Very nice guy. Has an accent, but its understandable. Trys to help you the best he can plus some. He always gives 100%
Biggest plus; homework can be handed in late!
The best math teacher I have had yet. He definitely knows his stuff. I would recommend him to anyone who wants a challenge but will learn a lot at the same time.
Very good teacher, full of helpful analogies. Once you get around the accent, which isnt too hard, he teaches very well!
He may know his material but he does not know how to explain it well to those who do not understand the first time around. He totally only focused on one girl who already knew everything while the rest of us were lost. And he doesn't answer e-mails.
This teacher was very nice with excepting late work, but i had trouble understanding him. I couldn't get around that accent. I probably got a C in that class. :/
Very Good teacher. Very Fair, wants to help all his students, accepts late work, and is overall a very nice guy. He does have trouble communicating with students' questions, though.
Best math professor at CCSU. I had no problem with his accent. If you wanna learn math then Ivan is your man. He really cares about students that put effort into his classes.
The only con- answering questions ALL the time during class takes away from lecture time, and only being graded on tests is a little stressful.
Awesome teacher...the best that I have had at central! It is pretty obvious what will be on his tests!
his tests are duplicates of his take home exams..if you work in groups for the take homes you'll be fine
Great teacher, had two semesters in a row. Definately recommend him. Very helpful explanations, and always willing to help students
Very hard to understand, does not teach well at all.
He knows his stuff but can't explain it to his class. The take homes are just like his tests however he goes over the take home the day of the test! Not a good teacher.
Has an accent but I had absolutely no problems understanding him. Great teacher, very friendly, willing to work with you. Makes it known what will be on the exams, you just need to study! Wish I could take him again.
Gotchev is awesome. he's my advisor as well as professor & he is by far the 1st math professor that i've actually looked forward to going to his class. he lets you retake tests as long as you do better than on your original test. very fair, very helpful & intelligent. i'd recommend him for any class
This guy was the only reason I did well in the class. Great person, great teacher.
tough teacher who makes sure things go directly by the text book. tests are almost exactly the same as the take home tests which makes tests a little easier. tough bulgarian accent and sometimes hard to understand
Great teacher, made math fun and understandable.
Though I did not do too well in the class, Dr. Gotchev was always willing to help me in my studies, he was always available for any questions, and helped me very much in passing the class.
Was not very good at actually explaining material, but offered opportunities to improve grades.
Excellent teacher with great knowledge. Offers opportunities to improve grades. Overall, very good.
HORRIBLE. He basically reads the book and it is pointless to go to class. He poorly prepares students for exams. You dont learn anything unless you consume a lot of time studying independently. He doesn't know the material well, and his approach is very confusing.Don't take this class.
nice guy , but during the class he reads a book word by word...which is no good and pointless.exams are not easy ... I had 5 exams and a final,so take this professor if you really are an expert in math..;)
amazing teacher! intelligent, clear, helpful, available for help, cares about students, geniune nice guy. biggest competition fo rbest math teacher at ccsu is his wife!
Ivan is a great man who is really interested in helping his students get the best grade possible. I'd take him again.
Could not understand a word he spoke. He treats everyone like, every body is an expert in Math. He teaches out of the book, which is not helpful at all. Not helpful when asked questions about his teaching. Goes to fast for those that are not math experts.
Baiscally, I just showed up for class to know when the exams were. I learned close to nothing from his lecutures, and I just studied a ton and taught myself. If you're not good in math, you might want to avoid him.
Do not take his class, he will treat you like a math expert when you are there to learn, teaches out of the book and i cant understand him half the time, he teaches really fast and has hard take home test which are impossible
Very good professor. Granted the accent can take some adjusting to, but he's flexible with his hours. Very open to all questions and if you study hard, his exams are nothing new from what was covered. Calc is on it's own very hard. But he wants to help you pass. Only one problem: He seems to get flustered alot.
Ok...at first I wasn't really a fan of him but as the weeks progressed i felt that he cared about his students. To receive an A you have to work extremely hard. He also lets you retake your exams which helps TONS.
Just go to class.. Find a friend to do the takehomes tests with.. He gives you as much time as you need to ask questions in the beginning of class.. If you do bad on the tests.. Retake them.. The only thing is that he gets off topic and never let's you out early
He understands the material very well and tries to teach you how to think. Gives problems that make you think and understand why and what your doing. Available for extra help and will stay longer for you. Most people with trouble didn't understand fundamentals and shouldn't be in that class until they do. Teaches to think for yourself.
Originally did not like him, however my respect for this teacher went up greatly once i started seeing him after class and asking for help. really does care for your grade and trys his best to help so you can get a better grade. dont let his accent and poor clarity fool you, hes a great teacher. put effort in + see him after class and you'll pass.
Literally my favorite teacher. Although he has an accent, you can understand him. He deeply wants you to succeed. you can retake every test. he lets you ask as many questions as you want, always available for extra help. he really cares about math and your grade. great teacher. the material is hard, but if you study you'll do great.
Very hard to understand at first but you will get use to it and begin to understand him. If you're looking for someone to just pass you in math but telling you the simpliest ways to get the answer, he will not do that for you. Most times he has trouble explaining himself and spends lots of times mumbling off into nothingness. Not an easy grader
Very hard to understand, and takes the longest possible way to explain things.
By far the best Math Professor i've ever had! I didnt think I had a prayer of passing he cares about your grade, lets you retake exams, hw is not checked, attendance didnt matter. He was able to answer in depth questions and show several ways of performing tasks until you understand it. Do the HW and show up ull do fine. Our entire class passed!
Don't worry about his accent it is really not that bad. Very very very inteligent professor. He knows what is talking about. Does a good job explaning. He won't become your personal friend but he will be more than glad to help you during his office hours. Takes into considiration what students say so you can negotiate. Take him, but study!!!
I read the reviews for Professor Gotchev and thought he would really help me understand math, wrong. He was the worst teacher i have ever had, you cannot understand a word he says and my entire class failed most of the tests. Terrible teacher, retaking with someone else. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Great smart man, but his explanation take forever. It's like taking a detour from "Hartford to Boston" class would know what I'm talking about. He a fair man though, his exams are easy... its the same as take home if you fail than no comment mate. Recommended for sure.
Gotchev has extremely good intentions, but thats good and bad.He wants you to think. He's all about theory rather than being straight forward and telling you how to do the problems, and calls it real math. It's hard to understand him and his teaching will put you to sleep. He doesnt interact with the class, just stands for a couple hours and lectures
Sometimes it's hard to follow his lectures. If you are able to find someone to help you outside of class, they can be done easily. Also, I did poorly the first exam and aced it when he let me retake it because they were almost identical. It makes you study and appreciate how he gives you a second chance. He's a really nice guy at heart, seriously.
He has very high standards and sometimes gets carried away with problems, but he's a nice guy and does seem to want you to learn. He gives retakes but they harder than the original test and you have to take the second grade regardless of how you do. He's not a pushover but if you state your case well enough he'll think about what you're saying.
One of the best math teachers I've had the pleasure of learning under. He is sometimes hard to understand, but if you have a question he will make sure you understand what is going on. The only catch is that you have to make an effort to learn, but if you put in the effort he takes a difficult subject (in this case calc) and makes it very easy.
He is a great teacher,do the take homes by yourself and if you have any problem with it, go to him for help, you will do well in the exam, don't expect the exam to be exactly the same as the take home though, you have to really understand the material,do not miss any class is the key!
I absolutely hated this class. He could not meet with me any time but his office hours, so no matter how much i asked for help, i couldn't get it. Lectures are boring, and they are extremely hard to follow
He is hard to understand. All the Calculus test are easy except for Test #3 which was a real pain. He keeps you later than the 3:20 and spends too much time on 1 problem. He puts simple equations on the board and super hard equations on the tests. No study guide for the Final, no hints, suggestions, nothing. It was TERRIBLE.
He is the definition of crazy hard. He gives you the option to retake your quizzes but with a catch of course, they are twice as hard as the first one so think twice before retaking your quizzes. Be prepared to learn the material on your own because you will walk out of class every day without learning anything.
Calculus is second nature for him. Lectures are very fast paced, you may stop and ask questions. Homework is outrageous; take home exams and strenuous amounts of online homework due the same day we have to take a test. He offers retakes, but study MUCH harder for those.. they are difficult. Use your resources: book, tutor, office hours.. GOOD LUCK.
If you get a class with this man, switch out immediately. As a first semester freshman math major, I hopped right into Calc 2, admittedly a hard course, but Gotchev is awful. He makes no attempt to level with students, rambles and is rude and hard to understand, and the take home exams and homework will make you cry. Doesn't show up to Off hrs.
HORRIBLE! It will take at least 2 weeks to understand his accent.. His take home exams and exams are horrible. The average of our last exam was a 50! and theres 25 ppl in the class!! DONT TAKE THIS CLASS IM SERIOUS!!!!!
Inspirational quote from Gotchev: “Math is like driving a car. It’s hard at first, but with practice it gets easy.” If his class were a car, most people would never make it out of their driveway. Lectures are hard to follow unless you study before every class and most people who understand what he attempts to teach in class still do poorly on tests
Oh my goodness. His lectures are very hard for me to follow. Maybe if you've taken calculus before, he'd be easier to understand. I never took calc in high school, so I have such a hard time following along. Tests and take-home exams are pretty hard. Just so many analogies about hot air balloons and fathers and driving from Hartford to Boston.
Professor Gotchev knows the material very well. He does have a Bulgarian accent but he is easy to understand. This class is very challenging but if you utilize the book, online math lab, and his office hours you can pass. Make sure to ask questions in class, he will clarify anything you have trouble understanding.
If you want to learn the material well, take it with Gotchev. He has a little bit of an accent, but it really isn't that bad. The take home tests are harder/longer than the actual test. So if you understand the take homes you'll be fine. Wish I could have him for more classes honestly.
Gotchev has a bit of an accent but he's not hard to follow at all. Even though I didn't do well in the class. I must say if you go to him for help he will try his hardest to make you understand the material. Don't be afraid to ask for help in his class.
Very hard class
Gotchev was an okay teacher. His class is frustrating but actually completely reasonable to pass. You can make up any and all tests. Once you take a test, he goes over every single problem on his tests. His homework is all online and it is pretty bad but gets easy when you figure out the tricks. He's extremely willing to answer questions. Take him!
Has an accent, but you get used to it quickly. Takes class seriously and will answer anyall questions posed to him. Never did a retake, but available on all tests. Clearly wants his students to succeed. Follows syllabus to the letter and everyone's tests are graded the same, you won't be singled out for asking more questions or using office hours.
He gives more opportunities to succeed then any professor I came across. 4 exams and a final, but you if you have a bad grade in any 4 exams you could make up and get a better grade. You go to him, he is always there. He is fair because he actually teaches you not just gives you what you want. Take him, and just try you your best. You will succeed
I took Prof. Gotchev's MAT 101 class during the winter session. It was a rather intense class; close to five hour class sessions every day, Monday through Thursday. At first, I struggled a lot--math is not my forte. But Prof. Gotchev really helped me understand the material and was understanding with grading, etc. Really great professor!!
Fantastic professor- Course material can be challenging if u never took Calc in highschool -but if u work hard & do the hwk you'll be fine. The hwk is suggested. Gives take home exams that he grades & the actual tests are similar to the takehomes-so just study the take-home exams & you'll be fine. 4 tests & 1 final. Allows u to retake any exam
His take home tests are fairly accurate representations of what the in-class tests are, but he's an awful grader. He gives absolutely no grading curve at all no matter the class average and his lectures are extraordinarily boring. Also the final was by far the most challenging test of the class.
Gives four tests and three take home exams for the semester, and then a final. The final is by far the most difficult test, which is misleading considering the other exams. He also gave no review for it. It is a passable class, but expect many of your fellow classmates to do poorly. On the plus side, after each test he reviews the entire thing.
This guy is absolutely horrible, I don't know how his rating is over 3. He can't teach, his grading system is bad, he'll take off 80% of point for a simple error, and his handwriting looks garbage. He even insults his students. This guy is taking advantage his tenure. If you want to teach yourself the material and cry, well then be my guest.
Such a terrible professor. If your whole class drops out and the remaining people are still struggling to get that C- for a grade you shouldn't be teaching. DO NOT pick him as a teacher. Math department needs to get rid of these terrible teachers.
Dr. Gotchev was a great teacher for calc 2. His take home exams are just like the exams, so make sure you do them and understand them. You really need to understand the material to do well in the class, but ask questions during class if you have them. Overall fun class!
He's such a good professor. He's very helpful, and lenient with grading. Lets you retake tests whenever you want. My favorite professor this semester. 10/10 would recommend. Inspirational and passionate about math.
Professor Gotchev is fairly straightforward. He tells it like it is and gets to the point in his lectures. If you put the time in you'll do fine. Most of your grade in his class is based on four exams, four take-home exams, and the final. As long as you do the take-homes, the exams are easy.
He's horrible, he gives 4 take home exams throughout the semester with each being anywhere from 3-5 pages and then you have an in class exam to go with them.
Gotchev is a good guy. He explains concepts very clearly in class if you can get used to his accent. He outlines all the material during lectures and goes through each step when doing examples. Do the online homework, complete the take-home exams, and study. You will do well. Don't let the reviews from kids who didn't put in the effort fool you.
Dr. Gotchev is a decent professor, though his accent is a little hard to understand sometimes. He gives take-home exams to prepare for the actual exam. He goes over the exam the very next class to see exactly where you went wrong and allows retakes if you need to provided you do better the second time around. Really helps out in office hours!
This is the most condescending professor I have ever had. The class averages were always terrible because it's hard to follow his lectures. He does not curve. I would not recommend anyone take a class with him. He does not understand or respect his students.
Tough class, but its set up fairly. His classes are lecture heavy so your going to want to go to class. Lets you make up each test.
Very knowledgeable about the content. Main problem is that he believes that once he teaches you, your'e suppose to get it. No curves and grades hard. He will put you down if you don't know understand. His take home exams are difficult and tests are similar to the take home exams. Great things is that you can retake it for a higher grade.
I feel the professors' teaching style did not work for me.
He explains the material very well and makes you understand what he is talking about. You can retake every exam and the make up exam is almost the same as the actual exam. If you study you will get a good grade. He is accessible out of class and really helpful. Exam 3 was the hardest one, but he provides graded take-home exams for each as practice.
Great teacher, he knows the ins and outs of what he is teaching, unlike other teachers he actually doesn't get carried by the book. He actually teaches so well. Take him if you want a good experience with math. If you do the take-home tests, and spend some time reviewing the problems similar to those questions, you'll et a great grade.
Old-school, focus on proofs more than examples. No homework, but 'take home quiz' which will count for a significant % of the grade. Hard problems on both those and lectures - prepare to do a TON of algebra. Got an A in Calc I, but withdrew from Gotchev's Calc II so I could re-take it. Many of my classmates were doing re-takes.
Now Ive had to take Calc 2 twice with him, but I can say that was because I didnt take it seriously the first half of the first semester and got a D+. As long as you do the online homework and do decent on the takehome tests, you can average a 50 on the exams and pass. Not to mention how he cares about the students, he wants his kids to succeed
10% - Online Homework you must pay $100 to access. 30% - 4 Take Home Quizzes 40% - 4 Exams 20% - Final Exam Exam heavy, but allows retakes. If you study hard and pay for the homework, you will pass.
He is, in class, a read off book and that's what you get. Writes on the board, and then goes onto the next thing. He will ask you to ask questions and will try to answer, but sometimes answer another similar question that takes a really long time. He does care about students passing, however the tests are unbelievably hard in comparison to notes.
Took the 5 week summer course, didn't look forward to going to the online lectures. Almost always didn't start and finish in the time allotted. Lectured for a whole 2 hours. One thing that was nice is he does let you re-take exams if you happen to get a poor grade, but didn't make math any more fun than it is. One take home/in class test a week.
Teaches poorly and grades hard.
While he may offer retakes, it's for a reason. Does not elaborate on his examples in class leaving you to feel lost. The math center was little to no help for the contents of this course. During office hours there are students who are doing retakes so you can't even ask him what you needed help with. Overall avoid taking if possible.
Got the text book thinking it was mandatory and haven't opened it once. He takes attendance so class is mandatory. Even after writing down everything he says and everything on the board I still feel lost. He offers office hours but sometimes you can't even get a hold of him with all the other students. Sometimes his office is too full for retakes
Even while half the class is struggling and this is known by the grade received from the professor he still continues to teach in his mediocre ways. All he offers for outside of class help is office hours which is nice but difficult to get help when there are a bunch of students waiting for test retakes. Nice as a person, not a great professor.
He filled in for his wife for one of my classes, and although his teaching method was not quite aligned with my learning ability (I suck at math) I loved him. He was funny and so kind and truly wanted his students to succeed.
Math is not a strong skill for me as it is, and Prof. Gotchev did not make it any better. I showed up to every class but felt like I didn't learn anything. He throws a bunch of material on the board every class and always goes over the time class is supposed to end. Less and less people were showing up because they were dropping the class.
Prof. Gotchev wasnt a great professor for me. He is a very smart guy but he cant convey the concepts effectively. He assumes you already have mastered everything and can just do integrals in your head. He gives you edfinity homework, take home exams, and in class exams and it was just too hard and too much to handle.
He is great at teaching if you actually listen, but it's hard to fit calculus into 1 semester. Some stuff is rushed but still on the test which isn't fair. He goes overtime by 10 mins often. Overall Prof. Gotchev did change my perspective on math in a positive way. It was HARD work to get an A, you will need to study a bit with outside sources.
He's caring and helpful, but only if you reach out for it and try. He's showed us pretty cool tricks in math, and take-home exams were a great way to get a feel for in-class exams. I wish he gave less tests, though. Many struggled and he had to spend extra lectures reviewing them, which meant rushed material in the last half of the semester.
Kind man, but I found his class extremely difficult. His teaching style did not work for me, come into class with everything written on the board from the last class and expected to understand off the bat. He is knowledgable, but expects you to understand after one quick lecture. Hard tests and no curves, read the book provides very few examples
Professor is a heavy lecturer. Professor doesn't do too many practice problems in class, spent a lot of time outside class studying. One good thing is the actual exam is very similar to the take home so if you do fine on the take home you should do fine on the in class exam. Professor allows retakes.
His class is all lectures and he explains all the problems very thoroughly. However his lectures lack any personality other than just math to keep you engaged. While that can be good for some people who are good at staying focused, it will be difficult to follow along if you struggle to pay attention.
He cares and he is helpful. You have to reach out for help but he is super accommodating and supportive. The class is hard and the test are hard, but if you do the homework the tests will be easier. Every lecture ran over class time, some material was rushed. But overall the best experience I have had with a math professor.
He could benefit from going over less theory and more problems, as it is a difficult class to grasp without sufficient example problems. There is much homework which is helpful, but it takes a lot of time, and it can be hard to balance if you are a full-time student. Class often goes over, and usually we are taught new material right before exams.
Gotchev is a good professor and all of class time was focused on lecturing the textbook. You could get by from not asking questions or meeting with him, but you will improve dramatically if you do. Lecture is a bit of a snooze fest but I found it to be much better than learning the textbook yourself. Note taking is vital to understanding.
Worst prof I've ever had. I usually love math, but this prof took my heart and crushed it into a million pieces. He "taught" us by pulling up the online textbook, and just pointing to it. Never did any examples in class either. Exams 1 + 3 had an average of 44%. Calc 2 is a hard class, but if that many of us are failing, maybe you're the problem.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. Class is a lecture and time to ask questions. He is extremely smart, sometimes not the best at explaining. I appreciated that he always went over every test after we took it and reviewed the class before the test. Grade is online homework, 4 take home tests, 4 tests, and a final. Do not get the textbook
Challenging but rewarding class. Professor Gotchev is knowledgeable, but his teaching style may not work for everyone. Engage with the material, use Unstuck AI and the textbook, and you'll do well.
A very knowledgeable professor, the class is semi-difficult but if you pay attention you'll be fine, you do have take-home exams that are due the day of exams which is a study guide.
Dr Gotchev is extremely fair. He doesn't give extra credit or curves the grade but allows retakes on exams and gives take home exams. The grading breakdown is 40% on the 4 exams, 30% on the 4 take home exams, 20% for the final, and 10% for the online hw. His take home exams preps you for the exam, but the hw doesn't really.
He "taught" us by pulling up the online textbook, and just pointing to it. Never did any examples in class either. Exams 1 + 3 had an average of 44%. Calc 2 is a hard class, but if that many of us are failing, maybe you're the problem.
Prof. Gochev cares about your academic success. His exams are fairly difficult and you should not expect a curve. He is a very caring professor and tries his hardest to allow you to improve as a student and retake exams. although I did not pass his class this semester I look forward to be challenged again as a student and master this subject.
A lot of people find him to be unclear in class. However, I feel like if you genuinely do the homework honestly, you will do well in the class, he uses a straightforward program to assign the homework. Idk calc 2 is genuinely hard too so that may also be why students dislike the prof. Tests are difficult but definitely reflect the study guide.
