meaningful question.
Prof Castro was good. He graded 15% hw 10 discussions 15 quizzes 35 exams 25 final. There is lots of hw but discussions and quizzes stopped on week 4 (6 week course). He promised extra credit 1 quiz a week and 1 discussion a week, but no EC was offered. He grades tests lightly, but there is limited time so work fast. Lectures were good. Funny guy.
Extremely chill calc 3 class. Fully online lectures, HW, quizzes, exams. Much easier than most 4-year university calc 3 courses. Lectures are decent, but the prof does not grade fast or respond to emails. Lots of annoying HW but can be easily searched if needed. Overall, not a great prof, but very easy course for material of this level.
Video lectures are helpful and easy to understand. There is a lot of homework and the class moves at a fast pace. Tests are not difficult (similar difficulty to homework) and he is a fair grader (gives a lot of partial credit). Just make sure to manage your time well. He does not respond to emails and grades really late, but still is an easy prof.
he did not adhere to the syllabus and did not respond to emails. After my classmates and I requested that he follow the syllabus, he changed it. Additionally, although our exams on Crowdmark are supposed to be anonymous to grader, but he forced us to write our names on the papers before uploading them.
The content of his lectures that captivated the masses but the manner in which he delivered them. Professor Castro is a master storyteller, seamlessly blending facts with anecdotes, making the subject matter come alive. A lesson in his class transforms into a gripping narrative.
Professor Castro is a great lecturer and I did learn a lot from him, but, his tests were so different from the homework and were so difficult I recommend you take anyone else. If you do not have a great Algebra II or Trig background you will not pass the class.
Im a UCLA student. I took his class at PCC since it was cheaper and it transfers to my school. Very easy. Much easier than the professors at UCLA. I ended with a 96% on his class with not much effort. your Calc BC needs to be strong.
This was one of the worst professors I taken at pcc with over 90 credit. He gave up the class during the last 5 weeks. All of the material was on youtube and he DOES NOT RESPOND TO EMAIL. He does not give any extra credit and will deduct point on the smallest of things. His lecture and homework are completely different from his quiz and exams.
Math in general has never really been my strong suit, but Professor Castro is a wonderful professor who truly cares about his students. I owe my B in Stats, let alone a passing grade, to him. The tests are very straightforward and he makes concepts easy to understand. He's not a harsh grader and he gives points if you show your work. Take notes!
Easy A tbh
I am taking his 6-week intersession course and can confidently say that his class is not set up for you to succeed. His lectures do not go into detail enough to assist you when doing the homework. His test are very large and cover entire sections, will also deduct points for even the most minor mistakes. Would not recommend taking this professor.
If you are not advanced at math, DO NOT TAKE CASTRO. I took it for my first semester at PCC and struggled heavily. He would use concepts in tests that he did not teach or were from a random lesson that was taught in either Algebra II or precalc. If you excel at math, you will succeed, if you are just average do not take him please.
Class has low workload, just Webassign hw, few quizzes, and the tests which are straightforward. Lectures are essentially copy-pasted from the textbook. Issue is, he waited until the class already ended to upload test grades which screwed a lot of people over me included. Can't recommend the class unless you already know the material beforehand
You can do hw, classwork. you won't feel prepared for exams. they are difficult
Tons of useless hw. Worth if you want to learn. Care about grade? Take someone else.
If taking in winter, don't take any other class! Lecture, quiz, & exam-heavy. No late HW, makeup quizzes and exams, or curve. Lowest exam score dropped. Grades generously on HW & fairly on quizzes & exams. Contrary to other reviews, I believe the HW reflects the test questions which are fair. Professor is cheerful yet serious and speaks clearly.
Professor is not bad as many people say, make sure to stay focused and pay attention and you'll be fine. Good teacher, heavy homework but homework prepares you for the test which are sometimes difficult. The final was easier than most, I highly recommend Mr. Castro as long as you're willing to commit to understanding the topics.
Honestly the class is hard from it just being stats but if you are the type of student to review and study all materials when you get back home then you'll do fine. You have to put your part in learning this on your own time. He teaches with an ipad and writes out his lessons like khan academy. Expect quizzes every week. 3 Exams.
Be cautious about reviews. A.I Generated or he leaves himself reviews. Not accurate. You can ask other students in person or take the risk by taking his class. Reviews can easily be duped. He isn't easy. Good professor, passiionate, but exams are difficult. Not prepared for hw.
Prof doesn't bother to grade or answer messages, there are better professors at PCC take those instead
makes this class harder than it seems to. Take him if you are insanely confident with your algebra and trig skills. He makes the most out of his math class and tests you on your pre-req materials rather than actual calc material itself.
Trust me, don't take his class, I think he is the toughest grader in all PCC, I had learned carefully but he really likes to pick up and subtract some point from very little details and that end up to the point that I never get an A or B for each test. The mean value for every test is about 48/100.
Do not expect to hear from him outside of class and office hours, he is a busy man, and I never got an email reply throughout the semester. In spite of that, he does a lot for students. Mr. Castro lowkey portrays himself as a tough professor by saying he doesn't curve things or give extra credit. But he always looking for ways to help students.
I took Professor Castro for Math 055 an he is one of the best Professors at PCC. Math is a course that involves a lot of time and commitment. These courses are not easy. So it only makes sense that Professor Castro assigns a good amount of homework to be well prepared for his exams. Amazing Professor and I would definitely take him again.
Professor is very articulate in math. He is easy to understand and eager to answer questions. He does assign a lot of homework problems but a few hard ones from the textbook often do not make it on the tests. If you are looking to understand math and are a stem major his class is great.
He is amazing at teaching the subject\ He always includes a question that he's never taught how to do on his tests Homework is easy, he assigns a decent amount, but not too much and you only need to finish 75% of it for full points, but try to do it all anyways Take him if you want a good understanding of the subject, don't if you want an easy A
It is definitely possible to get an A in his class if you have a good/somewhat understanding of Calculus. I wouldn't recommend taking his winter course if you haven't taken Calculus. For me, the biggest downside is the amount of homework he assigns. You only need to do 75% of it, but still...75% of it is a lot. Do not procrastinate on homework.
Wasn't hard to get a free version of the textbook. There is a lot of homework but it really does help you prep for exams which make up the bulk of your grade. To do well you need a strong understanding of Math 5B. This is not an easy A class you do need to put the work in.
Prof Castro is a very nice teacher, but if you don't like doing lots of homework, he might not be for you. Lectures are very clear and definitely shouldn't be skipped if you want to pass. Tests can be challenging, but reviewing homework will greatly help you go over all of the concepts on the test.
He's not for everyone and will challenge you if you're not solid on fundamentals from previous maths, but he cares about everyone's understanding of the material, so don't be afraid to ask "stupid" questions during his lectures. Take good notes and reserve time for lots of HW problems. He drops the lowest test score and two lowest quiz scores.
Just horrible. Do not recommend.
Professor Castro is a very passionate and well organized teacher. He was able to teach complex topics effortlessly and constantly kept me engaged. He graded tests in about a week on average. Tests make up a large portion of one's grade, but there is a dropped test and extra credit opportunity for the final. Likely my favorite math teacher in years.
