Being new to USF this semester he didn't always know the answers to administrative questions bc the rules are set by the math department. But he's easy to understand and his lectures are pretty good. He's always willing to answer questions in and outside of class. He posts his lecture notes. He's flexible and extended due dates a few times.
Very nice professor. Good at explaining concepts! He answers questions in class thoroughly and responds to emails quickly. Pauses for questions during the lecture and doesn't go over the concepts too fast. I would take him again.
He's obviously new to USF. I didn't really think he knew how to teach a huge class with 300+ students. He works problems on paper and displays them on a projector then gives clicker points. He gives like 3-4 clickers that are almost irrelevant sometimes. Just take notes on MLP and youll pass, cuz the exams are on MLP anyway. (oh and he moans...)
He does not explain his tactics to solving a problem very well. He also makes a lot of mistakes. Very monotone boring lectures.
I took Rothstein for College Algebra which should have been a fairly easy class however he caused me a lot of unnecessary stress. Luckily we had the MLP program or I would not have done well in the class. In lectures it seemed like he didn't know what he was doing. The just take notes from MLP and go to class for clicker questions, you'll do fine.
The only helpful thing that Rothstein did for his class was drop the worst grades for homework and quizzes. Otherwise, his lectures were lacking in information and often he would present incorrect information. I learned more from my math lab and the tutors in the smart lab than him.
Rothstein is smart when it comes to math but not when it comes to teaching. I had already had college algebra but got put in the class anyway so it was very boring and Rothstein would make the easiest of problems very complicated and would often mess up his own work and try to laugh it off. college algebra is not as difficult as he makes it seem
Expect a lot of work when it comes to this class, minimum of 3 hours lab per week and minimum of 3 HWQuizzes on top of that and sometimes more. Does not count the lowest exam.
I do not know why his ratings are so low. Just took him for summer A, he was funny and straightforward. What he said to study is exactly what is on the tests. He was really helpful.
Rothstein is very understanding with many things. He's very insightful if you take the chance to talk to him. Amazing professor.
He's really helpful and he seems to genuinely care about how well his students do. The test reviews are similar to the tests, you just have to really practice the review problems in order to do very well on the tests. He gives you a few days to complete the homework and it's a good idea to do them because they help your grade.
Rothstein is an overall good teacher. I had him for precalc and he is very helpful, he tries to make his class fun. He goes slowly enough in class for you to process the information, unlike some professors.
The class is straightforward,Tests are simple and smooth,However,I do not like SmartLab hours. If it is a lab for smart people why do I need to go there 2 hours a week when I could be 2 hours into the History Channel Even Rothstein seems disinterested in the material he needs to teach he is accessible before and after class. He speaks Spanish to
I think people underestimate him because the course is set up so that most of the practice and learning is done online (MyMathLab). You only see him twice a week for lecture and everything else is at the math lab. He drops the 6 lowest quiz & 6 lowest homework. Drops the lowest test grade. Email him & he'll extend the homework if MLP is acting up.
i loved him! i had him for two semesters and he explains everything. if you don't understand something he will stay after class and help you as well as office hours. he gives practice test and if you do them they are extra credit, be sure to do them! they are exactly like the exam and are a huge help when studying! i would take him again.
Each ch has hw and a quiz, practice test available for extra credit. 2 attempts for each test. His lectures entail him doing practice problems , sometimes too quickly since he runs out of time. prepare to teach yourself concepts in easier ways than he explains. must complete 2 hrs min of lab hours per week, easy way to boost grade.
Dr. Rothstein was an excellent professor! His attempted jokes and sass made the class as interesting as you can make a math class. The lecture was easy to follow, very easy to ask questions during class and after. He posts the notes online as well if you missed something. Attendance is not necessarily mandatory, but he does do clicker questions.
He was one of the best math teachers on the subject from what I've heard except for the teacher that writes the book that we have to use. He goes step b step through everything and he always has a review before the tests. The final is optional and there's online homework every week but overall it's a good class and he's a good teacher.
A lot of homework and quizzes but expect that with any math class. I often left lectures confused but understood it after doing online homework. ALWAYS do the pre tests, they will save you because they are extremely similar to test.
I had him for Engineering Calculus I, and he was amazing. Of course the class is difficult, but he is very good at teaching the material. If you try, you will get the grade you want. His lectures were all i needed for the tests, did not look at the book once. Reasonable with grading, would recommend attending classes. Very helpful professor.
Hes a bit scattered in the first few classes but he is willing to work with you on anything you need. Get to know him so youre not just another face in the crowd and he will make sure to come by and help you out whenever you see him in the smartlab
Took Rothstein for Engineering Calculus 1. He definitely makes you work for the grade, but he gives partial credit. He'll be very particular about what he gives points about, or even if your totally lost, he'll still give you partial credit. He only did quizzes on Tuesdays, but the problems he did in class are closer to the test than webassign.
Dr. Rothstein is a great professor. As long as you attend his lectures and do your homework as well as the pre-tests you will do great in his class! He will go over problems in class before the test so you can gain clarity on what you need to know on issues you are having. I would take him again!
Expect spending time in the smart lab every week, it helps a lot and he is usually in there to help.
Professor Rothstein was an excellent Calc professor! He was clear about his expectations and grading criteria, incredibly understanding of his students, and an effective communicator of the material. He did everything in his power to make sure that you not only understood Calculus, but actually made it enjoyable to learn.
Good professor, works out problems on the projector so you can see all the steps
Such an easy course. Homework and quizzes are online and he drops several homeworks/ quizzes, and one exam. Excellent professor. Very clear about what to expect on exams.
Really kind of funky. Would try to show examples but messed them up at least once a week. Still, a really easy course for just getting that math credit out of the way. He drops your lowest test score and a bunch of other grades, so I would recommend. Gives so much extra credit and drops so many poor grades that I received a 103% as final grade.
He isn't the best professor out there, but his class was really easy. He doesn't really teach everything that's on the online homework. You can get by this class by teaching yourself with the "help me solve this" option on the homework. I skipped class a few times and it didn't hurt me. He sometimes did clicker point questions to take attendance.
Take this professor if you're looking for an easy math to fill the FKL requirement. 90% of his class is done through the smart lab & clicker questions is a very low percent of your grade so its okay if you miss a couple classes. Plus he drops quizzes, lab attendance, and one test. He does a couple group activities & he says on canvas when those are
He has a nice personality, but he goes off track a lot. Cannot convey ideas that smoothly, Had to retake the class with another professor who was so much more helpful. This professor consistently had the lowest test averages all semester long.
Explains concepts poorly.
I took college algebra because I needed a math credit and math is not my strong suit in any way. While I'm sure he's a great teacher for upper level courses, he was extremely condescending to us. We could tell he didn't want to be there and he never explained new terms, he just start using them without defining them, leaving us all confused.
Great professor, really helpful during tutoring in the library and office hours. When it comes to math, you have to put the time into it to understand it. Math has never been my strong point, but I put many hours a week into it and I have an A.
I think he is nice and caring, but if you don't have a lot of background in algebra or math. The way he taught could be helpful but also he didn't explain some of the concepts at all because he assumes you have already learned them and know them. It is an easy A if you already have taken algebra courses and he drops some of your lowest grades.
The actual math isn't hard, but this class is time consuming mainly because of the smart. Extra credit it available! He goes to the smart lab to help out student with specific problem. Just make sure you do the work, and study a little bit for the quiz and you will do just fine.
I'm not strong in math but I spent a lot of my time reteaching myself math thru the textbook because he just SUCKS at explaining math. I earned an A but that was bc I had to really work for it. He's ok but i just dont like the way he teaches
Pretty solid teaching style. Gives out lots of extra credit and is available for extra help during his office hours and in the SMARTLAB.
Simply being consistent with attending lectures, studying material and doing homework will yield you a perfect grade. Ivan Rothstein is a decent teacher and College Algebra is straightforward.
He is very kind and truly wants everyone to pass.. He's an amazing dr, extremely helpful and caring with the students.
Would not take again, the lectures did not correlate with the homework, quizzes and exams. He had clicker question's so that's the only reason I showed up to his lectures. MathlabsPlus and the Smartlab saved me in this class. Without them, it would have been terrible. Would not recommend.
90% of class is online on my labs plus but you should show up to get extra clicker points. Since there's so much content in little time in summer course, expectation are to do hw 4 times a week. The tests are pretty simple if you can do the homework well but you have limited attempts to do questions. Keep up with online work & attend, should pass
College algebra is not hard. didnt take notes in class & never had to go to his office hours. The class is a lot of work but if you do good on the homework and quizzes you will pass the class. The tests are basically the homework and overall the class was decent. The homework teaches you everything you need to know for the test and quizzes.
I took college algebra with him last spring and he was really great. He explains stuff easily and clearly its not hard to get a good grade with him.
Terrible at explaining equations and concepts. When students raise their hands and ask questions, he always has a rude comment to add. There are 4 exams and one final in total. Wouldn't even bother using the practice exams to study, because none of the material is on the actual exams. Extremely unhelpful.
He makes everything super complicated instead of showing the simple way to do things. Only go to class because of the clicker grades, a lot of homework but he does drop your lowest grades. It was a waste of my time.
Hes not study friendly or approachable. Doesnt care about whats going on outside of the classroom. Makes lectures difficult to understand rather than simplifying them. Other MAC1105 professors extend assignments or offer EC opportunities, Rothstein doesnt.
A very hands-off teacher that let's the student do all of the learning themselves with some SmartLab of course. This is understandable because the College Algebra class had around 200 students. But overall a very mediocre professor, not great but not faulty. If you perform as is expected you will do well.
He's the first math instructor in a while that I understand well. He's easy to talk to outside of class, the SmartLab helps a lot for practicing/studying, and he drops a lot of grades. If you don't try you will struggle. Show up to class and stay focused, attend smartlabs, ask questions, and you'll do fine.
There's not really much I can say about Rothstein, because he's really just your standard math professor. He's a little boring, but he has his funny moments, and he's very responsive to emails. Tons of grades are automatically dropped at the end of the semester. I wouldn't have passed otherwise. Do the homework and the practice exams!
This class can be bland, but I don't know that has anything to do with the professor. There's a "group project", but I find it extremely unnecessary and might as well be an individual assignment. If I were you, I'd try to avoid any class with required smartlab time if possible.
Not a bad professor. He basically explains the basics of the information you need to learn and the rest is to be learned on your own on My Labs. Overall, the professor is nice and helps you if you need it but at times it can be confusing.
His lectures are boring and you want to die sometimes and i suck at math 100% but what i like most about him that he is always here to help if you needed anything, he likes students who ask alot of questions and for the final exam their is a second attempt which you can do online and by yourself which is awesome
Im baffled with how he has such a low rating. He is the best math professor I have ever had. He explains everything so clearly. Moreover, he once said, I am always looking for the smallest excuse to extend your homework... he has countlessly extended homework dates for our convenience. I ended up with a 99.52% in his class after 4 exams.
The nicest professor I've ever had! He definitely cares about his students and wants to make sure you're actually learning the material and overall concepts. Due to class times he isn't able to go over everything you'll be tested on, but he definitely tries his best! Very caring and knowledgeable!
This teacher is amazing. He grades fairly and usually takes off grades that you fail in. You can easily pass it if you go to class and go to the smart lab. For every test you take you get an extra credit assignment that can boost your grade by a whole point. Perfect laid back professor for easy going students.
This class isn't hard to pass but it's really fast paced with 2-3 assignments due in the smart lab each week. He drops the 4 lowest quiz & homework grades which is great in case you missed one since he doesn't give extensions.
Homework, quizzes, take home midterm, final group presentation. Dr. Rothstein was so nice and really just wanted everyone to do well. If you show up, and put in a good effort on the work, you should get an A for sure. If you skip a lot, and don't try he won't help you out as much. Take him! Interesting class, great professor!
Probably a typical math professor. He isn't very enthusiastic but you should still come to class anyway because clicker points weigh heavily on your grade. Sometimes he gets confused in class but once again, not the worst you could get. Everything is online anyway.
Not a bad professor but not the best, mainly because calculus is a tough subject. He does clicker questions every class so you kinda have to go
He's a great professor. Take him if you get the chance. You would not regret it.
I've had this professor before yet couldn't avoid taking this course with him this time around. He's confused and messes up when teaching the lectures for most of the time. When asking questions getting confused replies or replies that don't even answer the question. This caused the class to be a lot harder than I expected, enters grades slowly.
Professor was understanding and helpful even after I had an accident that would have affected my grade. I took this class in the summer so it went by fast. Lecture based class usually with a lot of students.
Lectures made the content a lot easier to understand than just following the examples on MyLab. Exams were a majority of the grade percentage and there were only three exams. But, he does let you retake the exam once and drops the lowest grades from homework, quizzes, and clickers. You will 100% need the clicker in his class. Overall a great prof.
Overall, it was ok. He's not the best and not the worst. Pretty typical math professor.
The online work isn't hard, you can take quizzes as many times as you want. I took calc in hs so this class was easy for me, but this was not a good prof. for calc. He used another prof.s powerpoints and didn't know them well enough to teach with them. None of what we did in class helped with peer leading.
Great person but extremely tough class and not exactly the best professor.
Mr. Rothstein was personally invested in my success in his class. Math has always been challenging for me and he made sure to speak with me after each class to ensure I understood the material he went over. He gave me a ton of motivating and encouraging advice as I just wanted to give up. Ive never had a teacher care so much, hes simply amazing.
Considering the huge adjustments, he was sooooo nice and helped us a lot. He has a lot of homework but it helps prepare for exams. I failed the first exam but final replaces lowest and I will be ending up with an A. He always helped and quick to reply. Lectures are a bit long and confusing but exams are straight forward, recommend!!!!!!
I am not a skilled math person but I will say that as the semester progressed, I grew to like Ivan a lot more. Calc is already a challenging subject. At the end of the semester, he dropped a certain amount of "TopHat" and Quiz scores, which genuinely helped a lot. Do well on the first 3 exams, and you won't have to worry about doing the 4th!
Definitely a teacher to become used to. His style is a bit different in terms of lecture. However, if you do the homework through repetition and study enough to do well on some tests, this teacher will definitely help. Great teacher but you do need to do some textbook teaching. (Not way too bad).
There is a LOT of homework, but he is an awesome teacher so it's worth it. He really does want you to pass and he will help you out however he can. He's really funny, really cool, and he broke down calc 3 in a way I've never seen before. Overall he's an awesome guy and I'd definitely take him again if I had another math class.
Get ready to spend hours in the smart lab! Personally, I am fine with teaching myself and learning form homework problems so this class was super easy for me. Whenever I had questions I would ask him in the smart lab and he was super helpful. For the people that need their hands held, this class would be difficult.
If you had Steve, you typically passed this class. If you had Ivan, you had to work extra hard to pass because he wouldn't know the answers himself. Rumor has it he was fired afterward but I am not totally sure.
He does a really good job of explaining material, and testing you on that material. What I mean is, he does not make the test problems super complicated. He makes the material from this class challenging, while keeping the parts of those problems from previous classes more simple.
Class meetings are not required and were just used for us to ask questions about the content. His recorded lectures were helpful most of the time and he is the most understanding prof i've ever had. If we were struggling or needed anything he'd extend an assignment or help as much as he could. He's a really funny dude as well, I enjoyed the class.
His notes never really seemed to help me so I was just using the homework to learn how to solve the problems and then you take the quiz right after. The pretests didnt really make sense as you couldnt go back to see what the incorrect problems were. Pretests also went in as a grad which didnt make sense. Lots of material to cover in this course.
I took professor Rothstein and absolutely loved him. He is really understanding and lets you make up assignments past the due date if you email him. I didn't think the class was super hard and he gave quite a few extra credit opportunities. He also is really quick about responding to emails which is nice because a lot of profs lack that quality!
Tests are worth a lot of your grade (60%). His notes weren't useful at all, so I crammed the practice tests and the test guides that he gives out. You're better off using MyMathLabs to study than his notes.
Professor Rothstein is nice enough but he expects too much. His lectures are recorded and skip steps, class time is for questions but he doesn't answer the questions half the time, and I spent the entire semester waiting for the class to be over. Would not recommend.
Professor Rothstein is relaxed and understanding. The tests were not particularly difficult, some problems are long but that is the nature of DE's. There is usually 1 homework per week on Pearson and their problems are hard, but you have infinite attempts. If you can do these honestly, or at least understand them, you will do well on the tests.
Cool teacher, exams and homework is tough but calc 3 in general is tough so theres not an easy solution to that. The homework is 50 questions on webassign and he gives a full week so thats nice. He also grades leniently and drops quizs and homework. Sometimes its hard to follow along as the class gets harder. Overall good choice for a teacher.
professor rothstein is nothing special. he posts the notes and lectures on canvas and it's pretty much up to us to navigate throughout the course. for someone that likes to work independently, he was a good professor to have. his open office hours are a good way to make sure you know what you're doing, but i never went to class and still got an A!
Good teacher but relies heavily on tests and quizzes that may be ahead of what you are learning in class. Get ready to watch multiple videos to stay caught up with what is going on outside of the hour long classes. He's good but the class isn't long enough to answer all questions and he moves kind of fast and skips steps.
This class wasn't hard if you understand algebra but you will spend lots of time on homework and quizzes. I taught myself since his lectures didn't really help with the hw. There are a lot of exams but as long as you do the extra credit practice test you should do fine on the exams. The exams were identical to the extra credit practice exams.
Posts vids of teaching the content. Most of your learning will come from MyLab & Mastering. Drops 4 Canvas quizzes, 4 lab quizzes, 4 homeworks, and 1 exam (final is optional if you like your grade). Unlimited attempts on quizzes. Professor is very nice and reviews content in every class, if needed.
Rothstein is an okay teacher. He records lectures and drops 4 homeworks, 4 quizzes, and 1 exam. You also get re-takes for each exam, except the final. I suck at math so I had to put in extra work when learning. The exams are worth 70% of our grade, which doesn't equal the amount of work put in for homework and quizzes. He should def change that.
Dr Rothstein is very good and talented professor. He recorded lectures and gave us extra credit. Great professor
He is unkind and he does not explain things thoroughly. Has an attitude all the time.
He is nice... Just be prepared for a lot of homework, a lot of time in the smart lab, and the grading scale is a bit off... you must do good on your tests to get a good grade in the class.
This professor was awesome! He explains the notes and gives you helpful tips to succeed. You have a lot of homework and spend a lot of time in the SMARTlab, but if you put in the time and effort you can leave with a good grade.
Prof Rothstein was a great professor. To be honest you don't have to go to your classes as long as you do all of the homework and quizzes online. He has given a lot of allowances and drops a lot of work. I really recommend as this prof is strict but very caring and understanding.
Rothstein was very forgiving throughout the semester which I appreciated a lot. His teaching style is hard to follow so I never went to class. There's typically two hws and quizzes every week but they don't take too long. The exam study guides are the most important thing. Study these very well and you will do good on exams and get a good grade.
The lectures didn't help me much but as long as you get the work done it is pretty easy. He is very fast to respond to emails too. All lectures were posted online which helped.
I barely attend class and received an A in the course. Make sure you are on top of your homework and quizzes in the SMART Lab as it is most of this class. I absolutely recommend taking advantage of the practice exams he assigns because they reflect the real exams. There is 4 exams and the final which you can drop if need be.
Didn't really go to class since the smart lab teaches you how to do the work. There was 2 quizzes and 2 homeworks each week but they were easy. He drops your lowest exam grade so you might not even have to take the final. Studying for the exams was easy since the study guide was literally the same questions but different numbers. Would recommend.
Dr. Rothstein is the perfect professor for differential equations. He understands the sometimes tedious nature of the subject and will frequently showcase interesting tricks to simplify problems significantly. His personality and seemingly endless bag of tricks make differential equations a much more enjoyable experience than it would be otherwise.
Very in-depth and thorough lectures.
Mid-semester opinion: Not a good teacher. He doesn't go over examples in class and he gives no practice problems for exams. Also expect 4 times the homework load of calc 2 (~50 problems weekly, usually around 8 hours of work if you don't use Chegg)
For Calc 3 here are some of his cons: Doesn't go over specific material that will be on the exam No formula sheet for his exams Exams cover way too many sections Class averages for exams are low Lectures are very confusing and hard to follow He assigns way too much homework, everyone ends up using chegg Pros: He gives makeup credit for some exams
Professor Rothstein is fine. I didn't attend many lectures near the end of the semester because I didn't find it as helpful as just reading the textbook and doing the SMARTLab homework. There's a lot of homework, most of the time he assigns two homework and two quizzes a week, but sometimes he assigns three. He's ok, nothing special.
I took this class over the summer so the professor assigned a lot more homework at once, but there is a lot of homework and smartlab work due in a short amount of time. The lectures aren't that helpful. I found it better to teach myself from the homework and quizzes than to attend lectures.
His class is lecture heavy, but he gives every example that you'll see on the test, and attendance isn't mandatory. He requires you to spend time in the lab for only 6% of the overall grade so you can get help if you need. His review sessions encourage you to ask questions. I normally suck at math, and I got an A-.
Took during the summer for college algebra credit, he gives long lectures that explain the material but to be honest I learned more from practicing the problems on the Pearson homework software. Do the homework, there's a lot of it. He drops some low grades. His lectures before the tests helped but generally he's not super special, but good.
doesn't use PowerPoint, writes very tiny on the board, gives you no context when doing problems on the board, expects you to understand it after the first time, gives homework problems on things he doesn't teach but expects you to know how to do after learning the basic concept, HORRIBLE TA.. shall I go on?
Attendance is not mandatory, but going to class helps. He posts the lectures right after class ends. He teaches you well and even does some of the homework questions during class if time permits. He replies to your Canvas messages quickly. He's a good professor!
He's an alright teacher. Assigns a decent amount of homework, but it's manageable. His lectures aren't super helpful and his canvas grading system is confusing. Grades don't have an effect on your overall score till much later, so it's hard to determine what your true grade is in the class. Overall, he's okay but not great if you struggle in math.
This professor is a joke. Everything in the lectures has nothing to do with what was on the MyMathLab homework and quizzes. You learn everything in the SmartLab on your own and going to class is just a waste of time. He claims that what he teaches in the classroom "is just to give a baseline", but it's no where close. Would not recommend him.
I had Rothstein for college algebra and he teaches it well. Per the university, you have to spend 2 hours a week in the Smart Lab for a grade, which is the only place you can do quizzes. There are usually 2 quizzes and 2 homework assignments a week, but again, that's just the course. Overall, good professor and easily accessible.
Attendance isn't mandatory and his lectures and notes are posted on Canvas. Required to spend 2 hours in the library's smart lab to do all the assignments and quizzes on top of his lecture, if you have a question in class, he won't answer it and tells you to ask the tutors because he can't answer the questions. Tutors helped a lot more than he did.
He was a good lecturer, made everything clear and had lots of examples. Gave a lot of extra credit to make sure we wouldn't fail and gave plenty of opportunities to retake previous exams. Made Calc 3 a really good class.
He has very poor explanations, and goes very quickly. When you ask questions, it feels like he's judging you. He ended up giving some extra credit at the end, but not worth the stress for the entire semester. I feel like I could have gotten a better grade with a different professor, the tests are graded VERY TOUGH.
Exceptional professor at USF. The assignments greatly help test preparation. Approachable and caring, always ready to address queries. Despite the complexity of Calc 3, focused efforts yield favorable results. Recommend utilizing online Canvas videos; they cover diverse examples, enhancing understanding.
The class is very easy regardless of whether you're good at math or not. Most of your learning comes from the SMARTLab and it's extremely easy to get good grades. The notes are clear and he has good office hours. He is also generally understanding and decently fair. I would recommend this class, especially for freshmen.
The class is mostly completed through the SMARTLab and all of the assignments and quizzes are simple and easy to pass. The lectures are good and the notes are very clear. He is very fair and will drop one or two low scores. The subject is easy to understand even if you struggle with math. I highly recommend.
He goes fast. He doesn't teach concepts but directly uses example problems to explain concepts. So it might get confusing. He gives out a lot of extra credit. And the grading criteria is also clear. There is webassign for homework.
Grade is about 90% tests but every test had 10 bonus points, there was an option to get extra credit on past exams, and the last test was online and a free 100%. If you have a 98-100% and show you put in the effort you may be exempt from the final. Calc 3 is hard but as long as he sees you are really trying you should have no problem!
Dr. R is chill. He's not the best at giving explanations in class, but if you ask him to clarify he will. His exams are curved and he gives exam redemption where you can earn back half of the points you missed. Some of his exam questions seem a bit unfair but the curve makes up for it. Not the best prof but not the worst imo
Fast paced class, no cheat sheets so be ready to memorize formulas. His exam reviews are useful but don't just use them to study he likes to mix up his exams.
Dr. Rothstein is amazing! He teaches very well and makes it clear what will be on the tests. He gives some homework, but is very doable and helps study. If you need an extension he will help, and offers grade make ups for bad exams. Overall a great teacher.
Dr Rothstein is amazing. He cares about his students and is very knowledgeable yet humble. He loves his job and you can tell. There are 5 exams with the final (which can replace your worst grade counting double) and the 4th was just an online assignment with 100 attempts each question. There is a LOT of extra credit and helps during office hours.
I had Dr. Rothstein for Calculus III spring of 2024. Dr. Rothstein is humble, caring, and overall a great lecturer. He will always answer a question even if it seems redundant. Mistakes are often made on the board but he always corrects himself in an engaging way. I wish I could have him for Diff EQ and future classes.
He's very passionate, knowledgable and wants his students to become great. Absolutely nothing to worry about if you have him as a professor.
Professor Rothstein's MAC 2313 Calc III course was without a doubt one of the best classes I have taken at this school. Although he is homework-heavy with challenging tests he makes sure his students fully understand the topics he is teaching. If you do poorly on a test but show him you understand the concepts he will get you the points you need.
Goes way too fast and skips many steps. Horrible lecture notes with barely legible writing. Doesn't fully go over syllabus so make sure to be on top of all assignments. Had to watch videos on the topic after each class, which is a lot of work on top of what he already gives.
He is actually the worst math teacher i've had, if you're seeing this CHOOSE SOMEONE ELSE. You'll thank yourself, he's too fast, doesn't cover everything, and makes you're life harder than it has to be. If you ask him a question it's like you're bothering him. And the fact i have to reteach myself after every lecture is a big waste of money.
WORST MATH PROFESSOR EVER!!!! doesn't teach at all and I had to reteach myself after every lecture. makes the class way harder than it is and doesn't care at all about his students. DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL. I did not have the choice of choosing him as the other professor left.
Given that this is typically a large lecture class, you can't expect him to hold your hand. He always listens to questions during lectures and make sure to attend if you know it's going to be a difficult chapter. There is a decent amount of homework, but lecture notes are always posted after. He tries to keep students involved and participating.
He has such a bad attitude and gets annoyed at students who ask questions, and answers them poorly. He teaches new concepts as if we already know them. The things he teaches are not similar to the assignments at all. You're better off learning it all on your own through the online program rather than waste your time in class and reteach yourself.
You can consider this just a class where you take tests and that's how you get your grade, nothing else matters. Professor does not care at all about anything, and there is absolutely no point in going to the lectures as he posted all of them online and they are identical, as if a robot. Do yourself a favor and do not take with Rothstein
Good class
Very homework-heavy class and the professor is not easily accessible for help with assignments.
Not very good at lectures, his teaching style is very hit or miss and does not work for everyone. He also teaches somethings that are not on the tests/quizzes and then there are things that he does not teach. There is so many homework assignments and you have to have SMARTlab attendance which is annoying and not always an easy task. Don't reccomend
Not a great professor, many lectures taught as if we already knew the material, unprofessional, and curses at students.
I am a pre-med student taking 20 credits and this is my hardest class.... Canvas/ classes are extremely unorganized, tons of homework as well. I stopped going to class and spent that time in the smart lab teaching myself the content, that's when I finally started getting A's. He is cocky and horrible at effectively teaching. PLEASE pick elsewhere.
do NOT take him. he doesn't know what he's talking about half the time, and confuses the whole class. he's also so bad with emails, and will blame you for emailing him and wasting his time. he changed the percentage of exams and didn't tell anyone, and when asking why our grades suddenly dropped, he blamed us for not being able to read canvas.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR OR THIS CLASS. Homework load is insane. Do yourself a favor and just take calculus. SMARTLab attendance is ridiculous, tests are very hard, and you have to teach yourself everything.
Ivan's class is awesome, and I recommend him. He will help you understand the material and is available outside class for 4 hours weekly. The practice tests are like the real tests. He also provides study guides to help you prepare. He responded to emails quickly. The class material is hard, but if you do the work, you should be able to get an ‘A'.
Professor Rothstein is a good professor and provides extensive knowledge on Algebra. While some parts of his lesson can get somewhat confusing, its easy to get back on track once he further elaborates. Good teacher, just show up and pay attention.
First off I've been out of school for 6 years. THIS CLASS IS NOT AS HARD AS PEOPLE SAY. If you do the hw, due one week AFTER the lecture its not hard. SL attendance can be replaced by doing well from the quizes which are mandatory in the library. He drops a lot of grades, 4 hws, canvas quizes, quizes, 1 exam. Come to class and ask questions. Simple
Nice guy except for when he curses at the whole class, and he covers a lot of material very fast. Tons of homework each week and don't get me started on Pearson and the math lab. If you miss class he posts the lecture notes online, but don't bother trying to read his handwriting.
- alot of work - teach yourself everything because he wont - attending lectures is pointless, just go to the smartlab and watch the pearson textbook videos - smartlab is honestly insane with how much work and hours you need to put in a week - dropped exams and homework is nice
The course included 5 exams that with completion of homework and the time in smart lab were manageable. His lectures are informative but god awful to bear through, he's very brain scattered. Overrall a tolerable course and you will pass!
This professor is great as someone who usually dislikes large lectures. He never fails to answer a student's question, and is always there to help. Geniunely cares about his students and understands they have a life outside of his class. The SmartLab is the one thing that is hated about this class, but it is what it is.
Attendance is not mandatory for this class but he is a very clear and good professor. He always gives out extra credit before each exam. The material was not difficult and he explains everything very clearly. Overall a very good professor and not difficult coursework.
This class took less effort than my other classes! The course mainly revolves around the SMARTLAB. The best way to pass the class is to attend his lectures and then apply the information to the assignments! Excited to take him during Precalculus.
Professor Rothstein is a caring, humble lecturer who makes Calculus III engaging. While his teaching style can move quickly, he offers plenty of extra credit and exam redemption to help students succeed. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for reviewing concepts and preparing for tests.
Dr. Rothstein teaches mainly by doing example problems, so writing down notes during lectures helps with reviewing while doing homework. Homework, quizzes, and tests are online, and the SMARTlab is mandatory, but helpful. Dr. Rothstein also makes sure to answer everyone's questions during class and doesn't want anyone to be confused.
besides the fact he can't teach, he's unreachable!! barely answered emails and acted as if i should know the answers to my own questions. wouldn't round up my 89.64 even after finishing all the requirements and told me to check the syllabus which mentions nothing. save ur time and don't take him if you want to actually have a good class.
The classes were fun and he was good at giving us examples to do together and on our own. The SMARTLab is mandatory and it does take some time for some lessons, but the tests are easier than the practice tests. He is good at explaining the concepts and is very helpful in the SMARTLab. He is funny also.
Ivan is a great professor. His lectures were always easy to understand and he has a sense of humor. He would always be patient with everyone when asking him questions and would always explain to the best of his abilities. The downside is that tests are worth 70% of your grade but he drops your worst test grade at the end of the semester.
He really wants you to succeed. You get a test dropped at the end of the year, you get multiple quizzes and homework grades dropped too. You get two attempts on every test, infinite on quizzes. You get extra credit for doing the test reviews, which are nearly identical to the actual tests, giving you up to 4% extra credit added to your grade.
The prof has a terrible teaching style. None of the lectures taught the things you needed to do the my math lab homework, quizzes, or exams. It's better to skip all of his lectures aside the ones he assigns group tasks and stay in the smart lab to practice (which is what I did!). He's pretty nice if you email him about missing assignments though!
Very passionate about math and his students. Lots of work, but multiple attempts are given on everything including tests, so there is every opportunity to get an A+, if you fail it is your fault, not Ivan's.
If you want to learn precalc while taking Rothstein, I recommend skipping his brain-melting lectures and just going to the smart lab and working on problems on your own. Other precalc teachers here provided full study guides for tests and tons of typed notes and understandable slides. Rothstein just gave us his sloppily drawn notes from class...
Good exams bad prof
I love the guy, very funny but teaches 15% of each chapter in the lectures so you'll have to spend quite a while at the SmartLab and self-teach for the tests. Practice tests are extra credit and IDENTICAL to the exams. The people that fail this simply didn't put enough effort, answers emails quickly and will explain the work further :)
Rothstein is an entertaining, funny guy; however he needs to get his shit together. he gives no effort. The only resource you get to learn from are his messy notes, and he only covers 10% of the chapter in class.
His lectures aren't mandatory to attend and he posts the notes he does on canvas. You kinda of have to mainly teach yourself everything since his lectures aren't that super helpful sometimes. He's a nice professor though!
The class was non-mandatory(try to go to the SmartLab two hours a week for credit). The SmartLab will tutor you if you struggle. Try to go to class for exam reviews(exactly like the exam) and team activities (graded days). You will be fine as long as you put effort in.
The best way to pass with an A is go to all of the smart labs and get tutored. He doesn't teach everything in class but lectures aren't mandatory. Decent teacher, not really bad. Beware of asking him questions though, he has a real attitude.
I like this professor, smartly is tedious but allowed me not to procrastinate. He drops a lot of grades and also offers extra credit. There's two attempts for the test which was great. The practice tests are so similar to the exams and the practice exams are extra credit. I would take again. You just have to put in the effort and you will do great.
Easy class if you pay attention and do well on homework and quizzes. If you do well on the first 4 tests you can skip the final and they drop 4 of your lowest homework, quiz and lecture quiz grades.
He only teaches about 1/3 of the material. Basically have to teach yourself cause his notes and explanations are not very helpful.
MAC1147 with Dr. Rothstein was the most challenging class I've taken, but I am not a math person. In the SmartLab 5+ hours a week, very tedious assignments, but there are a lot of drops at the end of the semester. His teaching style did not make sense to me and the tutors couldn't always help, so I was learning a lot on my own.
If you've had strict teachers, he is a very easy teacher to have. He records his lectures and posts his notes; attendance isn't mandatory unless there is a team activity. He's decent; the work is online for the most part.
He's okay at teaching, he says "mkay' a lot. For me, his lectures didn't really help, I had to do a lot of studying on my own. His lectures could be good for other people, though.
I would 100% take him again. He is a great professor and you can tell he cares. He was often lenient with extensions, and when asking him a question, he actually taught you instead of making you feel stupid and belittling you. I would say, if you're ready to do the work and study on your time as well, you can definitely succeed in this course.
He seems like a pretty nice guy from how much I've talked to him, and he is very clear about his expectations with the class. The only thing is that he's not great at the actual teaching part. I already took this class in high school and he confused me on topics I already knew so I just wound up not even going to class
The class itself is pretty easy, the issue is he doesn't really “teach' the subject he just shows you how to do it. Overall good teacher and chill, you will have to teach yourself 90% of the material but he is always there to help. Smart lab is also great and straightforward. YOU WILL GET AN A IN HIS CLASS IF YOU PUT IN THE WORK , ITS CAKE TRUST!!!
the workload for this class sucks but hes very flexible with due dates and drops a LOT of stuff, my dorm got flooded and i emailed him if i could have an extension and he gave me another week although his handwriting is highkey bad but he does lots of practice problems in class and is just a chill guy
mac1147 is a difficult course, it moves really quickly and builds off of previous chapters. That being said, this professors grading is very fair. He drops a decent amount of assignments and if you show up to class and get familiar with him he wants to help out. This professor cares about your success but you only get back what you put into it.
He's a great professor. Explains things pretty straight foward during his lectures. There were a handful of times where it feels like he just pulls infomation from think air but he is nice and welcoming to answering "dumb questions" so dont be afraid to just ask for help understanding.
As the semester goes on less and less people attend the lectures because it's just hard to understand what he's talking about. He pulls information out of the air sometimes. I basically learned the content of the course through the online textbook, attendance is not necessary so it felt like I was basically going to class for no reason.
Professor Rothstein is very caring, accessible outside of class, and drops a lot of assignments and quizzes. He teaches primarily through examples and it can be difficult to follow. However, if you do the homework, study, and take time to actually learn the material you will be fine. Precalc can be hard but use your resources and put in the work!
Terrible teacher, be prepared to teach urself everything bc he teaches like he expects u to know the concepts already, lectures too fast, and sometimes catches an attitude if u ask him to explain. Never went to class bc I had to teach myself everything anyways, if this is ur only choice, wait til the next semester a try again. Wish I could rate 0.
the prof himself isn't very good at teaching so I had to teach myself most of the concepts. however, the prof does also drop a ton of low grades as well as give tons of extra credit, so I cant really complain. just be sure to attend class even if you don't feel like going, there's alotta group projects that u might miss. also smartlab helps tons!!!
His instruction was very unclear during lectures and judged students who asked questions. Test weighed very heavy for the class.
